their say Eyewitness News, first at five, Monday night on ten Welcome back to Sunday Basketball Well the league's newest team, the Townsville Suns, are in full swing Last week they played the touring Lithuanian team Before that they reached the quarterfinals of the Reebok 3 on 3 Super Challenge It was a very good effort indeed Well next up we'll see a report of a very tough trial game against the Sydney Kings It was very much a case of the old meeting the new as the Kings travelled to North Queensland to take on the Townsville Suns The Kings are likely to start favourites for this year's NBL crown and they showed why against the Suns And Dan Brosas comes away with it for the Kings 2-0 in favour, quick play and this is the man mountain, Dean Utoff The Sydney side's option to play up tempo this year sounds an ominous warning to the league Despite the likes of man mountain Dean Utoff and Ken McClary, the Kings looked comfortable with the fast break style Quarter time in the Suns, trialled by seven, but there was little the hometown side could do to counteract the Kings playmakers Dwayne McLean as awesome as ever But it's quickly transition play again and the detrain Dwayne McLean with a great retaliation for the Kings Tim Morrissey there to deflect it away for the Kings and they're quickly down the floor again through Dean Utoff I hope that basket up there is nice and strongly built The Kings come away with it through Keough, Keough runs the floor quickly, gets it off to McClary, quickly to Dalton Dalton with an easy two-pointer from the top of the key At the major break and the result was never in doubt, the Kings extending their half-time 66-51 lead to 30 points by three-quarter time The Suns were playing for pride, coach Mark Bragg opting to give his youngsters a run and they didn't disappoint displaying glimpses of brilliance He's got a three-on-two situation, gets it outside to Mitchell Hill That will bring the roof off the entertainment center, Kieran Mitchell Hill with his first shot of the night and it's a three Off to Jensen, in turn to Mitchell Hill, nice pass inside to Jason Cameron Sydney coach Bob Turner also gave his bench players plenty of court time, the Kings running out convincing winners 138 to 114 Former Illawarra guard Greg Hubbard top-scored with 26 points while Remus Kertinitis and Ricky Jones led the scoring statistics for the Suns Well I think the good thing about it probably brought everybody back to earth as to where we're at After the Bullets game I think there was a fair amount of expectation in the air Although I don't think we obviously didn't play very well tonight, it was a good example of a very inexperienced team playing, a team of veterans And I thought we played very inexperienced and I thought they played like veterans And I guess early in the game that hurt us and once it got out to 18, 20 points it's always going to be difficult to get it back We came out with some intensity, some enthusiasm and we wanted to win and that's the big difference We have to have that attitude being from Sydney that every time we hit the court people expect us to play and expect us to win And none more so than ourselves and we have to get that attitude even though it's pre-season to play every time Well I think the Suns coach Mark Bragg will be the first to admit they have a few shortcomings but they're pretty well a balanced team, Steve I think when they put their team together they had a really good idea in mind They put the young players that they got, the youth players who really had gone out there in hustle, out with the experienced players And to get that really good balance together, Remus Kyrtonitis and Graham Cubank from the Adelaide 36ers I thought that was a really good pick for them Well Remus is a tremendous character, he doesn't speak his English too well but he's a great personality as you'll find throughout the season And he seems to have formed a bit of a combination with Ricky Jones That's right, he has the outside potential to go out there and shoot the ball very well and he also can go inside And that's what Ricky Jones does very well, he's got long arms and he's going to have to do a lot for him to be successful Well I think you'll agree now that the Townsville Suns will be more than ready for the 1993 season Y'all ready for this? From the magnificent new Townsville Breakwater Entertainment Centre, home of the Townsville Suns Welcome to Tams Highlights of the Suns first game in the NBL against the Brisbane Bullets Your host, Bruce Page Good evening and welcome, there's a great air of excitement By tip-off time there won't be a spare seat in the house The Suns are about to play their first game in the big time and in their own centre But the road to an NBL licence and a home court has had its ups and downs Ken Ferdeck, who will be calling all the home game action this season, profiles the Suns history Thanks Bruce, it certainly hasn't come easy for the Suns, there's been a lot of ups and downs as they drive towards an NBL berth Probably a lot more downs than ups, but tonight is an up occasion and it's the one that we've all been waiting for They say success never comes easy and that's certainly been the case with the Suns A North Queensland team in the NBL was first mooted in the mid-80s It's taken six years and one failed attempt before a team took the court In 1990 the Suns were overlooked with Gold Coast getting the nod The main obstacle was the lack of a suitable facility It wasn't until the middle of 1991 that there was confirmation of a facility A joint venture between Townsville and Thurringhau City Councils and the Breakwater Island Trust With the entertainment centre assured, the Suns board headed by David Carmichael went about the business of attracting funds And that didn't come without the odd hiccup In March last year the NBL changed the rules The Suns were told they had to pay a $600,000 licence fee up front There's no doubt it was a setback It's tough economic times, everybody's got their own businesses to worry about You've sort of got to put your priorities in your own business first And if you've got some spare capital, well then you have a go at doing these sorts of things And when we walked out after giving our presentation I was very, very confident we were going to be accepted I didn't have any doubt about that But we just didn't expect the structure of the licence fee A week later the Suns' 18 shareholders agreed to providing the additional money Then on April 30 the day many North Queenslanders had waited for The Suns paid the league a $100,000 deposit From here on in there was no turning back The Suns are now bulletproof With the money in the bank now, the $1 million paid off capital in fact says we are now bulletproof Securing major sponsor Power Brewing was the next step for the Suns The beer company committing itself to more than a quarter of a million dollars annually These people display a level of tenacity and loyalty that defies description And that's the thing that attracted us It's been a turbulent few years for the Suns but many agree it's all been worthwhile The Suns' management says it couldn't have been done without the support of North Queensland The Suns are now ready to make basketball history But the general consensus is the battle has only just begun We'll be back with more of the Suns, are you ready? It's the beginning of their biggest year Am I the only person that misses play? What are you playing? Crazy man? The beginning of their senior year Have we ever looked that young? A time when friends will be torn between who they are How long do you think those two can really last? And who they will become What is this? Looks like an earring He says it too A time when anything is possible And anything can happen Well maybe we'll run into each other again sometime Maybe Starting 7.30 tonight Are you in love with Dylan or something? 90210 Senior year on TED
