The Nashville Network. Welcome to America's country home. Hi. Welcome to Happy Trills Theater. Our film is Nighttime in Nevada. And our cast is Adele Mara, a very charming young lady. Andy Devine, bless him, Cookie. And we have Grant Withers. We have Marie Harmon. We have Joseph Crennan. And we have our blessed Pat Brady. By now, Pat's parts are getting bigger and bigger and bigger. He's really acquiring a name for himself. He made a good sidekick. Yes, he did. Anyway, you know, we've always had copies of a lot of our old pictures. And we'd run them for the kids. Well, many, many years ago, as a lot of you know, we adopted four children and one foster child. Well, we got this little boy in Kentucky from a home of 17 crippled children. And we were back there making an appearance in Cincinnati. And we brought him home, and he'd been used to seeing Dale and me on the television back there. So one night, we were sitting watching one of our old pictures, this one. And there's a scene in there where I'm chasing this outlaw and triggering him. About ready to jump off a trigger onto this guy and put a little Sandy. He's sitting there, all glued to the screen, watching it. And all of a sudden, he jumps up and he points at the screen. He turned to me and he says, hey, Daddy. He said, that's Roy Rogers. That's right. Because at home, we were a mom and dad. And he just didn't connect the two. No, he was really living that picture, you know. And he didn't connect them. But you know, some of the children did. And about the same time that we got Sandy, John David, we named him after we got him. But his nickname was Sandy. Roy always said if we had another boy, if we... See, we had Dusty, who's Roy Jr. He said if we adopted another one, he'd call him Filthy. But anyway... Yeah, Dusty, Sandy, and Filthy. Yeah, right. But anyway, at the same time that we got Sandy, we adopted a little seven-month-old baby girl who was part Indian, Choctaw. And the only way we could get her from... She came from the same orphanage that Roy's first adopted child, Cheryl, came from, Hope Cottage in Dallas, Texas. And when Dodie grew up, of course, later we decided that she needed a little girl her age. And we took a darling little girl from Seoul, Korea, whom we named Debbie Lee. And the two of them went to school together, and they were great pals, just as Dusty and Sandy were great pals. And I was taking them to school one day, and it was raining. And right before we got to school, we were about six years old. And Dodie, the little Indian girl, said, Mom, don't go up to the gate, please. Said, stop about halfway back on this block, and we'll get out and walk. I said, but it's raining, honey. She said, oh, but, Mama, just stop back here. I said, what's the matter with you? I said, are you ashamed of me or something? You don't... What's wrong? She said... She got sort of shame-faced, and she said, Well, I just wish you were like the other mommies, and you weren't Dale Evans. So she recognized the difference. You know, one of the reasons we got Dodie, too... You remember when we were getting ready to pick her up and was talking about getting her. They said, well, we like to adopt children out to some of the same family, same type of people. And Dodie's Indian. Yes. And I said, well, I'm part Indian. So Mrs. Carson says, you are? You remember there was an influential lady in Dallas that was coming to look at Dodie? See, Dodie was three-quarter Choctaw Indian, a quarter Scottish Irish. And this woman had quite a bit of Indian blood, and she'd never had any children. And I said to Mrs. Carson, we've lost our baby. She hasn't lost a baby. She doesn't know what that means. We need her. And she said... And I said, we'll take good care of her. And she said, I'll think about it, and we'll have a meeting. And we went on. We had to do Madison Square Garden. We just lost our baby two weeks prior to that. And we got a call from Mrs. Carson at Hope Cottage. And she said... Her name in the orphanage was Mary. And she said, Mary is yours. Well, I let out a war hoop you could have heard all over Fifth Avenue. I was so thrilled. It was one of the high points of my life, actually. And to help to fill the vacancy of our little girl. Yes. No child ever takes the place of another child. Each one has his own spot. But she sure helped. And now it's time to take a break. We'll be right back. We'll sing you a song. We'll make you laugh. Now, let's sit back and enjoy today's feature, Nighttime in Nevada. We'll be back with our feature right after these messages. It's been a long day. Let's go to bed. Honey, there's something I'd like you to sleep on tonight. I think we should apply for Union Fidelity's Guaranteed Life Plus. It's an insurance plan for folks age 45 to 74 that guarantees our acceptance. I called their toll-free number. For free information, it came in the mail today. Sounds great, but we bought life insurance years ago. Yes, but we both know how the cost of living has gone up since then, and our current insurance may not be enough. Hmm. They say in this brochure that because of inflation, a $20,000 insurance policy bought 10 years ago is now worth less than 10,000. I had no idea. But how does this insurance plan help? It pays top dollar cash benefits over and above our present coverage. And we don't have to take physical exams or answer a single health question to qualify because we can't be turned down for any reason. That's hard to believe. I mean, I'm over 50. Listen, are you expensive? Wrong, dear. It's $4.95 a month. $4.95? I've compared other plans, and that rate is among the most affordable on the market for this type of protection. I'll say. And that rate will never increase for as long as we keep the coverage. And no physical exam? Sounds great. Plus, it covers both of us. Yep, and you know how important that can be for a family. If something should happen to either one of us, that cash would sure be useful in meeting financial commitments like mortgage payments, monthly bills, final expenses, completion of the kid's education. I don't think I have to sleep on this at all. My mind's made up. Let's mail the application form right away for our sake and theirs. Hmm. For $4.95 a month, you too can be protected. If you're age 45 to 74, call this toll-free number today. Call 1-800-228-2203, and we'll send you a free information kit on this important guaranteed life insurance plan. Call right now, 1-800-228-2203. Operators are standing by. And now, back to our feature. We'll be back with our feature right after these messages. February is long on sports on TNN. We've been talking about our family in this picture, and because our family has really enjoyed the pictures that we've done, but sometimes that exacts a price. You know, when you work so much, show business families have that problem with children. Children simply do not understand when you're gone so much. And one of those children was Roy Rogers Jr., Dusty. When Dusty was small, he resented show business because he felt it took his dad away from him. And he never liked to perform with us, but he had it. I always knew he had it. When he was about six years old, I used to hear him sing in the shower. Beautiful voice. And I said to his dad, this boy is going to do something. I know I've heard him sing, and he said, well, you couldn't prove it by me. You won't do anything for me when we're out in public to get him to do anything. Well, I would have introduced him to somebody and he'd hang his head and wouldn't even say hello. I know, but you were shy too when you were a little boy because your sister told me so. I don't remember that. All right. All right. But then when he got in high school, he came in one day and says, Mom, I want you to come and see me in a play. And he said, I'm doing Daniel Webster in The Devil and Daniel Webster. He was a junior in high school. And I went to that play and I was amazed. I was flabbergasted because he played it like a professional. I just couldn't believe it. And I came home and told Roy, I said, he has a barrel of talent. Do you know that? And so it just went on that way. And then we moved up to Victorville, the high desert. And Dusty was in his last year of high school. And he started singing with a quartet. And they did church things and they did civic things, all kinds of clubs. And he got to clowning around and being the comedy relief in the singing. And he loved it. He absolutely loved it. Then he went to Ohio. You see, Roy left Ohio and came to California to make his fortune. And Dusty went back to Ohio to make his. And so while he was there, he met a very charming young lady named Linda, Linda Yoder. And he married her and he started singing around in Ohio. But he was working in construction along at the same time. He was, he was and learning to build homes. And he had a television show in Cleveland. And he sang and he did a great emcee job, just wonderful emcee job. Then they moved back to California and he started singing again about what? About three or four years ago, started singing. And he was also a contractor. He built our home. And when he started singing around, he really got the bug. And he started improving and improving and improving. And now it's just his life. His music is his life. So it will out. If the, you know, if the talent's there, it will come out. It's just terrific. And I've appreciated it. Right now, let's get back to our movie. They didn't come in here, didn't they? We'll be back with our feature right after these messages. I'll see you, kid. Get well soon. You know, when a friend or loved one is hospitalized, it can be scary. And today's sky-high health care costs could make matters even worse, especially since Medicare pays less than half of your average hospital bill. In fact, Medicare is in hospital deductible and co-payment. Those are the costs you pay out of your own pocket. They've been raised every single year since 1968. The Part A deductible that started at $40 is now $400. And you could pay that for just one day in the hospital. And all the other expenses you'd face during a long hospital stay could easily cost you thousands of dollars, even with Medicare. But I have a solution. So jot down this toll-free number while I tell you about it. It's the Medicare insurance supplement from Union Fidelity Life Insurance Company. This insurance plan matches Medicare's eligible hospital deductible and co-payments dollar for dollar right now and every time they go up. I'm sold on it because it pays benefits direct to you, not the doctor or the hospital, unless that's what you want. And it pays regardless of Medicare or your other insurance. And what's more, if you're 65 or over, you can't be turned down for any reason. And best of all, this coverage is yours at money-saving rates. So help protect yourself against the cost Medicare leaves you to pay. Call this toll-free number to receive a free information kit that clearly explains it all. And there is no obligation whatsoever. But don't wait until it's too late. Get the peace of mind you deserve. Call today. Take Danny Thomas' advice and call for this important information today. Call toll-free 1-800-247-8500. That's 1-800-247-8500 or write to Danny Thomas, Trivos PA-19049. Call right now, 1-800-247-8500. Operators are standing by. And now, back to our feature. We'll be back with our feature right after these messages. Grandpa, I'm glad you're home. You were gone a long time. I know, Billy. I was in the hospital longer than I expected. I bet it was long and costly, too. Here's another bill, Dad. This one's for my operation. I knew Medicare wouldn't fully cover my surgery and other doctor's charges. They say Medicare covers less than half of the average health care bill, and I believe it. Just think what your hospital bill will be like, Dad, especially since Medicare doesn't cover in-hospital deductibles and copayments. Good thing you told me to call the Union Fidelity Life Insurance Company. Without their Medicare insurance supplement, I'd really have trouble making ends meet. I think everyone 65 and over should call. Speaking of your coverage, Dad, here's your first check to help pay some of your early medical expenses. You're kidding. That's what I call fair service. That's for sure. And they'll cover my in-hospital deductible and copayments. It's hard to believe that today's $400 deductible started at $40 and has gone up every year since 1968. But what happens if it goes up again? Will this policy cover the increases? Dollar for dollar, every year, no matter how much the deductible increases. Can me and Red join too, Grandpa? Sorry, honey, but you and Red are a little too young for a Medicare insurance supplement. But when you turn 65, Billy, you can join, and you won't be turned down for any reason. Say, Dad, what about the cost? Even more affordable than I thought. When I called their toll-free number, they sent me a free information kit with no obligation. Hey, where did Billy go? Grandpa, you think me and Red look old enough now? Come on, Dad. If you or a loved one is age 65 or older, call for this important information today. Call toll-free 1-800-592-3900. That's 1-800-592-3900. Or write to Medicare Supplement, Trivos PA-19049. Operators are standing by. And now back to our feature. Back with our feature right after these messages. I just used this book from the Time Life Home Repair and Improvement Series to build this box. Now, anyone can build a box, right? But using the same principles that took to build this box, Time Life can show you how to build a bigger box, and a rectangle, and shelves, and other boxes with doors, to get this entire entertainment center. Then, other books like Advanced Wiring show how to make it light up. And sound good, too. Not bad, huh? Now, I've always been a pretty handy guy, but these Time Life books taught me some stuff I hadn't learned, things that usually only professionals know. Now, I use my tools more effectively. My projects get done sooner, and they're built better, too. But the best thing is that with the same techniques it took to build the entertainment center, you can build your wife this, the island of her dreams, complete with running water, thanks to the plumbing book. This clever hidden garbage bin, and this beautiful countertop. The Kitchens and Bathrooms book explains how to install the top. Everything's easier with this Home Repair and Improvement Series. Essentially, you just make a bigger and deeper box. Then install the top, the sink, the plumbing, the doors, and do the finishing. You'll even learn how to run wiring for special lighting. Watch this. So now you can take pride in having done it yourself, and give your wife twice the workspace. These books can sure make you a hero. Yes, you too can sharpen your skills and get the satisfaction of professional results with the Home Repair and Improvement Series from Time Life Books. And now back to our feature. Talking about Dusty and Sandy when they were little, we went on a fishing trip, you remember? And we were going for two weeks. And what we did was live off the land. We had fished and we had rabbits and squirrels. And we lived off the land. And we slept out, stayed out and slept under the stars and had a ball. And then later on I taught them to shoot trap and skate with a little 410 so it wouldn't ruin our shooting later on. Be flinching when they shoot again. And the trip we went east, going back to open the rodeo and fairgrounds at Milwaukee. And we went to Mount Rushmore and some of the places like that. I just, it was fun, the kids growing up, but when Dusty was little, he was so bashful, I'd introduce him to somebody and he'd just stand there and look down at the ground. I used to get so mad at him because he wouldn't even say hello to one of our best friends, you know. But he came out of that. And I think since he's out in California, in the last three or four years we've been doing a lot of things together. Last year we went bear hunting and this year we've been out two or three or four times. In fact, last Sunday we went to a ham shoot and I was fortunate enough to win the first ham out. Dusty said he let you get that last shot. Huh? Dusty said he let you get that last shot. Oh he did. You want to bet? Anyway, it's nice to go through those early years when you have problems with kids and as they grow up and they grow into their own. And the last five years I'd say, since Dusty and I have grown up, since Dusty has grown up, the last five years we've been closer than any other time in our lives. And it's really been worthwhile to finally get acquainted with your son. Yeah. We hope you've enjoyed this film and the visit with us. We've enjoyed being with you. So until we meet again on Happy Trails Theater. Goodbye, good luck and may the good Lord take a liking to you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Hi. Welcome to the Happy Trails Theater. Our film today is The Heart of the Golden West and it features some terrific folks that you're going to enjoy. Gabby Hayes, Smiley Burnett. Ruth Turi. Yes and the Hall Johnson Choir. Bob Noe and the Sons of the Pioneers. Yes, the pioneers making that beautiful western music as only they can make. And you know I just was thinking about this. Not only did you have one great sidekick but two and what and two comedians in one picture. Isn't that something? That's very rich. Gabby and Smiley. You know Gabby had been the comedian for so many leading men. These guys moved around in pictures at Republic faster than checkers on a checkerboard. Take Gabby for instance. He did my pictures. He did some for with John Wayne and Bob Steele and Bill Elliott. And now he's going to this is the last one he's going to do with me for a while. And then later on he comes back and does them again. And the same way with Smiley. Gene Autry is going into the Navy, into the Air Force. And Smiley they moved him over into working our pictures. So after Gabby leaves Smiley will be my sidekick for a while. So it's very interesting. I should say well it certainly should have been very interesting. These two characters working in the same picture. How'd they get along? Well they got along great. There's two completely different people. So you don't think they weren't competing with each other because each had their own style right? That's right. Smiley he was one of those what they call a pratfall character. And Gabby was a serious just a funny old guy. His slouch and what he looked like. His voice and his facial expressions. Nobody had a rubber face like Gabby. I tell you it was just terrific. But anyway we got through the picture and they seemed to get along just great. Oh that's great. Well we're going to take a break right now and we'll be right back. Now let's sit back and enjoy today's feature. Heart of the Golden West. We'll be back to our feature right after these messages. You know Roy in your pictures you're always the good guy and the hero. And have such a good clean image all the time. You know it's pretty hard to live up to what they expect of you. When they see you that way in the movies all the time. Somehow people seem to think that people in the movie or the entertainment business are superhuman. And they're not. They're just folks you know. That's right. I think a lot of them think that you should be dressed the way they see you on the screen. That's right. They ought to see me in Apple Valley sometime. I'm a farmer boy and I like to dress for the soil. I wear Levi's and tennis shoes or whatever I feel comfortable in. And I actually I feel maybe I don't want to shave for a couple of days which is normal. You get tired of shaving every day. But a lot of people will be disappointed if they don't see you dressed like they expect. Well I'm disappointed when you don't shave every day too. Well I'll take that as a hint. But autographs and things like this. People don't realize what your situation is at the time they ask for an autograph. You may be on the way catching a plane. That's right. And if you sign one in front of four or five other people and they want you to they come over and pretty soon you're going to snip. You know you don't know what to do. That's right. So I hope that they will understand it when you turn down these things. You're not doing it because you don't want to because it's very flattering to be asked for an autograph. But you just don't have the time sometimes. You've got to catch an airplane. You've got to do a TV show. You've got to do this or that or the other. I think the hardest thing of all is the fact that you're always on. Always on. And you're watched in about everything you do and everything you say. I'll never forget when we were doing the Fat Stock Show and the rodeo at Houston Texas. And we were with the Shamrock Hotel and we were having dinner with Gabby down in the restaurant. There was a big glass thing and all these people were behind there watching every move that we took and everything we said they were trying to hear and they were looking. And Gabby was getting madder and madder and more agitated all the time. And he finally remember he finally said I'll fix them. And so he takes his spoon and he scoops up all the peas in his plate and he tries to balance them on his knife and he picks it up and he gets his. And the people I know were aghast. Remember that? I sure do. Another thing you know with speaking back to our other comedians Smiley. Oh this was a long time ago. He'd go on the road and he'd go out in the lobby of the theater and he'd sign autographs and sometimes he'd sign for two hours at a time. And sit there and just keep signing and signing and signing. So he told me one time we were back he was back on the lot and he said I just discovered a good way to get away from all this autograph. And he said I had my rubber stamp made and he showed it to me and he said I want to take this on this trip. And when they come along I just stamp each piece of paper they give me and I said I won't have to sign. So about six months later I say and I said Smiley how's the rubber stamp doing? He said I had to throw it away. I said what happened? He said we were in Iowa someplace and he said I was sitting out in the theater and I was stamping these and a little redheaded guy come by about nine years old. And he handed me the paper and I stamped it and handed it back and he looked at it and he says if you're too lazy to sign it you know what you can do with it. He threw it in my face. He said I figured I better get rid of it. You know one time when you were out of town I was writing a book and I was behind schedule with my editor. And I was working feverishly and I had my hair in curlers and I had no makeup on. Not an ounce of makeup and I was even barefooted. It was very hot in the summertime. And I had a muumuu on and the doorbell rang. That's when we lived on the highway there and we had no fence or anything like that you know. And not thinking I got up and I ran in there and I opened the door. Well you know I know better than to do that but I just was tired and had a deadline and I was just rushing and going. And here stood a very fine looking young man. He looked at me and he said where's Roy? I said oh I'm sorry but Roy's out of town. He says who are you the maid? I said well no not really. He said Roy's mother? I said no. I said would you believe his wife? He said ahhhh. He said oh Mrs. Rogers I'm sorry I didn't mean to insult you. He said you know he said I'm on the gate at Magic Mountain. And he said you come down and you bring all your children and your grandchildren and I'll let you in free and you can go. You know when you think of the title of this picture, Heart of the Golden West, you think of very friendly, outgoing, family type people. And I believe that we are, and we love people, but so funny, some of the things that happen are just incredible. Yes, they are. You know, I think a lot of people kind of feel like Dale and I are part of their family, and we feel the same way because we grew up with practically everybody that's alive today. And we are relating some of the acute incidents that's happened down through the years, like, oh, about 30 years ago. This was way back. We lived in Encino, and we had an electric gate, but sometimes we left it open. And we never locked our, I was raised on a farm, we never locked our houses. Too bad people have to now. 30 years ago is about different it is now. But we got up one morning, and I heard somebody out there, I couldn't think the kids were up at this time. It was about 6.30 or 7 o'clock in the morning, and I walk out in my pajamas and go out into the den, and here are four people sitting along on the couch. I said, my God, what are you doing here? Oh, they're strangers. They stood up and walked over, they're high and low, and they shake hands with me. They said, we're from Arkansas, I believe they were, and says, we checked the gate, and it was open. We know you wouldn't care. We just come right on in. We checked the door, and it was unlocked. So we just come right on in. We thought we'd just sit here until you got up. And they said, well, I didn't want to say to tell you the truth. Finally, I said, well, would you like to have a cup of coffee? So I made some coffee, and we drank coffee, and I said, you know, you could have really got into trouble this way because a lot of people that wouldn't know what was happening could start shooting and cause a little problem, because I keep a gun in my house all the time, and I'm an honorary deputy sheriff, and I'm on the sheriff's home. But I wouldn't, I'd hate to have to resort to this, but when you don't know, it's kind of hard to understand things when you wake up and there's four strangers in your house. Yeah, you know, one morning, my hairdresser had just been there, and we were getting ready to go. This was also on Amelstoy and Encino, and she had just rolled my hair up, and I just started my makeup, but it wasn't finished or anything, and I had on a house coat, and it was before we were leaving for location. And all of a sudden, I was in my den, and I looked out the window, and here this woman is peering in at me, and she puts her hands on her hips, and she said, why, Dale Evans, I'm surprised at you. You ought to be ashamed of yourself to be dressed like that. I have my boy with you. Why aren't you dressed in your guns and your gun belt and your divided skirt and your stats and hat? I said, lady, I'm surprised at you. I said, I'm surprised at you coming in here at this hour without an invitation. No, I'm not ashamed a bit. I said, I'm not always made up like that. I have to live, too. It's funny. It's really something, the things that they think. There's a lot of things happen. I met a boy back in the Earl Theater back in 1941. And about 30 or 40 years later, I met him someplace back East, and he says, hi, Roy, how are you doing? I said, I'm doing fine with a blank expression on my face. I said, who are you? He said, don't you remember me? I said, well, I don't think I do. Give me a clue. Yeah, he says, well, you should. I shook hands with you back at the Earl Theater in 1941. Yes. They don't realize how many people that you meet from all over the country throughout the year. You know, I got a letter from a man who said, I'm your father, he said. And he said, his name was Evans. He said, my name's Evans, and I'm your father, and I was with you the day you fell off a horse and broke your back. That's the truth. That's the truth. Well, people say some very funny things, but they're wonderful. And we love you. And we're so glad you were with us in the heart of the Golden West. And right now for the Happy Trails Theater. Today's film is a very heartwarming film, and it's called Song of Arizona. And it concerns Gabby's love for children. You'll enjoy this. He has a whole bunch of kids in his place, kind of reminds us of home, we've had a lot of children too in our family life. But Gabby, he and his wife were together from the time they were just youngsters, you might say, or 16 or 17 years old on the stage in New York. And they were together for 60 years and had a wonderful married life. And he loved her. Everything she said was right. Just devoted. No matter whether it was right or wrong, it was right in his book. And he, one time he got sick and I heard about it and I called him on the phone and I said, how you feeling Gabby? He says, oh, not very good. I said, well, why don't you come out to the house and have dinner with us and we'll go over to the gun club and do a little shooting of trap and skate. He liked to shoot. And he says, well, I can't even drive a car. I said, well, I'll drive a car for you. I'll come out and get you in fact. I'll come out and get you and bring you out here and we'll go over to the gun club and shoot some trap and skate. And then we'll have dinner that night at our house. So we did that and we had a wonderful time shooting, came back to the house and Gabby sat down and we had the big round table that was made for us by George Montgomery. And we had the kids sitting all around and we have a little word of prayer, a little grace every, we each want to give each one said grace and Gabby was sitting there and we started eating and he didn't eat anything. And his tears rolling down his face and, and finally looked up at me. He says, do you realize how lucky you are? Well, we always realize how lucky we are. Anytime you have a family and a lot of love and care in a family, you're lucky. And anyway, Gabby, he went ahead and we finished. He finally ate a little bit and I took him home that night. But that's the kind of a guy Gabby was. He had a lovely, wonderful life, but it was lonely, had no children. Just a niece. That's all the family he had. Yeah, that was it. Was a niece. Yes. And when he lost his wife, that was, he just kind of threw in the towel and gave up. But friends had come by and perky him up a little bit. That's right. Yeah. Yes. Well, it's time for us to go for a break and we'll be right back. If you get painful headaches, you should know that recently people like you nationwide took part in the largest headache test ever. I just used this book from the Time Life Home Repair and Improvement Series to build this box. Now anyone can build a box, right? But using the same principles that took to build this box, Time Life can show you how to build a bigger box and a rectangle and shelves and other boxes with doors to get this entire entertainment center. Then other books like Advanced Wiring show how to make it light up and sound good too. Not bad, huh? Now I've always been a pretty handy guy, but these Time Life books taught me some stuff I hadn't learned, things that usually only professionals know. Now I use my tools more effectively. My projects get done sooner and they're built better too. But the best thing is that with the same techniques it took to build the entertainment center, you can build your wife this, the island of her dreams. Complete with running water thanks to the plumbing book, this clever hidden garbage bin and this beautiful countertop. The Kitchens and Bathrooms book explains how to install the top. Everything's easier with this Home Repair and Improvement Series. Essentially you just make a bigger and deeper box. Then install the top, the sink, the plumbing, the doors and do the finishing. You'll even learn how to run wiring for special lighting. Watch this. So now you can take pride in having done it yourself and give your wife twice the workspace. These books can sure make you a hero. Yes you too can sharpen your skills and get the satisfaction of professional results with the Home Repair and Improvement Series from Time Life Books. He was the original Little Beaver in the Red Ryder series. Mitchell Borgs. With Don Redberry. Edmund Cobb. Yes, and Lyle Talbot, who was really a leading man. Yeah, back in the earlier days, he was a very handsome leading man, did a lot of pictures. In fact, he was handsome even at this age. Yes, he was. And he always knew his lines and he was great to work with. He really was. And you know, I thought it was such a good touch in this picture to have the Mitchell Borgs choir because their voices were so fresh and beautiful. And when they sang, it almost sounded like one huge organ chord. Just so pretty. And it was very heartwarming to see the interaction, you know, with the boys and with Chip, my half brother, you know. And this. This family there, the only family he had for a while, he was the father, you know, kind of overseeing the boys. Yeah, that's right. And you know, children of prisoners or of outlaws really have a rough, rough time. And I think this story really delineates that. It really puts it out to show that they need a lot of extra care and love and understanding. So let's get back to our feature, Song of Arizona. Well, when I was with the sons of the pioneers, the first pictures we started to do was some with Charlie Starratt over at Columbia Pictures. Oh, really? And we just signed a contract with him. I did one picture, and Dick Curtis was the heavy, and that's when we first met him. And then later on that year, 1937, I signed my contract at Republic, and I left to some of the pioneers, and they came back with me later. But Dick, a little later on, he got interested in some real estate down in between Yucca Valley and Palm Springs. And he started- You live a country down there. Yeah, it's real rocky, and they had some valleys. Yeah, Joshua Fries and- So he got interested in that and started developing a place, and they called it, since we were with the sons of the pioneers on those pictures, and he invited us to come down and they called it Pioneer Town. Yeah, I went down for that, too. Yes, and they make a lot of pictures down there. In fact, Gene Autry made all of his TV series down in Pioneer Town. And since then, of course, you and I, as you remember, we got a lot or two down there. That's right. And I was getting that, when we had the groundbreaking ceremony, we were all invited to come down there. And of course, I took Trigger down, and it was just a big blowout of everything. Everybody came that knew anything about the Cowboys and the situation. They had advertised it real well. And while we were there, there were a lot of other horses. And some guy kept pestering me all morning. He said, I want to have a race with you and Trigger. I got a horse that can beat Trigger. And when he said that, the hair went up on the back of my neck. Because I knew what Trigger was. He was half-thermal, and he could really fly. So finally, I accepted. And Trigger was getting up in years at that time. So I said, OK, let's get out here. And we laid out in the main street. Yeah. And that was high altitude, too. Yeah, it was about 2,000 or 3,000 feet. Yeah, but I mean, Trigger was usually in Los Angeles before that. You know? Well, it didn't make any difference to him. Anyway, we got back, and they shot the gun off like the old days. It was pitiful. I just ran off from him. Trigger just backed his ears up. He was mortified, really. And I looked around, and the guy was riding off in the dust over towards the rocks. He didn't say a word. He said, I guess I was wrong, you know? Yeah, well, you know that lot in Pioneer Town wasn't the only thing that you were involved in. By this time, you were really into all those Roy Rogers products. And the kids just had everything that carried the name of Roy Rogers. For instance, like this, remember the lunchbox? Oh, the lunchbox, yeah. Chow Wagon, Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Chow Wagon. Your picture's on there, and mine down here on the end of this thing. That one, and remember the camera? The camera, and we had Roy Rogers and Dale Evans wristwatches and cowboy outfits. At one time, we had about 500 articles, 400 articles. That's right. That's right. About 150 manufacturers. Our poor children, they had to have everything. They're always talking about how much, you know, when we were sponsored by different people. I remember the kids just griping like crazy because they had to eat oatmeal every morning. Remember that? You know, and then our girls, and Dusty and Sandy, and the girls, the teenagers, all had Roy Rogers drapes and Roy Rogers bedspreads. And of course, by the time the girls got teenage, they really took a damn view of that, because they were into Elvis Presley and into the rock thing, you know, and that was a say for them. It's been very good. It really has. All the commercial tie-ups. Oh, we got some new ones, too, starting back. Yeah? You know? The what? I said we have some new products starting back, which is great. A lot of them going right now. It really is. It's kind of fun. It makes a full circle. We've got several generations. Do you know that? People that have grown up with us, and now the pictures are playing. Now the pictures are playing. And we've got a new generation that know us. It's amazing. We have a question and answer situation every once in a while. We go on personal appearances. One of the first questions somebody will ask me is, how old are you? I gave one little old boy a problem one time. He says he's about nine years old. He's sitting down in the front seat. He says, how old are you, Mr. Rogers? I said, well, I'll give you a problem. I said, I made my first picture when I was 26 years old. And that was in 1938. You figure it out. Yeah. Well, we went on with the show. And about a half hour later, his little hand went up, and he hollered up again and said, Mr. Rogers, I don't know how old you are now. I said, how old am I? He says, 29. Bless his heart. Thanks a bunch. I said, I'll accept that. But a lot of situations come up like that. That's right. So until we meet again for Happy Trails Theater.
