to evacuate Australian citizens from Fiji if necessary,
following a second Fijian military coup.
Mr Hawke has tonight warned the coup leader Colonel Rambuka,
any violence against Australian citizens in Fiji will not be tolerated.
Colonel Rambuka staged the latest coup this afternoon.
He announced he had reassumed control of the Fijian government.
The Colonel has ordered an indefinite night curfew
and closed all night time entertainments and Sunday sports.
Hundreds of Australian tourists taking advantage of cheap airfares
and discount holidays have been told to obey the coup
and not to photograph soldiers.
Fiji's second coup comes just three days after the proposed formation
of a bipartisan caretaker government with the Governor-General at its head.

A further 1,500 car workers have been stood down
after talks in the Arbitration Commission today
failed to settle a strike at their component's manufacturer, Flex Drive.
