Welcome to Queensland's richest talent quest, Stairway to the Stars. Now in its fifth year with prizes valued at more than $30,000. As our contestants travel from all over Australia to climb the Stairway to the Stars, we introduce your host, Mr Hugh Cornish. Good evening and welcome. So nice to have you with us for our regular get together on Saturday nights at half past six, Stairway to the Stars. Let's meet the panel of judges. And I really believe it's send up night. Here she is, the John McEnroe of the... What is it? It is not what I think it is. It is a Commonwealth Games tie. It's her turn this week to borrow the Commonwealth Games tie. All right, okay. All right, meet Curie Adams in her Commonwealth Games tie. What can I say about you two? You did it last week. Hi Frank. Good evening Hugh. I like the tie, Curie. Thank you. And look at you looking debonair. I mean the school holidays are over. Very casual this week. Well all right, well off you go. Tell us how to mark. Thank you very much. This is how to mark. We, if you're staying with us home to mark along, keep a check of our scores as we go. See if you agree with us or not. Some of you must. We have 100 marks to award to each contestant. Make a total maximum of 300. Looking forward to our next qualifying final and let's look for that act tonight as Hugh Cornish introduces act one. The first act tonight, Paul is a young lady whose ambition it is to join the army. However, she wants to be an officer and I think we should throw a quick salute and introduce her, Lisa Nichols and on top of the world. Act one, Lisa Nichols. Everything I want the world to be is now coming true especially for me and the reason is clear it's because you are here you're the nearest thing to heaven that I've seen I'm on the top of the world looking down on creation and the only explanation I can find is the love that I've found ever since you've been around your love's put me at the top of the world something in the wind has learnt my name and it's telling me that things are not the same in the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze there's a pleasing sense of happiness for me there is only one wish on my mind when this day is through I hope that I will find that tomorrow will be just the same for you and me all I need will be mine if you are here I'm on the top of the world looking down on creation and the only explanation I can find is the love that I've found ever since you've been around your love's put me at the top of the world I'm on the top of the world looking down on creation and the only explanation I can find is the love that I've found ever since you've been around your love's put me at the top of the world uh nerves got in your way tonight right yes but what I can hear there to help you improve you've got to really again look at the basis of singing and that's breathing control and exercises because this will improve your voice as you get older and the more experience of course you get that helps but just at the moment are you with a teacher? uh no you're not well it would be a good idea to find someone and to help you on those basic things because the voice is there you've got a head start and you've got a good face and I'll let the other judges there's a couple of other little things so I better let them say something but thank you for your performance thank you very much okay can we talk about our one Lisa Nichols and Frank Delfoss now talks about Lisa I enjoyed your performance you've got a bright and bouncy air about you it came over in a nice vivacious manner and I see you want to be an army officer but if you do want to sing and take Kiri's advice I think that there is a lot of potential there for you because I enjoyed it very much thank you applause a singing army officer that would be rather nice wouldn't it and now I thought that you had a lovely face and I thought you smile you see that was nice because you smiled and we all felt that you were enjoying it and also your voice has a most unusual quality which reminded me a lot of a lady who had a big hit a few years ago called Liv Mason whose voice had that sort of range down there and I think for 15 that's unusual so I really think that what remains is to remember that Kiri's advice the breathing at times when you got into a certain pitch let you down a little and I think I would take lessons because I think it would be well worth it because you look good you've got confidence you have an unusual and very lovely quality in your voice make the most of it for the future good luck Lisa applause Lisa McClaws who was Act 1 in our show Judges we mark right now for Lisa's performance music and we have a 77, 78 and a 77 good marks to start with 232 for Act 1 applause we don't have a very short break in the new Cornice we'll be back to introduce Act 2 in this week's Stairway to the Stars applause every once in a while a person comes up with a great idea 10 years ago I did I decided we would give children their first haircut for free for lots of reasons but mainly because it's important that hair looks good at any age and if you do something well chances are people will remember you and come back this little girl, Benny, well big girl now, came to us for her first haircut 10 years ago and has been coming back to us ever since look how nice she looks now her hair is well cared for and she knows how to do it herself which is really important there's an old Chinese proverb if you give a man a fish you feed him for one day if you teach him how to fish you feed him for life so not only will we cut your child's hair for free but our girls will guide them and show them how to care for it themselves and we will give them a bottle of shampoo and conditioner and a beautiful brush so they will become accustomed to doing their own hair and be able to do it themselves forever Stefan Hair Fashions everyone knows that aspirin relieves headaches and fever although you should see your doctor if pain persists but aspirin comes in many different forms we make pure aspirin Bayer Aspirin for pure relief because we believe that for most people aspirin works best by itself and we should know we invented it Bayer Aspirin pure relief use only as directed We are all happy wanderers to the sea and sunny skies and when we're there we love to sing at Wanderer's Paradise Wanderer's, Wanderer's, Wanderer's, Wanderer's, Wanderer's and Wanderer's Paradise Basically it's a matter of pride. Australians see their sportsmen and women as winners I can't let them down. I've got to go faster. Push myself further. I've got to win. We will be number one again September 30th 1982, biggest event of the decade, day one of the 12 Commonwealth Games I'll be there and you can be there too with the help of one of these, the Games Ticket Planner They're available from any CBC bank or NSED office Hurry, some events are already sold out If I mention the terms portable video cassette recorder and portable video colour camera, what does that mean to you? Thank goodness this isn't a year gone quickly, the end of January already But here's a young man who's going to pass the time very pleasantly of that I'm sure His name is Geoffrey Matheson. Geoffrey has decided to sing for you tonight once, twice, three times a lady Act two, Geoff Matheson And now that we've come to the end of our rainbow There's something I must say out loud You're once, twice, three times a lady And I love you You're once, twice, three times a lady And I love you I love you When we are together The moments I cherish With every beat of my heart To touch you, to hold you To feel you, to need you There's nothing to keep us apart You're once, twice, three times a lady And I love you Yes, you're once, twice, three times a lady No, I love you I love you Our good friends from the Duty Free shops Again, very significant contributors to this year's prize list on Stay Away To The Stars Every traveller enjoys a visit to the Duty Free shop But for best value, look for a Duty Free shop by name The Downtown Duty Free shop Now at three locations in Brisbane and the Gold Coast Our two major prize winners both have $500 to spend at the Downtown Duty Free shop And remember, your money buys more and it's much more convenient to shop at the Downtown Duty Free shop Well, that's a good prize for the Duty Free shop We're going to talk now about Act Two, Geoffrey Matheson And Frank is going to comment first of all on Geoffrey's performance, Frank Well, Geoffrey, to be quite honest, you gave me quite a surprise I expected to, with your size, to have a much deeper voice Yet you've got a tenor voice, which threw me for a moment But I enjoyed your performance I feel that perhaps you, the song for me, dragged a little I felt I disagreed with the way you did the number But certainly an interesting voice and a lot of potential, so keep at it Thanks for working with us Thank you very much, Geoffrey Matheson And curious to talk about Geoffrey's performance, Act Two tonight Geoffrey, there's nothing here to say that, whether you've worked before or have you? Yes, I have played in hotels and things like that You are, so you do the odd singing job? Gig Gig, all right Gig is a word for a job The odd gig What about television? This is your first television That's right Right, well you've broken the ice, as I keep saying to other people Nerves really took over tonight You have got an interesting voice and I can see a lot of potential with it But again, a lot of hard work It comes back to control Because the voice was wavering quite a lot Your intonation was just out here and there Now it's very important if you're going to sing anywhere Especially in something like this Your first words or your entry into a song Make sure it's there, it's definite And the ending, make always sure that that's the beginning and the ending of a song What happens if you get lost? Well, it's just luck of the game But the entry is very important And I didn't pick up the first word That's just a little thing to watch If you're not learning, I would find someone to help you Because you do have the voice and the potential to do something with it All right? Well, I quite simply put that you have a unique sound But it is an uncontrolled unique sound Which is I think in a nutshell what the others were saying And I think it's an interesting voice and a very unusual sound And I hope that you will take time out perhaps to control it Because I think if you did it would be very interesting You're tall and you're a hell of a lot going for you So I think it's worth making that effort with such an unusual, unique sound that you have there So do that and good luck for the future Okay, Jeffrey Muckerson was... I have two judges we're going to mark right now And we have a 76, a 77 and a 77, 230 We're going to have a very short break And then back with Hugh Cornish and more Stay Away To The Stars I can let my mind wander to anywhere I like I can get up with the sunrise or sleep on it tonight I can unpack the weak days, don't think of them at all Just laying back on Sundays, that's what Sundays are for So here's to all the Sundays, the best day of the week The day to look for a day, things never seem so bleak When Monday's to Saturday's don't matter anymore Just laying back on Sundays, that's what Sundays are for That's what Sundays are for Just like the rest of the world, Australia is using up petrol And you and I, the ordinary motorists, are mostly responsible You and I empty two of these tanks every time industry and commerce empty one Together we empty nine every week That's why we have to conserve our petrol until alternatives are developed So start saving petrol today You'll also save money and help make a difference, a big difference Let me tell you why I spend a lot of time on Stay Away To The Stars talking about the wonderful prizes But why shouldn't I?
