The Extra Hot Question to Maid and Blush, next extra, tonight at 6.30 on NBC 5. Live Radar on NBC5i.com. You're watching NBC 5 News at 6. He talked about being weak. They asked him at one point, are you okay? And they really couldn't get a clear answer. Alone and stranded in heavy snow-capped mountains, avalanche conditions up there tonight. The search is on for two North Texas hikers missing in Oregon. Good evening, I'm Mike Snyder. And I'm Jane McGarry. One of the hikers reached out to his family over the weekend saying he was stranded in a snow cave just below the summit of Mount Hood. That was the last communication with the men. Today search crews were ordered off the mountain because of dangerous conditions. NBC 5's Nigel Wheeler is live with the latest on the developing story. Nigel, what do you have? Jane, search crews say it is just too windy and there's too much snow up on the mountain to continue that search up there. It is just too dangerous. Just a short while ago we spoke with one of the climbers' friends here at this Dallas office building. He talked about being weak. They asked him at one point, are you okay? At 11,000 feet up from a snow cave in an Oregon mountain, Kelly James talked to his family on a cell phone. The signal wasn't very good. It was hard to communicate back and forth. The call caused concern. James is one of three men who set out to climb Mount Hood in Oregon. He left last Wednesday along with Brian Hall of Dallas and their buddy from New York. James' friend, Mike Andruvet, believes the men are separated. There seemed to be an indication from the phone call that he was not with Brian, which is a source of concern for us because they would have been inseparable. Police in Oregon say the men picked one of the most dangerous mountain passes in the most dangerous part of the year. James has been climbing for 25 years. He is someone who does not go into these things without a lot of thought, a lot of care. In fact, those of us who know Kelly are taking comfort in the fact that he is so experienced. Once again, the search has been suspended. For now, no word on yet when that search will continue again, but we understand it is still snowing on that mountain in Oregon. We are now live in Dallas, Nigel Wheeler, NBC 5. Thanks, Nigel. Arlington police are trying to get to the bottom of a deadly shooting. Investigators say that someone shot the man in his truck in the 6100 block of Ivy Glen Drive. Police are questioning a husband and wife who live in the house where the shooting happened because the wife knew the victim, according to police. Officers are not telling us anything more about that relationship. Robbery may be the motive behind the murder of a Fort Worth man in his 60s. The video or the victim was found in his home this morning, and police tell us that things are missing from that home. And a police chase ended with a crash in Fort Worth early this morning. Officers were chasing a suspected thief when he crashed into another car at Alta Mesa and Hemphill. The suspect and another driver went to the hospital, and police say they found items stolen from Wal-Mart in that car. A Bedford woman accused of stabbing her roommate in the neck turned herself into police. Bedford police are now holding 25-year-old Michelle Donahue after she turned herself in this afternoon. She's being held on an outstanding warrant and $25,000 bond. The victim is in the hospital after undergoing surgery. And police are looking for two women who robbed an Arlington McDonald's overnight. The women walked into the restaurant on Watson Road and 360, demanded money, and left. Fortunately, nobody was injured during the robbery. Another city is cracking down on crime by reminding you to take, lock, and hide. Police in North Richland Hills are posting signs at businesses to encourage shoppers to take their belongings out of their cars, lock the doors, and hide their valuables. They're looking for your car. They see laptops, they see presents, they see lots of boxes, and they see an opportunity. The signs are going to be installed at businesses all across that city. Dallas is the latest North Texas city to crack down on red light runners by setting up cameras at intersections and launching an emotional campaign to remind you to stop at those lights. NBC5's Ken Caldoff is live with the story. Ken? Jane, the rush to get home makes Commerce at Central hear the number one red light running intersection in the city. And so it is one of the first to get cameras intended to make Dallas safer. It's heart wrenching and it's just, it's a hurt that like never will go away. Christina Cervantes' mother was killed six months ago in a red light running accident. Dallas officials say their new cameras to catch people who do it will save lives. 35 percent of our intersection fatalities are related to red light running. That's a large figure. The cameras snap a picture of cars in the intersection when the light is red. Drivers get a $75 citation in the mail, $150 for a second offense. But it's only a civil case. Christina's brother David complains it should be a criminal matter with stiffer fines. If you can save one life out there, it's well worth it. We're doing the most that we can within the law. As they unveiled their program today, city officials promised to reinvest the $9 million they expect to make from the cameras on other traffic safety improvements. Neighbors at the corner of Fitzhugh and Gaston welcome the cameras. That's pretty cool right there. It's all over Mesquite and Garland where I live, you know, so you gotta do what you gotta do. We're gonna catch ya and it's gonna cost ya. Stop on red. It's public awareness and it gets it out there and gets the public attention that this is a huge problem. Four Dallas camera-covered intersections will grow to 60 by April, but the next 30 days will bring only warnings, not tickets. For more details on the Dallas program, visit NBC5i.com and click news links. Reporting live, Ken Kaltoff, NBC5 Dallas. Thanks, Ken. The once vibrant Arcadia Theater on Greenville will be demolished tomorrow. The historic building was destroyed in a massive fire over the summer. Developers in the area will rebuild on the land. Dallas police say several witnesses have come forward in that tanker truck accident that left a person dead on I-30 at Beckley last month. Charles Lucky was killed when his semi hit an abandoned vehicle, and now officers say they know who abandoned that car on the freeway, but there is no word on when they'll make an arrest. A state lawmaker from Seguin wants to make hunting available to everyone, and he filed a bill for the 2007 legislative session today that would allow legally blind hunters to use some type of laser sight or lighted pointing instrument to allow them to hunt. And if approved, the hunter would have to carry proof that they are indeed legally blind. A conservation group is rushing to raise the money to buy 400 acres of Eagle Mountain Lake from the state and turn it into a new park. Things have been dry and look at the view from the Frisco Square as we head through sunset over the last couple of hours and the holiday lights appear. 68 degrees at Frisco Square right now. West winds at eight. Beautiful day. High of 72 degrees. Let's check the rest of North Texas right now with our temperatures. 69 in Dallas, 64 degrees in Fort Worth. Stephenville, 64. So we're cooling down now as temperatures settle down after sunset. Sherman's already down into the upper 50s at 59 degrees. Other temperatures right now. Muskegon Garland, 63. Addison and Plano at 68 right now. McKinney's down to 60. It's 58 in Denton. Keller, 60. DFW in the South Lake area at 62 right now. It's still 72 though in Grand Prairie. 67 in Oak Cliff and 66 degrees around Arlington and Mansfield. First thing in the morning we'll have a light west to southwest wind and as we head through the day we'll notice that wind swinging into more of a west and then maybe a northwest direction as we head into tomorrow evening. But look at the temperature. Still well above normal. 73 tomorrow in Dallas and Fort Worth. A little cooler in Denton and Corinth. McKinney and Frisco and Plano and Richardson around 72 degrees. In fact we'd have to go into Hunt County, Greenville at 69 degrees for one of the cool spots. If you can call December's high of 69 a cool spot. We did see the showers and thunderstorms that we hoped would develop over north Texas. Those have already developed but they've developed east of our area and that means things will stay dry here. The two fronts across the country really won't affect our Texas weather too much. There is an area of unsettled weather moving toward the coast and that's going to spread quite a bit of rain from Seattle down to the bay. But most of that energy will pass to the north of Texas. About the only thing we have going is a trough line out to our west this evening. As that trough moves through that's going to help swing our winds around a little bit tomorrow as well. So again southwest to west in the morning then west to northwest by the end of the afternoon. Temperatures above normal for the low 44 degrees and well above normal for the high temperature on Tuesday. With the sunny skies temperatures should shoot up to 72 degrees and we'll call that warm. Still short of record territory but 15 degrees above the normal high temperature tomorrow. Forecast as we check out the next 24 hours temperatures drop into the upper 50s this evening. 44 degrees first thing in the morning but a quick rise with those temperatures tomorrow. A gorgeous day. The wind will shine Wednesdays 10 miles per hour or less. 64 by midday heading for an afternoon temperature of 72. We've got a five day forecast that looks terrific as well. Looks more like April or October than December. Temperatures well for the cool day 69 degrees Thursday and as we head toward we'll say Friday, Saturday and Sunday we'll see temperatures back into the mid 70s. That is a terrific looking weekend coming up. That's why we live in North Texas and not Colorado. You got it. We love it. Yeah thanks a lot. The battle between a small North Texas boutique and big business is heading to the highest court in the land. NBC5 Carol Wang is live in Flower Mound with the Brighton battle. Carol? Well Jane this whole price war started because of a sale. Now four years later it's a question of law. There's no rush quite like the one you get when you bag a bargain. I want to tell everybody when I find a good bargain. I never pay full price I always wait until it goes on sale. But how good sales will be in the future could be determined by the Supreme Court over the issue of whether manufacturers have a say over how low a store can sell their goods. It goes to the rights of consumers, it goes to the rights of small business owners and it goes to the rights of manufacturers and how our whole economic engine is going to work. This case started when K's Closet says it started selling Brighton at prices below what Brighton wanted. The company pulled its products and the legal battle began. Cutting prices in order to increase business is the very essence of competition. Competition is what both sides say they're fighting for. The lawyer for Brighton says allowing small manufacturers some control with retail prices helps them protect their products integrity. But it's important to keep it competitive and reasonable. That's what both sides say they want. Phil Smith says he's lost half his business defending that principle. We'll do our best to stay open. We love what we do. I'll always have. Now this case is expected to go in front of the Supreme Court in March of next year. Meanwhile, the Smiths are also appealing to lawmakers hoping they will help him strengthen laws against antitrust and price fixing. Reporting live, Carol Wang, NBC5, Flower Mound. Thanks, Carol. A group of Latino organizations hopes to force a citywide election on several anti-illegal immigration ordinances over in Farmer's Branch. The ordinances make English the city's official language, prohibit landlords from renting to illegal immigrants, and requires police to enforce federal immigration laws. LULAC turned in 1,300 signatures today asking for that election. Texans are going to get another sales tax break on their federal income tax returns. Before recessing for the year, Congress agreed to allow residents in seven states, including Texas, to once again deduct sales tax on their federal income tax returns. And as you prepare those returns, it is important to remember, though, that the IRS already printed the 1040 forms for this year, and they do not include the line to deduct sales tax. The North Texas Poison Control Center is reminding you this is the time of year you should pay close attention to the kind of decorations and plants you bring into your home. That's because some are toxic to you, your children, and animals like holly and mistletoe berries. Just eating a few can cause vomiting, cramps, and diarrhea. The poinsettia isn't toxic, but the plant sap can be an irritant. Don't forget, ornaments, tinsel, and angel hair can also be a problem if ingested. Any time someone eats a plant or a plant sap breaks out your skin, you need to call 911 or go directly to the emergency room. The experts also suggest a check for alcohol and everything from drinks to perfume. Those, too, can be toxic to your children. A winning trip for the Oak Cliff 49ers thanks to generous North Texans. The football team and cheer squad made the trip down to Orlando for the national championship, and we are happy to report back to you. They all came home big winners. Now, sports with NBC5's Newy Scruggs. Randy Galloway made a great point in the Star Telegram today. Sean Payton's offensive brainpower was wasted for three years under Bill Parcells at Valley Ranch. And I know this, Payton Saints laid it on the Cowboys last night. You saw it right here on the Big Five. Tony Romo came back down to earth. He couldn't find any rhythm, had his worst game as a starter, but he also didn't have any time. The Cowboy defense was horrible, giving up 42 points in just two quarters, the second and the third. And the play of quarterback Drew Brees to the Saints, outstanding five touchdown passes. The Saints blow them out by 25 points, and after the game, the Cowboys were stand up about their whooping. Anytime you lose, it's not a good feeling, but everyone knows you're going to lose. If you let this affect you, it will affect your next game. So as soon as I leave here today, I'm going to try my best to let it go. We're going to have to play hard, so we're going to go back to work and get better because maybe we weren't as good as we thought. The Tuna has to get the Cowboys ready to play the Falcons on Saturday night in Atlanta. Despite getting roughed up by the Saints, they're still in first place in the NFC East. But the tape of this one is hard to look at. The safeties took a brunt of the five touchdowns that were allowed. Well, we didn't play well at that position last night. And on a couple of these throws, they're right there for some reason because we didn't make the play. I think we have people that they have particular strengths and sometimes they get into areas where they're not as comfortable. The Rangers are still trying to land more pitching. Mark Molder came to Arlington for a visit today. Molder won't be able to pitch until mid-May. They did add a center fielder. Kenny Lofton will get a one-year deal. He's 39 years old, spent last season with the Dodgers. Lofton, along with Frank Catalonato, gives the Rangers some good guys at the top of the lineup. The Mavericks are in action tonight. The Cowboys play Saturday night at the NFL Network. Some folks aren't able to get it, so they have to go to a bar to watch it. Well, that might be okay with some folks.
