Coming up very soon, live from Wembley, MC Hammer. This stereo simulcast of the simple truth is made possible tonight with thanks to Telecom Yellow Pages. Hello, something scary happening. Tuesday 7.30 following neighbors, it's ghouls and ghosts on the census. Personally, I don't understand. We own you, let's see some blood. But who's scared? Hey Halloween. Then make way at 8 for Doogie Howser. Chill out man, guess who's coming to dinner? I hold them hostage in a convenience store. It's all happening as Doogie helps out an old friend. Well there you go. Tuesday, The Simpsons at 7.30 followed by Doogie Howser at 8 on Channel 10. It's Red Red Ready for You. It's Red Rooster's Bread and Butter Bonus. Barbecue chicken sandwich, low dairy fresh butter and a large Pepsi for only $9.90. So if you like bread and butter, chicken and Pepsi too, a bread and butter bonus is Red Red Ready for You. At only $9.90. Mouths are made for kissing, smiling, reminiscing. Mouths are made for coolings. Can't you feel it in your soul? Nothing's quite as cool and round as a cool mint. And you can't put a square mint in a round hole. Alan's Cool Mint. Delicious, luscious, chewy peppermint nougat. Nothing's quite so cool and round as a cool mint. Now also in a convenient roll pack. I think about you now and then. Ain't nothing you can quite as spell. So next time the night's getting long, give us a yell. Give us a yell. Give us a yell. Give us a yell. Give us a yell. Give us a yell. Give us a yell. Give us a yell. Give us a yell. Give us a yell. Give us a yell. Give us a yell. Give us a yell. Give us a yell. Euros. attering and Right now, there are hundreds of thousands of people dying and starving in the mountains of Northern Iraq. A huge part of saving lives is simply feeding these children and their parents. And that, Dale, and Brad, is a logistical nightmare. So, Australian... And what we're about to see is an illustration of two things. First, the horror of being trapped in those freezing mountains. And second, just how difficult the task really is. In the first week of April, President Bush relented. He sent American military cargo planes to drop food to Kurdish refugees marooned in the mountains on their way to safety in Turkey. They stopped the parachute drops after some refugees were killed and injured by heavy objects falling from the sky. Safer and better able to find refugees scattered all over the mountains are helicopters, the cargo carrying Chinooks in service in the NATO countries. This was a bread run. Nothing else, just bread, about to be carried on the wind like autumn leaves. We send this one out to all of you who believe that prayer can help change things and keep the peace. Because we know we've got to pray just to make it today. Let's do this all. Every day. And on my knees. Every night you know I pray. I said be brave. Oh yeah be brave. And say it. I said be brave. Oh yeah be brave. And say it. I just think that you can do whatever you want. I'm busing these rides making this money and I won't ever be back. Or if my people want my town or my land. And on my knees every night I'm still going to pray. I said be brave. Oh yeah be brave. And say it. I said be brave. Oh yeah be brave. And say it. Turn and turn and turn and turn and turn again. I took my rock and put these people in a happy end. I tried to drive and tried to drive them back away. But it's been happened to a day. And when I said be brave. Oh yeah be brave. And say it. I said be brave. Oh yeah be brave. And say it. Children die and also masks go missing back. Need that money, working that dope and spawning crack. Ten years old, stand outside, play look out. Dead and gone, and I'm in a jet, what's it all about? I said be brave. Oh yeah be brave. And say it. I said be brave. Oh yeah be brave. And say it. Be brave. I said be brave. Oh yeah be brave. And say it. I said be brave. Here, where the mountains have given some protection to the Kurds, the return journey has begun. The difficult paths down into Iraq are filling with people who have to pick up the threads of their life and start again. Today, more have been leaving the squalid refuges on the mountaintops and streaming south. Many are still weak, and they clutch all that they possess in their hands. Food, water, hygiene and medicine all present problems, and so does fear. As they reach the greener, lower slopes, thousands have stopped. They're unsure if their towns and villages are safe. They prefer to wait, and many are still recovering from weeks of grim existence in snow and mud. The people here say that they're happy to have survived. Even so, they face a very uncertain future. They want the outside world to know that they've been driven from their homes several times in living memory, and that each return has found them vulnerable again. Those who have ventured cautiously back to their homes are discovering that there's little left with which to start afresh. They took only a few essentials when they scrambled away, convulsed by panic, fearful of an army ordered to be vengeful, remembering that the threat of death from chemical weapons has for them been a reality. And then they're coming home to this, a catalogue of vandalism, everything looted or smashed. Each house systematically pillaged and wrecked. No water supply, no electricity, and possessions reduced to a heap of rotting garbage. The Kurds' flight north seemed a disaster, one that was entirely man-made. But their return is neither easy nor guaranteed hopeful. They have a saying, the Kurds' only friends are the mountains. So far, this has been all too true. Well, that's a reminder of why we're all here tonight. Coming up, the grand finale from Wembley Arena featuring Kristerberg, Lisa Stansfield, Alison Moyer, Snap, MC Hammer, and Tom Jones. A child is born to an ordinary home East or west, it ain't coming anymore But we all know Will my child survive to see the day? When will we be secure again? When will we see the simple truth? The only thing that's worth a damn The life of a child is more than a forest The life of a child is more than a forest The life of a child is more than religion The life of a child is only a hobby From eternity we must believe For the sake of humanity we must believe For the sake of humanity we must believe Thank you everybody for getting to the end tonight. Share the lives and loves of your favorite Melbourne neighbours. 7 o'clock weeknights on Channel 10. The 10 Eyewitness News, second edition. Brought to you by Mobile. This is the 10 Eyewitness News, second edition. Good evening, I'm Ron Wilson. The WA Inc Royal Commission had more allegations about Perth businessman Laurie Connell. It's claimed he received a multi-million dollar fee for advising the State Government on the purchase of a diamond mine. But the money wasn't paid by the Government, it was paid by the Bond Corporation. These documents are copies of secret memos that passed between Laurie Connell and former Deputy Premier the late Jack Walsh. They're dated the 22nd of September 1983, four days before Premier Burke suggested to Cabinet that it purchased Northern Mining and its 5% share of the Argyle Diamond project. They say that both Walsh and Connell were acting as consultants to the Government on the purchase. They also show that the five million dollar fee was to be paid by the vendor Alan Bond. If true, Connell would have been involved in a major conflict of interest. It's an interest that should have been known to Cabinet by either Connell or then Premier Brian Burke. The inquiry has been told that Connell had been present when Cabinet made its decision to buy the mine. The documents state that Connell took with him a bag of diamonds to the meeting. Attorney General Joe Berenson also gave his account of the meeting. He said if Connell was giving his services to us for free, he might be getting his fee from somewhere else, even the vendor. Mel Bryce, former Deputy Premier, also gave evidence. He said that in this matter he'd been pushed aside by the Premier. It was high profile, he said. The Premier took over the running of the issue. I was miffed. In further evidence, Bryce said that he did not attend the Cabinet meeting that had discussed the purchase. Tom Bennett, 10 Eyewitness News. Treasurer Paul Keating admitted today the recession is deeper than the Government intended, but he maintains the policies are in place to deal with record unemployment levels. A view not shared by industry Minister John Button. Record numbers out of work is not a development Treasurer Keating can wear politically, and today in Parliament he beat a retreat from the claim this is the recession Australia had to have. This recession is deeper than official policy would have had it been, would have had it be. Mr Keating warns the Opposition's call to cut Government spending even further would worsen the crisis. In the Senate, industry Minister John Button was also on the retreat from optimism, thanks to the Business Council survey on investment. Nonetheless, I don't in any way retreat from the fact that, over all irrespective of any Business Council survey, investment intentions are weak. It all means the job outlook will continue bleak. The Opposition calls for leadership and even tougher decisions. Whatever you do, if you keep on the track you're going now, you are damned. So you might as well break out and have the guts to make a decision and see if you can fix it. Both sides seem to agree holding a summit on jobs, like the tax summit in 1985, or the economic summit soon after the Hawke Government came to power back in 1983, is not a good idea. Mr Hawke is cool on calling a talkfest or giving short-term solutions credence, but he has agreed to give priority to jobs at the Premier's conference later this month. It's an historic court ruling and one that overturns a three-year ban on dredging. Scallop fishermen celebrated as the Supreme Court threw out the ban on dredging in Port Phillip Bay. I thank God that we still have a democratic system in this country. Thank you. Across the bay at Mornington, scallop fishermen were preparing their boats. It can bring everybody happy, at least the ones that know how to work. After being kept out of the bay for three years, many boat owners are close to financial ruin. Some fishermen had become so desperate they were ready to defy the ban and risk having their boats confiscated. But the ban has been supported by amateur fishermen who say scallop dredging causes irreparable damage to the bottom of the bay. Now a lot of people have said to me and their divers that after these dredges go through, it is just, there's nothing there, it's a desert. The government has promised to re-impose the ban. It's the reason that dragging great lumps of metal up and down the bottom of the bay doesn't do a whole lot of good for either the scallops or the bottom of the bay. But for now, scallop fishermen are preparing to legally dredge in Port Phillip Bay. Brian Shrouder, 10 Eyewitness News. Iraq claims 100 citizens have been murdered by Shiite Muslim rebels near the Iran-Iraq border. Although reporters have been shown the bodies, the identities of the victims have not been confirmed. We warn some scenes in this story may offend. It was not the normal government-sponsored trek to Iraqi cities to observe their recovery. Normally we travel long distances by car, choppers too expensive and still dangerous in the air. We would fly above the barren deserts of southern Iraq and the green marshes outside Basra. Then a drive to an isolated location on the Iran-Iraq border to witness the macabre aftermath of a mass execution only two weeks ago. Iraqi officials say Iranian troops crossed the border after they withdrew. When the Iranians left Basra, the Iraqi government says the Iranians captured many people and executed these 100. Only a few were soldiers. Following the seven-year war with Iran, in 1988, Iraq built huge bunkers for many miles near the common border in order to monitor Iranian troop movements. Following the Gulf War ceasefire, the government of Iraq claims only routine patrols existed near Basra. The Iranian people's Mujahideen is also claiming Iranians dash across the border, sometimes to attack them in the Iraqi-approved camps. Their plans are to someday overthrow forces loyal to the regime of the late Ayatollah Khomeini. There are some who dispute these victims were Iraqis. Personal belongings of an Iranian were found nearby and could not be explained away by officials. In all, 100 bodies awaited a memorial service and burial, the gravediggers nearby. Channel 10's receiver has forecast a bright and profitable future for the company despite the appointment of a liquidator. The Supreme Court moved today following an application by the New South Wales Rugby League to wind up the network. Channel 10 continued program production as normal tonight, saying the appointment of a liquidator was another step in the reconstruction of the company. Receiver James Miller emerged from the Supreme Court, still in control of the 10 network and with an optimistic view of its future. There will be no change to the programming. There will be no change to staffing and there will be no change to management. And it continues under my control until and until these stations are sold. Unbelievable Gaya smiths to the corner. Time. It was the New South Wales Rugby League which applied to wind up the company over debts totaling more than $2 million. The judge rejected an appeal by 10 to adjourn the case and he appointed Hugh Wiley as liquidator. The league's general manager said Rugby League would continue on 10 and the league was acting in its own interest. We've pursued our right to protect our members and protect the long term interests of the league. Channel 10 will continue under the day to day management of Chief Executive Gary Rice. It's expected the network will be sold within three months. It's a pity that when a network has as it had last night a 30 share and has frequently had very good results and will go on to have even better results. This sort of thing is happening. There will be no change. The management will stay under me and Gary Rice and there will be no other changes to the operations of 10 Sydney or the network at large. The broadcasting tribunal says tonight it's been kept informed of today's developments. Its lawyers are studying the judgment and an assurance by Channel 10 that its service will continue. Howard Saker, 10 Eyewitness News. Wine and spirit giant RA Brewing has become the world's biggest producer of hot water heaters. Business Review Weekly's Robert Gottliebsen explains how the company has used the recession to buy into the US market. When you think of SA Brewing the first product that comes to mind is Adelaide's West End Beer. In fact the company is the largest wine producer in Australia having acquired pinfolds at a cheap price when John Spalvans Adelaide Steamship Group needed someone who could write a check for about $350 million in a few days. But SA Brewing under Chief Executive Ross Wilson has become more than just a beer and wine group. In 1988 it purchased Reem Australia which made it Australia's largest water heater maker. The company so liked the business that it purchased a similar group in the US. But with only 10% of the US hot water heater market SA Brewing was too small. Today Ross Wilson announced that his company had purchased the Moreflow Group which gives it 30% of the US hot water heater market. The US is in recession so the price was right. Indeed SA Brewing is probably the largest mains pressure hot water group in the world. And on the subject of acquisitions CRA has lifted its bid for Colnaleid from $7.85 a share to $8.50. But Colnaleid Chief Tony Haraldson says it's still inadequate. Colnaleid shares rose to $8.60 that's 10 cents above the bid. However the company will be under pressure in the next week or so if the overall share market continues to decline. Today the all-ordinary index fell 1.6% in line with the decline on Wall Street at the weekend. BHP, CRA, Western Mining and Colesmire led the retreat. And while our stock market fell the Australian dollar had a sharp setback after recent gains to close at 78 US cents. All eyes will be on Wall Street tonight to see if further share price falls are ahead. This is Robert Gottliebsen. Melbourne police have continued their crackdown on illegal street racing. During the weekend they swooped on a track in the northern suburbs where 300 cars had gathered. This was the scene which greeted more than 100 police involved in Operation Flag. A special task force set up to crack down on illegal street racing. The target this time was the latest illegal venue, Yale Court, an 800 metre long dead end street in an industrial estate in Eppingham. After secretly watching and video recording previous meetings in Yale Court, Operation Flag swung into action at 10.30 last night. More than four hours later police had issued hundreds of tickets. EPA officers reported 58 breaches of exhaust emissions and noise levels and 38 vehicles were taken off the road. One was confiscated. Police say they're not spoiling sports, ruining a bit of high spirited harmless fun. They believe these meetings are dangerous. Where they do this it's only probably two or three metres from where people are standing five to eight deep and our concern was that a car would lose control and perhaps there'd be a double or triple or whatever fatal up there. Ripping up the road to prove one's manhood is not only a very dangerous thing to do, it's also a very expensive form of vandalism. Rain will penetrate the scarred and damaged road and it will cost thousands of dollars to reseal this hardly used street. Police know the illegal street racers won't go away but they say neither will they. Jim Brown, 10 Eyewitness News. A court in South Africa is expected to pass judgment later tonight on Winnie Mandela. Mrs Mandela has denied charges of kidnapping and intent to do grievous bodily harm. Meanwhile, leaders of the ANC will hold emergency talks about the murder of 25 supporters by Zulu members of the rival Inkata movement. The Shaq settlement is now almost deserted. Most of the survivors have fled, the latest refugees from the terror spreading through the townships. The fact that security forces were unable to stop hundreds of chief brutalisers in Kata supporters mounting this attack, despite a local nighttime curfew, and the widespread allegations that the attackers were actually brought here in police vehicles, has intensified ANC anger against the government. The police deny the allegations of their siding with Inkata against the ANC, but ANC hardliners are putting increasing pressure on Nelson Mandela to stop negotiating with President Leclerc in protest. The ANC leader is under particular strain as his wife Winnie Mandela faces judgment at the end of her trial today on kidnapping and assault charges. However, the outcome of this extraordinary trial, Winnie Mandela's involvement has damaged the family name and put additional pressure on Nelson Mandela. He insists that she is innocent, but he also called for a trial to give his wife the opportunity to clear herself. Presidents Bush and Gorbachev are expected to meet for a superpower summit within a few months. The two leaders discussed the proposed meeting in a weekend telephone conversation. Mr. Bush and Mr. Gorbachev spoke by phone for 45 minutes at the weekend. A summit was discussed, and afterwards the U.S. president seemed well pleased. But it was a good conversation, and we ironed out a few difficulties. The two presidents last met in Helsinki in September. They were supposed to meet again in February, but that was postponed because of the Gulf War. The Kremlin has been pushing hard for the summit, but the Americans have been reluctant because of lack of progress on arms treaties. But Sergey Grigoriev, Mr. Gorbachev's spokesman, interviewed on American television, predicted there would be a summit. I guess in summer we will definitely have a summit between the two presidents, he said. But in Washington, the Senate's senior Democrat said a summit should be dependent on arms control progress. That's the test. Will something be accomplished other than show business for both sides? If the summit happens, Moscow should be the venue the two men have already met in Washington. But London is being mentioned as an alternative, possibly around the time of a major economic summit there in July. Storms have killed another 52 people in Bangladesh and caused further disruption to the relief effort. The cyclone two weeks ago has put 8 million people at risk of starvation and disease. Cholera appeared in the village of Chunpura at the end of last week. Since then, scores of people have died. The only doctor in the area believes that the lives of tens of thousands of others are in danger. The only surprise is that cholera has taken so long to affect the people here. There's no sanitation of any kind, and the rotting carcasses of animals and the corpses of humans killed in the cyclone lie in the fields. They're food for the dogs. The people eat rice they've taken from the contaminated fields. They wash it in a pond they use as a latrine. The wreckage left by the cyclone hasn't been cleared. Under it are decomposing bodies. So many, the villagers say, that they can't be counted. They've lost interest in burying any more of them. People who are already weak from lack of food and clean water die in hours from cholera. The people in Chunpura know they should move away from their deadly environment, but say they have nowhere else to go. Especially chartered jumbo jet loaded with emergency supplies left Sydney today for Bangladesh. Medical supplies, blankets and high protein biscuits were among the 90 ton cargo destined to help cyclone victims in the devastated lowlands of Bangladesh. Here Australia spent over $700,000 on the flight, part of the $5 million already committed to relief in the area. Tonight's Red Cross concert for the Kurdish refugees has so far raised $3 million in Britain. And organisers are confident they'll reach the $20 million mark. When will we live in peace again? It was the unspeakable misery of these Kurdish refugees in faraway Iraq that prompted these people in London to plan and prepare for the massive worldwide concert. Promoters and performers and satellite technology, even royalty, combined to create a fundraiser of the kind not seen since live aid. And like anybody with any humanity and compassion I felt I had to respond. A child is born in the desert sun. The Kurds may be deserving beneficiaries, but there were questions about the sorry plight of the famine blighted Ethiopians and the storm ravaged people of Bangladesh. Weren't they just as deserving a share of this musical gold mine? As long as everybody gives and we get over that $10 million mark, it will actually help the others. The audience here in London was joined by television to some 500 million others in three dozen countries. And performers like InXS at the other side of the world in Melbourne. The concert hopes to raise some $25 million for the Kurds. Ken Burslem, 10 Eyewitness News. Still to come, all the weather details, then a new lease of life for a rare old car. Englishman Albert Gerling is well known as the inventor of various parts for motor vehicles. Well, Mr Gerling also had a hand in designing cars, and many years later, only one remains. It's in Queensland. The darkness behind the door hides its form. A car that first saw the light of day in England 80 years ago. It was engineered by Albert Gerling, the man who invented the drum brake, the disc brake, and the Venetian blind too. A three-wheeler utility with a box back for delivering goods on weekdays, removable on weekends. A car designed for cobbled streets, the only one still existing. Today it's in the hands of Meriburra's Ron Stevenson. He found the wreckage at a Melbourne house two decades ago. While I was under this fellow's house searching amongst his rusty junk, I noticed this ancient engine. It was enough to realise we had a car, but we had no idea what it was. Eventually, Albert Gerling, then in his 90s, identified his work by telephone from London. He said, I've always wished that one of the old Gerlings had survived, and he says, as yours is certainly the only one that's come to existence. And he said, and I think it'll be on the other side of the world. Now Gerling's great-grandson has crossed the globe to study the car. He wants to make a replica. Most of the other Gerlings built were melted down for scrap during Britain's war effort. This one will end up in a museum, tribute to a man who helped to revolutionise the transport industry in 1911.
