Today we're going to take a look at the highlights of the World Championship of Gymnastics including the women's floor exercise. Right now we kick off with the men's rings and the women's uneven bars. Let's join the fans at Indianapolis. The Soviet Union's Grigory Mtsutin. Coming off a win in the all around, he's all ready for the ring event. The 20 year old. Finished fourth in the recent Soviet Championships. It's a very difficult event for men. His stillness is paramount. See an iron cross to an L hold. Into a planche. All difficult strength moves in a row. Nice overhead view. They have to display extraordinary skill in arriving at all the holes with absolute precision. Beautiful disc now. Now Tatiana Gutsal, the Soviet Union. The 20 year old. Second in the all around competition in the 1990 Soviet Cup. Tatiana is a mere 64 pounds at 20 years old. She's able to perform this event with ease. Stalled her to handstand. Getting ready for a difficult move. Reverse hecked over the bar. Preparing for a dismount, strong swing, double fly away. Well, Grigory Mtsutin score a 9.875. And Tatiana Gutsal with a 9.95. Well done. Now here's the finest gymnast in all of Italy, Yuri Keki. He did not feel the judges gave him enough credit for his floor exercise program. He will make up for it on this event because it's a strong event for him. He displays confidence in all of the strength parts of this routine. Such as this. They have to move in and out very quickly on these positions. He does the best of anyone so far. Iron cross. Keki got the bronze medal in the 89 World Championships here in the still rings. Watch for these stretch positions in the handstands. Full twisting layout dismount. Pleased with his performance and rightly so. And now here is Shannon Miller from the United States. She's the youngest and the smallest gymnast from the United States in this World Championships and she's been quite a powerhouse. Very impressive. Now it's very strongly. Full twisting giant swing. Reverse hack. Very difficult move over the high bar. Preparing for a dismount. Full twisting double somersault. Flawless routine. She liked it. So did the crowd here in the Hoosier Dome. Meanwhile Yuri Keki scored 9837 on the men's rings. And Shannon Miller at 995. She jumps in the first place. Now Andreas Vecher of Germany. Vecher is the number one gymnast from Germany. Silver medalist on the rings. His favorite event. Just two years ago. Vecher 21 years old. 1988 Olympian. See him doing an iron cross both in an L position and straight position. Very difficult. Lauren into the straight positions take great skill and strength. See how he's moving, swinging up to a still position in the handstand. Ideal position for this event. Preparing for the dismount. Beautiful routine. Andreas Vecher with a 9862 that will leave him behind Gregory Mitsut. And now for the People's Republic of Korea. Winesuk Kim. Outstanding school in the optionals. 9.987. People's Republic of Korea have had a very strong standing at this World Championships, especially with this young lady. By far the best event for her. Reverse hekt into immediate forward salto. Very difficult and unusual combination. Full twisting giant swing into another forward salto. Packed with originality on this event. Double salto dismount. Flawless performance. Excellent routine. She's only 16 years old. But doing well in this international competition. It's a chance for us to look at that beautiful backward reverse hekt into a forward salto. And it doesn't get any better than that. A perfect 10 for Winesuk Kim. There is the story of the day at the opposite spectrum on the emotion scale. Winesuk Kim, a perfect 10 to capture the gold medal. And a tie for the silver medal between Tatiana Gutzow and Shannon Miller. And the men's still ring competition. It was the Soviet Union's Gregory Mitsutin taking the gold. Vekar and Kecky the silver and bronze. Tonight on 60 Minutes, first pictures from the Soviet archives that will horrify the world. This has to be the height of military madness. Nuclear tests on their own people. Also Mel Gibson as you've never seen him. Tonight, 60 Minutes. Simply irresistible. And now we go to the women's floor exercise. Christina Bontasch of Romania to begin. This is Christina's favorite event. So she's going to really pour it on for the crowd. Full twisting layout double salto. An impressive start. And a very American montage of music. She's appealing to that American crowd. She made the decision for her music about a year ago. In preparation for these world championships in the USA. Very strong tumbling with no errors. Getting very strong with a double double salto with a full twist. And a patriotic pose to wrap it up. For Christina Bontasch. The 17 year old. Who took two medals at the 89 world championships. Christina Bontasch with a nine nine six two. Now here's the Soviet Union's Oksana Chudsovichnya. She began her floor expert team. She's often been compared to the 84 Olympic champion Mary Lou Retten. Because she has powerful tumbling. Double layout salto with a full twist. This is usually where the lone ranger rides up. Music is very appropriate for the powerful tumbling she's about to display. A strong second pass. Full twisting double salto. Looking on is Christina Bontasch. Currently in first place a very interested observer as Oksana finishes it. She needs a strong dismount in order to take the gold. Solid landing. A spectacular if not painful finish for Oksana Chudsovichnya. The Soviet Union and the women's floor exercise. It's Romania's Christina Bontasch with the gold tying with Chudsovichnya. And the bronze going to Kim Zemeskel of the United States. Great performance there by Kim Zemeskel of the U.S. to pick up the bronze. But while the wall might have fallen the Eastern Bloc countries are looking as dominant as ever. For us it's time to fold our tent. Until next time, bye for now. You know when the pressure's on it's going to be, it's course is going to get tighter and tighter. These grains here right now are extremely slow for a major championship. I had some guy in the locker room ask me yesterday if the course was too easy. And I said you go out there and play it and then you tell me. The key is first of all to get it in the fairway off the tee. I feel great. I mean if you would have told me I'd be eight under you know before the thing started I'd be thrilled. I'm hitting the ball well, long, straight and doing everything, almost everything well enough to win.
