They were all shot in the head and they were bleeding through their heads It's unbelievable, they were all wounded, all traumatised These are the stories of state sponsored murder in the old South Africa So you were assassinated during the week and went to church on Sunday That's correct I thought the story on South Africa was very well presented And the man who was interviewed was a lying hypocritical son of a bitch He says I'm sorry the same way you would say it's a nice day I failed to understand how a man who was a self-professed Christian can kill from Monday to Saturday and worship God on Sunday I hope he rocks in hell Well in the time since our story went to air the confessed killer Dirk Kutseer has been formally arrested for murder and released on bail And our last program also featured the Australian women's basketball team, the Opals in their quest for a medal in Atlanta Robin Ma, Opals team captain, 19 years representing her country And the driving force behind the most dynamic and successful senior basketball team we've ever produced Well Ma's left alone here Yes, a bank shot from Robin Ma Opals, Opals, Opals Well just in case you haven't heard the hard work paid off with a bronze medal A first for Australian basketball And here comes the Opals onto the floor The first ever Olympic basketball medal for Australia is happening right here We do look forward to your input into witness and we'll be back next Tuesday at 9.30 I hope you can join us then Thanks for watching Don't forget, the team at witness values your comments You can phone the free call number 1-800-247777 Or you can write, fax or email You've just witnessed Australia's premier public affairs show Proudly brought to you by Holden 7 Nightly News with David Johnston Proudly brought to you by National Australia Bank, tailoring banking to your needs 7 Nightly News with David Johnston Police sift for evidence in the murder of a young backpacker Australian athletes head home as heroes And a painkiller warning for asthmatics Good evening, detectives are tonight combing a forest in New South Wales Searching for clues that may link convicted murderer Ivan Malat to the death of another young backpacker On the day Malat lodged an appeal against his conviction Police sealed off an area in the Janolan State Forest near Oberon Where the body of an 18 year old was found 8 years ago The backpacker murder task force has reopened the files on the death of 18 year old Peter Letcher His body was found by picnickers in the Janolan State Forest in January 1988 He'd suffered head wounds Mr Letcher disappeared 2 months earlier while travelling from Busby in Sydney's west to Bathurst The question now, was Mr Letcher one of Ivan Malat's victims? Officers from the state major incident group and Bathurst police are searching the forest for forensic material They're looking for evidence which may be similar to the ammunition or other items found in the Belangolo State Forest Where 7 young hitchhikers were murdered by Malat The Janolan State Forest will be searched for the next 3 days Police have sealed off an area and will keep it under guard And near Dubbo there's been another major development in the backpacker case Police from task force air have launched a raid on a farmhouse Searching for the skull of murdered German tourist, Anya said there wasn't enough evidence Police said sedatives were found in his body but that evidence was ruled inadmissible Mr Justice Smith said he couldn't take into account Judith Sengers' remorse attempting to prevent the money from falling into Judith Sengers' hands Judith Sengers will appeal her conviction and the 10 year jail sentence with a 6 year minimum Kate Davies, 7 Nightly News There are fresh allegations of corruption inside the Australian Federal Police tonight Following the government's decision to hold an independent inquiry Ray Cooper, formerly second in charge of the internal investigation branch has gone public to back claims of corruption and says he's also prepared to name senior colleagues Now retired, this former Australian Federal Police officer Ray Cooper is the latest to go public with damning allegations of corruption inside the nation's premier police operation In my view, seven years ago it wasn't if the inquiry would occur, it was when He was one second in charge of the AFP's internal investigation division where he alleges his inquiries into corrupt behaviour were sabotaged There's very senior police officers, I'm not going to quote what ranks but there are very, very senior police officers involved Mr Cooper says there are hot spots of corruption He alleges drugs and money regularly went missing and that the place leaked like a sieve I'm not going to tell the truth about what I consider to be a cover up from the internal investigation division's aspect some years ago However, another whistleblower, Alan Tasiak, has revealed he fears for his life and has criticised the federal government for not offering him protection Well I have been offered no protection whatsoever, I've really put everything on the line to go public The decision to hold an independent inquiry was based in part on the Tasiak allegations From the British Airways, Amber, Helen McCabe, Seven Nightly News And federal police are investigating British Airways staff after 15kg of amphetamines were found on board a flight from London The drugs were found by a baggage handler in a restricted area It's one of WA's biggest amphetamine hauls 15kg of the drug, $5 million worth, arrived hidden in a locker in a British Airways jumbo jet on Saturday The drugs were found in a sports bag stashed in a holding compartment in the tail section of the plane An area only accessible to flight crew, it had no baggage tags or identification Our preliminary drug tests indicated that amphetamines were probably involved And in accordance with our normal practices, we handed the bag over to the Australian Federal Police Federal Police refuse to give details about the amphetamine haul, they won't even show the drugs to us They say it's part of an ongoing investigation which is not for public knowledge British Airways Flight 11 flies to Perth via Singapore every day It's not known whether the drugs were put there by a crew member And how many successful drug runs have already been made, nobody knows The fire and descent shockwaves throughout British Airways, the package could just as easily have been a bomb The airline will say only that it's investigating Joanna Rouse, Seven Nightly News Most of Australia's record-breaking Olympic team flew out of Atlanta today But not without problems, the city's airport was under siege and struggled to cope with the exodus A fierce electrical storm swept over Atlanta as the Australian team prepared to leave the Olympic city They were forced to cool their heels after a lightning strike blacked out the runway lights and closed the airport It feels quite normal, get quite used to it, I mean we were delayed coming here, we were delayed leaving for Barcelona It's almost to be expected but I think we're bad luck It piled chaos on top of chaos at Atlanta Airport as a quarter of a million athletes and spectators left town After a two hour delay for the Aussies, they were on board their two charter aircraft and dying to get home It feels great, I'm really excited, been away for about five weeks How do you feel going home? Good, no, cannot wait, can't wait, can't wait I'm pretty much still on a high but I'm sure it'll hit me sooner or later The Prime Minister will lead a special welcome home for our athletes when they arrive in Sydney tomorrow morning The great exodus has already left Atlanta looking like a ghost town At Centennial Olympic Park where hundreds of thousands had congregated each day, the only activity was the pack-up That in itself is an awesome task, after two million visitors, 10,000 athletes and 15,000 media people Atlanta was hurting today after the closing ceremony when one Antonio Semaranch admitted to declare them the best games ever Something he always does at the end of each Olympic We did it our way and I feel as good about our games as Barcelona did about theirs And as Seoul did about theirs and as Los Angeles did about theirs And as Sydney will feel about theirs Sydney now feels the weight of the world on its shoulders Our great country proved themselves many, many times to meet all challenges and we can do it again The advice is now flowing freely from the people who've had the weight of the world lifted from their shoulders Prepare early, start immediately, what seems like an eternity will turn into 10 days, almost in the blink of an eye Lee Hatcher, Atlanta, 7NineFee News And there's widespread controversy tonight over Sydney's first step onto the Olympic stage With our performance at the closing ceremony in Atlanta, prompting anger and delight Back home, criticism of the blow-up kangaroos has been dismissed as cultural cringe And the word from Atlanta is that the rest of the world loved it Kangaroos, cockatoos and cultural cringe all on show as Sydney stepped onto the world stage It took just seven minutes for our performers to win high praise from around the world The ISC members, I was sitting with them during the thing and afterwards they loved it A lot of Americans have stopped us along the way and said how terrific it was But back home it sparked a flood of angry calls to talk back radio But how dare they portray us as a bunch of damn hicks I've never been so embarrassed The man behind the performance, Rick Burch, touched the hearts of many with Matilda at Brisbane's Commonwealth Games But his Atlanta ceremony certainly didn't have the same effect Tell you what it shouldn't be, that's kangaroos riding cyclists And it seems cockatoos and kangaroos are out come the year 2000 I think we can aim a bit higher and go further up the food chain when it comes to the symbols If they're not laughing at it then they've definitely lost their sense of humour I mean Australia's kangaroo is probably the most instantly recognised image The controversy over the closing ceremony highlights the dilemma for our Games officials Just how should we be seen by the rest of the world? At least there's now four years to find the answer John Bores, Seven Nightly News Our Atlanta Olympians will fly home tomorrow morning for a private welcoming at Sydney Airport Only family members and friends will be allowed to attend the ceremony addressed by Prime Minister Howard But Channel 7 will be there and we'll cross live during 11am tomorrow morning Commonly used painkillers could pose a potential deadly threat to asthma sufferers The National Asthma Campaign says popular aspirin related drugs can induce severe breathing problems Non-steroidal painkillers are used to treat arthritis, backache, period pain, migraine and sports injuries Marathon swimmer Susie Moroney knows the meaning of pain But as an asthmatic she doesn't rely on these particular drugs to relieve it The cubit of Florida swim, I went through a lot of pain, that was the hardest swim I've ever done 10% of asthmatics are allergic to non-steroidal painkillers And since many recently became available over the counter, doctors are worried The reaction can be extremely severe, it can be life threatening I have certainly had a patient who has had a respiratory arrest, has stopped breathing Doctors stopped prescribing these painkillers for asthmatics years ago But new ones are still being developed The National Asthma Campaign wants prominent warning labels on all non-steroidal painkillers As well as counselling by a doctor or pharmacist before you buy The warning applies to many popular drugs including Voltaren, Brufen, Ponstan, Naprogesic and Indicid As well as Aspro, Codril and Vegeanin Maxine Gray, Seven Nightly News In the news ahead, an ethical dilemma in Britain as a woman chooses to abort a twin And Census 96, Australia's night to stand up and be counted Music Any other way just doesn't taste the same That's the way I'm protecting it, playing real feet Like you're barbecuing it Only Jack Starr's a dog I've been up to Cunninghams Warehouse, Cunninghams Warehouse yesterday Hackeyes, 3 hour 50 minute videotapes, now a super low 2.99, yes 3 hour 50 minutes 2.99 Vogue AMFM Clock Radio, 12 month warranty and awesome 12.99 Brick Column Games, Big Quick, 9.99 each Jack Hard Rugs, 21 by 34 inches, bargain 9.99, pack of 3 wooden coat hangers, a bargain at 2 dollars a pack And cassettes, huge range of rock, pop, country and classical, 3 for 5 dollars Cunninghams Warehouse yesterday Music Extra Strength Dispry for today's extra headaches If you can't get to a bank Get to a post office Now you can do your banking at over 2,500 post offices displaying the gyro post symbol Why should you see Frank Agostino about the exciting new Mitsubishi Magna? We want home! The farmers are angry at State Government plans to reduce their water allocation and give more to the nearby Macquarie Marshes They invaded the hall and disrupted the meeting You ever seen a little pie in there? It's a great pie and coffee! And that forced the Premier to escape through a side door European nations are discussing countermeasures against tough new US anti-terrorism legislation They've accused Washington of jeopardising their foreign trade interests after President Bill Clinton announced a crackdown on ties with Libya and Iran President Clinton put the White House spotlight on terrorism proposing new legislation to fight the threat abroad and signing into law a bill that will punish international companies that invest in Iran and Libya Both countries, the US contends, sponsors terrorist activities America will not rest in our resolve to hunt down, prosecute and punish terrorists and to put pressure on states that support them The families of the victims of Pan Am Flight 103 stood alongside Mr. Clinton They've long pushed for legislation to punish Libya, implicated in the downing The law will penalise international companies which develop more than $40 million worth of new business with Iran or Libya's oil industries US allies abroad have considerable investment in the region and are angry But in a major address on terrorism, Mr. Clinton said he has little choice You cannot do business with countries that practice commerce with you by day while funding or protecting the terrorists who kill you and your innocent civilians by night British anti-abortion activists are offering a mother up to $90,000 to cancel plans to abort a healthy twin A 28-year-old single woman has horrified pro-life groups with her decision to terminate one of her fetuses There's been no reaction to the cash offer at Queen Charlotte's Hospital in West London where the woman is due to have her abortion The woman already has one child and has said she'd rather have a double abortion than struggle to bring up two more The operation is due to be carried out by Professor Philip Bennett who said it was better to terminate one pregnancy than to lose both of them The British Medical Association said the case did not raise any new ethical issues In fact, when you start to analyse the case, there's no difference between this and a termination of pregnancy where there is only one baby being terminated and only a singleton pregnancy Carol Holmes from Suffolk is a single parent bringing up nine-month-old twin boys She says it's a struggle financially and emotionally, but is horrified at the idea of selective abortion I can't understand why anybody would want to even start to think about making a choice The anti-abortion group Life said it hoped the unnamed woman would think again We're very worried about the mother's relationship with the surviving child It's thought there were about a hundred selective terminations of multiple pregnancies performed at UK hospitals last year, usually because of foetal abnormalities Hiroshima has marked the 51st anniversary of the world's first atomic bomb blast More than 50,000 residents of the city and survivors commemorated the exact moment the bomb exploded on August 6, 1945 With prayers for the victims at a moving ceremony, the mayor of Hiroshima dedicated a new list of 5,030 names of those who've died from the after-effects of the blast 140,000 people babies born today From the inner city to the outback Even the ocean is no barrier for census collectors And with 95% of Australians expected to return their forms, privacy doesn't appear to be a stumbling block either We are very keen to make sure we don't ask questions which are considered by people to be too intrusive And after a review, the Bureau of Statistics will count gay and lesbian couples in this year's census for the first time And while Australians were lashed back in 1911 for failing to take part today there's court action for those who avoid the country's biggest people Gentlemen, my government has informed me that the Klingons are expected to move against your planet With the objective of making it a base of operation against the Federation My mission, frankly, is to keep them from doing it What you're saying, Captain, is that we seem to have a choice between dealing with you or your enemies No, sir With the Federation you have a choice You have none with the Klingons The Klingons are a military dictatorship War is their way of life Life under the Klingon rule would be very unpleasant We offer you protection We thank you for your altruistic offer, Captain But we really do not need your protection We are a simple people, Captain We have nothing that anybody could want We have this planet and its strategic location I assure you that you don't take action to prevent it The Klingons will move against you just as surely as you would against the Federation The Klingons will move against you just as surely as your sun rises We will help you build defenses, build facilities We have no defenses, Captain, nor are any needed Gentlemen, I have seen what the Klingons do to planets like yours They are organized into vast slave labor camps No freedoms whatsoever, your goods will be confiscated Passengers taken and killed, your leaders confined You'll be far better off on a penal flight, infinitely better off Captain, we see that your concern is genuine, and we are moved But again we assure you that we are in absolutely no danger Anybody is in danger, you are And that concerns us greatly It would be better if you returned to your ship as soon as possible You keep insisting that there's no danger I keep assuring you that there is, would you mind telling me? It is our way of life, Captain That's the first thing that would be lost Excuse me, gentlemen I'm a soldier, not a diplomat I can only tell you the truth If you will excuse us, Captain, we will discuss your kind offer Yes, certainly Captain, our information on these people and their culture is not correct This is not a primitive society making progress toward mechanization They are totally stagnant There is no evidence of any progress as far back as my tricorder can register That doesn't seem likely Nevertheless, it is true For tens of thousands of years there has been absolutely no advancement No significant change in their physical environment This is a laboratory specimen of an arrested culture Thank you, Mr. Sparke That might be useful We have discussed your offer, Captain, and our opinion is unchanged We are in no danger We thank you for your kind offer of assistance, although we must decline it And we strongly recommend that you leave Organia before you yourselves are endangered Gentlemen, I must get you to reconsider We can be of immense help to you In addition to military aid, we can send you specialists, technicians We can show you how to feed a thousand people where one was fed before We can help you build schools, educate the young in the latest technological and scientific skills Your public facilities are almost non-existent We can help you remake your world End disease, hunger, hardship All we ask in return is that you let us help you Now Captain, I can see that you do not understand us Perhaps Excuse me, sir Kirk it Captain, a large number of Klingon vessels have just arrived They're opening fire Positive identification Yes, sir My screens are up. There is no danger They have all eight space vehicles assumed orbit around our planet They are activating their material transmission units Thank you, Sir Fannie Can you verify that? Negative, Captain, but it seems a logical development Captain, since it is too late for you to escape Perhaps we should do something about protecting you If you had listened to me, we must be sure that you are not harmed Airborne, several hundred men have appeared near the citadel They bring many weapons How does he know that? Oh, our friend Trephane is really quite intuitive You can rest assured that what he says is absolutely correct So We're stranded here In the middle of a Klingon occupation, Army So it would seem Not a very pleasant prospect You have a gift for understatement, Mr. Spock It's not a very pleasant prospect at all On Seven's Comedy Thursday, everyone's talking babies Wow! Mr. Spock presents a problem He does not look like an Organian A Vulcan trader, perhaps A dealer in Kivas and Trillium Harmless to the Klingons They know that Vulcan is a member of the Federation Vulcan merchants are not uncommon, Captain It is a practical approach What about the rest of you? We should continue as before We have nothing to fear You have a lot to learn, sir And if I know the Klingons You will learn it in the hard way This is the ruling council I am Eobor, temporarily head of the council I welcome you No doubt you do I am Kur, military governor of Organia Who are you? You are here, there is nothing I can do about it Good, honest hatred Very refreshing However, it makes no difference whether you welcome me or not I am here and I will stay You are now subjects of the Klingon Empire You will find there are many rules and regulations They will be posted Violation of the smallest of them Will be punished by death We shall obey your regulations, Commander You disapprove, Baroner You need my approval I need your obedience Nothing more Will I have it? You seem to be in command Yes I am I shall need a representative from among you Liaison between the forces of the occupation and the civil population Smile and smile I don't trust men who smile too much You, Baroner, you are the man Me? I don't want the job Have I asked whether or not you want it? We Klingons have a reputation for ruthlessness You will find that it is deserved Should one Klingon soldier be killed A thousand Organians will die I will have order Is that clear? Commander, I assure you Our people want nothing but peace We shall cause you no trouble I am sure you will not Take the Vulcan to the examination room You come with me I will familiarize you with your new duties What about Mr. Spock? You are concerned He is my friend You have a poor choice of friends He will be examined If he is lying, he will die If he is telling the truth He will find that business has taken a turn for the worse You do not like to be pushed Very good You may be a man I can deal with, Baroner Come with me Tomorrow night at 6 On Today Tonight, the house that Jack built Every time I look at it, I feel sick Just devastated We catch up with SA's shonky builder Plus the miracle babies Natural therapy succeeds where science fails 6.30 tomorrow night I just accepted that my pad would scrunch up when I moved around Which meant I never felt properly protected But Whisper's great new double ply protection changed all that The new dry weave top sheet is bonded to the core So even when the pad gets bunched up It goes back into shape and continues to absorb Keeping me dry I feel more protected than ever New Whisper with double ply protection It's cleaner, it's drier, and now protects even better These people can sell you a reverse cycle air conditioner These give after sales service But only a few have the new advanced Mitsubishi electric Denki range Denki?
