There's magic, music, dancing, comedy, and gaming. On any given evening, there's some form of entertainment for everyone. Las Vegas is the brightest city in the world and features 14 of the world's largest hotels. And it's growing, bringing 30 million tourists annually. It's no wonder Las Vegas is the fastest growing city in America, with 5,000 people moving here every month. In the next minute and 20 seconds, see how many casinos you recognize. The Stratosphere opened April 20, 1996. At the north end of the Las Vegas Strip, the 135-story tower is the tallest building west of the Mississippi and the tallest observation tower in the U.S. The Stratosphere complex offers a large casino and shopping mall, along with one of the best views of Las Vegas. At the top of the tower sits a revolving restaurant, cocktail lounge, and three wedding chalices. Two exciting rides are featured, the high roller roller coaster and the Big Shot. Hundreds of celebrities gathered at New York, New York for the grand opening celebration. The hotel features an art deco themed interior modeled after the New York architecture of the 1920s and 30s. Floors throughout the hotel check-in area have a high polished finish and bellmen wear 1930s style outfits that include pillbox hats. Just when you think you've seen it all, you begin to realize that there's no place quite like Las Vegas. Caesar's Palace is certainly one of Las Vegas' most popular hotels. Caesar's opened in August of 1966 at a cost of $25 million. It started with 680 rooms and a crescent-shaped 14-story tower. Caesar's Palace is famous for its imported cypress trees and shooting water fountains. The Imperial Palace on the Strip has over 200 antique, classic, and special-interest vehicles on display in a plush gallery-like setting. Among them are President Eisenhower's parade car, the Tucker, and also the world's largest collection of Model J Doosan Birds, including ones owned by James Cagney and Max Bearer. The collection also features Al Capone's 1930 Cadillac and 1915 Model T Ford. The MGM Grand Hotel and Casino held its grand opening on December 18, 1993. The MGM with 5,005 rooms is located on the old site of the Marina Hotel on the Strip at Tropicana. The MGM's garage and theme park are situated on the old site of the Tropicana Golf Course. The Tropicana was the first hotel casino to be built at the famous Four Corners at Tropicana Avenue and the Strip. With 4,000 rooms, the Excalibur is one of the many Las Vegas mega resorts. Located at Tropicana Avenue and the Strip, the Excalibur portrays a medieval theme and presents King Arthur's Tournament with real jousting. The Desert Inn had its grand opening April 24, 1950. The grand event featured performers Edgar Bergen with Charlie McCarthy, Vivian Blaine, and a Don Arden Dancer. On a return trip to Las Vegas on Thanksgiving Eve in 1966, Howard Hughes began a self-imposed isolation at his tent house at the Desert Inn. His isolation would span four years. The Monte Carlo sandwiched between the Little Boardwalk and New York, New York celebrated its one-year anniversary in June of 1997. The Hilton is located one block from the Strip on 80 lushly landscaped acres. The latest entertainment attraction is the Star Trek Experience. The flame-shooting volcano is the trademark of the mirage and sets the stage for a tropical theme. Let's take a look inside. The mirage features a gigantic fish aquarium. A walk through the lush atrium leads us to fun in the sun. Back inside, but in an open-air environment, you'll discover taggers. The taggers can also be seen when they perform with Siegfried and Roy. These royal white taggers originate from the Himalayas and are extinct in the wild. You can watch these magnificent animals swim and play. Worstpolls lead us up to a It's really cool! This used to be a Check out that Great forest, that A short walk to the back of the Mirage is where you'll find dolphins diving and flipping. These dolphins have taken up residence in a unique water environment, consisting of over one million gallons of man-made seawater, two artificial coral reefs, and state-of-the-art environmental controls. The dolphin habitat is an educational experience for the whole family, and it's open seven days a week. In 1895, Charlie Fay invented the slot machine. Little did he know that his invention would grow to such great proportions. When he first invented the machine, each reel had ten stops, ten times ten times ten, for a possible 1,000 combinations. After Charlie Fay came a guy named Herbert Mills. He upped the odds a little bit by putting 20 stops on each reel. Now 20 times 20 times 20 is 8,000 possible winning combinations. With one pull of the handle or one push of a button, you could become the next millionaire. When we play blackjack, we always assume that the dealer's bottom card is a ten. So when the dealer shows two, three, four, five, or six, we always want to add ten to whatever area is showing. So in this case, we say the dealer has 16. Now we know the dealer has to take another card. The dealer must hit until he has at least 17. So we also know that he runs a risk of going over 21 and breaking. So that would tell you that if you had the same type of hand, if you had 12 through 16, you know that if you take another card, you can go over 21. If gambling isn't exciting enough for you, try bungee jumping. Las Vegas is also a great place for hot air ballooning. Getting married, taking your vows in a hot air balloon is a fun way to do it. Behind Circus Circus on the Strip is an amusing place called Grand Slam Canyon that provides a variety of thrilling rides. On such ride is the Canyon Blaster, a double loop corkscrew roller coaster. Riding on real tight. When it opened in July 1958, the Stardust had 1,032 hotel rooms, largest in the world. Lido de Paris, the famous French news show, opened the same day as the hotel and holds a record for the longest playing floor show in Las Vegas. At Bally's, you'll find a never ending kaleidoscope of nonstop action, spectacular entertainment, fashionable shopping, and world class accommodations. At the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, Bally's features the popular floor show Jubilee. Collagio, located on the site of the legendary Dunes Hotel, is set to open the summer of 1998. Caesar's Palace has brought world class shopping to Las Vegas. You can buy the very best of everything at the Forum Shops, from ice cream to fine art to an Armani suit. Our destinations outside of Las Vegas begins with Hoover Dam. Constructed between 1931 and 1935, it is one of the wonders of the modern world. Located about an hour east of Las Vegas, Hoover Dam is something everyone should experience. Here's a little bit of Hoover Dam trivia for you. There was enough concrete for the Hoover Dam to stretch a highway from San Francisco to New York. Lake Mead, formed by the Hoover Dam, has more than 550 miles of shoreline and is 115 miles long. The lake is a major recreational attraction of the southwest. Boating, swimming, fishing, and water skiing are all possibilities on Lake Mead. Most of the annual 3 million visitors to the Grand Canyon arrive via Las Vegas. They come to see a canyon that is 65 million years old and one of the seven wonders of the world. At the top of Lee Canyon is the Lee Canyon Ski Area, or Ski-Lee as it is called. Operated since 1962 by the Hatfield family, the base altitude is 8,500 feet. The ski runs go by the names of Keno, Blackjack, and Slot Alley. Lee Canyon is about an hour drive west of Las Vegas in the Toybee National Forest. These peaceful majestic mountains are just 20 minutes west of the excitement of the strip. A romantic walk through Red Rock will put you back in touch with Mother Nature. You'll enjoy the bright colored sandstone and beautiful desert flowers. In less than an hour north of Las Vegas, you can find yourself surrounded by the beauty of the Valley of Fire. Sapphire blue skies greet you as you explore this ancient Indian territory. It's easy to feel a presence of the Native Americans who left their legacy on this desert land. The petroglyphs, or carvings in rock, were made at several locations in the valley by the Anasazi people. The meaning of these symbols remains a mystery. We have one more stop before we head back to Las Vegas. Bonnie Springs Old Nevada, 30 miles west of Las Vegas, is a good place to have some chow, whittle your whistle, and watch the gunfights of the Old West. This was the Hacienda, New Year's Eve, 1997. mere 40 seconds. The Sands Hotel was imploded November 26, 1996, to make way for the new Venetian Mega Resort. We stand through an hourglass 44 years have passed at the Sands Hotel Casino. And now on this night, it's time to say good night to the Sands. After 44 years of the famous Rat Pack, Joy Bishop, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, yes, it's been wonderful. We thank you all. Viva Las Vegas. The Dunes was the third major hotel casino to open in the spring of 1955. In 1965, at the beginning of the Hughes Air Expansion boom, the Dunes added the 24-story Diamond of the Dunes, breaking the 1,000-room plateau. A new sign was also added and became the largest in the world at that time. The Dunes changed hands several times until it met its final fate October 27, 1993. Over 200,000 people crowded the strip for the big event. The landmark Hotel Casino was built between 1959 and 1963. It opened in July of 1969, right across from the Hilton Hotel. The landmark used to stand right behind me, but in November of 1995, it met the same fate as the Dunes Hotel and came tumbling down. What was once the tallest building in Las Vegas has been reduced to a giant parking lot. That Luxor beam of light, which you're seeing, but they're bright. Well, it should. It's the most powerful light beam in the world. The Luxor, one block south of Tafakana on the strip, features 2,500 rooms. This Egyptian pyramid was named after the religious center of an ancient Nile-based civilization and displays colorful holograms. Whether it's Formula One racing or landing a fighter on an aircraft carrier, the Luxor's Sega Virtual Land arcade brings you as close as possible to the new virtual reality. The Luxor showcases King Tut's tomb. The tomb, statues, and artwork have been recreated. Hi, Métis. I'm Métis. I'm the captain of the Luxor. I'm David Jones Locker, not before, as you wish, sir. Well, Dan Tanna's apartment complex in that series used to stand right behind me. Now it's a Guinness World of Records. Vegas is the Fremont Street area as it looked in the 1940s, with hotels like the Golden Gate, Pioneer Club, Golden Nugget, Four Queens, and Las Vegas Club. The next five decades brought many changes to downtown and a lot more glitter. It became known as glitter gold. However,次 chatting sales impaired. Four of the most photographed blocks in the world are on Fremont Street. However, the street was blocked off to vehicle traffic in December 1995 to make way for the Fremont Street Experience. Now get ready for the latest downtown attraction, the Fremont Street Experience. On December 14, 1995, the Fremont Street Experience debuted with a dome of nearly 2.1 million lights and 40 high-tech speakers per block. Watch, listen, experience.
