doubles players 30-15 because they've only ever met before on clay so this is a totally new experience for both of them 40-15 the four years in age that separates them should be to the advantage of Wiesner who is vastly more experienced but they're so close on the rankings aren't they just? in fact Paulus is lower in the rankings than Wiesner but the seedings here were down on the previous list 40-30 do you think the high bounce of rebound ace is going to favor either of them? no I don't think so I think if the high bounce affects anyone it might affect Barbara Paulus because when the ball bounces high to a double-handed backhand player she has a lot of trouble hitting those high bouncing balls so I think Barbara might have a little bit more difficulty out! advantage Wiesner yes she's being worn down that's the way Wiesner likes to play all her opponents we saw evidence of that in Brisbane last week and took a fine performance by Rachel McQuillan to subdue it well Wiesner's a very good tactical player she's got very good ground strokes and she's a good doubles player so she's good at the net as well but she likes to move her opponents around the court and she's got a very good head on her shoulders advantage Paulus well we'll see if Paulus can make her run about because that keen observer of the passing scene Ted Tinling insists that Wiesner is carrying several pounds more than she should got great touch so Paulus after a couple of uses holds the opening service game what makes this new Unix based computer the most desirable you can buy does it come in a choice of colors of course not does it come with a free fortnight frolicking in fun-filled Fiji? afraid not or is it because it's from NEC? that's not bad fair it is NEC's new XL is so reliable it's the only computer with free maintenance parts and labor for three years thank you and as you rejoin us here at White City let's take another look at the movement of Judith Wiesner here she is that's the last point of the previous game which you had to make a fast run forward to the drop shot and here it is not reaching it in time perhaps a tiny bit slow off the mark I have to agree with you there John didn't move very well to that drop shot at all 15 now you can't give Wiesner very many short balls because she's very aggressive off her ground strokes as we saw on that last point Paulus hitting the short ball and Wiesner coming in and attacking that ball 30 now Judith Wiesner is one of the few girls on the tour who speaks many languages her native tongue German and of course she speaks English very well Italian and also a little bit of French so she can communicate with most of the players out on the tour 30 15 what language does she swear in when she misses a shot I think it depends which country she's in 40 15 of Barbara Paulus some stage later we'll ask our director if he can capture her on tape for us so that we can compare the pace about the court game Wiesner one game all just reverting to that marriage business I see there are quite a few married ladies looking through the drawer oh yes well we have Ann Minter from Australia and Elizabeth Smalley also from Australia Ross Fairbank Andrea Temaspare and Judith of course so one game more loud 15 loud 30 Paulus could be a bit of a problem for Paulus down the end where she's serving from 15 40 yes just going for a trifle too much very tempting to do that after a long rally and Wiesner is much more patient than Paulus Wiesner waits for the right opportunity for to attack that's better that was a short ball from Wiesner that time and Paulus was the one who was very aggressive so here's the court movement nicely on her toes the little adjusting steps in between each shot that's excellent game Wiesner serve the breakers serve Wiesner works so patiently for gives her a 2-1 lead for games to 1 word Lastly, I'm going to sing is about Jagged too I got to And you're going to do you hey The Coca-Cola can't beat the feeling. So Barbara Paulus is first out. After that loss of serve, she wants to get a crack at the Biesner serve now and try on level matters. Biesner who of course reached the quarterfinals here last year. He'd hand-meant her and then I think it was Linkvist who beat her. Well Biesner's a very consistent performer on the Women's International Tennis Association Tour. And that's where Biesner can be so dangerous. You give her a short ball on the forehand and she's very aggressive. She's very consistent on the backhand, doesn't make many errors. She likes to slice it a lot but if you give her a short ball on that forehand she attacks it. That was a great backhand from Paulus. She didn't have much room to work with but she had Biesner looking for the backhand cross court that time. Very good tactical shot then. And that's where she's got the advantage. She's got the advantage. That was a very good tactical shot then. Paulus has been attacking or playing Biesner's backhand a lot more than the forehand. 30-15. Well that's great tennis from both girls. It just goes to show just how Biesner is very good tactically around the court. She waits for Paulus to commit herself. Paulus started to lean and watch for the cross court forehand that time. But Judith has such a good head on her shoulders for tactics. Very good thinker out there. Well read. 30-all. It was good anticipation from both players then because Biesner was looking for the... watched Biesner move now for the forehand volley cross court. She should have actually gone down the line with that forehand but she was trying to outsmart Paulus. Good anticipation from Paulus. 21-30 all first set. 30-40. So an uncharacteristic error in mid-court. Her favorite position. So everybody keeping up with what's been happening as they sit in the stands there. It certainly was a blistering performance that and a surprise to see Becker and Lendl both going yesterday. 20-30. 20-30. So there is the break back. Two games all. Well it was Judith that time who became a little impatient and that wasn't the right shot to play at that time. A drop shot. She appears to be feeling the heat a little bit John. It was very humid down there. Wendy and I were both out playing in a Pro-Am this morning early and even earlier than this it was pretty darn hot. It was certainly very hot and humid when we were playing in the Pro-Am. I noticed you were running around quite a bit JB. Two all. Unlucky. One of her favorite shots that very short angled backhand cross court. 15 all. Paulus is going to have to wear out the opposition because she hasn't got the same sort of equipment that Rachel McQuillan had to beat Wiesner in Brisbane. Namely a big forehand particularly from mid court that is much flatter than Paulus's. Paulus's problem is that her forehand carries a lot of top and doesn't penetrate. The backhand's a bit better in that respect. One. 30 all. Well I would think that Wiesner might come in a little bit more against Paulus. Wiesner's a very good doubles player and I played Wiesner at Wimbledon this year and she's excellent on the grass. Good serve and volleyer. Last in of course. 30 40. I keep forgetting how quickly time flies. It's always difficult during January isn't it. But Wiesner is very versatile out there and I think perhaps that when it's so hot and humid if she gets the opportunity she should attack Paulus a little bit more. She has the chance to go ahead again. There is the break of serve again. The things we do. I'm going to go and get my dad's health kit. This health thing you're all into. I suppose there's no chance of you doing anything that's good for you is there David. Me. No chance. Kellogg's Sultanah brand. Don't mention it's healthy and they'll eat it by the box full. So send the point dominating the city skyline here in Sydney. Reminding us that. Summer is here and thank goodness the sun has blessed us again today after an awful start to the week. Send the point the tourist center really of Sydney. Sydney has so much to offer with the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge. It's one of the most beautiful harbors in the world. Australian players love it when they fly back into Sydney. It's you know after being overseas for a few months it's just a great sight to see the harbor. I think it's a great sight for anybody who's flying into Sydney. See there's a little more penetration on that wing. Well she disguised the shot so well no one would have guessed that she was going down the line off that backhand because the ball was so low. It's a very difficult shot to get that over the net. 30-0. 30-0. Second serve. 30-40. Yes that was rather a push that backhand. Well Paulus is making Wiesner play a lot of backhands. I think Wiesner feeling the heat and the humidity just a little bit more than Paulus. Her face is awfully red out there. Gosh you can't blame her. Well left. Well we said this was going to be competitive and certainly it's lived up to those expectations. Long do-er rallies four breaks in a row. Giving you some idea that both these players know exactly where the other shots are going. They read them very well and it takes a very good shot to outwit the opposition. 15-0. Both played Federation Cup for Austria. They know each other very well plus their games and neither one wants to attack the net very much. They're both content to sit on the baseline and just exchange ground strokes. Yes that's on the line. 15-0. That's a very good tactical Wiesner rally isn't it. Yes she pulled Paulus way off the court here as we watch it on the reverse angle replay and then that just leaves the whole forehand court wide open and that's a very good tactical play from Wiesner. That looked like a very tired shot from Wiesner that time. Didn't move her feet at all. It wasn't a big serve by any means and I think that she could be feeling the heat and the humidity just a little bit. Yes. 30-0. She is feeling the heat and the humidity. Wiesner has to come to the net a little bit more because the rallies are lasting an awful long time and she was very smart then. It was a very good play from Wiesner in that last point. 40-30. Game Paulus. So Paulus it is who's wearing Wiesner down. We expected to see the reverse but all praise to Paulus she's 4-3 ahead herself. This is a country of wild places. Places where the maverick runs. Here is the car that you've been waiting for. Four wheel drive and a whole lot more. Cussons guarantee it. Semi finals day at the Holden New South Wales Open. Barbara Paulus and Judith Wiesner. An all Austria battle. At the moment being won by Paulus 4-3 first set. Thank you. How are you feeling? Players are waiting. Thank you. And the first change of tennis balls. Changing seven and nine. Second of those. The gentleman who called it. 15 Paulus isn't I mean Wiesner isn't moving her feet at all. She seems a little tired. Making a few more unforced errors than she normally does. Love 30. She's on her toes here but she doesn't move very well to that particular shot and that's why she came up with the error. Oh in no man's land. Neither in nor back. Caught by the dipping topspin of Paulus who's chasing beautifully. Well Wiesner could have been in a little bit closer to the net on that occasion but I don't think she's moving very well at all. Her movement is something that she could work on but when it's hot and humid as it is today it really takes its toll on her. 15 40. Well there's not too much you can do about shots like that from Wiesner. Paulus on the other hand looks great. She looks rather fresh out there and she's running down every ball just about that Wiesner hits. And it's very difficult right at this time for Wiesner when she tosses the ball for her serve she's looking right into the sun. Game Paulus. So somewhat distressed Wiesner is broken again. She's lost her last three service games. Love to think. I couldn't ask for a better return of serve from Wiesner. Just perfectly placed forehand down the line. 15 all. Let's look now at Barbara Paulus. She moves beautifully across the baseline here. Skipping adjusting all the time. Ready for the short one and the drive there the winner two points to go down the line. Yes she's always on her toes and she takes such short steps and that enables her to get into position for each shot. 30 15. 30 all. Paulus that time didn't get in position for that overhead at all. She went back she dropped her left arm and she turned front facing the court instead of keeping sideways on that overhead. 30 40. So three unforced errors drops Paulus has served but she's still ahead 5 4 for 6. The hands tell the story of a sacred Hawaiian pizza with cheese on the bottom sacrificial ham and juicy pineapple on top. And it's only nine dollars 90 for the medium size but only from the home of the pizza pizza. But get your nine dollar 90 Hawaiian pizza before the pizza God changes his mind. And take away or home delivered and a really big crowd expected again today. They've been marvelously supportive. The people of Sydney for this hold New South Wales championship. Well the crowds were lining up outside at nine o'clock this morning when we arrived. Excellent crowds for five. And he was very slow getting to that ball. She's had a lot of tennis in the past two weeks and when you're not used to playing a lot of tennis at that time it takes its toll physically and mentally. She also played a late doubles very late yesterday afternoon. Again didn't get her feet right. It's been very difficult for some of the girls who are still in the singles and these know when she gets this short ball makes no mistake of at that time keeping all this guessing. But some of the girls who are still left in the singles it's been very difficult for them because they were still in the doubles and some of them had to play three matches yesterday. And actually this was one of those girls who played a singles that went went out and played doubles won that match and then had to play a late doubles again. So that's and she ended up losing the last doubles match. So she had a very long day yesterday so you can understand why she's not moving quite as well today. Well there's a good example again didn't move her feet at all tried to half volley the ball from that very deep forehand from Paulus missed it and its set point. Point. Oh. Do. Well that's very inexperienced isn't it letting your opponent off the hook with a simple error. You must make the opponent win the point at set point. Advantage Paulus. Beeson it doesn't do very much with that volley that time it really wasn't the right shot to play but she wasn't in position to play another shot that sets up the second set point for Paulus. Yes well played. Yes a very well played set point the second time of asking Paulus not trying to make that approach perfect it was just about a foot and a half in but all the pressure on Beeson who failed with the pass so six four after just forty five and a half minutes. And the makings of a mini upset. Fifteen. And if she is just a little bit jaded as we believe then it's rather a difficult problem now having lost that opening set. Thirty. Yes I think Beeson is definitely feeling the effects of playing a lot of tennis yesterday and just the heat and humidity from yesterday and today takes an awful lot out of you. Forty. Forty. Paulus is being very consistent out there she's playing a very smart game just made a few unforced errors but she's making Beeson of work for every point. Forty fifteen. Forty thirty. I believe it or not that's the first double fault today. Well that is the difficult end that Paulus is serving from at the moment because she tossed the ball it's right in the sun and I played a doubles match at this time yesterday and you couldn't see the ball from that end. Yes. Advantage business. Well that's not the way to play these games from 40 love back to deuce and now advantage out with rather a wild forehand. Game. And another the cost to serve all but three of the games were service breaks and here's another to start the second set. Nobody knows. Seven. Nobody knows. Seven. How would you advertise Kellogg's Cornflakes. Well I've got television and tell them that they're crisp and crunch and that I love them. They're in the hip all they need to put on this Kellogg's Cornflakes. That's enough. They speak for themselves. Something that's wholesome and something that you can rely on to get you through the day. Simply irresistible. Kellogg's Cornflakes the simple things in life are often the best. Well Barbara Paulus rather cast away that last game from 40 love. Never mind. She is a set ahead. I remember being very impressed with her Wendy in Seoul that Olympic tournament in 1988. I remember that Olympic tournament. You certainly should. First round and then the Votner in the second both in straight sets before pushing Garrison to a hard first set seven five and then six two to Garrison. Well being able to play in the Olympics when tennis became an Olympic medal earning sport was a real highlight for a lot of players because we grew up never thinking of ever going to an Olympics or playing at the Olympics and the players really loved it. It was one of the highlights of my career. 15 and the players the tennis players loved being with the other athletes were in the Olympic Village and it was great to go to all the other sports and the one that I like most of all was the cycling. I found that to be very exciting that the Olympics was a highlight for everybody. 30 15 modest to prevent Wendy from telling you that she won a bronze medal there with list smiling the doubles. That's a very treasured trophy. Well unfortunately Australia only won 14 medals at the last Olympics so I was very proud to have won that medal with Liz smiley. 1415. We're seeing quite a few unforced errors from Paul us now, especially when she lost five consecutive points in the previous game from being 40 love up. There's a favorite shot. Well the return of serve from Paul this was very deep very difficult and that took these are out of the point virtually and it was a good serve from these. So really Paul us has let these in the back into this match. Let's see if she can reimpose herself now Paul us. Love to think that's a beautiful shot from these now. The attacking coming from Paul us when she gets the short ball that these and knowing that Paul us will close into the net coming up with a beautiful 15. But then again coming up with an unforced error just very sloppy footwork from these now. Good illustration that when you see a defensive shot from your opponent whether it's return of serve or the result of a hard shot to the corner that you must quickly get to the net to take about. Well that was a great serve wide to the forehand court from Paul us that set up that last winning volley. 30 yards amazing though Wendy how many players you see creating those openings but not taking them. 30 40. Good thing she made that point because it would have been rather embarrassing to be loved three down suddenly. Advantage business. Something isn't that about a younger player in the same country as the established star beating her for the first time there's that did you have that with any of the established ladies in Australian tennis. Well you're putting me on the spot John. Correction. Usually one player will have a psychological advantage over the other and happens whether it's just a friendship with another tennis player or whether it's someone from the same country. And look where Judith these are standing to return serve. I think she wants the forehand. I think she wanted the double fold and she almost got it. Advantage polls. Yes good depth there on the approach. Close. And on the reverse angle we can see just what great depth Paulus gets and that sets up the winning volley for her and it's good that she's coming to the net a little bit more because she's hitting some good deep approach shots and taking advantage of those. And finally she holds serve for Bissner 2-1 second set. Another road, another long day. See you later. See you later. To chasing the dream of that day. So, perfect wave, eh? Let's have a coke. Can you tell us where the waves are? There's a man who knows probably as much about the women's game as anybody. Barry Wood travels to more women's tournaments around the world than any other journalist. He files for a great number of journals. Including inside women's tennis. Quiet, ladies. The official publication of our women's international tennis association. Love! Love 15. Bissner didn't move at all to that ball then. Didn't get her feet in position. And then just forced herself really into coming up with that error. 15 all. And they're both finding it difficult to string their winners together. All too often we get a brilliant shot followed by a rather pedestrian loser. 30, 15. Now is a great opportunity for Paulus to attack Bissner because she's won the first set. And she's only down 2-1 in the second. She really should take advantage of having won that first set and run Bissner around a little bit more. 30 all. Because it's quite obvious that Bissner's not moving well. And when your opponent has a weakness you should really jump on it. Especially when it's hot and humid. Make your opponent work as much as they can. Out! 30, 40. And Bissner's backhand is getting shorter and shorter. She's not getting much depth on it at all. Paulus can take advantage of that by being a little bit more aggressive going for a few more shots. 30, 40. And looked at from the reverse angle there's a good wrong footing ploy here. Paulus is expecting it to go the other way the next time round. Here it is. But it doesn't go into the gap, it goes behind her. Out! And Paulus. Out! Out! That's the side to come in. Against Paulus her two hand is much better than that forehand which tends to be rather high like that last one. Out! Out! Due. Out!
