Something special is gonna happen tonight. I want you to know that. Something special is gonna happen tonight. I promise I'll be down to you. Ah. I just met you. Yeah I'm feeling. It seems that somehow we met somewhere before. I think I love you. In my dreams 100 times or maybe more. Yeah. What a connection. I just can't conceal it. There's a kind of magic in the air. Oh I can feel it. Something special is gonna happen tonight. I want you to know that. Something special is gonna happen tonight. I promise I'll be down. Special. Special. Special. Tonight. Special. Special. And the biggest kid on earth is gonna be young. Kids, what's the matter with kids today? Kids, they just get it wrong with everything they say. Those say we're disobedient, disrespectful ones. Noisy, crazy, softly lazy, no fun. And while you're on the subject, kids, you can talk till you're blue in the face. Kids, but it's everything they do, it's just a disgrace. Why can't they be like I was, perfect in every way? What's the matter with kids today? I can do that. One, two, three, four. And while you're on the subject, kids, they're just impossible to control. Kids, with their way of posing, they're rock and roll. Well, why can't they be like I was, perfect in every way? What's the matter with kids today? Hey! Something special is gonna happen tonight. Special, special, special tonight. Fantastic. Thank you very much. Well, hello Australia, and welcome to our 17th birthday. I don't think there's any of the Young Talent team here that were on our very first Young Talent time, although we're even alive on our very first Young Talent time, on the 24th of April, 1971. But we've got a lot of our friends in the studio audience tonight. We've got some wonderful memories for you. And would you join me? Remember this lady, she was on our very first Young Talent time, the delightful Evie Hayes. Where are you, Evie? Beautiful. And just a second, I've gotta do it. Evie, when you're ready, Evie, I loves ya. And I loves ya back. That's beautiful. We've got a whole bunch of our Young Talent time kids from over the years that are with us. Of course, a lot of them are overseas and doing things. We'll be finding out all about that. And it's a celebration night, so thanks for joining us, Australia. Have a good time with us, OK? Hey! Isn't it cute? It's a real dummy, too. That's the real dummy, this isn't the real dummy. These two people are very, very dear to my heart because they take me back to 1971. Of course, you all know Greg Mills, who you saw in that montage in the last segment. Thank you, that was wonderful. Apart from Greg and myself, we are the two guys who have been involved with Young Talent time since 1971. The two left. Since 1971. It's just the two of us, mate. two of us. You still look young enough to be in the team. I know it's the palm of my lips mate. Excuse me but but this is oh of course Maggie Burns as well but Maggie left for a couple of years to have babies you never left. I can't have babies. I'm glad to hear that Greg. This is Helen Jowsey and Helen give her a big welcome because she's very special to us. And you may wonder why do I have this lady on the program because she doesn't look like an ex-Young Talent Time member but Helen Helen played in our Young Talent Time Orchestra back in the very first episode of Young Talent Time. That's right. And I introduced Helen to the audiences of Australia and I forgot her name. Have a look at this. This was April 1971 with Helen at the piano. Our first episode. Before we pick the song I'd like to introduce you to a lady who'll be playing the piano for us in our sing-along segment and one of the most talented people in Melbourne. There she is, our lovely lady. Helen. Smile, you're on camera. Helen has been so nervous she loves playing piano but as soon as she gets on the camera she goes, I'm on camera. Don't be nervous, don't get the wrong idea. And the reason why I've been doing this show for 17 years is because I keep practicing until I get it right. Helen it's lovely to see you again and this number is especially for you from our current Young Talent Team kids because it's girls just want to have fun. Say thank you to Helen and I'm the Young Talent Team. We want to have fun. Girls just want to have fun. Always in the middle of his night mind for the years. What you're gonna do with your life. All Saturdays you know you're still number one. The best they want to have fun. Oh girls just want to have a totally new life. So fun. When the working day is done. Oh girls they want to have fun. Oh girls just want to have fun. Sometimes it takes a beautiful girl and hides her away from the rest of the world. I want to be the one who walks in the sun. Oh girls they want to have fun. Oh girls just want to have a totally new life. So fun. When the working day is done. Oh girls they want to have fun. Oh girls just want to have fun. Oh girls just want to have fun. Hi guys. It's great to see the girls having fun isn't it? I have a question for you. Do you and your girlfriend ever go out and have fun? Oh yeah I take her to the top of the gum tree for a cuddle. She's really shy. Really? Yeah she'll never let me give her a kiss until gum leaves. You must wait a long time then. Seriously though she loves to dance. Side a way we dance every week. Yeah my girlfriend Shirley. Shirley? Yeah Shirley she's invented a new dance it's called the talk. The talk? How do you do the talk Clance? Yeah well you don't move anything but your lips. Yes yes she wanted to be a hula dancer too. A hula dancer? Yeah but it's a real shaky business. I talked her out of it. How do you get camera girls? I don't have a party. I feel it in my leg. I feel it in my shoe. Tell me pretty baby if you think you feel it too. Let's have a party. Let's have a party. I'm gonna send you to the store and let's buy some more and let's have a party tonight. Some people like to ride. Some people like to roll. Moving and a groove I'm gonna satisfy my soul. Let's have a party. Let's have a party. I'm gonna send you to the store and let's buy some more and let's have a party tonight. We always know when it's time to go and we split. You never stay when it looks that way. So you split. When it's time to split, Pauls gives you a tangy eye shell around a smooth vanilla center like original Redskin Split. Passion fruit, pine orange and new lemon lime. We always know when it's time to go and we split. Right now's a great time to split. Highland Sunland number one. Queensland's tough timber team. Friendly service every time with all your timber knees. Who's the top timber team? Highland Sunland's who we mean. Yes sir, for all your general timber needs, fencing, treated logs and so much more. Call into Highland Sunland. That's who we mean. Queensland's top timber team is Highland Sunland number one. This is one of my very favorite photographs. It was the first publicity photo we ever had taken and that was the original Young Talent team going from that side. That's Philip Gould, Vicki Broughton, Jamie Redfern, Jane Scali, yours truly and then Rod Kirkham and of course Debbie Byrne right there on the left. And a very very old-fashioned camera which has gone out of out of fashion now. And of course we've all seen many times the very first song that we did which was Up Up and Away. But something that I haven't shared ever in the 17 years of Young Talent Time apart from when it happened was the moment when we said goodbye to Debbie. Because of course Debbie Byrne when she was with Young Talent Time was the queen of pop. She won two Logies as best teenage performer and had a big hit record with He's a Rebel. And of course her last appearance was a very very sad one for all of us especially myself because she was just such a wonderful team member. And I'd like to recapture that moment with you. This was Debbie Byrne's farewell. And we're quite sure that everybody's going to enjoy her very last song on Young Talent Time. I Don't Know How to Love Him, our very own Debbie Byrne. I don't know how to love him, what to do, how to move him. I've been changed, yes really changed. In these past few days when I've seen myself I seem lost on the map. Beautiful voice then and still now. Of course after leaving Young Talent Time Debbie had enormous success in many many fields. She was with John Farnham in the Farnham and Byrne series of specials on the ABC. She won many many gold records for hit records and of course started in an international movie with Matt Dillon called Rebel. And then her big big role in Cats which was just such a beautiful performance. And currently she's starring in Les Miserables which I think is one of the most beautiful musical plays I've ever seen. This is Debbie in Les Miserables. And we will live the years together. But that dream that cannot be. And now we're going. She's come a long way from this very very first publicity picture here in our very own Network 10 studio, Miss Debbie Byrne. And we're very thrilled to have her with us here tonight to perform for you once again on Young Talent Time. The wonderful talent of Miss Debbie Byrne. Tell him that you're never gonna leave him. Tell him that you're always gonna love him. Tell him, tell him, tell him, tell him right now. I know something about love. You gotta show him that. Make him see the moon above. Go out and get him. If you wanted to. Make your heart beat out. If you wanted to. To only think of you. Just tell him that you're never gonna leave him. Tell him that you're always gonna love him. Tell him, tell him, tell him, tell him right now. Ever since the world began. It's been that way for men and women. Were created. Think that love, that destiny. What should you love me? So complicated. Oh yeah. I know something about love. You gotta take it and show him what the world's made of. The kiss will move him. If you wanted to be. Always fly on high. Take his hand to try. To swallow that foolish lie. Tell him that you're never gonna leave him. Tell him that you're always gonna love him. Tell him, tell him, tell him, tell him right now. Oh you gotta tell him. You gotta tell him. Tell him, tell him, tell him, tell him right now. Yeah! Happy birthday, dear Julie. Happy birthday John. Here you go. You can have one of these too. Thank you for joining us for our 17th birthday show. Can you believe it's 17 years since we started on our first show? I find it very difficult to believe. Someone actually asked me in the dressing room, I think it was Courtney, were you on Young Talent Time? It's the first time anyone's ever said that to me. It's wonderful. I'm going to show everybody. These are my children. Yes I know I wanted to do that before. These are my beautiful children. This is Aja, my first, and Lauren, my second. And Lauren, dance. You've been in some of their dancing before during rehearsals, don't you Lauren? You wanna dance just a little bit? Come on. I know something about love. Go on dance. You've got it. I'm going to do it on cue Lauren. Oh no. Come and give me a cuddle. Listen, let me show you something Lauren and Aja. This is a very, very precious piece of footage because this was the closing of our very first episode of Young Talent Time in 1971 when we were all sitting around the piano. Do you remember that? Yes. We didn't know what we'd done. It was our very first Young Talent Time and this was the end of it and we were all so relieved. And you'll notice a very young 13 or 14 year old. 13. 13 year old Debbie Byrne. Have a look at this footage. This is 1971. Whoa. I've got my eye on you. You look cool. Look at that. And jump in. Wow. You will have noticed that the reason why Debbie turned her head to the side because she couldn't remember the words. I remember that. And I made a little mistake in another number that you used to repeat all the time. So I'm really glad you got some new footage. We got the new footage. Actually we found a brand new version of our first episode and really thrilled to see it too. Debbie you're doing wonderfully well in Les Miserables. I'm glad you said that. And it's a great play and certainly everybody that I've met that have seen your performance love it. Continued success. We love you still at Young Talent Time and your whole little family. And how about a special thank you to Miss Debbie Byrne everybody. The girls on the beach know. Boys down the street know. The chicks at the Flick's know. The guys at the cafe know. And with extra strength Clearasil you can fight even the most stubborn pimples. The guys on the bikes know. The girls at the lights know. Everybody's in the know. About what helps the pimples grow. Clearasil. The Queen will be there and so will the Young Talent Team and all the gang from Network 10 will be there celebrating the opening. So we hope we see you all there and that will be exciting won't it? It sure will. I'd also like to mention some of the Young Talent Team, ex Young Talent Team members that are not here with us tonight for our birthday show and we've got some telegrams. First of all from Jane Scarley who's performing in Europe and we got a phone call from her in Greece this morning. Lots of love to you Janey. Philip Gould is in London. Sally Boyden is in London. Joey Perrone is in America and Karen Noll's just got married in Italy. And of course in our studio audience tonight we've got handsome people. Greg Mills over there looking great. Timmy Nelson next to him. And giggling goody behind him that's Katie Van Rea. And then moving, I won't go through all of them right now but then moving right along sitting next to the beautiful Evie Hayes is Jamie Redfern and his gorgeous wife just to the right. And who's sitting behind the monitor that I can't see? We'll get to that in a minute. But first of all let's take a little look back over 17 wonderful years of Young Talent Time and some footage that you may not have seen going right back to April 1971 with the very first episode of Young Talent Time and then we'll track through the 17 years. This is recorded on the 23rd of the 4th 71 to replay 24th of the 4th 71 take one. The world. Everybody should come. And we're happy to sing. For you. For you. For you. For you. For you. For you.
