The legend of Camelot, King Arthur and the greatest wizard ever. A magical special event, Merlin begins Sunday. I stand before you today, the representative of a family in grief. In a country in mourning, before a world in shock. I'm always somebody who's really guarded their privacy and that thought of having to speak was a bit daunting. I didn't know what I was going to say at all. And then I woke up on the Wednesday morning between the death and the funeral at about 4.30 in the morning and I just got up and I wrote it. And I finished it about an hour and a half later and it stood. That's what I read out. What did you feel like as you were about to step up there? Well, just before I had to go up, I think it was the Prime Minister read a lesson, then Elton John performed. And actually luckily I'd heard him rehearse the day before so I was prepared for how emotional it would be. And then I walked up there and started to speak. And I wasn't so sure and I was just talking and I tripped up over a word quite early on. And then it was almost like I totally relaxed then because it was almost like a voice said, No, you've got something to say, say it. And that was it. Just did it. And it was not a problem to deliver it. I didn't think about the audience and how many people were there or whatever. I just read it and did it. Towards the end it got very difficult. When I started to talk to William and Harry over their mother's coffin, I mean, that was very, very upsetting. And I only just made it to the end of the speech. I think another paragraph and I would have been completely inaudible. On behalf of your mother and sisters, I pledge that we, your blood family, will do all we can to continue the imaginative and loving way in which you are steering these two exceptional young men. So that their souls are not simply immersed by duty and tradition, but can sing openly as you planned. We fully respect the heritage into which they have both been born and will always respect and encourage them in their royal role. But we, like you, recognise the need for them to experience as many different aspects of life as possible. To arm them spiritually and emotionally for the years ahead. You talked about, you know, how you pledged that you, her blood family, would do everything you could to help William and Harry's souls to sing, I think you said, rather than being immersed in duty and tradition. Now, I mean, that's a hard blow to take when you're actually sitting there listening to that as Prince Charles was. I mean, the implication that he couldn't help their souls to sing. Really, I was picking up on the magic of Diana. I'm not, this was a tribute to Diana, it was a eulogy. I wasn't taking any swipes at anyone. But you can't say immersed in duty and tradition without realising that that is loaded. I mean, you're a wordsmith, you understand what words mean, what their implications are. Well, I don't back down from the words at all, but what I'm saying is that Diana brought to their lives something quite different and wonderful. And I was just offering in any way that her family, her surviving family, could help to perpetuate that. I was offering it to them. By the time you stepped out that abbey, you were being hailed on the one hand as a national hero and on the other as a catalyst that might bring down the monarchy. Right, well, obviously I was unaware of that. Was it a complete shock to you what was made of that speech? Look, I'm pleased that I said what I said for Diana. And judging by the letters I got from the public, I had 200,000 letters. People were in agreement that it needed to be said. But you must have known that this was dynamite, some of the things you were saying. Oh, no, I didn't. You must have known. No, not at all. Well, you must be naive then. No, not naive. I just wrote what I felt to be honestly true. You know, I support the Queen enormously, but individual members of the royal family I don't actually know at all well. So it's, although I respect their position and everything, I don't, I genuinely don't know them, so I can't have a strong opinion. The only two members of the royal family who I really know on a level of any significance are my nephews and certainly not going to sit here and criticise their relatives. The point is that they can be in no doubt that I am sincere in my wish to help them in any way they want. And, you know, they'll be at an age soon where they'll do their own thing and see whoever they want to see. And, you know, if I'm some, if they see me as some sort of interfering uncle they don't want to see, I'm sure they'll make it very clear. How have they been this year? Are they okay? Well, I mean, they're very special boys, as I said in my tribute, and I think they've done remarkably well. But beyond that, I mean, I think it would be betraying confidences to say anything else, but I think this country is extremely lucky to have them as two princes. They're fantastic boys. In fact, William's a man now, really. There is no doubt that she was looking for a new direction in her life at this time. She talked endlessly of getting away from England, mainly because of the treatment that she received at the hands of the newspapers. I don't think she ever understood why her genuinely good intentions were sneered at by the media, why there appeared to be a permanent quest on their behalf to bring her down. It is baffling. My own and only explanation is that genuine goodness is threatening to those at the opposite end of the moral spectrum. It is a point to remember that of all the ironies about Diana, perhaps the greatest was this. A girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of the modern age. Your remarks about the press hounds who turned her into the most hunted person on earth, are you still bitter about the way you feel they treated her? Well, I don't know if bitter is the right word. I mean, it's just devastating when you're somebody's brother to see them being chewed up by anything. And it was my duty that day to point out this very significant factor in her life which she had found incredibly hard to deal with. When I spoke about her tearful despair, I mean, that is what we were dealing with here. And just complete loss of hope. And I think that the press really did hurt her in her life, yeah, really hurt her. To an extent which you or I would find illogical because we should, we would have thought she could rise above it, but she did have this insecurity which made her very vulnerable to the press. She learned to play the media game though, didn't she? She was able to exploit the media for her own ends. I think if you're faced with a sort of juggernaut like the media, you can either be squashed by it or you can try and harness some of its power. And I think she harnessed it for the good of her causes, yes, and I think that's a good thing. Elsewhere in the speech you talked about your gratitude to God for taking Diane at her most beautiful and radiant and when she had joy in her private life. Now, were you aware of the nature of her relationship with Dodi Fayed? I think we all know what the early stages of a relationship are like. They're very heady and very exciting. And tragically for both of them, they never got beyond that heady stage. So speculation as to what might have happened or what might not have happened is completely ridiculous in my view. Certainly none of my family are aware of any plans for them to have got married. But did you perceive her to be happier at that stage of her life than she'd been for a while? Actually, I'd found her to be very happy in herself in March when she came to stay with me in Cape Town, and she wasn't seeing him then. I think she'd reached a mature stage of her life where she got certain things in perspective, knew who she was, and I think that she'd just sort of levelled out, which is quite normal in someone who's 35, 36, whatever. Diana's lack of self-esteem, which she talked about herself quite a lot. What do you feel was the root of that? I don't know. I don't know whether it was something she was born with or whether it was something that developed inside of her. But I think it's rather wonderful in a way that somebody who had so much still doubted themselves. I wouldn't see it necessarily just as a weakness. I think it's a fascinating part of her psychological makeup, really. This beautiful, funny, intelligent, spontaneous, giving woman wasn't sure about herself. And actually, we're all like that, aren't we? I mean, nobody's that confident about themselves. And I think it shows great courage that she could face up to that. Everyone puts on their own mask in the world, and she wasn't prepared to sort of kid herself, really. Coming up, a series of special reports as we mark the anniversary of the end of the Great War and late arrest an Adelaide digger who paid the ultimate sacrifice. The power steering made light work in the tight spots, and boy, could she drive. This was one quick lady. The fuel-injected 2.5-liter quad-cam V6 had power to spare. Off-road, it was something else. And at 29950, she'd definitely come out in front. This Gran Vitara V6 sure is the new force in four-wheel drives. Four! It's the AGT. It just did four bucks. Need to keep up with the stock market? It's hard being all alone I guess. But I can't let it go like that. On a carat affair, Destination Australia. How do we rate in the service stakes? Not as in your face as the Americans. What do tourists really think of us? Not quick, not friendly. Tomorrow at 6.30. You've had quite a hammering in the press in the last few months. You descended from being this great hero to villain virtually. Has that been difficult to cope with? Well, I had one tabloid editor rang my mother during my divorce, which sadly I'm not allowed to talk about because I'm bound to confidentiality. But he rang during that time and my mother was in tears at the unfair treatment that she perceived I was getting in the papers. And she said, why do you do this to my son? And this tabloid editor said to her, because I'll never forgive him. When he made his speech, my mother cried with shame at my profession, his profession being tabloid journalism. So I'm not being forgiven for that. And then my mother said, well, what are you going to do to him next? And he said, whatever his plans for the house opening, I don't care what they are, I'm going to rubbish them. Part of the perception is that you are not above using the media when it suits you. And therefore you're a hypocrite because you lay into them at other times. I don't go along with that. I mean, I have done a spread on the house, for instance, yes, which the money went to the maintenance of the house. You're talking to me here today? I mean, you know, arguably, you know, you're exploiting it for your own ends. I'm not really exploiting it. I'm taking the opportunity to put my side. I think it would be unreasonable to expect me to just take everything on the chin day after day. And really the point of me talking to you today is to give people an idea of really what is going on here, the ideas behind this exhibition to the memory of my sister. And it's a chance for you to put across some of the points that people might want to ask me because I don't give interviews. The staff on this estate are extremely loyal to my family, and she really couldn't be in better hands. The crucifix above the temple, what, next to where Diana's buried, the old carpenter who's retired came out of retirement because he wanted to do something. And he was a very good man. He was a very good man. He was a very good man. He was a very good man. He was a very good man. The old carpenter who was retired came out of retirement because he wanted to do the crucifix on top of it for Diana. The forester, we were going to let some contractors come in and plant these trees. But then the head forester said, no, I've been here 34 years. This is my job. You're doing the traditional way of doing it. Yes, grandfather's touch. I know, he wouldn't have allowed anything else. It's a trick. However tastefully you do it, you're going to create a tourist attraction. You're creating a sort of tasteful Graceland. I'm not creating a tourist attraction. The tourists are going to come anyway if we've done nothing. What I've done is limit the number of tourists who can come. I mean, certainly if I was interested in making money or whatever, I don't think I'd be a very good businessman if I just stuck to 60 days out of 365 as being open. But you're making it hugely more attractive by making such a beautiful exhibition. I mean, it is. It's extraordinarily moving. But it doesn't matter how much more attractive I'm making it because it's still the same number of people who are coming in. There's two and a half thousand people a day for 60 days because we know we can cope with that in a dignified manner. See, people say he's a shrewd businessman. He must have done his sums. He must know that this is going to set Altrop up for the future. Well, it's not. On the figures I've got, we're going to make quite a big loss this first year. But I don't mind that. We're still going to give a donation to the Memorial Fund. How much? Well, we're going to put a minimum of 10% of the ticket sale will go there this year. Well, there's no profit to cover that. That's coming straight out of my pocket, I assume. We hope that we'll be making a profit for the Memorial Fund in the second year and the third year onwards. But I mean, I'm producing audited accounts at the end of this year to show exactly how much has been spent, where it's gone. And, you know, this is for public consumption. I think people have lost track of this. I mean, can you imagine anybody making a profit out of their brother or sister's death? It's so low, it's inconceivable. I don't know anyone who would. But because the press can present Diana as a public figure rather than as my sister, they can make it sort of a possible accusation. Whereas, of course, it's completely out of the question. I will never profit from Diana's death. What about the concert? Was that not a bit of a tacky idea, especially so close to her grave? It was not that close to her grave. This park is the size of Monaco, so the point is that you can have something in the park and it's not actually sort of tripping over something else. I think the idea of a concert is entirely suitable. Diana loved her music. And I mean, every penny is going to go to the Memorial Fund, and I think it's entirely suitable, actually. Let me ask you about the Diana Memorial Fund. What are your main objections to what's happening there? There's been no huge rift, but I wrote on behalf of my mother and my sister Jane, and the three of us were concerned that the Fund should remember that probably its prime objective is to take in the money that people have given or raised for it and then to give it out. The problem that we three had was the Fund and therefore Diana's name being tied up with anything that was overly commercial. And I think that it probably was a mistake to put her name on margarine tubs and scratch cards. And do you think there should be a date at which it will be terminated? Yes. I don't even want to say when, but... And what then happens to your profits from here if you've got no Fund? Oh, well, I give them to other charities, or even the same charities, but not via the Fund. There were reports at the time that Prince William shared your unease. Was that true? Well, I... it's difficult. I really wouldn't want to betray William's confidence, but I think I can say that he wasn't entirely unsupportive. Since Diana's death there's been a wave of conspiracy theories. Are you in any doubt in your own mind that it was anything but an accident? Yeah, I'm not a believer in the conspiracy theories. And I think they're particularly unfortunate in that it just drags everything over and over again for the boys more than anyone. I mean, it's desperate for them. I mean, it's not much fun for the rest of my family either. But I know everyone always wants a different angle on this or that, and people are sure this must have happened or that didn't happen. Well, I've seen absolutely no evidence that there's any sort of conspiracy. And I'd have thought that conspiring to kill people in a very solid car in a tunnel... I mean, no, it just doesn't make sense to me at all. There'd be easier ways to do it if you were going to do it. And I've seen absolutely no evidence that it was anything other than an accident. What about the claims that she uttered some last words before she died? There are no last words. There's absolutely no possibility of there having been last words. The injuries she received were such that it was just impossible for her to have uttered anything. And the French doctors are adamant on that. And my family and I believe them when they say that. It's difficult, though, when people make these claims. It's very upsetting that people have tried to suggest otherwise. Because, again, it's so... I mean, it's baffling. Why would anyone want to do that, really? I mean, pretend somebody said something when they're supposedly dying. I mean, it's monstrous, really, isn't it? Thursday, the newest way to enjoy Uluru. We're told that nearly a year after her death, she continues to exert this amazing hold on the public imagination. But there are already beginnings to be signs of a backlash. People saying they're fed up seeing her pictures still in the newspapers. There's academics coming out and saying she's a symbol of a self-indulgent and muddled Britain. Are you concerned at that? Are you concerned about how history in the end will see Diana? I don't think anything that anyone says or does now is going to alter the impact she had. And the overwhelming impact was a positive one. When she died, she would have had no idea how universal the impact of her death would be. It's an extraordinary thing that she probably didn't... She had no concept of how popular she was or what she meant to people. Although every day that she went to one of her engagements or every time she opened her mailbag, she would have been told about what people really felt about her. And it's interesting, the amount of letters I've had from members of the public who said, I wish when she was alive I'd told her what I really thought of her, but I never got round to it. And it's very sad that, you know. Has it changed you? Um, well I think I'm much more relaxed now. I used to really mind about things the whole time and I've got a much more balanced view of life, I think. I find it very difficult talking about Diana sometimes, and I find that the smallest thing will set me off crying or whatever. But overall it's probably made me a more thoughtful person, I think. And you miss her? Yeah, very much. She's... I mean, that laugh. I was watching one of the videotapes we're showing in the museum with someone, and there's this long shot in slow motion of her laughing and laughing in a boat with the boys at an amusement park. And all that silent, I could really hear the laugh. And it was such an intrinsic part of her. It really was a joyous laugh. And of course I'll never hear that again. We hope you enjoyed the first part of Diana's birthday tribute. And right after the break we'll return to Althorpe where Cliff Richard, Christa Berg and Diana's friends celebrate her life in concert. Thank you. I'd like to start by welcoming you all to Althorpe, which has been my family's home for nearly 500 years. This strikes me as being exactly the right place to celebrate my late sister's life. I can remember her as a teenager here, practicing her tap dancing in the hall, her ballet in the gardens outside, and her piano playing in the grand saloon downstairs. She was someone who loved her music of all kinds. Indeed, it would be fair to say that to Diana, music was her passion. So a concert's the appropriate way for us, her family, to celebrate Diana's life, 10 months after we started to mourn her death. It's a pleasure to share this musical tribute with you all as we celebrate Diana's life. Truly a life worth celebrating. I'm born in Ardo, I'm born in the world of the old, But to change my Ardo, I must change my Ardo, I must change my Ardo, I must change my Ardo, I must change my Ardo, I must change my Ardo, Princess Diana did more for the international fashion industry than any one of her generation. She was glamorous, but as London designer Amanda Wakely recalls, anything but grand. One of the girls just sort of opened the door casually, and there was Diana standing on the doorstep being incredibly shy and apologetic about arriving early. I don't think fashion was a complete passion with her. I think she thought it was very much part of what she was expected to do. She once said, you know, for her, getting dressed was like being the bride every day of the week, and the pressure of that must be incredible. Suddenly, she had to be this fashion icon, and so I think she said, right, engagement, I need a smart suit, engagement photos in the highlands, I must be in tweeds. Diana used to mention the wedding dress to me. She had to be royal, fill a huge cathedral with a train, and she needed to make a big statement. When she sold her dresses, I don't think it was a wrench for her to get rid of all this sort of royal armor. I think she was ready to move on. Towards the end, she was wearing very, very simple, sublimely cut sheath dresses, which you need to have a personality to wear, and she just made those dresses look amazing. Diana's death was a huge blow to the fashion industry. She was a global celebrity, the most photographed woman in the world, and undoubtedly, if she was photographed wearing one of your suits or dresses, it didn't hurt sales. But apart from that, I think she was a friend to all of us. When the darkness comes, then for then all peace was told. Who will you lay down your hand when you hear the sound of man's death? As singer-songwriter Krister Berg recalls, music played a major role in the life of Princess Diana. I suppose one thing that really distinguished her was the fact she loved pop music. Amongst her favourites were Brian Adams, who was a personal fan, and of course Elton John, and a band that I toured many, many years with, Supertramp. She was a person who enjoyed melody in all sorts of shapes and forms. She would listen to music in her car, on her Walkman, and obviously in her home. I think it was a private thing very much for her, and it gave her comfort and strength. One of the things that Princess Diana brought to our era was the softening of the bridge between royalty and the public, and she was brilliant at it, I think made pop music more accessible to her side of the river, and made people understand that the royals were accessible as well, and were genuine, and had emotion. This was a vibrant woman, a woman with passion in her heart, and definitely a lady who loved to dance. I believe her choice in music really reflected the person she really was, because much of it predated being a royal, and becoming royal meant, I think, she had to suppress a lot of her natural gaiety and joyfulness. Nevertheless, through music, she could really release this inner person. And I think we also saw it in later years when she was freed from the HRH title, and she became herself again, a natural, joyful, free-spirited girl. I've never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight, I've never seen you shine so bright, mmm I've never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance, they're looking for a little romance, given half a chance And I have never seen that dress you wear, or the high lights in your head and the catch-dives I have been blind, the lady in red Is dancing with me, she's a-shin, there's nobody here It's just you and me, it's where I wanna be, but I hardly know This beauty by my side, I'll never forget, the way you looked tonight I've never seen you loving so gorgeous as you did tonight, I've never seen you shine so bright, you were amazing I've never seen so many people want to be there by your side, and when you turned to me and smiled, you took my breath away And I have never had such a feeling, such a feeling of complete and utter love, as I do tonight, the lady in red Is dancing with me, she's a-shin, there's nobody here It's where I wanna be, but I hardly know This beauty by my side, I'll never forget The way you looked tonight, I never will forget The way you looked tonight, lady in red Lady in red, my lady in red Play the Ferryman It was late at night on the open road, speeding like a man on the run A lifetime spent preparing for the journey He is closer now and the search is on, reading from a map in the mind Yes, there's the Ragged Hill and there's the boat on the river And when the rain came down, he heard a wild dog howl There are voices in the night, don't do it, voices out of sight, don't do it Too many men have failed in love, whatever you do Don't pay the ferryman, don't even fix the price, don't pay the ferryman until he gets you to the other side And the road he missed, then he got on board, now there'll be no turning back He wear that hooded whole mind, and then the lightning flashed and the thunder roared And people calling out his name's name's name, and dancing bones that jab at an animal on the water And then the ferryman said, there is trouble ahead So you must pay me now, you must pay me now, still that voice can't prove me out, whatever you do Don't pay the ferryman, don't even fix the price, don't pay the ferryman until he gets you to the other side Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Don't pay the ferryman, don't even fix the price, don't pay the ferryman until he gets you to the other side Don't pay the ferryman, don't even fix the price, don't pay the ferryman until he gets you to the other side Don't pay the ferryman, don't even fix the price, don't pay the ferryman until he gets you to the other side Don't pay the ferryman Don't pay the ferryman Don't pay the ferryman Big pond, big possibilities The ultimate million dollar stock take sale is on now Hundreds of high efficiency wood heaters must be sold Radiance from $4.99, Fan Force Supreme, slash to $9.99 Save hundreds of dollars buying direct from the manufacturer The ultimate stock take sale, Blair Athol, Holden Hill, Gawler or Murray Bridge People everywhere are discovering new Nestle fruit yoghurt This season Nestle has created a delicious black cherry yoghurt full of dairy goodness for you to enjoy Pick a new Nestle fruit yoghurt today Powerful VTEC, precise A-T-T-S, race car style sports shift, breathtaking technology that makes prelude, so breathtaking to drive Honda Prelude, what an idea To earn 50% more Anset Australia frequent flyer points with every dollar spent Just use your diners club card You can earn points toward flight rewards over lunch or dinner Or by taking a short taxi trip across town Or just by picking up something special for that special someone It's all very simple Join diners club now and start earning flight rewards faster Need to save some money? On a Tuesday only at the Kmart stock take sale you can get 20% off auto accessories We think the Kmart stock take sale is just what you need Princess Diana famously gave her support to all sorts of charities According to the editor of Majesty magazine, Diana had a special heart for this work When Diana was still a school girl she used to go and help old people at an old people's home nearby The proprietor of the home taught her a lesson that was to be invaluable all her life She said, always bring yourself down to the level of a sick person or a child, so kneel and touch them You felt that she was supporting you and loving you, so people loved her in a way that they'd never felt for anyone else Sometimes she'd shake their hand to get a sort of sticky sweet in her hand And she could deal with all that in a way that a lot of people can't Diana was almost undoubtedly the best fundraiser in the world I think she manipulated the media to try and make them understand what she was about So for instance if she went to an AIDS concert she would wear the red ribbon and she would know it created a photo opportunity She was bombarded by charities, she became immersed by it, it sort of was too much So that's when she made the decision that she would rather concentrate on six or eight rather than over a hundred Because she just simply couldn't give them enough time Often when she got home at night she was exhausted and tearful and suddenly there she was all alone having been fated all day And she came back to this empty home and felt very sad But in the end it was her main focus and she was very proud of the attention she'd managed to bring to the situation in Angola So you have this beautiful woman and this maimed child and there is no stronger image, it's almost religious I don't think anyone can fill the gap she's left, we've never had anyone like Diana before and I don't think we'll ever have anyone like her again Thank you all very much indeed, may I wish you all a very very good evening and say thanks to all of you for joining all of us tonight To celebrate and pay tribute to a beautiful compassionate woman, it's a fantastic evening I think and I hope that you've enjoyed it Your coming here is going to ensure that somebody on this planet who needs help will get it so thank you ever so much on behalf of all of us I got asked if I would like to participate in the album that was the tribute to Diana and there was no way I was going to miss the opportunity I happen to have had in my grasp a song which we recorded and it is featured on the album and it's this one, it's called All That Matters The time will shatter The only treasure in the life we live Is in the measure of the love we give All that matters in the end will be The love in you and the love in me It's all that matters Every heart must change its shape To put the space that a lifetime makes Some regrets and some mistakes We touch happiness We can't hold her Feelings come and disappear I've known the laughter, I've cried those tears I should know better after all these years But I'm no wiser I'm just older The love in you and the love in me Is all that matters All the rest is just vanity The time will shatter The only treasure in the life we live Is in the measure of the love we give All that matters in the end will be The love in you and the love in me Oh, it's all that matters It's all that matters Love is the treasure It's all a question of priority We got so much that we just don't need If it ain't got love then it's a luxury We can learn to live without it The love in you and the love in me Is all that matters All the rest is just vanity The time will shatter It's all that matters It's all that matters You and the love in me Oh, it's all that matters The rest is just vanity The time will shatter The only thing you and the love in me Is all that matters All the rest is just vanity The time will shatter It's all that matters We're all going on a summer holiday No more working for a week or two A fun and laughter on a summer holiday No more worries, no need of you All the way go to We're going when the sun shines brightly We're going when the sea is blue We've seen it in the movies Now I see it, it's true Everybody has a summer holiday Doing things they always wanted to So we're going on a summer holiday To make our dreams come true No need of you We're going when the sun shines brightly We're going when the sea is blue We've seen it in the movies Now I see it, it's true Everybody has a summer holiday Doing things they always wanted to So we're going on a summer holiday To make our dreams come true For me and you All we go to It's a dream come true For me and you We'll return to all folk in just a moment With a band whose name is synonymous With the best of British pop of the 80s and 90s Duran Duran How long's it gonna be Before you have another Hungry Jack's Bacon Double Cheeseburger Deluxe? In how many different ways? I thought a lot of Princess Diana I thought she's done a lot of good for the country She was a special princess in Wales and England And everywhere else I think Americans thought Diana was fabulous We all thought she was wonderful She just, on two weeks notice Hopped on a plane, came And her presence of course revived the hospital If you'd seen her walking into a room With a number of old people all around And she would pick out probably the oldest person in the room And probably in a way to our eyes, to camera's eyes Almost the least attractive and she would go there The hand would be into that older hand And she would form a link That no other person in my experience has been able to do She must have been a very caring person about other people Although she was rich she understood the poor people's needs She just came bursting through the door And I sort of said, gosh, shouldn't I curtsy or do something And she said absolutely not I loved formality and just came over and gave me a big hug Well she's special because she brings light to the world About all the sadness that's going on in the world I had the honor of hosting her She was undoubtedly one of the best ambassadors of Great Britain People were her priority People mattered most My immaculate dream Made breath and skin I've been waiting for you Signed with a whole tattoo Happy birthday to you Whilst we ate and drank for you Can't ever keep the fun from you Can't ever keep the fun from your heart Oh, I can't believe you're taking my heart To pieces Oh, it'll take a little time It might take a little cry To come undone Now we've tried to stay blind To the holes and fear outside Hey child, stay wild as a wind And blow me into pride Who do you think? Who do you love? When you come undone Who do you think? Who do you love? When you come undone Word, giving me deja vu Like a radio tune I swear I heard Chills, is it something real? Or the magic I'm believing On your face? Can't ever keep the fun from you Can't ever keep the fun from your heart Oh, I can't believe you're taking my heart To pieces Oh, it'll take a little time It might take a little cry To come undone Now we've tried to stay blind To the holes and fear outside Hey child, stay wild as a wind And blow me into pride Who do you think? Who do you love? When you come undone Who do you think? Who do you love? When you come undone Who do you think? Who do you love? When you come undone Can't ever keep the fun from your heart Oh, I can't believe you're taking my heart Who do you love? Can't ever keep the fun from your heart Who do you love? Martina Hingis took out Narancia Sanchez Vicario. That one just completed over on Centre Court. We're on Court One for this struggle with Celis and Zvereva. Zvereva led early. 30-15. Celis has come back. It's now 30-15. Zvereva is serving to get to 6-0. Just mentioned before you folks in Adelaide joined us that following this match is Sampras and Philopousis. Matches all started earlier today. 11 o'clock on the outside courts. Noon on Centre Court and Court One because of the bad weather we've had throughout the championships. Not far behind though. Again just trying to casually play that one without any purpose. Just trying to get it deep and not much on it. She didn't attack that at 30-15. You'd think she'd have a crack at that to get to 40-15. Well she's done that pretty successfully actually, Zvereva. Not really putting much on that forehand but getting it very deep. In trouble now at 30-all and a second serve. There's the slice that has been successful on that occasion. It's the tape. It's in his crowded number one court behind Sellers. It's now set point. That just shows the doubles expertise of Zvereva. Played the drop shot and followed it in which is the right play. Well as you said Fred, Monica herself commented the fact that Zvereva has some of the best hands in the game. She really does. She's got those soft hands. She's got great touch. Juice. Good approach because of the slice. When that slice gets there as it did it got into the grass and kept very low. That skidded through. At that stage Sellers had to jab at the ball. Just caught a little bit late. That's why it missed the sideline barely. So from a set point it is now a game point to try to take this into a tie break. The tape. So Zvereva survives a set point. Now it's six to score. Into the tie break. First player to reach seven with a margin of two will win the tie breaker. One zero for Ms. Sellers. That's a better point from Sellers. She was in control from start to finish and she's had a hard time dictating play out here because Zvereva has done a very good job of mixing up the speed and not giving Sellers a lot of pace to work with. Sellers is up to 22 unforced errors. Only 14 for Zvereva. Sellers has won nine Grand Slam singles titles. This is the only one that's eluded the grass courts at Wimbledon. They've been a bit quick for her. One. There was a span in Sellers' career before the stabbing in 93 where she won every Grand Slam she played in, which was seven consecutive Grand Slams. She missed the 91 Wimbledon. She basically won seven of the eight that were played. That was all before she was 19 years old. Zvereva has been to the quarterfinals here four times. This is the fourth time. First time since 93 though. You can see if Sellers can get inside this baseline. You see how she's well inside the court, takes it very early. Zvereva just doesn't have time to track it down. She has spent more time really in this match, pushed back behind the baseline. Double fault, not a good time. Zvereva reached a career high singles ranking of number five in the world way back in 1989. She's now ranked number 22. She finds the line that time. She missed that one, who allows Zvereva to get the six all down the line. That's a tough shot because it's pretty flat and it's going over the high part of the net. And so she gives it a bit more room on that occasion and right into the corner. Three two Sellers. Three all. The change ends. I think he's going to walk around the other side. I often see that happen but occasionally players say hey I don't want to pass them. I don't want to look them in the eye. I don't want to take any garbage. I'm going to walk around the other side, try and keep my composure and my concentration. That was a good firm forehand. That was a good serve. It was set up by the serve. That was a good serve under pressure. That was as good as it gets. And three four came up with the goods right into the corner and then brave two fisted back in. Sellers has been more courageous and bold about attacking the net. Well she didn't expect that. About a meter behind the baseline. She's going back across in front of her. Pretty good approach. She might have liked it a little bit deeper or a little bit more on it. I don't think she expected that because she's still in the service line area. Five four and out with two points on the serve. Six four mid three. Called wide. A very close one. It was a miss hit by the Sellers. That's two set points now for Verova. That's the first set. Seven games to six in 50 minutes. She had a big lead, let it slip and came back to win it in the tiebreaker. Sunday remarkable scenes along South Australia's wild west coast. The farmhouse sits on a sandy cove facing back to the West Coast. Coffin Bay is in fact a string of sheltered havens. Yeah. Up set there in the Lady Singles quarterfinal. This was played on court one here just prior to this match. Natalie Tosyat through to the semifinals. He hit it number 16 took out Lindsay Davenport and it's not six two six three one somewhere at six. Richard Krychek there over Sanguinetti six two six three six four. And boy has he had an easy roll through Krychek the last couple of days. Past champion here. Let's see what happens with Sellers here. This is Verova serving first game of the second set. Survived a set point. Sellers had the set point. She's starting to make a few more unforced errors. Betsy. Yeah, she's got 26 unforced errors. Sellers says she does have 16 winners. But she has been a very patchy performance so far from Sellers. Got that. Sellers does like to hit drop shots and she's she's pretty good at it. She moves inside catches it early. This one just squeaks in. Sellers would not have been too happy about the double fault. She served also in the tiebreak leading to one. So she's had a couple of momentum. Swings has been stopped twice. 50,000. Never underestimate the talent of Natasha Zvereva. She and everyone has always known it. She has every shot in the book and she is just probably in her career not been willing to put forth the work in singles. She's always preferred playing doubles more than singles. She is extremely talented. She's one of the very few top players who doesn't travel with a coach. She said she doesn't want to be told what to do. She'd rather just do things her own way. Well, that's what I say. She's a free spirit. She she likes to party a little bit. She enjoys life. She's got a great personality and it's fun to be around. She shocked everybody. Everyone that knows her was amazed how well she concentrated from start to finish to beat Steffi Graf. That's where she got her best. That's why she's won all those 18 Grand Slam doubles titles. It is amazing. I was looking at her doubles record. She's been in 109 career doubles finals. She's been in 27 Grand Slam finals winning 18. She's won the first game here of the second set. Won the first set in a tiebreak. The boots make players more powerful. The ball is faster and truer. World Cup 98. It's about those who love the game enough to do something about it. Shell is now serving. Second game. A quick look there to the Kiarumpire. The ball landed on the line. Love 15. I can't imagine what's going through Monica's mind at the moment. Love 30. Well played. Great shot that one. It wasn't hit with a lot of authority but it did the job. The ball that bounces on grass is unpredictable. The real question is just will this fair be able to put this match away when it gets down to the very latter stages. That's what everybody thought in the match with Graff. Now Sellers at 40-30. Well thought out point again from Zvereva. Drop shot and then lob over the head. Making Sellers do a lot of ground work. She picked that one too. Anticipated that. Zvereva knocked out Venus Williams last week in the tournament Eastbourne very easily. 261. She's brought that good form into the championships. She beat Venus on her 18th birthday. Zvereva just played unbelievable against Venus last week at Eastbourne just by doing the very same thing. She took pace off the ball. Used her slice backhand perfectly. That's the first pace for Sellers. Long struggle that she holds. One game all. Play has been in progress for exactly one hour. This is the bottom half of the draw and the number two seed Lindsay Davenport went out. Quick look at the Zvereva statistics. Davenport lost Natalie Toziat. Davenport beat her the last seven times they played. That was a big surprise. A very good singles career. She's been a very consistent top 20 player. She's been in 15 career finals. She's only got three wins out of those 15 finals and hasn't been in a final of a tournament since 95. Last year she had a couple of good wins. She beat Conchita Martinez in the top five. Eva Meyoli. Lindsay Davenport. All top 10 players. Well that was a desperate shot. And it made it. She's played that on three or four occasions. When she goes that one gives it a little bit more air over the net as she does again. Look where it lands. It's about three times right in the corner and it just did not come back. Zvereva did a good job to even reach it. 15-30. Another shot deep into the corner towards Zvereva unprepared. Now two break points for Selish. Let first service. The overall aggregate is around 13,000 from last year's attendance. This is the career prize money for Zvereva. A lot of that just made him doubles. This year's prize money is up around 300,000. It'll go up appreciably after she collects a check here at the championships. Two break points saved. Play again. And a good fight back. It's all set up by a terrific first serve here. It gets a good wrist snap right down the center of the court. Looks for something weak. And then uses her excellent hands. A nice drop shot. So from two break points it's now a game point. Trying to take a 2-1 lead in the second set. That's a brilliant point. Here's every part of the court and then comes up with a beautiful touch drop shot. Two games to one. Zvereva leads second set. Sellers now serving at one two down. Had a set point in the first set and lost it. Seven six in the tiebreaker. How about that? We don't see that one from Zvereva too often Betsy. She is just playing unbelievable tennis throughout this championships. Obviously the sun's gone in because Zvereva has taken the glasses off. Love 30 danger time. I love their forecast. It will stay dry and although rather cloudy at times some sunny spells are expected. There you go. Oh she hesitated. Didn't take it in the air. Let it bounce and paid the price. Three break points now for Zvereva. She's very confident off that shot now. What happens when you're beating somebody like Stephie Draft and then you keep marching on. There's not anything on that approach shot. So the early break has been achieved. It's three one now. One set to love. Oh. One thing for sure is you will not see Sellers in any way not try her very hardest. She's still just not feel comfortable on the surface. She's reached the Wimbledon final once back in 92. Let first of us lost to Stephie graph in that final has not had a good women the last couple of years. 15 or 10 years to serve well under pressure. No the first percentage is dropped down below 50% for Zvereva. Oh. That's the shot. 15. That is 34 on four stairs now for Sellers. 40 15. The return there from Sellers deep on the baseline and courts are starting to wear. This is the second Tuesday of the championships down around the baseline. The times you do get in regular bounce. 30. Game is too much again. Only one former champion took part in last year's lady singles competition. Who is she? The best way around the corner isn't to take a line through. The best way around the corner is to take a lion through it. The Persia. The Persia 306 engineered to be enjoyed. The best way around the corner is to take a lion through it. The best way around the corner is to take a lion through it. West End Gold, the new mid-strength beer. Sellers in a big hurry to get on with the job. She's out there early, but she's down 4-1. Got up there, but hooked it wide. Those tactics, the drop shots are playing off. Well, who was that? Betts, come on, you know. Conchita Martinez. There you go. Actually, in 1994, when Conchita won the title, beat Navratilova in the final. It broke a span of 13 years that either Martina Navratilova or Steffi Graf had won Wimbledon. Love, Sellers. Just a shake of the hand there from Sellers. Knows that she is absolutely frustrated here at the moment. It's love 30. 15,000. Against my play from Zverva, Sellers then to the left. 15,000. 15,000. Again, smart play from Zvereva. Celestan trying to give her a little bit of her own medicine with the drop shot. And then the reply drop shot is a good one. And again, the quick hands. 15-40, two break points for a 5-1 lead to really break this match right open. And one's deep. So it continues with the unforced errors and the 22nd ranked player in the world, Natasha Zvereva. Races to a 5-1 lead in the second set. Won the first set after surviving a set point, and this, folks, could be a huge upset. Celest leads their head-to-head for Zip. Zvereva has never been to a semi-final here at Wimbledon. She's been to the quarterfinals on a number of occasions, was a finalist at the French quite a while ago. Three times Zvereva has been to the quarterfinals here at Wimbledon. Loved him. She's been to the quarterfinals of every Grand Slam, but as you say, Fred, no further, except for the French Open back in 88 when she did get to the final. She's a youngster, one of the veterans of the tour. Well, Zvereva hardly even played that return, and there was not a call. I'm not going to get any satisfaction from the chair. It looked way long, she half-vollied the shot, loved 30, a chance for Celest to get back in it. We've seen these matches turn around. It just depends whether Zvereva feels that she can go on with the job and put this match away. Opportunities are all there. That one called wide, so serving for the match. She's down loved 40 on serve. Well, the job starts with a break of serve. It's now five games to two, Zvereva leads. Can you do magic? Sunday night, the television event that held 65 million American spellbound. I'm a wizard, that's my business. A superstar cast including Sam Neill, Miranda Richardson, Martin Short, Isabella Rossellini, Sir John Gilbert, and Helena Bonham Carter. You lied to me. You lied to me. Up to date stats, bets, anything there that we should worry about? The numbers are really pretty even. Zvereva doing a better job really on serve, even though she's well on, not very high percentage, only 46%, but she is winning more points on both first and second serve, which really is the surprise because Celest has such a terrific return of serve, and Celest is not doing a good enough job on the second serve of Zvereva, but it is jumping up pretty good. Well that stopped the rot because Celest had won five points in a row, 15 all, serving to stay in it. 15, 30. Double fault. Four. Well that point was an aggressive one from Zvereva, and she paid the price because that's just what Celest likes, she uses her pace to create pace, and she did so in that rally, it's 30 all. Celest was too good, very confident with either the one-handed backhand or the backhand. It is match point. Thank you. And there it is, the first time for Natasha Zvereva here at Wimbledon through to the semifinals, and boy, can you report that, Betsy, at the start of the championship. Wow, for Zvereva now to have defeated Steffi Graf, who her head-to-head was 17 and 0, and Monica Celest, and her head-to-head was 4 and 0, I mean, what an incredible performance. I know Celest came out here a little bit worried because Zvereva's been playing well, she got in the semifinals last week in Eastbourne, Lousington, Novotna, she's a super grass-court tennis player, she's got a great game, not only for the surface, but a good style to match up against Celest, because she can mix up the pace, and she did a terrific job of that today. Well, when you had a look at the bottom half of the draw here, you felt that Celest had a pretty good run to get through to the final. As they go off now, it is Natasha Zvereva to play Natalie Toziat in one semifinal, and Martina Hingis in the other to play either Novotna or Williams, so a great opportunity for Zvereva as she goes off court, and we'll be back with the Philippe Poussus-Sampras match after the break. It's quarterfinals day here at the championships, and I'm going to show you what the game looks like. Those are the chefs and the players. We've got some great chips and what an upset that was. But Monica, not quite as good in her game today, but the tash is a rover playing very, very well. We'll update you on a couple of scores. And you'll just see how we have been traveling. Martina Hingus wasn't always convincing a bit against a rancher. Sanchez for carry out, got through in three sets though. And we continue Natalie Torzio. That was a bit of an upset over Lindsay Davenport in straight sets. it's Williams. Meanwhile we've had one men's quarterfinals decided here today Richard Krychek through in straight sets that was out on court 13. So we are awaiting Pete Sampras and of course Mark Filipouzis to make their way out here on to court one to see how they're going to go on this quarterfinal. It should be an absolute ripper. Looking forward to it both players feeling very comfortable about being with one another. They have big serves and of course they are real big crowd pleases. Now we've got Mark Filipouzis and he spoke with confidence about this particular lineup. Can you beat him? Why not? It's a match that nobody wants here isn't it before the final, Pete Sampras. You know I'm sure he doesn't want me also to be quite honest. He said some complimentary things about you a few minutes ago so he may he may fear you more than he's feared anybody else here so far. Well you know that it always happens you know being an underdog you go you know people don't expect me to win. I'm going in there relaxed but to be honest inside of me I know I think I could win so I'm not gonna go in there thinking okay I'm happy of my quarterfinals go out there and join myself whatever happens happens you know I'm playing Pete you know I'm gonna go in there and you know I'm gonna be disappointed I'm just gonna go out there and fight until the end and make sure you know I'm standing there last. Well the attitude is good and Mark Filipouzis after practice this morning at the Arangin courts out the back here of the championships with his training partner there Gavin Hopper really seems to enjoy this almost as much as Mark but he's playing so well and there's every reason to believe that he's going to recruit himself really well against the world number one and here he is very relaxed Pete Sampras enjoying a bit of a conversation as he strolls through the the Arangin courts he's just completed his training session at that particular point in time and really comfortable about this match but he knows that Filipouzis is a very much a danger man. He's one of those players and when he gets hot there's really nothing you can do and the match I played him a couple years in Australia he was on fire I mean he had the home crowd behind him and he was tough to beat but beat him here a couple years ago on the grass and he's tough I mean anyone that can serve like he serves it's tough to break you know and it comes down to a breaker and a couple swings of the return I mean it's a surface that you have to stay on your toes you can't afford to get careless and and play someone like Filipouzis you know how much time to breathe you know it's it's coming right at you at 125 miles an hour so it's gonna be a lot of hard-hitting tennis and you know just get my best shot. And he will we've got the Mark Filipouzis of course Pete Sampras match coming up in just a few moments time it will be on court one that's at the bottom of your screen and it looks like we're going to have a full house and there's nothing like the atmosphere of Centre Court and Court one it really does bring out the best in the players the crowds love it and particularly when you have two big hitting players who play spectacular tennis like Filipouzis and Sampras and you remember a couple of years ago that dramatic win by Filipouzis over Sampras in Melbourne it was one of the finest games of big hitting tennis that you'd ever want to see and right now the kid is playing so well who knows it could be a big upset here this afternoon. In the meantime we'll be back right after the break. In a recent comparison by Wheels magazine one prestige car was voted number one with top performances in every category. A warm and friendly get-together with outstanding Australians. Oh my hands and knees. Their innermost thoughts. I'll own up to one thing. On their lives, their country and personal secrets. My first actual experience was frightening because I was alone at the time. That have even raised seeing Ray. How about when you caught up having a cigarette? Up close and personal premieres 9.30 Saturday on Channel 9. Get set folks to duck and wee because the big guns are out there. The fire brands, the fireballs as far as service is concerned anyway. We should see some fabulous tennis in this quarterfinals on court one and a call all the action none other than Fred Stolle and John Newcomb. Thank you Ken. Well the boys are striking the first ball of their warm-ups and this is a five minute job out here with the warm-ups. They've tossed the coin and Newk this is going to be an interesting one. They're big servers but we go back to just a few weeks ago where Philip Poussas was not happy with his form and was not even going to play Wimbledon. Had a tight one in the first round. Took out the number 7 seed Kafelnikov and from then he's gone from strength to strength and is quite confident in this one. Well he's confident of doing you know playing a good game. I think to say that you'd be confident of beating Sampras would be you know you feel you he feels he can beat him. Pete's the number one seed here and the number one player in the world and has been the number one player for the last five years. 32 million dollars in prize money Fred. There'll be no benefits played for Pete you don't think? No I don't think you'll need a benefit here when he when he stops. A lot of people including myself are you know be very interested to see how Sampras plays in this match because he hasn't really been tested. He had a little bit of a tough one against Thomas Enquist. Yep. And there's his results from Australia how he's done in the Australian Championships. He's won it twice. Carlos Fortuniga tennis fan is a keen observer of this one. And to see how Pete goes because Philip Poussa is coming into this match I think has really progressed well through the tournament. His form has got a little better each match and the last three sets he played against Sampras were up against Stoltenberg were very convincing. Yeah I think the difference here maybe we know both of them have powerful serves. It's going to be the returner serve. If Sampras can get the return back then you've got to give Sampras the edge in mobility and off the ground. The pace of shot off the ground though is not going to bother Philip Poussa. He hits the ball as hard as anybody off the ground. It's just whether he can get the consistency that may be required to win this one. And obviously we've talked about second serves. Sampras second serves is a little more reliable. Yes very tough second serve under pressure. Philip Poussa against Stoltenberg double faulted to lose his serve two times in the first set and there's the second one on on set point down. And he quite often he goes for that really big serve on his second serve on big points. But to give him credit he was winning about 36% of the points on his second serve by the end of the first set. He finished up the match his average was 54% on second serve and that's that's really good. Well over the last month we did a couple of well we did that match in in Paris where Mark led two sets of love against Ulrich and sort of threw it away. His confidence was down on that occasion and he did make a statement to the press after his defeat in the first round of Queens that he'd had enough he wasn't he was feeling down and he was gonna go home he wasn't gonna play Wimbledon. Obviously his dad or whoever looks after him said hey that's a bit of a silly statement you're gonna play and get in and he won that first round. Kofelnikov led a set and a break and served two double faults to let Mark into that match and then Kofelnikov went away. Filipusas has improved steadily since then and also in his mental attitude as we know this game is 80% confidence when you have the ability that Filipusas has or Sampras and he feels pretty happy with himself at the moment. Lost a fair bit of weight. Yeah I would think looking at him he would have lost about eight to ten kilos since we played Davis Cup in against the United States. He played against Sampras in that tie lost in three sets three close sets but three straight sets. Played on a hard court in Washington this is how Sampras has reached this spot he seeded number one and Hibati we thought it'd give him some trouble but that was the first match and that was played out on center court pretty greasy conditions so he's yet to drop a set in the championships and had a tough one with Enquist down a set point in that third set and then with Grosjean well that was just a good practice session for him. So he hasn't had a lot of tough matches under his belt and sometimes you need those whereas Filipusas has had you can see the score there in the opening match where he came out won that second set 7-6 and then Alex O'Brien a couple of tiebreakers and then Braccioli who was a qualifier from Italy and then the one against his friend and Davis Cup teammate Jason Stoltenberg and he lost the first set and then came back and won that in four sets. Head-to-head Sampras leads at 4-2 and the last meeting as Newk mentioned was in Davis Cup play on a hard court in Washington where Sampras defeated Filipusas pretty convincingly. This is the grass courts and we have that intermittent sunshine that's been we haven't seen too much of that over the championships it's good to see it they're very very patient the fans over here they love their tennis and they are expecting some fireworks in this one you can see the time they're just after three o'clock in the afternoon here in London so I know you folks at home have had a very frustrating week in a bit with the commentary and with the whatever we've been bringing you at home because we have had problems with the weather they're only behind on a couple of matches and if we get another two days of this type of weather they'll have caught up. I think the tactics we're going to see from Sampras today Fred he's going to try to not take big swings on the Filipusas serve when he's returning it he's going to try to get the ball down low to Filipusas without too much pace on it he'll go for some returns but this will be his main tactic I believe get it down low force Filipusas to volley up so that he gets a crack at the passing shot. That means he's got to have confidence in what we term his second shot so he's not going to go for a lot of winners off the first one get it back get it low and anticipate where the volleys going and make the passing shot. What I liked about the Filipusas match against Stoltenberg was that after he lost the first set he didn't panic or tried to ending silly he really got stuck down to business he lifted his game tried to play steady if he had an opportunity like a 15-30 point he didn't get the return back into play he was talking to himself saying come on get it back into play and that's it means he's playing good point-by-point tennis. Chair umpire for this match is just called time is Andreas Egli he's in charge he's in the hot seat he's got to make the overrules and make decisions on the close calls when the fireworks start and they're just about to get underway and it's Sam Prist to lead off. Only played once on grass in the six matches that they've played against one another and that was in 1996 here Wimbledon and Sam Prist took out Filipusas in a close one seven six six four six four. You might see Sam Prist try to go in behind Filipusas quite a lot on his first volley in other words when Filipusas returns he'll start moving to cover the cross court Sam Prist will come back to where Filipusas was harder for a big guy like Filipusas to change direction. noticeable. 14-15 45 Right on the line with the volley game, Sam Prist, one game to loi each. Everything's just fine. Welcome back to the championships. This is live coverage. I hope you're enjoying it. Philip Poussas with his first service game. First team quarterfinalists here. There's two of them from Holland, being Kreiceck and Jan Simmerink. It's the best Simmerink's ever done here at Wimbledon. It's the first time that two Dutch men have achieved the quarterfinal round, the great Tom Ocker, the flying Dutchman. He's made it to the semifinals here on a couple of occasions, but it's the first time that two folks from Holland have been in the quarters. Pretty good performance. European tennis is very healthy. F10 all. What a good second serve. He did one of those against Stoltenberg to save a break point. Picking out wide to the backhand and short down the court. 15, 30. Oh, good with the Autumn Hearths. I think some big second serve aces from Sartio to Lopusis to stay in the game. I think he's got to serve two second serve aces to be at 30 all. Well played. Didn't try to do anything too fancy until he was set up for the opportunity. That's going to be the difference how they return the serve. Let's see where this serve lands. It was reasonably deep, just a really good return from Sampras. As you mentioned, Sampras has not been returning really that crisply throughout the championships. And this will be a big test because to win today he's going to have to. First service. But he is a champion and like that last shot he takes those opportunities. If you get a second serve he'll block the first serve back and he'll take his chances on the second serve. Just like that. Block it back, make the man play the volley. If Lopusis gets that one back then he's got confidence in his second shot. So the first break point here and it's against Lopusis. Yes. Comes in with a big serve there. 210k, 132mph right down the middle. And a good serve to get the game point. Again a second serve that he's drilled the return. Good signs here for Sampras. He's really on to Lopusis' serve. It's only the first service game. Stop. Where would you think he should serve more balls on the first serve? Fred to the Sampras forehand or backhand? Definitely to the forehand because Sampras is more prone to have a go at that rather than block it back. On the backhand side he'll just try and block it back and keep it low down for Lopusis. I think he's going to have a lot more free points if he can serve to the forehand. Game. That one. That's as hard as his hit one. I think it's a great first serve. He survived the break point. It's one all. Good game. Second service. Sampras is such a beautiful mover around the court. Me, he's like a big cat out there. And it's smooth, isn't it? He's there without any effort. Even when he runs wide balls he maintains his balance. Sir Teelon. Sampras won more Grand Slam singles titles than any active player with 10. He's tied Big Bill Tilden in fourth place on the all-time list. Roy Emerson of course, that's been well publicised. He holds the record for the most Grand Slam with 12. Borg and Laver with 11 apiece. 30-15. It was only 12 months ago that everybody in the game thought that Sampras would surpass the 12 that Emerson had achieved. But he's sort of run into a brick wall. That's another super volley from Sampras. He's picked up some terrific low volleys. Normally early in the match if you have to play a difficult low volley it's hard to get your timing going. But he's hit a couple right on the baseline. Again, Sampras. Roy, not going to see too many volleys in this match. Two games to one, Sampras leads. On the pro tennis circuit you make a lot of friends in far away places. So why does Mark Filipousas make his long distance calls with AAPT Smart Chat? Could it be because AAPT has all the flexibility of the younger player? Not to mention great service. Or is it simply because we've smashed the cost of phoning overseas? Call AAPT now on 1300 65 1414. And you're the winner. It's your call. The new Peugeot 406 Coupe engineered to be enjoyed. Well what started off as a pretty explosive match is continuing in that vein. Not a lot of rallies and big serving. Been out there for 13 minutes. It's two games to one. Filipousas now serving. Bottom half of the draw. The two favourites down there, the two big servers, Ivanojevich and Krychek. Ivanojevich is at 11 to 2 to win the tournament. Krychek is at 9 to 2 to take out the title. Sampras at the shortest odds of a lot of them. He's the favourite. What's he at? I didn't bet on him so I didn't get the odds. You back the other two did you? No I had a bet on Ivanojevich actually. 15-0. He lost that one. Caught him right near the right shoulder. Couldn't get out of the way of it. Those ones that come high at you like that, you've really got to move your feet to get into position. South Hill. You do a lot of work Filipousas in these first two service games. He's only getting 25% of his first serves in so he's just having a bit of trouble getting the timing. 15-30 there, he had a look at a second serve and went after it again. 30-0. 14-30. He missed it, that was a gift. Sampras had not even moved. He's framed it off the top of the racket, never moved. It's two high forehand volleys Filipousas has missed in this game. Both of them I believe mainly due to footwork. Advantage Filipousas. Again Filipousas. Filipousas holes, two games off. Look at the Filipousas serve and movement in after. 15-0. Both players have technically very good serves, good ball tosses, good weight distribution. Not too much can go wrong with their actions. I actually like Filipousas's swing a little bit better. I think he's got a better finish than Sampras does. Sampras finishes halfway through the swing. Filipousas completes his but both very effective from the time they get up there and the racket head speed at the top of the toss. 31. Just have a look at Sampras' ball toss. It's really picture perfect. The way he keeps his arm up after the ball has left his hand. The ball doesn't move too much when it gets up the top. I guess to its apex it doesn't drop a lot before he makes contact with it. Attempted angled high backhand volley. Went wrong for Sampras. He was really a bit far back from the net to get the angle he desired. 30-15. Yes, that Sampras left arm after the ball leaves. We see him putting away his forehand. The fingers are stretched straight up and it's perfectly straight the hand. It's almost like a ballet dancer doing something. Keeps the shoulder up and the head up. The very last split second. 40-15. 40-13. Again, Sampras. He's got the balls. It's three games to two. Opening six. If you need to do business at your own pace, the Sampras give you all the freedom in the world. This match is out on Court 1. Fred Stolle along with John Newcomb bringing you the coverage. Hope you're enjoying 8-on-9's Wide World of Sports. We'll be here right through to the finals on Sunday. We'll be here right through to the finals day-to-day in both the men's and women's singles. Keep you abreast of all those results as the day progresses. But this is the one everybody has been waiting for at home. They're on serve in the first set. Sir, T. Long. Second set. We had a look at Sampras' ball toss hand after the ball leaves his hand. Philip Poussos doesn't extend his fingers right up into the air the same way Sampras does. They sort of drop down a little bit. Goes after that second serve, double fault there. Still a very correct ball toss. Arm coming down and then straight up. 40-50. Not much noise from the crowd because they haven't seen a great many rallies. It's just been big serving so far. Second set. Again, solid serve right down the middle. Philip Poussos holds. It's a three-game draw. Three-game song. Only three games into the match. Sampras is only averaging 38% of first serves into play, but he's won every one of those points. When his first serve goes in, he's batting 100%. Sampras is batting 82% on first serves when they go into play. Another race from Sampras. It's a big edge, isn't it? Hard to break someone when they're winning every point on their first serve. Second service. Second service. Solid volley from Sampras. The speed of some of these returns from Philip Poussos isn't troubling Sampras at all. You can see he doesn't have to take a big swing with the volley. He's using the speed from the return to generate the power. That's bad luck. This was great anticipation from Philip Poussos. As soon as he got the return back low, he anticipated that Sampras was going to try the drop volley. He's got to get on his way into the net before he loves it. Again, Sampras, 4 change 3. Sampras, 4 games to 3. Friday night at the movies. I'm so good. See you, sir. The fastest kind of life is back in town. I hate these big cities. We can do this the easy way. We can do it the hard way. A desperado with courage and style. This isn't Fellowship. This isn't a TWT on swapped mittens. You're saying White Forest? Yunus. You're playing for the big leagues in ourers? This is a game rules, ourers. Up to 90 seconds off the beach. Awesome florida here. You heard that. So that's what you're Script Box opponent, Yunus Poussos. You beat the wiring guys across the sea. First quarter of 2017, something about your Can you see I don't want Yo. Ah! Ah! Pete Sampras on serve, out on court one here, quarter-final day at the championships. Mark Philipusas to serve. 15-0. Out! 13-0. Nice change up from Philipusas. Only 101 miles per hour. Plenty of kick on it too. Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! 14-0. 14-0. 14-0. 14-0. I'll show you the difference in first serves. That was the flat one instead of the kicker. That was 121 miles per hour. It's tough, isn't it? 20 miles per hour difference coming at you. I wouldn't see either one of those. I wouldn't want to see either one. 14-0. 14-0. Game. Straight into the body. Second serve. Four games old. Game. 13-0. Second ice. Second ice. Out! 13-0. So far there's been a lot of tennis played. A lot of serving. A lot of serving. Aces and double faults. High velocity serves. Not many rallies. 14-50. Sampras continuing to win 100% of points when his first serve goes in. It's a great believer in doing something different if you're receiving. Stand back a couple of metres back or to the left or the right. Do anything. It's silly to stand there and take it. Another double fault. 14-30. Two double faults in this game. If you can give the service something different to look at, it might just break their concentration and might try to do a little bit more. A little bit different. Get a fault out of them. Four out of the chalk. Five games to four. Sampras leads. In a recent comparison by Wheels magazine, one prestige car was voted number one with top performances in every category. It wasn't the Audi A4, nor the Saab 95, or even the Lexus ES300. It was the Peugeot 406 SV. Unbeaten for drivability, performance, comfort and price. Peugeot. Engineered to be enjoyed. And we're still on serve. Only one break point chance and that was Sampras had the opportunity on Filipousis' first service game. 15 love. And he came out with a big one like that. And that's the only chance either player has had on serve. 15 love. 15 love. 30 15. Another second serve ace. Served four aces, Filipousis. Three of them have been off second serves. 40 15. 40 15. Well, things just sort of drifting along Fred with serve apart from Filipousis in his first two service games. He had to work pretty hard. Obviously to break serve, you got to serve a couple of double faults and somebody got to miss a few. But this way it looks certain that we're going to go to a tiebreaker if they continue. Only the first couple of service games that Filipousis was in trouble. 15 love. Sometimes matches go along like this and then all of a sudden both players will start winning points on the return. 15 love. It's a good one. A crack at a second serve and just going back to the point I said about standing somewhere different to see if he can force the server to miss the first serve. Sanford is only winning 53 percent of the points on his second serve. So if you can get him to miss his first serve, you've almost got a 50 percent chance there of winning the point against none on the first serve. Start the 15. Opportunity here is as close as Filipousis has been. It's the right time to do it. Five all, 30 all. Where do you look for this serve to come? Most of the serves have been down to the back end so far. On that side, he went out to the forehand. Did one of those the other day instead of trying to flatten out on it, he came over it and you can see him going there saying get over the ball. Hit it with topspin. Don't try to hit it so flat across court. A little flick across court like he did a couple the other day would have been perfect there. 40, 30. Sanford will watch that one drift out. The action at court one and it has been heavy artillery here as far as the serves are concerned. And it's at six five. Philip Pouss is serving to go into a tiebreaker in the first set. This is where San Francisco gets a look at second serves and may do as he did then move forward. And trying to anticipate you got a good look at that one. Big forehand love fifteen. So it's imperative that Philip Pouss keeps cracking that first serve and getting the first serve in. When he does, he wins most of the points. That one directly at the body. So at eight fifteen. Both players have had that serve working quite well. That one on that singles line if it's two meters up towards the chair umpire. It's nearly impossible to stretch out and make a shot from that. Thirty fifteen. Forty fifteen. First serves in it's forty fifteen. Good volley from Philip Pouss. He got down to it. Hit it low. Skidded through low. Very hard to pass off a volley that's hit firm like that. That's a good return. The ball was behind San Peres. Just with some very good racket work. He was able to hook it back down the line with interest. Good shot. It was a good volley from low down. It was a fine return. Of course San Peres wanted off that one. Well Fred this could come down to who gets the most first serves in in the tie break. This is where it gets to Russian roulette. You serve a double fork or you miss an easy shot or even a bad call can make the difference here. Thank you. Gee that takes some courage. He served a let down the middle didn't he and then you come up with a second serve and you go for that out wide. That was 109 miles per hour out wide. He's averaging 105 miles per hour on his second serve. You usually take a bit of pace off when you serve it out wide. Didn't need to go for that much. 2-0 San Peres. San Peres did an unbelievable job to jag that one back. He was in control of the rally. He just needed to get it back solid and deep. Not at 100 miles an hour. San Peres was not on balance. He's leading 2-0 now. Take charge of that second serve. That's what a champion can do in the tight situations. Looking for that first serve. He scrambled one back and then got an unforced error. And then on that last point took advantage of a second serve. 3-0 San Peres. Usually a wild second serve. That was over a metre. Even more than that wasn't it. It sort of flew off the racket in a strange way. As though he didn't really get it in the middle of the frame. 3-1. Unbelievable pick up from San Peres. That is just fantastic. That ball was right down the line. 4-1 San Peres. Take a look at San Peres' racket work here. On the dead run he gets enough angle on the ball off the racket face so that it doesn't bounce. Pretty good return. A passing shot from Philip Poussis. He measured that one well. 4-2. Players will change ends. This player to reach 7 with a margin of 2 wins the set. Both players will tail down. Just going back to that San Peres volley. Most players in the tournament would be very happy to reach the ball. Let alone play a winning volley often. Look at the motion of the Philip Poussis serve. Look how he measures this one. Gets down there. That's textbook stuff. Where he moved forward. He kept the head of the racket up and moved forward on the volley. That's the shot that San Peres has not played particularly well throughout the week. Not on balance with it. Philip Poussis backhand down the line. A similar one to that. It was produced a little better. San Peres still ahead. 4-3. He made it. Philip Poussis is having a second look. That was pretty close to being out. Must have only got a centimeter of the line. He's back in behind his opponent. 5-3. Set points now San Peres. 6-3 San Peres. 128 miles per hour. Fastest serve he's done in the match. He has a habit of doing that on big points San Peres coming up with his best tennis. I guess that's why he's number one five years in a row. Watch this second serve. He won't take anything off it. 6-4 San Peres. That last second serve of Philip Poussis was 121 miles per hour. That's what his average is on first serves. 6-5 San Peres. They both said this match would come down to serving. There hasn't been any real bad serving in the tiebreaker. They haven't served any double well. San Peres served one double fault. At the moment Fred it's down to that forehand volley that San Peres made. If he hadn't made that volley he'd be behind 5-6. He's going to make a second serve. You can see San Peres' reaction there. The importance of that first set in the best of five set gives you that little edge. San Peres has come through in the tiebreaker 7-6. On a current affair, Destination Australia. How do we rate in the service stakes? It's not as in your face as the Americans. What do tourists really think of us? It's not quick, it's not friendly. Tonight at 6.13. Yeah, look going down, aces, double faults. First serves in pretty low, 50%. Points won on first serve pretty even. Points won on second serve pretty even. The match has been pretty even. No service breaks and we start set two. 48 minutes first set. 47 it took and then I saw the changeovers. The big thing here with Philip Poussas, he's got to think, hey, well, now I've just lost that, but I've got to keep my wits about me. I can't go down a service break early in this set. He's got to keep the pressure on, love 15. Net for service. 15 all. Sort of a no prisoner match, isn't it? They're out there, they're building the ball so hard at one another. We're not going to take any prisoners. It's last man standing. Not a lot of finesse because they're hitting the ball so hard. 30 15. 40 15. Pretty good try. It would have been some shot if he'd made it off the speed of that volley. It's a good shot. How many years apart with Ken Rosewall's first and last appearances in the Wimbledon final. I'm happy. We'll give you the answer to that trivia question after the first point. 15. How many years apart with Rosewall's first and last appearances in the Wimbledon final. Nick been in one of them so they had 20 years. Nick, when he was an old man. I beat him in 1970 when he was young. A young fellow. Ken Rosewall is still playing here. I'm playing with him in the senior 45 and over gentleman's doubles. We're the oldest team in the event. We play a match later on this afternoon. Who did he lose to in 54 and 74? He lost to Drobny in 54 and Connors in 74. You're right. You want the money or the box? Give me the money. 30. 14. The server continues to dominate. Rosewall lost to Drobny, Connors, myself. What year was the other final he was in? Who did he lose to? This is a trivia question for you folks at home because I'm not going to answer it. She doesn't know the answer. 1956, Lou Ho. Lou Ho won the Australian, French, Wimbledon and then went on to the US. Rosewall beat him in the final. That's right. He stopped Ho from winning the Grand Slam. 19. 30. 40. He had to guess. Longest rally of the match. It was four hits, wasn't it? Actually it was six hits. It was six hits. All served. Two games to one. Don't believe me? It's time for the spread tester. See, ready to spread. What about the taste? Pure butter because it's made from pure cream. In fact, all it is is soft butter. Maybe they should have called it that. Butter soft. It's great for cooking. The winner of the quarterfinals. The hands of three tie breakers. You'll see some of that. a few tears and a couple arguments and as soon as this match is finished we hopefully can show you some of that one. Ivan Isovich has won a few tiebreakers hasn't he? He won two against Todd Martin. Three today hasn't lost one last two matches five and zip. 15-0. Philip Pouss is really getting hold of the second serve it was deep too nice return. No one's really trying many chips out there are they on returner serve just sort of blocking the ball back without too much pace on it. Look at this pace of shot and that one 15-30. Got past Sampras 15-30 now. 13-0. Philip Pouss has lost the first set of the match against Kofelnikov the service comparisons and he also lost the first set of his match against Stoltenberg and came back to win both of them obviously. Scorched it down the line sets him up with his first break point opportunity. He really ripped this one down the line there was no way Sampras was going to get to that like he did previously. He's got to be looking down the center for a first serve. Yes. Could change up there from Sampras because he. Mr. Chapman as a courtesy to the players please turn off your mobile phones thank you. He actually prefers to serve it down the center on big points that doesn't mean he always does. It's only when you say he's going to. It seems to happen doesn't it every time you say someone's serving well they serve a double. There it is. Second opportunity now for Poussus. Match in progress exactly one hour. Yes. Little Poussus looking for that one down the tee because he went out the backhand last time and he barely pretty much turned the shoulders to crack a forehand. He had to use two hands to try and get the racket on the ball on the backhand side juice. That's a wild serving from Sampras. And now you've got to be thinking surely he's going to go down the middle. Let's watch Philip Poussus see which way he moves. He went out the backhand again. This is a tough second serve because Sampras has not served a good game in this one. Oh that wasn't a good volley from Sampras he didn't put a lot of pace on it. A little nervous wasn't it. Yes sort of pushed it down there and Philip Poussus on the forehand stepped right off the ball. I think he wanted to go cross court with a short roll that top spin cross court juice so that's three opportunities missed. Can't buy a first serve on this juice court Sampras. That was an excellent volley. A good return way down low and he plays the drop volley. The big thing was Freddie didn't back off his second serve having double folded twice. He put that second one in at 111 miles per hour. Game point now well over his average. Dodges a few bullets in that one. Sampras three chances for the Australian. It's two games all. Crowd got all excited there with Philip Poussus having a couple of chances. Something was about to happen. Yep had a similar shot in the tiebreak for the Poussus and he tried to rifle the ball hit it over the baseline. This was a better approach shot and just set himself up for the volley. Sampras knew it was going cross court as soon as he hit the ball high down the line. It's a difficult shot to make this one for Philip Poussus and Sampras just decided to run and he knew where it was going and he's got the open court just had to block it back over the net. 15 all. That's a real reverse smash. Have a look at the racket face as he hits this. Pull my arm out of the socket if I tried that. Body going one way and the arm and the racket going the other. Oh Philip Poussus did a good job to reach this. He was anticipating the shot. It was the speed of the shot that beat him. Almost made it too. 30 all. And for service. Both players starting to make a few more returns now Fred and a few more passing shots. He anticipated that set right on top of the net knew exactly where that forehand was coming and just made an error on the volley. Great point now for Sampras. Net for service. Oh net for service. Oh here from Philip Poussus to save the break point. Oh Oh Oh again. It survives a break point. It's two two. The boots make players more powerful. The ball is faster and truer. World Cup 98. It's about those who love the game enough to do something about it. Oh you can climb a mountain. You can jump into the fire but you'll never be free. The surprisingly versatile Mazda Metro. You'll find anything goes in a Metro. At the changeover Philip Poussus had the trainer Bill Norris come out and rub some liniment into his thighs. I don't think there's anything serious there before the match started. He was in the dressing room and getting some heat. A little bit of a rub on his thighs. Probably a little bit of stiffness there and he just wants to keep that blood flowing through. 15 long. 30 long. 30 long. Well because of the bad weather that we've had here on and off again. I haven't had a lot of rest between rounds. I played Stoltenberg and that was a five setter. Four sets I'm sorry. Four sets and then a tough four setter. Physios work hard here at Wimelan. Of course it is tough on the body. Particularly when the conditions and the weather is not warm. 14 long. Again Sampras. Three games all. Five aces for Sampras. Six for Philip. Say the madam on your own. And then the six. grave. Five aces for Sampras, six for Philopousis. 15 long. 15 long. 15 long. 15 long. 15 long. 15 long. 15 all. 15 all. 15 all. Oh yeah, that's a forehand. That is a forehand. Philip Poussos, a huge serve and this forehand volley was cracked believe me. And Philip Poussos, you can see him covering down the line, never even got a chance to put his racket out to it. Good anticipation Sampras and as you mentioned earlier Newk, unbelievable balance and movement. Sampras is pouring on the pressure. Just trying to get the ball back on first serve. Yep, he's starting to make more returns. That was a bad error from Philip Poussos, wasn't that tough a shot, tried to do too much with it. This is where he's been vulnerable, he won't take anything off this second serve. There it is, Sampras talked about that in many many of his matches. It's a double fault on the break point, Sampras leads 4-3. These are both pure butters. The one in the handy tub is called butter soft because it spreads cold. See the people from mainland have taken the bits out that make it go hard in the fridge. Don't believe me? It's time for the spread tester. See, ready to spread. Now what about the taste? Pure butter because it's made from pure cream. In fact all it is is soft butter, maybe they should have called it that. Butter soft, it's great for cooking too. Another men's singles quarterfinal, this one on centre court. Peter Corder the number 3 seed against Tim Henman. Pride of Great Britain still in there, he's got a break 4-2 against Corder in the opening set. We're calling the action live over here on court one. Sampras has just achieved a break in the second set. Courtesy of a double fault on break point to get to 4-3. It's actually been the first break of the match because the first set went to a tiebreaker. There were no service breaks, only a couple of opportunities and then they went for it in a tiebreaker. Now Sampras trying to consolidate that first service break. 30 love with two aces, one on a first serve, one on a second serve. Philip Pirsus led 3-2 and had a couple of break point opportunities. Now he's suddenly down 4-3 in a break. The champ is turning it on. 14. The questions were being asked of Sampras coming into this match. How well are you actually playing in a warm-up tournament before Wimbledon? He lost to Mark Woodford in easy two sets, lost in straight sets to pretty low-ranked player Delgado in the French Open. And hasn't looked good for the last couple of months. Wimbledon's Wimbledon though, isn't it? I don't know. He seems at Wimbledon. By the end of the first week of Wimbledon he's started to build up some steam and he starts playing the big points so well. 5-3 now. 15 long. Again, he knew coming into this match and said so at the right of the top of our telecast today that Philip Pirsus is very tough to play because he just thumps down big first serves and he would be trying to get them back and just play some good tight games on his own serve. Out. 15 long. 30-15. 14-15. Positive service game here but he's down a break. 40-15. Again, Philip Pirsus. After the Pirsus holes when we come back it will be Sampras serving for two sets to Love League. Real World is the sensational new single from Matchbox 20. Featuring a special bonus Australian tour poster. With four hit singles, Matchbox 20 of sold over 6 million copies. Matchbox 20, real music for yourself or someone like you. 15 long. 15 long. White piece. Thank you. 15 long. What Sampras get up for this ball he makes it look very easy, a backhand smash. They get a considerable way off the ground. Look at the grace of the movement in this guy. Makes it look easy, a tough shot. 14 long. Nice brings up three set points. Question needs to perform for service. It's long, loaded on the frame, loaded long. Sampras after an hour and 19 minutes leads two sets to love. 7664. It just shows you Fred doesn't it? When you get chances against a guy like Sampras you've really got to seize them. You've got to try to make something happen. Looking back again, Filipusis, 3-2, Sampras serving, two break points, he had two opportunities. And they're not taken when you blink and suddenly you've lost the set 6-4. Really when you get out and you really get into the analysis of it, it was lost basically on that double fault. And chances are if the second serve goes in, his percentages on second serves are pretty good. But Sampras never had to offer a shot to break serve when he got to that opportunity. 40 long. Sampras has gone to that two sets to love lead only averaging 47% of his first serves into play. That's very, very low. 40-50. This is where he's done it, just on that first serve he's tried to block the ball back and on second serves he's tried to hit out on the shot. Obviously we said at the start, the mobility, Sampras has got to be given the edge as far as movement's concerned. 40-15. That was a good solid volley from Filipusis there deep into the forehand corner. And that's where he's done it. Good day mate. What are you drinking? That new West End Gold. The new mid-strength beer. It's great, isn't it? Yeah, it tastes like the strong stuff but you can suck a few around the barbie with the mate or have some fun with the wife in the barbie instead of just falling asleep in front of the insectilized. Hey, you on for another one? Sure, good as gold mate. West End Gold. The new mid-strength beer. For your chance to see Anna Kornikova play in her first match in Sydney in January, please ring 1902 553 605 and tell us what brand of shoe Anna Kornikova wears at Wimbledon. That's for the first two sets. Don't show up anything that's surprising. Yeah, the first serves in 57% for Filipusis, 47 for Sampras, points won on second serve. That's very high for Sampras, 63%. That's excellent. It just shows you that on that second serve, 63% compared to 56%. It's only been a matter of a couple of points here and there and that difference has been Sampras's one or two more points on the second serve. He loves this shot and he only plays it when he's pretty confident. You can see him set himself for that to say, hey, I'm going to jump as high as I can and let it go. That takes perfect balance and perfect timing. You ever tried to do that Fred? I have, but I missed the ball. And I don't jump that high. I can just see you these days coming in and trying that. As much as I can see myself doing it. 14. Sampras has this way of just walking around the court, sort of a little bit of a hang dock look and believe me, down at court side when you're against him, this is as intense a man as I've seen on the court. Game Sampras ball change please. One game all. One game all. Sitting at court side when we played him in Davis Cup last September, I was actually a little bit surprised. Most of Pete's matches I've done in the commentary booth and you don't really catch it up here, but down at court side, you know, there were little things coming out of his mouth, expressions and saying that, you know, you don't pick up, but believe me, they were very intense. 15. It's one of these matches where it's very difficult to keep your concentration level when you're down on court because you know the serves are coming at you, the average is that we've given you over 120 miles an hour, 117 for Philip Pousses, 120 for Sampras or in that vicinity and you've just got to try and block him back, get him back. 14. You just walk back and forth across the court and have to take advantage of the second serve, so it gets to be a bit frustrating. Difficult on the concentration. Game. Take a seat. Two games to one. He's up two sets. Chicago. In the wake of a bombing, who will stand the heat? These are both pure butters. The one in the handy tub is called butter soft because it spreads cold. See the people from mainland have taken the bits out that make it go hard in the fridge. Don't believe me? It's time for the spread tester. See ready to spread. And what about the taste? Pure butter because it's made from pure cream. In fact, all it is is soft butter. Maybe they should have called it that. Butter soft. It's great for cooking too. There at it again, those footy show pranksters. I can't do it anymore. What's wrong with you, Max? It came for a laugh. You've just been had by the footy show. And impossible to match. Magnificent performance. The footy show time for thee tonight on nine. Quarter final on centre court. Peter Corder, the number three seed has lost the first set to Great Britain's Tim Henman, 6-3. We come back to the action on court one. Corder went over on his ankle towards the end of his last match and he has it rather heavily taped. So it's probably hindering him a little bit. 15. Sanford's looked up because chalk went everywhere, but it was deep. So it was long. 30 long. Mark hasn't played his forehand passing shot that good today. And one of the reasons is that Sanford's is putting so much stick into his volleys. They're coming through pretty fast. And then he's so quick at the net, you tend to try to overreach a little bit on your passing shot. Not worrying about playing the man instead of picking where you want to hit the shot and playing it. Captain Mouse, and that's the experience of a man that has won this championship on four occasions. He looks for that one down the line and he's in a good position to get the angle cross court. But if the angle was too good, it would beat him. He'd say too good. He moves back anticipating there an easy put away. That's a lesson there that he could well learn on a shot like that. Sanford's had it. He was in front. He didn't try and overplay it. He hit it firmly into the corner and said, well, pass me. Now that was a shot in the tiebreaker that really cost Philip Poussos in the first set. But he couldn't, he hit it humorously. 15-0. 56 double fault. Average first serve speed. Sampras, 120 miles per hour. Philopousis, 117. That's a bit of a surprise. Philopousis slightly ahead, 106 to 104 on second serve. He's starting at 15. A bit surprised, Fred, that Sampras is out serving Philopousis on pace on the first serve. Yeah, definitely. And overall, Philopousis just a little ahead. That just shows you that Sampras tries to take a bit off on the second serve. Whereas Philopousis elects to still go for broke and have an average of second serve, 106 mile an hour. That's unbelievable. Good tennis. That's a well played point. Great racket work. Court coverage. Super from Sampras. Across there, pretty good from Philopousis too. Yeah, this is one of the better rallies we've seen. It was over quick, wasn't it? Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. Game. Philopousis. Philopousis, three games to two. Good put, good beat, by three games to two. Whoa. All purpose premium office favour. Sure to become Australia's most wanted. The boots make players more powerful. The ball is faster and truer. World Cup 98. It's about those who love the game enough to do something about it. The outside courts at Wimbledon, probably not as crowded as they were. And this time last week, the early stage of the championships, there's still junior boys and junior girls singles going on out there and some mixed doubles, some senior events in both the ladies and the gentlemen's division. This is live action on court number one here, quarterfinals day. Traditionally, if the weather was a little bit better at the start of the championships, this would have been ladies' quarterfinal day. Men would have played their quarterfinals yesterday. The striker is always carrying those string helpers in the back pocket. Would that have annoyed you? I couldn't sort of handle that with something like that that's got a little bit of weight just in the back pocket. Some players put them in their sock. Court is over. Court is over. Again, Sampras. It's free again. I'd really like to see Philippousis try some little chip returns on the second serve. Sampras is winning 70% of the points on his second serve, and that really shouldn't be. I know he's got a great second serve, but you really should be able to hold him down into the 50s. Philippousis is trying to play too good a return all the time, going for too much. He just can't afford to let someone win 70% on their second serves. 15 long. Although Sampras is up two sets to love, it's just a little bit of a worry there for him, only averaging now 45% of his first serves into play, and I don't think he can win the tournament if he serves like that. Start heel off. He's going to find, called good. Sampras thought it may have been down the line a little. He'll find if he gets into the semifinal, he's going to get his second serve returned better than Mark has been able to do it so far today. This match is not over yet. The ho has been very little in the first two sets. It's just one string of the racket. It caused a double fault that opened up the gap in the second set, and there were no service breaks in the first. I feel the persons could struggle through here and win this set, even if it goes to a tiebreaker. Still not a lot in it. 40, 15. Yeah, I guess that's the point I was making, really, that it's there. Sampras is there to be beaten if you want to play the right shots. You've got to figure out a way to return the second serve better. Game, Peter Pussies. Peter Pussies, 4-3, short serve. I'll see your chicken and up your two cheese and onions. Dad, do you mind not eating the kitty? Crap, woman, what's going on? My sister and the kids are coming over for the weekend. Les, I can see what you're thinking. Put those chips back. OK, I'll leave out the salt and vinegar. Very funny, Les. You know they're my favourite. Leave out the cheese and onion. That's mine. That'll be then. Come on, kids. Time to get the cards. Smiths. They're too good. Need to save some money? Well, for Thursday only at the Kmart Stocktake Sale, you can get 20% off auto accessories. We're with you right through to the finals on Sunday. This match an hour and 37 minutes old, as you can see on the scoreboard. Pete Sampras, the number one player in the world, is leading two sets to love. He's done it just with a couple of shots here and there. Philip Pussies hanging in there in set number three, having to get on the board, keep his hopes alive. 13 love. There's been maybe three or four rallies to speak of in this match. It's just been stiletto-type stuff with the big serves and then either the turn or the put-away volley. 13 love. 30, 15. 40, 15. 40, 15. Philip Pussies lost the point, but that's one of the little chip returns that we've been talking about. You don't take a big backswing. Let's have a look at the stroke production here. See, coming underneath the ball, keeping it low, forcing the server to play a shot. Hopefully you'll get a crack at the passing shot off the next one. Third set. That's too good. He's looking for the forehand down the line. Sanctus has got a great repertoire of strokes off that forehand side. He showed us the topspin lob. Love, 15. A little bit fortunate there. A real danger time for Philip Pussies down love, 15. He's half volley touched the top of the net as it went over. 15 all. Oh, he set himself beautifully. It was a good volley from Philip Pussies. Have a look at this. It gets nice depth. He gets down to it. He hits it. Sampras back there and just rifled it across court. Off the back foot and then lets the racket go all the way out towards the target. 1530. Yep, he's pouring the pressure on Sampras. 1540. That's what we would like to do with the Sanctus serve, just exactly what Sanctus has done this game. Trying to keep that ball down low, slide it down the line as he did there. Philip Pussies not able to get in there. It's two break points now for Sampras. 30, 40. Yes, those returns at Sampras's hit. He hasn't tried to come over the ball. He's just used the racket face, coming under it and controlling it low. Trying to get it near the line, forced the big man to stretch it. Still game point, break point. Net for service. Philip Pussies has tried to go down the middle. Now the question is will he go down the middle again? A wild first serve. This is a difficult second serve. It's been very costly for him. And again he does it again. He's just about to pick it. Five games to four. Sampras, in the last two sets, he's donated that break point with a double four. Five-four, he comes back to serve for the match. We're now coming up on the Great Southern Land. It's the middle of the night down there. It should be nice and quiet. Well, here's New Zealand, like I said, nice and quiet. Australia, a Great Southern Land. Just taste those. Beaches and Nazi pats. So big! All fruit salad and nut straw juice. So the treats be a shot of pie. Some golden vales night. Hey mom, can I have some? First point of this service game with Sampras serving for the match. Paul Anna Cohn, Sampras' coach, and his girlfriend sitting next to him. She's over here for the second week. Sampras' girlfriend. Just a good solid two points here for Sampras. It's now 30 love. Oh, nice touch. Little bit fortunate, Philip Persons was moving in. 40 love. Three match points. Thank you. Thank you. Again, Sampras. Well, he finished it off in fabulous fashion with an ace. And he served, well, under 50 percent probably for the match. But he's brought in the big heavy artillery when it's needed. And when he broke serve, there were no breaks to serve in the first set, Nick. But then the second two sets pretty much presented the only breaks coming with double faults from Philip Persons. And that's got to be disappointing for Mark. Yes, the only low point for Sampras there, as I mentioned a while ago, was where he only got in 46 percent of first serves. If he has to win this title, I think he's got to be up around where he normally is at the latter stages of tournaments. That he's going to win is around 55, 57 percent of first serves. He's through to the semifinals where he will play the winner of the quarter-hinder match. Kvichek and Ivanovic, the other two big servers, through as the players wave to their respective fans. And we'll be back with more from Wimbledon after this. On a current affair, Destination Australia. How do we rate in the service stakes? Not as in your face as the Americans. What do tourists really think of us? It's not quick, it's not friendly. Tonight at 6.30. Oh, oh, oh. Good day, mate. What are you drinking? That new West End Gold. Oh, oh, yeah. The new mid-strength beer. It's great, isn't it? Yeah, it tastes like the strong stuff, but you can suck a few around the barbie with the mate. Yeah. Have some fun with the wife and larvae. Yeah. Instead of just falling asleep in front of the insectilized. Hey, you on for another one? Oh, good as gold, mate. West End Gold. The new mid-strength beer. The boots make players more powerful. The ball is faster and truer. World Cup 98. It's about those who love the game enough to do something about it. Having hot Marcelina's pizza, pasta, seafood, or steak could be heading your way. Sam Neel is a superstar cast of a spellbinding television event. Merlin, pick him Sunday online. Back at the tennis on the championship day with the quarterfinals and Tim Sheridan that was very clinical by Pete Sampras but something that we have seen many many times over the years. Well you'd imagine it would be a fantastic lesson for Mark Philopousis to get that far in the event and play a person like Pete. Again he can come back next year having learnt so much. Ok you got a bit of information on scores that have happened around the ground? Well our friend Goran Ivanishevich, he of the cheerful disposition had a three set win over Jan Simirink and of course the thing about Goran is now he's into the semis, his home country Croatia is into the quarterfinals of the World Cup and he was asked what would happen if he and Croatia were to have victories in both. What would it mean to you if Croatia won the World Cup and you won here? Jesus, probably I don't know it would be great, I don't think the whole country would be good, be drunk for the rest of the year including me and the rest of the team and we celebrate and put the rackets in the closet and just come next year. He was very cheerful today, normally they don't let Goran walk past open windows around here but today he was very much on the up. He plays Richard Krychek in the semis and Richard Krychek beat David Sanguinetti in straight sets and Richard Krychek has baby Emma back home to think about and afterwards he was interviewed over in the press room. Richard, well done, looked pretty comfortable? Yeah very comfortable, I actually took 5-1 last 30 and then suddenly the guy wins three games and I'm 50-30 on my serve and I really have to pay attention but I held with three points in a row and then in the end it was a very comfortable match and just the match I was looking for with a little problem with my knee. Yes, how is the body? It's ok, I mean it doesn't always want to listen but I have to slap it and it was ok, like I said this was a good match, quick and early in the day so now I have the whole afternoon tomorrow the whole day and maybe I don't know when I play Friday so basically I got 48 hours to recuperate even more and it's feeling very good, it was a little bit of a scare but this morning was stiff but now the body is listening better and better. And how would you compare your form with two years ago? I think I'm more solid now, I think two years ago I was a little bit more spectacular, I was hitting better shots especially with the return of serve but I'm playing very solid service games and I'm making a lot of returns, I'm not hitting as many return winners but I think I'm playing very solid and I think that's also very important that your opponent knows that it's very tough to beat you, when a guy plays flesh he always has a feeling that it might go off but I think I'm playing one very high level. And I guess your life's turned around a little bit this year because you've become a dad with baby Emma, born in March but not with you, I gather your mum is looking after her and wants you to keep winning so she can keep your baby? Yeah it's unbelievable because before she always wanted me to win because she was happy for me if I won and now she just wants me to win so Emma can stay longer with her, I mean everybody who's seen Emma out of my family and friends they're all crazy about her. Yes the longer Richard's mum babysits the closer he gets to a second Wimbledon title. Let's take a look at some women's results, up the top of the draw things are the way you'd expect them, Martina Hingis too good for Arantxa Sanchez, Vacario dropped a set but went on to win 6-3 in the third. Janna Novotna overcame Venus Williams in two sets and she now has Martina as her opponent and Natalie Talziat in a big upset over the second seed, Lindsay Davenport and at a natural lead the question came up for Natalie in that match and she answered it pretty straight forward, Natasha Zaraba has gone through over Monica Sellers another upset down the bottom of the women's draw and Natasha was asked afterwards how far can she go in this event? Do you think your best will be good enough to actually win the whole thing? I think if I carry on like I played today I have a really good chance, yes. It's been said that your ambition was to be the sort of greatest farmer in the Minsk province, I mean do you have a different ambition now after today's win? Well mind you that ambition was strictly after tennis career so I don't have that ambition right now, it's just something in my dreams and I hope to pursue it after I'm done with my tennis career. Normally very outgoing Natasha and maybe she's practicing to be a farmer going all sort of bush quiet, there's one thing for sure Ken if she wins here she'll be able to afford to buy the farm alright. Well who saw the light Shero, you're the farmer's son and you left the farm and went into television. Still can't communicate. Okay thank you very much Tim. We have our NEC memorable moments right now and we've got some beauties for you today, check these out won't you Hingis? Tennis again and watch this fabulous forehand winner. Tennis again, you can't believe it, lovely shot on the run, cross court forehand and my teammates can't quite believe it either. Kulapustas and Stoltenberg and the Scud's great agility shown here. It was and we back it up again. Beautiful shot, he went off the forehand side in the first set running forehand cross court, look at the ground he has to cover, this is a good pick up from Stoltenberg, that's a marvelous shot. Here's Vinnicevic against Todd Martin, don't do this in practice. Only Goran could get away with it and he's having the time of his life here at the championships. When you're hot it all falls together. And now a very special and magic moment, Fred Stolle, Ken Rosewall, the dead man's doubles, the back court, Fred Stolle got it, Fred Stolle, he's jeaned him up, throw it over and wait for your fans, they're almost as grey as the old fox himself. Well as I said this is our NEC memorable moments, we're really enjoying them and over the finals weekend our commentators will nominate the top five moments and you'll have a chance to register your vote and be in the running for this fabulous prize. The winner will receive an NEC home office package valued at $11,500. It includes a plain paper fax machine, colour television, VCR, printer and the new Versa LX, the most powerful Versa notebook ever made. To win keep watching Nines Wibble and Coverage and then nominate your most memorable moment from our five finals. They'll be revealed on the last weekend of the tournament. And who knows Fred Stolle and Kenny Rosewall, they may be there, I'm still, Timmy Sheridan, is that the way to go? I guess it's fiery, you know, he's still, if there's one shot he can play it's the fist pump, it's just a glorious, graceful, the years fall away and he's become impossible ever since. Okay, right now we're going out to set a court, Tony Travert and Brad Druitt got a good match for us there. Alright Ken, we do certainly, Tim Heneman against Peter Corder, Heneman won the first at 6-3 and he is serving at 5-4 and 15-30 trying to run out this second set. Obviously the crowd's favourite, Heneman and he's the one of course that knocked off Patrick Rafter and Brad, it's been a solid match so far for Heneman. He's played some very efficient tennis out there today, Peter Corder we all know is a great player, someone who can hit winners from anywhere on the court. The reigning Australian champion, Australian Open. Tim Heneman today has served very well, he's been able to shut down Corder's flashy ground shots, he's yet to face a break point and this is about as close as Corder has come to the court. He writes exclusively for one of the morning papers here and his promise was I won't let down my country. So we'll see, that's a bold prediction. Second set goes to Heneman, six games to four. That's Tim's girlfriend Lucy cheering him on from the guest players box and why not, what a great two sets, there's coach Dave Felgate not looking particularly happy but I'm sure inside he's just beaming. Tim Henman's mom and dad there. So we start set number three with Corder serving. Enormous pressure on Tim Henman playing here in London, he's an absolute superstar here in England, he's on the front and back pages and so you can imagine wherever he goes, not only at Wimbledon but anywhere in England, he's one of the most recognisable faces. That's the shot he's been playing well today, it's also the shot that can let him down on occasion for forehand. He's got a beautiful backhand, absolute textbook backhand, the forehand a little bit more flicky, can make errors but today it's been a big weapon for him of 30. Corder fell in his previous match late in the third set of that match, he was able to finish but he sprained his ankle so he's not moving as well as he might normally move, perhaps that's why he's not coming to the net behind his serve as much. This is the fifth time these two have played and they played twice this year, Corder beat Henman in the quarter finals in Qatar and then Henman beat Corder in the fourth round at Key Biscayne. Two all in their head to head confrontations. It's a tough way to have to win a point on your own serve, two attempts at passing the cross court, it was wide open, Corder probably should have hit the winner there, Henman not being able to do too much more than just pop it up so second time around, Corder had no problem at all. Thirty all. Good point now for Henman. There aren't many people playing the game that make better shots than Corder, he's a real shot maker but he's a little fun in the head at times. We certainly saw a lot of that shot making early in the year at the Australian Open, he was absolutely magnificent down there at Melbourne Park, really played what I thought was the best tennis of his career but also what he did down in Melbourne was he was solid in the head, mentally very tough and that's where at times Peter Corder lets himself down. And that's a great point. Prior to winning this year's Australian Open, Corder was a finalist at the French Open back in 92, lost to Jim Courier in straight sets and in his own admission he was scared to death and didn't play well at all. You see the people from mainland have taken the bits out that make it go hard in the fridge. Don't believe me? It's time for the spread tester. See ready to spread. Now what about the taste? Pure butter because it's made from pure cream. In fact all it is is soft butter. Maybe they should have called it that. Butter soft, it's great for cooking too. For those that don't have center quarter or quarter one seats, they look at that big screen outside court number one and watch the goings on. I'm sure they've got the match you're watching, the Henman quarter match there. And we've come back now to the live action with Henman serving at one love in the third set. He's won the first two sets 6-3, 6-4. And Brad the quarter, obviously not very mobile, he's not running without a limp at all. On the last point of the last game when he went wide for that forehand, he really did look like he was battling just to get there. Once again, lack of movement, lack of footwork. A bit of quarter at times throughout his career has been suspect to really giving in pretty easily to his injuries. Last year at the open where he beat Sampras, I believe, and then he defolared because he got a cold. That's right, and really in the locker room, a lot of guys are very surprised that someone would give up such a big match for a cold. That's fantastic, that shot. That's the sort of play we expect to see from quarter to quarter. Really getting a great angle, just dropping the ball down at the toes. Perhaps that experience at the open last year is why court is out here now, though he's not 100 percent. At least he's come out to do his best. Missed it. Let's see how important that miss turns out to be. It's a good shot from the left side of 40-15, it's a 30-all. 40-15, he's done that well all day long, getting himself out of potentially tight situations with a good first serve. I think his serve's underestimated a little bit, don't you, Brad? But I think he's a good server. He gets a surprising amount of pace off the court, he's got a lovely long swing. Very full technique, nothing abbreviated about the swing. He has a little bit of a kink at the back, and I think that's probably where he generates a lot of his power, almost a little whip there. Game to Henman, he now leads two games to love in the third set. Henman leads two games to love. We can imagine the crowd here just absolutely on the edge of their seats. They haven't had a semi-finalist at Wimbledon, let alone a winner, for a long, long time. How about 19-34, 5-6? That's a long time, Fred Berry. A terrific point by both players. Henman on the end of the string there, quarter just pushing the ball left and right and left and right. And in the end, Henman running out of gas. That's a pretty good move for someone only on one leg. He guessed correctly. Playing the ball back behind Henman, Henman having to change directions, really only had one place to go, wasn't enough room to go cross-court. Wouldn't knew that, you see him hobbling at one foot trying to get off that sore ankle. That's a good approach shot, really knifing that one, letting the wrist go through contact. That's a sign of confidence, not just pushing the ball back deep, really hitting that slice backhand into the corner, 30-15. 40-15. That's a good move by Henman, hitting his fifth base. Normally you'd expect a lot more from someone with his sort of firepower on the serve. Henman leads two games to one in the third set. Who's got the brightest deals to suit your budget with a large range of vehicles, from zippy commuters to family, four-wheel drive and people movers? Henman to serve at two-one in the third set. Who will give the answer to that trivia question after this point? So who was the last British player seated before Henman? The answer is Buster Montrum, 1982. Could be turning short backswing, just knocking that one down the line. What a power on this serve, no time for big swings. Look at that, just a little short backswing blocking it down the line. One of the keys there besides the short preparation is a firm wrist so that racket head doesn't wobble when that ball hits it. Well a little lucky, but really, Porter made terrific contact once again on the return of serve. Not swinging wide enough, right in the hitting zone and Porter saying thanks very much. So a little bit of an opening here, 15-30, yet to have break point, Peter Porter. Just missed it. Oh that hurts. If you pick Porter that really hurts. He's had so few opportunities and for him that was a real chance. He thought he'd made it too. 40-30 and now game point for Henman. Jim Henman has served just the three aces, but he serves so many unreturnables. That's second serve. Juice. Going to the Henman forehand volley, that's probably the side you have to play to Henman. He knows his way around the net, been grown up on the grass here in England. There's absolutely nothing wrong with either volley, but if I had to pick one, that's the one that will probably break down the forehand side. Sometimes it just gets a little wobbly in the wrist. Porter a little upset with himself not getting that second serve back in play. So it's game point for Henman. Juice. Full fault number four, really went after that second serve. See Henman's ATP ranking is 18th. His highest ranking ever was 14. He's seated number 12 here. These two have played quite a bit before and Jim Henman, I'd like to take a shot, really showed that he knows Pete caught his game pretty well. Really just stayed there waiting for the cross court forehand. Game to Henman and he now leads three games to one in the third set and he's won the first two. Jim Henman's always had a lot of talent. Everyone around the game knows that. What he's done the last 12 months is really worked hard on his physical conditioning. He's very slight build as we see his girlfriend Lucy. The last six or 12 months he's spent a lot of time in the gym trying to pump himself up, get some real strength in the shoulders and the legs. That's not only to make him able to hit the ball a little bit harder to be able to compete with the likes of Korda, even Izovich and Sampras, but also to make him stronger come the fifth set. 15-0. 15-15. Real dangerous spot here for Korda, already down a break trailing by two sets to love. Got inside for Korda, still though. his APP ranking is three. His highest ranking is two in the world. And he's seated number three here. And Henman's seated 12th. Breakpoint for Henman. Game. Henman gets another break each 4-1 third set. Sunda. Well in command of this match against Peter Korda. He's won the first two sets 6 3 6 4 and he has two breaks in the serving at 4 1 and a third. Trying to get a place in the semifinals to face the number one seeded Pete Sampras. Mr. Love 15. Henman started off the tournament in a very nervous fashion, as I mentioned before, under all sorts of pressure playing in his hometown, which just happens to be the biggest event in the world. He really looks shaky against some pretty ordinary opposition in his first two or three matches. And then him and played Byron Black. Good shoulder turn there by Korda. Pumping that one down the line. Played Byron Black, which was a very tough match and a lot of the other players felt that him and wasn't playing well enough to beat Black. He did in four sets. Just missed 15. Korda really curling that ball. Coming around the outside of it. Falls outside the line, just trying to come back for Korda. Didn't quite make it. That would have given him three break points. Instead, it's 1530. And after him and beat Byron Black, as we all know, he then went on to defeat our own Patrick Rafter. There you see him and his match record 98, 25 and 16. Born in Oxford and lives in London. Prize money over $2 million in his career. And that'll go up at the end of this event, obviously. Whoever wins this title will get about three quarters of a million dollars U.S. Game point now for him. Quarters, quarters struck too quickly. Unable to react. Gives you an idea of Korda's capabilities. He can hit it off the ground either side with a lot of pace with topspin. And he's certainly not 100% in this match. And that's not to take anything away from Henman. Advantage, Henman. That's probably the favorite serve of Henman wide in the Deuce Court. He comes up the tee just enough to keep you guessing. Quarters just stumbled there after he finished playing that shot. He's ankle really giving him some problems. Not able to keep his balance after that very fine return. That's a good shot for two reasons. Firstly, the drop shot is always one that will usually work. It already dies. But especially against a wounded opponent like Pete Korda. Korda really not having any strength there in his legs to push off like you have to and explode to pick up those shorter balls. This is not easy for Henman either because he does know that Korda can't move very well and he has to keep his concentration. He's unbelievable. You're really a very hard guy to pick. It's all a little bit hot and cold. That was the hot part. That serve right into the body. Korda had the answer for that one. Back to Deuce. That's a ten man. Deuce. Henman really trying to play that volley safely. On that occasion he really didn't want to let the wrist go. He just tried to block it. Korda had a little smile on himself. He knows that Tim Henman must be getting a little bit tight. The opportunity of getting to the semifinals of Wimbledon. See Korda's match record this year is 30 and 10. Born in Prague and resides in Monte Carlo. Career prize money just under ten million dollars. Just under a million this year. Head vantage, Henman. This is one of the longest games of the match. Henman's struggling to put Korda away. He's serving a 4-1 with two breaks and he's won the first two sets, 6-3, 6-4. Tim Henman just bouncing himself around. A lot of players do that just to try and keep themselves loose in precious situations. Henman holds his serve. Leads it 5-1. Korda has to hold on or this match will be over. Henman's got a little bit of a bad feeling about this match. Tim Henman at times has had problems closing out matches. It does tend to get a little bit nerdy. Saw an example of that one last game in that backhand volley he missed where he just tried to push the ball. 15-1. But you have to think at 5-1 now, two sets to love. Henman can bring this one home. That's a tough shot at this time. Korda Lennon winning 1-1 lead. 15-1. A high backhand smash. Just too much for Pete's Korda body at the moment. The quarter's hopping around the place. But still manages to hit winners. Testament to both his shot making ability but also his new attitude where he's just not going to quit. Missed it. That's wild. That's a wild miss by Tim Henman. Just not moving his feet, the ball really getting behind him. ience. And now, staying back on Evie in his first serve. He's a little bit scared to really push too far into the court and land on his bad leg. Game quarter holds on when we come back and then we'll be serving for the match. Who's turned the spotlight on the best used vehicles in Adelaide? Who's got the brightest deals to suit your budgets with a large range of vehicles from zippy commuters to family, four-wheel drive and people movers? In a recent comparison by Wheels magazine, one prestige car was voted number one with top performances in every category. It wasn't the Audi A4, nor the Saab 9-5, or even the Lexus ES300. It was the Peugeot 406 SV, unbeaten for drivability, performance, comfort and price. Peugeot, engineered to be enjoyed. In this match, we'll show you the match between third-seated Janu Novotna and seventh-seed Venus Williams. So, stay with us. We've got a lot more good tennis for you. We hope you're enjoying our coverage on Nine's Wide World of Sports. And now, Tim Henman serving for the match at 5-2 in the third step to Peter Korda. Korda's seated third here and Henman's seated 12th. Tim Henman's heart must just be pounding right now. This is without a doubt the biggest service game he's ever had in his career. Start off the bat, he finds himself down to 15 after a fine passing shot by Korda. Well, if he does win this match, which we expect he will, it'll be the first time he's gotten to the semifinals here. 15-all. It's really the only hope Korda has is to try to hit winners because he can't motor around the court very well. 13-15. Henman has really grown in confidence throughout this tournament. Just keeps getting better and better. Match point now for Henman. He's gotten tremendous support from the fans here. 14-15. And rightfully so, he's done a good job. He gives them a lot of hope. 14-13. Always a tough shot, having to run and turn at the same time. Just got himself a little bit lost, a little bit mixed up with footwork. I think Henman thought Korda'd come in behind after he hit the lob over his head. He could hit it straight back down the middle of the court because Korda stayed back. Still a match point. There's an anxious spectator. Some deep breathing in the crowd. Game, set match, Henman. Resets to long. 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. So Tim Henman advances to the semifinals with a straight set victory. 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. And Brad Drewick to Henman looked pretty good, didn't he? He really did. And as I said, he just seems to be growing in confidence. He's obviously got unbelievable crowd support here. As you see his parents on screen here in London. He now goes on to play Pete Zampras. That'll be a good match. He's given Zampras some problems before in the past. And the way Tim Henman is starting to play, there's no reason to think that he can't take on the number one player in the world. Well, he can take him on, but somehow I don't think he can beat him. I may be wrong. So the players leave the court. The spectator is very happy with the success of Tim Henman. We're going to take a break. And when we come back, we'll have the match between Gianna Navatna and Venus Williams. They love winning and they're back to celebrate 18 years of sales. Fashion and taste may come and go, but brains are always in style. It's pretty exciting. The intense competition continues on sales anniversary challenge seven o'clock tonight. Manicure versus massacre plus lipstick Queen Poppy King. Perch Backyard Friday. Welcome back to the championships on a day when we've had no rain interruptions and the Brits have had some good news after that World Cup fiasco last night when they lost. And that was a tragedy on the papers this morning. But this afternoon Tim Henman is through and is still in the championships and he meets with Pete Sampras next. And won't that be something very, very special here? Boy, you'll pack them into the rafters on that particular day. All right. Now, earlier today we saw Janne de Votter up against Venus Williams. Now, we're going to pick up this match where Venus Williams is leading 4-1. But unusually for Janne de Votter, who usually likes to attack and go to the net, she stood back now wondering if this is going to change. Here's Tony Trabert and Liz Smiley. Janne de Votter coming out to serve at 1-4 in the first set. And Liz, are you surprised that de Votter has not served in volley at all? Very surprised. To me, you know, as I've said earlier, I mean, you do what you do best. And if that doesn't work, then you try something else. But, you know, she's got to get to the net. That's where she's most effective. That's where she wants to be. That's where she's going to do the most damage. Well, she tried to serve in volley on that first serve there. It's kind of tough to do it on second serves though against Williams. Out. 15. Well, she was coming on that one too, so maybe she's made up her mind to give it a try, serve in volley. And I agree with you, Liz. The second serves is going to be hard for her to come in behind it because look where Williams is, well inside the baseline. That's just too tough, isn't it? It's hard to get that serve far enough away from Williams. 15. You're going to get a reasonable volley. That's just kicking up. Williams is just saying thank you very much. 15 all. 13. 15. Well, Nirvana is one of the best doubles players and she showed you why there was as good reflexes. Bluff the way through this point a little bit towards the end. This one almost saw an identical point last game. Quick hands. 40 15. Williams leads for two. Williams leads. Well, that's just a great first volley. What you saw just there comes in on the second serve has to really pick it off her shoes. So that's the first game that we've seen Nirvana serve in volley and she ends up winning her serve. Now her task is to figure out how to break the Williams serve, get back on track in this first set. Love the team. The service percentage is up around the 80% mark, which is pretty amazing. And Nirvana's is around about 60%. So a bit of a difference right there. Love 30. Opening here for Nirvana now at four, two and love 30. I'm not sure if this service a bit short if Nirvana will try to attack it and go in behind it. She was coming, but got to make those. She got a ball to try to come in on to. She took it on the run, sort of ran right through it. 1530. By Williams, big stride and long reach. It's a big service, isn't it? Williams has got to look to start coming forward on some of those ones. But Yana really should have been able to do a little bit more with that one. Keeping Williams in the point. She's pretty happy about that one. I wouldn't think so. 30 all. Well, that was a big, big point right there. Well, exactly the same approach as the one before. Quite deep in the court. Nirvana wanted to make sure that it cleared the net, but unfortunately pushed it long. Game point for Williams. I'm surprised we haven't seen more of that from Nirvana as well because, again, that's bread and butter for her. She's got a good position, particularly on the backhand side where she can hit with underspin. It bites off the court and squirts through quickly. She's got to get on the move and make most of them and get into a good volleying position. Great point now for Nirvana. Well, Nirvana certainly made up her mind, hasn't she, Tony, to get into the net? Seen it more in the last couple of games. Playing the great slice approach, which she knows is one of her favorite shots. And she anticipated the ball coming back cross court, so a huge point here for both players. This is a very, very good second serve. I'll be surprised if Nirvana doesn't go in behind it. Nirvana breaks. Williams leads 4-3 per set. Friday night at the movies. I'm so good. And she did it by going to the net, which is what Liz Smiley suggested all along, because that's what she does best. New balls. An awfully high ball toss that Nirvana's always had. Love fitting. Not nearly enough on the approach shot. Way too high, way too soft. Still a pretty powerful shot by Williams-Wenet because she had generated all the pace herself. New balls. So now an opening for Williams. Smart play that Nirvana, instead of playing the regulation backhand slice approach cross court, going in behind her opponent, putting her off balance. And that's, as we've spoken about, one of the difficult things to do with Williams, because she does cover the court so well. And she also maintains good balance. Another good play by Nirvana. Well, smart wasn't it? Nirvana didn't go for the backhand topspin, just a slice below the height of the net. Williams really not bending all that much at all. And Nirvana, as soon as she hit her shot, started forward because she knew it was going to be low, and probably the effort by Williams would be an attempt to drop volley. Thirty-all. Some different tactics there. A wide serve off the second serve takes Williams out of position. Well, it's a good alternative, isn't it, Tony, if you can hit that shot and you don't want to serve a volley. It really opens up the court. It's the backhand approach that Nirvana likes to hit so well. Game point, Nirvana trying to get even at four-all. And she does with good hands. Well, Nirvana liked that point. Well, that bowl of volley got on Nirvana in a hurry, and she reacted beautifully. Well, she knows what to cover up there, doesn't she, Tony? That's very instinctive for her. Four games all. But still, when you're under the gun like that, because she had stabbed at the previous volley, it floated up in the air a little bit, Williams closed in and took a roundhouse swing at it. And she got that forehand volley back in court and knocked off the winner. Four-all first set. They've been playing 30 minutes so far. Fifteen-on. Well, that's a great dip. Fifteen-on. I guess one of the things that Nirvana is counting on is that Williams will make some errors. And if she can keep the ball deep enough and move Williams around enough, she might extract some extra mistakes. Thirty-fifty. Oh, missed it. She played the point well right up until the last shot. She got the ball she wanted. Forty-fifty. The one she missed was Liz. Let's see if she takes a little too big a swing at it here. Got behind her a little bit. Couldn't see it very well. So it's 40-15 for Williams. Big serve pays off for Williams. She now leads five games to four first set. Marcellinus is famous in Adelaide for its delicious home-delivered pizzas. Don't believe me? It's time for the spread tester. See, ready to spread. Now what about the taste? Pure butter because it's made from pure cream. In fact, all it is is soft butter. Maybe they should have called it that. Butter soft. It's great for cooking too. And Navatna is coming out to serve at four or five in this first set, trying to stay alive in set number one. Williams trying to get something out of her eyes and she's ready to go. Missed it. 15. Navatna lucky to get away with that point. She should have done more with both those volleys, particularly the first one, which is very high. Williams is about a meter inside the baseline waiting to return that second serve. Certainly puts an awful amount of pressure on the person serving. That's another reason why we talk about trying to get a high percentage of first serves and even if you have to spin them. 30.50 Good tight point there from the bottom when she needed it. Good jamming serve. Good first volley. She was ready for the next ball as well. She's made some short volleys and I don't know if she do it on purpose, but it's been working because the ball stays low and Williams has to take a big swing at it from a very low position. Oh, that was close. That was a good shot from Navatna and she gets even at five all in the first set. Hit that approach shot from very deep in the court. But once again, the element of surprise and keeping your opponent guessing. One of the advantages that she does have in this match. And when she's in a low position, when she hits that back end, she doesn't try to do too hard, sort of floats. And makes Williams have to generate the pace. You'd be waiting for Jan and Hottner to hit that service return down the line. She finally did. Came to the net. Nearly got herself into trouble though. I think it's a good place for Williams to serve to Navatna on the second serves to her forehand because she didn't want to come in off that as much. She doesn't do it as well, particularly if she serves it really wide out there. It's tough to come in. Well, from the time Navatna started to attack, it's been working very well for her. Now love 30. And Liz, you were saying that from the start of the match. You couldn't understand why Nevada didn't serve in volley because that is what she does best. And she got behind, then started doing it and she's gotten back into this match. Good volley. That was a good volley. Well, that's one way to keep your opponent from coming in, isn't it? You get in there yourself. Mechanically done very nicely. Good angle. 15.30. Well, we've seen Navatna hit that backhand chip a couple of times when Williams comes to the net. That one just wasn't low enough and I think Williams knew it was coming so she really closed. Made sure she hit it before it got below the height of the net. Angle stays down low and it's break point for Navatna. It's hard for a two-hander in particular to play that shot well because they're leaning forward, the ball's not bouncing high. Got to get down with both your hands and Williams is a tall girl. It's further for her to bend than most. Again, I'll be surprised if Navatna does not attack off this second serve unless it's a very, very deep and effective serve. There's a break for Navatna. She leads 6-5 first set. Get me paper we can rely on. Yes, sir. Said reliable. Reflex. Good. For all your office equipment, always rely on reflex. On the pro tennis circuit you make a lot of friends in far away places. Third seeded Yana Navatna coming out to serve for the first set at 6-5. Venus Williams seeded seventh here. Navatna just played an excellent game there Tony. Didn't she break serve? She did indeed and played it her style, which is what you've been preaching this whole match Liz. Let's go service. 15. Missed it. All she had to do is get it between the lines because Williams was heading for the forehand corner. We've seen a couple of strange high backhand volleys haven't we? Yeah. Tony she's handling the low one very well but the high one certainly could have played a little a lot better on that occasion. It's a little bit windy down there though I don't know if that would have anything to do with it. 15. Williams almost couldn't wait for this ball to bounce. You could just see her eagerness. This one here just waiting waiting great preparations there waiting for the ball racket back drive straight through. Lots of pace on that one so it's 1530. Ever since Navatna has been more aggressive and come in more she sort of bustled Williams sounds her rushed her and she hasn't made the strokes with as much confidence because she doesn't have as much time. Great. Good point for Navatna. That was good. Well, very early call by the by the linesman and overruled by Mike Morrissey in the chair so the replay the point. If you are going to overrule if you do it immediately that's the only redeeming thing with players if they there's a delay and then there's no rule they really don't like that. And then his sideline his side of the court and an obvious mistake made by the linesman so the replay set point Navatna. I think that shot one too many times in the set. She's got to go for the lob because Williams is really looking to close on that shot there. She got it. The first couple of times and the bottom Navatna got it with it but last couple of times it hasn't worked well when was on her way in too so it was a tough try. Advantage. Set point for Navatna. Good serve right into the body but Williams had the answer. She moved out of the way pretty quickly be able to hit it inside out. Not too many players that are going to hit a shot like that. Sort of the same shot she hits from the deuce court we serve tight in the back inside she goes out the other way with it. So two set points saved by Williams up until that point you honor and serve just about every serve to the forehand. She missed it. What an opportunity missed. When the bottom did an awfully good job to get her volley back off the net cord. And it was floating and landed sort of semi deep. Set point number three. For Navatna playing her 13th Wimbledon she hopes it'll be a lucky 13. That's a second. That's a bit of a bit of a shaky second serve I'd say just snuck in there. Set to the bottom. Seven games in five. That was a gift in the end wasn't it. Missed passing shot and missed backhand return off the serve. Liz let me ask you something now there's been discussion about about abolishing the let on the serve. If that had been the case Navatna would have won that set on that net cord that dropped short. And how how'd you like that if you're on the other side. Well how's that any different to if it happens in a rally. Well this way you can't even get to it on the serve. I just don't think that's the way a point should end when they're serving to you. This is the start of the second set. William serving. I just don't know if it's a rule with changing it's really going to make much difference I mean if it sort of really neither one way or there but to me you only change the rules of tennis if it's going to make the game better. What they're talking about it'll shorten the matches well how much time you lose with with net cords or let cords on services. How many let cords can we get in a point there. And when the Vatna ball fell over. You'll see it barely bounces at all this and bounces up but watch the Vatna's when she hits it on the net and it drops over and watch how low it stays. Vatna did well to get to that ball well it kind of ran it ran across the net and sure did before it dropped. Love 30. Three break points for Nevada and the first game of the second set she's won the first seven five. Well the wheels have fallen off a little bit of Williams here after missing that easy pass that she really should have made in the last game of the first set. And here comes Nevada on the return of the second serve I think trying to insert instant pressure. Williams is saying the ball was so far out. He's not happy. I don't know I mean the ball's a long way away from the umpire kind of tougher him to overrule. But the pressures get into Williams a little bit here. First time I've seen her act like this she's down 1540 on her first service game of the second set she's lost the first set seven five. Well ever since she missed that backhand passing shot she's had this look of anguish on her face. I don't know if they saw that look that Williams gave to the linesman. She's got to be in the back. And in the bottom left she wins the first game of the second set with a break. Yana Novotny coming out to serve the first time the second set she's broken the Williams serve and leads one love and Liz. Venus Williams has lost her composure and so much so she forgot to read her notes on the court change even so certainly has tiny. She'll have to really settle down if she's going to stay in this match now. She's mad. I don't think you can play this game when you're mad. You have to play it under control. Unless you channel your energies into playing positively instead of just being so mad that you can't play. If you're going to be impetuous and just sort of slap it to ball your chances aren't too good. First Novotny has got to get the serve in to take advantage of that situation too. He will have certainly got some bounce on that overhead. This lob we've seen Yana try and hit an opening here for Williams now love 30. 15. That's the way she's got to keep coming Novotny certainly can't back off now. I think Williams is actually crying at the moment. I think she is Tony I think you're right. I think she was crying on the court change and wiping tears off with her towel. She's worked herself up into a complete state. That's a good serve going away from Williams forehand. I think it's the first ace from either player. 30 all. Novotny is picking the passing shots now. Smart serve wide to the Williams forehand opened up the court. Good coverage on the down the line backhand from Novotny. She likes to hit those touch volleys. They've worked very well for us so far. Game point Novotny. Novotny was there way before Williams even attempted to hit that backhand volley. Williams committed I think a little early as well. Novotny leads two games to the looking for the cross court. She doesn't quite have the instinct up there does she Tony? No. She's also out of sorts right now. She needs to get back to her notes and see what it was that she was doing so well in the first set. This is a replay of a point in the first game of this set. Now this live action. Love to Williams serving. 15. 13. When you're a net rusher you know you're not going to make all your volleys. You're going to get passed occasionally. But you want to figure out a way to win the most of the points and that's what Novotny is doing. That's her only ace. She seems to be getting it back together a little bit more mentally here. In what she has the last couple of games. Williams that is. Game is won. Game to Williams. Novotny leads 2-1 second set. Yonah Novotny coming out to serve at 2-1 in the second set with a break. She won the first set 7-5. And this is experience against youth. And the fuse is somewhat popped on the young Venus Williams at this stage. She does seem to be settling back down. Certainly don't want to show your opponent. Too many emotions like that down the other end do you Tony? For sure. Players are always looking for those kind of things. 15-0. On the line. Saw a replay of that point earlier that Venus Williams thought the ball was long. It appeared to hit on the line. The toss is so high you see Novotny transfer weight forward. You just have to wait, watch the racket, hold it, hold it, then go. 13-15. You see Novotny serve a lot to the Williams forehand. That particular serve just didn't have enough on it. Williams able to take a pretty good shot at it down the line there. Set up the easy volley. 15-15. That slice approach just skidded through and stayed real low. That was a really good ball to handle. Out. Diss. Well another serve to the forehand but Novotny certainly can't let easy balls like that go. That was really a bad error on game point from her there. Good play by Williams. Smart play. She snuck in herself didn't she. I think she was sick of trying to hit passing shots. So she saw Novotny starting to come. She thought well I'm going to come in too. Pretty good low volley she makes there. It was a little bit high but I think Yana was a little bit surprised. That was a good point now for Williams to try to get back on serve in the second set. That's too good. Good court coverage by Novotny for a moment. I didn't think she'd be able to get there. Well the drop volley just way, not really a drop volley was it, over the service line. Enabling Novotny just to lob it up over the head of the closing Williams. Had that been a good drop volley the game would be over. Deuce. I don't know what you think Tana but I feel like Novotny is backed off a little bit here in this particular game. I don't know about that as much as she's got to try to hit that passing shot with a little more pace. She's got to try to hit that passing shot with a little more pace. Williams gets the break back. Two games off. I just think when you're setting a break on Williams you've really got to keep doing what it was you were doing. You don't want to waste a little bit too much time on the baseline in that game. They do have a saying if it ain't broke don't fix it. New tennis balls. I'd like to see Williams serve and volley a little bit more actually. She's got such a great serve. There's no reason why she shouldn't follow it up. Third seeding. She's back in gear I think. She seems to be back in control of her emotions though she is eager. Three times she's served and volleyed and she's up 40 love. What that will do is make Novotny have to go after return a serve instead of just blocking it back. She's got to be able to venture a serve on the second serve and a short second serve at that. And she went into the forehand side that Novotny likes to drive. The backhand side most of the time Novotny slices it heavily. Good game by Williams. She now leads three games to two second set. And Novotny is coming out now to serve at two three. Great stab volley from Novotny. As we mentioned Williams really does hit that inside out backhand from the forehand court extremely well. That full stretch. Really just trying to get a racket on it and that was the result. I always remember Martina Navratilova diving for that backhand volley and that under spin that'll drop volley and fall over. She did that a few times. That's smart play from Novotny. Not a bad play from Williams either. That was the shot that did the damage. Then just being able to pop it over the top of the head. That's the first one we've seen hit over. First top spin backhand by Novotny in this match. And the pace surprised Williams. It looks as though Williams has made up her mind. She's going to try to get in as much as she can. That's a good play there just sneaking in. That'll make Novotny have to change her stroke production. Forty fifteen. That's number two for Novotny. She wins the game and they're level at three on the second set. Three games over. Fifteen. Fifteen over. Fifteen over.
