Appearing on the show, Randy Butler, Terry Butler, Brian Dirksen, Andy Park, Cindy Rethmeyer, David Roos, and Carl Tuttle. Here's your host, John Wimber. Welcome to Winds of Worship. We've been reviewing songs here, and I know that what you're about to hear will be a delight to you. The Body of Christ owes much in the area of worship to the leaders of the Canadian Church. One young Canadian that's been a delight to me, one that's stimulated me and taught me a lot about worship, is Brian Dirksen. Brian has a grasp, I think, of the contemporary idioms of not only music, but of lyric writing. A few weeks ago, we had an opportunity to interview Brian about worship writing. Let's look in on that. I know you'll enjoy hearing him explain the way he writes. Well, the songwriting process for me begins in a moment with, in a sense, God bursting in with what I call a song vision, or an essence of a song, and sometimes it will flood me, and it's all there, and it's all done quickly. But other times, it takes time, and you work it because, see, our goal is to give expression to people's hearts so that they can express their hearts to God, and there's definitely a craft involved in that so that they can. So it's focused so that it's done in a way that they can really unlock their hearts to God, and that takes time. Well, I'll never forget the day Refiners Fire began, and I wrote it. I was at a stoplight returning to my office. I was a pastor at a church, a vineyard church, and this presence of God came upon me so strong, and so out of, it seemed out of nowhere, and I heard this melody purify my heart, let me be as gold, and it was gone again. I rushed back to the office, told my secretary, hold all calls, and I crafted, in a sense, the rest of the song that afternoon, and it's a song that always brings me back to that place of the sovereign gift of God that both worship and purity is, and it calls me back to Him over and over again. Purify my heart, let me be as gold, and precious silver, purify my heart. Let me be as gold, pure gold, Refiners Fire. My heart's one desire is to be holy, set apart for you, Lord. I choose to be holy, set apart for you, my master, ready to do your will. Oh, make me ready, make me ready. Purify my heart, cleanse me from within, and make me holy. Purify my heart, cleanse me from my sin, deep within, Refiners Fire. My heart's one desire is to be holy, set apart for you, Lord. I choose to be holy, set apart for you, my master, ready to do your will. Ready to do your will. Refiners Fire, my heart's one desire is to be holy, set apart for you, Lord. I choose to be holy, set apart for you, my master, ready to do your will. I wanna be ready, ready, ready. I wanna live in the center of your will. Center. I wanna be home. I wanna be home in the center of your will. There's nothing more than we desire in your will forever. So purify my heart, let me be as gold, and precious silver, purify my heart, let me be as gold. So purify my heart. That's what we want, Father. We wanna live in the center. We don't wanna resist or fight against your will which is full of love. And I hope that no one can ever take away. Thank you, Father. Thank you, Brian. It's always lovely to hear that song. You know, one of the blessings of my job is in leading a movement really around the world is that there are many wonderful families that have come among us that have enriched us. And one of those families in our midst is not only some of the finest preachers and leaders but also some of the finest writers, the Butler family. Recently we had an opportunity to sit down with Terry and talk about what worship means to him. Let's look in on that. I know you'll enjoy it. Well, I like the catechism that says, you know, the chief end of man to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. But I haven't found a better one and I think modernizing that is just saying He made us to enjoy His presence and for us to enter into His presence and to give Him love. It's a relationship. So worship is a relationship with God where He wants us to connect. He wants to speak to our hearts. He's touched by our hearts of love for Him and we should be touched by His. One of those things where I didn't expect to write a reggae song, the message is a song of commitment to the Lord. You know, it's to cry my heart to follow you. Part of it is teach me your holy ways. Serious stuff. And I sat down on the floor one night trying to write a real heavy duty serious tune and God said, no, I had other plans and other intentions for this. I went to the piano and I started writing. Da da da, da da da. And I said, no, this is not the same as Cry My Heart but that's what came out afterwards and I'm really glad I did. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. It is the cry of my heart to follow you. It is the cry of my heart to be close to you. It is the cry of my heart to follow all of the days of my life. Everybody sing now. Everybody sing. It is the cry of my heart to follow you. It is the cry of my heart to be close to you. It is the cry of my heart to follow all of the days of my life. Teach me your holy ways so, Lord, so I can walk in your truth. Teach me your holy ways so, Lord, and make me holy, devoted to you. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. It is the cry of my heart to follow you. It is the cry of my heart to be close to you. It is the cry of my heart to follow all of the days of my life. Open my eyes. Open my eyes so I can see the wonderful things that you do. Oh, you're the wonderful things, Lord. Open my heart up more and more and make me holy, devoted to you. Take it, sweetie. Oh, oh, oh, oh. It is the cry of my heart to follow you. It is the cry of my heart to be close to you. It is the cry of my heart to follow all of the days of my life. It is the cry of my heart to follow. It is the cry of my heart to be close to you. It is the cry of my heart to follow all of the days of my life. All of the days. Yeah. All of the days of my life. Make me holy, devoted, Lord. All of the days. That's a W-H-O-L-L-Y. All of the days of my life. I believe in Jesus. I believe he is the Son of God. I believe, I believe. I believe he died and rose again. He rose again. I believe he paid for us all. I believe in Jesus. I believe in Jesus. I believe he is the Son of God. Yes, he is the Son of God. I believe he died and rose again. I believe he paid for us all. I believe he is here. Standing in our midst, right here in our midst, with the power to heal now. And the grace to forgive. Oh, yes, and I believe in you, Lord. I believe you are the Son of God. I believe you died and rose again. He rose again. I believe you paid for us all. And I believe you're here now. Standing in our midst, here with the power to heal now. And the grace to forgive. Yes, and the grace to forgive. One more time. And the grace to forgive. Yeah. Oh, oh, oh. Let me hear you sing. Sing unto the Lord Jesus. Yes, you are the Son of God. Oh. It is the cry of my heart to follow you. It is the cry of my heart to be close to you. It is the cry of my heart to follow all of the days of my life. All of the days of my life. All of the days of my life. Thank you. I told you, the butlers made a major contribution to us. We have another butler brother coming up, Randy, who's going to share a little bit about what he's learned about worship writing and leading, and then he's going to sing another great butler song at the cross. Let's join Randy. Writing songs, now for Terry and I, it's kind of a contrast, and I always use Terry as an example. He does get songs more on an inspirational level. I may get a line or two, or the concept of the song, or maybe have a musical idea, and it usually takes me more like two months to actually put it all together, pen it out. For instance, I wrote a song last year that I had almost a vision. I was driving to work, I had a vision of God bending down to hear His servants sing, and it took me pretty much the whole year to put that, what I saw, to words, and I bounced it off of Terry, and so they don't just land on me. I kind of work at them, I submit the lyrics to the Lord, and just spend a lot of time kind of focusing on verse by verse, in some cases, or the chorus. It has happened. At the cross in particular was a song that was like that, where I sat down at the piano one night, the family had gone to sleep, and I started playing some chords, and bam, there was a song. Some of the best ones happen that way. Right, Carl? I know a place, a wonderful place, where accused and condemned find mercy and grace, where the wrongs we have done and the wrongs done to us, we're nailed there with Him, there on the cross. At the cross He died for our sin. At the cross He gave us life again. At the cross He died for our sin. At the cross He gave us life again. I know a place, a wonderful place, where accused and condemned find mercy and grace, where the wrongs we have done and the wrongs done to us, we're nailed there with You, there on the cross. You died for our sin. At the cross You gave us life again. At the cross You died for our sin. At the cross You gave us life again. At the cross You died for our sin. At the cross You gave us life again. At the cross You died for our sin. At the cross You gave us life again. I know a place, a wonderful place. I know a place, a wonderful place. Exalt the Lord is probably for me has the most meaning because of the first time that we recorded it. I had seen the Lord come so strongly when we sang it and it meant a lot to me in the environment of our home group, but the first time we recorded it we were singing and I heard something like being whispered to me and I thought maybe it was just something to sing kind of spontaneously on the recording and what ended up happening was I slowed down and I heard the words, I hear you, and I realized that the Lord was saying that He heard, that He heard what was in my heart for me. And to know that His ear was turned toward me in that song just meant everything to me. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at His feet. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at His feet. For He is holy For the Lord our God He is holy For the Lord our God He is holy For the Lord our God He is holy Yes, the Lord our God He is holy Exalt the Lord our God and worship at His feet. For He is holy For the Lord our God He is holy For the Lord our God He is holy For the Lord our God He is holy Yes, the Lord our God He is holy For the Lord our God He is holy For the Lord our God He is holy For the Lord our God He is holy Yes, the Lord our God He is holy Holy, holy Holy, holy Holy, holy Holy, holy A few years ago Carl Tuttle wrote a great worship song that I think beautifully illustrates the biblical perspective for healing. It's one of the songs I've heard sung all over the place. I hope it will be a blessing to you. It has been one to me. Oh Lord, have mercy on me. Oh Lord, have mercy on me. And heal me. Oh Lord, have mercy on me. And free me. Place my feet upon a rock. Put a new song in my heart. In my heart. Oh Lord, have mercy on me. Oh Lord, have mercy on me. Oh Lord, may Your love and Your grace protect me. Oh Lord, may Your ways and Your treasure direct me. Place my feet upon a rock. Put a new song in my heart. In my heart. Oh Lord, have mercy on me. Oh Lord, have mercy on me. I told you earlier that we've got a lot of help from Canadians the last few years. We're about to meet another one, David Roos, a great worship leader and a wonderful writer. We had an opportunity to talk to him a while back, and he told us a little bit about a song that he's written called Let Your Glory Fall. Let's look in on David as we dialogue about worship leading and writing and the very song itself. For me, the songwriting comes out of ministry and out of serving and out of touching other people and touching the Lord in that process. And I think, I'm hoping at least that's what gives it its richness if there is any richness there. And I'd say probably 80%, I don't think that's an exaggeration of the songs that I've written have come out of context in ministry times in prayer, in that thing, but usually in a real serving way with other people. And either in a thought will come or an impression will come or a little melody or something like that, and over the course of time becomes a song. And that's real special to me. Let your glory fall in this room Let it go fall from here to the nation's home Let your fragrance rest in this place As we gather to seek your thing Let your glory fall in this room Let it go fall from here to the nation's home Let your fragrance rest in this place As we gather to seek your thing Father of creation Unfold your sovereign plan Yes, of Lord Ways of a chosen generation That will march through the land Dear Lord Yes, O Lord Unenlightened Lord For your unwillingness of power Oh, what you're doing, Lord To release your unknowing thing Oh, God, let this be the hour Let your glory fall in this room Let it go fall from here to the nation's home Let your fragrance rest in this place As we gather to seek your thing Father of creation Unfold your sovereign plan Yes, O Lord Unenlightened Lord For your unwillingness of power Oh, what you're doing, Lord The Church in victory Turn to us, Lord And touch us, oh, touch us Make us strong in your might Oh, overcome our weakness That we could stand up and fight Let your glory fall in this room Let it go fall from here to the nation's home Let your fragrance rest in this place As we gather to seek your thing Let your kingdom come Let your kingdom come Let your will be done Let us sing our praise The glory of your Son Let your kingdom come Let your kingdom come Let your will be done Let us sing our praise Let us sing our praise The glory of your Son Let your kingdom come Let your will be done Let your will be done Let us sing on earth Let us sing the glory of your Son It's all about Jesus It's all about Jesus So let your glory fall in this room Let it go fall from here to the nation's home Let your fragrance rest in this place As we gather to seek your thing We have gathered to seek your things There is no other We have gathered to seek your things No other Oh, we have gathered to seek your things We have gathered to seek your things We have gathered to seek your things Applause We really enjoyed this program. We hope you have too. And it wouldn't be right for us to end it without giving you at least one of the songs that have been born in the renewal revival that we've experienced here at Anaheim and really around the world. In this century, revival has gone on and on and on. And it's delightful to be acquainted with the experience of the multitudes of Christians around the world. Andy Park wrote a song a while back called The River is Here. It's one of the great revival songs of our day. Let's just enjoy, Andy, as he shares and as he shares the song. Yeah, usually it starts with an inspiration, an example. The song The River is Here, I was seeing a picture in my mind's eye for a few weeks of a stream running down a mountain, a river running down a mountain. I didn't have any idea where this picture was headed. And so I did a little word study on the river, the mountain, and things like that in the Bible. And then I went away for a little two-day retreat, and that song came out of it. So it usually starts with, it always starts with some form of inspiration that is really unplanned. It just sort of happens, whether it's sitting down at the piano and I play a chord progression that seems to have something from the Holy Spirit on it. And then starting to ask the Lord, okay, well, if this is the beginning of a song, what is the song supposed to say? And sometimes He'll give me a scripture, and that's the source of the song. And sometimes He'll just plant a phrase in my head, and that theme becomes the beginning of the song. northern music The river flows And it brings me fresh air wherever it goes Through the valleys and over the fields The river is rushing and the river is here The river of God sets our feet against The river of God fills our hearts with cheer The river of God fills our mouths with laughter And we rejoice for the river is here The river of God is teeming with life And all who touch it can be revived And those who linger on this river shore Will come back thirsty for more of the Lord The river of God sets our feet advancing The river of God fills our hearts with cheer The river of God fills our mouths with laughter And we rejoice for the river is here Up to the mountain we love to go To find the presence of the Lord Along the banks of the river we run We dance with laughter giving praise to the sun The river of God sets our feet advancing The river of God fills our hearts with cheer The river of God fills our mouths with laughter And we rejoice for the river is here Down the mountain the river flows And it brings me fresh air wherever it goes Through the valleys and over the fields The river is rushing and the river is here The river of God sets our feet advancing The river of God fills our hearts with cheer The river of God fills our mouths with laughter And we rejoice for the river is here The river of God sets our feet advancing The river of God fills our hearts with cheer The river of God fills our mouths with laughter And we rejoice for the river is here Yes, we rejoice for the river is here Thank you, Lord. Let it flow, Lord, let it flow. God, we pray that this river would flow into every denomination in this nation. Lord, we ask for renewal, we ask for revival. Lord, let the river spread through every valley, every field. Let it touch the driest of hearts, O Lord, that they might know you.
