This is just a terrific catch. Monk is in motion. Watch him coming underneath. He's almost held there by Dishman. He reaches out and grabs him, but Monk just makes a splendid catch. Eleven yards on the play. His seventh catch of the day. Future Hall of Famer, Art Monk. That's a thirty-four. Knocked out of bounds by the free-safety bolt, Orlando. A twenty-two-yard pickup. Yeah, but it's after the catch. Watch what he does here. There's Johnson out there. Watch this catch. Bing inside, right back outside. And just gets right by Richard Johnson. And a wonderful Orlando. He's been gone. One-time Pro Bowl player. Seventh season out of James Madison. Last year left the Redskins with seventy-five receptions. It is a first down for Houston, forty-three. Inside handoff. And a wide binder. Reaching to the forty-one-yard line. That's Smith, the middle linebacker off the stop. Well, Vice President Dan Quayle on hand. A guest of Jack Kent Cooke, chairman of the board of the Washington Redskins. Vice President's hometown team, the Indianapolis Colts, having a rugged time this season. Having a slow start. President Bush creating a score here. Makes a pop just shy of the first down marker. Hit by Richard Johnson. President Bush came out and said that he wants the Oilers to beat the Washington Redskins. That's a hit. Now when you get popping like that, the only problem with that play is for Richard Johnson is this. When you make that commitment to come up, you better make sure the ball is thrown, because all of a sudden he's going to just hit, turn around and go, and you're going to be standing there. It is a third and less than a yard with six minutes to go. And the third. And the first down is picked up by Gerald Wiggs, who just checked in. His first carry of the day. That's Smith. Made the stop. But the other day, President George Bush came out and said, no question, he wants the Oilers to beat the Washington Redskins. President calls Houston home, and he called Oilers head coach Jack Pardee to wish the team well in their game with the Redskins. Pardee said that the president said he thought a lot of coach gifts, but he has to go for his hometown covering all possible bases. And there's a first down. The Oilers and Redskins, it should be pointed out, have not played each other during Bush's term in office. That's your fact of the day. I'm really impressed about it. That's not one of the sportsmen. First down of the 33. There it is. All right, Gary Clark is going to go down, hook up and then go. Well, he did. He went down and he hooked up and started to go. Richard Johnson played it very well. But Gary Clark stops. Watch it. Here he comes. We just talked about a moment of the stops. He goes by. Johnson is there. And look at this. He stops for some reason. Didn't finish it. Mark Rippert has been hitting the deep passes this year, something he has not accomplished in the past. The Redskins were not looking to go deep. High play of the drive. Second down and ten. Rippert's in the last slot. And Kaness with the floater with Clark. Richard Johnson on the cover. That'll be just short of the first down. I think Muck wanted Rippert to throw him the ball. He was standing out in the slot uncovered. There wasn't a defensive man on Art Muck. Here's Art Muck sitting out on the outside. Take a look right here. Look, there's nobody here. There's a linebacker way to the inside and a safety back here. So there's actually nobody there. Here comes Muck. Look at him. All he has to do is just stand up and pop him with the ball. And now Biner and Riggs in the backfield. Gerald Riggs stopped by Johnson and Smith, and Riggs has a first down. There's Jim Eddy saying, wait a minute. Now, they've run that play twice now. They line up with Biner, Riggs behind him. We know they're going to hand the ball to Riggs. They should at least hold him for no game. And once again, Doug Smith is shaken up. Timeout has been called. We'll be right back. There are some in Houston and Washington who have referred to this game as Super Bowl 25 and a half. It has been a very hard-fought, tough ballgame. Six to three to score. Another long drive underway. The Houston Oilers with the lead on the two-field game by Housfield from 24 yards out. Rowe Miller hits from 21. It's a first down to 22. Penalty markers are down. Irvin's got the call, stopped by Smith. Very few penalties have been called today. Yeah, it really is. It's just been a great defensive football game. Number 85, false start, five yards. It's still first down. John Warren, the tight end, called out the penalty. He moved and William Fuller came across the line of scrimmage. You know, we were talking about this in the break about what a great defensive football game this is. You're looking at the teams taking our fourth long drive, basically, it may end up in another field goal. You're looking at overtime. I'm not. You are. You have this all wrapped up, an entire script. Yeah. I get it ready. That was one of the fourth penalties of the day. One against Houston, three called on Washington. First and 15. Boy, don't you love to just see hitting like this when they both get up. Gary Clark and Bubba McDowell, number 25, watch this collision. Here comes Clark across, here comes Bubba McDowell, bam. Clark went about three yards the other way. What a great hit. Bubba McDowell at 6'1", about 195 plays much bigger than his size. He is said to be a linebacker in a safety body. You play much bigger when you're going about 100 miles an hour. We've got second down seven from the 19. However, a flag is down. They agree with their hands for the play frats, number 69, 10 yards, 10 seconds down. Ricky Irvins with the head down had a walk back the other way as he lost the touchdown. Well, you're looking at, first of all, Irvins going downfield and Ricky was being, Lamar Latham was covering him. But you're going to see some holding about right there. That is Mark Floreth, the right guard in his third season out of Idaho. And they did call holding, they called hands to the face. What a tough break. Second and 17, back of the 29. Again, it's Clark. He had to make the adjustment, came back for it. Stopped by Richard Johnson. It's an excellent call because you have second down and about 21 to go. You pick up 10 of it or 11 of it. You've got third down to 10. Get half, not trying to get the other half. It's a lot easier getting 10 than it is 21. And Clark with his fifth catch of the day, all on this long Washington drive. We're down to 220 remaining in the third quarter. You've got two guys that are fighting each other down there. Richard Johnson and Art Monk. And I'm talking about hand-to-hand combat. And Richard Johnson says, wait a minute. This could be up. I mean, it's been tough out there on that island. Here it is. Watch the matchup. Now, there's Johnson. He goes down. Art Monk, he pushes him there, which you can't do. Art Monk's left arm pushes off Johnson. But Johnson's holding on. You can see they got locked up. That is a tough call to make. It sets up a first and goal down at the 6. Ritschgen's trying to quiet the crowd. He is close to the goal line. Al Smith prevented Irvings from going across the goal line. If you don't like this type of football, there's something wrong with you. This is really just hard-nosed offense against hard-nosed defense. And the Ritschgens are not trying to do anything tricky now. They're just trying to line up and go at the use of orders and get themselves a score. Second and goal inside the wall. 14th play of a drive that started on Washington's 16th. Bider and Riggs in the backfield. Darrell Riggs seeing the action here in the third quarter, stopped by the strong safety Bubba McDowell. And also the man who has been off two different times, Doug Smith, is in here again. Look at Bubba McDowell. He hits Dishman number 28. A quarter is in there. And the big guy on the bottom is Smith. It is a third and goal. The ball, however, is back at the four. We're down to 40 seconds remaining in the third. It's Houston 6 and Washington 3. Now, Bider is below deep back. So what do you do here? Field goal or go for the touchdown? We also saw Bubba McDowell coming. And you remember what Bubba did to Gary Clark. He said, I'm going to throw this ball out of bounds. So they're going to go for the tie. Joe Gibbs is a very conservative guy. And he's going to let some other things happen. There's a whole quarter to go yet. There's 23 seconds remaining in this third. But with this, with Lowe Miller kicking the ball, that's almost automatic. Well, he hit earlier from 21 yards away. This is an 18-yard attempt. And he puts it through to tie the game. Twenty seconds remaining in the third quarter here at RFK Stadium. And Washington, as Chip Lowe Miller, who tied the game a moment ago at 6, kicks it off with a combination of Gary Brown and Alan Pinkett. And Pinkett will remain right there. So Houston will start out from its 20 when we return. Check the Herbst 10-minute ticker. Matchup of two 6-2 ball clubs. Detroit and Chicago with Detroit on top. Buffalo 13-3 over New England. San Francisco maintaining the 7-0 lead. Cleveland by 1 over Cincinnati. Green Bay has come from behind. They've tied the Jets. Minnesota moving in front of Tampa Bay. And we've got 15 seconds to go in the third quarter. And Houston first down from its 20-yard line. Houston and Washington even at 6. 81-Gibbons in motion. Moons completes just inside the 30-yard line. Alvoy Mays making the stop on Drew Hill. And time is running down in this third quarter. When we come back, it'll be a second down and one. We'll be back after this from the local station.
