On the other hand, Houston, Ernest Gibbons goes back because he's one of the few guys who can catch a punt. Then you look at Ian Howfield, a kicker. Shaky at best. Chip Lowmiller, one of the best in the league. And the kickoff by Lowmiller. Jay Brown, the rookie from Penn State, handles very effectively on the return. And a look at that Houston offensive line, and they have played well. Mads Muckchak, Matthews Flannery, and Williams. Lauren Moon running the run-and-shoot. Alan Pinkett, who comes off a strong game last week in the walloping of Cincinnati. And the Fab Four. Jefferies Hill, Gibbons, and Duncan. Duncan, last week against the Bengals. Nine catches, and did it for the most part with sideline patterns. It's the first down from the 16. It's the running back Pinkett across the 25-yard line. The Redskins came out in a 4-3 against the run-and-shoot. Matt Williams, Johnson, Stokes up front. Charles Mann, eight sacks tied for second in that department. And the NFL is the base defense of the Redskins. And you'll note Kurt Gavea starting that middle linebacker. When they go to the dime, that's the shuffling that takes place. Coleman and Johnson come on with Mays. Oilers first down at the 27-yard line. Those are the audible teams passed down by Ernest Gibbons. And Jefferies with the sideline catch. Darryl Green up from left corner to make the stop. While we're talking about starting out with a 4-3, take a look at it. Here is the defensive line across here. The three linebackers remain in the middle. And Green on the outside is going to be one-on-one all afternoon on Jefferies as long as he stays on that side of the field. Now take a look at it. When they come out, Darryl Green will be covering Jefferies all by himself. A little help from his side of the linebacker, but that won't matter. Darryl Green at five-foot-eight giving away about seven inches on Haywood Jefferies, a second down and four. That picket is wrapped up. Charles Mann, number 71, in his ninth season out of Nevada Reno, making the stop. We were talking to Charles yesterday about the knee problems of a year ago. He played on one leg last season, and he said the coaches don't like to hear it, although he's feeling better this season. But he said he kind of paces himself during the game. I like the fact that when Charles was talking to us, he said, when I come out there, and if you guys are looking at me, I'll be lifting. And he said, I hope I can loosen it up into warm-ups, and usually I can. But they can't do anything until the season's over. It's a third down and two. Drew Hill in motion. And the rune pass incomplete. Intended for Curtis Duncan. So the Houston Oilers, who did not punt at all last week against Cincinnati, going to punt formation. And there is the number one punt return man in the NFL, Brian Mitchell, averaging 17 yards plus per return. Greg Montgomery is back at his 21-yard line. Look out. Just didn't get it away, trying to keep it away from Mitchell, preventing the runback. I like the kick because Montgomery, he did exactly what he wanted to do. Didn't shake the ball, even though the ball went out on the right side. You see him getting high fives. He's going to kick the ball in the midfield area away from Mitchell. And it goes as a 45-yard punt. That outstanding Redskins offensive line, Lachey, McKenzie, Bostic, Flereth, and Jacoby. Mark Ribbon having a terrific season. And the quarterback rankings number two behind Steve Young at San Francisco. Later on we'll see Ricky Irvins come on for Ernest Biner. And when they go to the three-tight end alignment, Warren and Orr join Middleton. From the 21-yard line, the Redskins to the offense. Off the draw, it's Biner. It'll be a second out at six. Houston number one defensively in the AFC Fuller, Childress, Smith, and Jones up front. The linebackers have played well. Keyed by Al Smith, who could be headed to his first Pro Bowl in particular with Miami's John Offerdahl. Injured, Dishman and McDowell having Pro Bowl-type season. When they go to the nickel, the rookies, Robertson and Gunas come on. From the 25, a second out and six. And Rippon to the sideline, but Monk could not hang on. They looked on the outside, Rippon that time. And there's Jim Eddy, the defensive coordinator of Houston, said one thing about this team. They have not been tested really inside with the running game they expected with Washington today. But when Rippon looked on the outside, he saw Dishman one-on-one on Art Monk, decided to go out there. Monk just didn't catch the ball. Up forward and six. Now Monk splits to the right side. 83, Sanders in motion. Through the hands of Wookiee Sanders, who took a late pump. Marcus Robertson with the hit. I would say that Wookiee Sanders knows now that there's someone in the middle. Watch Marcus Robertson, number 31, as Wookiee Sanders comes across. Ball down, bang, Sanders down. Hello. And Kelly Goodburn is back to park from his 10. As Paul mentioned right at the start, the Oilers have had all kinds of difficulties on the park return. Ernest Givens is now back returning punts. Nice spin move by Givens. Stopped at the 48, 36-yard punt and a 10-yard return. We'll be back in a moment. Much playing time for Ernest Givens, not only at his usual wide receiving position, but also returning punts. He said the other day that returning punts and playing his position kind of takes a lot out of him. Two-wits against Miami in the closing seconds of the game. He was carried off the field because of lead crafts. Had to receive fluids intravenously to rebuild his strength. First down at the 49-yard line. A diving attempt made by Hill. And it is ruled incomplete. One of the other things we were talking to Warren Moon about the fact that Ernest Givens, number 81, the Oilers returns punts. He said the next play or two, well, he had a timeout in there that gave Givens a chance to recuperate a little bit. But he said normally if they go right to the next player or two, he doesn't throw the ball at him because he's kind of tired and he doesn't want to risk anything. Givens is the kind of guy that will not fair catch a punt. He wants to run for a touchdown. He says his philosophy is to score every time he handles the ball. Second and ten at midfield. Moon going the middle and is able to complete A.J. Johnson with the stop as Ernest Givens comes up with his first catch of the afternoon. At that time, Warren Moon did throw in the double cover. You see, Givens ends up in the slot. Now, he just drifts downfield about seven or eight yards. And when he does that, he is in a position to catch the ball. Johnson, 47, is there. But there's also a linebacker with him. If he would look back to the other side, he had Tony Jones, number 82, one on one on Martin Mayhew. It's a third and two. The Redskins, 43. Four minutes gone by. No score. Look at Moon able to set the world and completes for the first down to Hill. Collins was right in Moon's face. Warren goes down on, I don't know if he goes down on the knee or not, but watch number 55 come in. Nobody blocks him. The left guard did not do anything. Moon just dips down, comes back up, and throws as he's coming back up. Gets the first down. That's great athletic ability. Look at this. Here comes Moon. Underneath, back up. Now, the question is, if his knee is down, when he dips, he's there. They let him go through with it because his knee never hit. Thirteen yard pick up, first down, after 30. And apparently they will, let's see, an official timeout has been called. The Redskins took a timeout. I don't know whether they want to look at it or not or they have somebody injured. But when Collins came in, if Moon goes down to a knee and Collins hits him, he's down. I'm not talking about college football. I mean, he would be down. But look at Moon. This is a question, are they going to call out a tackle or not? He did hit. On a closer look, it appeared that right knee went down. Down by contact. They've called Stranger Things. Here's Moody. You can see definitely the knee is down. He is back up again. Gets the play off. And I believe the Redskins are saying he was tackled. He was down. Referee is Jerry Austin. Five minutes have gone by in this first quarter. The Redskins have been so dominant here under Joe Gibbs. Last year they won seven out of eight at RFK. On the way to a mark of 10 up and six down. The only loss at the hands of the Giants. The Redskins have won the last nine here at home. Let's take a look at the Budweiser ten minute ticker. Chicago and Buffalo getting off to the three nothing lead. And nothing else to report on. We were talking last night at practice with Joe Gibbs. And incidentally that ended at 730 in the evening. And apparently they are after checking out the review. At least according to the Redskins moving it back. Well you know Moody, I know my colleagues, they say in the grasp. Now he actually goes down to a knee. And we're still waiting for a result. The Redskins were clapping like they won the battle. And they took a timeout to just have him review it. Which is heads up called by Gibbs. To call the timeout, call the officials to the side. Say hey wait a minute. Here we go. A review of instant replay, replay rules that the quarterback's knee was on the ground when he was contact. Now they're going to have to punt the ball because that becomes fourth down. What a heads up call by the Redskins to call the timeout and actually give one away. In this case really not giving it away because it worked out for him. It would have been first down but about the 30 yard line it is now fourth down. And the audience are going to have to punt. Jack Pardee might be upset about this particular play. But when he looks at the replay after the game he begrudgingly will agree with the call. If you want to know what they're doing now they're trying to find out where to put the ball. Remember the Monday night game against Kansas City in the Bills where they lost five yards. Yeah well they lost five in it. You wonder it feels only a hundred yards long how can you lose five yards in there. Well Greg Montgomery getting set to punt. Once again his second within the first five minutes after not putting it all a week ago. Here's a look where the ball should be spotted at the 43 yard line. Well if it's where he's down now it becomes where he was down which will actually be between the 48 and 49 yard line of Houston. And that's what they're looking at. The ball was on the 43 and they have it in the right spot. Give or take it and she's going to punt anyway. And he's also going to kick. Montgomery is going to kick the ball out of bounds. They sure wouldn't kick the ball to the leading punt returner after eight weeks in the national football. Fourth down on the 49 yard line. Yes Montgomery kept it away on that first punt. And Mitchell in his second year at Southwest Louisiana. Back on the Redskins with true breakaway speed. Montgomery is back at his 35. Tried to angle it but did not. Here's Mitchell. Submarine across the 15 yard line by Eugene Seale. 45 yard punt and the extraordinary 8 yard.
