Last night in the Meadowlands, as the seconds ticked down in overtime, Craig Wallanan blasted a shot from the blue line and that sent the Devils on to beat the Blackhawks by a score of 3-2. Tonight, the road trip winds up in Pittsburgh in the Civic Arena, where the Blackhawks take on the Penguins for the second time in two weeks. Mario Lemieux and Paul Coffey are the fan favorites here. Coming up, it's the Blackhawks and the Penguins from the Igloo, the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, live, next, on Sports Vision. Sports Vision's coverage of the Chicago Blackhawks is brought to you in part by Bud Light. Everything else is just a light. And by your Toyota dealer, he delivers quality and value with every new Toyota car and truck. And by your neighborhood true value hardware store, more than just a name, it's our way of doing business. The Blackhawks try to rebound from an overtime loss last night. Tonight, they meet the Pittsburgh Penguins. Hello again, everybody. We've had Foley and Dale Talon from the Igloo, the Civic Arena here in Pittsburgh, the second meeting in the last two weeks between these clubs. The Penguins walked into Chicago Stadium last week and handed the Hawks their heads, 8-3. So that loss has got to be fresh in the players' minds, I would think. Well, I think there's a double jeopardy here after that tough loss last night with 17 seconds to go. It would be interesting to see how the Blackhawks react to that devastating loss. Plus, the fact that they lost 8-3 to this hockey club, their confidence can't be great against this team. And you've got Lemieux and Coffey and people like that, it's going to be a tough game for the Blackhawks. The third game on this road trip, they're going to have to play a very disciplined game, and they're going to have to be wary of the two stars, Lemieux and Coffey. Lemieux is awesome. He's got a 15-game scoring streak, 33 points in that. And Coffey is deadly coming from behind. He's the quickest guy in the league coming from behind and catching up with the play. Shut those two guys down, you've got a good chance of winning the hockey game. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks superstar, Dennis Savard, after being held off the score sheet often lately, has really come back into form. Lost six points in his last two games, had another excellent night last night with a goal and assist. It was robbed by Bob Sauve, his buddy, a couple of times, especially early in the third period. But Savard has played extremely well all season long. And I think he was a little bit embarrassed that last game in Chicago, and he's got something to prove here tonight. I think he tried a little too hard, maybe, to outshine Mario Lemieux, and I think he'd be a little more relaxed. They know, he knows, that Dan Quinn will be out there against him at every opportunity, and they'll try to get away from him and see if he can outplay Dan Quinn. Now, that game last week in Chicago Stadium was a rather physical game. There were several altercations throughout that contest. Sometimes when you anticipate it happening, it doesn't, but I would think that this might be a physical one. Well, I would say that the Blackhawks have an edge in that department. If they're willing to start to do that early, take the body against Pittsburgh, they would have an edge in the hockey game if they were able to take the body against them and be physical, because I think they could intimidate them in that department. That's one thing that the Penguins don't have a lot of, and that's a lot of aggressive muscle-type players. They've got a lot of finesse. They've got a lot of hard workers. They're not too good on the wings as far as scoring threats. They're strong up the middle. They've got good defense, and their goaltending is questionable. This Pittsburgh team really in a dogfight for a playoff spot in the Patrick Division, and home ice has not been a tonic for them lately. They haven't won a home game in a month, four losses and three ties, their last seven at home. So the Blackhawks trying to get back on the winning track. They started off this road trip in good form, dropped one last night. Let's see if they can wind it up tonight in a positive way. The lineups in a moment, but first, let's pause and enjoy the anthem. Can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed At the twilight's last gleaming Whose broad stripes and bright stars Through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watched Were so gallantly streaming And the rocket's red glare The bombs bursting in air Gave proof through the night That our flag was still there O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free And the home of the brave Darren Pang gets a start for the Blackhawks. Pang, it is 30, 40th, 41st appearance with a 3.61 goals against average. He's won 18, lost 17 and tied four, and he's going for his eighth victory in a row, which will tie a record set by Tony Esposito. Frank Pietrangelo out of the University of Minnesota last year played 35 games in the International League. He gets the start for the 11th time of the year. He gets the plays, got a 3.78 goals against average. He's won four, lost five, came up with some big saves in that win at the stadium. Three in this game tonight is Dan Marawelli, the linesman, Ron Asseltine, and Mark Perry. Here's the draw shot into the Pittsburgh zone. Coming to the near side, Hawks trying to hold it in. Wilson does now a quick turnaround shot from Graham, went wide, Savard centered it out to Nylund, shooting. Shot it wide, rebound Graham. Oh, he had an open net and failed to hit it. Came to the near side, and the Penguins able to clear. And the Blackhawks in the first 15 seconds of the game had a couple of chances to take the lead. They thought were unable to do it, now icing against Pittsburgh. Savard's passing behind the net, out to Nylund. He moved in, got all of it, shot it wide, and caromed off the end boards. There, Graham had Pietrangelo down, has the open net, and shot it into him, missing the net. The first shot by Graham, picked up by Savard, the backhand pass right through the slot to Nylund. Nylund cranked it up, the rebound off the end boards, and Graham had the empty net, and somehow missed it. Oh, Graham, who's been very sharp since coming to the Blackhawks in the first 15 seconds, he'll be seeing that one later tonight. That empty net was just glaring at him. Here's the draw, shot down into the Hawks own. Peng put it to the near side, now five fought off a check to clear it to center. And here comes Troy Murray with a long blast, Pietrangelo a blocker save, and Billy Sear enrolled it to center right. Now a lead just up over the stick of Lemieux. Peng trying to clear it, Lemieux stole it, centered one, in front. Here's a shot blocked at the defense. Nice play by Bergevin, and away comes five. Rick five, two on two over the line, trying to cut for the net. Toffey played the body nicely and forced it in behind. Now Callender jams it loose for the Penguins to Sear it, and he bounced one back into the Chicago zone. Dave Manson on it. Now Manson clearing to center, Bill Watson. Watson carries to the line, but the Hawks were changing players. They didn't have any help. Back come the Penguins. Here's a long drive by Kachowski, and Peng stopped that. Now clear to the far side, and here come the Blackhawks. Steve Thomas, four on two over the line, trying to center one, but that hit escaped. Over to the far side, the Penguins move back. Here's a quick out there, and got us failed to hold the puck. Back into the Hawks zone it goes. Centering pass, reflecting in behind the net. Now finally, Corral by Cassidy. Bruce Cassidy for Watson on the right wing boards. He kicked it ahead to center. Noonan got around to check, comes over the line, cuts in, centered it, and Thomas couldn't get any wood on the pass. The Hawks have had a couple of great chances early. Here's Thomas, or Cassidy rather on the far side, tied up along the boards. It's knocked loose to center. Noonan trying to move back in, but it lost his stick, so he swaps it ahead with the glove. And now the Penguins try to move back. Here's Hillier. Andy Hillier over the Hawk line to Wayne Vandorf. He tried to shoot, but Noonan tied up his stick from behind. The Penguins regroup its center. Now they dump it in. And Wilson got it to the far board. Cochran tied up. Here's a long shot from Bustas. That didn't get through. It deflects upstairs. Early in the game, no score. A sports vision at WBBM. Blackhawks with a good start to this game. They've missed a couple of great scoring opportunities. Graham missing an empty net. And Thomas failed to click in a Noonan pass on a 2-on-1. Now the Hawks' Bob Murray feeds Stapleton, who shoots it in. Pietrangelo comes to play it to the near side. They battle in the corner. Stapleton digging it out. Center! What a shot! Shot wide! Cochran from the doorstep, unable to hit the net. Now Cassidy a long shot. That's stopped. Here's Stapleton taking a whack at it, and he couldn't connect. And now the Penguin Fodger cleared it to the far side. Taken by Lee Giffin. Giffin shoots it into the Hawks' zone. Bounces to the near circle. Now a Hawks penalty is coming up as the Penguin Fandorf hits the deck. No score early. The Penguins will have a power play after this on sports vision at WBBM. Hawks have had now three good chances. A good shift for Stapleton. Ludzik in the corner with some great work. Stapleton out front. And Cochran just fails to click on the pass from in close as Giffin got the stick on him. And at the other end, Vandorf pulled down by Bob Murray. And the Penguins get the first power play of the game. Oh, Coffey got it to the near corner. Lemieux, he left it there. And Quinn's centering pass goes through to the far point. Coffey is there. The long shot hits somebody in front. Now Quinn on the far board. And Quinn trying to center one. Picked off by Savard. Hawks move two on two. Savard in over the line. Criss-crossing to the near side, but it's knocked off his stick. And here's Charlie Zimmer, the Penguin veteran. He got it to center. Now a lead for Quinn over the line. Got it to Fodger. Right in. Shoot. Nice rebound. And he got to it before the Penguin attacker could get to the loose part. Peng making his best save in the early going. Fodger breaking it in the left side. Quick little pass. Fodger top of the circle, lets it go. Peng makes the save. Juggles. Reaches in front to get the rebound. Charlie Zimmer right there to pounce on the rebound. And that's Zimmer's territory from the crease end. Faced off will be to the right of Peng. Now the draw. Fodger in the deep slot. Put it to Coffey on the far side. Back for Fodger. Jugg Fodger at the near point. Up the board for Lemieux. He centered one. It did get through Bergevin. Back of the net it goes. Bergevin battles there with Brown. He'd like to freeze it if he can, but Brown dug it out. Got it over to the far side. Now Brown plays around the board to the near point. Held in by Fodger. His pass deflected away nicely by Larmer who anticipated the pass. And it winds up back in the Pittsburgh zone. Forty seconds for the Penguin power play. Here's a pass not clicking. Back into the hog zone. Manson will take over. Trying to clear it and does get it to center ice. Now Rob Brown. His pass went right to Troy Murray who fires it down all the way. And one more rush for this Pittsburgh power play. Here's Coffey. Flipping it over the line. Bounce to the far corner. Coffey is there. Put it to the line. Searon held it in. To Coffey along the board. Now Coffey to the far point. Waves a man in front. Takes a long shot. Pang stops it. Rebound to the far side. Ludzig jams it loose to center. It's a two on one. Bob Murray just out of the box over the line for Stapleton. Blocked out the defense. Billy Searon broke up the play nicely. And both teams now back at full strength. Searon cleared it ahead but right to Ben Wilson. Wilson feeds Noonan. He gains it to the line and was tied up on the play. Only put it around to the near side. Hawks able to hold it in. Bill Watson's pass for Noonan. He was too well covered in front. Callender tries to clear. Couldn't. Wilson held it in. Wilson near point to the deep slot. Noonan's long shot is blocked. Troy Loney leads the Pittsburgh rush back. His pass is broken up. Now taken by Watson. Four five over the line. Rick Vibe knocked down by Hillier as he tried to make a one on one move. And the Penguins clear it back into the hog zone. Bob Murray. Forced a turn deep in his own end. Now gave it away. Loney in the far corner but a penalty is coming up here. To the Penguins with the score. Nothing, nothing. Back in a moment on sports vision in BBM. The first penalty for the Penguins. The first power play from the Blackhawks. Kachowski for high sticking at six forty six. Last two games the Hawks power play is clicked in nicely. Four of the last nine. Here's the draw. To the Penguins. And Bodger clears. Over to the far side. Dan Quinn is there. His pass deflecting to Larmor. Steve Larmor hits the Penguin line to the far side. A drop pass broken up and Cassidy held it in. And then his pass is stolen and Hillier clears it down all the way. Here comes Bob Murray as the Penguins pull right back to line up for a cross. Murray forced to dump it in. Over to the far board it goes and then it bounced loose to center. Bob Murray beating ahead broken up by Bodger. Now Cassidy got it back. Ruth Cassidy in over the line. In traffic lost the handle and the Hawks will have to regroup at center ice with a minute remaining on the Chicago power play. Dennis Savard at his own line. Turning quickly there. Gave it to Cassidy and the Hawks having trouble advancing the puck. Now a pass off the stick of Savard taken by Hillier and he clears it down all the way. Ryan Noonan tries to work it in. Noonan hits the line. Rolled it into the near corner Troy Murray rings it around the board. Five to the far point. Now to the near point Noonan. Deep slot to Wilson. And Wilson rolled it back to Noonan. Noonan at the near point had it go off his skate back to center ice. Noonan tries to flip it ahead. Here's Steve Thomas centering one and blocked at the last second at the defense. Out to the line it goes Wilson. Around it Shaq now the long shot and a stay by Pietrangelo. Then the puck knocked down with a stick above the shoulder or the whistle just as the penguin penalty expired. What a play by the forward Loney. He was the last guy back and he was able to get the stick on the potential pass. Troy Murray would have been in all alone as Thomas tried to get it to him. And Wilson after the good play by Loney let one go was deflected by Pietrangelo up into the air. Thomas knocked it down with a stick above the shoulders. The penalty had expired so the face off goes to the neutral zone and not the length of the ice. Both teams back at full strength with 11 minutes to go in a scoreless first period. There's the draw to Manson. He flipped it over the line taken by Staple and shooting. He shot it just wide and Ludzig just barely missed tipping that. Back to center ice it goes. Buskus on the far side is tied up. It's knocked back into the penguin zone. Now Wayne Vandorf carries it to the Hawk line and flips it in deep. Bang to the near board for Ludzig. He took a hit but the Hawks carry on. Bergevin his pass off the stick of Staple and now Buskus played it to the left wing side. Vandorf deflects it to Jim Johnson. He put it ahead just too far for Brown. Otherwise the Penguins had a good chance. Glenn Cochran turning in his own zone. Gave it to Mark Bergevin. Now Troy Murray. He'll shoot it in as the Hawks go for a player change. Roger bounced it to center here's Dave Hunter over the Hawk line. Put it to Lemieux near side. The long shot didn't get through. Deflecting in behind the net. Taken there by Troy Murray. Murray cleared it to Vive at center. Break five over the line tries to split the defense. He did and he went down and a penalty is coming up here to the Penguins as Vive draws a Pittsburgh penalty. It's nothing nothing on sports vision and WBBM. Break five with some nice moves at the Pittsburgh blue line. He splits the defense. Hillier and Bodger. He faked that he was going to go wide cut into the middle. Had a step on Bodger but was hooked from behind by Hillier. The second straight power play opportunity for the Hawks. They're 0 for 1. Hawks are third overall. The Penguins are 19th overall in penalty killing. Here's the draw to the line Ben Wilson. The Noonan at the near point. He threw it into the corner. Graham took a bump there. Coffey dug it loose. And Coffey able to push it to the Hawk line. Taken there by Steve Larmer. And he'll retreat behind the goal. Now Larmer up the middle for Savard. He hits the line. Dropped it for Ben Wilson. Right in. Fires. Peter Angelo. Ben Wilson walked right to the doorstep before cranking it up. And Peter Angelo with a one on one situation won that battle. Savard picking up the pass at the red line from Larmer. And behind his own net he drops it to Ben Wilson. Cranks it up. No one near him. He has all kinds of room. He had Peter Angelo beaten it seemed. But somehow Peter Angelo reaches back with the glove. The puck was by him and somehow got the glove on it. Everyone backing off giving Wilson lots of room. And a good shot by Wilson. A better save by Peter Angelo. Face off to the right of the Penguin goal. Here it is. Over to the far side. Looney and Noonan both hit the deck. Noonan trying to jam it loose. Now Looney throws it to center right. And the Hawks control there. Noonan back over the line. To the near board and Larmer he's tied up. Graham dug it out to the deep slot. Wilson. He put it to Savard on the far board. Back to the line and Wilson. Wilson in the deep slot. To Savard. Tees it up. Doesn't shoot it though. Side of the net for Graham. Trying to stuff it in. It rolled off the end of his stick. Hawks keep it in. Larmer in the near corner. Centered one through to Savard on the far side. He put it to the line and Wilson. Who's forced to turn but held it in beautifully. Got it to the near point and Noonan. Now Larmer run over by Bodger on the near board. Four players battling there. Two more join in. Hawks dig it out. Here's Wilson. The drive. Peter Angelo the save. And he gave no rebound. With Savard on the doorstep. And now a big scrum in behind the net. Savard was all alone hoping for a rebound. And took a whack I think at Peter Angelo trying to jam the puck loose. And the Penguins took exception to that. Troy Lane alone he came in after. And put Savard heavily into the end boards. Then Savard took exception. Took a poke alone. But Ben Wilson has had two marvelous chances on this power play. The first time he tried to go to the glove side. He tried to shoot this one higher. But Wilson with a good play to keep it in at the line. The linesman ruled that it never totally crossed the line. Prior after that Wilson moved in. Cranked one up. Tried to go high this time. And Peter Angelo wouldn't go for it. 28 seconds remaining on the penalty. To Hillier for hooking. But now alone he goes to the penalty box. As does Ben Wilson. Ben Wilson came in after the fact and got involved with Troy alone. So they'll get offsetting minor penalties. Take ten for identification. This is Chicago Blackhawk hockey. You're watching the station that brings you the Blackhawks, the Bulls, the White Sox and the Sting. Sports Vision. Half a minute remaining on the Chicago power play here. The draw just outside the penguin line. No score with just over eight minutes to go in the first. Now coffee from the draw clears. Here's Bruce Cassidy on the last hog rush for this power play. Feeding Bob Murray who dumps it in. Over to the far corner it goes. Five knocked down there and Dan Quinn clears it down all the way. Both teams are now back at full strength. Bob Murray long feed to vibe. It was on the stick but unable to hold it. Back tumbled it. Back comes Quinn over the line. Quinn tees it up. Fakes the shot. Put it to the trailer. Johnson is shooting the same rebound. And a save by Peng. Brilliant rebound save as the Penguins get been at a glorious chance. Cassidy. Hawks try to clear but can't get it out. There's Cassidy deep in his zone in. And he shot it to the neutral zone. Hillier has it there. Gave it to Hunter back over the line. Centered one. Cassidy stole it nicely and rolled it to the Pittsburgh end. Taken by Hillier. For Coffee in full stride at center. He comes to the line. Shooting. He scores. Coffee on the move at center. Nobody's going to catch him when he's in full stride. And he fired it low to the glove side by Peng. One to nothing Penguins. Coffee can really get motoring his soul with such ease. He glides over the ice. Hawks back in. He's inside the line. Half slap shot. Takes it back about two feet. And blows it by Peng with a low shot to the glove side. Hock defense backing in. Giving Coffee the blue line. He was in 10, 12 feet inside the line. And pumped the low shot past the glove hand of Peng. Coffee scores his sixth of the year. Four of the six have come against the Blackhawks. Coffee from Hillier at 13.08. And the Penguins on top one to nothing. Now from the draw. Everybody battling on the near side. Huck came loose to Lemieux and with one hand on the stick he's able to roll it ahead. Play broken up though. And now the Penguins will dump it in. Here's Dave Manson ahead for Ludzik at center. Steve Ludzik over the line. Stick handling. Put it to the far side. Cochran shot dribbled wide. Back of the net it goes. And the Penguins move away. Hillier up the board for Simmer on left wing. Charlie Simmer turns on the near side. Now threw it across but it bounced loose to center. And the Penguins regroup there. Now Johnson mishandled it. Cochran crossing the line but has no help as the Hawks were changing. And here comes Lemieux back. Mario Lemieux. Put it into the Hawks zone and Simmer offside on the play. Six minutes to go in the first period. 1-0 Pittsburgh on sports vision and WBBM. The broadcast rights to this game have been granted as sports vision and WBBM Newsradio 78 by the Chicago Blackhawks solely for the entertainment of our audience. Any reproduction or other use of this program without the consent of sports vision or BBM is prohibited. Here's the play in the Chicago zone. Bruce Cassidy shot it to center ice. Doug Bodger dumps it right back in. Bang. Cleared it to the left wing board. Steve Thomas had it knocked away by Loney. Now Thomas got it back. And Huck is cleared back into the Pittsburgh zone. Now Bodger fired it into the Hawkins. Taken by Noonan. Ryan Noonan works his way to center. Backhand pass right to Thomas. Moving and fires. Right on and a save by Pietrangelo. And a substantial edge in the scoring chances in this period to the Hawks, but they haven't been able to find the net yet. Nice stick handling by Noonan through the middle of the ice. The backhand pass to Steve Thomas. Thomas tries to put it high over Pietrangelo, who's well out of the net. The Hawks have been trying to pump it through Pietrangelo. Bit of a fake shot. Go wide on him as he comes way out of the net. The Hawks fake and go wide. They'll get an opportunity for an empty netter. Face off to the left of Frank Pietrangelo. Now the draw. Ludzik wanted to vibe, but he couldn't pull the trigger. Paul Coffey flips it back into the Chicago zone. Taken by Manson. Manson harassed by Lemieux, who stole it. Center run. Bouncing around in front. Chopped right through the goal crease. Lemieux tries to center. Pang picks it off, and he'll hang on to it. Mario Lemieux with some aggressive work in the Hawks zone. Lemieux putting chase. Gets by Bergevin, who tries to interfere with him. Lemieux showing some good strength and balance. And then Chase's Manson gets the puck, dumps it out to the side of the net. The Penguins fail to get possession, so do the Hawks. It's a backhand attempt to the side of the net, and then Pang just freezes it. One to nothing in favor of the Penguins. Just under five minutes for the first period. Face off to the right of Pang. Here's the draw to Ben Wilson. Heared it to the far side. Now a penalty coming up here. We'll tell you about it in a second. One-nothing Penns on Sports Vision and BBM. Ben Wilson carrying the puck to the left of Pang. Makes the pass and then gets the stick up on Giffin. Giffin eating some lumber as he four-checked Ben Wilson. Ben Wilson goes to the penalty box. The Penguins' second power play of the game. They're 0-4-1. Here's Doug Bodger for Lemieux over the line. He's tied up, lifted to the corner. Oh, everybody battles away. It's cleared behind the net. Pang put it back to the near side. Held in by Bodger. Over to the far point, Coffey. Cleared it into the corner. Simmer is there. Back to the net for Lemieux. Ariel Lemieux sets up shop. And it will make sure Dan Quinn, all alone outside the goal crease. And it's 2-0 Pittsburgh. Well, Lemieux taking a page out of Gretzky's book, getting set up in behind the hot net. Gets everyone facing him with their back to the front of the net. Lemieux is taking a look. He's the only one that can see who's coming. And Quinn sneaks in. The quick little pass past Bob Murray. And Quinn from the crease puts it in through the legs of Pang. Lemieux is behind the net. Now, everyone's looking at him. No one's looking at the front of the net. He's got everyone right where he wants them. He sees Quinn come in. A perfect pass. Quinn with the one-timer. Two-zip power play goal for the Penguins. Dan Quinn from Lemieux and Simmer at 15-56. Mario Lemieux now has 106 points for the year. 52 of them have come on the power play. And that extends his scoring streak to 16 in a row. Here comes Watson, a drive. Didn't get it through. Steve Thomas whiffed on a potential shot. Penguins move back. Brown over the hawk line, cuts in front. And a puck jumped over his stick. And Watson takes it away. And now a Penguin player went crashing into the goal, McElwain, and it came off as boring. Also, Brown paid the price, too, as he was leveled by Nyland. Hawks come down the other end and had a couple of good chances. The first shot by Watson was blocked by the defense. Thomas had a chance. He fanned on it. And at the other end, Nyland with a good solid check on Brown as he sent Brown flying. Well, as the teams were changing players, a little yapping going on down there, but that's all it is for the moment. Van Dorp coming off and taking exception to that hit on Brown, but that was a clean, solid hit. Our next Blackhawk game on Sports Vision will be Friday at 730 when the Hawks take on the Winnipeg Jets. Join Pat and myself live from the Winnipeg Arena at 730 on Sports Vision and 720 on WBBM. And a reminder, the Hawks host the Boston Bruins on Monday night at the Chicago Stadium, game time on WBBM 720. Oh, this is a very frustrating period for the Blackhawks. They've had a tremendous edge in scoring chances. Had an excellent start to it, but they find themselves trailing 2-0. Now the play in the Chicago zone. Nyland trying to clear, but Quinn held it in. They wrestle along the far board. Penguins dig it out. Buskus a long shot deflecting up into the seats. Penguins can seem to do no wrong in the poor period they've had against the Blackhawks. Everything they seem to touch goes in. They scored eight goals at the stadium. Coffey's shorthanded goal at the stadium that turned the game around, made it a 5-2 game, and that took the steam out of the Hawks. And the Hawks had a two-man power play. Coffey came out of the penalty box. The Mew fed them beautifully, went in on a break and scored, and that was the end of it for the Hawks. And his goal here to start things off at 13-08 has certainly started things off from the right foot for the Penguins. Gary Nyland back of his own net, beating Savard who deflects to center. Buskus dumps it right back in. Nyland to Graham on the right-wing board. He shot it to center. Buskus has it there and sends it in once again. Now Dennis Savard, bounce one loose to Graham at center. Graham crisscrossing over the line, trying to beat Serin. He did to the corner, then centered, but nobody home in front for the Hawks. And the puck back to center ice. Dave Manson, a long shot from there. Pietrangelo put it to the corner. And Coffey gave it to Serin. He got it ahead for Hunter. Dave Hunter shovels it ahead. Hawks pick it off and Larmer banged it to center ice. Now it came back to Larmer. Steve Larmer shooting it in. Coffey is back. Coffey motors on the far board. Bounce one ahead. Manson broke it up. And Coffey now in the neutral zone. With two minutes to go in the period. Charlie Simmer in traffic, forced to dump it in. Bergevin back. Got it to the far side. Held in. Here's Simmer's side of the net. Centered one. Locked out the defense nicely by Bergevin. Back of the net to Simmer. He pulled it out in front of him and shot it right through the goal mouth. Hawks move the other way. Rick Five on the right wing board. In over the line. Tied up by Coffey though, and Simmer takes it away. Charlie Simmer to Coffey. He lost the handle at center. Now bounces around to Hillier in his own end. Randy Hillier's pass picked off by Manson. Now Callender got it back. Jock Callender over the Hawk line to Hunter. His shot is deflected to the corner. Santa Paz has it there. Shot it over everybody's head back into the Penguin zone. Now Jim Johnson for Pittsburgh as we go into the final minute of the period. He shot it to the center ice area. Taken there by Johnson. And he flips it into the Chicago zone. Bruce Cassidy is back. Gave it to Watson. Out to center ice for Thomas. Steve Thomas over the line. And he's rubbed off by Badger on the near board. Here to the far side and back to center ice it goes. Half a minute for the period. Bob Murray in the neutral area shooting it in. Peter Angelo got it to the far side. Taken by Steve Gaddis. Out to center for Hunter. He dumps it back into the Hawk zone. Back of the net Brian Noonan took a hit. A centering pass deflecting to the line. Buskus held it in to the corner. Hunter but not enough time to make a play from there as the first period has come to an end. So the Pittsburgh Penguins grab a 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes tonight. Paul Coffey started it off scoring from Hillier at 13.08. And then the Penguins capitalizing on a power play chance. Dan Quinn from the doorstep assisted by Lemieux and Simmer at 15.56. The Penguins had nine shots in that first period and the Blackhawks had eight. News weather and sports coming up on the radio side on television. We're going to have a feature on Chicago's winger Steve Larmer. That will be on television in our first intermission tonight. Which is upon us at the end of one. It's the Penguins two and the Blackhawks nothing. Other action in the National Hockey League. A couple of afternoon games today in the Boston Garden. The New York Rangers went in there and came away with a 4-2 victory. And in Philadelphia the Flyers beat the Winnipeg Jets by a score of 4-3. Other Norris Division action tonight. The St. Louis Blues are hosting the Quebec Nordiques. They'll be getting started shortly in Toronto in the second of the home and home series. The Red Wings and the Maple Leafs are scoreless in the first. Montreal on Long Island. The Canadians have a 1-0 lead in the first period. Minnesota is playing in Los Angeles later. In Edmonton the Oilers and the Hartford Whalers just getting underway. And in Calgary the Vancouver Canucks and the Calgary Flames. Also scoreless in the first period of their game. Here tonight the Blackhawks had a good first period. And really with a little more sharpness around the net in the first couple of minutes of play. The Hawks could have given themselves a lead. But they failed to capitalize on a couple of great chances early. Then the Penguins started to take over. And it was their two stars that were the difference on their two goals. Well Peter Angelo came up with a tremendous period. The Hawks had some great chances. Graham missing an empty net. Steve Thomas had a great chance. Ben Wilson with two tremendous chances. And Peter Angelo robbed them both times. And a couple other chances. The Hawks just shot wide. Or failed to complete a pass on two-on-one situations. They had an excellent period but nothing to show for it. It's got to be frustrating. They played well enough to get a point last night. Here they come out of the gate well. Have a good first period. And find themselves trailing. That's what a guy like Coffey can do to this hockey club. He turns them on. As he did in the stadium. A quick burst up the middle. Bang. It's 1-0. And then he's scoring the power play. So the Penguins have the lead. Stay with us. We'll come back for some information with Steve Larmer. After this time out. After one period in the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh. It's the Penguins two. The Blackhawks nothing. Steve Larmer has silently become a mainstay on the Blackhawks. Since coming to the club in 1981-82. Larmer has also become a fine defensive player. In the past six years. Well I think over the past six years. I think I've matured and grown. And I think when I first came here. I was strictly a one-dimensional player. Strictly offensive. And I think in the last couple of years. I've learned to play well defensively. And I think it's helped me. I was always taught that you know. You don't say anything unless you're spoken to or whatever. But you know. I like being quiet just to sit back and listen. Because I think you can learn a lot from listening to what other people have to say. Over the past six years. Steve Larmer has quietly developed into a strong offensive and defensive player. Steve hasn't missed the game since turning pro in 1981-82. And is bidding for the Hawks Ironman record held by John Marks with 509. Teamed often with star center Dennis Savard and Rick Vive. Larmer definitely capitalized on the scoring chances. When you're playing with Dennis Savard. You have to realize that your job is to score goals. And I think that's been the case in the past. Is you know you're out there. He's going to create opportunities for you. And you have to be there to put them in. Well often paired with Savard. Larmer has had a long time professional relationship with another Blackhawk. Steve Ludzik. Well we've played together on the same team now. I think this is our 10th year. We've played three years as a junior. A year in Moncton together. And six years here. So we've been together for a long time. He's a diligent worker. I mean he works very hard. And he's a physical player. He always takes a body. And he does a great job out there for us. I always get him. I think I know him better than his wife does. We played junior together when we were 16. And we ended up staying together our first few weeks anyways at our boarding house. And I had to move because I ate too much. And he's a pretty easy guy to get along with. But almost the opposite too. He's more laid back quiet and reserved. And I'm more of the jokester and the prankster. And I try getting him going. In addition to playing the power play. This season Larmer has added penalty killing to his repertoire. I really enjoy it. I've never really had the opportunity to do it in the years past. But it's been a new challenge for me this year. And it's been a lot of fun. You know especially killing out there with Dennis and that. You know our main goal is to make sure that we don't get scored against. But when the opportunity arises we want to take advantage of any chances that we do get. This season Steve scored his 200th career NHL goal. But there are some other goals that he has in mind. Well just to play really well. And have a better year than I did the year before. And to be as consistent as I possibly can. And to contribute to the team as much as I can. I'd like to play on a winning team and hopefully win the Stanley Cup someday. You know if not this year then in the future. And you know they've made changes around here this year. And I think they're working towards that direction to bring a winner to Chicago. Larmer will continue to quietly strive to bring the winning attitude to Chicago. So far in 52 games this year Steve Larmer has recorded 54 points. Larmer has never missed a game in his career with the Blackhawks. This is 452nd straight game. In that span he has accumulated 466 points. So it's been a tremendous career for Steve Larmer. Larmer also holds the record for most assists by a right winger. Breaking the record set by my good friend Jim Pappen. After one in Pittsburgh it's the Penguins 2, the Blackhawks nothing. Pat and I will be back with highlights after these messages. The Penguins have a 2-0 lead. After 20 minutes of play here in the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh. Boy the Blackhawks had a terrific start to this hockey game. Really could have done themselves some big favors early. But a couple of squandered opportunities and then a couple of big saves. And all of a sudden the Penguins got their jets going. Well one of the reasons the Hawks have been successful of late. Here's a great goaltending timing in the opposition. Tonight it's Peter Angelo in the first period. The Hawks had a great start. Had a lot of good scoring chances. Ben Wilson had two tremendous chances. Steve Thomas had a couple. Dirk Graham missed the best chance right off the bat in the first shift. Had an empty net and somehow didn't put it in. And then the Penguins Paul Coffey just turned this team on. With a great rush up the middle the Hawks back in. And when Coffey's coming at you at full speed. You get a little nervous and you're back in. You give him an extra room and he can shoot it on the fly. And he beat Pang low to the glove side. Coffey's at the red line and hardly two strides. And he's inside the Hawk line. He just glides on his skates and lets it rip at full speed. He gets a lot more momentum behind the shot because of that great speed of his. That made it 1-0 at 13.08. And then on the power play at 15.56. Mary Lemieux is in behind the net. Now everyone turns and faces Lemieux. Lemieux is the only guy that can see what's happening in front of the net. Quinn sneaks in a quick little pass. Quinn with the one-timer through the legs of Pang. Pang wasn't quite ready. He was looking at Lemieux. He looked to his left, looks to his right. Trying to get the stick in front to prevent the pass. But the pass missed the stick. And Quinn put it through his legs for his 18th. The Penguins have a 2-0 lead. It's got to be frustrating. I thought the Hawks had an excellent first period. Peter Angelo is the difference. He was marvelous. Well, the tough thing I would think for the Black Hawks at this point is to try to maintain their poise and play the same way. If they get 40 more minutes like that, they might be in good shape. Well, I'm sure they'll be reminded of that. And I'm sure they'll be reminding themselves, listen, we had an excellent first period. Keep going. We're getting our chances. Sooner or later, we're going to get one by Peter Angelo. And we've got to take advantage of our power play situations. We had two in that period and didn't get many chances. Ben Wilson had a couple on the one power play. And that's it. All right. The Blackhawks trail. The Penguins 2-0 at the end of one. Back with period two in a moment. Pat Foley and Dale Talon back in the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh. The Penguins have a 2-0 lead over the Blackhawks as we get set to start the second period. WBBM's John Hultman and Felicia Middlebrooks get you started and on your way every morning with news. Steve Destler's weather. Tom Scher on sports. Traffic and more on WBBM News Radio 78. And a reminder, hear the official Illinois State Lottery drawings every night right here just before seven and later on hockey night. It's the Illinois State Lottery drawing right here on News Radio 78. The Penguins had nine shots in that first period. The Blackhawks had eight. I would say in the scoring chances at minimum it was even and maybe the Hawks even had an edge. I'd say they had an edge definitely. And some of their chances they shot wide or just didn't get through it hit a defenseman or deflected off a stick. One situation Troy Murray would have walked in all alone. The pass to him from Thomas hit Loney's stick and he was skating with his back to the play. Didn't even know the pass was coming. All right. Here we go with the second period from the faceoff. Buska shooting it in. Wilson to the far side. Put it behind the goal of Nyland. Now left wing boards in Larmer. Steve Larmer has some room to center. Shovels it in deep. Going back as Bodger now lost it to Larmer to the far side. And Graham his pass hit a skate bill and Hunter moves away. Dave Hunter fires it into the Hawk Zone and Peng had to be careful with that. Steered it to the corner. Now they battle there. Buck came free to the Blackhawks. Savard who rolled it to center and Graham. Dirk Graham over the line. Had it knocked away to the near side. Serin for Pittsburgh. Able to clear it to the neutral area. And Quinn gave it back to Serin. He bounces it into the Chicago zone. Dirk Graham back for it. Able to feed Savard who scoops it to center ice. Now Paul Coffey. His pass hit the skate of Simmer carried on by Lemieux. Lemieux to the near side for Callender his long shot. Peng the save and wound up right on top of the net. Now in behind they scramble. Here's Troy Murray gaining control and he's going to take an icing call here. As the Hawks were scrambling a bit in their own zone. That shot appeared to hit the glove of Peng and almost trickled in but just went over the cross bar. Larry Lemieux lost control of it. Penglund's Callender takes a long shot. Peng makes the save. Got a piece of it with the webbing. He was looking to go forward with it. Thought he had it. And luckily for him it just landed on top of the net. Out of the webbing and on top of the net. The Hawks Troy Murray iced the puck to get reorganized. Face off will be to the right of Peng. Mario Lemieux with his assist in the first period extends his scoring streak to 16 straight. He's got 17 goals and 34 points. In the last 16 games and he's still got 40 minutes more tonight to work on that. Here's the play behind the Hawks. Lemieux tries to center it. Hits the back of the goal. And now Five on the right wing board unable to get it out. Five tries a second time. That one's held in two. Lemieux to the corner against Manson. They battle heavily there and there's going to be a Hawks penalty coming up here. What was the matter with that? And here the Hawks dumping it in. The Penguins are going to have a power play. Here's Callander now. Coffee going after Troy Murray. Or is it, yes it is Coffee and Troy Murray in a wrestling match on the far side. Dave Manson's really going to get bad call there. He was doing great job against Lemieux defensively. He had him covered perfectly. And then he put the arm up saying that he was holding Lemieux. And meanwhile Troy Murray and Coffee are now separated. Well Lemieux and Manson two big guys. Lemieux showing some good strength and then he tried to kick the feet from under Dave Manson. So a host of penalties coming up here. Tell you about them in a second. Early in the second period two nothing Penguins on Sports Vision and BBM. Well exactly what you like. Lemieux and Coffee two stars in this Penguin Club and both of them in the penalty box. Manson and Troy Murray. Black Hawks in the penalty box. Manson got the original penalty for holding on Lemieux. A bad call as Manson did a good job of defending against Lemieux. And then Troy Murray and Coffee got involved inside the Penguin Blue Line. It appeared that maybe Coffee took exception to a slash across the forearm. They got involved in a wrestling match. Meanwhile Coffee went in and so did Troy Murray. But now Lemieux also goes to the penalty box. Chicago penalty number three is Manson two for holding. Number 19 Troy Murray five minutes for fighting. So Murray, Troy Murray and Coffee each get five for fighting. Lemieux and Manson each get minor penalties. So it's all a washout and here's the play in the Hawks zone. On the far side Bob Murray plays the boards to the near side. Picked up by Thomas. He pushed it to center ice. Noonan trying to move in was stopped and it's cleared back into the Hawks zone. Bob Murray bangs one to center ice. Noonan shoots it in from there. Randy Hillier is back. Put it to the near side. Watson held it in. Loney then tied him up. Here the Hawks able to keep it in though. Noonan near board. Shot it around to the far corner. Steve Thomas after it there to the deep slot. Cassidy the long shot is blocked. Trickles to the near side. Now winds up in behind the net. Taken there by Hillier. Randy Hillier able to shoot it down into the Hawks zone. And this will be an icing call against the Penguins. Pressure applied by Noonan. Thomas. Trio having an excellent shift. Bill Watson on the line as well. Thomas got it into. Cassidy after Thomas with a good solid forecheck and body check on Hillier. Keeping the play alive. Forcing Hillier to rush his play. Cassidy got the pass from Thomas after he got a loose puck. This shot was deflected wide by a forward that came out to the point. Face off to the left of Peter Angelo. Here's the draw. Taken by Hunter. Brings it around to the near side. And it's deflected out to center ice. There Graham shooting it back in. There to the far point. Ben Wilson holding it in. Near point to Nyland. Need to flex it to the corner. Taken there by Quinn. And here come the Penguins away. Dan Quinn put it over the Hawk line. A long shot and a save by Pang on Hunter. Now in behind the goal goes Quinn. The centered one it didn't get through. Over to the far side goes Giffin. Lee Giffin tied up by Nyland. Larmer came to take it away. Steve Larmer ahead for Graham. He left it for Savard. Dennis Savard crossing the line. Lost the handle. And that forced the play offside. Rod Busk was able to get the stick on there and force Savard to take an extra move and lose control of the puck. Savard on the pick up from Dirk Graham. Going on the off wing. Tried to fake and go to the middle. Puck poked away on an offside call. The Blackhawks will be back on home ice on Monday night. The Boston Bruins will come into town. Boston is in on Monday and Wednesday night the Norris Division leaders, the Detroit Red Wings, will be in the stadium. Here's from the draw stapled in a shot deflecting in front. Pietrangelo gloved it easily. Now Ciren back of the net. Gave it to Hillier. Kept it along the right wing boards. The calendar. Jock Callender. Lost it as he came to the line but Lemieux carries on. Battles to the boards but was tied up there. Dave Manson after it in the corner. Wired it around to the far side and by. Who deflects it to the center ice area. Now the Hawks carry it in offside. Still early in the second period. It's 2-0 Pittsburgh on sports vision and WBBM. Now from the face off the Blackhawks dump it in. Ciren to the far side. Up the boards for Simmer who shot it to center. Now bouncing around there. And it winds up on the stick of Lemieux crossing the line. Lemieux on the near board. Got around to check. Lemieux cuts for the net. Centered one. Just behind Callender. Ciren held it in. To Lemieux far corner. To the line Ciren a long shot deflecting wide. Comes to the near board. And Thomas whacks it back into the penguin zone. Hillier. Cleared it to Callender at center. Callender for Lemieux over the line. Drop pass for Simmer a drive and he blasted it wide. Now Buskus holding it in. Buskus rolled it back to the net. Lemieux trying to center. Couldn't get it through the traffic. And Noonan came up with it. Ryan Noonan starting the Hawks to center. To Watson over the line. For Noonan in the corner. Centered one Bob Murray. Couldn't get there. Now Watson a long shot. That's blocked up into the air. They scramble and the Penguins clear it back to center ice. Here's Ben Wilson. To Cassidy who sends it in. Peter Angelo to the far side. Hunter. He rolled it to the center ice area. Gary Nyland put it back into the penguin zone. Taken by Bodger. He cleared it to center. Hunter now hits the line. Trying to center one. It deflects to the corner. Hunter is there. His pass deflected though to Nyland. And Gary Nyland feeds Savard at center. Over the line for Graham. Left it for Savard. Far side. Back to Graham. Side of the net. Centered one. Just missing Larmor in front. And the Penguins carry away. Dave Hunter to the line. The long shot deflects to the near side. Taken there by Nyland. He put it on Savard's stick. Savy shooting it in hoping for Graham. Graham able to touch it to save icing. Up clear to the near side. Savard is there. Here's the long shot. Peter Angelo to save through a Graham screen. And it's cleared back to the Hawk line. Now the Penguins Johnson at center. Put it into the Hawk zone. Here's the long shot. And it's saved by Pang on Kachowski's drive. Hawks on the counterattack. Ludzik over the line. Left it for Cochran. A shot. Peter Angelo to save. And he covers it up with Ludzik bearing down on it. Twelve and a half minutes for the second period. Two-nothing Penguins on sports vision in WBBM. The Blackhawks playing this back-to-back game using four lines. Ludzik to Cochran. With the low shot. And Peter Angelo with a good save. He's made saves with high shots. And there a low shot along the ice. A tough save for a goaltender to the stick side. But he was able to get the right pad on it. Face-off to the right of Peter Angelo. Now everybody getting ready. Troy Murray and Dave McElwain will go for the draw. Murray won it. But Cochran's fan. Now Bob Murray along. Tipped and a safe scramble. And the shot. And a save by the defenseman I believe. I don't think Peter Angelo got it. Here's Cassidy a long shot. He scores. And the Blackhawks after keeping the heat on. Able to dent the net finally. And it's a two-to-one Pittsburgh lead. Off the draw. The Hawks get the shot on goal. Cochran on the backhand didn't get on it. Turned. Let the shot go. It trickled into the crease. The defenseman got on top of it. Looked like he might get a penalty shot out of it. The Blackhawks. You see McElwain in behind. Peter Angelo. Penguin player sits on it. Troy Murray continues to poke away. Pries it loose. Gets it back to the point. Cassidy. Cassidy had moved in to the top of the circle. The shot right in front. It might have deflected off the stick of Rick Vibe. Up over Peter Angelo. But a big goal for the Blackhawks on a great second effort by Troy Murray. Looked as if the Hawks for a second there might miss yet another glorious chance. Rob Brown actually saved the goal on the initial scramble. After it was shot past Peter Angelo. But then it wound up on Cassidy's stick end. He let the shot rip. It eventually wound up in the net. We'll wait for the official call. But the Hawks have cut the Penguin lead in half. Now here's Hunter turning in his own end. Dave Hunter cleared it to center. Larmer broke up the play there. And then Quinn got it back. He feeds Coffey. All Coffey to Hunter. Hunter crossing the line. Shoots one. Blocked in front. Now quick shot. Nice save by Pang. As the trailer Quinn had a lightning quick change. Hawks able to clear to center. Taken there by Hunter. Now Coffey to the near side of Giffen. Lee Giffen shooting it in. Ben Wilson back. Wilson got it to Graham at center. He put it into the Penguin zone as the Hawks had for a change. Al Hillier got it to center ice. Charlie Simmer shoots it in. Goes to the far corner. Simmer and Bergevin come together there. Buck jumped loose back of that Lemieux trying to stuff it in. His shot was blocked. And Cochran able to clear it to center and five. Five dumping it in hoping for Cochran. But Peter Angelo came to knock it away. Cochran in the near corner. Centered one. That's deflected in behind the net. Callender has it there. He got it to Hillier. The far side Simmer put it into the Chicago zone. And Manson with Lemieux right on his tail getting back for him. Dave Manson bounce one to center ice. Now the Hawks flip it in deep. Taken by Hillier. Randy Hillier cleared it to center. Jim Johnson a long shot. Pang squeezing the pads together to stop that. Now Manson got into the Penguin zone. Bounce right to the slot. But Buskus got there to move the Penguins back. Here's Buskus over the Hawk line. Left it for Lemieux. He centered one. Pang swats it behind the net. But Lemieux is there. Walks in front. Shooting and a save by Pang. It dribbled just past the near post. The scramble there. Hawks trying to freeze it. Pang finally does. And Lemieux bidding for his 49th didn't miss by much. It's 2-1 Pittsburgh on sports vision at WBBM. Troy Murray gets credit for the goal on deflection of a Cassidy shot after he passed it to Cassidy. But at the other end, Murray to Lemieux. The great reach uses his body beautifully to keep the puck between his body and the defender swept around and let the backhand shot go. The save was made and the puck trickled to the near side. Here's Buskus a long shot and a save by Pang. Rebound Graham. He shot it into the Pittsburgh zone. Buskus tied up behind the net by Savard. Now they battle to the far corner. And here the Hawks taking it out. Larmor the long shot up off the glass. Came to the near side. And winds up back at center ice. At hog goal Troy Murray from Cassidy and Cochran at 734. Murray's 15th of the year. Cochran every time he's been on the ice tonight has had a goal scoring opportunity. Here's Steve Larmor tied up as he came to the line. Watson waits for him to clear and shoots it in. Bodger to the far side. Hunter. Dave Hunter gave it to Buskus. His long shot up high off the glass. Came to the near corner. Troy Loney tied up by Noonan nicely. Cleared to the far side. And Bill Watson feeds. Thomas busting up the middle. Thomas hits the line but is forced off the play. Here's Watson to the corner. Tries to center. Couldn't do it. Thomas back of the net. He threw it in front. And that deflects to the near board. Cassidy shoots Peter Angelo to save. Rebound to the Penguin. Here's Kachowski flipping it into the Chicago zone. Loney in behind the net. Lost the handle to Noonan. Brian Noonan shot it to the far corner. Got us held it in there. Put it back to the near side. Taken by Kachowski to the line. Kachowski walks in. A wide open net for Kachowski. What a feed by Kachowski. It's 3-1 Pittsburgh. A long shift for Brian Noonan and his line. And they're unable to get into position. Noonan had fallen down in behind the net. Tried to sweep it out front. Kachowski got the pass across. I don't think he intended it to go to Kachowski. He tried to go to the slot. It came to Kachowski. Everyone thought Kachowski was going to let it go. He split it back against the float of Kachowski. And Kachowski had an empty net opportunity. Great play from Coffey. Kachowski from Coffey at 12-0-4. And the Penguins regain their two-goal lead. So it's 3-1 and here's Nyland shooting it in. Kim Johnson back on feed to Quinn at center. Dan Quinn crossing the line. Centered one. Deflects to the goal mouth where Peng leaves it for Troy Murray. Now Ben Wilson sends it into the Pittsburgh zone. But a hand pass made here for a whistle. Mario Lemieux who is, this is the 50th game that Lemieux has played this year. He's got 48 goals. So he needs two to nine of these to reach that magic 50-in-50 plateau. Not too many guys have achieved that. I think Bossy, Gretzky, Morris the Rock and Richard did a 50 when they had a 50-game schedule. And I think that's the end of the story. I think you got them all. Maybe Phil Esposito, did he get 50-in-50? He scored 76 when he scored the 76. That's a good question. I'm not sure whether he did reach 50-in-50. Meanwhile, here come the Penguins, but a pass picked off by Savard. Dennis Savard to center. Got it to the line, but had it knocked away there. Back from the Penguins. Here's Lemieux over the line. He's enough shooting. Fired it wide, trying for the long side. Here's another long shot. That missed the net. And the Hawks now take over. Larmer gets to center, shoots it in as the Hawks head for a change. Now Hillier cleared it to the neutral area. Hunter got it to Lemieux, turning. Lemieux hits the line, stick, handles it to the far side. Turns, centers, deflects it right on, rebound. Peng held it off as a Penguin player, Callender went crashing into the net and then the end boards, and I think the net came loose. Six and a half to go in the second. Three to one, Pittsburgh on sports vision and WBBM. Mario Lemieux with a great play. It looked like it was going to go wide, turned back, passed it across. It was deflected on, and Callender crashing through the goal mouth, trying to stuff it in. He was upended by Troy Murray and went crashing into the end board. Face-off to the right of Peng. Now ready, here's the draw. The Badger, a long shot. He whistled it wide, came to the near side. Busk has held it in to the corner. Loney shoots one from a tough angle right through the goal mouth. And now the Hawks able to clear it to the Penguin line. Rod Buskus got it into the Hawks zone. Taken by Goddess, turning on the near board. His pass deflects to the line. Here's a long drive and a save by Peng. As Badger got all of that, now Buskus a long shot. He missed the target, and the Hawks able to move back. Here's over the line comes Watson, moving right in, shooting, and a save by Peter Angelo. Nice play from noon and new. Give Watson a chance, but Peter Angelo was up to it. Now at center, Bob Murray to Watson. Back to Murray over the line. His pass deflects up into the air. Came down on the stick of a Penguin player, and now Simmer shot it into the Hawks zone. Stapleton, deep in his own end, lost the handle, centering pass Quinn. His shot is blocked. The race is on. Santa Pass hustles to center. Over the line again, Serin. Trying to wait for some help. Serin drilled him into the board. Now Stapleton jammed it loose for Ludzik far corner. Ludzik knocked down, Poffey took him to the ice, and the Hawks will get a power play. Five minutes to go in the second. 3-1 Pittsburgh on sports vision at WBBM. Well, action at both ends. Paul Coffey on Ludzik. Ludzik, excellent along the corner. Boards just wrestled to the ice by Coffey. He has the nerve to look back at the official and say, me? The Hawk tied Ludzik. The Blackhawks third power play of the game. 0 for 3. The only power play in the second period by both teams. Face off to the left of Pietrangelo. Here's the draw. Taken by Hunter. He tries to clear and does get it to center ice. Ryan Noonan now hammers it back in. On the near side, Savard trying to set things up. Savard in the near circle to the line and Wilson. Put him across to Noonan. Back to Wilson deep slot. Now his long drive. Pietrangelo the save, and he gave no rebound with Larmor and Graham both right there. Pietrangelo didn't give him a chance. Ben Wilson has a good shot. Looking to pass it to Savard. That alley was shut down, so he elected to shoot. Corralza bouncing puck, got it to Ben Wilson. He took a look, saw that Savard's angle was covered. He let it go with Graham in front. Pietrangelo made the save as Graham and Larmor tried to get at the rebound, but no rebound. Good flexibility shown by Pietrangelo there. After making the save, he reached to his left. Big power play opportunity here for the Hawks to cut it down to 2-3-2 lead for the Penguins. Here's the draw to Hunter. He got it to center where Quinn shoots it the rest of the way. Now Ben Wilson to Noonan at center, dumping it in. Ground to the near side. Larmor took a hit but got help from Savard. To Wilson at the near point. Deep slot to Noonan. Far circle to Larmor. Back to Wilson. Touch pass, missing Savard. Penguins control and clear. Just under a minute for the Hawks power play. Larmor back over the line. Tied up, dropped it for Noonan. Now to Wilson near circle. For Savard, shooting from a tough angle. Finally shot it upstairs into the seat. And Wilson getting it to Savard. Nice soft pass. Savard though, from a sharp angle. I think it got the handle of Pietrangelo's stick and deflected into the crowd. Still 40 seconds to go on the Hawks power play. Face off to the right of Pietrangelo. Toronto has taken a 1-0 lead over Detroit in the first. Here's the draw. Troy Murray to the near side for a five, centering a shot. They score! Not by much, but it did go in. Steve Thomas had a point-blank chance and whiffed, but it dribbled into the net and the score is 3-2. Some beautiful passing by the Blackhawks. Cassidy moving to his right. Reverse to flow back to Troy Murray. Soft pass to Vive. Vive pulled away across the front of the goal mouth to Thomas. Thomas had Pietrangelo down and he fanned on the shot and it still trickled under the outstretched stick of Pietrangelo. Boy, it hasn't been easy for the Hawks offensively tonight. Pietrangelo with all kinds of great saves and some missed opportunities by the Blackhawks. Finally, Thomas paid the price as he was hit from behind as he fanned on the shot but finally got it in. Rick Vive and Troy Murray assisting Steve Thomas on his ninth of the year. Thomas gave him the old Gaylord Perry change-up. Pietrangelo was lunging so the Hawks now down by one. Now a chance for the Penguins. Lamu almost tucked one in off a giveaway. Into the near corner it goes and the Hawks able to clear to center-ice. Now Callender, he shoots it in. Troy Murray around to the near side and Thomas, he deflects it to the neutral zone. Here's Paul Coffee, gave it to Serin. Long feed right on the stick of Simmer and then he's knocked off the play by Manson. But Callender held it in. Back to the net for Lamu. He's tied up there. Everybody battling behind the Hawk goal and Vive came out of there with it. Rick Vive gave it away to Serin, centering Lamu. Oh, he couldn't hold the pass. He was all alone in front but was unable to hold the centering feed. Hawks clear it to the Penguin line. Here's Coffee. Oh, Coffee shoots it in. Manson on the near side, couldn't get it out. Buskus a long shot. Deflects behind the net. Lamu is there, centering. And the puck deflects away to Stapleton. Stapleton shoots it into the Pittsburgh zone. Clear to the far side, Ludzik. Leave Ludzik a long shot. Knocked out in front and then wound up in the glove of Pietrangelo. Dangerous play there for the Penguins. Ludzik just turned and let a wrist shot go towards the front of the net with Stapleton right there and the shot just hit him. Oh, what a chance for Lamu. He mishandled the puck. He was all alone in front. A little over anxious and lost control of it. As Rick Vive failed to clear in his backhand it was kept in by Sirin. At the other end, Ludzik tried to dump it towards the front of the net and it almost went in. Almost surprised Pietrangelo. Power play goal. Making it a 3-2 game. $100 from True Value Hardware stores to WPBM's Wreath of Hope. Face off to the left of Pietrangelo. Two minutes for the second period. There's the draw. Utter back of his own goal. Cleared it to the far side and Bodger. Doug Bodger. Shot it into the hawk end. They battle. Now Quinn dug it out. Moves in, shooting. He shot it up high. Rebound taken by Stapleton who flipped it to the Pittsburgh line. Now Bodger. Back over the hawk line against Nyland. Turned to the far corner. Centered one. A shot shot wide by Hunter. Now Hunter to the near corner. Centered one. That's stolen by Savard. Hawks break quickly. Here's Graham. Around a check. Crossing the line. Graham to the far corner. Finally tied up by Bodger. Buster then took it away. Shot back into the hawk zone. Here's Pang out of the net against Lemieux. Lemieux deflects it to the corner. Pang scurries back in the goal. And finally Larmor came to take it away. Larmor feeding ahead to Graham. For Savard over the line. Ran it between his legs but then Serin managed to tie him up. And here come the Penguins back. Four on two rush. Here's Callender over the line for Coffey to Callender. Cutting in. Never did get off a shot. Bergevin went sliding across to break up the play. Four on two rush and the Penguins didn't get a shot. Back come the hawk. Graham a drive. Peterangelo big save. And the Penguins as they go end to end. Now they try to cross the line but Larmor back to break it up. Here's Lemieux at center. Now Lemieux. Drop it for Simmer over the line. Simmer to the far corner. Now will run out of time. As the second period comes to an end. So a furious finish to the second period tonight. But the Blackhawks are able to cut into the Pittsburgh lead. Troy Murray scored his 15th of the year from Cassidy and Cochran at 734 to make it 2 to 1. The Penguins regained a two goal lead when Mark Kachowski scored on a great feed from Coffey at 1204. When the Hawks cash in on a power play Steve Thomas with his ninth of the year on the change up from five and Troy Murray at 1628 to finish off the scoring. The Penguins had 12 shots in the second period. The Blackhawks also had 12. Two period totals 21 to 20 favoring Pittsburgh. News weather and sports coming up on the radio side. On television we're going to have our end of the month down on the farm report. Featuring a look at the Saginaw Hawks. That's coming up shortly on the television side. At the end of 40 minutes Pittsburgh 3, Chicago 2. Another action of the National Hockey League. Today there were two games played. The Rangers beat the Boston Bruins 4-2 right in Boston and Philadelphia used the home ice advantage to beat Winnipeg by a score of 4 to 3. St. Louis and Quebec just getting underway in St. Louis. Scoreless in the first. Toronto has taken a one nothing lead over Detroit in the second of their home and home series. You may be aware that Eddie Olchek scored with three seconds left last night to give Toronto a tie in Detroit. Montreal has opened up a three nothing lead over the Islanders in the second period. Minnesota in Los Angeles later. Hartford is in Edmonton. The Oilers have taken a one nothing lead in the first. I guess Gretzky is all right. Four assists last night in his first game back. And Calgary on home ice is tied with Vancouver at one in the first period. So that's the other action in the NHL today and tonight. And in a moment you'll be updated on what's been happening down on the farm. All about the Saginaw Hawks in the International League. That will follow this time out. After two periods of play in Pittsburgh it's the Penguins three the Blackhawks two. Now it's time for a monthly feature down on the farm. The Saginaw report. Here's Terry Stanton with the latest on how the Blackhawks farm team is doing. It sounds like a broken record. The Saginaw Hawks are still struggling. Or are they? At first glance the answer appears to be yes. But let's take a closer look. As of January 25th the Hawks remained in the cellar of the IHL's East Division. But if you transplant the Hawks into the West they're fighting for second place. And that's something that just might pay off in the long run. As it stands right now we're in fifth place in our division. That's good for second in the West. That's really strange. Conceivably the last place team in the East could have more points than the first place team in the West. So I guess if you were looking to jockey a bit that wouldn't be a real bad place to finish. We've got 40 games to go. It's a little early to start worrying about that. But if it ended today and we're being fifth in our division that would put us over there. I think that would give us a spark. And last year's spark Jeff Pyle says there's an obvious difference in the play of the East Division as compared to the West. We play a little more physical brand in this division I think. Muskegon's real tight checking. Flint's the same way. Kalamazoo are saws in Fort Wayne. We may be struggling a little bit now but that's going to help us when it comes to playoff time. Because you've got to be really good defensive. The teams in the West are high flying teams. They're not quite as tight checking. And I think that will be a situation like I said where if we do end up in the finals against a team like that I think our odds are better. We should however keep in mind that there are 40 games yet to be played in the regular season and the standings can change in a hurry. In Florida, Fort Wayne and Kalamazoo we're all right in the middle of things. You play one of the teams ahead of you a couple of times and knock them off. Your standings can change so quickly. But in order to move up the standings the Hawks need to bottle something that's been elusive all season. And that's continuity. Case in point. Jeff Pyle began the season in Europe playing Division II hockey in Germany. And although he's played well since returning to the Hawks, he still feels that something's missing. It's really tough for me to adjust since I've come back because the game over there was a lot slower and not as things were. It's been tough to get up for every game and get used to the new players. This is the first time I've played with most of these guys. There's only a few guys from last year's team. So it's been a struggle for me and when the team is going bad it gets a little tough at times. I'm just going to try and pull myself out of it and try and be a little more consistent because I've been a little up and down. And if Jeff can even out his game, he'll be a terrific asset to the team. And when speaking of assets, Rosie reminds us of the play of goaltender Ed Belfort. And I'm just very happy with him. He's a strong kid. He loves the work. But still, even if you say you like the work and you want all the work you can get, there's still time when you need the rest. And I think that's one of our pluses is the way Eddie's been playing for us. And after all is said and done, our question is still the same. What can be done to turn things around? You've got to keep your optimism there that things are going to get better. And they will. I mean, there's no question about it. There's been so many injuries. We just shake our heads this year. But the attitude's good and the talent's good. So just work hard and make sure that we get to the playoffs. And once we get there, I think we'll be in, you know, we've got a good hockey team. I think the team will rise to the top and we'll get there. Reporting for Sports Vision, I'm Terry Stanton in Saginaw. Terry, we'll be back on February 25th when the Hawks take on the New York Islanders. Down on the farm, reports can be seen on the last road game of every month. Meanwhile, let's take a look at the standings in the International Hockey League. In the East, Muskegon on top with 33 wins, only six losses and six overtime losses with 71 points. They're ahead of Fort Wayne. Kalamazoo is third. Flint is in fourth with 49. And Saginaw is with 47. Saginaw, with a win tonight, they're ahead of Peoria 4-1 in the second period. Great tie with Flint for fourth place. In the West, Colorado has slowed up somewhat. They're 24-20-3 with 51 points. Milwaukee, eight games under 500. Tied with Salt Lake for second at 42 points. And Peoria in the cellar with 40 points. They have 17 wins. As we mentioned, in the second period, it's Saginaw 4-Peoria 1. Here in the Civic Arena, after two periods, it's the Penguins 3, the Blackhawks 2. Pat and I will be back with highlights right after these messages. In the second period, the Blackhawks were able to cut into the Pittsburgh lead, but the Penguins still have an edge. It's 3-2 after 40 minutes of play. And the Blackhawks, in that second period, were able to strike first. That cut the Penguin lead in half shortly thereafter. Pittsburgh got up by two again, but then the Hawks answered. Well, it was great perseverance, good effort by Troy Murray, who was having an excellent game. Cassidy got the pass from Troy Murray, let the low shot go. Five, Cochran and Troy Murray, who had made the pass, all went to the front of the net. They give Troy Murray credit for his 15 from Cassidy and Cochran at 734. The first shot was stopped by Peter Angelo. The Hawks just kept hacking away at it. Pucks squirted loose. McElwain came in behind Peter Angelo to give him extra protection. Brown fell on top of the puck in the crease, tried to sit on it, failed to do that. Troy Murray just poked it under him to the side of the net. He just continued to whack at it, pried it loose. Great second effort on his part. Got it back to Cassidy at the point. Cassidy moved in, let the low shot go. Cochran was there, Troy Murray was there, and so was Rick Vibe. It looked like a couple of right-handers might have had a chance to deflect it. They give credit to Troy Murray. Then at 1204, what a beautiful pass from Paul Coffey. Everyone thought he was going to shoot, Pang included. He came out of the net to challenge the shooter. Kaczelski made the pass across. He intended the pass to the centerman. It deflected off the skate and went to Coffey. Coffey made a brilliant play to make it 3-1 at 1204. And then at 1628 on the power play, some nice passing. Troy Murray to Vibe, Vibe back across the front of the goal mouth to Steve Thomas. And Thomas gave all the Blackhawks and the organization fits there as he fanned on it. And it still went in. It looked like he was going to bury it, but he fanned on it, but it had enough steam to go across the line. And so the Hawks really moved the puck beautifully on the power play. So through 40 minutes, it's the Penguins 3 and the Blackhawks 2. We'll come back with third period action right after this timeout. Music With ex-Blackhawk and Penguin, Dale Talon, Pat Foley back in the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, where the Penguins have a 3-2 lead over the Hawks getting ready for the third period. Tomorrow on Sports Vision, it's a college hockey doubleheader at 2. The UIC Flames host the Fighting Falcons of Bowling Green at 6.30. The Michigan Wolverines take on Michigan State live from East Lansing. It's all tomorrow on Sports Vision, Chicago's winners on cable. Bowling Green Falcons have probably got no chance. The alma mater of our fine producer and director, Lisa Seltzer, who's done a fine job on this telecast and last night's telecast as well. Didn't have much control over the one in Detroit though. We did a pretty good job considering we're located in the Windsor Tunnel. All right, Peter Angelo to our right here in the third period and Darren Pang to our left. Here's the draw and Ben Wilson sends it in. Hawks head for a quick change. They didn't like the matchup. Doug Bodger back for the Penguins. Baring to center, Nyland dumps it right back in. And the Hawks are ruled to be offside on the play. The faceoff will be just outside the Pittsburgh line. A sold out civic arena here tonight, 16,168 on hand for the Penguins. It's their 15th sellout of the year. They had sold out nine of their last 11 home games. It's great to see this building filled up once again. It wasn't that long ago we'd come in here and it would be four, five, six thousand people. It would be all that would show up with the arrival of Lemieux and the trade with coffee coming over. The city is excited about their Penguins. Here come the Penguins now from the draw, coffee alone, wrist shot deflecting harmlessly toward the net. Pang handled it easily and now Larmor starts back. Steve Larmor to Graham at center. The return pass got him to the line but it's knocked away to the far corner. Hunter trying to feed Lemieux who's tied up but he got some help from Hunter. Dave Hunter works his way to center. Now lost the handle, locks clear it back into the Penguins zone. Billy Serin got it to coffee at center. All coffee shooting it in. Pang shot it to the far board. Cochran battles calendar there now Simmer dug it out. Simmer to the corner took a hit from Manson trying to feed Lemieux. He was tied up, puck loose to the far side. Now Cochran able to clear it to center and five. Break five to the line. He was knocked off the play by Bodger and controlled by calendar. Now calendar cleared it to the far board. Now Dan Quinn controls. His pass broken up to Wilson. Now back into the Penguins zone. It's taken by Buskus. Proud Buskus. His pass is broken up then came loose to center. Here's a feed. Lee Giffin tied up in traffic unable to advance it. And now the Penguins Kachowski dumps it in. Gary Nyland put it to the near side. Penguins hold it in though. Kachowski in behind the net for Giffin. Lee Giffin turns. Unable to make a play though. And it's cleared to the near side and Watson. Watson shot it to the neutral zone. Penguins move back, back in. Gotta save it. Open net. Kachowski missed it. Kachowski had a chance for his second empty netter of the night and he shot it wide. Came to the near side. Keep it in. Now Wilson fired it around to the far board. Held it by Hillier. Hillier got it to the deep slot. Then a pass hit escape. And the Hawks able to clear it to the neutral zone. Back over the line. Comes Loney. Cuts for the net. Shooting. Pang. A glove save and he holds on to it. Early in the third period. Pittsburgh 3. Chicago 2 on Sports Vision and BBF. Kachowski got us. Makes a great play. Fakes the slap shot. Passes it across. Kachowski is all alone. He's got the empty net. And he shot it wide. Thank you very much. By the way, Steve Gotus was just awarded an assist on the third Pittsburgh goal. They had one. So the goal reads Kachowski from Coffey and Gotus. At 12.04 the second period. And Gotus should have had another assist right there. But Kachowski unable to hit the empty net. Now it's in the Pittsburgh zone. Graham in the near corner. Tied up by Lemieux who stole it. Now Coffey works it to center ice. From behind Samard picked his pocket and then it was knocked off his stick. Coffey gets it back. His feed deflected right back to him. Now he shot it into the Blackhawk zone. Mark Bergevin tied up by Lemieux. Bergevin wants to freeze it but can't. Now Larmer helping out. Steve Larmer got it to Dirk Graham. Graham to center. Dumping it in. Taken by Callender. Now to Coffey. In stride and center. Coffey hits the line. Coffey cuts in behind the net. Trying to wrap around and rolled off the stick. Here's a shot and a save by Pang. And a penalty coming as Coffey was taken down. And the Penguins will head to the power play. Pittsburgh leading 3-2 on sports vision and BBM. Paul Coffey showing a burst of speed on the off wing. Santa Paz takes a whack at him. He cuts in behind the net. Cassidy's got him angled. Grabs a hold of his left arm and pulls Cassidy down. As Cassidy, or I should say Coffey, tried to get it out front. Hunter walked in, cranked it up. Pang with a good save on the delayed penalty call. Cassidy for holding at 3.59. Here's the draw to the Penguins. On the near board, Lemieux put it into the corner. Now Quinn centered it, goes through to the far side. Coffey holds it in there, chopped it back in the net. It bounced loose to the Blackhawks. And here's Stapledon. Mike Stapledon carries it over the Penguin line against Badger. They battled into the far corner. And now the Penguins able to pry it loose. Paul Coffey. On feet, right on the stick of Quinn. Fires, and a save. Rebound, chopped wide. Now in behind the net it goes. Lemieux has it there. Put it to the deep slot, Badger. Far side to Quinn, shooting. He fired it wide. Coffey into the near corner. Back to the goal, Lemieux centered it. Dan Quinn off a great feed from Lemieux. And the Penguins lead it 4-2. Well, Lemieux is just a real treat. What a play on his part. He set up Quinn earlier from behind the net. This time he was to the left of Pang. A soft little backhand pass right onto Quinn, who had broken through the middle. What a pass from Lemieux right onto the stick of Quinn. His 19th goal of the year. Second goal on the power play. Lemieux and Coffey assisting Quinn. His second power play goal of the game at 4-51. And now the Hawks down by a 4-2 count. Here's the draw. Cassidy feeds up a long one. Pietrangelo gloves it and holds it. Well, the Hawks box there breaking down. Three Hawk players across in a straight line in front of the net. Lemieux with the soft touch, a great hand. Made a beautiful backhand pass onto the stick of Quinn. Lemieux with both assists on the Quinn power play goals. Big goal for the Penguins as they pull ahead 4-2 with 15 minutes to go in the third period. By the way, there's been a change in a Hawk goal and an assist. The first Hawk goal scored by Troy Murray. Cassidy assisting. They take the second assist away from Cochran and give it to Vi. At 7-34 the second. Face off to the left of Pietrangelo. Here's the draw. The near corner, Noonan tied up there. Now Thomas pries it loose, but his pass hit a skate. Thomas along the near board. Now Goddess came to take it away. Brings it around the boards. It deflects right back into the Hawks zone. The race is on and this will be icing as Bob Murray gets there to touch it first. That's a bad break for Glenn Cochran. I thought he had a sixth assist that would have pulled him ahead of Darren Peng. Another ongoing battle. Cochran's had three or four shifts and every time he's been out there he's had a goal-scoring opportunity. He promised me he would score a goal last night in New Jersey being his birthday, I think his 30th birthday. He's had the better chances tonight. A few shifts that he's played. Dan Quinn, so far the man of the hour for the Penguins with two power play goals. Quinn, the former Calgary Flame, traded for longtime Penguins sniper Mike Bullard. And as he did in Chicago Stadium, Quinn has been faced with a task of looking after Dennis Savard, and the task that he has performed as well as anybody can. Savy's been held off the score sheet through five periods. Here's Nyland, a long shot. Pietrangelo the save, rebound and a goal, Malfin. Frank Pietrangelo covers it there. Right off the draw, Nyland moved into the top of the circle. Let one rep, but Pietrangelo has been cool, made the pad save, kicked it away. Larmor attempted to get to the rebound, he had a stick tied up. Just got a little bit of it and advanced it to the goal crease and Pietrangelo froze it. Nyland has had a strong game, lets it rip. On the first shift of the game he let one rip, just went wide. The puck came off the end boards to Dirk Graham. He missed the empty net on the first shift of the game. Boy, it could have been a different story altogether. The Hawks had three great chances in their first three shifts, didn't score on any of them. That one there, especially by Graham, might have made a big difference in the style of the game. That's for sure, I was thinking actually at the time, Dale. The Hawks may look at the first five minutes of this game and I was hoping then it wouldn't come back to haunt them. But it just might do that because Hawks could have had two or three goals early. But Ron able to convert and the Penguins now have a 4-2 lead. Dan Quinn trying to clear it, bounced away to Fodger. He got it to center before he was stopped and the Hawks dump it back in. To the near side, Hunter chopped it to center, Wilson has it there to Graham. Dirk Graham to Larmor over the line for Savard, far circle, spinning to the corner with Buskus all over him there. Hawks have all three players in the corner now and finally the puck is held there in the whistle sound. Good job by Buskus on Savard, tying them up, not letting them escape. He tried a 360 in the corner. Buskus tied them up beautifully, pinned them against the corner boards and got a face off with 13.51 to go. 4-2 Penguin lead. Quinn has two, Coffey has one. I should say Coffey has a goal and an assist. Kachowski scored on a great Coffey feed. Face off to the right of Pietrangelo, here's the draw to the far corner. Searon unable to clear it, Troy Murray barrels to the side of the net, tried to stuff it in. But Pietrangelo wouldn't leave the post and he holds on to it. Troy Murray's had a fine game, he's got a goal and an assist, he's been working extremely hard. Fell down, got up, tried to stuff it. Pietrangelo is well positioned up against the far post. Face off to the right of the Penguin goal. Here's the draw right to Cochran, but his shot is blocked. And out come the Penguins, here's Lemieux. Over the line for a similar shot, he's shot it wide. Cochran moves the other way. Long feed behind Vibe who captures it. Now got it to Troy Murray. And then his pass picked off by Lemieux. And Paul Coffey may be shaken up. He had hit the deck and was slow to get up, but now has the puck. Coffey gave it to Searon. Searon cleared it over the Hawk line. Callender trying to walk in as the defense backed right in, but finally Callender lost the handle. Now Peng put it to the near side, taken by Simmer. Simmer centers, Lemieux shoots, Peng got a piece of that with the left hand. And Cochran able to clear it to the Pittsburgh line. Paul Coffey cleared it to the far side. Now back into the Penguin zone, it's taken by Searon. Searon gave it to Kachowski. He's tied up, Hawks try to dig it loose, but Coffey steals. And Paul Coffey bangs one out to center right. Santa Paz trying to move back in, Coffey steals to Lemieux. And now a penalty is coming up off the play. And we'll fill you in momentarily. It's Pittsburgh 4, Chicago 2 on Sports Vision and WBBM. Darren Peng comes up with a big save on the screen shot from Mario Lemieux. Lemieux bidding to score his 49th and 50th goals in 50 games. He has 48 goals in 49 games coming into this contest. But he's been held off as far as goals are concerned. He's made two beautiful passes to set up goals on the power play. Meanwhile, Coffey off the play, got a slashing penalty, and the Hawks have a chance on the power play. They're fourth. Now the Hawk in the neutral zone cleared back into the Hawk end. Bouncing around finally Corral by Noonan. Ryan Noonan to Ben Wilson who shoots it in. Comes to the near side. Graham battles the boards, digs it out for Noonan. Noonan near point. Moved it across to Ben Wilson. Far side to Savart. Side of the net to Graham. Looks for a play. Feeds Noonan. Here's the drive. Pietrangelo the save and he hangs on. That shot almost squirted through Pietrangelo's legs. He goes in that butterfly style with his pads as he was going down and almost snuck through. Noonan. Graham wanted to feed it across the goal mouth. Bodger slid in front of it so he had to pass it to the open point. And that almost went through Pietrangelo's legs. Just over a minute remaining on the Hawk power play. Eleven and a half for the third period, four to two in favor of the Penguins. Now Troy Murray and Lemieux. Murray winning the draw to Bob Murray. His long shot deflects into the seats. The long reach of Mario Lemieux. Able to get the stick on it. Face off will originate about six feet inside the Penguin line. The shot was tipped. Box of one power play goal. Thomas scored his ninth goal of the year to make it 3-2 at 16-28 of the second period. And they need to capitalize on this one. Trailing by two with eleven and a half minutes to go. Toronto has taken a three to one lead over Detroit in the second period. And Quebec is tied with St. Louis 1-1 in the second. Here's Bob Murray back of his own net. Penguins pulling back to center. Allowing Murray to shoot it in. Over to the far side it goes. Held in by Cassidy. Near point to Bob Murray. His long shot. Pietrangelo the save. Rebound to the far corner. Dug out of there by Lemieux. Mario Lemieux. Beating for Troy Loney. He chopped it to the side of the hawk net. And Troy Murray has it there with half a minute for the hawk power play. Now a pass up over the stick of Bob Murray. He has to regroup. Then gave it right to Hunter. Dave Hunter wasting time and clears it into the Chicago zone. Goddess hustles into the corner. Knocked down there by Cassidy. He wants to freeze it and he does. Good penalty killing by the Penguins. They're aggressive forechecking. Hawks having difficulty getting on track into their own zone. Only ten seconds remaining on coffee slashing penalty. Dave Goddess going off in a player change. Getting a lot of ice time in this game. Goddess played junior hockey with Dave Manson and Prince Albert Saskatchewan. Let's see who won the Memorial Cup. Now the draw to Savard at center. Here's Savard wheeling over the line. Put it to Graham near side. Centered one to flex in front of the Penguins' Hunter. And just out of the box comes Coffee. Coffee over the line, far side. Ben Wilson able to sprawl to knock it away. Both teams are now back at full strength. Island chipped it to the near side. Bodger trying to hold it in but didn't quite do it. Offside is called. We're halfway through the third. Four to two pit on sports vision at WBBM. At Foley back in Pittsburgh along with the man who ranks 87th on the all-time Pittsburgh scoring list. Drop seven spots in a week I think. Here's Stapleton over the line shooting and a save by Pietrangelo and he holds it. Pietrangelo has made every save in that area in the waist-high shot. Ox has got to find a different location to beat him. He's been sharp with all those shots. Good hustle, good effort by Stapleton. Catches up with the puck on the off-wing. Let's it go and Pietrangelo out of the net has the angle and makes the save right in the breadbasket. Looks like it winded him a bit. I think it's a wonderful accomplishment that you rank 87th on the Pittsburgh scoring list. Until I look higher and I see luminaries such as Gary Rissling. Yeah, but he was here for 12 years. Eddie Shaq outscored you when he was here. He played about 22 games in this town. Who is Dunk McCallum? He outscored you when he was here. My percentage, my scoring percentage is higher than all those guys. I've played very few games here. Face-off to the right of Pietrangelo. Here's the draw to Coffey. Coffey up the middle for Lemieux. He chipped it ahead, picked off by five. Who cleared it back into the Penguin zone? Coffey stands back of the net. Now didn't have a play, just banks one to center ice. And it's taken by Manson back in his own zone. Around the board for Santa Paz. Lost at the calendar. Back of the net, it goes to Simmer. He tries to center that hit escape. And Troy Murray takes over. Murray feeding five on the right-wing board. Tied up by Callender at center, but now the Hawks manage to dump it in. Troy Murray knocked down on the far side. Santa Paz tries to dig it out, but lost the handle. Taken by Callender. Callender feeds Simmer at center. Carly Simmer tied up, but Callender carries on over the line. Cut for the net, forced in behind. He centered it, and it's stolen by Bergevin. Ava To Watson, a lead for Stapleton over the line. Waiting for help. The help is Bob Murray. The shot and a save by Pietrangelo. Rebound in behind the goal. Watson battling there. Now Stapleton after it against Hilliard. They wrestle in the far corner. They both hit the deck and they fell on top of the puck. Just over eight minutes for the third period for two Penguins on SportsVision and WBBM. Our next Bulls game on SportsVision, Monday at 9.30 when the Bulls take on the Sacramento Kings. The Bulls then travel down the coast to take on the Lakers on Tuesday night at 9.30. He was tied up. Quinn jammed it loose to center. Hawks back in offside. Don't forget Monday night the Boston Bruins will be in Chicago Stadium. A rare Monday night game. 7.20 radio only with the pregame. And Wednesday night the Detroit Red Wings will come into town. Now the draw. Shot to the Chicago line taken by Butch Cassidy. Cassidy to center, shooting it in. Taken by Hillier. Randy Hillier tied up in the corner. Got help from Quinn who's shot it by everybody back into the Hog zone. Peng clears it himself to center. Taken there by Graham. Dirk Graham works it over the line. Graham to the near side. Feeding Bob Murray turning in behind the net. Murray tries to center. That hit a skate. And Quinn able to clear to center ice. Here's Hunter putting Quinn over the line. The long shot. And he had it flutter up over top of the net. Out to the line. Buskus, his shot is blocked. Taken by Bob Murray. Now Cassidy. Down to seven minutes remaining and the Hawks trail by a pair. It's cleared to the Pittsburgh zone. Out Buskus going back. Around the boards for Kachowski. He bounced it loose to center. Here's a three on two. Loney over the line for Kachowski shooting. Peng stops it on the short side. Came to the near board. And back come the Blackhawks. Steve Thomas leads the rush. Going over the line and Troy Murray was in ahead of the play. Three on two going against the Blackhawks. Loney to Kachowski. Kachowski who has a goal. Missed an empty net opportunity for second of the game in the early part of the third period. He tried to go to the short side on Peng. Peng made the save. And on the other end a three on two for the Hawks. And the Hawks go outside. Thomas had Troy Murray to his left and Rick Five to his right. Shots on goal. Twenty nine Pittsburgh shots. Twenty seven Blackhawk shots. Here's the draw. Taken by Lemieux. Rolled it to an open wing. Steve Ludzik. Now trying to move back. Lemieux tied him up. Ludzik holding his stick and got away with it. And Stapleton came to take it away. Stapleton to the far side. Nyland works his way to center shooting it in. Comes to the near side. The Penguins clear. The race is on. Here's Lemieux over the line against Nyland. Fires. Tennessee rebound. Callender turns in behind Menend. Never did get off a shot. And then his pass bounced back into the Penguins zone. Here's Coffey wheeling over the Hawk line. Coffey cuts in shooting Peng. Got a piece of that. It may have stung him. Now back of the net it goes. Taken there by Larmer. Steve Larmer bounced one to the near side. Bergevin clearing. Lemieux controls at center. And his pass intercepted but the Hawks move in offside. It's getting to the late part of the game. 4-2 Pittsburgh on Sports Vision and WBBM. From the faceoff, Bob Murray sends it ahead right to the stick of Hillier though who clears the center. And now Cassidy dumps it in. Taken by Hillier. Got it to the near side. Into the corner goes Thomas. He centered it. A shot. Here's Angelo a save. As Santa passed by rather five trying to stuff it in. Here's a two on one. Quinn over the line with Hunter. Quinn moving in, mishandled it. Clark jumped over his stick just as he cut to his forehand. Now five the other way with a long shot. Blocked at the defense. Ham's in front. A shot. And a save by Peter Angelo. Troy Murray a great chance. And the Penguins able to move away. Dave Hunter over the line. Now it came back to Hunter on the near side. Flipped it into the slot. Buskus centered one. Deflects to the line. Got it. He's knocked down before he could shoot. Now it's cleared to center ice. Taken by Graham. Leading Larmer. Forced a turn as Savard was knocked down and would have been offside. And now the Hawks have to dump it in. Came to the near side. Ben Wilson keeping it in. Rolled it to the corner. Goddess and Graham come together there. Now Goddess. Looks like he wants to freeze it if he can. But the Hawks still work him over. And now jamming loose behind the net. Now it's Graham and Hunter battle. Ben Wilson keeping it in. Ben Wilson comes in to kick it loose for Savard. Savard spinning to the far corner. Savard into the far circle. Cuts for the slot. Shooting. And a save. And a penalty is coming up. The Blackhawks with a last gas power play chance here. And they have to cash in on this one. This is their fifth power play. But you've got to give them credit. They just continued to work and forecheck and pry the puck loose as the Penguins tried to freeze it. The Hawks kept the play alive with some good forechecking. Savard eventually got the puck. Cut it on the far side. Cut it on his forehand. And he was held as he let the shot go. The Hawks will get their fifth power play chance. They're one for four. Still plenty of time. 3.39 to go. Hunter, the former Evan and Euler in the penalty box. Final score. Montreal knocked off the Allenders 6-2. Toronto ahead of Detroit 3-2 in the second. Face off here to the right of the Penguin goal. Now the draw to the line. Cassidy near point. Bob Murray a touch pass. Picked off. Cleared just outside the line. Now the Penguins steal. Here's Lemieux over the line. Lemieux near circle shooting. Pang the save. Rebound to the Hawks. And back comes by. Break five over the line. Barrels into the near corner against Coffey. Then he's knocked down. And the Penguins control. Here's Quinn putting Lemieux over the line. Lemieux trying to center one. Right through the goal mouth. Now Coffey for Lemieux walking in front. The long reach. He shoots. Pang the save. Rebound to the line. And now the Penguins away some time. Pittsburgh is shorthanded. But they're putting on a show here. Lemieux in particular. Here's Serin coming into the Hawks zone. He finally lost it to Larmor. And the first minute of the Hawks power play has belonged to Pittsburgh. Now Larmor over the line. Far side. Put it to Savard. Out to the line. Wilson for Noonan at the near point. Now back to Wilson. Wilson to the far side. And Savard to Wilson. Deep slot shooting. Fired it wide. Rebound Noonan. His blast. Up high. Over the glass. Into the crowd. Well the first minute you said it. The Penguins. Mary Lemieux with a great pass across the goal mouth. Peng made a terrific save on Quinn. And then Lemieux as he was tied up in front. Went to his backhand. And somehow Peng was able to make the save. Perfect pass across the goal mouth. Peng sliding in front as Quinn had a step on. Quinn and then. Lemieux with a great move to turn. Fake come to his backhand. And the shot was deflected wide. Half a minute for the Hawk power play. Just over two minutes for the third. Four to two in favor of the Penguins. Pittsburgh hasn't won a home game for a month. Losing four and tying three in their last seven starts in this building. But they opened up a two nothing lead in the first. And have carried on to a four two lead here late in the game. Face off will be to the left of Peter Angelo. Pittsburgh all year here at home has not been that great at all. Eleven wins nine losses and six ties. Here's the draw taken by Buskus turning back of the net. Clearing. Ryan Noonan to Wilson. Over the line for Savard. Savard into the far corner. Rings it around the boards to the near side. The Penguins able to clear it down all the way. Noonan back to center. Noonan gains the line and plays the board back of the net. Peter Angelo leaves it for Coffey. He gave it right to Noonan but it bounced away to center ice. And the Pittsburgh penalty is over. Both teams back at full strength. Lemieux steals from Wilson and Ben Wilson got it back at the last second. Wilson flipped it over the line. Graham far side. His pass broken up. And here's Lemieux with under a minute and a half to go. The Hawks have that last power play chance and virtually had to capitalize on it. But were unable to generate even one good scoring chance. Here's a steal by Coffey in his own end. There's it to the far side. A battle at center ice. We're into the final minute. And Coffey giving some ground to his own end. Bounce one to center. Now corralled by Serin in his own end to Coffey. Penguins just trying to play keep away here. Now Hunter turns at center and the Hawks have been unable to touch the puck in the final minute. Now here's Cassidy crossing the line and Chicago offside on the play. The Penguins have done a good job in this third period. Shut the Hawks down and when the Hawks did get a chance Peter Angelo would come up with a big save. He's had a wonderful night for the Penguins right off the first shift. He's made great save after great save. Good effort by the Hawks in this game. They should certainly deserve the better fate in this game. Twenty-three seconds to go in the game and it gives us an opportunity to tell you about tonight's Anheuser-Busch player of the game. Troy Murray gets the nod tonight. He had a goal and an assist and was solid throughout the game with some good forechecking and good defensive work as well. Tonight's Anheuser-Busch player of the game Troy Murray. Twenty seconds to go as the Hawks dump it in. Taken by Johnson. Paired it to the far side. Big scramble along the boards and the whistle sounds. Eight seconds left. Now a little pushing and shoving over there. Hillier and Manson giving one another the hairy eyeball. I think we're going to have some penalties here. And they're both going to be set on. The Lionsman do a good job of breaking things up. They send Hillier to the Pittsburgh locker room. Manson goes to the Blackhawk locker room. This coming with only eight seconds to go in the game. And a road trip that started out in such promising style with a victory over the Norris division leaders in Detroit. Wides up with two disheartening defeats. The last second loss last night to the Devils. The Blackhawks had a terrific start in this game and really should have led two to nothing early but failed to capitalize on their chances. And it could be said that the first couple of shifts of this game might be the ones that come back to haunt the Blackhawks when it's all said and done. Hillier and Manson each get roughing penalties here with eight seconds left. And Graham and Giffin also get penalties for roughing. Here's the draw. The Penguins clear it and this one's all over. The Penguins out to congratulate Frank Pietrangelo Pittsburgh breaking a seven game home ice winless streak with a 4-2 victory here tonight in the third period. The Penguins got the only goal. Dan Quinn on the power play from Lemieux and Coffey at 4-51 to seal the verdict for Pittsburgh. The Penguins had 13 shots in the third. The Hawks had 11. The game totals 34 to 31 favoring the Penguins. The final score, Pittsburgh 4, Chicago 2, and we'll wrap it up in a moment. Well, the Blackhawks had a very promising start to this three game road swing. They beat the Detroit Red Wings in Detroit, but then two disheartening losses last night, a real heartbreaker, and the final seconds of overtime losing to the New Jersey Devils. And tonight, a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Penguins. I really think you look back at the first five minutes of this game and the complete story could have been very different. Well, the Hawks should have had three or four goals in the first five minutes. Great chances they had. Graham right off the get-go had an empty net opportunity shot a wide. Thomas had a good chance. Cochran had a good chance. Ben Wilson had two great chances on the power play. Peter Angelo was very sharp in the first period. And then the explosiveness of Paul Coffey, I think he can really turn a game around. The Hawks were in good shape. They had an excellent first period. They had good pressure, good scoring chances. Shut down Lemieux, shut down the Penguins, and all of a sudden out of nowhere, Coffey just flies through the middle of the ice, lets one go. And instead of it being one or two-nothing Chicago, it was one-nothing Penguins, and they score in a power play. And it had to be disheartening. They were trailing two-nothing after the first period. It was one of their better road periods all season long. And then the goal that killed them was the early power play goal in the third period after they made it three-two at the end of two. It was a good effort on their part. They played solidly, but they just didn't get any breaks offensively. And whenever they got great chances, Peter Angelo came up with some big saves. Goaltending, I think, was the difference as far as the Penguins were concerned. Peter Angelo made tremendous saves. Blackhawks had been inching close to the 500 mark, but they are now back to five games below the break-even point 22, 27, and 3. Hawks will remain at 47 points and in third place in the Norris Division. By the way, Detroit has come back to tie Toronto at last report 3-3 in their game. So the Blackhawks will get back to home ice on Monday night. After Super Sunday tomorrow, the Boston Bruins come into town. And if this road trip was a tough one to swallow, there won't be any room to breathe on Monday night. Well, that's for sure. The Boston Bruins, last time they were at the stadium, really forechecked well. They're aggressive, and the Bruins are coming off a tough loss against the Rangers on home ice, so they'll be ready to play. They've got some speedy forwards that are aggressive and like to play it in the offensive zone. And you also have Ray Bork, who had the dimension coming late. So it'll be a tough game for the Blackhawks. But they've played well this road trip, and they should have had a few more points out of it. 720, the radio pregame on Monday night when the Boston Bruins come in.
