One of Turkey's most celebrated film directors was the late Yilmaz Güne, who won the Golden Palm for his film Yol at the 1982 Cannes Festival. Güne died in Paris in 1984. He had lived in exile there for three years following his escape from a Turkish prison, and it was from prison that he directed many of his most famous films. Tonight's film, Hope, is described by Güne as containing autobiographical elements. It's a film of hope and hopelessness, gullibility and confusion, and Variety magazine has called it a modern minor classic. Güne's reputation continues to grow as his films become better known.
