yards behind so at the end of this lap I wouldn't be too surprised to see Mick right up there with him. We must apologize for the quality of the picture tonight. Obviously some satellite break up there coming out of Spain. You can see a picture break up but it's as good as we can tweak it so we've got to live with it tonight. And hopefully we're going to enjoy a very very good race. You can see a massive crowd here. Yeah there's no Alexander Barros tonight on the Kajiva or Ceto Pons. He crashed in practice and hurt himself a bit. I don't actually know what he's done but that's probably put him out psychologically for the rest of the year. Because he really wasn't too much on the ball. Rain is getting away a little bit now. Mick really made a rush at him. It closed up but as you say Rainy just getting away a little bit. I guess as that front tyre warms up he'll be a bit more confident. He's changed so many combinations Barry over the three days. Obviously setting for this one. But Doolman is there. Kaczynski is still there. Lawson is also there. And this man Swantz. We're expecting bigger things from him. The Suzuki a far better bike to ride he claims now. Yeah they've changed the suspension quite. Look at Rainy going at it. I reckon Mick might have had a bit of a sideways somewhere. Got his steps out on a bit of a cold tyre. And he's just sort of cooling it down a little bit to heat his tyres up. But you can't hold to that Rainy. Get off like that. Look at the lead he's got already. That's what. Second or so. He's an amazing rider isn't he? He comes out and states what he's going to do. I'm just going to get off the line and go as hard as I can. Looking from Variga's point of view of this race. And nobody seems to have an answer to that. No. He's just very very good. There's no two ways about that. Nobody seems to be able to get all the first six. There's five of them on Dunlop tyres. So they've got a heap of chance to Rainy. It's very very hard on tyres this place. Especially the front end. After about 20 laps. 18-20 laps. You keep your eyes on the front end of people's bikes. You remember that Swantz was leading the race here with a lap or so. Oh back in the rain with a lap or so to go and lost the front end. So very very hard on front tyres. They're also saying the rider's complaining about a lot of bumps in the very fast sweeping corners. And you can take a racing line and all of a sudden you get bumped. You know a foot off that line. It's pretty frightening stuff. Yeah not only that you see. When you're coming out of a fast corner you're getting the power down. And you're just feeling for the bike braking traction. Sort of seat in the pants stuff. And then you hit a bump and it completely breaks traction. So that's where. Look at the back end of Rainy's bike coming off the ground on the braking. You see now Rainy this year is... Oh great. He's really on the pedal harder this year than he ever has been. Yeah so consistent. So smooth. We keep saying it. But he can really throw a bike around. I mean the bike can move around all it likes with this fellow. And he just sits there and just controls it. But Mick Doohan putting in another fantastic ride. Holding out Kaczynski and Lawson at the moment. Yeah Mick's... This is really his chance to get up there with Rainy. Because Rainy's leading by what four or five points. So really for Mick tonight a win would be just what the doctor ordered. Rainy's machine really moving around. Perhaps everybody else's is doing the same. We're only getting a close look at Rainy's bike at the moment. But you can see it. It's really getting the wobbles in and out of this very bumpy very fast circuit. Yeah it's really... Rainy's really really trying hard. You watch Rainy's bike goes you at home when he comes into the slow corner. Especially past the start and finish. You watch the back wheel. You see the back wheel three or four inches off the ground. All that is just breaking as hard as he can. And all the weight transfers onto the front. And he's just lifting the back end off the ground. Barry I've had a lot of letters throughout the week. And they're asking me the question. When do the riders start to use the pads and the knees? And when do they start getting so low where they're actually balancing off their knees? It was started really by a guy called John Cooper and Paul Smart. When we first had the 750's with sort of 130 horsepower in there. The tyres were just so bad that you couldn't crank the bike over. So what you'd do, you'd hang off the... Look at the back end of Rainy's bike. You'd hang right off the edge of the bike to keep the bike up as straight as you could. And consequently your knees would drag on the ground. It rubbed through your leathers and scratched through your knees. So then we started putting leather pads and I started putting motocross pads on my knees. Because I used to hit my knees on the curbs. Mick John from Queensland, Australia doing the best he can to chase Wayne Rainy out of California. So it's Yamaha and Honda at the moment. Kaczynski in behind doing just out of picture at the moment. You'll see him in a second flashing through there. So the gap's pretty even between one, two and three. Yeah it does look as if Mick's pulled back a little bit there. The Honda really won't have chance at this circuit to come into it. You see there it definitely looks close. Come into it's own because the Honda's the top speed bike of the lot. And oh yes, definitely pulling him in. There aren't many straights in here. There's an awful lot of corners though. So it's really hard work circuit. The temperature there today is only about 26 so it's not too bad. I love Kaczynski's confidence again. They said you're going so terribly quickly. He said I'm just out there riding, having a good time. Oh yeah, I mean he's very, very good. You know tonight I didn't say that Kaczynski was going. I reckon Kaczynski's tonight. But no, it's definitely going to be either one of these two. I'll put my money on Mick tonight. Well Mick seems to be able to really mean enough. He looks pretty comfortable on the bike. It doesn't seem to be dancing around as much as the Yamaha. But then again we haven't seen as much of him close up. No, it looks really sort of sanitary the way it's steering. It doesn't look to be leaping from one side of the road to the other. It certainly isn't wobbling and wriggling as much as Raney's bike. You see there Mick's definitely putting Raney in. I don't know about that. The Australian running in the second spot at the moment chasing this man, Wayne Raney on the Robert's Yamaha. I'll lay money on the fact that Mick had a bit of a back end or front end lose right at the beginning when he was trying to go as hard as he could. He had a bit of a slide and just thought, well I've got to get my tyres really hot. Looking down at the third place man, that's John Kaczynski. The sensation out of America. Everybody tipping that he will win a world championship. No doubt about that. Class written all over him. He's a very, very good rider. A very confident rider. If those of you are lucky to see him in action at Eastern Creek. And of course he won this race last year on a 250cc machine. I suppose the only night I haven't said that he's going to watch Kaczynski, he'll go wind tonight. Duhan definitely closing in on Raney now. Visually you can see the chase. And if anything Kaczynski might have made just a fraction on McDon as well. You know what a graveyard really is? Author of The Oscoberting Misery. A place where the dead speak. And now his all time best selling tale of horror comes to television for the first time. What did we do tonight John? Pet Cemetery. What we did was a secret. Don't go out. Stay at home. Has anyone ever buried a person up there? But lock your doors. Dad is going to do something really bad. 8.30 Monday on 9. Stephen King's Pet Cemetery. Gillette presents another great moment in 9's wide world of sports. The biggest man in Australian sports. Port Lincoln tuna fisherman Dean Luken produced his biggest haul 21 Commonwealth gold in Brisbane in 1982. He drives it up now. He's held it. He's held it. A 2.21. That's a good record for a 2.21. He goes up on a big fellow, Dean Luken. And the crowd go up with him. Taking the gold for Australia and all the records with him. Gillette. The best a man can get. You're looking sharp. You're looking good. You've come so far. And we know how to measure. The most of who you are. Father to son. It's what we've always done. Gillette. Gillette Contour Plus and Gillette Foniche Cream. Together the best a man can get. Two years ago the motoring world said it would be impossible. After dropping out of motor racing for three decades, the new Mercedes-Benz team was given no chance of victory in its first four year battle tracks. But the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows not only won the toughest race of all, the Le Mans 24 hour. They also swept to victory in the World Sports Car Championship for 1989. And then repeated defeat in 1990. But perhaps most surprising of all, the advanced technology of the Silver Arrows is based on today's generation of Mercedes-Benz road cars. Evening Chief. Did you know Citibank's cash management account pays you 15% per annum? 15% for the first 30 days. Plus a checkbook and Citibank card access. That's smart. That's Citibank. Tuesday on 9. This is an octopus. This is a slimy fish with no spines. Should be an agent. A great list of people are after it all together now, followed by Australia's funniest home videos. This is the Spanish Grand Prix coming out of the Jerez Circuit. You're looking at Michael Dewan from Australia out in front doing a great job at the moment leading Wayne Rainey. Barry will have a look at that passing move in just a moment. You can take us through it because it's a beautiful piece of riding from Dewan. It's sensational. It goes back to the old favorite corner on the circuit. As I was saying earlier on, Mick was really good on the left hander into the start and finish straight. And he just set Rainey up perfectly for that. Really got a good run into it. Nice run out. Back live Dewan from Australia in front. Rainey is second. Kaczynski is third. They're a big break on the rest of the field at the moment. But Mick Dewan building a small gap now. He's getting a little buffer on Rainey. And Barry, you thought that Rainey might have dropped back and just got his head together again. But Kaczynski now is going to trouble him to fight for second spot. Yeah, it's going to be really intriguing. I know there's no team orders. So we're going to have to wait and see because obviously Rainey doesn't. Gareega, Ruggiero and Lawson have been dinged on there. Yeah, obviously Rainey doesn't want to lose any have any points taken away from him by his teammates. So we just have to wait and see. That's Lawson in front of Gareega there. And that is the that is the operation of the Roberts team that they can go and race. Well, yeah, I spoke to Kaczynski. I asked him about that specifically and he said, no, there's no team orders. But it's going to be really interesting at the end of this race. Say, for example, if Kaczynski does beat Rainey, then we're going to have to wait and see what they're going to do about it because at this stage of the game, I know they don't know. Great shots there, Gareega chasing Eddie Lawson. That's the new color scheme. Yeah, it's still Ducard responses. It must be the new color of their pack. Lawson, Ruggiero and Gareega there. Are you surprised that the top three have made such a break on the rest of the field at this stage? Well, I'm surprised they got away from Schwantz. I really expected Kevin Schwantz to be up there with them. OK, when they got a bit of a break, it looks as if Kevin was going to be able to stay with them. And then they just dropped him off. So I guess they with the Suzuki lot, they still haven't got their suspension problems sorted out. So by the lead mix got now, we're going to know in the next two laps with Rainey, because if he leaves any longer than that, then there's not going to be a snowball in Elstur. So Kaczynski, they're still chasing Wayne Rainey. Teammates both riding Yamahas, both riding for the Kenny Roberts team. And as Barry Shearer said, they're allowed to race. But if anything, either Rainey's turned off up the wick or Kaczynski's turned his down a little. I reckon this is it from Rainey now. He knows that if he lets Mick get away any further than that, in these two laps, if he's closer by half the distance to Mick, then he's in with a really good chance. But you can see now he's really trying very, very hard. As much as Rainey is trying hard, it's an awful spot for Mick too, because he would know that Rainey's going to make a charge. So he's really got to concentrate. Oh yeah, and all Mick's been doing is trying to get as much ground out on Rainey. But that's where the old psychological bit comes into it. You know, what you have to do now is he'll know at the end of this lap that Rainey's pulled in a little bit of ground on him. So then it's up to Mick to really go hard at him for two or three laps. And then Rainey will think, forget it. Where do you dig deep from to get that? I mean, you've had to do it. Where does it come from? It's just the fact that if you're getting physically tired or whatever, you think, well, OK, my wrists are aching a bit, my back's aching, I'm feeling a bit out of puff. And you know, if you're feeling like that, the other guys are feeling just the same. And then you just have some inner strength. Don't ask me where it's hidden, you know, but some inner strength, and you just have to do it. Race tough. Yeah, you know, so many races are won on the old psychological front. Well, make doing doing this proud, but coming into some traffic, too, and this could come into play. Yeah, it could really do make up. He's mixed. Got past that guy there. Really perfect place. All right, as now coming up on the left of the field. And we've seen this happen so many times before, but once they get into the traffic, some riders can just work the traffic a lot better than others. Raney's always to me very confident in traffic. We haven't seen Mick have to fight his way through from the lead before. So it'll be interesting to see how he handles it. Well, luckily enough, there's not that many back markers. That's Becker from Germany, not Boris hands back. We haven't seen him before in the five hundred and most of the majority of the guy that, you know, if he's not a regular GP contender, he's got his head screwed on because he looked behind. After Mick had come past, he knew the other guys would be up pretty soon and he was on the lookout. So four points to him. Kaczynski may be closing a little bit again on Wayne Raney in some parts of the circuit, but Raney seems to dust him off in other parts. He gets close there on the other side of the circuit. Seems to me that Raney can pull a bit on him. Yeah, it's the old story does you know, you always end up in a little section of the course that you like and you're quicker than the other guy. And there's always a section of the course where as hard as you try, you don't seem to be quick through it or you don't feel confident through it. Mick's holding stations, so I reckon that now what we want now is for Kaczynski to get past Raney, which looks pretty possible. Then that will be absolutely perfect because Raney will get really miffed then if Kaczynski starts sort of, well he won't be holding him up, but when you're racing with somebody, it actually slows you down a bit. And then that will be just what they've got to order for me. So Kaczynski and Raney battling it out for second place. There's the gap from one, two and three. So Mick Dewan with a pretty handy lead at the moment under these conditions because they've been so close right throughout the race. Mick Dewan had to do all the chasing early. Now he's got in front, he's the head, they're chasing him now. Yeah, it's good. You know, it's looking at Mick's bike. It doesn't look like there's too many 15 laps to the finish. It doesn't look as if there's many problems on the back end of the bike, but the front end is the problem around here and you'd never see any problem on the front end until it's too, oh yes, Kaczynski. He would have been well pleased if he'd have stuck out the inside there. You know, Raney races hard doesn't he? He just holds his line and says, you know, you can get around me, but you'll do it the tough way. I mean, gee whiz, he's a hard competitor. Yeah, I can imagine Kaczynski was pretty annoyed with himself after the race at Laguna Seca because he had a sure third place and threw it away. And at the end of the day or at the end of the year, you know, you kick himself. Well, that was Mick's strength right through last season. He just stayed in there in contention. He was very consistent. Maybe this kid's got to learn to do the same. Exactly. You know, Kaczynski now is going through the same, yes, yes, he's got him. That's the same place as Mick got past Raney. You see, Kaczynski is going through the same learning process as Mick. And it's something you have to do. There's no substitute for experience. Now it's going to be really interesting. Now you watch Raney, the little shock as he just, whoa, he suddenly realized. Because when you're looking for the apex of the corner and you're not paying attention to somebody nipping up the inside, you're seeing where you're going to run out. You know, if you've got enough room to run out the corner. It does take you up itself by surprise. Well, you've just been to Milan. You've been over with the Kajiba factory while we're looking at Eddie Lawson here on the Kajiba. What can you report from the trip? Well, they've got a lot of new technology. They're working on a fuel injection system and I watched the engines on the dyno. You know, sensational setup they've got over there. And for people that are interested in Ducati, which is one of the factories that Kajiba own, I saw all the drawings of the new four cylinder. It's going to be a Kajiba actually, not a Ducati, but it's sort of out of the Ducati. So he's saved his Schwantz out of the race. The Schwantz is out. We'll take a break. Be back shortly. Gillette presents another great moment in Nines wide world of sports. For Tracy Wickham, the Chandler Bull in Brisbane would provide the fairytale backdrop for her retirement from international swimming at the 1982 Commonwealth Games. In front of her hometown crowd, the world record holder powered to victory in the 400 meters freestyle. What a champion she is. She's touching for another gold medal for Australia. The queen of the pool, honored by her queen in a great finale. Gillette, the best a man can get. Gillette Contour Plus and Gillette Foamy Shave Cream. Together, the best a man can get. Evening, Chief. Need something? Higher interest for my money. That's all. Citibank's cash management account pays you 15% per annum. 15%? Not the first 30 days. Then really competitive interest, a checkbook and Citibank card access at over 2000 ATMs. A cash management account that pays 15% for the first 30 days. That's smart. That's Citibank. The GMH factory run out always represents genuine savings, especially now, because during the run out of all our hold and notice and follows, we're getting a factory cash back of $1,500 on every card. At North America's oldest registered distillery, Jack Daniel's in Tennessee, they use spring water from deep underground to make Jack Daniel's whiskey. And they smooth every drop of their whiskey through huge mellowing vats, something no other distiller still does. At Jack Daniel's, they've insisted on spring water and extra mellowing since 1866. After a sip of their whiskey, you'll be glad they always will. Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey. Welcome back to the Spanish 500 CC Grand Prix after 18 laps. It's Doohan, Kosinski, Rainey, Gueriga, Lawson, Ruggier. You're looking at shots from Gueriga's bike there. Now, you are seeing the man in his new colors throwing the bike around. But Michael Doohan doing such a fantastic job out in front, Barry. Yeah, Gueriga has stormed past Lawson. He's putting away from Lawson hand over fist. I don't know whether he's got any kind of problems. Listen to the crowd then. Yeah, I think Lawson has a bit of trouble because I saw him looking out here and now Jean-Felipe Ruggier is in front of him. So that's when you think about it, how many times did we see the Kajiba break down and it's been very reliable up until now. You see, this is what happens when when you're stretching something. Just imagine it as a bow spring. They're stretching it to the limit to get decent power out of the Kajiba. And to get that good power, you have to sort of sacrifice some reliability. So the crowd, the hometown hero doing a pretty good job. And you can see Eddie Lawson dropping back now. Wayne Rainey has got ahead of John Kosinski again. So this has been an intense battle for second and third. Yeah, but Rainey thinks, well, I really don't need this. Well, I think his heart would have dropped a little because we've now got Mick Doohan well over five seconds out in front. While these two have been hard at it, he's been just building that lead ever so slightly and stretching it out of five seconds. And that's a role where normally we see Rainey do. Yeah. And the great thing, as far as Mick is concerned, the next race is German Grand Prix Hockenheim. And Hockenheim has got Honda written all over it because the straights are very, very long there. And if there's one thing they can can do is get horsepower. So the Roberts team at the moment with 20 laps gone. I've got to be content with second and third at the moment. Kevin Swantz we saw sitting on the pit wall. We're not quite sure what happened there. Yeah, that's in fact the next race is the Italian Grand Prix, I beg your pardon. After that is Hockenheim. And the Hondas in Italy? Not not very good around Mizano because it's a bit of a Mickey Mouse little go kart track, really. And why on earth they run a Grand Prix there, I should never know. Would that suit the Kajiba perhaps? Oh, yeah, it's a Kajiba. It's a Yamaha. Yamaha and Kajiba really very much. So Wayne Rainey not used to being in second spot, being passed in that position in that part of the circuit twice. Once by McDoone, once by John Kosinski. He's called back past Kosinski. Nine laps to go now and look at the lead, Mick Scott. So we'll keep our fingers crossed and he should be all right. Bike number 11 you saw was Pappa. With Mick Doone on bike three, he's the one that we're looking at the moment out in front in fine style. Over five seconds, the lead he stretched out. We're just amazed at the transformation of this team now. I mean, they're looking so good, so confident. Yeah, it's good. Jeremy Burgess and Mick get on really good. They've got a nice little team, you know, because they're all good buddies and that. And it makes so, so much difference to be happy with the people you're working with. Not that Wayne isn't happy with the people he's working with, but you just get on to you'll find that Mick now go from strength to strength after hopefully winning this. I won't do. After hopefully winning this, his confidence will be really, really good. Up the inside. Yeah, perfect. See, he's not getting held up by traffic. He's just striking at the right place. Pappa's pretty good in traffic, though. Oh, he is experienced riders. See, that's you can't go wrong. You know, you can't moan at the blokes because their bikes are 40 mile an hour slower than the factory Honda's or Yamaha. At least you can't moan if they get out of the way sensibly. Mick doing a veritable rocket tonight. He really had to do the chasing early, but that's a role he's become accustomed to. And I think he seems to be a little happier sitting in and pushing as they have to seven seconds. It's saying happy to push a little. And then once he gets in front, he seems to relax a lot more and just build. Yeah, that's this is all the stuff that you see the back end plunging on doing by. That's not not really anything to worry about. Just getting grip and as it gets grip, it winds the suspension up. So it just squashes the suspension if you like. And then when you back off the throttle to change gear, the suspension comes up again. So you see plunging at the back end. That's a bit of a characteristic for the Honda. But Barry, this is an amazing performance because he was behind by two or three seconds. He's now stretched out to seven in front. So he's had to make up ten seconds all over. Oh, yeah. You see, this is what I was saying about experience. You know, he was drawing on his experience, had a good go at the beginning and I reckon he must have got a sideways somewhere. I thought, no, no, no, the tires aren't hot. I don't want to go and throw it at the store buyers. Settled down, got everything to his liking and turned the old wick up and it's not doing bad, is it? These two have been hard at it the entire race. I wonder how Rainey feels about that. I mean, he knows he's got to race the rest of the field, but to race his teammate as hard as he's got to do these days. Well, I guess the nice thing about it is it makes the race seem like a five lap or instead of twenty nine laps. It's interesting. Mick was saying twenty nine laps around this circuit is total concentration. So you mentally drain when you get off the bike. Now, I know that's mostly the case anyway, but this track in particular, he said you're just exhausted. Well, yeah, there's not really any place for a rest. You know, there's not a couple of good straights. There's one and even that is not a very long straight. And you're coming onto it out of a really sort of nice long straight lead. You're coming out of that corner is a second gear corner and you're getting on the power really hard. But the time it stops shaking its head, it's you're halfway down the straight and then no sooner than you're halfway down the straight. You're getting on the brakes to get around the right hander. So there's very, very little time to rest. Seven laps remaining, twenty three of twenty nine ticking by now. Mick Jones just holding it together, building and building on that lead. These two still racing for second and third. Kavinsky seems to have dropped a little now and sitting in behind Raney, but maybe he's just having a breather for another lunch. So there we go as we wind down in the Spanish Grand Prix. Stay with us. A lot more accident to come and an Australian definitely on the podium. Gillette presents another great moment in nine wide world of sports. The Louis 2 Stadium Christchurch 1974 and athletics fans were treated to one of the great fifteen hundred meter races in history. Local boy John Walker and Tanzania's Bilbao Bay set a sizzling pace. They had to produce a world record to beat Walker, who also shattered the old mark. They first, Walker second and Ben Jipko third in one of the historic races in Commonwealth Games history. Gillette, the best a man can get. You're looking sharp, you're looking good, you've come so far. And we know how to make the most of who you are. Father to son is what we've always done. Gillette, come to a plus and Gillette, Tony Shave Creek. Together, the best a man can get. Driving a Formula One car when it's right is the most amazing boat you will ever imagine. The first thing you need is to be quick. Today I sat next to Sterling Moss and then all of a sudden I go to another place and I sit down and Ben Jipko is sitting next to me. The Australian Grand Prix is without doubt the best Grand Prix of the year. Simply the best. Bloody great. I mean you are playing with your life sometimes. I think it's definitely the ultimate. I knew that at that stage nobody else could improve and had on the radio the message that Frost had just done his second set of tires. The best idea really is to have all 16 races here. You've chosen the right place. How much would you expect to pay for a modern Electrolux with a 1000 watt motor and power boost control? Godfrey's price will amaze you, but first let's test it. Plus you get 12 months factory guarantee. See Godfrey's for Electrolux at Fortitude Valley, Strathpine, Kapalibar, Southport and Mermaid Beach Gold Coast. Spanish 500cc Grand Prix, 24 laps gone. He's still there. Michael Doon out in front from Rene Kaczynski, Garriga, Rouget and now Eddie Lawson in sixth spot. Well Wayne Gardner was battling around in eighth spot and it's very sad for us. But he's now into seventh spot so he's made up a spot there. But it's so unusual to see Gardner so far back. Yeah, in actual fact he's 45 seconds behind Mick. So it's quite a long way and Wayne was saying he was looking forward to getting into Europe. Psychologically he's not right, he's not in tune with it at the moment. When it gets like that what happens is you try even harder and you go even slower. The best thing to do is go out and get drunk and say oh who cares. And then you get to the circuit the next morning and you're like I should have done that last night. Four laps to the finish and then you think, I'm not saying going out and getting drunk is a good thing anyway. But to relax, what I'm trying to say is to relax. And then as you relax things come a lot easier. So what you're saying is Wayne Gardner really has mentally turned himself off to some degree. Yeah, you know things just haven't clicked into place, haven't gone right for him. And you end up having a psychological back with yourself and it's pretty bad. Because you go to bed at night and you think I can't believe I'm trying so hard. And it's still not going right, not going quick. And then you'll be out in qualifying and your teammate will come flying past you. You feel like a milk herd, it's just hopeless. And you think what do I do, what do I do? You start to get in a stage of panic. And then the moment you say oh so what and settle down, then it all clicks back into place again. Wayne Reiny, John Kaczynski, second and third, a long way behind Australia's McDoone. And if he could just hold it together now for another three laps he's certainly going to win this race. And it's been an interesting circuit this Grand Prix at Hares for Australia. Because Gardner won it in 1990, McGee won it in 88, Gardner won it in 87 and 86. So the Australians have got a fair record here. Yeah it just seems Spain does seem to be a lucky place for the Aussies. It looks as if Kaczynski is sizing up Reiny again. And if Kaczynski does Reiny that will be where you see that corner coming into that corner would be the place on the last lap that he'd nail him. That was where Kaczynski nipped up the inside of Catalora last year on the 250. And Catalora a very experienced rider and took everybody by complete shock. You know so I know that Kaczynski's good into that left hander onto the start and finish. So if he doesn't get past him before then keep your eyes on the last corner last lap. I'm just wondering though because of the situation of Duhun being so dominant tonight, whether there hasn't been a sign go out to Kaczynski just to ease back and allow Reiny in second. Maybe they've stopped racing this time around. I don't know. You know it's something that I'll have to find out about during the week. I can't imagine it because when I was talking to Kaczynski at the Australian Grand Prix, I asked him about the team order situation. That's Marillus on the Sonorito Yamai. I asked him about the situation. He said well there's no team orders. But at that stage of the game it didn't look as if Kaczynski was going to give Reiny this amount of aggro. Look at the difference now from Duhun to Reiny, 10 seconds. I mean that's just amazing. You see what's happened now. Reiny's going as slow as he can. Just to hang on to, oh yes, Reiny ran really wide there coming out of that corner and lost all his momentum and that's why Kaczynski got past. But I don't think you've seen the last of Reiny here. Maybe that just answered that question. Yeah, because the door was wide open. You see on the left there, you see Reiny lost all his run out of there. And now his bike is just about getting back on the power again and they're into the next corner. So two laps to the finish. So really a race of sensations tonight because Reiny did what he normally does. He just ran away and hit at the start and Duhun was doing the chase. Kaczynski was back in the third spot. Duhun then took over from Reiny after attempting to do it once in very spectacular fashion. That's Gorigi you're looking at there. And then once he got in front he started to really build and now stretched out to 10 seconds. But Reiny and Kaczynski's certainly been fighting it out for second and third since Duhun has taken the lead. And I'd say by that gap there, there's no team orders and Kaczynski's just going for it. Well if Reiny is third, Duhun will lead the championship. Yeah that'll be nice on me. So a lot riding on this particular ride from John Kaczynski from Australia's point of view. Because if Reiny finishes behind Kaczynski and looks that way at the moment, then the new leader in the world championship will be Michael Duhun from Australia. That's fantastic news. If you look at, I was just looking at the two Yamahas coming into the corners, it looks like they're having the front, you watch the front wheel, it looks as if it's chattering. When you say chattering it's very, very fast bouncing. And that could be because the front tires are wearing really badly. And if they are having problems on the front ends, then you can do whatever you like on the back end, the tire can be completely shot and you can hang on to it. But one thing you don't want is a front tire in bad condition. Because once you lose the front, it's the run for the band-aid time. Well Barry, they've tested, as you said earlier in this race, they've all tested with lots and lots of combinations to try and sort the front end out at this circuit on the final lap now. So perhaps Nick has got it right, his choice was right. Yeah, it's, you see Michelin, oh sensational. I mean you don't get a much nicer longer drift than that. It seems a bit strange to be doing it on the last lap, mind you, for us. Can't stop it. Doriga coming down into the main straight area now, but Michael doing, heading, no doubt about this, he's heading for a checkered flag and a win here tonight. With the, the dumb of the meeting, the to make a different front tire because they had terrible problems in that they turned up at Laguna Seca and they said well, what's the choice of tires? And they went, there it is. You know, there was one with one compound, one construction. And that is very, very hard because you have to try and set the bike up around a tire and it should be the other way around. Well, Mick doing really laying on some lovely slides here, this crowd that have been right behind him right throughout the night since he challenged for the lead and took it. You can hear them in the background that this will only be doing second Grand Prix win. Just winding his way around now and he's hard to be thumping. Barry, the brain would be going. Everything could be working at the moment. The second Grand Prix win coming up. Yeah, it's, it's the old Jeremy Burgess there with the headset on. It's not an awful long way to go now. It's probably about 300 meters. He's done it. He's won the one, he's won the Grand Prix. So Michael Doon from Australia takes this Spanish Grand Prix out of her. There's with a wonderful, wonderful ride. Ten seconds and perhaps even more than that. He's led that man, John Kosinski and Wayne Rainey comes in third place. Now that makes sure that Michael Doon leads the chase for this year's world championship. Fantastic news for Australia. And what a great ride, Barry. I mean, he had to do the chasing. He tried to get past once in spectacular fashion. Couldn't. Doriga coming across the line. And there's the front wheel over the air. So we've got a great shot of what it looks like for that front wheel to come out. Right, the flags are waving. Doon has won it. We'll be back shortly. A question is on everyone's lips. Well, there he is, the Australian hero of the moment, Michael Doon. Up on the winners podium for the second time in his career. Barry, a fantastic moment. Not only for the sport in general, but it will really give the sport a kick here. Yeah, and he really deserved it. I mean, that was a perfect race. Did everything spot on, no doubt whatsoever. Well, he had the chase and then he had to get past. He tried it once, he didn't do it. Then he finally got past and then built that incredible lead. So, great. Let's have a look at now at the race results. Recap those for you. And also the championship points because now Doon's in the lead. Yeah, Michael Doon first, Kosinski second, Rainey third, Goriga fourth, Rugy fifth and Lawson sixth. Championship points. That puts our Mick one point in the lead from Rainey, Schwantz, Kosinski, Gardner and Lawson. It's a shame about Lawson tonight. I don't know what happened. Yeah, we're not sure about Kevin Schwantz either. We saw him in the pits, but not quite sure what happened there. And it'd be interesting to find out what's happened to Wayne Gardner too. Obviously in the next couple of days you'll be talking to the people over there and we'll be interested to find out next time we go around in Italy just what happened to him. Well, yeah, I should think there's one happy Australian tonight and there's one pretty sad one. So I'll find out all the news and give you the SP next weekend. OK, good on you, Baz. Well, of course we go to Italy and then on through Europe. Well, Alan Jones, we go to Monaco very, very shortly. We've said it's a glamour race. It's one of the real traditional races and certainly a traditional street circuit race. Oh, yeah, I mean, it's the 49th. It's the oldest street race that there is. Unfortunately, the only sad thing about it is we haven't got an Australian in there to barrack for much as what we just did with Mick. Make a comeback. Yeah, that'd be right. OK, well, thanks Barry. We'll see you next time around. Alan, we'll be back after the break and of course the race of the year as the street circuits go in Europe and that's Monaco. What are the best laughs Tuesday night from 7.30 on nine. The 1991 Formula One motor racing telecast sponsored by Gillette, Toyo tires, Carlton and United Breweries and 7UP. Welcome back our big double headed tonight. We've just been to Spain and seen the Australian McDo and have a fantastic win in the 500cc bikes. Now we go to Monaco. And as you said, I'll know Australian taking part, but a pretty interesting race. Let's have a look at the way they line up because I was quite astounded when I saw the grid line up a little earlier. Yeah, well, I mean, well, there's nothing too unusual about the bloke is on pole as usual it in center. But Stefano Modner, great effort in the tear. No doubt about it. The old Pirelli's are very good on the street on the very tight twisty circuits. And he's used them very well to put the old Tyrol in second position from Betraezy, who said that he was balked very badly in practice. He reckons he could have beaten center. Well, that remains to be seen. Pique in fourth, Mansell in fifth and Gerhard Berger in sixth place. Right now, just a few seconds ago, as the cars went out on the warm up lap, we had a very remarkable incident here with one of the arrows cars. Let's have a look at that for you, Alan. Alex Cathy is doing it all wrong completely. Didn't even look like he was even going to make the corner. He's just understeered straight into that. That's around the swimming pools on the left there. So you come through a left and then a right and then a little tiny straight. Then you go back into a right, then a left again. And it is very quick through there. And you've got to put a wheel up on the curb to get through there quickly. But he just did it all wrong. I can only presume something broke because the car just looked like it went straight ahead. It didn't look like he was going to turn. But he's very lucky he's unhurt, but the car is very second hand. Well, it gets a bit spectacular around Monaco. Okay, well, we're just about ready to go racing around the streets of Monte Carlo. So let's have a look now as the cars are out on the grid. And Alan, that start line, it really is something else. You've got that little bit of a short straight. Then you go up the hill and that casino corner. I remember standing up there. You've got to be pretty brave not to flinch as you come over the top there. Well, yeah, there's the one minute sign telling them to start up the engines and get organized for the off. Yes, it's only you obviously start off first. I think you're no sooner into about third gear than you've got to start braking heavily to go into what is a reasonably tight right-hander to go up the hill. And that's where you get that concertina effect. And of course, more times than not, we actually see an accident there. Well, one of the men from the Australian press, Mike Cable, the first man that really start to write about Formula One races in the daily rags here on a regular basis, stood me by a tree and he said, if you can stand there without flinching, lap after lap, you're dead set, mate, as still you've got no blood in your veins because the cars over the top, they get really skittish. I remember your teammate had a rather nasty shunt just not far from where I'm talking about. That's correct. We're just looking at old Prince Rainier there looking down onto the starting grid. He's above what is traditionally the dais where the drivers go up and get the trophy. No, Patrick Tombo, I think you're talking about. He went down to that tight right hand where they all try and make a little bit of an overtaking maneuver through there. And he did it a little wrong and inverted it over the fence. All right, they're just starting the warm up lap now. So they're going around to do one complete circuit. They'll then form back up on the grid and ready for the off. Yeah, that was the year that our director, Brian Morelli, and I went over there and you were racing for that team, the Lola team, then the Carl Haas team. And I remember it was the first time we'd actually seen a visual figure of the Foster's. We can see the signs there on the sideboards. But you were the first one in those days with a Foster's T-shirt underneath the driving suit to actually promote an Australian made product. Yeah, I was very proud of that, to be honest, because I was there and all when I was racing in 79, 80, 81, I would have given anything to have had some sort of Australian identification. And when I went back in 85 and 86, I very proudly was able to sort of walk around with the old Foster's signs on and it was great. Barry, have you spent a lot of time around this area when the car races have been on? Yeah, I've been there. It used to be between the French and Italian bike races. I used to go there every year. It's one of the best Grand Prix's. It's a terrible place to drive at, I should imagine. But as far as the atmosphere is concerned, it's sensational. And as Alan says, I mean, it's just so good for motorsport. That's where Baz used to spend most of his time, right there. You see them floating on the water. Unbelievable, Baz. I mean, we know of yachts in this country, but some of the yachts that you see there are just incredible. You see some of the yachts there. I mean, the biggest yacht you've got out here would be a 10-metre boat. Sensei Khashoggi's thing. I mean, he added an Augusta 109 on the back of it and another little helipad on the front of it. It's just ridiculous. There's a shot of the Ferrari coming around. There's the swimming pool. That's where we saw Caffey. Just underneath the Foster sign, that's where he actually lost it, or just before that, and ended up almost to the right-hander. 78 laps. The track distance, of course, 3.328 kilometres. The race distance, 259.584 kilometres. Mansell. Mansell has disappointed me a little bit this year. He hasn't really shown the fire and the spirit that I expected of him, and betrays he's really outshone him. I'm just wondering whether psychologically or mentally he has retired, because the mere fact that he announced his retirement, I can only assume that he was sort of talked back into it through money, because old Frank Williams has obviously come up and said, hey, hang on, Nigel, I pay you to the big ones or whatever, and Nigel's probably said, well, hang on a minute, maybe I'm not going to retire. But I think once you've announced your retirement, maybe mentally he has. All right, we're not far away from the start now. Okay, so let's cross down to Murray Walker and James Hunt, of course, our Formula One commentators. And remember, everybody has to be in position before the starter will throw the red light, and then four or five seconds later, it's agreed. So watch for the red center on the left, Modena on the right. There's enormous psychological pressure on Stefano Modena. It's the first time he's been on the front row. And getting to the right hander at Saint-Davot first is going to be absolutely critical to the progress of this race. They are all in position now. 78 laps. It's a long, long time, a two hour race. Go! And away they go. It's a good start by Stefano Modena. All the rest of it is Senna leading. Modena second for Tracy third. Mansell is in fourth position as they climb the hill towards Massenet, Senna. And behind Mansell is Nelson Piquet. Behind Nelson Piquet was one of the Ferraris, I suspect, at Allianz Cross. And already Gerhard Berger has got a problem. And look, he's got part of the barrier stuck underneath. No, it's part of the front wing has been dropped, caught on and pulled off his car. And off goes Nelson Piquet. Yes, Piquet under a problem under braking for Mirabeau there. Berger, we didn't see what happened to him, but he's had to restart right at the back of the field. Tremendous start by Stefano Modena, but whatever he did, Ayrton Senna, who didn't get off the line as well, managed to get into Sanderbott ahead. And so Senna takes his expected place at the front of the field, but the start is always a lottery. And even Senna would have to work very hard to overtake anybody here. Overtaking is a problem. Mansell going well. And it's Frost and Alessi behind them. Now, Ayrton Senna, Stefano Modena, Riccardo Patrese, Nigel Mansell, the first four as they exit the swimming pool down to the Rascass. And you can see that, as ever, Ayrton Senna's trying to build up a lead, get a cushion. He's not succeeding at the present moment. It's very tight and twisty around here. In fifth position it's Alain. Frost has come up from seventh on the grid, of course, with Nelson Piquet definitely being out of the race. And effectively there is only one McLaren left because Gerhard Berger is right down the field. He's not going again at the back of the grid. And there's a gap developing already between Stefano Modena, there's Patrese in third position, Mansell, Frost and Alessi. So one McLaren, one Tyrrell, two Williams up front. Now this is the right-hander at Mirabeau down to Lowe's hairpin. Ayrton Senna, Modena. Interesting to see that the Williams Renault picked up through these tight hairpins here of Patrese. And certainly the Renault engine is very, very smooth indeed. And that may well be a factor in what is clearly outstanding performance through the hairpins by the Williams Renault. And Gertrude Senna is alleged ideally to prefer the V10 Honda engine to the V12 which he's got. And of course Modena has got the V10. Nigel Mansell hanging on in fourth place. Frost is fifth, Alessi is sixth, Moreno is seventh and behind Moreno is Gachaud. Nelson Piquet of course out of the race so. Gachaud going extremely well. Or is it Andre de Cesaris? Is de Cesaris in eighth position as they round the Rascat again. Nelson Piquet's race didn't last very long. The Monaco resident can walk home but he would rather be walking home a lot later than he's going to be doing now. So Senna, then Modena, Patrese, the first three are breaking away from Mansell fourth on his own. And Andre de Cesaris in the Jordan Ford using the same type of engine as the Benetons but not quite such a good specification is well up in the race. And into the second lap Modena is still within a second of Ayrton Senna. There they are. Yes and we might say that on the face of it there is good news in that Senna is not walking away from the field and at the moment thinking it looks like a race. However, I remember two or three years ago here or not even as long ago as that he had Frost behind him when they were teammates. And he played around for the first ten laps and allowed Frost to stay with him. And we wondered what was going on and then he just upped it another gear and disappeared into the distance. And I'm quite sure that Senna with his experience and the restraint that he now shows in his race in the tactical way he handles races is taking it very easy at the front of the boat. He knows he can't be fast. He knows there is no hurry and I'm quite sure he's driving well, well within himself. Nelson Piquet has gone out with rear suspension trouble. I presume he hit something but whatever he's out of the race. Gerhard Berger has gone into the pits to change his front wing. And now on lap four in this long long Monaco Grand Prix, Ayrton Senna is eight tenths of a second ahead of Modena. There is Patrese third, Mansell fourth. There's a 2.6 second gap now between Mansell and Frost who is in fifth position in the Ferrari. You see there as they go bursting through Casino Square down to the Mirabeau. You've got to look quite a long way up the hill to see Alain Frost. Big question, are the gearboxes going to last? Of the first four cars at the moment, the one that's probably got the strongest gearbox of the lot is the Tyrol of Stefano Modena in second place. Because we know that Ayrton Senna had problems with his gearbox in Brazil and we know that the Williams have had trouble with their gearboxes everywhere. Yes, certainly the Tyrol is the only one that's had no apparent history of gearbox trouble. But then after all, with the new gearbox this year, they haven't had a lot of opportunity for it to go long. And Monaco certainly puts a greater strain on the transmission of cars than even Phoenix, which is the only other street circuit of which they've raced. Modena still staying very well with Ayrton Senna. The question is just how much is Senna keeping in hand. I'm sure he's keeping some. But the trades is having to work to keep up. There's no doubt that Modena is having his pace dictated by Ayrton Senna ahead of him. It's not intelligent to drive closer than Modena is to Senna for two reasons. One is that on a circuit like this where accuracy is absolutely paramount, when you're following another car closer you can't be accurate. You cannot see the landmarks, etc., and where you're going. Your view is filled by the back of the car and the big rear wing of the car in front. And the other thing is, which of course then puts more strain on you physically. So you need to leave unless you're trying to pass. And Modena's car seemed to understand Modena's slope, then he had a problem. I suspect, I suspect he had a gearbox. He may have just gone in neutral. And Mr. Gear going into the hairpin now. It's a first gear corner out onto the seafront. So mistake for Modena, but he's contained it because he managed just to stay in front of Petrezzi. Yes, Modena in his 46th Grand Prix. He's got an enormous amount of experience behind him. It's his birthday today. He's 48 years old and his experience as James said earlier on starting years ago in cars. Where he was European champion, Asian champion, world champion. And now they are starting to close up a bit as far as second, third and fourth are concerned. Ayrton Senna goes through now to complete the fifth lap. One and a half seconds in front of Modena, no doubt due to that problem that the Italian had. But Petrezzi, Mansell are right with the Italian, Costi's fifth, Felici is sixth, Andrea de Cesaris is almost in the points for Jordan. Yes, what will be interesting now is following that little mistake by Stefano Modena is to see whether he can pull away from the Williams' that he held up a little bit. And whether he can close back up to Ayrton Senna. He now has the space to move from leading the Williams' to pull up to Senna. Down through the tunnel. This famous tunnel that makes Monaco so distinctive amongst other things. And they go through that at enormous speed at some 160 miles an hour. There's very good lighting in there now. The contrast between the comparative darkness of the tunnel and the lightness of the outside is not nearly as great. But of course to go through at that sort of speed is a daunting challenge. As is the swimming pool section. That's where Alex Caffey went off in practice. Unfortunately he's okay. And now we're on lap six in this 78 lap race with three times winner Ayrton Senna. Stefano Modena there in the Tyrrell Honda. So it's a McLaren Honda leading V12 engine. Tyrrell Honda second with sparks striking off the skid plates underneath it. With the V10 engine of Stefano Modena. It's still the V10 Renault powered Williams of Riccardo Petresi and Nigel Mansell third and fourth. Prost is fifth. Alessi is sixth where the two Ferraris. Seventh is de Cesaris. Eighth is Roberto Moreno in the only Venetian left running now. Ninth is JJ Leto in the Dallara with his Judd V10 engine. Tenth is Satoru Nakajima. Tyrrell left his Piro in the second Dallara and in 12th position is Pierluigi Martini in the Minardi Ferrari. Senna of course with three victories this year behind him and with three Monaco victories behind him in the last four years. Is a very subtle and contained man. He knows exactly what he can do. He knows exactly what the car can do. He's backed up by what is probably the best administered and organized team in the business McLaren and it all shows at a place like this. But in the end analysis it's going to be who finishes that matters. Last year if you finished in the top three you were one of the only three who had gone the race distance. Because Monaco is a famous car breaker and it looks to me now as though the Ferrari of Alain Prost in fifth position is definitely closing. Yes indeed it is. There is Prost. Four times a winner and he's closing up on Nigel Mansell that we are riding with now. Up the hill into the Massanet and Casino Square. Yes Mansell for a while held fastest lap until he caught team mate Petraezi. And this could be a little problem for him if he wanted to get past Petraezi because he's now getting attention from Alain Prost behind. In the meantime Modena in second place as after that little mistake he made. He seemed to arrive at that corner with a box full of neutrals and he has pulled away a little bit from the Williams-Renos. But Senna in the meantime is pulling away at front. Modena now just over two seconds behind Senna. And one and a half seconds to go to Petraezi. So it's all marginal stuff but Modena seems to be able to pull away just from the Williams-Renos. That legend on the right indicates the number one Ayrton Senna in the McLaren is in the lead. Four Stefano Modena in the Tirulanda is in second place. It did not show but Andrea de Cesaris the Italian, the man who's driven in more Grand Prix than anybody else without winning one, is in seventh place in the Jordan Ford. And Andrea seems to be a new man this year. My goodness that Marshall needs his brains testing. He was nearly collected by Ayrton Senna there and I don't know whether the Brazilian had to back off or not. But that's a very very lucky Marshall indeed. Senna then through Casino Square. Look at the gap visually as he drops down the hill. That corner that you were just looking up the hill there is in the most exciting one in Grand Prix racing to stand and watch if you're lucky enough to have the right sort of pass. And there's Senna, Modena, Patrese, Mansell, Frost. They're the first five. That's Alessi in sixth position. Closely challenged by Andrea de Cesaris in seventh place. Seven seconds behind de Cesaris is Moreno eighth. Leto is ninth still. Nakajima tenth. Piro in eleventh position. And the Pier Luigi Martini is still twelfth. Down to the. Gillette presents another great moment in nine's wide world of sports. Spring Queen Raelyne Boyle chose the gut wrenching 400 meters for her Commonwealth game Swanson and produced yet another magnificent and courageous victory. Boyle left the field in her wake as she powered down the straight of the QE2 stadium in Brisbane in 1982 to win her seven Commonwealth game gold medals with ease. Boyle first and hardly a dry eye in the house. Gillette, the best a man can get. You're looking. Gillette. The best a man can get. Malaysia Airlines. Enchantment. Wherever you fly. The people at Tamilwood were horrified when they saw me walk through the door. They thought, oh no, this great Scottish kid's going to haggle with us for hours. When I saw the grand quality of their homes and their prices, I couldn't haggle at all. I tried Tamilwood, their great value. No ordinary tire outlasts the Toyo Samurai. Welcome back to Monaco for our Formula One Gourm Prix, 10 laps down. Senna Modena for Tracy Mantle crossed to Lacey at the top six, but Alan Jones, the network over there, as I'm going to show you, but we will show you the replay of this very, very close drama with Ayrton Senna and the marshal. Look at this. Absolutely ridiculous. I mean, look at him. He's still not even over the fence. For a marshal to do that, that's, you know, it's quartering on criminal. I mean, there's quite a few marshals being killed that way. You know, I should think there'll be some pretty angry words said about that afterwards. Right. For getting that for a moment, we really do have a big race on our hands. A lot of talent starting to bunch up a little bit, but it's a very difficult place to find your way past. Yeah, it's a sort of circuit that you really got to plan a passing maneuver up to five or six laps in front. Here we've got the Tracy and the Williams. I think that if Prost can get reliability out of his car, he really is an excellent driver for this particular type of course. He knows how to pace himself. He knows how to look after the car and the tires. If the Ferrari stays reliable, I would say he'll be in the top three without any doubt. He just loves the circuit and he's a big chance. But we're seeing some wonderful photographs on board with the Tracy. We were. Yeah, great shots of cameras. Very steady. Right. Let's return you now to Murray Walker and James Hunt. And Gabriele Tarquini in the AGS, the Italian who qualified quite well, would appear to be out of the races in the pits. I can see him. You can't. And there's not much sign of activity around his car. Between the two Ferraris, Alan and Prost is continuing to show the young pupil Jean and Lazy the way things are done. Because Lazy was pretty sensational in the Tyrrell here when he drove the Tyrrell team. And Prost has a fact. Even now, Lazy's got a clear track in front of him. He's chasing Prost and Prost is pulling away from him. Prost within 1.2 seconds of Nigel Mansel now. There is the Williams. Now look for the Scarlet Ferrari, which is in fifth position. Then his teammate Lazy behind him. Andrea Di Cesar is still riding with Nigel Mansel exiting the swimming pool. Yeah, so this group of three cars, with Mansel in the middle now and you can see Patrese ahead, is a good example of the queues that form here at Monaco because of this no overtaking situation. You see Patrese is leading the group, but both Mansel and Prost, one gets the feeling, could go a bit faster and would like to get past him. But being in front, his rifle at Monaco, you hold pretty well all the cards if you're in the lead. That's 13. Long way to go. Prost. Massonet. Massino Square. Mansel in front of him. There's Patrese. This is where Prost had the big accident last year on the very first lap. He had to get out, run back and start again in the spare car, which gave him a considerable disadvantage in comparison with Ayrton Senna. And that is Berger. Gerhard Berger is definitely out of the race now. He came in and had a new wing fitted, but now this is lap 13 and out goes the unfortunate Gerhard Berger. I say unfortunate because it is his misfortune to be in the same team as Ayrton Senna. And Senna is a man who always dominates a team and he seems to me to have psychologically destroyed Gerhard Berger this year. And the Austrian tries he may has not been able to get on even terms with the Brazilian. And there is Senna leaving. Yes, and although we didn't see what happened, one would suspect that that was an error by Berger, but an understandable one because there he is walking back. No doubt very disappointed with his day's work and the trouble he had at the start. But the problem is when you get to the back of the field in a race like this, there's a tremendous pressure on you to try and charge through the field. And in order to get amongst the points, Senna working with the back markers with great bravery and I have to say aplomb. There, no problem at all. And Modena is holding Ayrton Senna and between them they have pulled away from the Williams's. That was Pier Luigi Martini in the Minardi Ferrari that you saw going very slowly. It seemed to me that he marginally held Senna up more than he held Modena up. He didn't seem to be aware of Senna and he was very aware of Modena. And the gap before was two and a half seconds. That was on the 13th lap. We are on lap 14 now and it will be interesting to see whether Modena has closed up. It looks to me as though visually he has closed up a little. But now on lap 14 in this 78 lap race, the order remains the same. Senna leads Modena second, Petrezzi third, Mansell fourth, Krasnopil for 86th. Dicisaric is still seventh followed by Moreno eighth, Leto ninth, Nakajima tenth, Piro eleventh and Mauricio Gujiman in the later house is in 12th place. The gap has been closed or was closed by half a second as a result of the passing of Pier Luigi Martini to Modena's benefit. And you can see now how the Italian Stefano Modena in the Tyrol Honda is definitely pulling away from the two Williams. He's now nearly four seconds ahead of third man Petrezzi. Yes, Petrezzi was being held up at the Rascasse there. Robert Sandibot and he's finally got through and it's taken him too long to pass Pier Luigi Martini who's a pretty experienced driver. And he got out of the way reasonably well for Modena. He wasn't very helpful to Senna but at least once he'd been alerted of the presence of the leaders, he helped. And he's still in the way and Mansell hasn't yet got past and this is not good driving for Martini. He is in amongst the leaders and he really shouldn't be holding them up. He's clearly not racing. There's a clear track in front of him. He's not exactly dicing with any other back marker so he really has no excuse. He should be pulling out of the way. There's a three car battle going on for third place and it's out of order for him to be interfering with that. Petrezzi passing over the kerbs there. Good shot from inside the cockpit. Hard on the brakes now. Direct down to first gear. First gear section. But first gear isn't too slow in these sort of cars. They'll do probably, depending on the gearing, but probably 90 miles an hour in first, something like that. Well the question is has Alain Prost derived any benefit from the passing of Pier Luigi Martini? I don't know what the Italian... See now he's in the way of Alain Prost. This is most unlike Martini. I think he's not usually a bloke who gets in the way and then stays in the way. Yes that's right. Certainly my recollection of his driving. He's intelligent and he's normally cooperative. But he's certainly in the way here and he's making Prost fight to get past him. And really you shouldn't have to fight to lap somebody. There are occasional circumstances where it's understandable. There are two cars at the back of the points, you know, fifth and sixth place, and they're having a big battle for that place. But really Martini has no excuse at all. And he's experienced enough to know the problems that the leaders have with so many cars here. I'm going to hazard a mechanical guess and say that he's missing a gear somewhere. To me from the from the tardy way that his Minardi was pulling away from some of those corners, that he was in a higher gear than he would ideally like to have been in. But anyway we are on lap 16 now with Ayrton Senna still under two seconds ahead of Modena, who is dealing with the traffic magnificently and very much keeping the Brazilian in sight. And his previous lap was actually quicker than Ayrton Senna's. In third position it is still the Williams of Riccardo Petrezzi, seven seconds behind Modena, ahead of Mansell, and then Prost. There is the Prost. Yes, and what this does do now, Prost has lost a lot of time. It gives us a chance, the Prost has got to clear that, to see just how quick Prost is. Because if he can go a lot faster than he has been when travelling stuck behind the two Williams's, then if he can find a way past it means that he may be able to chase and catch the leading pair. Mansell of course that also applies to, he's been stuck behind Petrezzi, because at the moment Senna and Modena are pulling slowly away. Well Senna's pulling away, Modena's dropping back slowly on him, but he's got seven seconds. Modena has that between himself and Riccardo Petrezzi. And for once I'm going to say I wish we could look back down the field a bit, because there's an absolutely superb scrap going on between Alain Prost's team mate, John Alessi, in the second Ferrari. Oh, we're seeing it now, there it is going into the new chicane, and Andrea Di Cesaris, both of whom have got past here Luigi Martini. And Di Cesaris, the Italian, is right up with the Ferraris in seventh place. The Jordan has yet to finish in the points. It so very nearly did so at Phoenix and Brazil and San Marina. Maybe it'll do so here, look! Yes, I think the director stays with this battle because it's potentially volatile. Alessi is a hard, ambitious young man and not known for giving away and making things easy. Di Cesaris is a charger himself, and it looks as if Di Cesaris is lining up to have a go. One of the obvious places is down the hill now after the exit of the Casino Square to try and outbrake another car into the Mirabeau, but he's not close enough this time. That's into the Mirabeau corner. And certainly the Jordan team are really making a good impression in Grand Prix racing. They've already beautifully turned out the team. The car looks extremely smart and functional. It looks quick, it is quick, and they have arrived with a real bang. What'll it be, fellas? Foster's Light, thanks. Happens every time. I like that too. Welcome back right around Australia, wherever you may be watching us from. You're riding with Roberto Marino at the moment, but it's center Modena for Tracy. The top three, Mansells there, Prostes there, O'Laisies there. Alan Jones, the new Jordan. I mean, it's an amazing little motor car. One, it looks very pretty, it looks very fast. And of course, the driver, we haven't seen him being so consistent with Jesuit for such a long time. We certainly haven't. We're just watching Marino go around there in the Venetian. But it is a pretty little car. It obviously puts its power down on the road very well indeed. And, you know, we're into our 20th lap and he hasn't thrown it into the fence. So he's obviously responding very well to it. You've said to me on so many occasions that if a driver gets the right seat, he gets the right driver, it makes all the difference. Modena, a great example also. Oh, absolutely. I mean, you know, nothing breeds success like success. And if a driver gets in a good competitive car, any driver, all he wants to do is wake up in the morning and say, right, with a little bit of luck today, I can win. There's nothing worse than wake up and saying, with a little bit of luck, if I have the field drop out, I've got a half chance of getting in the points. You know, it doesn't really bring out the best in you. If you've got a car that can do the job and you think, well, it's up to me, it just brings out that little extra in a driver. And we're seeing it with Marino, we're seeing it with Modena and even to Chesrus, who's been in a little bit of a doldrums the last four or five years. He's got a good little car now and he's running well. Let's rejoin Murray Walker, James Hunt. ...have the most pole positions. He liked to put up the most, the most fastest laps. And no less an authority than Andrew Ferguson of Lotus pointed out to me that Senna does not, in fact, always go for the fastest lap because he's usually in front and he doesn't have to make the fastest lap. It's the people behind him who are desperately trying to catch him and get past him who have to go quicker. Well, at the present moment, that is certainly the case. You've just seen the caption, Senna leading Modena by 2.8 seconds. The last time a Tyrrell won a Grand Prix as Marino goes through on the inside and takes veteran Michele Alboreto, who, by the way, is still suffering great pain from his two broken ribs as a result of the accident he had before the San Marino Grand Prix. Not to mention his gashed leg. But I was saying the last time that a Tyrrell won a Grand Prix was Detroit in 1983 and it was Michele Alboreto, who you've just seen in the footwork Porsche who was driving for Ken today. Now, lap 21 in this 78th lap race. And actually, the number of retirements that we've had are not nearly as many as I would have expected. Nelson Piquet out on the first lap, Ivan Capelli is out, Tarquini is out, Gerhard Berger is the most notable of the possible winners, who is out of the Monaco Grand Prix. But still plenty left in the running and Ayrton Senna has lapped everybody up to 18th place at the moment with no problem at all. He's leading by 3.7 seconds now. He's putting on the pressure in comparative terms, pulling away from Modena. In fact, there is now some 11 seconds between Senna in the lead for Trezzi, who is third. For Trezzi is five seconds ahead of Mansell in fourth position and Prost is within a second and a half of Nigel Mansell. Prost is fifth, well ahead of his teammate, John Olesi. The only real scrap on the circuit at the present moment is between John Olesi and Andrea de Cesaris, which we've been watching for sixth position. And you've just seen there he is, Roberto Moreno in eighth place. And that is de Cesaris, well, oh dear, Andrea de Cesaris out of the Monaco Grand Prix on lap 22. And he's parking up behind Nelson Piquet's car. Obviously, I don't know what the problem is, but it's taking the pressure off Olesi as Senna now comes up to lap the Lola Ford. I can't see whether it's Bernard or Suzuki at the present moment. It's Suzuki, the second, the Japanese driver, who looms over and lets Senna through on the entrance to the Mirabeau, dropping now down to Lowe's hairpin on lap 23. Yes, and now Senna's well and truly getting amongst the traffic. It'll be interesting to see just how well Staphano Modena can cope with the traffic. Because, of course, you should, in theory, have a slight advantage over Senna when getting amongst the traffic, because Senna being the leader of the race alerts those backmarkers that the leaders have reached them and are coming through. And so second place man, at least they should be a little bit more aware of his approach. Senna coming up to lap Gianni Morbidelli, the Italian in the Minardi Ferrari. He's only a 6.3, and he knows his manners and moves over and lets Ayrton Senna through. And there's a big battle developing now, which hopefully we'll be able to see, because whilst the lady was being challenged by Andrea de Cesres, only for de Cesres to drop out, Alain Prost is now right with Nigel Masel in fourth position as Ayrton Senna goes through to start his 24th lap, 3.3 seconds ahead of Staphano Modena, who was lapping the previous lap marginally quicker than Senna. But Senna knows exactly what the score is. He's matching Modena's lap time all the way round, maintaining a cushion in front of the Tyrol Honda. Ayrton Senna very close to his apartment now. The next corner, but one after this right hander, is where he retired so dramatically in 1988, and disappeared, walked back to his flat, shut himself away, and disappeared until the next day. It doesn't look as though that's likely to happen today, because Senna is very much in control of everything. Now that's Staphano Modena coming out to Morbidelli. You saw how Senna dealt with the Minardi Ferrari, and by the way, the V12 Ferrari engine in the Minardi is not to the same specification as the ones in the worked Ferrari cars, and they've been frankly a disappointment. Modena goes through, well, Morbidelli's using his mirrors well, 3.3 seconds on lap 23 was the gap. Both Senna and Modena passed Morbidelli. Senna is now on his 25th lap, and the gap has gone up to 4.8 seconds. Another example of how well Senna deals with the traffic. Yes, and Morbidelli wasn't as helpful to Modena as he had been to Senna, but part of that is of course because Senna, they're so used to seeing Senna going a lot quicker than a lot of these drivers to a certain extent psyched by him, and they see him coming and they jump out of the way, and that is, a lot of that is to do with Senna, because he doesn't hang around, they don't get out of the way, he tends to come past pretty forcefully, and that discourages them from it, and it really has, he's worked over the years, you know, this psychological advantage he has over the back markers, in getting through them, is something that he has really built up himself. On lap 25 now, well, he looks as though at the present moment, unless something happens to Senna when he's passing the driver, it wouldn't be the first time that had happened, or if something happens to the McLaren, which is always very unlikely, he's on his way to yet another prawn free victory, which would be his 30th in his incredible career. Now there are the two Lola Fords, that's Mark Lundell being caught by Riccardo Patrese, who is third, there's Riccardo, this is his 212th prawn free, and he's coming up to lap Mark Lundell in the Brabham Yamaha, Mark's first prawn free at Monaco, only his fourth prawn free altogether, but you can see that that Yamaha engine has got plenty of power, because Lundell ends smoking, and he manages to stay ahead of Patrese up the hill, now you can see the sort of problem that the driver has, see how wide the Brabham is in relation to the course, but Lundell sees Patrese, moves over, lets him through, and that's one of the Lolas, well it is Suzuki, Aguri Suzuki, out at Monaco, and so that means the Berger is out, Piquet is out, Capelli is out, Tarquini is out, Diccesares is out, with a stuck one, his problem was a stuck throttle, and now Aguri Suzuki, and he looked to me as though he had just slid into the arm-jove area, presumably as a result of a brake problem. Through the tunnel end, and you can now, the gap that's developed between Patrese, and we're riding with him now, this is the drop down with the Hotel Metropole on the left, the right hander at the Mirabeau, looking at it from Patrese's point of view as he comes down to Lowe's Hairpin, about 40 miles an hour, into the right hander before the 48, this is it, that leads through third gear, fourth gear, fifth gear, through the tunnel at 160 miles an hour, building up to 165 on the exit, and then down to the new GK. From on the, the gap back, it's now under four seconds, but of course it's going to bounce around with the traffic, but the traffic is now very much a factor in life for the rest of the race, although it will pin out with retirements during the race, the leaders will now, the circuit, the cars are pretty evenly spread all over the circuit, now we're looking from Patrese's brilliant Renault, he's got traffic ahead, and he's going to have to find a way round. So Patrese is now pretty much on his own, he's some 10 seconds behind Modena, but he's pulled away an eight second gap on Nigel Manson, Manson of course has detailed attention from Al Ampros right behind him, who is, if not imminently looking for a way past, he's certainly stalking him to look for a mistake, so on board shop for Patrese's car, we'll be looking to see what Patrese is going to do about this back marker. And it is of course Johnny Morbidelli in front of him, and he just drives past him, no problem, and whenever I'm stopped by people in Britain, and asked a question about motor racing, it's always is Nigel going to do it this year? Well I sadly have to say that on form at the present moment, it looks sadly as though Nigel Manson is not going to do it this year, with three retirements in the first three races, at Phoenix, Arizona, Brazil, San Marino, at Imola, he's only in fourth position at the moment, eight seconds behind his team mate Riccardo Patrese, and as James has said, only marginally ahead of Al Ampros, indeed I wish we could have a look at it, because we're concentrating on looking at the evergreen Riccardo Patrese driving round on his own now, in third position, 11 seconds behind Stefano Modena, and for my money, the man of the race at the moment is Stefano Modena. But until Harry calls in, we can't reach him. That's ridiculous, there must be a way we can contact our field staff quickly. He doesn't know this has come up, and we've got to deal with it fast, that's the best we can do. I'm needed here. Having me running around all over the place is not good business, Jeff. What am I supposed to do about it? Talk to someone. Look, this is no one's fault, but there has to be a better way. What do you mean, mobile firms? Possibly, but it may not be as simple as that. You say talk to someone, but who would you trust? I don't know, but we have to find them. Because we can't go on like this. There is someone. People at Tamilwood were horrified when they saw me walk through the door. They thought, oh no, this great Scottish kid's going to haggle with us for hours. When I saw the grand quality of their homes and their places, I couldn't haggle at all. Try Tamilwood, they're great value. After 29 laps of Monaco, they're the top six for you. But before we go back to Murray Walter and James Hunt earlier, at this circuit, it's one of the support races, one of the very exciting concepts of the world, where Tom Walkinshaw's Jaguar invitees, I guess we'd say, Ellen Jones, were allowed to run this circuit, big, big money and a car at the end of the pot of gold after the series of races. And a couple of Australians involved and done very, very well. Very well indeed. In fact, it's called the Challenge Intercontinental Jag Sport Series. And Jimmy Richards qualified third quickest, which was a great effort because all of the drivers were given a two day familiarization period in the cars prior to Monaco. Jim wasn't able to do that because he was racing down at Winton. He flew straight over there on the Monday after Winton. And really, this is no easy place to A, familiarize yourself with the car and B, familiarize yourself with the circuit. So to qualify third was a great effort. Unfortunately, during the race, he had, he couldn't get third gear and he had a misfire. So he did very well to finish in eighth spot. And David Brabham, who qualified fourth, ended up in second spot. So just very quickly, Derek Warwick won it from David Brabham. And then down in eighth position, Jim Richards for Australia. So a real good effort from David Brabham and particularly a good one from Jim Richards. And this is, this little series has created a lot of interest around the world. It has indeed. Yeah. In fact, I think the next round they go to Silverstone. That clashes with the Group A race that Jim is doing. So Alan Grice has taken the seat for that race. So Ozzie is showing really good in that series. Let's go back down to Murray Walker and James Hunt. The sports traffic has hurt him quite a lot because Patrese has come back from some 10 seconds behind Modena to now seven and a half. So Modena of the leaders has thus far done worse in traffic. But there's a long way to go and a lot of slower cars to pass yet. Back 31 then. Race order Ayrton Senna leads by eight point two seconds. Stefano Modena, second, seven and a half seconds ahead of Patrese, who is 13 seconds ahead of Alan Frost, who has gone up to fourth position ahead of Nigel Mansell, unseen by you on your monitors. The simple reason that it wasn't shown. Nigel Mansell in fifth position now dropping back. He's obviously got a problem. Jona Lacey, you can see the gap there between him and Nigel Mansell is in sixth position. Roberto Moreno in the sole Venetian body. J.D. Leto, who finished third at San Marino, having had to pre-qualify. A brilliant achievement is well up the field at the present moment. The Finnish driver is definitely a man to watch. Senna lap 32, eight point six seconds. He's now consistently lapping faster than Modena. Riccardo Patrese is nine seconds behind at the Williams. And it's significant, of course, that the Honda technicians here, who look after respectively the V10 and the V12 engines of the Tyrrells and the McLarens, are in competition with each other. And in first and second places with Senna in the McLaren, Modena in the Tyrrell, both of them showing the way to the Williams-Renos of Patrese and Mansell, third and fifth. The V12 Ferrari of Alain Prost in fourth position and the V12 Ferrari of Jona Lacey in sixth place. Roberto Moreno in seventh position. Mansell lost some fourth seconds to Alain Prost on his first lap behind him, but whether that's because we haven't been able to see him, but whether that's because he was in trouble or whether it's because there's a back marker in the way, we will have to just wait and see. I told you that Moreno was in seventh position. JJ Leto is eighth. Nakajima is in ninth position. That is Alain Prost that you see going round the swimming pool section. And he's up to Gianni Morbidelli, the man that we have seen lapped by Senna and by Modena and by Patrese. And Prost goes through now. But the first two, Senna and Modena, are both lapping in under one minute twenty-six. Riccardo Patrese is lapping in one minute twenty-eight point nine and Prost one minute twenty-eight zero. So Alain Prost, twelve seconds behind Riccardo Patrese, is cutting into the Italians lead. That is Alain Prost in fourth place. And he's the interest in the race at the present moment. You can see that he's eleven point seven eight seconds or was behind Riccardo Patrese. He's cutting into the Italians lead at the rate of one second a lap. The Ferrari looking healthy and sounding healthy. We haven't seen Nigel Mansell for a long, long time. He's still going. But he's now only one point six seconds ahead of John Alessi who is sixth. And I'm confident that Mansell has got some sort of a car problem because Nigel is a fighter and a charger. He loves Monaco. He has never done well here and was hoping to do well here today. But it was just obviously not to be. There was a time I remember when he was leading in the Lotus in the rain only to go off into the Alvarito Gujumin, one of the Ligiers. And Bertrand Gachot is still running in thirteenth position in the second. Jordan Ford is team-made of course. And that is Gachot on the inside trying to take Thierry Bootson in the Ligier Lamborghini, the blue car, who is twelfth. So you're looking at the tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth drivers now. There's Alvarito Gujumin, Bootson and Gachot. No problem up front for Ayrton Senna, lap thirty-four. We're getting on towards the half distance point as Gachot goes through, Gujumin goes through, takes Alvarito who of course is a lap down. And that's Prost. Now Prost is getting in amongst the traffic here. Prost then in fourth place. Watch him lap these men, past Gachot. It's like when you're racing for the lead or leading places as Prost is doing when you see a gaggle of four backmarkers all scrapping away in front of you. You worry how many laps it's going to take you to pass them. Well Prost has certainly been more aggressive than usual with the backmarkers, I'm glad to say, because that doesn't mean that he's got to be very aggressive. He is at least being firm and showing that he means business. And the new fastest lap for Riccardo Petrezzi that we see there. So Petrezzi's not beaten yet by any matter of means. He's the fastest lap of the race so far. But it's still well below the lap record. There's instead of one minute twenty four point four six eight. But they are still well not at half distance yet so they will have rather more than half a half a fuel load on and the fuel of course is heavy. That is Riccardo Petrezzi that you're looking at now. Second in Brazil. The only Williams car to finish a Grand Prix thus far this year because in six starts Nigel Mansell retired three times, Riccardo Petrezzi retired twice and Riccardo finished as I have just said in second place in Brazil. So I give him the six points which have put him into fourth position in the World Championship. And he's going through now to start his thirty sixth lap and he's twelve seconds behind Modena who is now nine seconds behind Senna. We're climbing the hill with the harbour on the right behind the barrier round the hotel for Perry now into Casino Square now dropping down the hill. Metropole on the left. Mirabeau on the right. On towards the tunnel again. And we just had a message here that Mansell has got a problem as we surmised. One really has to feel very sorry for Nigel Mansell having all the bad luck. His engine is apparently cutting out intermittently. That will of course mean that he just cannot race competitively with the frontrunners and problems like that if they're going to move in any direction tend to get worse as the race goes on. The question is on everyone's lips. Which one of us is going to end up in jail. Chances. So ridiculous everyone fantasized about doing it. You had a pretty good motive yourself. There ain't a lot of others. Some wish they had done it. You wanted him dead. Others will point the finger. Well I can't help thinking that Chris might have done it. We won't let you down. 37 laps gone now. Senna's still in front but a little bit of drama. Just a few seconds ago Alan Jones. I can't quite understand that. It actually looks like we're going to have a replay but he comes in. Oh he actually hit him. He hit the back of him. Didn't completely spin it but what is very unusual is he actually stalled the car and really I mean Nakajima has done enough Grand Prix's now to know that the first thing you do is whack the old foot on the clutch and keep that car revving because if he would have kept it revving he could have taken off. So he's obviously jumped on the brake to stop himself hitting the wall and stalled it and it's all over for him. Back live now and that's Nakajima making his way back to the pit but he almost took out his teammate as well because Modena had to really go round wide just to get round him. Well he locked up his brakes on the inside of somebody there but it's a shame because the Tyrrells are going extremely well. In fact Modena qualified on the front row and I think it's been something like 15 years since a Tyrrell's been on the front row of a Grand Prix so a great effort. Barry Sheen just asked a very interesting question sitting here watching the Formula 1 with us is that if Senna had that automatic gearbox I mean would he be that much quicker again round here? Well I mean it would certainly be a big help because to go around a circuit like Monaco and not have to take your hands off the wheel would be a terrific advantage. I mean taking that hand off the wheel down onto the gear stick even though these guys do it in a split of seconds it's still time consuming and would take your concentration a little bit. The help to keep the hands on the wheel would be great so maybe Senna would be even another second or so quicker still. Alright let's go back live now with James Murray. ...who is in ninth position but then he's got to lap again Martini in the Black Minardi Ferrari. Yes and that was terrible driving by Pirro going into Mirabeau he clearly didn't see Modena had no idea he was there and yet the blue flag was being waved at him and all he was doing was looking at the chap in front. And Pirro is an experienced driver and he's never been that quick so you'd think he'd have time to look around him but maybe that's why he hasn't been that quick. Well I'm saying apropos of Pirro's engine as we reach half distance now because we are on lap 38 but John Judd and his team have to produce engines for sale whereas of course Renault give their engines to Williams Ferrari provide their own engines, Wanda give their engines to their teams. And I think John Judd and his team have done an absolutely superlative job in their first year with this V10 engine after saving the day for the Williams team when they lost Honda engines by providing them with Judd V8s. So it's Pirro and still Martini in front of him and still Modena doesn't get past and the gap now is 13 seconds to Modena. Advantage, I mean taking that hand off the wheel down onto the gear stick even though these guys do it in splits of seconds it's still time consuming and would take your concentration a little bit but to help keep the hands on the wheel would be great so maybe send it even another second or so quicker still. Alright let's go back live now with James Murray. Pirro who is in ninth position and then he's got to lap again Martini in the black Minardi Ferrari. Yes and that was terrible driving by Pirro going into Mirabeau he clearly didn't see Modena, I had no idea he was there and yet the blue flag was being waved at him and all he was doing was looking at the chap in front. And Pirro is an experienced driver and he's never been that quick so you'd think he'd have time to look around him but maybe that's why he hasn't been that quick. Well I'm saying apropos of Pirro's engine as we reach half distance now because we are on lap 38 but John Judd and his team have to produce engines for sale whereas of course Renault give their engines to Williams Ferrari provide their own engines, Wanda give their engines to their teams and I think John Judd and his team have done an absolutely superlative job in their first year with this V10 engine after saving the day for the Williams Ferrari. And they lost Honda engines by providing them with John Judd V8s. So it's Pirro and still Martini in front of him and still Modena doesn't get past and the gap now is 13 seconds to Modena and Senna. Yes this is a crisis for Modena, he's losing four seconds of that here and Pirro, oh dear oh dear and that's not helping Modena, these two fighting amongst themselves. Pirro's all over the road he's just carved him up again. This is really disgraceful driving by Pirro. Modena's trying to hold second place down in the Grand Prix, he's got important work to do and Pirro's just twice he's moved over right on top of him and that will discourage Modena from trying to pass him because he doesn't know what the chap's going to do. Not only that but Riccardo Patrese, you just saw him come into the chicane, he's coming right up to Stefano Modena. Patrese in third position was a log 10 seconds behind Modena, it's down to five seconds now and if Modena can't get past Pirro and Martini, who is just as much of a problem as Pirro is, it's going to mean that Riccardo Patrese is right between the second place man. There is the second place man in the white and black Tirol Honda with the marshal doing a good job with the flag. He's letting Martini and Pirro know that Modena is behind him but they either can't see the flag or can't be bothered and you can see now Riccardo Patrese, look for him, there he is in the Williams. And there's the battle now that's developing between the Tirol Honda of Modena in second place and the Williams Renault of Riccardo Patrese third, catching Modena. As we've just passed half distance in the race, well there's one car out of the way and Modena very skilfully and sensibly uses Pirro to nip through but he still hasn't got rid of Pirro. And this is really a disgraceful driving by Manmelo Pirro, he could have let Modena go and then got on with his battle with Martini. He has no business to be holding him up. And Patrese having trouble, Riccardo Patrese but I should think the power of the Renault engine will get him past and it has indeed. So Modena has really suffered because Patrese, for whom he built up a 12 second lead through hard work, has had it reduced to nothing in the space of three laps courtesy of Emanuele Pirro. And is Riccardo Patrese that you are looking at now in third place with a real incentive. Does he incentive to catch the Tirol ahead of him, Riccardo, he's got past Martini. Now through to complete another lap, meantime, Beaten Senna is now 20 seconds, nearly 21 seconds ahead of Modena who still hasn't got past Emanuele Pirro. The Roman Emanuele Pirro, this is 27th or 3rd, he's not going to be very proud of this one. Now watch Patrese, I wonder if Patrese is going to have any more luck. Now this is from Patrese's car. And through at last goes Modena and is Tiro going to let Patrese through, no thank you, yes please he's through. Now and that has been a gigantic benefit to Riccardo Patrese, 36 years old from Hannover and he's on his way now. We could well see a change for second place, although Modena has got a clear track in front of him, he will be able to build up to the speed that he was at before. He's been lapping nearly 3 seconds a lap slower than Senna, they're on lap 42 now and this has, in my opinion, put the race on a plate for Ayrton Senna. The 21 second gap that he's got now will enable him, carefully and calmly with all his knowledge and experience, to control the race from the front. Yes, in the meantime the officials were showing the black and white cross flag to Pieroggi Martini who certainly was holding Piro up and Piro might well say well I was trying to get past him too and why should I look in my mirror, but that's not the point, he just laughed. And he's an experienced driver, he would certainly say he's intelligent, if he's intelligent why can't he discharge his responsibilities to the other drivers and really that has hurt Modena's race a lot but it's helped. We've got Riccardo Petrezzi immensely and what it has done is given us a battle now this is so we now look at a battle for second place courtesy of Emanuele Pirro because he helped Petrezzi through having solemnly held Modena up a further two laps after they both got past Martini. It gives us a big blow up and oil from Modena's car and it looks like Petrezzi has spun on it and that looked like a massive engine blow up. Petrezzi has hit something, Petrezzi lost control of his car on the oil and you can't say that's any fault of Petrezzi, it's one of those things, Modena's gone straight on and what a disappointment for the race, we've lost two second and third place men in a flash. Out 2 has gone Michele Albarreto, all of a sudden we're getting a lot of retirements. Well you can tell from the way Riccardo Petrezzi is standing indignantly looking down towards Stefano Modena and now his downcast appearance that he really is totally dejected and with every good reason has the marshals pushed in the footwork Porsche, the new one, the only one to start this race with Alex Caffe having destroyed the other one so thoroughly in practice. And now up into second place has gone Alain Prost, the two protagonists are at it again, Ayrton Senna leading Alain Prost in second position, that is Jean Alissi there going through and I remind you that either Prost or Senna have won the Monaco Crawl Free for the last seven years. Nigel Mansell is up into third position and whatever the problem is he seems to have at least partly mastered it because he has just done his fastest lap, Alissi is in fourth place, up into fifth place goes Roberto Moreno and back again in the points as he was in the San Marino Crawl Free at Imola, goes JJ Leto in the V10 junk powered Dallara. And that is the Ferrari going through on the inside and taking Thierry Bootsen in the Ligier Lamborghini and Ayrton Senna now out on his own, I said that he would be very happy with a 20 second lead, well he now has a 35 second lead and in the race distance that's left because we are on lap 44 with 34 laps to go, I can't see even Alain Prost catching Ayrton Senna. And we'll see how the lap times compare as the freshman comes up to Pierre Luigi Martini, the mobile chicane at Monaco today in the Monardi Ferrari, it's a Ferrari and he's at it again. And Prost really has to bully his way through. Yes and that was rather impressive, that's very unprost like driving and Martini has been given the warning flag for bad driving and not paying attention to his mirrors and I would have thought that he must be facing disqualification if he continues to be unhelpful. And here we are at the start, all about Spichini Alboretto walking back and we saw his football garros park beside the track, possibly something to do with the Modena blow up because he seemed to park it there in the same instance or maybe he was avoiding Petrezzi's resultant spin. Here we are the first 20 then while you watch Prost exiting the tunnel, it's Senna leading Prost by 40 seconds, Mansell is 15 seconds behind Prost and Lacey is 5 seconds behind Mansell in 4th place and it's Roberto Moreno in 5th place, Lato 6th, Piro 7th, Gugermend 8th, Thierry Bootson is in 9th place, a lap down, Bertrand Gachaud is 10th, Morbidelli is 11th, Bernard is 12th, Akinan in the Lotus is 13th, one lap down, Modena in 14th position of course now is out of the race so effectively there are only 13 cars competing on this, the 46th lap and I would bet big money that there's going to be several more coming out of the Monaco Grand Prix, only 3 went the distance last year. Now Senna is lapping at the moment 2.5 seconds faster than Prost but that was when Prost was still fighting his way through the traffic, there he is on his way. This is the man who has won more Grand Prix than anybody else in the history of Grand Prix racing, a magnificent 44 victories and that is Mauricio Gugermend out in the Leighton House, yet another retirement for him because Mauricio this year has only finished once, San Marino. Senna, an utterly commanding performance. No ordinary tyre outlasts the Toyo Samurai. We won't let you down. Toyo, centuries old traditions, state of the art technology. I thought that possibly I'd take you on a cultural tour of LA. Man I must admit when I see a painting like this I get emotionally erect. Bon Appetit. See I'm done already and I don't remember eating. I'll have a double decaf cappuccino. Do you have any decaf in the coffee ice cream? I'll have a half double decaffeinated half capped. With a twist of lemon. LA story. I'll have a twist of lemon. Mmm delicious 100% meat recipes. Tastier diced meat dinners in sauce. Now more than ever my dog is guaranteed to tempt fussy eaters. Alan, interestingly Marshall has just issued a 10 second penalty against Martini for holding up the traffic there. He's now going to come into the way in bay and lose 10 seconds of time. First time it's been implemented. It is and it's a bit frightening because if the buoyant cams hear about that they'll start doing it in the group A races because they got Mark Spector pulling just for a quick stop. He only had to come to a standstill and then take off so god knows what they're going to do after learning about this. But it was interesting to see poor old Bertraisi go off on the Isle of Medina. Modena, that was a real shame because he was going really well but it's not Modena's fault. He can't do anything about it. He's just blowing the engine which is very unusual for the engine he's got in that car. Motor racing's so fickle Ken Tyrrell would have been so excited. Great grid positions, his cars were going so well and then both out in a flash. Yeah well that's typical motor racing. You're up one minute and down the next. You're only as good as your last race that's for sure. Alright let's go back now to James and Murray. Brundle on Thursday in first qualifying, what did seem very strange to me was that he didn't get a chance to qualify on Saturday with just the time taken away from Thursday because there was no suggestion that the car was actually legal and they had plenty of chance to make sure it was running legal on Saturday and it seems to be a negative thing to do just to reduce the entry. There was no free over a rule such as that. Out 14 left in the race. Nigel Mansell has just done the fastest lap of the race. One minute 25.035 to bring him within eight seconds of Alan Cross. We might even have a race on our hands for second place. Yes and I would think that Mansell's mispower maybe has gone away because he's been lapping consistently quickly over the last three or more laps and he's definitely closing on Cross. That can happen. The telemetry on the engine can change. Certainly whatever it is because not only with an intermittent mispower, it doesn't seem to be doing it intermittently either because as I say, he has been consistently quick just the last few laps in this race. Nigel Mansell who I always refer to as the man from the Isle of Man. I think they're called Green in Birmingham. But he's said to be the man from Florida because he's leaving the Isle of Man and moving to an allegedly extremely palatial home near his great golfing friend, Greg Norman. Mansell now, let's see how he is going. He was eight seconds behind Alan Cross as he started the previous lap. Cross is now 45 seconds behind Senna and Mansell is 6.1 seconds behind. So Mansell is catching Cross in his second at the rate of two seconds a lap. We are on lap 50 so that means to say that on lap 53 he should be with the man who is in second place. And we have news from around the pit lane that Riccardo Fatrezi has walked in. We're hoping to have a word with him later on. But the Italian is now ready to talk to Jonathan Palmer. Riccardo, now that's a really appalling lap there. Tell us what happened. What happened at Modena. I was in the south Modena under the tunnel and in the middle of the fast band he blew the engine completely. He put down a lot of oil and I couldn't do anything because in the moment that he blew he put down the oil. I was in sixth place with a lot of oil I just spun and crashed. Was it the oil or the smoke that was the problem? It was the oxygen of the oil under the tunnel. Now Riccardo Fatrezi is understating things considerably because he would have been doing something like 160 miles an hour when he hit that oil and would have been immediately totally out of control with no friction between his wheels and the road at all. Straight off into the barrier and it's a testimony to the strength of his wheels designed by Patrick Head and his team that he was able to walk back to the pits. And now Ayrton Senna still 40 odd seconds. Actually Prost is carving into Senna's lead at the rate of 1.3 seconds a lap. But when I tell you that Senna's lead is 43 seconds you'll realise that Prost is very unlikely to catch him. And Prost of course is being stimulated, there is Alisi in fourth place by the fact that Mantle is catching him. John Alisi, not the best buy that Ferrari have made in the opinion of a lot of people. He's alleged to have cost Ferrari some £10 million this year. Not only for the £4 million or so that he's paid but the rest that will have gone to the Williams team and the Tyrrell team for both of whom he signed contracts last year as well as Ferrari. Broadly speaking last year if someone put a piece of paper in front of John Alisi he signed it. And since most of them were contracts it cost Ferrari a great deal of money to get him on their string. And of course he was second last year at Monaco as he was at Phoenix. A brilliant street driver we thought but not so well here. He's only finished once this year, sixth at Brazil. Yes and Mantle's charge towards Anna and Prost in second place has produced a response from Prost finally. And he has upped his speed a little bit and is now holding Mantle. And in fact has finally gone one second closer to Ayrton Senna because he's been monitoring his pace very much with Senna. They've been keeping the gap very much at 44 seconds for quite some time. But finally Prost as I say has responded. But five seconds isn't a lot to play with and when Mantle gets on a charge he can drive in a very inspired fashion. We're riding with Roberto Moreno in fifth position at the moment. In the bettered on board. Roberto got his chance at the Japanese World Prix last year after Alessandro Nannini had had his helicopter accident. And Moreno grasped it with both hands. Brilliantly finished in second position. As you can see he's doing well now. He is in fifth place in the new John Barnard designed car. Having finished seventh in Brazil this year he's yet to score a point. At the present moment with fifth position he's on his way to get two points. And the race order with Senna leading of lap 53 is Prost second 43 seconds behind Senna. And five seconds ahead of Nigel Mantle who is 12 seconds ahead of Sean Lacey-Pore. Roberto Moreno that you're looking at is in fifth position. JJ Leto one lap down is still in the point sixth. Emanuele Pirro is seventh eighth from eighth. Cascio is in ninth position. Bernard Tse Akinan two laps down in the Lotus is eleventh. Morbidelli is in twelfth position. Tomas is thirteenth and in fourteenth place is Pierluigi Martini with Gianni Morbidelli three laps down. The last of the runners in fourteenth place of the fastest lap we have so far is Nigel Mantle. Lap 48 one minute 25.035 which is some half a second below the lap record. And in the pit lane Jonathan Palmer is with Mark Lundell. Mark things seem to be going well for you. It all seems to come to an end. Tell us what happened. Mark I think Alborello must have dropped some oil coming through the tunnel. And myself, Stefano Modena and Petrezzi have all gone off on it. Quite a large accident. Maybe about one fifteen miles an hour. The ironic thing is I just overtook Eken Bernard on that same lap and he's now in tenth place. I'm a little bit cheesed off about it. A great shame. Hard luck Murray. Back to you Murray. I don't know if Mark Lundell can hear me but congratulations thus far on an excellent race. First time at Monaco and it certainly wasn't his fault. He hit a patch of oil. There's nothing you can do about it. Moreno there still in fifth place. This is lap 54 of the Monaco Grand Prix which Senna has in the bag. Problems accepted. He doesn't seem to be having any problems at the moment. He's not having a problem keeping ahead of Prost. The gap has come down another second but it's still 41 seconds between him and the Ferrari. The battle of the race now is Prost trying to fend off Nigel Mansell who's getting on one of his charges. But Prost is responding well. Their speeds are going up and up and up as the fuel loads come down. There is the gap. Just over five seconds. Mansell's just set another new fastest lap of the race. Prost has set his own personal fastest lap of the race on the same lap in response. And the gap's been between five and six seconds for some six or seven laps now. If anybody's going to create a new lap record here at Monaco it's the man you're looking at, Nigel Mansell. One minute 24.85 is his fastest lap so far. The fastest lap of the race which is four tenths of a second outside Ayrton Senna's lap record of 1990. That was the speed of 88.1 miles an hour. Head for the taste of real draft beer. Alan Jones, it surprises me a little bit that if Matsell makes a charge it seems to be late in the race these days. He doesn't seem to do it from the start, he doesn't seem competitive, half-way or better. Well he's certainly not his old self where he used to sort of give 110% all the time and be a charger right from the word go. He is making a charge now, he's catching Prost, but of course to catch somebody in the closing stages of this race in particular and to get around them is another story. I mean Prost has been around long enough now he knows the circuit like the back of his hand. If he just drives nice and clean and uses the power of the Ferrari, Matsell will find it very hard indeed to get behind, that's for sure. So that will be a very interesting thing to watch in the closing stages. Bounce something off you. Greg Norman, Matsell's best mate, has struggled to win major golf tournaments and major events around the world for the last couple of years. Matsell's in the same situation really, chasing the world championship with the motor cars. They're two very good close friends and now sort of living so close. It seems like the odd couple. Yeah well I mean they're both excellent at what they do and they obviously draw cards wherever they go, but Matsell's never been able to put it together in one season to take the championship and Greg has the odd fantastic game, but doesn't quite know how to put a string of victories together so I guess they are very similar in that respect. Okay let's go back now and see how this battle is developing with Nigel trying to catch Alain Prost. In eighth place, ninth is Bertrand Gachos still running in the Jordan Ford, unlike his teammate Andrea de Cesaris who went out a long time ago. Tenth is Eric Bernard still running, Mika Hakkinen in the Lotus, 11th place, 12th is Eric Comas. And here are the retirements up to lap 58. Gerhard Berger out, Nelson Piquet out, Capelli Tarquinis more later. And Matsell is now less than two seconds behind Prost, pressing towards Alain Prost. And you see it as they exit Lowe's Hairpin into the tunnel, 1.9 seconds, Prost lapping in 1 minute 26.3, Matsell 1 minute 25.2, so Matsell is keeping up that one second a lap faster rhythm and momentum as he closes on the V12 Ferrari of four times winner here at Monaco Alain Prost. Up to the swimming pool section, that daunting left, right, right, left again, and Matsell is going to be with Prost almost at the end of this lap. Senna really isn't slowing up, 1 minute 25.7 is nine tenths of a second slower than the fastest lap of the race, Nigel Mansell's. But what Senna will not want to do of course, and he'd be determined not to do, is to lose his concentration. He did that here at Monaco in 1988, and for his pains he drove straight into the barrier at the entrance to the tunnel. Otherwise he would have been on target now for five wins in a row. And incidentally people who think that Senna has created an all-time record in terms of successive wins are wrong because the great Albedo Ascari, or Ferrari, actually won in the 1959 Grand Prix in succession. Over two seasons admittedly, but they were successive races. And Ascari, one of the great drivers, still stays a long way ahead of Senna in that sense. And Prost is not very much ahead of Nigel Mansell, who's getting closer and closer on this, the 59th lap. With Senna well away on his 60th lap. In fourth position it's still Alain in the Ferrari. Both the Ferraris in the top four, so they may not be quick enough, but thus far they have at least been reliable, which is more than you could say for them in the earlier races this year. And behind Alain, it's Moreno, a lap down in fifth position still. Leto's still sixth. And now Mansell starts his challenge, continues his challenge rather, as he goes round Sanderlot, climbs the hill to Massanet. With the Statute of Monsieur Massanet overlooking it. Round the Hotel de Paris, with the residents looking down, having the noise of their peaceful rooms very much disturbed by these racing engines. But hopefully enjoying it. Into the Mirabeau. Down to Lowe's Hairpin, second gear. Stab of flame from the back of Prost V12 Ferrari. And Mansell, who I remind you has yet to finish a Grand Prix this year, is now in third place, winning for second, to improve his chance of points from four to six. Ten points for the winner. Air to the centre at the moment. 18 laps to go. If you get your line half an inch wrong at the swimming pool, you're in real trouble, as Alex Caffey discovered yesterday. When his rear wheel locked up in the Cookback Porsche. Now, remember what James said. Mansell can catch Prost, but the Frenchman is going to make it very, very difficult indeed to get past him. How will he do that, James? With great difficulty. There is no obvious passing place. The one natural chance he has is after the Casino Square, which we're just entering now, down the little short straight down to the Mirabeau. But he has to be absolutely perfectly positioned, and if Prost doesn't want him to pass, he can easily block him into the corner. The Williams Renault certainly looked very impressive, rather so happens earlier in the race, but that, again, is not going to be any real help when it comes to overtaking. Basically, what he's got to do is stick really close to Prost and try and force him into a mistake. Try and raffle him, jump around behind in his mirrors to make him start watching his mirrors rather than where he's going and hope you can force him into an error. But Prost is probably the worst person in the business to choose to do that, because with all his experience and his unflappability, that is not going to be it. And I would think also that Nigel, if he's going to get past him without any help from Prost, i.e. by a mistake or a problem from his Ferrari, then Nigel would have to be brave to do that and take a risk. And with the season he's had thus far, I think Nigel would be well happy to settle for third place rather than risk everything just to get one more place to come second. But that's easier said than done when you're in the car, the excitement and everything, it's not quite so easy to be dispassionate about it, and Nigel is not a dispassionate person. So watch for some fireworks, because I'm quite sure he's not going to let this second place tantalise him for too long, he is bound to have a go for it. He's getting into position, he's close to Prost now, and this undoubtedly is the battle of the race. Prost has responded, he's going quicker than he had been earlier in the race. I'm just watching Mansell's car to see if we can see any hint of engine problem in terms of where he suddenly loses a bit of ground visibly to Prost, but I would think that whatever bug was in his engine has now been removed from it, goodness knows how, because if he had performed like this for the last few laps I would have said his engine was running properly. Still the fastest lap of the race, Nigel Mansell, lap 53, 1 minute 24.85, but what a problem he's got in front of him, because Alain Prost has finished in the top 5 of the World Championship every year since 1981. 5th in 81, 4th in 82, 2nd in 83, 1st in 85 and 86, 4th in 87, 2nd in 88, 1st in 89, 2nd last year, and he's going to go back to 2nd place in the World Championship this year to Ayrton Senna, if he finishes where he is now, because Prost currently has 9 points in the World Championship, and would add 6 to make it 15, it would take him ahead of Gerhard Berger, who had 10 points when this race began, but of course is now out of it a long time ago. But Ayrton Senna would be 25 points ahead of Alain Prost if he wins. And Nigel Mansell, as you can see, James has said that Mansell is very much a fighter, and how he's fighting now, he sees a chance of 2nd place, this is lap 63. He's already lining up for Gerhard Berger at the chicane, but that requires some bravery, he is, and Mansell's going down the inside of the chicane, locked his brakes a bit, bravery it required, bravery it got, and great skill too, tremendous maneuver by Mansell, that really does require a lot of guts, and a lot of accuracy, and Mansell makes it into 2nd place. The road is very narrow here, we don't have a good angle to see it, now his front wheel was locked, but he just managed to slow it down and up, and that was, as one would expect, a very marginal thing, but he made it, and tremendous stuff by Nigel Mansell. And we were saying that he doesn't quite come to terms these days, but by gee, that maneuver that he pulled on Frost, that was a big one. Yeah, it's extremely difficult there, too. Because to get through that tunnel flat, you've got to take a pretty exact line. But he would have to have been so close to Frost to take advantage of when they were coming out of the tunnel. Frost would have been taking quite a bit of air away from the front of his car, so therefore affecting the aerodynamics. So he's had to do that. And then as you come out of the tunnel, you go over a brow of a hill, which makes the car very light. In fact, that's where Petraezi lost it on the oil. So the car goes very light over the brow. Then it no sooner settles down. And then you've got to jump onto the brakes. So to stay as close to him as he did through the tunnel, then pull out onto the left-hand side and go over the brow. And then as you see, locked his brakes up. Fantastic maneuver, really was. Nigel of old. Absolutely, let's have more of it. All right, let's go back now and see how we're progressing. Even if Senna is caught at the rate that Mansell is catching him now, it would still take the Englishman, according to my mental arithmetic, something like 25 laps to catch him. And there are only 12 laps left in the race. But at the moment, you are watching race leader, Anton Senna, on his way to his fourth Monaco Brawl Free win in five years. And that would be his fourth win of 1991. Firmly to rivet his hold at the moment on the World Championship of 1991, having won it in 1990. He's on lap 67. He's just gone around in 1 minute, 27.3 seconds. And Nigel Mansell, if he's on target and maintaining his consistency, should have brought the lead down to about 38 seconds when he goes through. And the Brazilian flags are already appearing, hurled, admittedly, in the crowd, ready to wave them at Senna when, hopefully, from their point of view, he goes through, having won at Monaco. And in third position, it's Prost. He's now six seconds behind Mansell, and 16 seconds ahead of Alessi, that we're looking at now, in fourth position. Moreno is a lap adrift in fifth place. Sixth position is still later on the same lap as Roberto Moreno. Seventh is Piro. Eighth is Bootson. Ninth is Gachot. Tenth is Bernard. Eleventh is Hakenham. Twelfth is Eric Thomas. And the last runner in the race in 13th place is Gia Luigi Martini. Three laps behind Ayrton Senna, and the gap is down between Senna, the race leader, and Nigel Mansell in second place to 38 seconds. And Mansell is continuing to lap well over a second faster than Senna. Alessi. The reliable Ferrari of Jean Alessi who failed to finish in Phoenix and Brazil. He was second here in the Tyrrell Ford last year, and impressed us enormously with his ability to get the last ounce of power out of the VFR Ford V8 engine, which powered last year's Tyrrell. And now, of course, the Tyrrells have beaten longer engines, both of them out of the race. Nakajima, when he spun at the chicane, and Stefano Modena, when his Honda engine let go in the biggest possible way to deposit the oil, which removed Riccardo Petrezzi from third position. Frost is now seven seconds behind Mansell, and we are on lap 68. Hakenham has gone missing. Mika Hakenham has gone missing. He was in 11th position, having finished fifth at San Marino two weeks ago. And that's it. That's his car. And Hakenham is out of the cockpit. So hopefully, he is quite OK. And it looks to me as though there's been a fire from all the extinguisher smoke now. Yes, and it looks to me as if the car was undamaged. So I think he may have just parked it with some problem with a bit of a fire around the back. And that may be all that mess is hopefully just from extinguisher foam. But the car had four wheels on it and appeared not to have been crashed. And here is the Ferrari of John Alessi. Ten laps to go to the end of the 1991 Monaco Grand Prix. Anton Senna, 38 and 1 half seconds ahead of Nigel Mansell. Frost, Alessi, Marino, and Leto are the top six. Yes, and Anton Senna, who's been easing back on his lap times for some few laps now, has slowed it down further and is lapping some four or five seconds slower than he could do if he wanted. And the man is just to look after the car, get it to the finish. And he still has 35 seconds advantage over Nigel Mansell. Mansell still has to keep going pretty hard. There's no point in him really trying to chase Senna. But Frost is only 8 and 1 half seconds behind. And with a circuit like this, with traffic and things like that, that 8 and 1 half second lead can disappear very quickly indeed. So he will want to keep going. He'll want to extend that cushion if he can do it without overstressing his car. Frost isn't fighting hard about it. He too wants to be sure to get a finish and pick up some points. Yes, you can see how much Senna slowed down by the fact that Roberto Moreno, who he lacked some time ago, is now within sight of the Brazilian's McLaren Honda. This is Roberto on his way to two points at the present moment to add to the no points that he already has. So he's going to move him into the world championship points for the first time this season. And that tells you the situation. You can see that Mansell is cutting into that lead all the time, 135 seconds, but not fast enough. Ferrari third, Ferrari fourth, Benetton fourth, fifth. Dallara judged in sixth and seventh places, Piro and Leto. So Emanuele Piro has moved ahead of his teammates on the same lap, both of them a lap behind, air to the center. So Leto out of the points, Piro into the points for the first time this season. Butson in the Ligier Lamborghini, two laps down in eighth position, as is Bertrand Gachot in the Jordan Ford, who is ninth. Eric Bernard is in tenth position in the Lola, also two laps down. Eleventh is Tomas hacking him out of the race, which means to say that the errant Pierre-Luigi Martini, the last of the 12 runners out of the 26 who started, is in 12th place. The center goes through. Looking down from the hill on which the Royal Palace is situated, the center goes through now into his 70th place. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, Gillette presents another great moment in nine's wide world of sports. Alan Wells, see if he gets a really rocket start. The men's 200 meters at the Brisbane Commonwealth Games took a fraction over 20 seconds to run. But it would take officials 20 minutes to decide that they couldn't split the first two place getters. Once again, Ayrton Senna doing a fantastic job out in front, leading this, the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix. Right now, it's back to Murray Walker and James Hunt. One second a lap game is not going to be enough. You remember that in Brazil, Ayrton Senna slowed right down, and in Imola, he slowed right down. He's actually lucky to have finished races this year because he had his fuel pump hanging on by two wires in Phoenix. In Brazil, his gearbox packed up. San Marino, the oil pressure light had been showing for some 20 laps, but he got home. It's not enough to be good. You've got to be lucky and vice versa. Senna now on his 73rd lap in the 78th lap race. Got just that short distance between him and yet another victory, the fourth of the year in the World Championship. And it will be his fourth in five years at Monaco. A superb record. So Senna, Mansell 32 seconds behind, Frost third, 10 seconds behind Mansell now. And 15 seconds ahead of Alessi, who is fourth. Moreno is fifth, but has been lapped. Piro is sixth, but has been lapped. Lutsen has now moved up to seventh place because as James forecast, Plato has lost yet another place. And in, there's a stop, Ferrari there. And it is that of Alain Frost. And that means to say that Alessi goes up into third position. I can't see what the problem is, but the mechanics are looking underneath of the gearbox and jacking the car up. Well, Alain Frost is seeing a certain four points disappear. Out of the pit lane, I suspect there was something jammed under the car. They had to jack it up and then let it down again before Frost could get away. Maybe the pneumatic tire wrench, I'm guessing. But for whatever reason, Alain Frost has slid down the field now. Alessi has moved up into third place. Ayrton Senna, on his untroubled way, as ever, is on the lap 74 with another four laps to go at the end of this one, 75, 67, and eight. And Frost was actually in for a tire change. We didn't see the beginning of it. And it was a bungled, muffed tire change of which the Ferrari team cannot be at all proud. Well, I can't believe that was his only reason for coming in, because it would be a bungled decision, unless he had a puncture or something, to come in at this late stage of the race with the lazy in striking distance of him, but wouldn't have caught him if the tires were working at all for Frost. And that makes me, again, suspicious of Frost's motivation and the way he's thinking, because really, he should have been fighting for second place rather than going in for tires. Now, this is the only scrap on the race. It is in the race. It is between Lertron Gasho in the green Jordan 4 and Eric Bernard in the LaRouche Lola. Bernard had a struggle last year, because he was fighting against Gregor Foytek, and he took the points position from the Swiss driver, Foytek, on the very last lap. He's not fighting for points at the moment, because Gasho is in eighth position, but he is fighting. So Senna now 26 and 1 1 2 seconds ahead of Mansell. He's on his 75th lap. Alessi is third. Down the fork goes Frost. Fenton is still Moreno. And sixth is still Emanuele Pirro, who's going to earn a point. But there will be people who say that he doesn't deserve to have earned a point from the way he was driving earlier on in the race. Senna now, you see Moreno is right up with Ayrton Senna. I mean, this happened before in the previous three races this year, and we discovered subsequently that it was because Senna had a problem. I don't know whether he's got a problem or not now, but he lets Moreno through. Now the gap is down to 21 seconds. It's going to be very interesting indeed, but I'm pretty sure, I really am guessing, but I'm pretty sure that Senna has decided to dawdle home for some reason. Well, he's got the space in which to do it. And certainly his lap times don't at the moment suggest that he's got a serious problem, unlike Gasol, where he had the car stuck in pit bulls at the gear, I think. And couldn't really cope. But it is, the gearbox has been a bugbear, for the McLaren team, and it was last year. Senna finished a lot of races with less than a full complement of gears. And that could be a problem around here, but I don't think he's got one at the moment. He's still lacking quite quickly enough to hold on. Mansell's got much too much to do to catch him now. So Senna's just pacing himself in to the flag. He doesn't want to take any risks with traffic. He doesn't want to take any risks mechanically for the car. No reason to do that. He's done his work. There you are, nearly 17 seconds still over Mansell with only three laps to go. He's on lap 76. So he's got this. Lap 77, lap 78. 17 seconds lead over Nigel Mansell. He's actually gone round the last lap five seconds faster than Senna. So if James and I are right and Senna is coolly pacing himself to victory, it underlines his coolness. And that, I think, was JJ Leto in the background going out of the race, which certainly makes sense. Senna coming through to complete his 76th lap and start his penultimate lap, closing again on Moreno. And out of the race, Berger, Piquet, Capelli, Tarquini, Diccesaris, Suzuki, Nakajima, Modena, Patrese, Alvaretto, Huckebein, Lundell, Morbidelli, Hackenham. And now Leto. There are 11 drivers left in the 1991 Monaco Grand Prix. And one of them is Ayrton Senna, who is now on his 77th and last but one lap on his way to his fourth victory of the year and his fourth victory at Monaco in five years. Now, where is Mansell? 16 seconds behind. And it was 17 and a bit seconds on the previous lap. So Senna has definitely speeded up. 1 minute, 27.6 compared with Mansell, 1.27.2. The Brazilian does not appear to have a problem, notwithstanding the fact that Moreno has unlapped himself. Senna, in fact, has closed the gap between himself and his Brazilian countrymen that had been built up by the Benetton Ford tribe. So Senna into the chicane for the last time but one. We're riding with Roberto Moreno out of the chicane, down to the tabac, the left-hander, sweeping left-hander now, which goes into the swimming pool section left, right. And Senna has clearly decided that he's going to get a shift on because he's now up with Moreno and, I think, trying to get past him. Yes, I think Senna has a rather strange driving by Senna. He slowed down to let Moreno pass, then speeded up himself and wanted to get back past. But I think he's just having, I would only guess he's having a bit of fun to try and keep himself awake. Remember, he's very tired at this stage of the race. Takes an awful lot out of you physically. And to have some mental exercise to do is often helpful. But Senna now, on his last lap, proved himself the absolute master of Monte Carlo street circuits. He was masterful, as usual, in qualifying. His brilliance in traffic then came into play. And that put a very stern challenge from Stefano Modena in its place. Modena was able to cling on to Senna very effectively until they got seriously into the back markers. And in fact, he then fought Mancione for quite some time. And the gap was still in single figures for all half distance of the race. And at that point, then Piro, Modena got behind a man, Piro, who was himself battling to lap Martini. Piro just ignored Modena's presence. Modena was stuck behind him for two or three laps. And all of a sudden, Senna was out of sight. And Modena was having to fight for his second place behind Patrese, who had come in from 12 seconds behind, courtesy of Piro's blocking. In fact, it became academic. And Senna went on his untroubled way for his fourth draw-free victory of the season. Four out of four fantastic performance. No one has ever won the first four draw-free of the season. That is about to be changed and has been changed. And Ayrton Senna had victory in the 1991 Monaco draw-free to those of 1987, 1989, and 1990, and the first three races of this year. Nigel Mansell scoring points for the first time this year by finishing in second place 18.3 seconds behind Ayrton Senna, who was two seconds faster than Mansell on the last lap, proving that he was indeed taking his time. We look now at Jean Alessi finishing on the podium for the first time since he joined the Ferrari team at the beginning of this year, coming home in third place and a long way behind. And as last year, only the first three drivers have gone the full 78-lap race distance. Roberto Moreno finishes fourth in the Benetton board, a lap behind. Alain Prost finishes fifth, Emanuele Pirro takes his first point of the year and his first point for Dallara, who thus scored points two races in succession by finishing in sixth place. Thierry Bootson, seventh, two laps down. Bertrand Gachot, eighth, two laps down. Bernard Ninth, two laps down. Eric Comas, similarly, two laps down in 10th position. 11th is JJ Leto, three laps down. So both of Dallara's did eventually finish officially. And Pierluigi Martini, I think, will be classified whilst all the except the last five. Prost, the fastest lap of the race, one minute 24.3, and that is a new lap record. Yes, and that was done on the fresh tires after he stopped, after he stopped. And I find that, happily, the worst fears about Prost's pit stop were not founded. He did have a problem with one of the wheel rims. And look, it was leaking, so effectively, he had a flat tire, so he did have to go into the pits. And then there was a problem also with the Ferrari organization in there, because as we saw, he didn't get out of the pits very cleanly. But of course, on fresh rubber with a light fuel load, it's not surprising that he got consolation, the fastest lap at a new lap record. But to a man of his accomplishments, that is very thin consolation compared with losing second place, because that would at least have kept him vaguely alive in the chase to the championship for Senna. Senna really with a huge lead now, but believe me, it is not over yet. We're only four races into a 16 race championship. Senna has been dominant. He's driven brilliantly, but he has also had luck on his side. As Murray pointed out earlier, his gearbox, he was stuck in only one gear in Brazil. He had a fuel pump hanging off in Phoenix. So both cases, in both races, you could have said he was lucky to have finished them at all. And his luck can turn, and other people's luck can turn the other way. And it does tend to do this. I don't believe myself, whilst I think obviously Senna is favorite to win the championship, he was favorite before the season started. So nothing's going to change. We hope to show you that in just a few moments' time. But Alan Jones, I get a little tired of reading in the papers about, you know, Santa winning this and Santa winning that and how the sports change. And Barry, same thing applies. I mean, when Fangio kept doing it and Jim Clark did it before him or after him, I mean, they were treated as heroes, those people. This fellow is frowned upon in so many areas. And I can't understand that because he's absolutely brilliant. I think he's getting accepted a lot more now though, don't you, Alan? After all the aggro from last year and this year, he seems like a changed person. He seems really happy now. You saw him waving his arms and he didn't used to do that, did he? Well, and slowing down outside the McLaren pit and doing a wheel spin, that's very uncenter-like. But at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter. I mean, it doesn't matter what you think of him. The guy is a magician. He's the best driver in the world. And he, if nothing else, deserves respect in that area. Well, Alan, going up to meet the Prince, a fantastic moment. Yeah, and Stephanie. LAUGHS Yes, he's a lot happier now. Like last year, as Barry said, he'd be holding the trophy up maybe, but he'd still be in racing mode. He'd still be very serious. He's a lot more relaxed as the old Nigel. It's the first time he's been up in the dais for a while because he's had a lot of bad luck. But, no, he's a much more happier person than himself, I feel. And, you know, he's obviously... I mean, the guy is the modern-day Fan Joe. I mean, it's as simple as that. Interesting there, Nigel Mansell holding his arm above his head and waving it. We wouldn't have seen that a year ago. No, well, I mean, you know, these guys, forgive and forget, they're all professional guys. They've got a race against one another. And I think they just get on with it after a while. They all sort of have their little throw-handbags at one another every now and again. But, you know, when that's all over and done with it, they sort of get on with it. Did you have a big purse? No. He kept it closed and he did. The thing with Senna is, I mean, it's so fantastic when you think the way he winds himself up for qualifying. And I think people don't really appreciate how psychological the old qualifying thing is. Well, that's right. You've got to psych yourself up, and you can actually over-psych yourself. You can get to the stage where you get so excited or so psyched up that you start locking up wheels and flat-spotting tyres and overdoing it. He seems to be able to do it right on the edge and do it every time. We were probably a little bit naughty there. We were talking over the national anthem and we really didn't think that was being played at the moment because we couldn't quite hear it. So we apologise to anybody that's offended with that. But there we go. The champagne is now being sprayed. This is one of the few areas that are actually down at the level with the photographers normally right up high above them. Have a look at this. He's not missing anybody. You see, at one time he wouldn't do that, would he? He's like Jack the Lad now. Let's go out and have a bit of fun. OK, so plenty of French champagne being sprayed around there. And Nigel Mansell in centre. I can't believe the friendship that's come back there. That changes on a week-to-week basis. Alan Jones, let's recap the race results and, of course, the drivers' championship and the manufacturers' table. Well, yet again, another 10 points to centre over Nigel Mansell. He's finally finished one and drove really well. And that was a great passing manoeuvre over Prost. John Olesi in third place, Roberto Marino in fourth, Alain Prost fifth and Emanuele Pirro in the Dallara with one point after he'd been holding up everybody. And he's finally come through to get a point. Now, the World Drivers' Championship, that means centre now is with four wins, 40 points ahead of Prost, who has only got 11. He's 11 in second place. Gerhard Bergesen as team-mate is in third place with 10. And Bertrazi, Mansell and Piquet all in equal fourth place with six points each. Now, the Constructors' Championship, McLaren, Honda continue to romp away. They've got 50 points over Ferrari with 16. Williams-Renault on third place with 12. Benetton-Ford in fourth place with nine. And Tyrrell and Dallara in equal fifth place with five points each. OK, thanks, Alan. Well, Barry, back on here next weekend we go 500cc racing again. That should be another marvellous race this time out of Italy. Yeah, it should be good. And if we get another result like tonight, we'll all be happy chappies, won't we? Yeah, we've sort of forgotten that because we've been watching the Formula 1 race. But Mick Doon, if you missed the race earlier, did go on to win tonight's Grand Prix out of Spain at Jerez. And just a marvellous, marvellous result for him. So looking forward to that next weekend. Yeah, it should be good and it would be interesting to read in the papers what's actually happened to Gardner. And Barry, the week after that we go to Canada for the Canadian Grand Prix. Yeah, that's at the Il Notre Dame, which is the Cirque du Jules Villeneuve. And that's on Monday, 3 June. It's live at 4am. But just check your local guides to make sure that it's in your area. All right, well, thanks for hanging around, boss. That's a bit of a breakthrough for you. No, it was good. That's always a really good one to watch. Yeah, it is a good race and a good feeling. And we'll see you, of course, the weekend after. Yep, I've got a free weekend next weekend. We're flying back to the Gold Coast tomorrow morning. You parallel, you parallel-outs. But what I'm wearing, so discreet, with three little buttons, so buttoned, pure and modest, you have the nerve to call audacious. Ah, I'm wrong, I see that. A mother hobbit. That's what I'll get. Nothing but sackcloth up to here. Continue. He said you'd bought a vulgar dress. A cad. That was much too intimate. What did he say next, for example? I don't know. For example, why didn't I have a pretita? Was it deliberate? An insa. An insa? But why don't you wear one? I never do, it leaves marks. Yes, but without anything on, it all shows. You must surely realize that. What do you mean? Eh... Ah. That's part of the effect. It has buttons, only it's supposed to show. Ah. Ah. Is this silk? No, it's pure cotton. No, he asked me whether or not it was silk. He put his hand right into my dress. Just like that? Isn't that something? He didn't have to touch me. You could have asked. No. I prefer wool most of the time. Because I always feel cold in the stomach and the bones. Ah. I wonder... if I'm a nymph. He just ruined the whole thing. He grabbed me, yanked me, tore at me. I can't imagine what he had in mind. Oh, so sorry. Ah, another maneuver. Ta-da, ta-da, ta-da, ta-da. Whenever he shoots the gills, my skirt went up. Well, couldn't you just, eh... there. But that's not possible. It's been cut on the bias, so what can I do? Ah. Well, if you couldn't cover yourself up, couldn't you have moved over a little? I didn't have time. All of a sudden he took his hand and put it here. I was so freezing, I could barely think, but I knew he had something in the back of his mind. I took his hand away. He put it right back. Trying to drive. You put it right back. I took it away. You mustn't put your hands there, signorina. You really think it's my fault? No, I don't think so. Men can do anything they like, anything at all. But a man is a man. I can see now whose fault it is. The Dacran dresses up because then I'm nude. Their legs are exposed too much, so that makes me obscene and improper. And how about the bite? Look at the biting! I can't see the road! The bite isn't just... Look, look what he's done! Please, you've got to move. I can't see the road. Will you come get out of the way? Ah, all right. He bit me. He didn't like me. My fault. Well, what, eh... what did you do then? Me? I pretended to be asleep, very quiet. Oh, I was a mouse with my eyes closed. I pretended I was on a board, a board that was swaying and rocking. So ball me, then I heard the sound. It was him. Do you know what he was saying? He said that you were... He said that? Yes. Well, then what? What did you say? Nothing. I slept on it. Not a muscle moved. Not a muscle. So still. I was an angel. A hand. A hand. It's touching me. It's moving, going. Could it be the hand of the monster? Oh, Lord, where is it going? Where? It's going lower. Slowly. What is he up to? What is he going to do? Where is he going? Lower and lower. Where is he going to stop? Where? Where? Where? Where? Where? Where? No! No! I want to get out! Don't touch me! You're a dirty old man! No! No! No! No! No! No! Keep away! Help! Help! I can't hear! No! Wait! Come here! Help! Help! Come here! No! Come back here! Stop! Help! Stop! Stop! Stop! Help! Stop! Stop! Help! Help! Help! Help! Help! Help! Help! Help! Help! Help me! Help me, Jim! Oh, what happened? Why? Why? Why to me? What did I ever do to him? What happened? In broad daylight, he attempts to criminally assault you? I swear I don't know. All of a sudden he went berserk. He seemed to be such a fatherly man. All I did was tell him. Ah, no. No, no, no, no. I know how it will come out. I'm not going through that again. It doesn't matter. I don't want to know. Here, come on. I'm going to Rome. Get in. Here. Ah, no. You're not getting me in there. No, I'm not going to. You're not getting me in that car. It's not a deserted road. The police of the forest ranges are sure to drive on this road. As you wish. I'll be going then. Oh, there's a pine needle. What I want. I can use it on my dress. Well, I'm sure it will be all right. Best luck to you. Ask me just what my dress looks like. It must have been me. You can't be honest, huh? That's all. I'm not good at telling a story. That must be it. There, now nobody can say I'm exposed. Ah, just look at this. I've got a blood clot. I know it. No, it's not. It's just a little bruise. It'll go away in a few days. I'm sorry. I've got to be going. Listen, if you insist. I'll telephone and I'll get somebody to help. You leave me off at the end of the road. That's as far as I'll go. Aye? I've got to make that phone call. Of course. I'm sure we can find a phone. It's no problem. Stop! Don't get out. Don't move. Don't move. Stay. There. I'm over here. You're over there. Good. Stephen King. You know what a graveyard really is. Author of the Oscar-winning Misery. A place where the dead speak. And now, his all-time best-selling tale of horror comes to television for the first time. What did we do tonight, John? Pet Cemetery. What we did last was our secret. Don't go out. Stay at home. Has anyone ever buried a person up there? But lock your doors. Daddy's gonna do something really bad! 8.30 tonight on 9. Stephen King's Pet Cemetery. Throughout her incredible career, Debbie Burns performed many of the classic songs of the stage. Finally, Debbie has recorded her finest moments on a superb new album. Caught in the act, Debbie Burns singing the best from her outstanding stage career, available now on album, cassette and compact disc. Malaysia Airlines. Enchantment. Wherever you fly. Don't underestimate it. You ought to be congratulated. You know why it happened, don't you? Sure, I know. I don't wear a brassiere. My legs are showing and my dress is sacrum. It's obviously all my fault. No, no, that's not the reason. Italians can get around just looking at a female on television. Italian men are all sexually frustrated. The reason simple as that? Yes. I noticed that during my stay here. Well, then you're visiting here. That's right, I live in America. It's so nice to meet someone from America. Thanks. Italian men are sexually obsessed. It's really all we think about, you know. It's like an occupational hazard. But as you know, in New York, someone is murdered. Nobody cares. They continue walking down the street. Now in England, it's really us. You can be in bed with a girl and nothing happens. It's true. More intellectual. Of course. They never try to make you feel guilty because nothing happened. Complete freedom. I never felt I had to. You know. But that's how it should be. Imagine that going on here. You know, whenever a man in Italy is with a woman, he can never just be friends. For example, when in bed, I like to just be close together. Oh well. Their minds are centered around other things. Now in London, they're not sexually repressed. Much more cultured. Rude-minded, too. You wear anything you want. Loin cloth, leopard skin, black cape. Nobody bothers you. No one is out to prove anything. No one should be sensuous. Then you're free to arrive at your own morrow code. Right. Why are you stuck? You wanted to use the phone? There's one outside the building. Well, you've been so nice. Now I'm not afraid. Good. I hope you don't mind. I have to call someone. I'm embarrassed to tell you. Tell me what? Well, after all that philosophy, here I am for you, girl. What? But I'm really serious, woman. Excuse me. Soon. You just wait there. I'm on my way. I can't bear being far away, darling, because I can't live without you. Work is unimportant next to you. Work and wait. All I'm able to think about is tonight. I'm going to be a good boy. I'm going to be a good boy. I'm going to be a good boy. I'm going to be a good boy. All I'm able to think about is tonight. And you? What were you doing? Asleep, were you? No, no, I'm sure I know. You were dreaming about the two of us. The two of us in bed together. Oh, that... Oh, is that how you feel? I... You know, it's worse the day after for me, too. It's true. After a big meal, I'm even hungrier. Ratherless. No, don't do that. Stay in bed. Don't get dressed. I'll come in so quietly you won't hear me. Then you're mine. You know you can't get away from me. I always get what I want. No, don't get up. Stay in bed and wait for me. All right, darling. We'll do what we did that time in Lugano. You'll undress me. I'll put our song on. And then? Be patient, my love. Not so fast. Of course I remember. I remember everything. Everything about you. Like one body. You're so pink and soft all over. We'll kiss each other forever. I'll be there soon, my love. And soon you'll be close to me. Your body with mine breathing with one breath. Your white throat, white, whitest, driven snow. Repeat after me. I will consume you. I will consume you. You will consume me. Consume me. We'll consume each other. We'll consume each other. It is clear that we will be together. It is consummate. I'm very pink. I just want you to know that. Oh, fine. And that my throat is white. And that I'm able to consume better than anybody. And that I'm able to consume better than anybody. No, no. Stop. No, no. Stop. Stop. Wait. Please. No, no. Don't do this. I won't do anything. Stop. Thank you. Stop. Stop. Stop. Tuesday, 7.30, there's a great reservoir after. This is an octopus. It's just a slimy fish with no spilling. It should be an agent. Great. That's a great bottom brando, Dougie. Oh, boy. Introducing Simon Gallagher's superb new album, Unforgettable. That's what you are. An album of Simon's favorite songs in the 20s, 30s and 40s. Embrace me. My sweet embrace. Beautifully recorded with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. It's really killing that he's so willing to make it worth it. Simon Gallagher. His new album is simply unforgettable. Are they tin cans or are they nuts? Are they mint sites or are they nuts? As there is no substitute for quality, they've got to be honest. Are they what? Kath Williams, breeder of champion German shorthead pointers, talks about the all-new Pal casserole. There is some good news for dog owners. There is a new Pal casserole. It's got big meaty chunks, completely coated with a lovely gravy, which is vitamin-enriched. As soon as you put it down, they go for it, and they've eaten it up in two minutes. You know, lick, lick, chop, chop, and it's all gone. It looks delicious and it smells delicious, and it's a really hearty meal, and the dogs love it. Top breeders recommend new Pal casserole. I don't know how you do it, how you find the time. You say there's nothing to it, but you do it all the time. And only you ought to be congratulated. There's just one attorney to turn to. I saw it coming. The infallible Ben Matlock. I get so sick of hearing that. Wednesday, 7.30, online. Excuse me. Excuse me. Where may I find Armenia Bianchini? Over there. Hello? Is anyone around? Hello? Well, how are you? Hey, leave my baby alone. Get out. I don't think you understand. I'm the doctor. I received an urgent call to come here. Lend me 100 liras. You wanted to put on a record? Yes. My baby likes to hear the news. I can't examine your child with that in my ears. Tell me, how can I be sure you're the doctor I call? I am Dr. Spaziani, National Health. May I examine your baby? Sure, go ahead. There's no need to. He's got a bump on his head. That's all he felt. Hey, how much longer is that bump on his head going to be there? National Health doctors only make calls on patients when they can't be moved, which obviously is not the case here. If you want me to examine him, bring him to the clinic tomorrow morning, visiting hours from 9 to 12. Hey, where are you going? Why are you leaving? I don't understand. Bring him to the clinic tomorrow early. Then he's really sick. I know. Well, he looks all right. I'm just trying to explain. Oh, tell me the truth, Doctor. If my baby dies, I'll kill myself. Of course he won't die. I don't know what you're talking about. The bump's nothing to be concerned about. At most, it'll take a couple of days to disappear. No, no, it must disappear right away. Do something. Sorry, there's nothing I could possibly do now. Well, go according to the rules then, all right? I'll bring him to the clinic tomorrow. It's good for him to breathe the morning air for a little bit. Doctor? You owe me a hundred lira. Make it two hundred. You stopped the record twice, you know. Oh, I hope it's not going to be long. Oh, Atlantis, come on. Signora, signora, I'd like to go first. She has a lot of shopping. I haven't got. I don't have very much money anyway. Kindness stays all the same. She gave me six hundred lira so she could be the next one in. Signora, if I can go after her, I'll give you the same thing. It's all right with me. I have nothing but time. Signora? I don't mind at all. Signora, will you come in? Excuse me. Come in, Max. Come in here. Tata, place your child on the table. And you can be thankful I'm not calling the police. But, Doctor, what have I done? Oh, really, you know perfectly well. But I don't. You've been here since nine o'clock changing places with those other women. I have a soft heart. You got paid. You're a swimmer. I'd have money if I got the face. I got nothing. I haven't any money to take my poor child home even. Is that so? Take your hands off me. What do you call this then? Oh, come back here. Come here. You broke my hand. You broke my hand. You're crazy. Stop this. Let me go. You're crazy. Get in there and stop the act, you steaming woman. Oh, shit. My hand. You are insane. You ought to be scared. Don't you know I'm a minor? That's too much. You're a minor. That's a joke. I'm going to call the police. I'll arrest them. I'll teach you what happens to young ladies. You've drawn blood. You're disgusting. That's what I think of you. All people, retropora like her, entitles the respect. Because I have nothing. You treat me like dirt in front of this innocent. What are you doing here? Go away. Here, you may take this innocent. Now get out of my sight. Get out and take this child with you. Get out, I said. Out. I bet you'd like me to get out. But how about the fare I have to spend alone to get here? Do your duty. Hmph. Here, take this and go away. Take it to someone else. Dr. Maldoni, Dr. Purgoni, I don't care as long as you get out. Get out. You gave me money because you're scared that I'll report you. A question is on everyone's lips. None of us is going to end up in jail. So who did kill him, you're in. You had a pretty good motive yourself. I had a lot of others. You wanted him dead. Well, I can't help thinking that Chris might have done it. Please don't show my husband that letter. Are you covering up for someone else? Better Health by Dr. John. Just like that, can't you get into your own car without paying for it? Just a minute, will you? I'm not asking for charity, you know. Something is giving them a dip, they act like they're headed coming to them. Can I look at it a minute? Sure, go ahead. Please, let me by, sir. Sorry, signora, please. No, come on now. Yes, wait. I'll let you by, eh? No, no, let me by, my dear. I've been waiting here since day two. I've just got to get this stamped. Let me through. Excuse me. I just have to get this stamped. They've been sending me from one place or another all morning. Let me help you. Excuse me. All I have to do is get this stamped. Just that, stamped. Thank you. Excuse me. All right. Eh, signora, your baby. Ah, I forgot. Miss, thank you. A pleasure. Thank you. Thank you. Hey, watch where you're going. Everybody's in a hurry. It's no good. Here you are. Thank you. My girl, my girl, my girl, I'll be with you. What a ride home? No, thanks. I've deliberately walked to get the access line. I've gained some weight lately. Come on in. I'll give you some bills to help you lose weight. It's easier. It doesn't matter how much weight doctors gain. We have no reason to remain names, wives and prostitutes. They're the only ones who see our stomachs and they don't care. As for the rest, forget it. At the appropriate time, the phone always rings. An urgent call and it's always someone who's dying. What's going on? Would you look at that? Wait. What's going on? Wait here a minute. But that's impossible. You know that. Then go around the block. Hand me two spices. Oh, no. Wait, stop. I knew it. I knew I'd run into you sooner or later. Well, you're very smart. Here I am. Oh, no. Well, is that all you can say? I wish now you'd had me arrested. I'd be taken care of. My husband never thinks of me. What does your husband do? I don't know. We were never married. Ah. I've seen him three times now. He made me pregnant the first time. The second he tried to take the baby away. And the third he... Let's forget about it. But... He's blonde. I could have sworn that your child had brown hair. I dyed it. Dyeed? It won't harm him, will it? Why did you do that? He looked too much like his father. Well it can be good for a child. Well, good night. There's something I want to tell you. Tell me. It was a lie. I wasn't going to call the police at all. I couldn't go through with it. Well, good night. You've been very kind to me. I just wanted to apologize for my behavior. Oh, I have to get baby food for my child. You hold him. I'll be back in a minute. I'll be back in a minute. Don't let him get away. Oh, baby, no, no, no. But I don't understand, Senor. You told me two hours ago that Senor Abianchini came home and went out again. Didn't you give her my message? Huh? But it's after one o'clock. I still haven't heard from her. Where can she be? Huh? Yes, I understand. I'm sorry I woke you up. Goodbye, Senor. Ah, you're such a good child. Now, where's Mama, eh? Tell me. Good night. Don't forget now. Ciao. Oh, Chivu, Chivu, Chivu. Where's my baby? What have you done with him? Everything all right, Doctor? Why shouldn't it be all right? Oh, it's 3.30. Good night. Where is he, you monster? I reported you to the police for kidnapping. You're not going to get away with it. Where is he? I knew the minute I made eye-downs, I knew that I shouldn't have passed you, that you were up for no good. The minute you said bring him to the clinic, I knew you had to be guilty in mind. But now they're going to arrest you. They're going to arrest you and put you behind bars. And I'm not going to lift a finger to help you. Not after what you've done to my poor baby. Where is he? Oh, stop it, Abianch. You knew very well the baby was here. You should have been here hours ago. It was raining and I couldn't get a taxi. Anyway, I wasn't worried. Oh, look, there he is. Oh, my little treasure. Don't worry. You'll miss him. Everything is all right. I admit it. I should have come here right away, all right. But I was thinking of the baby. I thought the doctor would give him a home, a real home. I thought he would be happier with you. But I couldn't give up my baby. Isn't it true you'd be happier with the doctor? Just look at the nice new sleeper he went out and bought for you. Aren't you happy? You know he has a lot of money. I didn't go out and buy it. I had it. A patient left it here. You may take it home if you like. Look at that. He's even changed you. Where did you put his old diaper? Bathroom. It's a nice apartment. I'm sure you don't live in a place like this all alone. I have a cleaning woman. I mean a girl. Don't you have one? Where's the bathroom? Ah, there it is. I'll wash out the diaper. I thought since I'm here I'd take a bath. Real bath tubs are a luxury. Bye. Don't worry. I won't make any noise. And I'll leave everything nice and clean. You'd better go to sleep. You have to get up in the morning. And don't speak through the keyhole. Who's there? I took so long in the bath that now I'm cold. Mind if I warm up a bit? Wednesday night at the movies, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines You're being used. They're trying to kill you. They danced for their freedom. You're a god damn dancer. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Sorry, I can't help you. Ah, doctor, this young lady is most likely to be in a bad mood. On an urgent matter. Excuse me for a moment. What's this all about? I'm going away. I've come to say goodbye. Wait, and I'll get rid of my patient. No, I'm in a hurry. I left my child in your car. I didn't want him to know what went on. What are you talking about? He's only six months old. You weren't there when I got up. He disappeared. I disappeared? What about you? First you jumped into bed with me, and then after you get what you want, you're through. And when you're through with a woman, she doesn't matter, does she? And with a minor yet. You're not a minor, and it was you who jumped into my bed, remember? I only wanted to get warm. Anyway, I didn't come here to blame you. I'm glad that happened, and it made me realize that a decent girl from a good family can't live alone. Alone and unprotected. I've told my brother everything. He's forgiven me. I'm going to go away with him. Please don't cry. Come on, calm down, please, Armenian. Please don't cry, Armenian. Look, I've been thinking a lot about this. I mean, there are things I can do to help you out. What? What are you saying? I don't understand you. Well, I mean, I would like to give you some assistance. In that case, give me some money. A large amount of money right away would solve the whole problem. Give you some money? Give you a large amount? It's impossible. I don't believe it. It was money you came here for. Everything out of you is one big incredible lie. Come on, deny it. Go ahead. Armenian! Take your stupid money and stuff it in your mouth. I'd die before I've got you. My jacket. Your jacket? Yes, my jacket. Help! Help! My baby's not here. He's with Kinnah. Are you positive? Yes, oh help. Impossible. She says her baby's been taken. What's going on? He was in here. Who's Caradis? Why, Max? Oh, but it was over there this morning. Oh, there was another car. Just like yours over there. Now I understand. It was the same man who called her. I remember now when he got here, he said, try to keep the car in front of the hospital entrance. He said he had to get a tooth pulled. Then he was going to Fumacino. He had a plane to catch. Do you know when the man left here to go out there? Ten minutes ago, but I didn't see any baby in the car. The back seat I put in there. He wasn't there, I tell you. He wasn't there. Calm down, calm down. Just be quiet. You must alert the hospital. Telephone all the police stations, the police at the airport. Give this description. He's six months old, has blond hair. Brown hair. Brown hair. But before he had blond hair. All right, it's brown. But the baby had blond hair last night. Now it's brown. But I saw it with my own eyes. I said it's brown now. Doctor, would you mind telephoning the police yourself? No, no, no. We've got to get to the airport. You go ahead and do as I say. Hurry, get in. We've got to catch up with that guy. Quickly, quickly. Sir, we're the people who lost the baby in the car. I don't know anything about it. You can't park there. We've released him already. We notified. Speak to them. Over here. Attention please. A baby was mistakenly placed in the back of a 66 beige PS 500 parked in front of a National Health Hospital. Please believe the owner of the car is in the terminal. The baby has brown hair and he is six months old. Please report to the police at once if you have any information concerning this child. Hey, you down there, police! What are you just standing around there for? You've got to search every car in that parking lot. Come on, come on, get going. Come on, get out and search every car in that lot. Hey, don't you know a child has been lost? Go and look for it. For all you know, he could be dying of suffocation in 30 minutes. Wait! Stop everything! I found my baby! I found him! Everybody wait! Thank me to the Lord for the child's been found! But he's Chinese. Oh, what do I do now? Robert? Robert? Yes? My God! My little boy! What happened? My little boy is gone! Whose child is he? The sleeper looked just like mine. I saw it and grabbed it. We're really in trouble now. We've got to try to bring him back. What's this? What have we got here? And he's six months old. He was found in a car. The description is identical to that of the missing child of Armenia Bianchini, who reported the child taking his place. Let's go back and see the child. No, no, no! We'll put him in a place they can't be! Come on! I'll manage. You go pick up your child. And then, for heaven's sake, get out of here and go home! A fuss about nothing. It was a simple mistake. I'll explain the whole thing. You can't do that! Once you know you could end up in a lot of trouble, you've got to leave right away! Go home! I'll manage everything here. Come on, get out of here! They could put you in jail. Let's hope they won't. Huh? I'll be waiting at home. I'm not going with my brother. You're much too nice. I'm nice. She'll be waiting. She won't be going. Amelia? Hey, hello. She left them behind, huh? This one is mine. A blonde one? My husband and I work all day. It's so difficult with the family. Armenia took my children in the morning till I returned. She treated them like they belonged to her. It's too bad she had to go so suddenly like that, but... She may come back. You never know. I'll be waiting. I'll be waiting. I'll be waiting. She may come back. You never know. You never know. You never know. Who are you? Remember me? Callahan, inspector. For ain't the first. This is one hell of a cop. Pencil pushing son of a bitch. Did your husband leave a check or anything for me? No. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Did he leave a check for me? I called Alberto half an hour ago. He said he felt a bit tired. He thought he'd take a rest. But he would leave me the check so I wouldn't have to disturb him. He must have forgotten. Shall I ask him to get it for you? No, no. It really doesn't matter. I'll wait a bit. Maybe he'll get up soon. Bien. Bien, darling. You kiss Mama, and then we'll go for a little walk. We'll go to that nice park you like, all right? Go on. Give Mama a kiss. Go ahead. Très bien. Aren't you going to say hello to Luigi? No. Hello. Excuse me, Eleanor. Would you happen to know if your maid was in the kitchen? No, I think she's out. Why? Ah. I was hoping she'd make me a bicarbonate. Could I? It will only be a second before I finish my thread. I'll do it. No, I can manage. Don't bother. I'm not helpless. Do you know where it is? Of course I know. Fine. You won't see it there. It used to be here. What happened? I changed it. Let me get it for you. Hold on now. Oh, Luigi, I'm dizzy. Hold on to me. Don't worry. It's dangerous to leave this about with children in the house. And servants are worse than children. Never keep Madison within easy reach. I've told your wife that already. Yes, you're right. You're a perfect wife. I'm so ordinary. You have a lovely wife. But she's not perfect. It's so cold. Yes. The stomachache's completely disappeared. Ah, but I remember last New Year's Eve. You felt sick. Did I? What was it? It was a strange reaction to something called alcohol. I admit I have a peculiar stomach. It's bad for me to drink. Maybe it's your liver. You should never wear anything too tight around your middle, you know. Especially a belt. You see, I don't have one on. Oh, I never wear anything too tight around my middle. I couldn't stand it while I'm doing my embroidery. What is it? Nothing. Why? You have a strange look in your eyes. It's hard. Where's the bottle? What is it, Eleanor? You look so odd. Try to forget it. Oh, I'll try. I'll try. Luigi! Luigi! That's right, but they run away. Senor Luigi, what are you doing? We do have a front door. Just looking at your garden. I just wanted to get some air, really. I was not well. I took some bicarbonate. Good night, senor. Is Alberto awake? I don't know. I came in through the back door myself, so I don't know. Well, I'll be going home now. I'm feeling all right. At least go inside and say hello, or they'll be angry. Can I fix you anything hot? No, no, thanks, no. I'll be going after I see Alberto and Eleanor. Not a hair out of place. Her eyes are calm and tranquil, as if nothing had happened. She looks completely normal. Hello, Luigi. What have you been up to? I just dropped by to see you. Sorry, I didn't remember about the check. Here it is. I'll send the receipt to you. Luigi, come on, don't be ridiculous. You know I don't need one. You're right, naturally. I don't know what got into me. Excuse me, Alberto. I'd better go home. Say goodbye to Eleanor. Eleanor! Luigi's going. He wants to say goodbye. Alberto. Come over here, you naughty boy. So long, Eleanor. Wait, I want to call your wife about something. Hello. Hello, this is Eleanor. Could I speak to Claudia? Oh, in the kitchen. You've all been introduced? No. But we all had to leave last week. Remember, we spent the evening in the conga. Of course. With regards to your husband. My husband? He's been dead for some time now. You look so strange. Are you sick again? No, just a bad stomach. It's nothing. Would you like something else to drink? No, don't bother. Hello, Claudia. This is Eleanor. I've got your husband here with me. Listen, darling. What color thread was that you wanted? The pink, rose, or the powder blue? Ah, that one. All right, I'm sending Luigi home. Bye-bye. Here you are. Thanks. And don't forget, tomorrow night we'll both be over to have dinner together. Ciao. Bye now. Goodbye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Gaetano, where's my wife? In the living room, but I just looked there. Then I don't know. I'm sorry. Not a single hair out of place. Her eyes are calm and tranquil. Her face, the picture of innocence. She looks completely normal. She looks public. Six month old, ice cold. We want interim medical concerns and she's innocent. I'm all over the place exceptional. Here's our morning news. We found the tackiest trick, and she's dead. Tuba stands for the dead. It's a little badge made for you shut up. A seal! Trenton, they're leaving. She brought in 30 bottles of whiskey, 20 of champagne, and all for some sort of benefit or other. What do these people do when they want a good time? The chamomile. Here we go. C'mon, it's chamomile tea. Coming. I'm ready. Where do I bring it? The guest room on the third floor. If there's no answer when you knock, go right in. Thank you. Somebody's drunk. You're my servant. You're my slave. Giovanni. Giovanni, come here. Signora. Here I am, Signora. Where are you? I've been looking for you for the last hour. Such a large place with so many people. I found you a marvelous job. Thank you. Professor, this is Giovanni. I hear you're also a chauffeur. Butler, valet and chauffeur. The Countess has spoken well of you. When would you be free? I can be free any time you want. Good. I have my car here. We can go back to Rome together. About what time tonight? No, not tonight, Giovanni. The professor is staying over tonight at my house. Tell her, Nessa, she'll find a room here for you. Countess, I'm really most grateful to you. Till tomorrow, Professor. What is your monthly salary? 80,000 lira. All right. Thank you, Professor. Countess, thank you again. I'm sure you'll like it. He's really very good. You know, I've been playing 29 all evening and it has no luck. I'm going to try once more if that's all. Oh, wait a minute. I'm waiting for my wife. Excuse me. I thought you were here alone. Lovely. It's a man. Oh, my eyes. I'll call you next week about the gin and pop. Wonderful, darling. Giovanni? Huh? Yes, Patricia. Are you the new chauffeur? Yes, senora. What name do I call you? Giovanni. Well, then, Giovanni, drive slowly. I find 40 miles an hour sensible. You needn't worry. My love, I'm dressing you. Help me. I'm so sorry. I'm sorry. I need to talk to you. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm dressing you. Hold me tight. Hold me tight. Tell me I'm your servant. Yes, yes, tell me I'm your servant. Have you got my lighter? No, I haven't even seen it, darling. I can't understand what happened. We're very close. Perhaps you left it behind at the villa. Where? Why don't I remember? Maybe because you were drinking last night. Did I drink too much? Well, let's say you had a little beyond your limit. Here you are. Goodbye, darling. See you later. Bye. Bye. Goodbye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Julie. This is my clinic I'd like you here around eight o'clock I'll be here. Professor. Well you've on it is anything wrong. I thought you'd like to talk to me in your life about. The new relationships in your life but it's not something that can't wait. All right would you like me to take. Yeah Tom takes to add not. Site where. Good morning, Signora. Good morning, Carmen. I would love some black gaffer rose. Right away. Giovanni, take the suitcase and come inside. We've a lot to talk about. So you're the new chauffeur, are you? Yes, the professor hired me last night. He's stingy about money. You'd better just hold out for what you want. I'm ready, Signora. I'm completely at your disposal. Ah, Giovanni, sit down. Would you? Thank you. Sit there, please. Of course. Giovanni, it's my practice to make everything clear from the beginning. This way I avoid any occasion for misunderstanding. Good, Signora. I too prefer that. Aside from Carmela who runs the house, I employ a part-time domestic for the laundry and help with the cleaning and the gardener. You will do the heavy cleaning and serve at the table. As chauffeur, from nine to five, you're at my disposal completely. You will, of course, drive my husband to the clinic. Now, what are your requirements? I think you know. What salary do you ask? Eighty thousand a month. It's completely out of the question. Shall we say seventy thousand liras? Your husband already agreed to eighty thousand liras. My husband doesn't bother about things like this. I make the decisions. Well? No, I can't argue with you. You win. Splendid. Then we're both in a court. Signora. Yes? If you don't want me to stay, if I embarrass you, I'll be happy to go now. What are you talking about? I know now you're married to the professor, but I didn't know when he hired me. Signora, maybe this isn't right. But I don't understand. We reached an agreement. You just do your job, and I'm sure we'll get along very well. And your husband? Don't worry about my husband. He doesn't interfere with my affairs. Carmela, take Giovanni to his room, show him about the house, and tell him what he needs to do. Let's go, Giovanni. Go ahead, you're excused. You're quite sure. I've got plenty of work to do. Come on. So you had trouble. Trouble? Didn't she lower your pay? Yes, how did you know? Well, she does that to everyone. What do they like to work for? He's a surgeon, very well known. He's kind and very gentle. And her? She's not generous, as you know, but she's a lady and very honest. Well, over there is the professor's room. And opposite his room is her room. Oh, they sleep separately? Yes, they sleep separately. Why, don't they get along? Yes, they get along, but they have separate bedrooms. Now, up here there are two nice rooms where we sleep. Separately or together? Oh, don't say things like that. You scare me. I'll be up all night now. I'll try and control myself, but it'll be hard. I'm giving you this as a present. Keep it as a souvenir of tonight. Oh, my love, untress me. Love me. Hurt me. Tell me I'm used to it. Tell me, my love. Hello? No, signor, I was wide awake. You want me there? No. No, no, really. Yes, I'll be there in a minute. I knew it. I knew it. I'm ready, my love. Here I am, signora. Yes, signora. Oh, Giovanni, Cupid has wettened the carpet. Is that right? Will you clean it up before it stains? Yes, signora. Oh, my dear, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You were going to make me so sad. I was keeping all my money in the house. I was keeping everything. You didn't have to. I didn't have to. You did, signora. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. No. No. Oh, damn! Joe, Bernie! Good morning, Signora. What are you doing here? Are you crazy? I brought you coffee. We'll never do it again. Leave it to Carmela. In other households, I always brought it, Signora. Well, it's certainly not going to be a habit in this house. Understand? I'm sorry, Signora. Forgive me. Please go outside and call Carmela. You want sugar? I am not a cripple. I'm able to put in the sugar. Just go. Go away. Yes, Signora. Leave that alone! Don't touch those things, please! The conference doesn't start until Thursday. So I thought instead of going by plane, perhaps I'd have Giovanni drive me to Geneva. But, darling, that's a ridiculous idea. I'm certainly not going to stay in Rome all by myself without Giovanni. Besides, it's a terribly long trip by car to Geneva. He may take anybody else away, but not my chauffeur. If you wanted to take Carmela, I could put up with it. You wouldn't want me to attend a meeting like this while with a cook. Why, no, I didn't mean that. But you must admit it's preposterous for you to take away Giovanni just when you're going to be away a long time. Giovanni? Yes, Signora? Could I have a light, please? Thank you. He's gone. Goodbye, Giovanni. Are you going somewhere? The house is simple. I'll run with Professor Gahn so I'm going away. I'll go see my sister, Emila, and she's in the hospital there. The poor soul is not doing well. Ah, you're on a pod. Were you listening? Yes, yes, yes, I heard you. Soon, my darling. Cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha. My darling. Cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha. My beauty. Cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha. Would you like some more dessert? No more. Would you like some more wine? No, thank you, no more. Whiskey, Signora? Yes, if you please. You may pour a little for me. Thank you, Signora. Signora. Thank you, Giovanni. Signora. It's my lighter. Yes, Signora. Where did you find it? You gave me the lighter. What? I couldn't have. The first time we met, you gave me the lighter. But did that gone be true? True, nonetheless. It's a souvenir, Signora. Why, you're out of your mind. Please, Signora, why do you insist on denying it? You recall at the villa, when I brought you the chamomile tea? What chamomile tea? The chamomile tea. I entered and there you were. You were almost naked. You pleaded to me. You begged me to undress you and then you... That's enough. Were the story true, you should have enough discretion not to mention it. And it isn't true. I assure you, it is, Signora. Please, me. Look here, Giovanni. If you want this position, do not repeat such obscenities again. Very well, Signora. I was wrong about you. I thought... The telephone. Yes, hello? Who's speaking, Signora? It's Signor Giorgio. I'll tell him you're not here. You'll tell him nothing of the sort. Why should I be in? Give me that. Hello? Yes, Giorgio, it's been a while. Geneva, the meeting. You'd all like to come here? I think that's a marvelous idea. But not too late. I'll be there. I'll be there. I'll be there. I'll be there. I'll be there. I'll be there. I'll be there. I'll be there. I'll be there. Morning, Doctor. It seems a pretty comprehensive report, Dr. Delaney. Would you like me to give you the guts of it? The old man Erskine, the fittest specimen I've ever seen. Tough as teak. Good. When can we have him operational again? He's my best operator. Was. Unless you can use a spy in a wheelchair. Completely useless. Well, he's recovered from the physical trauma, as far as flesh mending is concerned. But never once in the eight weeks he's been in the hospital have I seen the slightest sign of him being able to walk. Do we have the neurologist's report? Bullet fragmented on impact. Unfortunately, some of the fragments have messed up his spinal cord. There's nothing more surgery can do for him. Theoretically, he should be cured. But the fact remains he can't walk. I'm afraid you'll have to write him off. Put him on the smallest pension you can and get rid of it. No, no, he's too valuable to me. Well, I tell you I'll be glad to see the last of him at the hospital. Making trouble, is he? In a manner of speaking. Well, he was always somewhat independent. I take it he's trying to run the place. Not exactly. You see, it's the nurses. While his legs can't walk, his hands have been doing overtime, if you know what I mean. Yes, quite. Well on the way to recovery, eh? I have a beach house at Palm Beach. I'd suggest that we try him there for a period of convalescence. I don't think that'll do any good. And there's a shortage of nurses. We'll arrange for the nurse. All right. I can have an ambulance ready to move him in the morning. That won't be necessary. I'd prefer to move him in an unmarked vehicle. He has knowledge, intimate knowledge, of the workings of this department. It would be rather embarrassing if the other side got hold of him. Erskine knows all the allied radio codes for the Pacific area. Hence your concern for Erskine's recovery. Shall we say ten o'clock at the hospital? Ten o'clock. In the morning. Morning, Doctor. What are you going to do with him? Who? Delaney? You know who I mean. Erskine. You've seen our budget, Lieutenant. We can't afford to carry any dead wood. But he served us for months. We can't just walk away from him. He can't just walk away from us is more to the point. Can you arrange a nurse for him? Well, as it happens, I have five days accumulated leave. And I have five weeks accumulated work to do. Find a nurse. Right. She's to go to the house of Mortimer Lama at Palm Beach. The address is in the phone book. Mortimer Lama, sir? Very well known in leper doctory circles. In what? He's a butterfly collector, Lieutenant. Isn't Erskine going to your home in Palm Beach, sir? I'm rather proud of these ones. Well, I can't say we're sorry to see you leave, Mr. Erskine. Don't be like that, love. Oh! Oh! Thank you, nurse. Goodbye. Goodbye. We've got a tail! Well, try to outrun them! They're mad. They're mad. You've been keeping the wrong sort of company, have you, love? It's not me they want. I'm not holding allied codes in my head. Take good care of me, Nazi. Dr. Blass! I read that medical report last night. As a layman, I interpret the report to mean there's nothing wrong with Erskine. That's right. As far as I'm concerned, his condition is purely psychosomatic. He can't walk because he believes he can't walk. It's a sort of reverse of Descartes' philosophy of life. I think, therefore I am. That's right. But in Erskine's case, he believes he cannot, therefore he cannot. Any care for it? Time? I don't have time. Look, I'd like to bring words of cheer, but yours is a practical enterprise. So? Forget him. Train yourself a new dog. Well, that's only half the problem. The other side tried to get him on his way to the Beach House. His information is valuable to them. How would he be for light duties? All right, I suppose. Why? The house at Palm Beach. It's a cover for allied intelligence. I have to meet the chief sub-staff of British and American intelligence there next week. That's hardly comfortable. I'll see you there. What's highly confidential? Precisely. Do you suppose Erskine is capable of keeping an eye on the place, reporting anything out of the ordinary? I suppose so. You'd have to watch him. Men in this situation sometimes make extravagant claims in order to draw attention to themselves. I'd better go down and see him. Paperwork, you know? Look through these papers, and the next day or two, they mark your signature. Your discharge is there. Honorable, of course. On medical grounds. There's an application for me to sign for a small pension. You'll see I've recommended you for decoration. What a bloody birthday cake. I'm only trying to help, old boy. Oh, make them work. I knew it myself. What's going on here? Are you teaching me to say I'm a... You must stay on here for a few weeks. I'll keep you on. On half pay, of course. It's about the right price for half a man. I am. Stephen King. Do you know what a graveyard really is? Author of the Oscar-winning Misery. The place where the dead speak. Has anyone ever buried a person up there? But lock your doors. Daddy's gonna do something really bad. 8.30 tonight on 9. Stephen King's Pempt Cemetery. Hello, Jake. Hello, Jake. Oh, you're dead. One day, Jake. Good luck, mate. Bye, Dad. Go on off you go. Plan to protect your family's future with A&P. It will always be there. Medicine? Taste. That's all right. Where'd you get that? Black market. I found it in the cupboard. They look nice. Can I have one? On duty. You don't have to behave like a Sergeant Major. It's only Kato's grog. I've had more gallant offers. Hey. About Kato, what do you reckon? What about? Two blokes that took a shot at us. I don't know. Lieutenant French said something about you being useful to the enemy. The things you know. Yeah, that'll be right. Said they're half pay. Said the private nurse. Wonder what it... I want to go out. All right, I'll take you out to the... No, no, no. It's a nice seat. I just want to go down the road. I can do it by myself. Now, I'm not a patient here. I'm a prisoner, right? I'm an embarrassment to Kato. That's why you're here. Poor old Kato. If only those japs hadn't done a better job. There's one thing Kato can't stand, it's loose ends. I'll get dinner. You do look nice. Got nice legs. Very nice legs. Yeah, very nice legs indeed, indeed. Help yourself, my dear. Thank you, sir. Now, that's the last of the potted shrimp. You wouldn't like it. Bad news? Company commander's reports and recommendations for intelligence operatives to replace her skin. I see. Get these back to the respective company commanders. None of the suggestions is suitable. Did you have any luck with the gangsters who took a shot at you? When I sent a provo there, the men had gone and the car vanished. Good, so they don't know where the house is? No. Fine. Took a long time to establish that cover. How old are you? About 40 years early this season. Oh, if I was a young fellow, I'd show you a thing or two. You're in better spirits anyway. Stop. Better spirits are in me. Come on, how much of that have you had? Not enough. Milk, I should. I wish I had a flashlight. Sorry? Flashlight. When I was a kid, we used to paddle up on the edge of the water with a flashlight after prongs. Were you good at it? No. That's not what counted, really. It was paddling at night, and even a piece of seaweed was a shark. Funny the way kids can't have any fun without being scared. It's no fun if you're not a little frightened. Are you frightened? Of me? No. You're a long time dead. I'll take the chance. It's your bedtime. Could have told you that. I thought you did. I'm James. Look, let's just forget about the bath, eh? I can do it myself in the morning. I wouldn't want to put you to any trouble. I'm a nurse, Mr. Oskar, not a chorus girl. Back in ten minutes. I'll be right back. The question is on everyone's lips. Which one of us is going to end up in jail? Chances. So who did kill any of your adults? Everyone fantasised about doing it. You had a pretty good mode of yourself. There ain't a lot of others. Some wished they had done it. You wanted him dead. Others will point the finger. Well, I can't help thinking that Chris might have done it. Will Barbara pay the ultimate price? You're not at all sorry. There's just one thing. The spirit may be willing, but the flesh is weak. You are incapacitated, you know. From the waist down. Thanks. Thanks a lot. You're welcome. Is he just gonna wake up? I'm not too early. He's having breakfast outside on the veranda. Oh, is it all right if I go? Of course. Come down. You all right? Taking the morning air like a gentleman, huh? Sit here. Sit here. Yeah, I will. Got some toast? No, John. She knows I'm here. I had some in the kitchen. Yeah. You want to have some more? There's plenty more where that came from. You're Gunder, right? Gunder. What happened to Adolf? Oh, you know. You look fine. Everything all right? Yeah, yeah. Right, right. There's a fiddle. Might tell yourself an injury. You two go down, I'll just, uh, sit up here and wheel you. Well, I shouldn't really leave you here. I'll be a wannabe like you. I'll be a wannabe like you. Where is it? Council. Honorary, Jemada. Where is it? What do you want? Easy, mate. I don't want to read your altruistic, Bader. You got any identification? No. Fair enough. I want to know where the meter box is. I wouldn't have a clue. Why don't we have a look around the back? That's where it was next door. That'd be a lot. I'll be right back. I'll be right back. I'll be right back. Hey, don't be stupid. You don't get rid of me that easy. Good. How many do you need out there? Just two blokes. Came to read the meter. I went down under the house. The meter box is on the sidewall near the front. Well, I went down. To the laundry, I think. It's locked. Where's the key? I don't know. Didn't you give it to them? Of course I didn't. I don't even know where it's kept. Are you sure they went down to the laundry? Of course I am. And they were from the council? Right. Now you're using a phone and went dead just before they got here. Bring a council? What was this? When they got here, it was dead. Thank you. No one from the council checked the meter. I said that. Right. That must have been after me. Probably the same two blokes that followed us from the hospital. You were on your own? If they're after you, why didn't they succeed? I had this, didn't I? You opened the door to them with that in your hand? They were stuck, that's all. You believe me, don't you? Frankly, no. I'm sorry, Colonel. It's a typical case. He's taking full advantage of the fact that he was alone in that house to dramatize his own importance. That's not like Erskine. You were with him most of the day. Would you call his behavior normal? That makes it difficult for tonight. Tonight? The security meeting I was telling you about, the one I wanted Erskine as guard for. That's next week, surely? I brought it forward. The Russian-American chiefs of intelligence at the beach house at 3 a.m. tomorrow. I see. And Erskine? I'll have to move him out. You'd better come with me. Something wrong? No. Oh, I have a few rounds to do at the hospital. You can tell her from the hospital, get somebody else to do rounds for you. Yes, you're right. I'll go and use the other office. Tenny, outside lotto. Stick close to the wall. Good evening, madame. Did that old tell you about the two visitors we had here today? He did. Nurse, get Dr. Drigg, will you? There should be some quite good whiskey in there. If Erskine hasn't drunk at all. Irish? Scots, I'm afraid. Well, goodbye. Quite rare, really. Yeah, all right. What's going on? We checked with the council. I know. And the telephone people. There was no interruption to the service at this land. Look, I ought to know. I was the one that used the phone, right? Yes. So you were. Are you trying to tell me I'm wild or something? You're trying to tell me I've made it all up? Let's not jump to conclusions, Erskine. The fact is that I have a vital intelligence meeting in this house in seven hours' time. I'd hope that you would act as a security guard. The first step on the way to your recovery. Sir? What do you think I've been doing? Now, if those two blokes that came here today, they could have known about the meeting. They could have planted a microphone, anything. The only two people who knew about that meeting were the two officers involved and myself, and of course Delaney. Of course. Irish, isn't it? Right? You know as well as I do, mate, that there are Irish in supposedly neutral Ireland that are supplying you boats right on the doorstep of Britain. It has happened, but Delaney has a flawless security record. There are far more Irishmen on our side than there are against us. Look at only need to one, one pro-Nazi waiting to get all the heads of intelligence in one hit. Now let's see what your good doctor friend has to say about that. It's out of rubbish, of course, and unfortunately it's a pretty common manifestation of his symptoms. If the case were in slightly different circumstances, Erskine might well be accusing me of running off with his wife. I've seen it happen, Colonel. I must say the concept of me being an Irish Nazi shows a certain flamboyant imagination. But surely the Army and your department have my records. I'll arrange a transfer Erskine to your other hospital tomorrow morning. Better make it tonight. He could cause an embarrassment at your meeting. I'll have a couple of provos along leg and hand if I need arises. The two men never even existed. I'll arrange transport for him at nine in the morning. I prefer you didn't tell Erskine until then. What about the meeting? Well, we'll let ourselves in. We don't want to be disturbed. Good night, Betty. Sure you can handle him. Are you me, with an Villa on the Quick? egy. Hey! A fifth. He jumps. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
