Hello, I'm Frank Hyatt. For many years, more years than I can remember, or more years that I like to remember, I've been calling Rugby League, and it's wonderful to go back in reverie to remember some of the great players, some of the great games of the past. And tonight, I'd like to take you back 20 years to the grand final in 1961 between St. George and Western Suburbs. What great players were involved, and what a wonderful setting at the Sydney Cricket Ground. There are over 61,000 people there, and apart from the football, I'm sure you'll enjoy seeing the changes in hairstyles and the changes in dress of people from 1961 to 1981. The setting was there. St. George and Western Suburbs were equal minor premiers. In the first round, St. George won by 12 points to 9. In the second, Western Suburbs won 16-13. St. George had won the semi-final by 9 to 4, so there was very little between these teams. And then some great names were involved for Western Suburbs, Arthur Summons, Keith Holman, Peter Diamond, Noel Kelly. What great names in Rugby League. And then in St. George, we had the great Norm Proven, Reg Gassner, Raper, Clay, Kevin Ryan, and well, just such a galaxy of stars that it makes you wonder just how much better Rugby League can be than in those great years. Well, they got started with the referee Darcy Lawler bringing colour to the game and with the crowds coming from North, South, East and West, the setting was just ideal for this wonderful grand final of 1961. Let's have a look at it. A crowd of 61,196 attended the Sydney Quick Renners for 10 of the 16th and the big occasion for the last Rugby League match of the season, the grand final between St. George and Western Suburbs. Well, that was 20 years ago and it's a long time to look back. We've had some many pleasant memories, but always the grand finals stick along in the memory and well, West are great opponents and grand finals are always very difficult, very hard. That 61 grand final was, that was my last game and I was hoping that West were going to be lucky enough to knock over the St. George team. They'd won so many on the trot. Early in the morning, the weather was quite kind, but during the afternoon, it became overcast with intermittent rain falling. As you look around here, you can see sections of the crowd who really enjoyed this presentation of St. George with a red and white banner coming through led by the captain, Louis Wilson. Out on the field now and the boys to attend this great presentation. West was always a tough team to play against. Played a similar style of football to St. George and we were unfortunate in the run up to the grand final to lose our captain coach, Ken Carney, which threw a lot of pressure back onto the other members that were still in the side. St. George at this time, well, had won five grand finals. We were playing our sixth at that stage. I missed the grand final in 59 through Wingsbury. I played every game, but I missed the grand final. Played in 1960 and this was my second grand final. But I do feel that we could have controlled them with Johnny Raefer and Bobby Bugden himself has got a very good understanding. We've played for many grand finals and we talk together all the time and I feel that we could have handled them, yeah. Now Western Saturday being led out by Keith Harmon and the boys at the gate played Omics to Keith Harmon who played his last game here at the Sydney Creek ground with the colours that he made famous in the little club at St. Peter's. As you can see, the boys going right round in great admiration for Harmon and his last game at the Sydney Creek ground this season, which turned out to be his full retirement. It was Keith Harmon's last game after without a doubt a fantastic career and probably one of the best careers any football could have in Australia. I enjoyed playing against Harmon. He was really one of the top great halfbacks and tough as he was. You could never say die that man, never say die in a football film. And I remember Holwell that day, he went down fighting as he always did, not only in club games but also in test matches. Now the Eastern Command Band which has appeared here at the Sydney Creek ground right throughout the season on the most important occasions. Well it's action factors the crowd as the boys of Western Suburbs move around in front of the MA Noble stand with the make five supporters over there and the players of St. George and Western Suburbs line up for the toss. It has been a great season of Rugby League and the teams that have been knocked out of the semi-finals such as Bellemaine and Western Suburbs contributed to one of the greatest seasons this year in Rugby League football. We knew it was going to be a tired, hard, bustling type of game, it was West by. With the strength that was usually the first 10, 15 minutes of a game like a grand final, the softening up process, Western Suburbs had some pretty good forwards on that side too and you know Shea and Charlton and Noel Kelly and company and you know there was no love lost in those first 10, 15 minutes. Well Lowefee Darcy Lawley right out in the middle of the pitch, waiting now for the kickoff to commence. Bobby Bugden the former international halfback of St. George placing the ball down on the halfway mark with referee Lawley alongside of him. Bugden moves into this one and the big game is on at the Sydney Creek ground. The ball's feeling here downfield and the Western Suburbs 25 yards mark and from the ruck play here, referee Darcy Lawley puts down the first scrum 20 yards out from the Magpies line. On the run to pick up the ball is the former rugby and international Arthur Summers to work the scrum. Down they go and a full blooded effort from the front doors but the ball's heeled back here and once again Lawley asked for the ball to be placed in. In it goes, West Winders won, Holman gets it out to Martin Mutt moving up the centre of the field has caught here and quickly brought down. The good tackle there to mark him was Brian Clayey. The ball's picked up by Kelvin O'Shea who gets his supports moving up fast going out to Hayes in the head gear who fumbles, drops the ball. Holman tries to gain possession but Provan gets up playing the ball back here. In a flash has gone out the right but gives a long pass running off him as Bugden. Bugden makes the break, takes play, kicks downfield and comes off the chest of Parry's and goes into touch over on the hillside of the Sydney Creek ground. The second scrum forming up, Summers works the scrum, in it goes, locked in the tunnel those hookers are on the ground here but Bugden clears the scrum here, the pass going out to Brian Clayey. Clayey gets his supports moving with the pass going out to Brown who fumbles the ball which is picked up by Lumsden. Lumsden Crofts comes inside but the referee has down the whistle and scrums him up once again. Summers number seven working the scrum for the magpies, in goes the ball. Bugden on the alert picks up moving nicely around the scrum base, gives it back inside beautifully to Clayey who moves down towards the Western Saddle's line, couldn't get the pass out and was tackled. Ball and all which is picked up from him by Summers who bears out towards the hillside of the Sydney Creek ground. Summers has caught here, sped in the ground by Bugden. Half a Summers, number seven plays the ball back to the ruck, half in Barsey who gets his support from Mr Charlton from Chipper Martin. Martin wending in amongst the ford of St George there to bring him down with Brown from the play the ball. Carson clears the ruck this time with the pass going out to Charlton. Charlton is tackled here by Proven, lay on the magpies, 25 yards, Marcus Charlton plays the ball back to Hooker Kelly who gets his support from the faster Hayes in the headgear. Hayes is brought down, quickly tackled, Martin the play the ball by Ryan. But Carson clears it this time with a pass to Kelvin O'Shea who once again is tackled by Proven. But the referee Darcy Lawler has given a penalty here to Western suburbs offside in the rucks and George. Coming up to take this particular penalty kick is Calvin O'Shea who kicks out towards the hillside of the Sydney Creek ground, going in a touch, a signal by the touch jugs. No doubt you can see the big crowd over there on the hillside as the scrum goes down once again. But it works the scrum, it's won by the magpies, Holman gets his support from the fast going O'Shea Crossfielder Martin. Martin's hemmed in here and brought down tackled by Gazznia with the help of Lumsden, played just over the halfway mark as Martin plays the ball back this time. It's gone left. He wants the centre to where Brown of Western suburbs picks up, lays the ball back once again to Charlton and gives a spear pass, nice infield here to Summers. Summers moves beautifully downfield as Cappley passes to some George's defence, comes away from Graham, Jason behind it, quickly put on the ground here, the ball rolled through and picked up by Graham. Brovan brought on the ground here on the Western side as Brown alongside of him picks up for some George. Kevin Brown plays this one back in the rocker half position as Louis Wilson who clears it too nice with a faster play. They look for Lumsden, gives it to Lumsden, Lumsden's tackled by Calvin O'Shea and thrown on the ground. Lumsden getting to his feet to play this one back as Mark Patch drove it to the ball but Brovan clears it this time, a penalty here, to some George. Wilson has possession of the ball as some George's captain, gives the ball back in turn here, to the full back Brian Graham to come up and take this kick. Graham kicks for touch with a full blooded effort too, a signal by the touch judge going at the top just this side of the halfway mark. One huge sea of faces over on the hillside as the strum breaks up as some George winning it, it's gone out to Clay Clay, moved down towards the halfway mark, turns the ball beautifully and failed to Graham and the St George full back has brought down, playing the ball back here. Kevin Brown the dummy half gets it to his support here, a fumble by Brovan, the ball's along the ground and Western sub is a peter half possession just over the halfway mark and the rocker has got a mark, Patch is out of the hillside tackled by Brovan, way just on the halfway mark as this time West has possession once again with the ball being made, did the job here, the long pass going across Fielder-Hollman who's brought down here, on the play the ball, it's played back once again, out to the hands of Kelvin O'Shea with some George Ford standing up, Kelvin O'Shea puts his berth to the ball, goes over the head of King, in a touch, Johnny King with the ball in possession, the moment as they strum down over on the hillside, Buggman gets his pass away to Clay, Clay full of running has tackled here, tried to get the pass out, couldn't do so, it's on the ground and picked up by Raper, Raper tackled just over the halfway mark by Hayes. We concentrated the Fords and getting in there and really giving them some in the Fords itself but then when we got the ball the tune changed and the Western Suburbs Fords were surprised that we never got into them, you know the tough clashes which they expected, they saw the ball flying out to the open to our wing three quarters and if I remember rightly like you know that's where a lot of our tries were scored. Music Once a jolly swag man camped by a bella bong and invented the barbecue, it cooked steak so perfectly that despite a few teething problems nothing could dampen people's enthusiasm for it and now with a little help from electricity, Breville have ironed out even the teething problems with the country griddle, it has a cast iron cooking surface which spreads equal heat over the whole griddle and retains it so you can cook enough steak for six to eight people wherever you can plug into electricity. Breville, better ideas sooner. Ever notice when you shave how the blades get clogged? Well here's the solution, push clean blades in the Ultra Pivoting Head Razor from Schick. Do you excel with your jam cakes? Your jam scones and your jam pancakes? How nice it is to say, as Sir Henry Jones often did, I excel with everything I do. Having Chinese takeaway tonight? Can't wait to get it home before it gets cold? Uh-uh. Oh well, it's a meal that can't go wrong. Honourable Chinese food, contain finished ingredients, snap flaws into sealing goodness. Like, cutted prawns, combination fried lice, braised chicken, or steak and black bean sauce, all with delicious vegetables. Honourable Chinese food, fresh from your supermarket freezer. Why not dine out at home tonight? That referee Darcy Lawler has scrummed them down, almost on the halfway mark as Clayworth Buggdon working the scrum of St George. Down they go, both hookers are struggling on the ground here. As you can see, Bob here, the whistle has gone. This time it's against the former international hooker Kelly, backing with a loose arm. Now Brian Graham coming up to take this particular kick, forcing George. Brian Graham has been a great custodian forcing George this season. Kicks for touch at the hillside of the Sydney cricket ground, and to now play the travel down 20 yards out from the Magpies line on the land weekend. Down they go for the scrum of Arthur Summers, number 7 endeavouring to work the scrum. Plenty of weight in the scrums of St George. You can see Rape are pushing his heart out there. And the ball's won by St George. It goes across Filder Gasly, who turned it in for the King, who came nice in from the wing. Young King plays the ball back here, picked up by Rape at the clay. They made the fumble, the ball's picked up by O'Shea, who gets his pass to Patch. Patch appears to have knocked on. And the referee Lawler will scrum them up for the knock on, resulting from Patch. Arthur Summers, the halfback at Western Suburbs, picking up the ball. You can see plenty of weight in that crack of O'Shea, and Rape are down these knees with O'Shea pushing just as hard too. In goes the ball. But penalised here is the second row play and a penalty to St George against the halfback, Arthur Summers, placing the ball in the second row. Now Brian Graham coming up to take this particular penalty kick from the breach there. Brian Graham moves into this one. It's in the air and look at it, some magnificent kick going right between the posts. Well the big crowd here certainly stopped right till the end of this thrilling climax of the season to see who was going to take out the coveted premiership of 1961. The ball's in the air out towards the hillside of the Sydney cricket ground, and so play now has swung up to St George 25 yards mark. In goes the ball placed by Bugden, but it's gone across Filder Holman, who gives it to Diamond. Diamond couldn't handle the ball, it's picked up by O'Shea. And Big O'Shea dropped the ball and more or less was reeled offside by the referee Darcy Lawler. Louis Wilson with the ball in hand gives it back to Brian Graham. Graham coming up to the mark and drives it well downfield, getting great distances with his kicks today. The same Brian Graham kicked it into touch over on the halfway mark or less on the hillside of the Sydney cricket ground. The low rain fell right throughout the afternoon. It was quite entertaining football for the big climax here. Here's Gatham making the break, brought down on the halfway mark, gets to his feet. That once again play has moved in centre field on the Western suburb side of half place. And George's up possession with a pass going out to Brian Clay, who draws the Western suburb defence. Gives the perfect quick pass to Eddie Lums of the World's Best Winger, who goes out to Scalpel. Down on the Lundwick end of the Sydney cricket ground, a put-up down for the first in George Clay. We had a pretty good back line and that's where we intended to play. As a centre three quarter, playing outside Brian Clay, well it was always a great help. Pop as we call him and he used to look after us, he used to serve a great pass, give us every opportunity to make the break. A mighty execute of movement there by Brian Clay and Brian Graham moves in to take the conversion going right between the posts to have the extras. And those boys move up once again. Now Parrish resumes play from the halfway mark with a kick well downfield and from Jupp possession. This time it's Wilson who clears the ruck, gets his pass, and it's gone acrossfield to Brown Brown, racing downfield is caught by Martin and dragged on the ground, taken and all. From the play of the ball this time it's Hookah Peter Armstrong who clears ruck with a pass going around the blindside to Raper. Raper veers down towards the hillside, quickly tackled, marked in the play of the ball by Neville Charlton. Armstrong once again gets his support from the pass to Wilson, running wide of the ruck, centre to Clay. Clay steps out in an attempt to tackle, still goes down towards the halfway mark. Powerful, terraweight type play, hard man to bring down, but the ball rolls loose away from him on the halfway mark. He was also a man that was able to match his wits with the forwards also. He was tough enough to do that. He wasn't a fast man, he was a comparatively slow man. But a man with plenty of football fundamental brains, men and plenty of guts. That Western Saddlers have possession just on the halfway mark. This time it's Hazel who clears the ruck with a pass going nicely acrossfield. The Western boys are trying to shot the ball around here and eventually caught in possession is Martin, dragged to the ground. From the play of the ball this time it's gone out to Charlton. Charlton gets it away to Holman. From Holman it's gone acrossfield to O'Shea who drives it well downfield. They up towards the hillside of the McRig ground. Brian Graham makes the fumble, picks up, gets it away to Johnny King. Johnny King sidesteps here, goes in amongst the Western forwards and is brought down. St George have possession with King playing the ball back here. Goes to the hands of Proven who gets it away nicely this time to Bugden. From Bugden it's gone acrossfield to Johnny Raper. Raper moving out towards the Western side. Throwing his man Gaz here in. Gaz he couldn't get to the flick pass. Raper put it on the ground. But Western Saddlers have possession here this time with Kelvin O'Shea getting his pass away to Parrish. From Parrish to Martin to Haz. Haz moving out towards the hillside of the Sydney Creek ground. Gets his pass away nicely to Diamond. Diamond is brought down. Western Saddlers have possession here just inside the halfway mark. Yikes to this time of Charlton but is quickly caught, tackled by Wilson, slipped the pass away. And Western Saddlers have possession out in their own 25 yards mark. Hookah Kelly plays the ball back this time. It's gone to Patch Patch. Crashed in amongst the forwards but quickly and well brought down there. The good tackle by Ryan. West have possession once again of Charlton. The whistle has gone as Charlton has the ball in the penalty here to Western Saddlers with Kelvin O'Shea taking this kick. Kicking out towards the hillside of the Sydney Creek ground. But nicely taken here by Brian Graham. Stepped away from attempt of tackle and shot the pass away to Bugden. Bugden gives it to Johnny King. King comes up towards the halfway mark. Looks well downfield and chases the ball which is bouncing away at random. He summons and also Parrish but Parrish picks up. Stepped away from King with a side stepping run. Still going goal. Up towards the hillside goes Parrish. Chased him behind and eventually brought down here. And players mid the half and 25 yards mark on the Randwick end and the Western Saddlers turn. Charlton has possession. Pleas the ruck this time. The pass has gone to Charlton. Gives a one handed pass this time. The hook of Kelly is moving out towards the hillside and as quickly as brought down. They over on the hillside. One huge sea of faces here. With a big crowd of 61,196 have dropped right to the end. To see the climax of this very hard fought grand final. Holman put on the ground on the Western Saddler 25 yards mark. But he has played the ball back here to Hayes. Who gets his supports moving with a pass going across from the durable Kelly. Kelly is brought down here. Tackle by Clay and Wilson. But the ball is heeled back here once again. Kipping off the ground is cast from the hands of Charlton. Charlton gets out towards the hillside. Stepped out and attempt to tackle. Moved away from another one by one. Was brought down here. That slipped the pass away but it's on the ground. Pick up again by Charlton. Is offside here and the referee Darcy Euler. Hello. West South possession once again from the ruck. It's gone right across the three quarters. And eventually brought on the ground this time is Brown. Who gets to his feet. Playing the ball back this time. It's pared well downfield. And eventually picked up by Martin. Is moving nicely downfield but once again is caught. Play almost on the halfway mark. Lane coming down at several parts during the avenue of this game. Western Savage have possession this time. With the pass going out the cast and the haste at Charlton. Charlton tearing up towards the halfway mark. Is put down once again. Played dangerously close to the halfway mark. In this very hard fought grand final. Not on the spectacular but believe me it's been a real hard game right throughout. Moving downfield this time is Barthie who has gone without the ball. But he gets to his feet. Playing the ball back here. Picking up is Carson. From Carson to Charlton to O'Shea. O'Shea brought on the ground at the halfway mark. No quarter or given asked by the four to respective sides. This time is Charlton picking up on the halfway mark. Trying to break through. Turn the ball back in field to Carson. But Nelson George have possession going around the western side. Is proven who slipped the pass away to Lumsden. Steps inside here and is brought down and bundled in the touch by Arthur Summers. Play on the western side of the Sydney Creek ground as they scum it up once again. We're free Darcy Lawler standing behind the half back Arthur Summers. As is his rival opponent Robbie Bugden. This time it's gone across to the clay. Has shot the ball along the ground there. And it's eventually picked up by Reg Gaznia. Gaznia plays the ball back this time to Ryan. Ryan gives it away to Bugden. Bugden gives an overhead pass going out wide. He's picking up the ball this time as Johnny King who's fed for the line. And King's almost in it. Gives it away to Brown. And Brown has bundled down there. Quickly tackled. But he plays the ball back. Prova makes a dash for the line. The avalanche of the western service players hurling back. And the referee Darcy Lawler. With this where he went down decides to put down the scrum. In goes the ball. Bugden shoots this pass away. Pass play has gone to Gaznia. Gaznia trying to break through with Dave Bent on the outside. Gaznia's put down tackle there by Kelvin O'Shea. Gaznia getting through his feet with the right from the right of Dummy Huff. Shilter away to Clay. Clay has support too. Couldn't send the ball out. And has brought down the goal mouth area. Mark by Chauvin. Ryan Clay upon his feet. Plays the ball back this time to Kevin Brown who shoots the pass away. But the scrum goes down. With Summers working the scrum. In goes the ball. Bugden races around the scrum base. Trying to get the pass out. Couldn't do so before being tackled from the year. Scrum it goes down. Summers works the scrum. In goes the ball. And the nice scissors movement put on here. There's Waper going nice and downfield. Shilter away this time to Johnny King. And the St George Young winner goes into score. That very nice try which was timed to perfection by Waper. Here we see the kick that has to be taken by Brian Graham. And there she goes. Take me away lovely lady. Take me away officer, kind sir. There's nothing much back home I'm gonna miss. Take, take, take me away. Take me away. Please, please, please be our love. Please be our love. Take, take, take me away. Take me away. Oh take me away. Please piano. And here we see Lumbton in possession, playing the ball back deep past Brovan. They're picking up as Kevin Ronson, George's forward, who wards off Barsey but is caught here and brought on the ground with the help of Carson and Charlton. But Martin makes the break for Western suburbs. Let's the ball go back in field here and we still have possession. I think with the back of the boot of Summons, it goes this time to Holman who tries to get through, is quickly put on the ground. From the play of the ball once again O'Shea gives it away to Charlton. Charlton the patch. From the scramble breaks up, here's Lumbton on the burst, taking play very close to the sideline, tackled by Barsey. Eddie Lumbton upon his feet, plays it back to the dummy half in Brovan, who gets his supports moving with the ball being given the full treatment here as Ryan tries to break his way through. That is effectively tackled by the Western suburbs defence. From the right play, Peter Armstrong couldn't pick him up but Brovan does behind him, gives the pass away to Raper. Raper, a real 80 minute pass put on the ground from behind. Blake Kelvin O'Shea, Johnny Raper, lays the ball back to Wilson. Wilson to Ryan. Ryan Croft then to start the goallies on and shot the pass away and starts it to Brown. Kevin Brown quickly tackled there upon his feet, plays the ball back once again to Brovan who serves a nice pass up to Raper. Raper going nicely through here, couldn't get the pass out. That plays amongst the Fords this time as Brovan picks up. A great tower of strength, the retinal many years, most number of games at St George. Couldn't play that ball quite cleanly. And a penalty here against Charlton, striking before the ball could be played. And Ryan comes up on the ready, takes this kick, charging down after the ball with the St George forward. But it's anybody's ball at the moment as you can see from here with the ball being tipped around from there to there. And eventually there was Gasneer in full speed, that was a call for a forward pass. From the strom it goes down, Buggman clicks it in, Dartsby on gets it away to Clay. From Clay taking it nicely this time as Gasneer to Brown. Brown makes the break here and the young Newcastle boy before coming to St George at Newcastle. As Lumsden alongside of him, gives the pass to Lumsden and there goes Lumsden. Corner pass is knocked down in that incident but the cut judge as you see didn't say he was out. The referee has given the try, a dead set try and a nice kick from behind by Brian Graham. Both flags are up a magnificent effort all the way. And so that's the scoreboard that has told many many tales of the Sydney Cricket round. From the strom that breaks up we see Summons kicking down Phil. This time the ball is caught nicely by Brian Graham. The justice quickly tackled there from behind. Little short kick taken there by Buggman, goes right to the hands of Western suburbs Kelvin O'Shea who plays the ball back to the ruck half in Kelly. Kelly clears the ruck with a nice pass going across to Horman. Who darts, goes around the blind side, serves it up to Summons. Summons is tackled by Clay and Dave Brown. After Summons upon his feet playing the ball back this time to the hands of Martin who couldn't pick up. And Froben made the fumble there but the referee has ruled the penalty here and the scrum goes down. Buggman works the scrum, both hookers ready to strike. And it's picked up smartly by Buggman who makes the breakdown Phil. Turned it back outside to King, King's on his merry way. Nice clean cut of a youngster young King who showed great speed there as we recall. The only go once again for this scrum was Summons getting the pass to Diamond. Diamond coming in a double by Clay and heavily dumped by Clay. Robert Clay was one of the toughest little 5-8s I've ever played against. I was very lucky that having a little bit more speed when I played 5-8 against him that year that I could get outside of him. Because when he lined you up and hit you with a good tackle, boy, you knew you were a tackle. We had one of the best pivot men in the world in playing Clay. Got here with a tough man, you had no idea. Just mention a little bit about Brian Clay's heavy tackling. Just being beside him when he hit an opponent, just the crunch of the bones and the wincing and the moans of the player and the thud of the ground. And you look down and see where the man had recovered. And a lot of people said that Clay was a vicious tackler. Clay was a very legal tackler. Let's get that point straight now because Clay would go in and hit around about the chest. And people used to complain because he was such a solid man. And I'd watch the opponent he used to hit and I used to feel sorry for them more than anything else. And Clay, when I used to talk him out, he used to say, son, he's going to do the same thing to you, so you've got to get him first. Ryman upon his feet to play this one back to Kelvin O'Shea who gets it away to Charlton. From Charlton it's gone to Holman. Holman changes direction, gives the pass back in. Fairland Western, South West have possession. This time it's Carson getting it away once again to Holman. From Holman to Parrys. Parrys out towards the hillside of the Sydney Creek ground. Get through his feet and the make by is at possession. Doing little with it at the moment as this time it's gone out once again to Patch. Who has brought down the great covered offensive from George. An notable feature right throughout the season has been the great covered offensive of this mobile pack of from George. Play on the halfway mark this time with Western Sabab's. Colony possession, plays the ball back this time. Be picking up. Played directly on the halfway mark. This time it's Charlton who gets his supports moving with a pass down to Kelly. From Kelly to Hayes who gives an overheadder. Out it goes this time to Parrys. Parrys making a break up towards the full back run. Gets downfield but Graham is there to take it. Parrys tries to get to him. But he's kept away. He has championed from Parrys. He's brought on the ground by Arthur Summon. Play on the padding to the end of the chain. St. George 25 yards mark as Wilson gets it to site. He's on through the ruck. Gives the quick pass back inside to Kevin Browner with Johnny on the spot to pick it up. Brown is quickly up and down the line. Brown is quickly up ended. In the role of dummy half is Norm Proven. Proven gives the pass away to Wilson who's racing wide of the ruck. Once again has brought down here. Good defence by Mark Patch to bring him down. Patch marks Wilson to play the ball as he plays it forward and backwards. Proven tries to get in but the whistle has gone. And a penalty here. And so Brian Graham kicks off downfield. And St. George has possession. Going nicely downfield as Young King who takes the kick. Has tripped from behind here. Let the ball spill a nice in Western South of South possession. Racing very strongly downfield this time. This parish turns the ball back outside to Barsey. Barsey moving out towards the hillside of the Sydney Creek ground. Still starting the touch line. Chasing behind and effectively brought on the ground by Brian Clay. A penalty here. Moving in nicely. Graham the ball's inside. It looks mighty in the air. And both flags are out in front. Brian Graham's costly bit again puts more points on the board for St. George. Well one huge sea of face. Still stopping at the end to see the finale of this game at the moment. 15-17 St. George and Western South of Mill. Now playing the half-way mark to kick off. Thomas Holman who boots it out towards the Western side. Going high for the ball this time. It's proven. Grover slips it away to Kevin Wynne who turns the ball back in field. Got on the ground. On the play of the ball. Cleared from the ruck by Wilson who gets his supports. Moving in the fast ground to Kevin Brown. The big fellow going straight down the centre here. It's brought down. St. George still has possession. Taking play down towards the Western side of 25 yards mark. Louis Wilson clears the ruck this time to strike the goal. He's down and shoots it back here. Grabbing the ball high was Wynne who gets his supports. Moving this time with a fast going to Raper. Raper in the head here. Bearing out towards the Western side of the creek ground. It's brought down on the half-way mark. He's marked by Fats. Wilson clears the ruck this time for the pass to Proven. Proven's brought down on the half-way mark. It's in George's half possession. Wilson on the ready here to pick up from the ruck. Dust out too. Goes around the blinds. Running down. Turns the ball back inside here to Kevin Wynne who's bundled almost into touch. Goes dangerously close to the sideline. From the ruck play here it's Proven who sends a long pass away here. And it's gone right across to the blind play. Who's grabbing well downfield as brought there. On the ground by Brown. Got the referee Darcy Lawler. Watching play close. Is a friendly kick taken by Blonde Graham. Goes well downfield. Take a nice in the goal mouth area by... No issue. Skipped the pass back and filled that in to Martin. Martin's on his way on the Western side of 25 yards mark. And still going goalward. Martin's caught. Brought on the ground here by Brown. Marked by Brown and the play of the ball. But the referee Darcy Lawler has blown the whistle as the players move off now. After this most exciting game with some George going further ahead. With the crowd over on the hillside there. As I mentioned earlier in the broadcast. They've right to the end of the season which run the curtain down for season 1961. Breville combined the old and the new. And came up with a better idea. The country kitchen. The world's first cast iron electric fry pan. With such controllable and even heat. That it can seal in the juices of a steak. Simmer a casserole. Roast a chicken. Or even poach fruit. And it's so easy to wash or wipe clean. The Breville country kitchen. A kind of old fashioned new idea. Breville. Better ideas sooner. Well there it is, 7-0 at half time and no doubt, Captain and Coach Ken Carney, who was unavailable through injury. He must have been happy with the performance of not only his team, but his acting captain Billy Wilson. On the other hand, Western suburbs are in real trouble. The experiment of Keith Holman at 5-8 instead of his usual spot at half-back wasn't successful, but the rain had started to fall and I think that Western suburbs could put on a much better performance in the wet in the second half and they must be at their wits end to find out just what they can do to stem that St George tide. He told us, he said, well it's going to be tougher this half because we had a fair go in the first half, don't rely on that fair go in the second half, expect something different and that is what we ran into in the second half. We ran into Western suburbs, continued getting the ball, trying to move the ball around in the forwards themselves. There were some really bitter exchanges in the forwards and the backs themselves were called upon to do a lot of defence and thank heavens our back line were able to sort of stand up to the onslaught of the Western suburbs players themselves. If you're goodbye in front of half time in a grand fall, let's stick there mate. On the kick off, after a safe place, has it given well downfield here by Holman, down the touch and goal area on the rain weekend of the Sydney Quaker ground. Rain had started to fall during the afternoon broadcast which made the storm a little bit murky which was brought around by the rain that tumbled down. Now we see the ball looting the grass to catch and once the picked up by some George's they go down in the scrum. Getting the pass away was Holman to Summons and running off him was Brown who gets it across field this time to Parrish from Parrish to Martin. Martin's dragged on the ground there taken, brought it on the good tackle by Brown to bring him down. On the right play it's gone across field to Summons and Summons to Parrish. Parrish gives it to Kelvin O'Shea and moving it to Kelvin O'Shea was Bugden to bring him down on the halfway mark. O'Shea plays the ball back this time, it's gone to Charlton and running off Charlton was Holman who gave it a further refill to Parrish to Martin. Martin's brought on the ground way on the halfway mark from the Sydney Quaker ground with Western Sarage in possession of all straight back this time to Carson to Charlton who made the fumble put it on the ground picking up behind him as Arthur Summons who makes the make up towards the halfway mark. Summons is still going goal. As Kelly on the outside couldn't get the pass through Kelly who couldn't pick up cleanly and our St George's have possession this time has gone across field nicely to King. He's getting the touch down as brought down by Summons and stepped in the touch. Now we see the Magpies in possession once again with Kelvin O'Shea their tall six footer being brought on the ground number 10 he plays it back to Hayes. Hayes gets the long pass out here and it's gone across field where Holman looks for support gets it to the pass going across field here to Brown. Brown's brought on the ground quickly tackled there. Marked by Provin as Brown as he plays the ball back to Holman. Holman gets it away this time out in the flash picking up as Charlton rather moving it to Ryne but Ryne was here to take Charlton ball and all. Charlton plays it back this time to Hayes who clears the luck this time with the pass going out to Summons. Charlton moves in but a good cover there but he sends the ball away to Carson. Carson traveling all downfield as quickly brought down there but from the flow the ball the Magpies find probably St George line but Summons getting his pass away to Holman. Out from Holman it's gone to O'Shea. O'Shea tackled here and that's the ball to the job with the pass going to the ball is number two who's quickly brought on the ground by Kevin Brown. Play here very close to St George line this time as Charlton clears the luck with the pass going nicely to Fetch. Fetch to Holman who changes direction here gives a flick pass to Hooker Kelly who goes straight through on the ground as tackled by Brown. Kelly marked by Wilson but he plays the ball back this time it goes under the legs of Charlton picked up by O'Shea who gives it to Hayes. Hayes is quickly tackled there ball and all thrown on the ground by Armstrong to St George Hooker. From the play the ball this time it's given to Fetch and Fetch to Holman. Holman has diamond alongside of him decides to go himself shoots the ball away this time and it's gone across field and once again Charlton is caught in possession quickly tackled by Proven. From the play the ball Mark Fetch picks up here and turns the ball back in amongst the forwards where Kelly the Western Saveds hooker is tackled by Clay. Play close from the St George line here with Western Saveds trying to break through here to open up the score. And a charge Mark Fetch who turns it away this time to Charlton. Charlton sends it further to field this time and picking up as Kelvin O'Shea. Kelvin O'Shea brought on the ground by Kevin Brown. Big O'Shea getting to his feet plays the ball back once again to Hayes. Hayes gives it a long pass here which is eventually picked up on the rebound by Brown the Western Saveds centre three quarter but the referee Darcy all the scrums him up this time. Buglen works the scrum, darts beyond the scrum gets it away to Clay. Play props nicely in field goes up past the halfway mark shoots it back inside to Gaznia. Gaznia is brought down there quickly tackled by Diamond but Gaznia upon his feet here plays the ball back to Brown. From Brown it's gone across field to Proven. Proven turns it to Ryan and Ryan's thrown on the ground here quickly tackled. Ryan heeled to the back of the boot this time it's gone to Kevin Brown out in a flash to Clay. They try to break his way through the wall of the defence of Western Saveds. He loses the ball picked up by O'Shea. O'Shea moving downfield here chase by Proven. A touch to give him proof of the ball and in doing so sends it back to Brian Graham and St George full back. Who takes the ball comes up slips gets to his feet once again. Gets away from O'Shea and caught by Diamond. Brian Graham getting to his feet with the scuffle here to see who has the ball but the referee has given a penalty here. Here's some George against Diamond from the scrum that breaks up. Here's Rayford trying to get his way through and was brought down by a good tackle by Kelvin O'Shea. Rayford plays the ball back here with the hands on the ground. Rayford is down to the ground. The ball is thrown to the ground. The referee has given a penalty here. The referee has given a penalty here. The referee has given a penalty here. The referee has given a penalty here. The referee has given a penalty here. The referee has given a penalty here. The Premiers were a hard nut to crack. Here's Louis Wilson being cheered by his teammates coming off the field of play with photographers racing across. And as you can see the crowd over on the hillside still standing by to watch this great presentation of Rugby League, the greatest game of all. Well now we see great money amongst the crowds here and it's a wonder some of the folk haven't come over the fence. There's the chairman of the Rugby League, Mr Bill Buckley out on the field of play with the Aldermen. And the Lord Mayor of Sydney to his presentation about to be taken place. The J.J. Gilton chain will be on the view very shortly. The most famous shield in Rugby League, there's Keith Holman being interviewed, being cheered off the field. And the man of the moment, Killer Carney being congratulated by his teammates coaching the man to victory after five consecutive years. Here's Brian Clay, the man of the hour. A judge by all and some who is the best player on the field that day. I was very, very pleased to be given the man of the match award or whatever you call it. In those days there was nothing financial going. But to play good in the grand final is something that everybody wants to do and I was very, very pleased that I got man of the match. And now we see the Lord Mayor, Alden Harry Jensen, Bill Buckley shaking the hands of the skipper at St George. But that's from many hard-fought games, Louis Wilson. Now coming across to pick him up are the boys of St George. He's a real hero of today and the skipper as they pick up the J.J. Gilton shield. Going around with it now is young King and Louis Wilson and the proud St George boys. Wonderful in victory and west and south of, just as equally in defeat. There's the boys really enjoying themselves as they go around to the most famous J.J. Gilton and shield. It wasn't such a runaway but they just got the breaks and that was it. But it would have been nice to finish on my career on that particular day as a winning team. But unfortunately it wasn't the way and we didn't do so. There it is, another great grand final win to St George. But Western Suburbs did improve in that second half and confined St George to only five points despite the fact that they didn't score themselves. But this was just the start of a three match grand final series between St George and Western Suburbs. They played in the grand final 61, 62 and 63 and who'll ever forget that grand final of 1963 in the mud on the Sydney cricket ground when St George won by the bare margin of eight points to three. We'll be showing that later in the series of the greatest games of all. But next week we come to that wonderful test series between Great Britain and Australia in 1962. We'll be showing you the highlights of the first, second and third test series which ended with the dominance of Great Britain over Australia because Australia next year took the ashes in England in 1963. But the highlights next week will be certainly worthwhile seeing and I'll hope you join me again for another in the series of the greatest games of all. Hi, I'm Patrick Duffy and I think it's terrific that Dallas is so popular here in Australia. One of the reasons is the story. All you have now is a feeling you're being followed. The feeling isn't much to go on. Someone is following me and I am not going to put up with it any longer. No, Sue Ellen, I am not having you follow me. You want to know why? Because I just don't give a damn. Sue Ellen receives the surprise of her life Tuesday in Dallas at the later time of 9.30 on 10. War, war, rapids! Ladies and gentlemen, Agatha Christie. On a December night in 1926, Agatha Christie, the most successful novelist of all time, vanished without trace for 11 days. What's the cause? I went to the office today, I saw her. What occurred during those lost days remains a mystery. I'm delighted to have finally met the husband of the famous Agatha Christie. Sunday, Vanessa Redgrave is Agatha in a story with all the trappings, suspensions, surprises of a classic mystery. It's like the electric chair in the United States. Only one woman could plan the perfect crime. You're in trouble. I know something is very wrong. Dustin Hoffman is the only man who could stop her. Emma Morse becomes her very special friend. We can't just let things happen to us. You are like your books on air. Always a surprise ending. A blueprint for murder. A desperate search. A race against time. Agatha, for the very first time, Sunday, 8.30, 10. Brought to you by Rank Arena Color Television. There's always something interesting happening in the restless years. See it Monday through Friday at 7. This is Star Station 10. Listen, the earth could not bury me. The sea could not smother me. I am in Calpio. I am penniless. I am banished my home. I am fugitive from justice. My hand stained with blood. I am alone, abandoned, utterly wretched. And who is it? Condemn me to this solitude? A shit of a man, marked by every vice. A third of a person should be banished by his own admission. A shill talk. A young man who seeks to liberate himself through his wanderness. You may use him any way you like. He hires himself out as a woman does, that bastard! And as for that Tartar Tony... That one... That one wears a skirt like he wasn't a born a man. A boy who played the whole in prison. Down with his clothes and face to the wall for every bull. What shame! What shame! But worse still, he is a faithless wretch, after all I've done for him. He's capable of such infamy. A pair of them laugh at me. I'm not at all well in myself. I love you, G-Tony. I love you still and will not share you with a shill talk. You are myself, my soul. Listen, you are the sun. Listen, you are the seasweeps drunken over me. You are divinest of divine and wrenched from me, cruel by a shill talk. I must find you, no matter what. But I'm not a man. I shall find you. I shall. A shill talk! A shill talk! A shill talk! He caught me, he was under my hide. Oh, he has been victim. I've been away with this little friend and he doesn't like it. He deserves all he gets. The assassin, the knight, the prowler. Like a bird who prays, strikes. Encopio, the thief, grabbing at all that glitters. While he slept, I trapped G-Tony from under him. I slid into him myself. Such is friendship, very accommodating, sweet and sullen. At first the boy would not have me pick his flower. Maybe he was sleepy. But I drew my other sword and showed it saying, See, Lucretia, here comes your trusted Tarquin. A famous actor has him now. Offered and sold to him. I sold all for a handful of coin, which is why I shall never be loved. Wondering later in the city, a good family man found me, brought me to the bath, shyly held me by the hand, there in that niche, and come, insisted. So I came. And here comes Encopio, livid, come to search me out and put his case. I shall have to fight or run. Me? Is it me you look for, Encopio? Come here. Where is G-Tony? Where is G-Tony? I sold the old glove, sold it to Bellacchio, the actor. I'm sorry, love. Ah! Roudy there, Roudy there, Roudy there. Tick, tick. And thus is punished my right arm which has failed. Tick, tick. Ah! Tick, tick. How fortunate are we each day to see new miracles from our divine seas. Demonstration, wait a minute. These are the master of all. And the hero's sweetest quiver of lust, descend to earth. Bellacchio, you will hold your peace. That boy belongs to me. He is a great and important personage. That young man is mine. You do well to give him back at once. So I said, so I know, step up your grace. Bellacchio's house is at your command. Couragio. Wait, first I want to present my family and my slaves and the dog. Get down at once. Oh, my slender plump and the only cost me thirty dinari. A suckling pig so plump would cost more today. See here, Bellacchio. Such a fine actor, famous. Having seen you perform, I know how famous you are. I do, but I repeat the pretty rascals mine. That crazy bastard cheated you. You have no authority in selling what is mine. The law will not uphold it. A shooto cheated you and me. Gittoni will come with me. I will have the rascal for forty sustenance. He's so pretty. Forty five. Perhaps sixty will be enough for him. No. A grave question I pose. I ask you citizens, who will sell his wife? He is my wife. He keeps my bedclothes warm. He is adept in the great art of theatrics. He will make you a perfect woman. Telling me when the mayor's lovely Penelope and Cornelia, such treasury prices. Bernacchi, rec the bagis. I return the sum you paid. That's perfectly fair. Gittoni then comes with me. No, never. I dare you. I shall say. Bernacchio, you go too far. You are becoming tolerable. You have been punished once for joking about Caesar. Well punished. Perhaps you want more. Shall I take away your theatre? The young man is to have his little slave. You shall have your theatre burned about your ears. No, may I say that Bernacchio... Too far, Bernacchio. You trespass upon our patience. Signor, please. For pity do not destroy my theatre. I beg you. Bernacchio submits. Bernacchio is obedient. Caesar knows that. Oh. And Borgia, Borgia, Borgia. See you.
