John turns up the heat. Obviously somebody screwed up here. Next, People's Court. Today at 12 noon on KVOS. At Sacred Heart Hospital every employee takes pride in his work. Scrubs, weeknights at 6 and 7.30 beginning September 18. This is KVOS TV DT. Good morning. With news from around the neighborhood, local sports and the latest weather forecast. This is News View with Ty Ray and Greg Otterholt. Ahead on News View, the Northwest Washington Fair is a wrap. We'll tell you how many people attended the big event. And Bellingham's Lighthouse Mission has a warning about giving money to help the homeless. Thanks for joining us. It is Monday morning August 21 at 6.30, Ty Ray alongside Joe Bates in for the vacationing. Greg Otterholt. And it was a terrific, terrific weekend. Weather-wise went out to the fair on Saturday. A little warm out there, got a little toasty. There was a, I bet there was a lot of people there on Saturday. There were quite a few people there on Saturday. I think that's Greg's problem. He had too much fare yesterday. Exactly. Well anyway, it's going to be a nice day. Let's go outside and take a look at downtown Bellingham. There is Bellingham High School and the Assumption Church getting ready to meet today. Of course, nobody in the high school yet, but that is coming soon. Let's go down to the surface and take a look at current temperatures, 56 in Bellingham, 54 in Burlington. Linden has 56 and Sioux Mass is up to 62 already. That is a precursor of what's going to happen in the Eastern Frasier, lower Frasier Valley today. Friday Harbor, 55 right now. It's going to be warm east of us, but not too bad here. Here's a look at the satellite pictures and really not too much to show. A little bit of an onshore flow bringing us some marine clouds, but today plenty of sunshine, temperature 73, and then we're going to cool off tomorrow and then the mid 70s for the rest of the week. Here's what's making local and regional headlines this morning. The Washington State Department of Agriculture was at last week's Northwest Washington Fair in Linden. Inspectors were checking for any signs of the bird flu. Officials say since many flocks come together at fairs, they're a good place to monitor. The Asian bird flu has made news worldwide, but there's yet to be a case in the United States. State housing sales are down 12 percent from this time last year, but one familiar trend continues. While demand may be down, prices are not. Here in Washington, state housing prices are up 15 percent from a year ago. New baggage restrictions at airports are having a ripple effect. Five Vancouver duty-free shops at the airport have been closed and 70 employees have been laid off. Similar layoffs have occurred across Canada because sales dropped significantly following the ban of liquids and gels following the recent alleged terrorist plot in Great Britain. And now with a look at our top national stories, here's Barbara Hall. Salkar has arrived in Los Angeles from Thailand. He's ultimately headed for Boulder, Colorado, where he's expected to face charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and child sexual assault in connection with the 1996 killing of John Benet Ramsey. Saddam Hussein faces yet another court proceeding. The former Iraqi ruler is on trial today for charges of genocide against ethnic Kurds in a 1988 military campaign. Hussein is still waiting the verdict in a separate murder trial involving the deaths of Shiites. He faces the death penalty in both cases. Tiger Woods is on top of his game. He won the PGA Championship Sunday, marking his 12th career major. Only Jack Nicholas has more majors with 18. For Headlines, I'm Barbara Hall. Next on News, here we look back at last week's Northwest Washington Fair. Stay with us. Swiffer gives cleaning a whole new meaning. Come and see what's in store for you at Samuels. The Northwest Washington Fair is over and the big question is about the attendance. News use Joe Bates looks at this year's turnout. The Northwest Washington Fair for 2006 is history and will go down as a record fair. Fair manager Jim Barron has just completed his third fair as manager. Attendance was up. You know it seems like every day was better than the previous day and we set some attendance records this year so we're really happy. Last year with a little bit of rain attendance was just short of 200,000. This year attendance will be well over that mark. You just can't discount the weather. I mean to have the gorgeous weather that we had all week it was just perfect. And secondly we had a great entertainment lineup but you know the entertainment is important but we still only our grandstand holds 4,000 people. Not bad. And when 34,000 people come to the fair there's a lot of people that aren't coming for entertainment too. Surveys say there's one thing above all others that draws people to the fair. The number one thing is the animals. So you've got the beef exhibits, you've got the dairy exhibits, you've got the chicken, the poultry, the lawn. People love to see the animals so some of that doesn't change but the animals are new. The exhibitors are different and so that's a big thing that people come back for every year. Barron is quick to give credit to the fair staff. We have six year round fair employees and the number of fair employees swells to 300 the week of the fair. And our staff is just phenomenal because they go from six of us just working year round and all of a sudden we have to supervise 300 people to get all of the work done. Just a tremendous staff. One of the little known parts of the fair is the 4-H exhibits. And inside the 4-H barn is a 4-H kitchen where members plan, cook and serve meals throughout fair week. The kids are judged on a variety of aspects. Friday I became an unofficial 4-H judge along with Craig Mayberry just in time for breakfast. For Newsview, I'm Joe Bates. The confessed killer of young John Benet Ramsey is now in Los Angeles. Sumi Das is in Boulder, Colorado with the latest. With immigration and customs enforcement agents at his side, murder suspect John Mark Carr made the 15 hour journey from Bangkok to Los Angeles Sunday aboard a Thai Airways jet. Inevitably it will be going through your mind that there is an accused murderer in the same cabin, in the same, just a few seats away from you. At the request of the airline, Carr was not handcuffed, although federal agents escorted him to the restroom and Carr was not allowed to close the door. Now in the custody of the Los Angeles Police Department, Carr was flown by helicopter from the airport to a correctional facility in downtown LA. Further details of Carr's life in Bangkok have surfaced. Carr's hotel bill reveals calls made to a medical clinic catering in cosmetic surgery, including sex change operations. Doctors acknowledge Carr visited the clinic but wouldn't elaborate on what treatment he received. One connection has been explained. A Boulder freelance journalist says he introduced Carr and the University of Colorado professor who ultimately alerted authorities about the suspected killer. Michael Sandrock says Carr, who he met in Paris in 2002, was fascinated with the Ramsey case. He asked me my opinion of it and I said that some people think the parents did it, some people think there was an intruder, and he asked me what I thought. I said, well I really don't have an opinion either way and when I said something about the intruder he kind of smiled a little bit. The Boulder County District Attorney's Office has said little about Carr since his arrest, but a spokeswoman says they will seek extradition of Carr from California to Colorado. In Boulder, Colorado, I'm Simi Das. When we come back, Joe's got your weather forecast. You're watching News View. Don't delay. Call 800-218-1453. Coming up, we'll tell you how to give to local nonprofits so you are sure the money is being used properly. That's just ahead on News View. If you're ready for your own home and money is tight, you're probably asking yourself questions like, what kind of home can we get without a huge down payment? How about top quality homes like these? Or you're wondering, what kind of home can we afford on our income? What if you could have one like these? And if your credit isn't absolutely perfect, you might worry, what kind of home can we get if our bank turns us down? What if you could have one of these? Or what kind of home can we get when we can't afford mortgage payments higher than our present rent? For many people, it's been homes like these. Now, you probably want to know, how can I make this happen for me? We're American Home Partners. When others say you can't afford a home, we'll show you how you can. News View Weather is brought to you by Roger Jobs, your Porsche, Audi, Jeep and Volkswagen dealer, located at 2200 Iowa Street, Bellingham. Hey, how about we give away some prizes? We'd like to thank all of you who stopped by the Northwest Washington Fair and said hello and put your name in here. Alright, Joe, we're giving away a punch card to the coffee hound here in Bellingham. Everybody likes coffee. Should we dig way down? Dig way down deep in there for the winner. Uh-oh, my hands are too dry. So I'm not cheating or anything. No, they're not marked. Brian...oh. I don't know, but Brian, you're the winner. Brian Barclay. Yeah, there we go. Brian Barclay of London. Yeah, he's even got a fan club as you hear. Yeah, that's great. He may not be able to say his name correctly, but he's got a fan club. No, that's Brian. I think it's Brian Barclay from London. We'll be giving you a call. You are the winner of this coffee hound punch card here in Bellingham. Everybody likes coffee. Everybody likes coffee. Well, not everybody, but... Most people. Hey, let's go outside and take a look at the North Sound Alarm Weather Camera. And there is a nice picture of Bellingham Bay and the sun coming up over our beautiful city. And people waking up. So another nice day today. And let's take a look at the forecast for today. Sunny, well, we're going to be in the mid-70s, and that's just right. It was a little bit warm yesterday, but today we're going to cool off a little bit. Warmer to the south of us. We'll see some passing clouds, and the high will be 75. The lower Fraser Valley and Sumas, Abbotsford, those areas are going to see a little warmer today. Probably the low 80s, you know, maybe the mid-80s. Clear tonight. 55, and then we'll see increasing clouds overnight tonight, and the days are getting a little bit shorter. 814. Tomorrow, you're wondering, cloudy in the morning and then partly cloudy in the afternoon, but not too bad. 73 to 75, a little warmer in the outlying areas. Of course, the lower Fraser Valley, always warmer. It was really warm there yesterday. I was up there yesterday and up in the valley, and it was probably about 90. Partly cloudy in the mountains, 75, and if you're going to be heading to the mountains today, maybe to Artist Point or do some hiking. Watch out for those afternoon thunderstorms. Could be a possibility up in the Cascades today, so you want to watch out for that because the weather can change rapidly. 79 was the high yesterday in Bellingham. 52 was the low, a little above average. 85 was the high back in the 60s and the low, 1945. Here's a look at the satellite pictures. Not too much to show. A little bit of an onshore flow developing tonight and tomorrow. That's why we'll see that marine layer coming in, but high pressure still in control, keeping the major systems away from us, but the difference will be a little bit of an onshore flow tonight and tomorrow. Here's the week ahead, the work week. Not too bad. A little more cloudiness on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then warming up slightly, but not up into the 80s or 90s. Without that heat, guess where you're going to need to go? All over to eastern Washington. 99 in Walla Walla today. 100 in Yakima. 98 in Wenatchee. 82 in Vancouver and Portland. On the coast, of course, will be a little cooler. 83 in Seattle will be a little warmer in southern Puget Sound than around here. Port Angeles will be up to about 73 today, and we will be near 75 in mostly sunny conditions. Ty? The number of homeless people living in Whatcom County is increasing. Many of them are families with children. News use Joe Bates caught up with the director of the Lighthouse Mission at the Northwest Washington Fair. He has some tips on how you can help. When you give to help local nonprofits to meet the needs of the community, you want to make sure it goes to that need. Helping hands of Fairfield, California is collecting money, but it's not going to meet the needs stated. Well, I had an individual approach me recently asking for a donation for the homeless, and after a few questions, they weren't providing any services. So I felt that that was wrong, and I did call the local police, and they're aware of this. According to the Lighthouse Mission staff, helping hands was asked to leave Bellis Fair Mall, where they were soliciting. Puginski says when others are collecting money that isn't going to the local needs, it hurts the groups that are meeting those needs. Givers should be aware of where the money is going. The Lighthouse Mission does no telemarketing, and if someone is doing something for the Lighthouse Mission, they'll have a raised seal identification. So you'll be able to verify their ID, but we do no telemarketing, and we do no door-to-door. Now, once in a while, a youth group or something will be raising money for the mission, and we appreciate that, but we'll be able to verify the identity. Puginski says telemarketers are actually paid solicitors. Be very wary of groups calling you, soliciting on the behalf of others, because what they're getting paid is ridiculous, sometimes as much as 80 cents on a dollar. So you want to make sure your donation is going to services. That's what I believe. The Lighthouse Mission is very careful with the money you give. Last year, if you take all of our donations, cash and in-kind, we were probably around 12 percent on a dollar going to fundraising and administrative costs, which is very good. The Better Business Bureau's cutoff is 55-45. We were 88-12. For NewsView, I'm Joe Bates. Now to national politics. Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman is now running as an independent, following his defeat in that state's primary. Lieberman is a supporter of the Iraq War, and now he is getting help from an unlikely source, the GOP. Here's Elaine Kehano. After a weekend at Camp David, President Bush returned to Washington, where the political debate over Iraq and national security grew more complex. Senator Joe Lieberman, on the outs with Democrats over his staunch support of the Iraq War, tried to distance himself from the president by repeating his call for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to step down. I believe that our conduct of the war in Iraq would benefit from some fresh leadership at the Pentagon. Lieberman was defeated in Connecticut's primary by anti-war candidate Ned Lamont. Now running as an independent, Lieberman is standing by his assertion that setting a deadline for U.S. troop withdrawals would be a mistake. Terrorists, al-Qaeda and the rest would use Iraq as a safe haven from which to strike other countries in the Middle East and the United States of America. I'm concerned that he is making a Republican case and he is uttering almost the same words as Vice President Cheney, and I think it's inappropriate. The fact is, Joe Lieberman is out of step with the people of Connecticut. Within the GOP, there is also dissatisfaction over foreign policy. Republican Senator Chuck Hagel, a potential presidential candidate in 2008, criticized the administration's attempts to isolate countries like Iran. Iran probably has more influence in Iraq today than any other country. They are the big winners so far in the Middle East. I don't see how the Middle East is getting better, how America is safer, how the world is safer, as a result of isolating or attempting to isolate countries and not deal with them. And continuing disagreements on Iraq from another potential presidential hopeful, Republican Senator John McCain. All along, we have not had enough troops on the ground to control the situation. Many, many people knew that and we're paying a very heavy price for it. But I want to emphasize that we cannot lose this. It will cause chaos in Iraq and in the region. And it's a, I still believe that we must prevail. Iraq continues to be the primary issue weighing down President Bush's approval ratings. But by linking Iraq to the larger war on terror, Mr. Bush is trying to make the case that success in Iraq is inextricably linked to security for Americans. Elaine Kehano, CNN, The White House. News View Sports is brought to you by Yeagers Sporting Goods, the local source of sports gear for over 80 years, located on Northwest Avenue in Bellingham. It is 6.51, well it's only preseason, but the Seahawks looked much better against the Cults last night than they did in their exhibition opener against the Cowboys. The Cults first team though made it look easy in the first quarter. Katen Manning on target to Reggie Wayne, 30 yards and a touchdown. Cults go up in the game, 7 to nothing. The Seahawks took advantage of Indy's second team, Seattle's Julian Peterson with the head of quarterback Jim Sorge. The Seahawks' Mike Green will never score an easier touchdown than he did right there. Fourth quarter, Seattle's Larry Weaver fumbling the football near the goal line. Chris Spencer recovers and the Seahawks win at Indy, 30 to 17. Would the Mariner-Woe's end at Anaheim? Seattle with a two-run homer here in the fourth from Richie Sexson to put the Mariners up 2 to nothing, but back come the Angels in the eighth. Garrett Anderson singles off JJ Putz. The knock here ties the score at 2 to 2, and it remained 2 to 2 until the bottom of the ninth. And Putz once again would give up a single. Unfortunately, this is a game-winning hit. Sean Figgins with the base hit. The Mariners have lost 11 straight games. Seattle loses on the road at Anaheim. Angels three Mariners to their 11th straight loss. And in case you missed it, over the weekend the Mariners traded Jamie Moyer to the Phillies for two minor leaguers. Jamie is gone. We'll be right back. Doctors acknowledge Carr visited the clinic, but wouldn't elaborate on what treatment he received. One connection has been explained. A Boulder freelance journalist says he introduced Carr and the University of Colorado professor who ultimately alerted authorities about the suspected killer. Michael Sandrock says Carr, who he met in Paris in 2002, was fascinated with the Ramsey case. He asked me my opinion of it, and I said that, you know, some people think the parents did it, some people think there was an intruder, and he asked me what I thought. I said, well, I really don't have an opinion either way, and when I said something about the intruder, he kind of smiled a little bit. The Boulder County District Attorney's Office has said little about Carr since his arrest, but a spokeswoman says they will seek extradition of Carr from California to Colorado. In Boulder, Colorado, I'm Simi Das. What's it they say? Politics can make for strange bedfellows, and that's the case in Connecticut where incumbent Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman recently lost in the primary there. Now he is running as an independent, and he's being backed by the GOP. Lieberman is a supporter of the war in Iraq. Elaine Keanu has more. A terrorist, al-Qaeda and the rest would use Iraq as a safe haven from which to strike other countries in the Middle East and the United States of America. I'm concerned that he is making a Republican case, and he is uttering almost the same words as Vice President Cheney, and I think it's inappropriate. And the fact is, Joe Lieberman is out of step with the people of Connecticut. Many, many people knew that, and we're paying a very heavy price for it. When we come back, Joe has a look at our forecast. Stay with us. Quality, excitement, it's all happening right now with Hyundai. We just passed oil and JD powers. It's incredible. News View Weather, brought to you by Roger Jobs Porsche, 2200 Iowa Street, Bellingham. It's 7-Eleven. Joe's here with the weather. Joe, we had a terrific weekend. It looks like more of the same for this week. Was it a little warm for you yesterday? No, I thought it felt pretty good. A little warm for me. A little, around the 80 mark, you don't like it around the 80 mark. I was in the lower Fraser Valley yesterday and it was 90 there. 90, now that's toasty. That's toasty. Hey, let's go outside and take a look at the North Sound Alarm Weather Cam. And there is your city, the beautiful city of Bellingham, waking up on a Monday morning. It's Back to Work Monday. And who likes to hear that? Well, let's take a look at the forecast for today. Not too bad, sunshine and 75. That's about the optimum temperature, I think. A few passing clouds today and the sun came up at 6-11. These are getting a little bit shorter. Starting to get some dew in the morning, so that means fall can't be too far away. Going to cloud up tonight. The onshore flow will kick in. 55 will be the low increase in clouds, probably after 8 o'clock tonight. And then tomorrow, going to wake up to some clouds in the morning and then increasing sunshine in the afternoon. We'll turn into partly cloudy skies. 73, maybe 75 in some areas tomorrow. So not too bad. Up in the mountains, partly cloudy. But watch out for those thunderstorms today. If you're heading up to do a little hiking today or maybe heading up to Artist Point, could see some lightning, thunder and lightning. 79 was a high yesterday in Bellingham. 52 was a low and the average is 73 and 50. So we were just a little bit above average. And 85 was the high back in the mid-60s. I do not remember that, but I was around the onshore flow today and tonight. But for the most part, high pressure still in control. Let's take a look at the Pacific Ocean and you can see that the systems are keeping well away from us. And that will be the case for the next several days. Just a little bit of an onshore flow bringing that marine layer in and then it burns off, you know, about noon time. Anybody that's been around here any length of time knows that. Tuesday and Wednesday we're going to have a little bit more of that breaking into sunshine. And then warming temperatures into Thursday and Friday. Now if you really like the heat and you want to get into the desert heat, 99 in Walla Walla today, 95 in Spokane, 100 in Yakima, 98 in Wenatchee today. Lower Puget Sound will be a little warmer, 85 in Olympia, 83 in Seattle. And around here, a very pleasant 75 time. The number of homeless people living in Whatcom County is on the rise. Many of them are families with children. News View's Joe Bates caught up with the director of Bellingham's Lighthouse Mission at the Northwest Washington Fair. He has some tips on giving help to the homeless. When you give to help local nonprofits to meet the needs of the community, you want to make sure it goes to that need. Helping hands of Fairfield, California is collecting money. But it's not going to meet the needs stated. I had an individual approach me recently asking for a donation for the homeless. And after a few questions, they weren't providing any services. So I felt that that was wrong and I did call the local police and they're aware of this. According to the Lighthouse Mission staff, helping hands was asked to leave Bellis Fair Mall where they were soliciting. Puginski says when others are collecting money that isn't going to the local needs, it hurts the groups that are meeting those needs. The caregivers should be aware of where the money is going. The Lighthouse Mission does no telemarketing. And if someone is doing something for the Lighthouse Mission, they'll have a raised seal identification. So you'll be able to verify their ID. But we do no telemarketing and we do no door-to-door. Now once in a while a youth group or something will be raising money for the mission and we appreciate that. But we'll be able to verify the identity. Last year if you take all of our donations, cash and in-kind, we were probably around 12 percent on a dollar going to fundraising and administrative costs, which is very good. The Better Business Bureau's cutoff is 55-45. We were 88-12. For NewsView, I'm Joe Bates. Now let's get the latest in real estate information from Mike Kent. If you had a quarter million dollars to put in the stock market, would you make your investment on your own or would you hire a financial advisor to guide you? Well, with the average home now selling far above a quarter million dollars, it only makes sense that you would hire a professional realtor to help you make the smart financial decisions. The realtor you select should be very familiar with the area where you live and ideally with the very neighborhood you're looking to buy in. The great news is that as a buyer, you'll get the expertise, experience, and counsel of a realtor at absolutely no cost. In the real estate business, the sellers of a home actually pay the tab for both the agent who markets the house and the agent who sells the house. This is known as the Listing Office Commission and Selling Office Commission. Ask a financial advisor or stock broker to work for free, and chances are you won't get too far. Increasingly, buyer's agents are asking clients to sign a buyer's brokerage agreement, which contractually obligates the buyer to stick with them and obligates the agent to perform to his or her best ability for the buyer. A recent trend for some limited service brokerages is to set a lower selling fee that covers only the listing side commission with no provision to pay a buyer's agent. The obvious downfall of this practice is that the incentive for a realtor to sell your home is diminished since they don't know whether or not they'll get paid. If you'd like more information on Whatcom County real estate, contact Mike at MikeKent.com. Your home is your biggest investment, so you want a title insurer with the knowledge and the strength to defend that investment. That's why you should choose Chicago Title Insurance Company. Well, what a difference a week makes. Last night at Indy, Seattle put up some points against the Colts, but Indy's first team made it look easy in the first quarter. Peyton Manning right on target to Reggie Wayne, 30 yards and a touchdown, and the Colts go up 7-0. The Seahawks took advantage of Indy's second team, though. Seattle's Julian Peterson hits quarterback Jim Sorge, and the Seahawks' Mike Green will never have an easier touchdown than that one. Fourth quarter now, and Seattle's Larry Weaver fumbling near the goal line, but there's Chris Spencer recovering the football for Seattle, and the Seahawks win at Indianapolis 30-17. Would the Mariner woes end in Anaheim? Seattle's Richie Sexson with a two-run homer in the fourth as the Mariners go up in the game 2-0, but back come the Angels in the eighth. Garrett Anderson singles off J.J. Putz. The knock ties the score at two runs apiece, and it's daytied until the bottom of the ninth, and the Angels put this one away. Sean Figgins at the plate, and Putz gives up the RBI single to Figgins. Mariners lose 3-2. Seattle has now lost 11 straight games. It's an understatement, but these are bad times for the Seattle Mariners. And in case you missed it over the weekend, the Mariners traded Jamie Moyer to the Phillies for two minor leaguers. Well, you should, and you will, after you see what's coming up on Money Talks. This fall on Stone Undercover... No one will know who you work for. There's a guy named Tom Stone. He's an ex-cop. He's in jail. I can get you out. Are you interested or not? No, I don't want to see the kid. You work for me. This is Tom Stone. He's doing some undercover work. What do they want from you? They want me to cast the bad guys. Well, it's going to come back in you, port-ball. Keep your ears open for me. Just do your job. I'm going back to jail or what? Not yet. Stone Undercover, weekends this fall on KVOS. It is 722. This is the time of year when millions of Americans are flying to and from vacation destinations or heading off to a new college semester. And you are very likely to encounter the worst of the air, delays and overbookings. Our Money Reporter, Stacy Johnson, shows you how to claim your rights in a bad situation. If you travel often, you've been there, delayed, stuck, angry, and unsure exactly what, if anything, you're owed for your trouble. I think they can, you know, do what they want, kind of want from management here. I don't know. Brian Keno was one of dozens of passengers stranded overnight by mechanical issues on a US air flight. He and his family were trapped at their home base. But since they were dropped off and the flight wasn't canceled until midnight, getting back home was his problem. We get home late at night, had to take a Lincoln Town car, it was 50 bucks just to go five miles because we had so much luggage with the baby. So we'll see if they reimburse us for that. They said, we'll hold your receipts, but, you know, I'm not too hopeful. But a traveler should approach the counter armed with more than hope. They should know their airline's cancellation policies before they arrive at the airport. Because once you arrive, they may be hard to find. They're not going to tell you about them. They're not going to volunteer the information. That may or may not be true, but the Department of Transportation will tell you what they are. Or at least they'll hook you up to the airline's policies. And it only takes a few seconds to get there, look them up, and print them out. As for Brian, page 16 of USAIR's policies do state that if you're stranded at home, they are not obligated to do a thing for you. But that doesn't mean it can't happen. The lady kept looking up at the camera there and so you know why, we got a positive result through the camera, I think. Bottom line, understanding the policies and the procedures of the airline you're flying is crucial if you do find yourself in a jam. After all, you certainly don't want to have to take a camera crew just to get what you want. For Money Talks, I'm Stacy Johnson. Ahead on News View, another Northwest Washington Fair is over. We take a look at this year's attendance in Linden. I hate that. I always hated that when I was a kid. So did I. Who didn't? Who didn't? Well, let's go down to the surface and take a look at the regional temperatures. Right now, 56 in Ferndale, 61 out in Hope, 57 in downtown Vancouver, 48 in Port Angeles, and the capital city of Victoria has 54 right now. 56 in Bellingham, 54 in Burlington, and 55 in beautiful Friday Harbor. And that's going to be the case for the next couple of days. Mild temperatures. Here's a look at the satellite pictures. You can see that from the southwest there, there's a kind of a marine layer moving in. Well, that's going to be the story for the next few days. That marine layer will move in during the night and hang around in the morning tomorrow and Wednesday, then breaking into sunshine and pretty mild temperatures through your work week. Now let's take a look at local and regional headlines. Similar layoffs have occurred across Canada because sales dropped significantly after the ban on liquids and gels following the recent alleged terrorist plot in Great Britain. Now let's take a look at our top national stories with Barbara Hall. John Carr has arrived in Los Angeles from Thailand. He won the PGA Championship Sunday marking his 12th career major. Only Jack Nicklaus has more majors with 18. For Headlines, I'm Barbara Hall. The Northwest Washington Fair for 2006 is history, and it will go down as a record fair. Fair manager Jim Barron has just completed his third fair as manager. Attendance was up. You know, it seems like every day was better than the previous day, and we've set some attendance records this year, so we're really happy. Last year, with a little bit of rain, attendance was just short of 200,000. This year, attendance will be well over that mark. You just can't discount the weather. I mean, to have the gorgeous weather that we had all week, it was just perfect. And secondly, we had a great entertainment lineup, but you know, the entertainment is important, but we still only, our grandstand holds 4,000 people. And when 34,000 people come to the fair, there's a lot of people that aren't coming for entertainment, too. Surveys say there's one thing above all others that draws people to the fair. The number one thing is the animals. So you've got the beef exhibits, you've got the dairy exhibits, you've got the chicken, the poultry, the lawn. And people love to see the animals. So some of that doesn't change, but the animals are new. The exhibitors are different, and so that's a big thing that people come back for every year. Barron is quick to give credit to the fair staff. We have six year-round fair employees, and the number of fair employees swells to 300 the week of the fair. And our staff is just phenomenal because they go from, you know, six of us just working year-round, and all of a sudden we have to supervise 300 people to get all of the work done. And just a tremendous staff. One of the little-known parts of the fair is the 4-H exhibits. And inside the 4-H barn is a 4-H kitchen where members plan, cook, and serve meals throughout fair week. The kids are judged on a variety of aspects. Friday, I became an unofficial 4-H judge, along with Craig Mayberry, just in time for breakfast. For NewsView, I'm Joe Bates. The man accused of killing young John Benet Ramsey almost 10 years ago is now in Los Angeles. Sumidass has the latest on John Mark Carr from Boulder, Colorado. With immigration and customs enforcement agents at his side, murder suspect John Mark Carr made the 15-hour journey from Bangkok to Los Angeles Sunday aboard a Thai Airways jet. Inevitably, it will be going through your mind that there is an accused murderer in the same cabin, in the same, just a few seats away from you. At the request of the airline, Carr was not handcuffed, although federal agents escorted him to the restroom, and Carr was not allowed to close the door. Now in the custody of the Los Angeles Police Department, Carr was flown by helicopter from the airport to a correctional facility in downtown L.A. Further details of Carr's life in Bangkok have surfaced. Carr's hotel bill reveals calls made to a medical clinic catering in cosmetic surgery, including sex change operations. When we come back, Joe looks at today's weather forecast. That's next on News View. In a minimum payment, $87 is interest. It's been that way for three months now. Let's go downtown Bellingham and take a look at the Leopold Hotel. It's a retirement home there in downtown Bellingham. And the folks there are just, well, I don't know, retired people. They probably don't wake up this early. But maybe some of them are getting up. A lot of them watch News View. And there is a beautiful picture of Bellingham as we wake up in the South Coast Mountains. Let's take a look at the forecast for today. And it's going to be very nice today. Sunshine, a few passing clouds at times. And look at the temperature. This is actually my favorite temperature, 73. But 75 is OK. I don't like that 93. When it gets up in the 90s, it's too much for most of us. Clear tonight, 55. We'll have increasing clouds overnight tonight. Probably sometime after sunset because that marine layer will start to push in an onshore flow. And we'll have some clouds tomorrow. It'll be the marine clouds pushing in. And then they'll burn off to becoming partly cloudy tomorrow, 73 to probably 75 tomorrow. Up in the mountains, if you're heading up to the mountains to do some hiking, watch out for thunderstorms today. 75 at Mount Baker today and partly cloudy, but increasing chance of thunderstorms later on. 79 was the high yesterday, and the average is 73 and 50. So we are a little bit above average for this time of year. Let's take a look at the satellite pictures. And the onshore flow moving from the southwest into Puget Sound probably won't make it up here. But will tomorrow and Wednesday. We'll see a little cloudiness in the morning. Here's a look at the Pacific Ocean. You can see most of the clouds away from us. That means high pressure is still in control. Just a little bit of onshore flow will make us cloudy Tuesday and Wednesday. But look at the temperatures in the mid 70s and plenty of sunshine through Friday. And that is going to hold through the weekend. If you say, man, I wonder where the hot weather is. Well, here it is. 95 in Spokane today, 99 in Walla Walla, 98 Wenatchee, 100 in Yakima today. Down I-5, Portland will have 82, Vancouver will have 82, 85 in Olympia. And a little bit better around here, 75 and plenty of sunshine. Ty? The number of homeless people living in Whatcom County is increasing. Many of them are families with children. News use Joe Bates caught up with the director of Bellingham's lighthouse mission at the Northwest Washington Fair. He has some tips on giving to help the homeless. According to the lighthouse mission staff, helping hands was asked to leave Bellis-Fair Mall where they were soliciting. Kuginski says when others are collecting money that isn't going to the local needs, it hurts the groups that are meeting those needs. Givers should be aware of where the money is going. Kuginski says telemarketers are actually paid solicitors. Be very wary of groups calling you, soliciting on the behalf of others, because what they're getting paid is ridiculous, sometimes as much as 80 cents on a dollar. So you want to make sure your donation is going to services. That's what I believe. The lighthouse mission is very careful with the money you give. Last year if you take all of our donations, cash and in-kind, we were probably around 12 percent on a dollar going to fundraising and administrative costs, which is very good. The Better Business Bureau's cutoff is 55-45. We were 88-12. For News View, I'm Joe Bates. Let's take a look now at national politics. Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman was recently defeated in the state's primary. And he's going to run now as an independent. He's also getting support from the Republican Party. Elaine Kehano explains why. I don't see how the Middle East is getting better, how America is safer, how the world is safer as a result of isolating or attempting to isolate countries and not deal with them. And continuing disagreements on Iraq from another potential presidential hopeful, Republican Senator John McCain. All along, we have not had enough troops on the ground to control the situation. Many, many people knew that, and we're paying a very heavy price for it. But I want to emphasize, we cannot lose this. It will cause chaos in Iraq and in the region, and I still believe that we must prevail. Iraq continues to be the primary issue weighing down President Bush's approval ratings. But by linking Iraq to the larger war on terror, Mr. Bush is trying to make the case that success in Iraq is inextricably linked to security for Americans. Ilan Kihano, CNN, The White House. But the Seahawks took advantage of Indy's second team. Quarterback Jim Sorge is leveled by Julian Peterson. And the Seahawks, Mike Green, walks in for the touchdown off the pick later in the game. Fourth quarter, it's Seattle's Larry Weaver fumbling near the goal line, but there's Chris Spencer with the recovery. And the Seahawks get the victory on the road, 30-17. With the Mariner rows end in Anaheim. Richie Sexett in the fourth with a made-aboard. A two-run homer, and it's 2-0. Mariners, but back come the Angels in the eighth. Garrett Anderson singles off.
