I didn't say that. Thank you very much. Well, nice to be with you at 6.30 now. The rules are the same, 100 points from each judge to each contestant, total maximum of 300. The set-up will be slightly different because we're going to be with you right through the rest of this year and right through next year, but I won't bother to explain it all in detail to you because it might get a bit complicated. You'll understand it as we go and it'll still be a lot of fun and I'm sure there'll be some great talent and what's more, really great prizes. Hugh Cornish is ready to introduce Act One. Danielle Goulet is Act Number One this evening on Stairway to the Stars, a little lady who has done her own choreography to one of the popular tunes, just one of those songs. Please make a welcome. Danielle Goulet, Act One. APPLAUSE Well, this is One of those songs that you hear now and then You don't know just where and you don't know just when It's one of those songs that I wrote around then It's one of those songs that start playing again Yes, it's just one of those songs that you hear for a while And come into fashion and go on a star It's one of those songs that you think you forgot But it's one of those songs you cannot because it's One of those songs that can make you recall A ride in the springtime, a walk in the fall A day in the country, a night on the town The sun coming up or the rain coming down Or else the evening you part with, the morning you mend The love of your life you can never forget The reason is simple, the memory belongs To one of those wonderful, one of those wonderful songs MUSIC APPLAUSE Here we are, good. Danielle Goulet opened her first show of the new series And I'm sure that Kiri is waiting to tell Danielle what she thought about her performance Kiri, your turn first Well, I think Danielle is a very talented young lady And I can see you in the future as a showgirl dancer, especially in Las Vegas I hope we have the girls here, have the same sort of shows here Especially with your long legs, you've grown, you keep growing and growing, which is terrific A lot of vitality, just vocally If you're going to combine singing and dancing, just try and work on your vocal part of your act now But I think you have a lot of talent and a tremendous lot of potential APPLAUSE Thank you very much Frank, would you like to talk about Danielle? Yes, Danielle, I enjoyed your act very much I thought it was particularly nice to see a dancer working with our band for a change Not bringing along recorded music, so you get first class from that APPLAUSE And as always, a good presentation from you, I enjoyed it very much, thank you APPLAUSE Yes, it was a very confident performance and you did your own choreography, didn't you, for that? Which is good, that means that you are confident enough to do that You hold yourself and present yourself so very well, far, I think, in excess of your years How old are you now, Danielle? Eleven Eleven, yes, well, I think it's a very confident, mature performance And vocally, I think you will grow in strength in that area too But the main thing is that you present yourself so very well Congratulations for opening the show in bright style, congratulations APPLAUSE And now, judges, we mark for the first act of our first show for Danielle Goulet Marks right now, judges MUSIC And we have a 77, a 79 and a 78, a total of 234 Well done! Our second act this evening is Andrew Trinew Andrew is a vocalist and he's going to sing that lovely ballad from a film of the same name, Love Story Andrew Trinew, act two Andrew Trinew, act three Another love, another time She came into my life and made the living combined She fills my heart She fills my heart With very special things With angel songs With wild imaginings She fills my soul With so much love That anywhere I go I'm never lonely with her alone Who could be lonely? I'll reach for her hand And she'll say, she's always there How long does it last? Can love be mentioned by the hours in a day? I have no answers now but this much I can say Oh, I'll need her till the stars all burn away And she'll be there APPLAUSE Thank you, Andrew. Andrew Trinew, act number two this afternoon and the theme from Love Story Well, our good friends from the Duty Free Shop are back with us again this year in our new series on Stairway to the Stars Every traveller enjoys a visit to the Duty Free Shop but for best value, look for a Duty Free Shop by name The Downtown Duty Free Shop now at three locations in Brisbane and the Gold Coast Our two major prize winners both have $500 to spend at the Downtown Duty Free Shop and remember, your money buys more and it's much more convenient to shop at the Downtown Duty Free Shop APPLAUSE Right, we go back now to act two and we're going to talk about Andrew's performance and Frank is going to talk first of all Yes, Andrew, is this your first television appearance? Oh, no What other shows have you been on? I'm part of Gold Part of Gold, have you? Well, I think that you want to, if you intend going on into the television field you want to learn to look more directly at the camera and to present yourself more than just rely on your voice but a worthy performance Thank you for working for us APPLAUSE Thank you very much Kerry Adams, would you like to talk about acting? Andrew, would you like to be in this business? Would you like to be a singer in the... Yeah You would Well, you're 16 and you have a lot of work ahead of you Are you learning at the moment? Yeah You are Well, I feel, to help you, your voice to me is being strangled It needs to be opened You need to open it and let the... You seem to be holding it back instead of it coming out and words are running together and also you're out of meter with the band Now, if you intend to go on with the business you must listen to your teacher and not just take things for granted You should go back to exercises and really start looking into those If you want to do it, well, you have to be very, very strong but there's a lot of work there, all right? APPLAUSE Thank you very much Well, my only comment is one that you didn't look confident, Andrew and I think that's very important You looked almost embarrassed to do it for us and that always is a disadvantage So the bravado of the thing is the thing that is going to get you away There are obvious problems in pitch and I think you know that and that you're going to have to work on that and that can be corrected But once you're confident that you have everything then, of course, the way in which you show it to us and you look confident is the thing that is going to sell it There are many people earning a very good living performing who are not very great singers but they have such great confidence in pizzazz and bravado that they get away with it So I think that's the important thing to remember and I hope that in the future that will go the way that you'd like it to Thank you very much APPLAUSE OK, Act Two, Andrew Chynu and we'll mark right now, judges MUSIC And we have a 70, a 75 and a 72 making a total of 217 for Act Two APPLAUSE Well, we have plenty more acts for you some great talent in Stairway to the Stars and Hugh Cornish will be back in just a moment to introduce the next act APPLAUSE MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC This year more Australians will choose one pillow above all others a pillow that has the quality Australia demands whether it's a big pillow or small, firm or soft the others just aren't in the race Australians are made one pillow, number one, for one very simple reason quality, tontine quality sleep on it Some people suffer more from biting insects than others they're like human pincushions If you're like that, new, bite-free from records research bite-free's advanced formula jams the insect's senses keeps them away from even the most vulnerable people and it's low-irritant and pleasantly perfumed new, bite-free, the name says it all South Pine Forest Estate is a unique acreage development Where else could you find superb home sites from one and a half to two and a half acres with town water and bitumen roads and still only 18 kilometres from the city South Pine Forest Estate is close to schools and shops too in fact it's the ideal environment for a family home in a bushland setting with city amenities turn off the North Coast Highway into Albany Creek Road at Aspley drive past the Albany Creek School and Shopping Centre and look for the South Pine Forest Estate signs I'm disappointed in you I thought you knew better than to play games, Maggie I was jealous and you thought that by flaunting Mike Newman at me you'd get me to react in the same way Tonight at 7.30 there are many changes in the Young Doctors I'm sick of people butting into our lives in fact I'm sick of mucking around generally so why don't we just get married and be done with it Will the knot finally be tied in the Young Doctors? Be watching tonight's 7.30 online Our third act this evening on Stairway to the Stars is a young lady from Pomona, Jodie Willis and as is the case with act number two Jodie has taken a theme from a marvellous motion picture entitled The Way We Were, here she is, act three, Jodie Willis Memories Light the corners of my mind Misty water-coloured memories Of the way we were Scattered pictures Of the smiles we left behind Smiles we gave to one another For the way we were Can it be that it was all so simple then? Or has time rewritten every line? If we had the chance to do it all again Then tell me would we Oh could we Memories Maybe beautiful and gay What's so painful to remember? We simply choose to forget So it's the laughter We will remember Whenever we remember The way we were The way we were A very nice and sensitive performance from Jodie Willis with The Way We Were Well now to our second prize, Paul, what's our second prize? Male chauvinist, love em, love em, that's me Ha ha, Monty, male chauvinist number one Do you like me? Do you like me? I don't even think mum's in the audience tonight Come on Mr Red Blanco, come on camera, zoom in, let's give em a close up, a good look, a bow peep At Monty, ha ha, male chauvinist number one See ladies, you haven't done so badly after all have yous? That's enough, no more close ups, god only knows how I'll stand after the night I'll be lucky if I can stand at all Marriage, ha ha ha, that's for the birds Trouble is they want us fellas involved in that con, that con gruel relationship Hang five, just hang five Alright, alright, I'll be the fool guy But who's the smarty, eh? Who's the wise gal out there done that? I'll be lucky to get paid tonight after that Some satire, I'll sit here, I think, I think I'll sit here Ronnie Huddy, one of me dad names, that's me With Ronnie Cobbett and Ronnie Barker, great stuff eh, great stuff Huddy board, ha ha ha, Huddy board, hope you're not bored Cobbett and Barker, a couple of overseas pommie fellas, you know them Both show a ton of promise, I'll give them a break one of these days I'll break their bloomin' necks, keepin' a fella like me on Kangaroo Island Up here in Bajilke colony shelling peanuts Oh my god, oh my god, I think I've hit the flame and can't bear Oh, I've hit the flame and can't bear Talk about 14 chickens, I think mine are just about to go on a hatch Ha ha, thank you gentlemen, to the cheese and kisses Chop some wood for the barbies, dears, I'll pick up the summer wine Oh boy, we'll have a time, love those ladies, love ya's But love me, Monty, ha ha, my chauvinist Number one Well we're going to go back to Act 3 to Jodie Willis, The Way We Were was the song And we're going to ask Kiri first of all for her comments, Kiri Oh Jodie, that was a lovely performance, very gentle and very warm And I noticed that this is your first television appearance, is it? No, I took one in Maribyre, this is the first one here Well it was excellent and I just enjoyed your performance very much And you would like to be a professional vocalist, is that right? I think you will, good luck Thank you very much, Frank Delphos, talk about Jodie Yes Jodie, well you looked very good on camera and it was a tender interpretation I liked your interpretation of the number very much And your presentation generally was excellent, thank you I think you put thought into the song and obviously it is a song that you like, isn't it? I can tell that you like the song and it's a very pretty face on camera And that together with the good vocal work made for me a very interesting performance And a little bit of the story there that you told with the flower and the photograph It is normal, obligatory that the photograph is normally one of the judges Which does help with the marking Oh really? I thought tonight we might have got our own back on Curie but we didn't Anyway I'm joking apart, it was a lot of fun and I thought you were lovely to watch, enjoyed you very much Thank you Jodie Jodie Willis at three judges' marks right now And we have a 79 and 80 and a 79, 238 At four Ron Hardy and Ronnie Hardy I should say And Curie your turn first to talk about Ronnie Ronnie, I'm not too sure whether, I mean you've got here a comedian But what I could see you were taking a piece and sort of doing an acting it or trying to act it out And I just didn't know where you were going In all I felt the delivery was much too fast You could have slowed it down a lot But I'm still sitting here thinking exactly, I couldn't make up my mind with a comedian And I heard, what's his name, Michael Crawford? I heard some of that creep in and you were mixing it up too much for me So I think you've got to find out exactly what you want to do and then go ahead Thank you very much Frank Goffos Yes Ron, we appreciate the difficulty of trying to do comedy in three minutes flat It is hard but I also found a mixing of styles and comedy that I found hard to understand it was almost too much of everything But keep working at it because you like doing it obviously so it's in there somewhere Thank you I'd like to ask Ronnie, was that meant to be satire or are you a sort of stand-up comic? Well I've got four characters I'm trying to develop and one of them is Monty Well I think my advice for Monty, if he's going to be a comedic character You must find three or four gags that are sure of fire This is a principle I think applies to anybody Now if any routine that you're putting together, make sure it's somewhere amongst them Say three or four, particularly early in the piece if possible, where there's a sure of fire gag It doesn't have to be a new gag or an old gag but it establishes at least that it is meant to be comedy And frankly I wasn't sure, I'm not sure it was a cross between Paul Hogan and Solon Slevier and Hamlet And I wasn't sure which one it was and that's I feel because you didn't have the nucleus of a certain gag Somewhere amongst it there. Now whilst now appreciating that you were setting up a character It didn't work for me and apart from when you almost killed Hugh Gornish It was about the only laugh for me But I think that is important that if you do, try to get stronger material Because I don't think the material was strong but we do need comedy and I wish you good luck for the future Thank you very much Now Ronnie Hardy with Act Four tonight, judges marks right now And we have a 68, a 65 and a 68 from Curie, making a total of 201 for Act Four Now the Citizen Watch of course, we're very happy to say that Citizen Watches are back with us again this year And that means that each heat winner will take home the fine product, the Citizen Watch And you can get Citizen Watches at Ames the Family Jewelers, David Jones, Meyer, Queensden store At Prouds, Edmonds, at Angus & Coot and at Wallace Bishop store So look out for it by name, the Citizen Watch Short break and then back with more Stay Away To The Stars Which Ski and Ski tan will you wear this summertime? I hope so I certainly hope so See no reason why not, at this day And I know Ken will Look, you look awfully worried tonight I know it's your first television appearance and now it's all over You've broken the ice, so next time it won't be so bad You've got a very pleasant voice When next time working, to practice into a mirror Look at yourself into a mirror You worried me tonight because you were counting in between And some of them, again, you're getting yourself out of meter Right Did you know it thoroughly, the song? Oh yeah You did It was just nerves that were throwing you out Well now, as I said, you've broken the ice Work into a mirror because you've got a pleasant appearance And a very pleasant voice And there's no reason why you shouldn't stay in the country in Western field But just get a little bit more confidence, okay? Thank you very much, Kiri Yes, good quality country voice And it simply was, I think, that you weren't too sure how good you were going to be And you were very good, so you didn't have to worry, did you? But as Kiri says, it's happened now I've done that first television And you're one of the people that I really think will benefit a lot from doing the show Because you had the experience of the rehearsal, the experience of the audience And the sort of experience of having to work in front of us And that's really, I'm sure, will be good for you You had a good feel for country music Do you work around, do you? Oh, some, yeah Yeah, but you'd really like to get into it and do a little bit more Yeah, well good, look, I hope you will and I think you should Ken, thank you very much indeed APPLAUSE And that's Act 5 for Ken Peters, if I make it through December, was the song And judges, we're going to have marks right now MUSIC And we have a 75, a 78 and a 75 228 for Act 5 APPLAUSE Now, winners of our semi-finals are going to take home with them also a suit from George Simons Now, George Simons, of course, is at 46 Elizabeth Street right next to Barry and Roberts Not at 82 Elizabeth Street, as it says on the screen, but at 46 Elizabeth Street And this is the first show, so therefore that's the one 46 Elizabeth Street right next to Barry and Roberts in Brisbane And George Simons will look after you well and always gets everything right So go and see George, that'll be, I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience of looking for a good suit from the George Simons range And also we need, of course, contestants for Stairway to the Stars Now, if you'd like to be in our show, we'd love to have you The show's going right through at the Christmas recess and we won't be having a break And so we need lots more acts and you may be just the person we're looking for So if you juggle or play the gum leaf or sing or juggle, stand on your head or do anything you like Get in touch with our producer, Russell Stubbins Either ring Channel 9 during office hours or ring Starcast Productions on the Gold Coast And we will get you on a Stairway to the Stars Short break and Hugh Cornish will be back APPLAUSE MUSIC Wherever you see your shadow, the sun can burn, dry out and damage your skin A danger that doesn't stop at the water's edge Which is why Roche created water-resistant AquaSun It's the only suntan lotion with guanine that allows you to tan without burning And two vital moisturisers So now you get a beautiful tan whether you're in or out of the water AquaSun, because you shouldn't risk your skin to get a great tan Ever since the invention of twin-blade razors, people have been inventing ways to clean them But Chic Ultra, only Chic Ultra has solved the problem with push-clean blades on the Ultra Pivoting Head Razor After a smooth shave from Ultra's pivoting head, Ultra's push-clean bar ejects the soap and whiskers to be washed away Ultra gives you a clean blade every time Chic Ultra, all the advantages of pivoting head shaving plus a clean blade every time Saco, losing time with Sherylat Your timing's perfect with Saco Why break your back pulling weeds when you can starve them to death with Xero Weed Spray Xero is quickly absorbed through the leaves and stops the weed from feeding so that it starves to death in about 10 days Best of all, Xero acts only on the weed, does not affect the soil and leaves no residue Try Xero now and give weeding the old heave-ho Well it's a very happy show so far this evening on Stairway to the Stars, the first of our new series And I'd like you now to meet one of the very happy people, this is Gwen Gordon Gwen, you're a grandmother? They will look after you very well. Okey-dokey, we are now with Act 6 with Gwen Gordon. We'll meet again with the lovely song and it's Frank to comment first of all on Gwen's performance. Frank? Gwen, I enjoyed your performance. I found a very free and easy style, you looked very comfortable. I'd like to congratulate you on your dress too. I think it looks perfect. It's very suitable and a nice performance. Thank you. Thank you very much, Frank. First of all I'd like to ask Gwen, were you a singer before you became a grandmother? Or you've just enjoyed it throughout the years? Well I haven't sung, I never thought of even singing until my children left home, grew up and left home. Then I wanted to do something different, which I did. Well, you certainly sing very well and I thought you were delightful and it's good to hear the verses of those standards. I was going to say that. Oh, sorry. I've never heard the verse before. I've never heard the verse before. Two verses, lovely to hear the verse. Sorry. No, as I said I thought you were delightful. Do you work? I mean, are you working? I have my own little shop with my daughter. Oh, I mean singing-wise. Oh no, no, just through charity. Do you? Well I'm sure you give a lot of people, well, really pleasant memories and enjoyment because I thought you were very, very good. Thank you. Yes, thank you very much. I hope the takings at the shop will shoot up after this performance and you can sing your way, you know, would you like some lollipops? And do all that bit. Because I thought you were lovely and that's nice, the relaxed performance, nostalgic of course, bringing back memories of Dame Vierolin and the song that she made, so very famous. A brand new series of WKRP in Cincinnati Monday at 8 o'clock. MUSIC SIRENS MUSIC You see, Graham was on a driving holiday when I was coming down from Perth. That's how we met. You know about Eve and his little daughter Jessica? Yes. I also know how lonely and unhappy he's been. So last night and lunchtime today, you mean you were making a stand, hoping that he'd commit himself openly? Yes, I know it was stupid of me and I am sorry if I embarrassed you. Maggie, you are getting into such a complicated situation here. I only know it's what I want. That's why I'm meeting Graham now so we can talk it over properly. I see. I'm glad it's out in the open. You've been very kind to me. I won't be late. MUSIC Sorry I'm late. Have you been waiting long? I was here at the time we arranged. You're angry with me, aren't you? I'm disappointed in you. I thought you knew better than to play games, Maggie. I was jealous. And you thought that by flaunting Mike Newman at me, you'd get me to react in the same way? I can assure you I won't. I thought we had a better understanding than that. You're making it sound as though we're at work and I'm getting another lecture. Well, I am senior to you at work and you have to remember that. I don't enjoy pulling you into line in front of other people. You know that. So you shouldn't put me in a position where I have to. I know. But it's awfully hard having to keep everything so secret. At the moment, we have no choice. Helen knows. She's the last person I want you to talk to about it. Graham, it's difficult enough at work, but at home with Helen, it's impossible. I'm sneaking out, I'm taking phone calls. She's not a fool. She guessed. I've put you in an impossible position. It's asking too much. What are you saying? That you want to call it off? That's the last thing I want. Well, it's the last thing I want, too. Look, I promise to be more careful.
