I witness news is next tonight the Olympic flame is extinguished and the summer games are officially over a busy weekend for the Pima County bomb squad they're called out to a northwest side home again and some surprising remarks from Barry Goldwater on the presidential election the news is next it's 10 o'clock do you know where your children are live from KVOA TV for Tucson this is I witness news at 10. Good evening thanks for joining us tonight I'm Mark Johnson and I'm Savannah Guthrie we begin with the end of the Olympics and the big party in Atlanta that celebrated it 16 days and 271 events later it's over we know that song 80,000 turned out for closing ceremonies tonight three hours long and filled with music dance and Olympic moments this was one of them the Olympic torch being extinguished there also was a moment of silence for the two killed in last week's bombing in Olympic Park words from the head of the International Olympic Committee and also from the man who helped bring the games to Atlanta the people of this city and state have risen once again this time to embrace the Olympic spirit and in doing so have given the world a stirring performance Tucson's gold medal gymnast Carrie Strug was in the stands tonight and if you're wondering just how many gold medals US athletes brought home Danny Harden is gonna have that answer later on in sports before the Olympic torch was extinguished the games were marred by another senseless act of violence this time a shooting two off-guardie off-duty National Guardsmen were the victims one was killed the other wounded they were shot outside a restaurant in an Atlanta suburb police reports say the suspect jumped from behind some bushes and started firing the guardsmen had come to Atlanta from Indiana to help with security investigators are calling the shooting a random act of violence violence overnight here in Tucson a shooting early this morning has left a 16 year old girl in critical condition the shooting took place in a convenient store parking lot near the intersection of 6th Avenue and 17th Street police say a car with two people inside pulled up to a pickup truck with a camper shell and started firing nine people ranging in age from 13 to 21 were inside the camper shell violent crime is devastating for the families of the victims but not only because of the emotional toll many also face unexpected expenses but some local organizations want you to know there is help we spoke to them at Children's Memorial Park today a park dedicated to kids killed by violence they say crime victims can turn to several groups such as parents of murdered children the crime victim Assistance League and the Pima County Attorney's Office victim compensation program it's a terrible emotional devastation and we can't do much to ease that as much as we try but we can recognize and help ease the financial devastation that is caused if you want more information about services or if you want to help you can call Pima County's crime victim compensation program the number on your screen 740 5535 for the second straight day the Pima County bomb squad spent the day at the trailer of a northwest side man a man who blew off his own hand exploding a homemade pipe bomb last night the bomb squad safely detonated explosive materials taken from Michael Marsden's trailer authorities went back there today and found another bomb they had to detonate as well as more explosive chemicals neighbors say they are surprised by what's going on now we never heard no loud noises we could hear accidents on River or River and Oracle but we've never heard no loud noises over there Marsden remains hospitalized and stable condition tonight no word yet on whether he'll be charged with any crime a horrifying scene at Apache Lake this afternoon near Phoenix the driver of an RV plunged to his death when he lost control of the vehicle off State Route 88 you can see some of the debris a trail of it behind the RV as it slid down the cliff police say when the vehicle hit the water it actually split in half divers had to be called in to retrieve the man's body from the wreckage no word yet if alcohol was involved investigators in New York have retrieved what they're calling a critical piece of TWA flight 800 a portion of the cockpit was pulled from the water today it's been described as an unrecognizable mass of spaghetti like wires and components authorities are hoping the peace will help solve the mystery of last month's crash meanwhile divers continue to recover victims of the crash from the waters off Long Island so far 194 bodies have been recovered all but two have been identified back here in Arizona some local residents are celebrating a grand opening west of Tucson it's a new home for the three points resources center and food bank dozens of people celebrated the opening with music and a barbecue the center provides several services like counseling for families assistance with applications for government benefits and a community bank for food and clothing no kids should go hungry and our logo from day one has been we're proud to be your neighbor and glad when we can help and the satisfaction is at the end of the day the three points resource center is a not-for-profit organization that depends heavily on volunteers and donations for the past two weeks we've brought you inside Atlanta but how about inside Phoenix believe it or not there is support to bring the summer games to Phoenix the Maricopa County Sports Commission says the city already has about 95% of the facilities it needs to host the Olympics Phoenix does lack a transportation system able to carry all of that heavy traffic supporters believe the city could see the games as soon as the year 2008 in 1980 the Olympics were in Moscow and so was a young runner from Nigeria she won the bronze medal in the four by hundred relay now Elizabeth Muska who is in Arizona and putting her Olympic training to good use she coaches kids in the state juvenile detention system she says the rules of sports are good lessons for life team work okay they have to be good team players I have a monest they have to be honest when they play we have to play by the rules they have to work hard okay you don't have to win but just work hard and make sure you give it your best good advice Elizabeth is still winning medals by the way she won all these just this year at competitions around the state she can still run very fast you see all those I know she's going crazy you know the competition Atlanta really isn't over yet not quite yet in two weeks and other Olympics will be taking place the Paralympics for athletes with artificial or prosthetic limbs one of them trains right here in Tucson reporter Mike Zintek and photographer Angela Beardo bring us the inspiring story of Kurt Collier from the moment I found out I was going to be an amputee I was not I was determined not to allow it to limit my life and it hasn't the words of a true Olympian but Kurt Collier's workout is different than that of most athletes in Atlanta before he hits the Pima Community College track he has to put on his running leg a prosthetic limb at the Paralympics he'll be going for gold in the pentathlon they draw the parallel to the decathletes being the world's greatest athlete and I thought if I wanted to be the world's greatest amputee athlete and it would be the pentathlon that I'd want to compete in Kurt Collier and physical fitness have gone together for years Collier was a triathlete before the accident six years ago he was on a bicycle training ride in Virginia when he was hit by a car that never stopped when I was in shock I tried to get back on my bike to finish the ride and it was at that time that I induced quite a bit of an infection into the leg Collier could have had his leg fused at the ankle ironically that would have prevented him from running amputation wouldn't have that's why Collier opted for it the 100 meter dash is one of the five pentathlon events Collier's been timed in 12.21 seconds now you're you're compressing the heel and and that looks that looks much better Collier excels off the track as well he works with NovaCare in Tucson solving problems others have with their prosthetic limbs if it doesn't feel right when the person moves it Collier does a little tinkering until the limb works just like it should the skills that it takes to be a successful amputee they don't come overnight they take some time some patience and some perseverance perseverance is something Kurt Collier has plenty of nothing can stand in the way of his love for athletics not even an amputation and if all goes well the gold will be his I think society's view of amputation is that it's really traumatic and life-ending but as far as being able to turn to your previous lifestyle your lifestyle doesn't end with the loss of your limb Mike Zentech TV for eyewitness news that man should just about spire anybody Collier will be competing in two other events as well the discus and the four by hundred relay we wish him the best of luck so many good no kidding it's time for our first break and when we come back your vote 1996 before you cast your ballot you'll no doubt see plenty of public opinion polls coming up next we'll tell you what the southern Arizona public is are saying hey enough is enough they're actually trying to keep travelers away it's all ahead Monday morning on eyewitness news daybreak Janice that well with the Olympic races over the election races can officially begin and eyewitness news is already off the blocks we joined forces with the Arizona Daily Star and commissioned a poll to give us a head start Patty Weiss explains for years news organizations have used public opinion polling to gauge who's ahead in a campaign our polling though is different we were using surveys like this to search for issues what's important to the people of southern Arizona and then we intend to use those issues to shape our campaign coverage it actually puts the media reporters like yourself in the same position as a campaign itself we used Margaret Kensky and her polling group Arizona opinion to help us identify the major concerns of the community as a whole and the deeply held concerns of smaller groups too this is the starting point where the public is right before they begin to get hit hard by campaign mailing and by you folks covering the campaigns so here's what we got when we talked with 350 Pima County voters from 18 years old to age 93 we covered national issues like immigration and health care and we asked questions about the problems facing Pima County the answers are interesting and enlightening this woman thought juvenile crime was the most important issue we got a lot of responses like that or about crime in general this man 51 years old he thought water was a very important issue we got a lot of people who thought that here's a general question that might help you understand the mood of local voters do you think things in Pima County are going in the right direction or have things gotten off on the wrong track overall nearly half said the wrong track but the older the voter the worse they saw it younger respondents were evenly split but over age 41 the negative response grew Republicans were more satisfied than Democrats but independents and other party voters saw things much worse Patty Weiss TV for eyewitness news we'll have more on the poll tomorrow on eyewitness news at six o'clock Patty shows us when some issues where men and women differ and a man who is no stranger to politics GOP patriarch Barry Goldwater is retracting a statement he made about President Clinton he now says it was a joke Goldwater was in Tucson yesterday for a forum and spoke freely and positively about Bill Clinton's job performance the former Arizona senator went on to say he would vote for Bob Dole only if he was the only candidate running for the presidency but now he says he didn't mean that all right weather is next Pamela's going to join us with your work week forecast day with with two new stores in office at 621 cats for your tickets today it's the third annual FHP shootout the Los Angeles Lakers and the Phoenix Suns brought to you by KVO ATV for and FHP health care high temperature in Tucson today 97 degrees morning low was 76 3.3 inches of rain so far this year we haven't added to that in the last couple days usually we beat about five and a half inches this time of year Sun expected to come up tomorrow at 542 it should set tomorrow night at 718 we have a few tornado watches in effect tonight in parts of Nebraska and north of that a lot of this activity is going to be moving over into Iowa and Wisconsin and we've already seen one or two tornadoes pop up on the radar that danger will continue over the next 24 hours as the system continues to move off to the east also severe thunderstorm watch in effect check out this moisture right here that's the moisture the monsoonal moisture that we should be seeing but because our wind flow is pushing that off to the east Texas is getting it instead high temperature in the nation today was 107 degrees in Cotulla Texas and the cold spot today was 31 degrees in Jackson Wyoming the cloud cover over Arizona gives us a better illustration of how our moisture is being pushed off to the east wind flow just blowing it out of here because of a low pressure system that's situated in the Rockies and really we're seeing nothing but clear skies in Arizona that will be our story for the next couple of days basically a return to sunshine and a break in the monsoon activity the good news is though we will see it return most likely by about Wednesday Thursday Friday we'll start seeing that chance of getting some storms in the late afternoon or the evening especially over the mountain areas normal low for us overnight for this time of year is 73 degrees normal high is 98 the record for us 109 which we set on this date in 1994 the forecast for Tucson for tonight calls for clear skies with an overnight low around 74 degrees for tomorrow mostly sunny skies winds out of the west northwest at about 5 to 15 and a high temperature of 98 degrees sunny for the next two days as I mentioned wash the car quickly because by Wednesday Thursday and Friday those sprinkles will probably make a return now why should we wash the car it's gonna rain again well in case it's dirty from the last set which mine happens to be exactly because if you didn't wash it you'd never wash it exactly okay car tips thank you all right coming up in sports Kenny Lofton caught stealing again this time he's still in a home run yeah no breakup on the next AJ Monday at 4 on TV for you know I hail to the women of the 1996 Olympics Amy Van Dyken Gail Devers Carrie Strug and many many more so what a perfect way to end the games an incredible show by the greatest women's basketball squad of maybe all-time team USA they will take it on in the goal game a very scrappy Brazil team of these ladies are they aggressive or what the home team USA led by 11 at half and just blew it open in the second half Dawn Staley the pretty past at least a Leslie who finishes Lisa may be one of the best women's player in the world watch her go to the offensive glass not once that time will work and the foul Lisa had 29 big ones this team is a lot of fun to watch look at this showtime and the finish USA wins at 111 87 to win the gold the American team won each game by an average of 27 points it was total domination I think it's been very difficult but I don't think you achieve anything in life without being disciplined and you know like they say no pain no gain and I just say to all the little girls out there that want to be like me and my teammates just keep working hard I think it's the best game I've ever played the best moment of my life I'm excited I'm glad that we want to go metal and we're Olympians and we get to leave Atlanta's gold medalist as all the other women have all right the US boxing team had won at least one gold medal in every Olympics since 1948 but it looked like they'd get shut out this year a very disappointing showing so far and today our last hope was David Reed but unfortunately he was fighting a Cuban see Cuban is the dominant squad again in this 156 pound final Alfredo Duvergal was killing Reed here Reed suffers the standing eight count but then after this check it out Duvergal led 16 to 6 in the final round then all of a sudden Oh look out the big right hand by Reed and the Cuban goes down and folks that's it he is counted out one of the greatest comebacks in Olympic boxing history mr. David Reed wins the gold in dramatic fashion for team USA it's hard to knock somebody out and I know this guy was up and he's a good boxer and uh I knew that if I hit him with my right hand that he was gonna go down but I didn't know that it was going to you know it was going to come like that the men's volleyball final was a thriller between the Netherlands and Italy the Netherlands had finished second in the 1992 Olympics the 94 World Championships and the 95 World Cup finally they break through today and win the gold taking the final of five games 1715 meanwhile 122 runners took off this morning in the men's marathon they began in the Olympic Stadium cruised around the streets of Atlanta before returning to the stadium in the closest marathon finish in Olympic history South Africans Josiah Tugwani won in a time of two hours 12 minutes and 36 seconds look at the medal count you know this is not what the Olympics is all about counting up medals but since team USA won the most let's count them up 44 gold medals 32 silver 25 bronze for a total of 101 way to go team USA well just five years ago Kenny Lofton was playing for the Tucson Toros but honestly you know what he really didn't know what he was doing out there that's how good of an athlete Kenny is he was just raw talent and very fast now he's one of the most exciting and best players in all of Major League Baseball there's Kenny today his Indians taking on the Orioles drive deep the center field Kenny gets on his horse and then he goes jumping that was supposed to be a home run but Kenny goes way up to Rob BJ Sirhof of a home run that's worth another look can little Kenny get up or what that is just beautiful Kenny was also doing it at the plate today he turns on it the little guy gets his ninth home run of the season Kenny also had two stolen bases he has 53 on the season he's doing it all the Indians bombed the Orioles by the final of 14 to 2 we move on to the National League Houston taking on the Giants former Tucson Toro pitcher Billy Wagner boy did he have it coming down the stretch bottom of the ninth or top of the ninth strikes out Barry Bonds and Matt Williams to end the game that on six pitches the Astros beat the Giants by the final of seven to six meanwhile finally in golf today the du Maillet classic Laura Davies your winner and also she that was her fourth major title for the 30 year old 32 year old English star she also has a US Open title and a couple of LPGA championships also on the PGA side wouldn't you really rather have a Buick Open title mr. Justin Leonard he finally breaks through this young kid gets its first PGA title it's a seventh first time winner on the PGA Tour this season so finally ladies and gentlemen the Olympics are over but it was a fun ride wasn't it and we got the most gold no kidding we did well gotta like that thanks Danny still to come forget about all those gold medals believe it or not the thing that really counts is what's on the cardboard that's right as long as it has the name Wheaties on it we're gonna tell you which Olympian made the box inside edition weekend specializes in hard-hitting investigation and compelling human interest features next on TV full we do where we go what happens after you take each other's hand mad about you tell her what men think when girls give in on the first date yeah we got this fall on TV full next inside edition these twin sisters have shared everything but the joy of sound Christina would always jump at every noise and Cassie wouldn't respond at all but now something has changed all that be there as one little girl here's for the very first time in this city cameras catch some stunning acts and they've become a video bestseller watch inside edition Monday at 630 on TV for while the weeks of suspense have come to a close no we're not talking about the Olympic competition but rather who will grace the Olympic Wheaties box the answer is not who but how many so check it out Tucson's own Carrie Strug together with the other six members of the gold medal winning women's gymnastics team but that's not all also decathlon champion Dan O'Brien former you have a wildcat Amy Van Dyken swimmer Tom Dolan and track star Michael Johnson now having all those people this different boxes is break from Wheaties tradition five boxes commemorating the Atlanta games each one the result of a great Olympic story and we have our great cave away story Dave Rush our longtime producer here on the weekends is leaving us to take a great job at ESPN we want to say goodbye congratulations Dave thank you we're gonna miss him he's been with us for a while here he's a man without a football team though he's from Cleveland they don't have a football team anymore Dave who you gonna root for I know but now he's that national ESPN have to root for he's big-time ESPN he's the big time so we're real proud of him and we want to wish him the best of luck and we'll see you next weekend okay this fall on TV for a nice young man what you saw on TV for eyewitness news this week the bullet grazed her left leg and then entered her right leg the flowers are in honor of the victims from the bombing on Saturday night I should say one more minute and both of those women would have died Houston Astros exhibition game against the Tucson Taurus Donald Tucker has been released it wasn't gang related it wasn't a random act their support for Jim Colby has not wavered why witness news on TV for because this is where the news comes first
