You got nothing on me. Only one man has relentlessly pursued America's worst criminal. You're calling a man a murderer when you don't even know the kid's dead. But at every turn, the system protects this deadly deceiver. Are you gonna help me or not? This guy killed a kid. Why's he picking on me? What the hell have I ever done to him? And hides the true horror of his crimes. Don't you know a clown can get away with murder? Now, To Catch a Killer concludes. Okay, we're gonna be starting out at the east end. You'll get your dogs, keep your eyes open. All right, boys, let's get these dogs down. Billy. Yes, sir, Mr. Gason. Call me John, all right? Yes, sir. Listen, do you know where Coslow was heading in such a rush? No. Something wrong? No. We're low on elk clamps. He went looking for a supply house open today. When are we gonna get the van back? Soon, soon. Goddamn soon. Billy, I've been watching. You're a good worker. Thank you. Listen, uh, would you like to come out to the house some night? Maybe play a little pool. Sure. Great. It doesn't help that it's Christmas. My guys are catching hell for not being around. By the time they get back from tailing Casey to hell and gone, debrief with Walton, go home. It's not a 12-hour shift, it's 16. Look, they're good guys, Mike. You put together a hell of a team. Well, they're hurting and not just dealt the... Look, you want to pull out? Pull out. Hey, look, I'll let you know when I'm done. I'll let you know when I'm done. I'll let you know when I'm done. I'll let you know when I'm done. I'll let you know when I'm done. I'll let you know when I'm done. working... Let me get back to you. C餅. You're laughing. Listen, a couple days it won't matter whether I pull a Delta unit out or not, right? By the way, our cars are jumbled. I know, I know. I'm still trying to get you these replacements. Yeah, well, I can patch them up. I can't patch up the manpower. It's not just their bitching and moaning. Gacy's given them the slip a couple times. You all right? Yeah. We appreciate you coming by like this. I wish I had better news for you. You're not going to give up, are you? No, I'm not. You know, it's like a bad dream. Keep praying to God I'll wake up and Chris will be home. Why would anybody do such a thing? Why? He can't get away with this, can he? No, not this time. Mr. Gacy won't get away. I'm sorry. Hey, cousin Zach, give me the home phone of Tony Centore. Tony told me that you needed something that the person cared about a lot. Was he wearing a patterned sweater? A blue windbreaker? The description of the clothing was in the newspaper article. You don't believe in psychics, do you? Did he have... fricles? Oh, yeah, a few. And a little bit of a mark on his face? Yeah, he did. He had a little birthmark. He didn't die easily. Bothers you, doesn't it? Of course it does. No, I meant the cyst on your back. How did you know that? Oh, it'll be gone. As soon as you bring the killer in. His hands are bound. His hands are bound and there are deep cuts in them. Deep cuts in a rope. But not on his hands. He planned it. He purposely left the book so that he would have to go back a second time and talk to Christopher. He's a big man. A big man. Big arms. Big hands. A black coat. Leather coat. He works with his hands. It's Casey. His eyes. Behind his eyes. There wasn't a thing about him in the newspaper, Joe. Oh, he's so clever. He's so clever. He prides himself on being able to trick people. He has no guilt. He feels no guilt. There's an instrument. A board. He made Christopher suffer a lot before he died. Can you tell me anything about where, about what he did with the body? No. No. Please. I've got to find Chris. I have to find him. This may be the only way that I've got to catch his killer. Please. I see a building and a tower. A tower and something connecting the tower. There's a lot of machinery and trucks. I don't know the only word I can think of is construction site. There's trees. A lot of trees. And, um, and water. And a sign. The words, um, evergreen. Evergreen. And there's a big mound of earth. I can't see what's underneath it. It could be bodies. I'm too tired. I can't do this anymore. No, no. Don't stop. Please. Please. Please try. Where's the sky? I can't see the sky anymore. All of these people here in the same dark places. All of these bodies. All of these bodies are just... I don't know. Oh, please don't be like what happened in Texas. What are you talking about? The man in Texas who tortured and murdered all those boys. What? Hanley? Arthur Hanley? Is this what... Is that who you mean? The man in Houston who murdered the twelve boys? Who? Miss Grayson, who dug those graves? The man who killed Chris Gant. There could be others. He's been getting away with this for a long, long time. Oh, Chris. Do you know what you are saying? Please, do you understand what you are telling me? Well, how? How do you? How can you be sure? I'm sure of what I saw. If you think there's garbage on telly on Sunday... Pardon me? You're right. Is that right? Charlie Sheen... Are you nuts? And Emilio Estevez... This sucks. ...are up to their eyeballs in garbage. In the two years you have worked here, you have broken just about every city ordinance that pertains to this line of work. You can't say we haven't been a lot of laughs. So if you're done in the dumps... Aww. Can anything pick you up as quick as a laugh? No, sir. No, sir. The best of the best. Hello. Don't work in a bank, do you? You know what's wrong with banks, don't you? Everything's too damn hard. I mean, you answer questions to get forms, to answer more questions to get more forms. Nice if they do something about all that one red tape. I mean, you do the right thing, put a little money away, and what do they do? Fees for this, charges for that. Why can't someone take care of a money without going overboard with fees and charges? It's my money. Am I right or am I right? So why do they spend their time funding big business? I mean, why don't they look after the little blokes, like me? Still, if they did all that, there wouldn't be a bank, would they? We're Australian Central, South Australia's largest credit union. Look, the way this lady described Gacy, you guys do any better? You could have read a paper. No, no, no, no. I kept all mention of Gacy out of the newspapers, the TV. You know that, Jack. Sure. Next thing you know, we'll all be using Ouija boards. Bro, we should have a say on it. Yeah, everybody join hands. Come on, come on. Join hands. Come on. It's serious. Hey, quick throw. Alright, alright. Hey. Hey! Look, I know it's Christmas, alright? I know I've been pushing very hard on this thing. I realize how many hours you guys have been putting in. Yeah, I know. And believe me, I'm the guy that's gotta go over to the chief's office, get him to approve the overtime. Have a good time, Joe. Yeah. You know, I wish I'd been in this job longer. I wish I knew you all better. I wish you knew me. It's not you, Joe. It's the lady. Okay. The lady. The lady. Maybe you're right, you know. Maybe she is crazy. Maybe everything this woman told me last night is crazy. But all I'm saying is what if she isn't? What if she's right? What if this son of a bitch did what she said and we've got ourselves a mass murderer out there? Not just Christopher Gann, not just Trask and Miklovitch and the others we know about. But what if there are God knows how many others whose names we have no idea of yet? Look, all I'm saying is that if she's right, and we quit on this thing now, if she is right and we don't do everything that we can to put this guy away, a lot of other Chris Gants are gonna die for it. You know, I... Look, I'm asking for a few more days. Just a few more days. You know, huh? What do you say? Can I see you, Lieutenant? Can it wait? I'm afraid not. I'm due in court. It's important. Go ahead. We'll wait. What's going on in there? I want a second search warrant. Look, I've got some new information. Who from? I got it from a phone call earlier this morning. I had a phone call today too. I'm Gacy's lawyer. Burns about what? A lawsuit that he's filing against you and the Des Plains police. He said that his client warned you. Why wasn't I informed? Look, I don't know. I figured the guy was just blowing smoke. Three quarters of a million dollars worth. Wrongful harassment, unwarranted inference, and his ability to carry out business, briefest damages to his reputation, you name it. And how long before he gets it in court? Day two, end of the week at the Lagos. So he's also going to file for a restraint order to shut down your investigation. What? Will a judge give it to him? It's more or less automatic. You can't fight it? On what grounds? Besides, Don tells me that most of your men are fed up anyway. I'm running late. I'm running late. We took a little vote while you were out. Popularity contest? Something like that. And did I win or lose? Well, we decided. All of us. What the hell, we can go a few more rounds. Thanks. Let's hope Gacy can't go the distance. Mike, what do you say to your guys really moving in on Gacy? Really start messing him up. Wait a minute. Are you buying? Yeah. Go ahead. So far this guy's been playing head games on us. Let's turn it around now. Let's start mixing him up. You know, push the nice Gacy till the bad guy comes. Stay so close to this guy he stops short and we're up his backside. Probably like that. I want to worry him, Mike. I want to make him think that we're a lot closer to nailing him. You are? Yeah. Something's been bugging me for days. I couldn't figure out what it was. Then this morning, after the meeting, I took a look at the charts. It was a second interview with Mrs. Trask. She told me about other things in her son's car that were missing, including a little portable TV set she'd given him when he moved to his own pad. What's that? It's one of the photos. The evidence signature. It's a picture of a man who was in a car accident. It's one of the photos the evidence signature took. And that was his Gacy's house with Chris Ganton. Remember the bureau in Gacy's bedroom? Yeah. With all the jewelry and Lester Trask's ring in it? Uh-huh. Well, you'll look at what's on top of the bureau. Mrs. Trask, keep any of the papers on her son's stuff? Like her son's television? Hold her in ass. Just gonna see if she can find the guarantee. Anything with identifying numbers on it. I suppose it's a long shot, but... No, no. It's worth looking into. Okay. Anything to help us nail that bastard. I'll let you know. Good work, Terry. He's not so bad. They're all good. I just hope Gacy isn't better. Mike, I want to see what happens if we, uh, try dropping the names of the other missing kids on it. That's fine. It's worth a try. The, uh, crazy lady's description of those... where the dead bodies are, dark place, around all the construction crap. You buy that? You know, last night when I left her, I... I drove all over, displaced, all night. Any place that came to mind. You know that, uh, scout campground out on 76? Yeah, I think so. It went out there. And? I'm still looking. You'd buy the whole McGill on her, right? Hey, she even told me about the cyst rubbing on my tailbone. Sure as hell that wasn't on television. What'd she say about it? She told me that, uh, the pain would stop when we nailed Gacy. Well, I knew you had a personal interest in the case. Yeah, I gotta go. You'll get this, huh? Hello. Oh, it was terrific at the markets. Quality, everywhere. All there for me to pick and choose. Mmm. Oh, don't you worry, Miss Fuzzball. I've got something special for you, too. My dog, made from 100% quality meat. I've looked everywhere. It's important, isn't it? Yes, ma'am. So you can arrest that guy? Well... You know, the last few days when she brought Lester's ring, sometimes I wish I hadn't. It's the finality of it. So hard. Accepting the fact that he won't ever come back. You know, last summer, a friend of his was on a trip to Los Angeles. He called us to say he thought he'd seen Lester on the beach there. For a little while. We hoped. We had our hopes up for a little while. I'm so sorry to cause you more pain. Yes, well... I'll just have to go look for those papers again. What about this one here? Member of the family, recently deceased. He was buried only a few days ago. This is John Gacy's father? Excuse me, Lieutenant, but why are you here? Is it to do with the recently deceased? Yeah, but not this one. Listen. This may sound a little macabre, a lot about this case I'm working on. It seems to be turning out this way. What are the chances of somebody getting in here, say, sometime during the night, and doing some burying of his own? It's impossible, I suppose. We have only two guards at night. Here? Oh, my Lord. If you're thinking about... You would need to get authority from the director to do anything. I understand that. Could you give me that name, please? Tell me that name, please. 805-825-0815 The big mound of earth, I can't see what's underneath it. It could be a body. Hey, you tell Carlson the new information came from an anonymous phone call? I don't know, something like that. It's my mistake. I was trying to get... Your mistake was letting anybody know anything about a psychic. I should shut this whole damn investigation down right now. But you're not. No. And you want to know why. Why? Because if you don't nail Gacy, it's not only your career now. He brings this damn lawsuit. We're both looking for jobs as night watchmen. Why? I'm the one who did it. I'm the one who let you. He's guilty, Wally. I hope so. And it's not just Chris Gant. I know. We'll get him. What do you mean we, white man? Us, the team, they believe it. That include Mike Paxton? Yeah. Yeah. Well, they don't have much time to prove it. Guess I'd better authorize payment. Thanks. Yeah, what's a few hundred bucks against three quarters of a million? Chris and Joe, don't take it like personal. But? I don't think you're going to do it. I think this bastard's too well connected, too clever for us. We're just not going to... I think you're wrong. A couple of days, we'll know, won't we? Good night, Joe. Good night. Good night. You're out of your jurisdiction, so don't try making any trouble for me. Lay off John. Get your asses out of here, white old chap. Not blondies. His is cute. John says it's okay. He says, uh, for you to come on over and have a drink. Sounds pretty good to me. Hey, man, who the hell are you? I'm their boss. I bring you regards, John Miklowich. I said he worked for you. I don't remember anybody with a name like that. You? Sonny described you perfectly. Loud, big belly. Waiter, can you drink it, John? The hell you think you're talking to? Give me that thing. I want your name and shield number right here. Write it down. The consul's not going to tell me anything. Are you kidding? Tell who? Cousin Zach's bringing him in again. Something about the car you sold him, belonging to a missing kid. Same ID, something. Are we going to get it on? Or what? You give Miklovich his name? No, John. I don't want to talk to the cops. Keep your mouth shut. I swear to God I'll drop you right in it. You won't get anything out of me. If I ask you about that car, you tell them you got it at an auction. It's this way. You understand? John, ask what you do to me anyway. Anything you say. You're the one that's wrong and you're lying. You're the one that's wrong. Bastard! What's the matter, Mr. Gacy? Gacy, John. I'm glad to see you're annoying, Mr. Gacy. What, are you guys sticking up for him now? I'm glad to bother you, John. That's all right. It's all right. I know it's not you guys. You got to do with the little pollock sets, huh? Well, not for much longer, dummy! You hear me? Not much longer! Are you identifying any of them? Mr. Koslow has total non-recall about seeing any of the missing boys. Next thing you know, he'll deny he ever told us he saw Gacy messing around with young boys. Okay, I said it, but I don't know what he did with them. Honest! Hey, Lieutenant. Yeah, well, you know, Ted, I just find this a little hard to believe. I mean, come on. You didn't just work for the guy, you were his drinking buddy. You partied with him. You lived in his house. No law against that. You saw him bring young boys into the garage. That's when after I moved out. Huh? You saw his car that you say Gacy sold you? The one that belonged to one of the missing boys? Now, where'd that come from? When'd you ask John? Because I'm asking you. He bought it at some used car auction over in Cicero. Uh-huh. And you believe that? Yeah. You smile one more time, I'll slap it off your face. Ted, we are going to put Gacy away. And we are going to put you away with him, if you don't help us. I can't tell you what I don't know, can I? I got some calls to make. Well, if you don't want to come with us, how about inviting us in for one? Sure, there's no hard feelings, you know? Did you ever see Chris Gant? No. Well, the machine says you're lying, Teddy. Okay, I saw him. Where? Inside the drug store, that night. Did you see Chris when he came outside to talk about a part-time job with LPW Construction? No, I left right away. Did you know Gacy was waiting outside for Chris? No. Did Gacy take Chris back to the house? I don't know, I was near that night, went straight home. Thanks for inviting us in. It's a great place you got here, John. Nice place, I like it. Do you ever do any hunting? You guys shoot? I do. So, what do you have? Scotch. Make mine the same. Wait a minute, where the hell do you think you're going? I've got to take a leak. Hey, where's my drink? A great room you got here, John. Yeah, those palm paintings, they're original oil. Here you go. Is that you with Rosalind Carter? Yes, it sure is. She was a great First Lady. She's a nice person too. Man of the year, that's pretty impressive. Yeah, I organized a big parade for him. If you know what's good for you, you better tell that scumbag Polack you better do the same! Well? Got it. Does it mean anything to you? No, sir, what is it? Well, that's what we're trying to find out. Suppose I read off a list of places, see if that helps. If the places mean anything to you. Remember, you just answer yes or no. Tree Line Road. Is that by the river? Yes or no. No. Summer Hill Road. No. Casey's house. The garage. The bedroom. The attic. The crawl space under the house. Have you ever been down to the crawl space, Ted? Chair Ted, please. What about Casey, what's he gonna do? Damn, what happens to me? No. No, Ted, you're wrong. You gotta believe me, I do. I don't want that man free to hurt anyone anymore. Let him do it to me once. The things he does makes me a punk, huh? No. What? Tell me. What is it, Ted? He made me dig some holes down there in the crawl space. He said they were for drainage pipes. I don't know. Is Miss Carlson in? Oh, sorry, Lieutenant, she just left. Oh, you see, it's very important that I talk to her. Well, she'll be home, but not too late. Come on, tell me. What lies is that Polak trying to get you to say about me, huh? It didn't. I swear. You're lying to me, you little punk. I'm not. Don't call me that. Oh, yeah? Then tell me. How come two of his stooges dare to sneak into my house? I don't know, John. I don't. Why is he doing this to me? Why is he doing this to me? I haven't been a bad boy. If I find out you've been lying to me, I'll kill you too. Do you understand? I'll kill you. Blew it. What, you couldn't get in the house? I got in the house, even the bedroom. Took down the wrong number. Goddamn model number instead of the serial. Kay was nervous, I admit it. He dropped a load in my pants. Not that it'd make any difference. From the smell, you'd think he'd let that dog of his crap all over the place. No, I wasn't laughing at you, Jack. I'd have been nervous too. It's just the way this whole thing's going. I gotta get out of here. Come on, I'll buy us a beer for me to cry in. Lieutenant. Yes. Is the information that Coslow gave you about the crawlspace on the tape, or isn't it? Well, no, it isn't. He was too far from the microphone when he said it. Oh, it's too bad. What about the polygraph test? Is there anything conclusive on that? Oh, no, not conclusive, no. Well, I'm afraid there's still no evidence that Christopher Gant was ever in Gacy's house. Look, and what would you call evidence? To get another search warrant? What you need is a body. Look, that is what the second search warrant is for, is to find the bodies. I'm sorry to bother you. Don't worry about it. By the way, Burns goes into court with a lawsuit Friday morning. Friday morning? That only gives me three days. Well, you're lucky. It could be sooner. Under the circumstances, Lieutenant, I don't see a prayer getting you another search warrant for Gacy's house. Good night. Good night. Are they following us? Yeah, they're my bodyguards. That's true. I do undercover work for this special Chicago police squad. That's just between you and me, you understand? Yeah, sure. Hold on, John. Who's your friend? It's my friend Billy. We're going in to play a game of pool. Is that okay with you? Sure. Good to know you guys are on the job. I mean, he wouldn't do anything, would he? Like he said, he knows we're out here. It happened to the Jews in Nazi Germany. It could be happening to you. The remains of 25 boys kidnapped, sexually tortured and killed by John Gacy over a period of six years were found buried in the crawlspace of his house. Monday night and it's nice to be with nice people indeed. Even if you're all toe suckers. Pretty fair to say Fergie's photos have been removed from the foyer of Buckingham Palace. We actually here tonight live have some unbelievable photos. We have the exclusive nude photos of Woody Allen. Unfortunately nobody wants to buy them. Johnny Bryan a financial advisor and he was just doing an audit of Fergie's toes with his mouth. Now he's the only financial advisor in Texas with athletes tongue. We have the biggest, in fact we're going to follow that whole thing up. We're going to get a close personal friend and confidant of Fergie's for the latest on the royal scandals including the contents of the new bugged telephone call from Princess Di's apartment of the palace. We'll get the latest on the Fergie situation. Who's sucking who's toes with Judy Wade. As you can see Judy desperately waiting to talk to us. We're going to talk to a man who preached free love during the sexual revolution the 60s probably caused all this mess at Buckingham Palace and a Woody Allen's place. Author, broadcaster, raconteur Richard Nevels with us. His fault and with so many world marriages crashing around us we thought we'd find out to where they went wrong. So we've got Australia's foremost matchmaker Yvonne Allen joining us. Musically weddings parties and anything. And we're going to cross live to an average suburban house. Which has been there which has been there for nine months. And if they got troubles apparently this house is haunted and tonight we're sending Ghostbuster Genevieve Collette to sort things out there. And that's that this house is this house has got a problem. Now this is that's that's Tim and Gail. Hi Tim and Gail. How are you? Now what Tim what's the problem with the house? Oh it's haunted. You've got a haunted house. Like every night in the land at about 10 o'clock there's a really big wind on our face and on Saturday night this light went on and off right before our eyes and all the other ones did too. And I turned them back on I thought the electricity had gone off but it hadn't obviously. If you come this way we'll say some more. Yes. And these balls here are often down the hallway moved from where they were left up the night before. Do you have do you have any children? Yes I have a three year old Danielle and a six month old baby. Right. Have you thought about the possibility that the kids might be moving the balls? No they're asleep in bed with me because she won't sleep in my in her bedroom she's too frightened so she's in bed. So she's in bed the balls are moving. Just on that is any of the letters on the on the magnetic blackboard ever arranged? Yeah we often find them on the floor in front of just down on the floor there. Scattered everywhere in the morning they're always on there usually but yeah. That is a classic sign. This room here my daughter won't come in here because she thinks it's... This is supposed to be her bedroom but she won't go in here she says there's a man in here that tells her to get out because it's his room. Right. This toy box. This toy box down here was moved into the middle of the bedroom and I didn't do it and Tim didn't do it. It's quite heavy. And Danielle can't do it it's too heavy. Right when you noticed that was the TV and the video missing? No. I'm afraid not. No no no. Now you're going down where? The hallway? Now we're going down to the really you can feel a temperature drop as you go down this hallway. Yes. Um. You heard running up down the foot here. We were outside one day and there was running down the hallway. We could hear it. Right. And... Oh something just moved there. I don't... I don't go in there because it's... It's a really spooky room we just don't go in there at all. Right. That is the room. That is the room with the horse. Okay. Now that is the room. Now we're going throughout the course of this show to get Genevieve. Where's Genevieve? This is... Hi Genevieve. Hi Steve. How are you? Genevieve. Now Genevieve. Genevieve you've done this sort of stuff before haven't you? You're a channeler? Yes. Cleared quite a few houses Steve. Right. And throughout the course of the show you're going to... describe what you're going to do. Well first I'm going to test the energy. There's a lovely temperature drop down here. Um. And there's vibrations that I'm used to but not a lot of other people are used to. So when the room is clearer I will tune in and speak to whoever is here and find out exactly what they would like to do. And if they would like me to move them on to a better place, a more comfortable place, then that'll be the next step. Excellent Genevieve. We'll cross back a little later in the show. Would you thank Genevieve, Tim and Gail. We'll cross back later in the show for the um... for the uh... for the house clearing. Right now it's time for the very latest news. The queen of the newsfeed. Ms. Genevieve. Hi. Thank you Steve. Good evening everyone. The Federal Government has come clean on one of its so-called secret taxes. But Prime Minister Paul Keating has denied there is anything sinister about a possible withholding tax on savings accounts. These were taxes which we revealed in the budget paper. Nothing secret about them. Certainly not anymore. Treasurer John Dawkins forced to spell out plans for the banks to deduct tax of at least 20 cents in the dollar from interest earned on virtually all taxpayers' bank accounts, not just those who fail to lodge their tax file number. What we're talking about here is people not declaring their income from interest and the tax file number goes some of the way, doesn't go the whole way. The Taxpayers Association says it's outraged, even though pensioners and low income earners would be exempted. A man has appeared in a Sydney court charged with murdering his estranged wife outside a daycare centre. The victim had just dropped off her four year old son. Minutes later she was shot in the face at close range. The 37 year old woman was shot at close range with a sawn off rifle. Police alleged the killer was waiting outside the daycare centre in Prospect and ordered the woman into his car before shooting her. It's alleged a motorist saw the shooting and used his car to block the gunman's escape. He showed bravery and quite a bit of courage. He actually saw him earlier on and did ring the police and informed us that he was acting suspiciously. In Melbourne the families of three Burwood murder victims made an emotional plea today for help in tracking down the killers. Four weeks after the triple murder, homicide detectives admit they have few leads. It was a double tragedy for Liz Dempsey who lost her husband and sister. Just please help. They had so many really good close friends that are just devastated. Lives have just been ruined. Peter was just like a son to us and to lose to one time, it's just unbelievable. Hurricane Andrew has slammed into southern Florida with wind gusts of more than 260 kilometres an hour. The storm has already claimed four lives on its path through the Bahamas. The power has been cut to communities along the coast and highways have been buried in sand. The most dangerous part of the storm is expected to pass directly over Miami's centre. One million people have fled their homes to avoid what could be one of the worst storms in 50 years. A state of emergency has been declared and the National Guard put on alert. Earlier major roads were brought to a standstill as people headed north. Survivors from the sunken cruise ship Royal Pacific say some of the crew seemed more interested in saving themselves than helping the passengers. All 24 Australians on the liner are reported to be safe. The Greek registered vessel was carrying 355 passengers when it sank in the Malacca Straits after colliding with a fishing boat. Two people died and seven are missing while the survivors have arrived in Singapore. In Spain, a freak helicopter crash has claimed the life of a pilot. He'd manoeuvred over a swimming pool to pick up water to fight a nearby bushfire when the tail clipped a fence. The pilot drowned before he could be pulled from the craft. And a new shock for the Royal Family. The Princess of Wales has allegedly been taped in a romantic car phone conversation with a mystery man. It's already been called Diana Gate. Buckingham Palace says it's a hoax. Voice experts claim the woman is Diana. The conversation apparently was secretly taped on New Year's Eve 1989. In it the man calls the woman a series of pet names, including Squidgey, and repeatedly tells her he loves her. The Sun newspaper says it's had the tapes under lock and key for the past two years, and finally has decided to publish the full contents of the conversation after an American magazine went to print with it last week. We've got the extracts from the tape. Him, Squidgey, kiss me. Oh God, it's wonderful. Her. I love it. The latest scandal already is being called Diana Gate, and a mobile scanner apparently was used to pick up the love chat. And that's our news tonight, Steve. Thanks, Diana. Thank you very much. What a mess. The wonderful Jennifer... Am I wrong? Am I wrong? I think this audience has pushed back a little further than normal. On that side there, can we get everyone on that side of the audience to move down a couple of rows, and the front row sits sort of in here on the floor, please. Starting right now. Paul, some music to do that, please. Just... If everyone had moved just forward. If you could just... Move right down. Everyone moving out. Just get everybody to... Why are we doing that? A mess. We have a fine... A fine mess. No, right in. Come on, guys. Right in. Right in here. Right in. Get them right into... Yes, yes, that's it. Right there. Right there. That's good. That's good. Just... That's very good. We have a mess. Fergie and Andy, Woody and Mia. Woody and... Woody and Sun Yee. Our next guest is a man who's been espousing free love for years. He's a radical satirist, broadcaster, author, and I'm certain that all of this toe-sucking... ...is completely his part. Would you please welcome Richard Neville? Now, Richard, what are we seeing here? We've got Woody, we've got Fergie. What are we seeing? Well, I think we're just seeing self-destruction going on. I mean, surely both of them would know that the... ...media-crazed hysteria would be whipped up the minute they did anything wrong. And I mean, don't you think Fergie, when she married a royal, would have been taken into a room by a kind of James Bond... ...boss character and taught about zoom lenses? Said, if you're going to be doing any hanky-panky in the garden... ...make sure it's hundreds of miles away. I think the part of her, in a way, wanted to be exposed. So this is... You're saying it's a very conscious thing on her part. Well, it's uncon... It's... We're seeing... Look, Woody's the other royal family, because the Americans don't have a royal family, so it's Hollywood. So Woody, in a way, has self-destructed, because he must have known that by initiating the court case... ...you know, to get custody of his children, which reminds me of Oscar Wilde. I mean, Oscar Wilde... ...you know, was bonking his boyfriend for years, and then when the father entered the fray... ...he initiated the court case, then ended up in Oscar Wilde going to jail. So Woody initiated the court case that's brought all this to a head. So there's some... I mean, and I think I'm also really concerned about all the judgements we're making. I mean, no one knows, in Woody's case, what really went on. And in a way, with Fergie, as you say... ...it could have been creative accountancy, and there's a lot of accountants around Sydney... ...going round and sticking their chests out and feeling very proud, because the first time accountants... ...have ever been deemed sexy in their lives, and they're absolutely thrilled, especially bald-headed ones. So I think what we've got to look at here is not what really went on. We'll never know. It is what is the media doing. But it's all right to have a dinner party. You can have a dinner party. Now I'm worried about that. But you suck someone's toe. Suck one little toe. Where do you draw the line? Well, I mean, maybe... I mean, I wasn't there. I mean, I don't... I'm personally having lived in England for a lot of the 60s and 70s and remembering their bathing habits. I wouldn't suck any English person's toe. I think it was an amazingly kind of daring affrontory. But what... I mean, look, the latest thing, just as before I walked on, we've now got, what, tape conversations of Lady Diana. This is what... This is... This is Big Brother is watching you. The media suddenly becomes our collective conscious... ...or unconscious, or a witch hunt. What's... What's... Who's running the show? Who's running the news? I mean, I'm guilty of it myself. I mean, are you fascinated with Woody Allen? I am. Fergie, yes. But on the other hand, you sit down to watch the news on the ABC and thinking, "'Glory, I've got four and a half million people starving in Somalia." Your mind is drifting. What you're really waiting for is the next revelation about child abuse with Woody Allen. And I think, actually, the child abuse is... is really the names that those children are called. Do you know the names of Mia's children? No. Well, Moses, Azaya, Satchel, Lark. I mean, if they survive that... We've all started at the Christmas. I think so. We're gonna take a break. I'm with Richard Neville. We'll be back after the break with Judy White to discover what's going on in London. Stick around. This is Laura. Nobody doesn't like Sarah Lee. And welcome back. I'm Richard Neville. And Richard, we're talking about the Royal Family. It's not so much what you do, but how you do it, isn't it? Well, I think, yes, I mean, the Royal Family have not been notably celibate throughout the ages. I mean, they're a wild, rollicking sexual bunch. It's just that Fergie happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time with the cameras pointing at her. And I think there's also a lot of resentment about the fact she's had a lot of holidays and she's costing a lot of money. We're also seeing people, I mean, we live in a decade where we're now tearing down barriers. And I think the idea that, wow, you know, the Royal Family are just as mischievous and as sexy as us has activated people's thrill-seeking desires. I mean, they're absolutely delighted that the Royals are no different and not only that, they can see it, you know, on the front pages of the newspaper. Speaking of the front pages of newspapers and magazines, it's time to bring in an Australian journalist who writes for this magazine. Hello. She's a very close friend of Fergie and it was a photographer from Hello Spanish Sister magazine who sat behind the bush for a couple of days and got the big toe scoop. For the very latest Up to the Minute News, please welcome from our London studios, Judy Wade. Now, Judy, what went on at Balmoral on the weekend? Well, I think you all know that the Duchess left and came back down to London where she is today. And what do you speculate what went on inside? Well, she wasn't in the castle with the rest of the family. She was in a lodge on the estate some distance away. So I don't think she came under too much pressure from the rest of the family. But while she was coming back down to London, the story moved off Fergie on to Diana. And today that's the big story that's breaking in London all about the Princess of Wales conversation or alleged conversation on a tape recording, which the newspapers now have here. And this being splattered all over the front pages. And I think the two stories are linked in a way because there are a lot of mysteries about the Fergie dramas over the last few months. Unexplained things have happened. And some of the royal watchers here believe that this is because certain people wish to embarrass or discredit the Duchess of York to take the heat off the Princess of Wales. What's your view on that? Mine? Well, I think, you know, it's quite possible. It may be true. I don't know. But it certainly seems odd to me that, first of all, photographs disappeared from her home and turned up in an empty flat that was formally rented by the American tycoon Steve Wyatt. And then they were given to a newspaper. It seems odd that the Duchess's marriage separation was leaked to another newspaper long before she planned to announce the news herself. I think it's very odd that she went to the south of France for a break and none of the local French police were informed that she was coming. Normally, Scotland Yard would get in touch and would tell them. And the French Foreign Ministry said at the weekend that they thought it extremely unusual for them not to be told that the Duchess was coming. And they would have then willingly provided lots of gendarmes and dogs, et cetera, to patrol that villa so that no photographers could have got anywhere near. It was odd that a financial adviser sucked her toe. The squidgy. Who's squidgy? Well, I think squidgy is just a love name. Is that a lover or is it a love name? Or a sponge? Well, it may be perhaps a woman worried about being chubby. A boyfriend might call her squidgy. Who knows? Have you heard the tapes? I have, yes. Well, I've heard part of it. And it certainly does sound a lot like The Princess of Wales to me. But I mean, who can prove it? Nobody can prove it unless you have, as I believe the National Enquirer did in the United States, got a voice expert to do voice prints of both The Princess and the tape recorded voice. And they were convinced that it was her. Is it squidgy who says, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you? No, it's the man who says that. Funnily enough, the woman who never says that. How many people are on the phone? Sorry, hang on. Two. Ah, so there's two. So explain the whole phone call because I've got it all wrong. There is a conversation between a man and a woman which was, we believe, recorded from a scanner which can pick up mobile telephone conversations. And the man says to the woman, I love you, I love you, I love you, and he calls her squidgy. Yes. And what do you think he meant by that? Well, it's just a pet name, a love name. That's all. And now this is, the man is, squidgy is the nickname for? The woman. For the woman. Ah, now it's all falling into place. Yes. But why have we got to listen to private conversations that have been scanned by criminals? Why is it reasonable for the media to pry that deeply into people's private lives just because they're famous or royalty? Well, I think the reason that the tape has now emerged, when the newspaper has had it for more than two years and didn't dream of running it before, but it's come up now because an American magazine has run the tape and it's begun to be publicised over here in England. And because the climate has now changed over here, we have had Andrew Morton's book, which blew the lid off the royal family. And I think that the newspapers here are more prepared now to publish material they wouldn't have considered six months or a year ago. But is that a good change or a bad change, do you think? Well, it's probably bad for the royals. I don't know whether it's good or not for the readers, but it's certainly good for circulation. Judy. Because I know that the Sun newspaper in London sold four million copies last week, and that's not bad in a recession. Judy, they must be thinking, the Queen must be thinking, if she does anything to Fergie in terms of taking a title from her, that Fergie must have a lot of information up her sleeve about the royal family. That must be a consideration. I don't believe the Duchess would ever do anything like that. First of all, she would not wish to harm her children. And a lot of people here believe that the Andrew Morton book that Diana is believed to have cooperated in certainly did a lot of harm to William and Harry. It can't be good to have a book published which claims that your mother hates your father. And so I think the Duchess would never ever consider anything like that, certainly not the woman I know. And you can only judge people by what you know of them. And I mean, in the beginning, I, like the rest of the Rat Pack, were a bit doubting her. We thought that she was a figure of fun sometimes. But gradually, over the years, I really came to admire her. And I know she's impulsive. She does things quite rashly sometimes. But I can only speak well of her because I've seen her at first hand doing unbelievably wonderful things. And the work she's done, I feel, which never ever gets publicised enough, because it's often with people who don't make pretty pictures, paralysed people, dying people, has never ever been given the credit that it deserves. Judy, is Kew Strike back in business? Apparently not. We've heard nothing about Kew Strike over here. I think she's history. I think the Duke of York was very much in love with his wife and desperate to win her back. He just didn't realise that she was not wishing to leave him so much as the confines of the royal family, the claustrophobic life and the rigidity of it, which would get any woman down. But I mean, I think we mustn't just say, as some people here are saying, that it's only the newcomers to the royal family, the ones who aren't born royal, who break the rules. We've got to look back and see that in 1980, 81, Princess Anne, who's now considered a very, very dignified, wonderful woman, she had a relationship with her policeman, Sergeant Peter Cross, which led to all sorts of scandalous stories here in London when he sold his story to the News of the World. And he revealed that she later took her little baby daughter to visit him and that he bought baby clothes for the child and that their friendship was abruptly ended by the palace or people close to the palace who decided that he was over-familiar with her. Now, that caused a sensation here, but it's a long time ago and the public have forgotten. And then there was the relationship between Custach and Prince Andrew. That was another rather unwise, perhaps, relationship. So it's the whole family, really, that I think are scoring own goals, you know, one after another. Judy, we'll await the next instalment with baited breath. We'll talk to you soon to get the next edition of this royal saga. Thanks for your time, Judy Wade. APPLAUSE We're going to take a break.
