216 children and adopted a further nine most disabled or otherwise disadvantaged
At present they have 11 children in their permanent care and because of recent knee surgery
Chris's mum could no longer lift or maneuver him
They clearly needed help and asked variety to provide a special hoist
The hydraulic lifter we purchased has made a world of difference
And highlights the importance we place on providing the right solutions for deserving people
Of course, these are just a tiny proportion of the grants approved
There are much bigger ones such as the commitment by variety club of one million dollars over the next five years
To sponsor the isolation ward at a new children's hospital being built in western sydney
This ward will also care for future babies born with aids as a result of their mother's infection
What impresses me is that each grant is personally assessed on its individual merit
Contacts always made by a variety club committee member and if necessary a visit to more accurately assess the need
Because we really believe we should work at least as hard at spending as we do in raising money
Our sunshine coach program reached another milestone
50 new coaches in one year for the first time
Frontline work with children through ladies of variety and young variety continues to be legendary
Children have been given holidays around australia
Harbour cruises horse riding adventures visits to the zoo and trips to theme parks to make their dreams come true
We've had dinners luncheons cabarets and dances
There's been mcappie day where one dollar from each big mac sold nationally was donated to variety
There've been a whole host of ways members of 1056 have contributed to the continuing drive to help needy children
All this has been possible
only because variety club is so well supported by the business community sports personalities show business
and the general public
It's hard to pick a highlight for the year
But if I had to it would probably be our annual christmas parties possibly the biggest in the southern hemisphere
Ladies of variety organize hundreds of volunteers presents and tasty treats
For thousands of kids and a visit by one very important gentleman

Australia is a very large country and yet our help reaches into the farthest corners of each state
