Hello, what sort of accounting check and balance system do you use to make sure that the money raised is used properly and not misused for personal gain, as so many TV evangelists have done? Well, our auditing system that we submit to is the finest and the most highly creditable out there. I forget what it's called, but we are audited regularly. We have to give an account and all those figures are made public. Do you understand, though, the suspicion of people about religion on television? Absolutely. I mean, we have seen many mistakes made openly, glaringly, and so from the onset, we've had great counsel. We've had the right kind of leadership that has taken these resources and shown us how to be accountable. Alec Quippa, Pennsylvania. Hello. Hi, good evening, Larry. Good evening, Coach. I would like to say that, Coach, I support what you're doing and your philosophy. What I'm wondering is if you're going to bow to the pressure from the feminist group and possibly have them attend your rallies in the future. No. We are not going to, as you say, bow to the pressure because really there isn't any pressure. There are a few concerned ladies out there, but the great majority support us. They have observed what we've done. Almost all of our programs are on national radio or many of them, and the ladies that listen to that are satisfied that what God's doing with men, they like it and they want to keep it that way. In a sense, you're saying you're exalting women. That's the end result, Larry. Therefore, true to your concept, you have to love the people in now. That's correct. They're women. That's right. We do love those ladies and we do realize that they're unduly burdened with the fears that they have. We just encourage them to drop their fears and let go and watch carefully what's being said. We have no political agenda. We are interested in raising ladies up and loving them just like they want us to. Are you surprised then at all the furor over this? Sometimes, but you can understand that men have not been consistent and that's where this comes from. No, but I mean Time magazine, major stories, everybody writing about you, front page, over 500,000 people marched to Washington. Doesn't that surprise you? Well, quite frankly, it's been really refreshing to see the reaction to all of these men going and the way it's been received. As I have gotten back to Denver and just kind of tapped into the paltz out there, there's a tremendous stirring going out there and it's a healthy thing because people are recognizing that God's doing something with men that is good. As I am observing that, it's exciting. Did you use stadiums as a concept because of the football background? It's because it's the biggest setting in which we can bring together large numbers and still have a captive setting. Because usually it starts with arenas where you don't get embarrassed in case 17,000 show up. It's a sellout of 17,000 show up at the Orange Bowl, you have three quarters empty. No, we're not really worried about being embarrassed. It's not embarrassing when you don't fill a stadium. The key to the stadium is does God show up? If He shows up in the power of His Spirit, and that's the other thing that happened this year, even though the attendance was down, the Spirit of God was pronounced. I mean, we were visited at every stadium by the Lord God Almighty and that's the issue. As long as we have that anointing, we'll continue to do these things. Have you got a count on how many were there Saturday in Washington? No, don't have a count. But I'm going to tell you the count that's important, the count that I believe is most important to the Lord, it's the diversity. Because God loves it when His children come together and get along in unity and harmony. And the diversity that we saw out there in that crowd, it was extraordinary. We are the body of Christ coming together. Did you get the idea from the million man march? No. Matter of fact, it was conceived in 1994, well before they marched. And Randy Phillips, our president, was on the mall jogging and he saw, he had a vision of men weeping in repentance before a holy God and asking forgiveness. He brought it back to us and we prayed about it and we believed it was something the Lord wanted us to do. Friday night, Susan McDougall is with us on Larry King Live. The strangest thing happened to me the other day, instead of traveling to a culture, I found myself traveling in a culture. I was on board Virgin Atlantic Airways and I found it was a place where people were happy to see you, where the feeling is we're human beings, you're human beings and this is going to be fun. Really? My husband is a promise keeper. And I was once in favor of many of the feminist groups. I really understand and can relate to many of the issues that they are concerned with. However, I believe at this time many are misinformed and they do not understand what Promise Keepers is about. My question is this. What and how will Promise Keepers do to educate these groups? You mean groups that speak out against them? Right. Are you going to take it out of the stadium and do other things, Bill? Well no, not really. Well, quite frankly what we see happening over the next couple years is we're going to go into a lot of stadiums, a lot of arenas. But to answer that question, I don't think that we're going to do anything directly to satisfy that other than the greater exposure that we get, then ladies are going to discover that this thing is not a threat to them. Wouldn't it help you, Bill, to have dialogues with people now? Perhaps. I mean, you're pure in your thoughts. We assume that they are in theirs. Why not sit down and air them out? That's a possibility. It's not something we've discussed until tonight. Well, haven't you given a thought that maybe I'd like to talk to Patricia Ireland? I really haven't. I sense a little hostility there and so I don't know that the time is right. But if we could amicably do that, that might be a healthy solution. But really the evidence is in the fruit. It doesn't really matter the rhetoric. Is this thing bearing fruit? Is God in fact changing men's hearts and is it a healthy thing that ladies don't need to fear? And that is happening in all people. We've been in existence seven years now, Larry. We've had the same message for seven years and there's been all kinds of opposition at different times. But the message hasn't changed and the results are very positive. Are you opposed to feminism as a concept? Well, what I'm in favor of is unity, harmony. I'm in favor of men and women working together to solve the problems because that's what I believe the Bible teaches. And so Jesus certainly reached out to ladies and had wonderful warmth and he was engaging with ladies and that's what men need to do. And so we need to continue to learn how to be the friends that ladies need us to be. But you do agree that women should be allowed to be, to quote the army, anything they can be legally. I believe that women should be able to use their God-given gifts right to the maximum and that men ought to help them realize that experience. How do people join? Well, really, promise keepers is not something you join. What we want to do is send you to your local church, turned on to the gospel of Jesus Christ. The way to join is go to a local church and get involved. That's the best way. That's what God ordained. He laid it out. He arranged it as an institution so that we would there go and be fed and be used to feed others and solve the problems within the individual communities. And there are no dues of any kind? No. How are you supported? Well, we do accept offerings. And the next two years we are going to open the stadiums. We've been charging $60 registration fee up until next year. And we announced in D.C. that we're no longer going to do that. We needed to do that at the onset to be able to develop a staff to gain some resource and to be able to get working revenue. But now we're shifting gears and we're trusting in faith that God's going to provide. We'll come back with more of Coach Bill McCartney, the founder and leader of the Promise Keepers. We're back with Coach Bill McCartney. Alleyne, Oklahoma. Hello. Yes, Coach. I have a question I'd like to revisit for the third time this evening. As founder of Promise Keepers, which emphasizes leadership, is it not now timely for Promise Keepers to provide that leadership with an organizational structure that includes families, thus strengthening and enhancing spousal partnerships, family values, and faith community bonds? Well, we certainly do. He means take whole families into the organization, men and husbands and wives at rallies. We certainly support what he said, and yet we believe that God has raised us up and called us to bring men to the maturity that they need. And I started to say earlier, Larry, and I didn't finish it, but we have called January 1st, the year 2000, we've called.
