weather never stops at a dependable forecast for where you live whenever you want it on KY 3 24 7 available on digital channel 3 dash 2 and cable this is an encore presentation of KY 3 news of the new hospital. Good evening to you, I'm Ethan Pohatz Lisa has the night off. A new hospital could jump start plans for a major new road across southern Green County. KY 3's Mike Landis live tonight at St. John's Hospital with more on why that medical center is expanding south. Good evening to you Ethan, you know until recently we watched as St. John's has grown upward in fact it was just under three years ago they opened the new addition there on the south side of the campus but for its new orthopedic hospital St. John's says it's going south of the city where there's plenty of room to grow but it's also a place where there's plenty of growing need for some better roadways. It could be considered the last frontier along Highway 65 and Springfield. The Evan 65 interchange is bustling with traffic but not with development. It was designated a decade ago as the starting point for a new cross county roadway. Until there was some level of activity that would justify the public expenditure of funds you know we were just pretty much sitting on the plans waiting. Now part of that throughfare set to eventually connect 65 and Campbell is rolling ahead thanks to St. John's Hospital. We're really excited about being that anchor and helping with the development of that east west arterial road. St. John's is building a new 105 million dollar orthopedic hospital here on Evans Road. We know certain things are for sure that our population around here is going to be growing and that the population is also going to be aging so that means a need for more orthopedic procedures. But a benefit for drivers could be found in strings the city of Springfield has attached. St. John's can't move forward with a building permit until there is assurance that there will be adequate access provided to their site. St. John's has to fork over half the cost of a new interchange and for the first leg of the parkway from 65 to Southwood it also has to help find ways to build the rest of the South County route. We anticipate that there will be some commercial activity occurring there and we're hoping that there will be because that's what will generate additional revenue to pay for future phases of the arterial. It's a road St. John's says it is willing to take. We think it will be a major benefit for the community as well. I know that many people are anxious for the building of that road. And the Springfield City Council is set to give a thumbs up or down to that development plan at its November 15th meeting. It all goes the way of St. John's a groundbreaking could be held in the next couple of months with construction taking about a year and a half Ethan. And a $105 million expansion has to mean new jobs right Mike? Yeah quite a few in the construction phase about 125 people will be building be put to work building it once the hospital is up and running they are expected to hire about 150 new permanent positions there at the facility Ethan. Alright Mike Landis live tonight in Springfield. No getting your Andes fix at the East Sunshine location at least for a while. 25 year old original Andes frozen custard stand caught fire this afternoon. KY3's Linda Russell live there tonight with the details. Yeah Ethan this is the first Andes location in Springfield and firefighters were called here at about 2 15 this afternoon after a passerby told employees inside that the roof was on fire. What started out as a regular work day at Andes turned into anything but. We had just gotten finished baking a bunch of baked goods for today. Kenina smelled something burning but didn't suspect the oven and especially not the roof. For a couple of hours I had smelt smoke but I thought it was a wood burning stove. The next thing employees knew a woman was telling them the roof was on fire. Luckily it's a type of restaurant where nobody goes inside so the employees evacuated very quickly we've got a crew just right up sunshine the station 7 they were here very quickly. Crews made a hole to get to the flames and put the fire out fast but so much for getting frozen custard here anytime soon. Oh yes yeah Andes is a very popular spot. We sure are sorry about Andes. Ruth Marshall and her three grandkids were disappointed when they drove up. I picked up one grandson from one school and another grandson from another school and we were going to have a little treat here so now we have a real dilemma. The origin of the fire turned out to be the neon lights but for some it just doesn't make sense. My five year old grandson said but grandma how can it be on fire they have ice cream to keep it cool. Many are glad this 25 year old store isn't a total loss. This is the oldest Andes so you know it's the mother store. For all the frozen custard fans out there Andes hopes to reopen on East Sunshine in about two weeks. I hope it will open again soon. Yeah it's a great great place. The fire marshal believes that rainwater a couple of days ago got into one of the neon lights on the outside of Andes and caused it to short out. He says it could have taken a couple of days to heat up because of the way those neon lights work. Now Andes is having their sign company check out the other lights on their other locations. They have three others here in Springfield alone and it'll be as we said about two weeks they hope and they'll reopen and the doll arrestment of the damage here is still undone. Ethan. All right well two weeks I guess in the big picture isn't that long it could have been a lot worse. Linda Russell live for us tonight in Springfield. Seventy-two-year-old man charged with seven counts of sexual abuse involving a young girl. Court documents tell us 72 year old Truman Cox of Marshfield admitted to sexually touching the girl several times at his home. The abuse began when the girl was seven years old continued through the age of 12. Cox is held in the Webster County Jail on a fifty thousand dollar bond tonight. Case that sat cold for 15 years now on trial in Greene County. Melvin Greene seen here accused of breaking into a Springfield apartment 15 years ago robbing two women then trying to rape them. He was linked to the crime four years ago while jailed in Illinois for another crime when authorities say his DNA matched that in a crime database. If convicted of all six counts Greene could get up to six life to sentences Hollister police are searching for a man in connection with the death of 29 year old Paul Lentz. Lentz died last night. Investigators say they're waiting on toxicology reports to figure out exactly what killed him. A letter from a resident revealed dozens of families received free bus service to Springfield schools despite living inside the mile and a half barrier. The letter sent to district administrators was from a person living near Hickory Hills school. She noticed her neighbors children were being bused two blocks to school. Turns out for the first month of school somewhere between 24 and 30 families with children in the English as a second language program were receiving bus service while their English speaking neighbors were not. The error stemmed from what administrators call a miscommunication within the transportation department. There was a list of students I guess that they were looking at that it said eligible and that meant they were eligible for ESOL classes and it was interpreted that meant they were eligible for busing. We're told the problem was fixed quickly. Families impacted were given two weeks notice before the bus service stopped. They were all given the option like all students who live outside the boundary to pay for bus service. Meanwhile enrollment is actually up in Springfield public schools. The district says just more than 24,100 students are in class this fall that's 169 more than a year ago. That means larger class sizes at a time when the district was hoping to have fewer students per teacher. Administrators blame a five million dollar budget cut that included the loss of 26 full time teaching positions. Outside earlier today the leaves changing on those trees changing rather rapidly too and it looks like our weather is about to do the same. Chief meteorologist Ron Hurst is in the storm team center tonight with our first forecast. You know Ethan leaf color is actually a function of short term moisture and so it would really be nice if we had some rain in here. It might help the color kind of brighten up across the Ozarks. There are spots that are very pretty and there are other spots that are a little bit dull. Let's get a look at your official high temperatures because with all the sunshine that we've had this month we've had some comfortable readings today. 73 degrees was the official high in Springfield and Branson. Lake of the Ozarks at 72 down to the south. Summer 74 at West Plains 75 at Harrison and Mountain Home topping out with a tie total a day of 76. Where are we headed tonight and tomorrow? Well tonight we'll have kind of a clear sky and nice sunrise in the morning. Temperature about 44 in the afternoon. It should be beautiful. 74 degrees is what I'm expecting. Again with plenty of sunshine. Now Ethan as you alluded to we've got some changes on the way. Could mean some rain on the horizon. I'll be back to talk about that in a few minutes. A candidate for the Missouri Senate seat has died of an apparent heart attack. 76 year old Benny Hatfield was found dead in his Sedalia home yesterday afternoon just hours before he was to address voters at a candidate forum. The Constitution Party candidate was running for the open 28th district Senate seat which covers Polk, Dallas, Cedar, St. Clair and a few other Ozarks counties. Tonight we continue our look at Decision 2010 with a focus on Missouri's 8th Congressional District. The battle brewing between Republican incumbent Joanne Emerson and Democrat Tommy Sowers. More tonight from KY3's Steve Grant. She's running on her Washington record including voting for the Wall Street bailout but not the stimulus package. What would you have done when faced with economic collapse in the United States of America? And that's the reason he repeats his campaign trail refrain for change. All the DC incumbents are to blame. Tommy Sowers likes to call himself new blood and emphasizes he won't be a rubber stamp for the White House or special interests. We stop these bailouts. We pass a balanced budget amendment and it's time that we end these wars. Right now we're spending $2 billion a week in Afghanistan. Joanne Emerson has 14 years in Congress as a moderate Republican known to work with moderate Democrats on spending and tax policy. We can't afford health care laws that put bureaucrats between us and our choices for care and we can't afford a federal government that runs $1.3 trillion deficits. They both somewhat agree on health care reforms needing fine tuning but Sowers is making a long shot bid in a solidly Republican district. The New York Times political unit predicts for every vote he gets Emerson can count on two more as an incumbent. Steve Grant, KY3 News. And tomorrow night we'll look at the fourth district race between Democrat Ike Skelton and Republican Vicki Hartzler. No matter where you live in the KY3 viewing area you can look up your sample ballot for the general election that is upcoming now. Look for the link at our home page, ky3.com. Next from us tonight at 10 a teenage boy rushed to the hospital after being hit by a car. He was on his bike. The car driven intentionally police say by his father. And a progress report from the Gulf six months after an explosion poured millions of gallons of oil into the water there. You're watching KY3 News at 10 with Lisa Rose, Ethan Foreheads, Storm Team News. And meteorologist Ron Hurst and sports director Ned Reynolds, the Ozarks number one newscast. Live Closed Captioning is brought to you by the law firm of Aaron Sachs and Associates committed to community service. A dad accused of driving over his own son on purpose. Police in Des Moines say the man spotted his fifteen year old son outside a liquor store with some friends. When the boy started riding away on his bicycle you saw there in the street, witnesses say his dad chased him in his van, knocked him down. The teen suffered a fractured leg. His father now faces the charges of assault with a motor vehicle. Six months ago today the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded creating the worst environmental disaster in our nation's history. Now still an entire region trying to get back on its feet. People back on the beaches today, the six month anniversary of the Gulf oil disaster. And while oil is no longer gushing into the sea and people are returning to white sandy beaches, BP continues its deep beach cleaning operation. After our SCAT team, shoreline cleanup assessment teams, find the depth of the oil if there is buried oil in areas, we go in with the tillers. And even though the well is permanently sealed, oil is still coming ashore. The federal government says 560 miles of coastline have oil on them across four states. 93 percent of Gulf waters are open for fishing. But Louisiana's shrimp catch is down 52 percent through the first six months of this year. And then there's the rest of the Gulf Coast economy. It seems like Groundhog Day every day around here. Businesses crippled by the spill continue to pile up claims. More than 220,000 have been filed, but only 76,000 have been approved and paid. Frustrations continue for residents and political leaders, including Tony Kennan, the outspoken mayor of Orange Beach, Alabama. We're pulling teeth to get things done and to fight a battle it seems like every day. But there's so much still to be done. Claims are not being paid like they should be, especially our big businesses. Scientists estimate some 200 million gallons of oil leaked into the Gulf. And while communities struggle to recover, experts believe it could take years before the spill's effects on the Gulf region are fully understood. Kurt Gregory, NBC News. And of course we know 11 workers on that rig were immediately killed by the explosion. Back here in the Ozarks, outside a beautiful fall day today. Perfect day for family fun and the great outdoors. Beautiful out today and wonderful when you look back at like the lack last four weeks, it seems like it's been very, very nice. You know, you go all the way back to mid September. Yeah. We've had two, maybe three rains, I guess since the middle part of September, which isn't very much. And really the day either side of those rains have been very pretty too. So the rain has come and gone very quickly. There's still areas in southern Missouri I'm hearing from the weather watchers that have not had a lot of rain this month. And so we need some moisture pretty badly and it looks like we'll have an opportunity Saturday, Sunday and Monday before the system moves on and we get back to some nicer weather. We're going to start off with the temperatures tonight. Huge disparity. I mean, there's like a 15 degree temperature difference across the viewing area. It goes from around 47 degrees in humans, Ville 48, a lake of the Ozarks all the way up to a 60 degrees in Harrison and 62 degrees in mountain home here in Springfield. Right now we were 51 degrees. We do have a clear sky out there. By the way, just to the right of the moon out there is the planet Jupiter. So you may see that bright star out there is actually a planet. Our humidity right now, 74% dew point at 43 degrees. So as our winds continue to lighten up tonight, there is that potential to drop all the way down to the mid forties for our overnight lows. Speaking of winds right now, they're out of the west southwest at seven miles an hour. Our high temperature today, if you're just joining us with 73, 40 degrees this morning was our low. When you add each of them together, divide by two to get the average, you know what? We're pretty close to a pretty typical late October day here in the Ozarks. Of course, we didn't have any rain. Here's a look at our radar satellite composite. It's a nice clear sky across the entire region tonight. There may be a hit and miss cloud hero there. But basically high pressures in control over the central U.S. is going to give us a beautiful night tonight. Tomorrow is going to be a wonderful day, but we do have a storm lurking. For that we go to our national radar satellite composite. Notice the spin in the clouds down here in southwestern Arizona. That's where our upper level low is. This system is getting kicked onto the east northeast. Should move into southern Colorado tonight and early tomorrow. As we head on into Friday though, this thing is going to get knocked out into the plains. Already there's some shower activity associated with this. And it looks like we're finally going to get some decent gulf moisture into the middle part of the country that's been lacking for the entire month. So here's how things are going to work. Tomorrow high pressure over the Ohio Valley. Lots of sunshine. Going to be a great day. Temperatures probably going back up into the 70s. But just south of here, we do have a considerable amount of tropical moisture. As our area of low pressure moves into Colorado, our winds start to come out of the south. That moisture comes back up across the plains so that when this storm system moves in Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, it'll have enough moisture to finally give us some widespread shower activity. So here's how that weather could possibly look over the next couple of days. We start off tonight. When we put this into motion tomorrow, a beautiful morning. There may be some cloud cover roll in in the late afternoon or evening. We're not going to have any significant weather. As we head into Friday, we start to notice that rain develop out west. Our cloud cover gets a little thicker. Late Friday evening, there's going to be some thunderstorms out to the west. Right now, it looks like the football games will go off without a hitch, but we'll keep an eye on that for you. 44 to 48, under a clear sky is what we're going for our overnight lows. Tomorrow's high temperatures, 74 to 78, just a beautiful day in the Ozarks. Our seven day forecast. A chance for rain on Friday, probably after 10 p.m. A better chance on Saturday. In fact, there could be two rounds of storms on Saturday. The second one could have some very strong thunderstorms with it. More rain Sunday and Monday. By the middle of next week, well, fall returns. Alright, sounds good. A plane buzzing the Golden Gate Bridge creates a big buzz on the internet. This jumbo jet was doing above San Francisco Bay and why it freaked people out. And an ape goes ape. A chimp rampaging through a Kansas City neighborhood. Take a look. It's video shot from a cop car dash cam. There's the chimp pushing a trash can into the front of the car, jumping on top, kicking the windshield, cracking it in fact. It's a powerful kick. Pet chimpanzee apparently broke free from its chains. Wandered around the neighborhood. There's another view. This is insane. Its owner was eventually able to coax the thing back into the cage. That owner given a ticket for having a dangerous animal within the city limits and I would guess, I'm not sure of this, but I would guess you might have to pay for the damage done to that patrol car. Federal Aviation Administration says a United Airlines jet that appears to buzz over the Golden Gate Bridge in video circulating on the internet posed no danger. Flyovers were performed earlier this month as part of San Francisco's annual Fleet Week. Look at this. In the video, the jet makes a wide turn before flying low over the bridge. The FAA says flight restrictions were in the area and that an air traffic controller was directing the plane's altitude. The people on the ground, you know what they feared. They feared, as you might imagine by looking at this, they feared another 9-11 might be happening. Stick around. I was told that I was at risk for sudden cardiac death. I was 23 years old.
