. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . have declared a burn ban. Channel 8's Kimberly Holsey kicks off our team coverage with more on what's expected of residents here in Tulsa. Kristen and Latoya, the commissioners called an emergency meeting this afternoon to address the concerns for the county. All the fire chiefs throughout the county, worse than a survey yesterday, to tell their needs for their area. All but one supported this burn ban. So now you can't burn outdoors so it sparks, don't do it. This is in effect until July 16th and at that point they will go by a week to week basis to get all the concerns for the area. I think it's very important that we examine this on a timely basis. First of all, you're restricting rights in the community and that's very serious so we need to be very sensitive to the actions we're taking here so bringing this back to the commissioners in about 10 days from now and then visiting this weekly I think is the way to do it. We don't want to over implement this. We want to do it just as we need to and as soon as we don't need to, we need to drop this and we will. Now there is a little bit of good news if you do have an electric or propane grill you are allowed to use those on concrete surfaces and if you have a charcoal grill you are asked to not use that one at all. In downtown Tulsa, Kimberly Holsey, Tulsa's Channel 8. Alright some important information there. Firefighters are being pushed to the limits this afternoon. They're chasing one grass fire after another. Channel 8's Yvonne Lewis reports from Creek County where the flames first popped up earlier this week and a burn ban soon followed. The problems with these grass fires is that they can come up at any time. As you can see, this one is located close to a road but right across the street it's close to homes and property. Dry conditions and a lack of rain have increased the threat of danger to all of us. You might recall this fire in Osage County on Wednesday but as Creek County knows, fire knows no boundaries and one day after issuing a burn ban, calls about grilling are probably coming in number one. The answer is yes to grilling but only under certain conditions. Approved grills, propane, cookers, char-colors on a flat, hard surface like cement, gravel or asphalt, away from any dry brush or tinder and away from their homes. Deputies are actively enforcing the ban. The burn ban last year, you know, there were a lot of fires that caused a lot of house fires and things like that so we do take that seriously. I'm told it's a $500 fine if a citation is issued for a burn ban violation but if Oklahoma's governor also institutes a burn ban for the county, that cost could go up to $1,000. Yvonne Lewis, Tulsa's Channel 8. Creek County's burn ban remains in effect until August 4th. Well, night two for the war of fire works and it continues on the city's north side. This time the teenage suspects took aim at a police officer and a TV news crew. The teenagers started several fires Fourth of July using Roman candles. Then last night around 1030 investigators were back at the scene when the kids retaliated. One officer was hit in the back and a reporter got hit in the head. Neither was seriously hurt though. No arrests have been made. Today the city's fire department is working to help people stay hydrated and keep cool. Yesterday paramedics treated five people for heat related illnesses but most of the patients were working outdoors. So to help people without air conditioning, EMSA has set up several cooling stations around town. They include the Salvation Army Center of Hope, Tulsa County Social Services, the Dennis R. Neal Equality Center and senior nutrition sites throughout Tulsa. This is the closest we can to the kids so that they can go to their home, their home, their home-court, their home-court association, a neighbor they can go to. These are the backup plan for what most of us have in our day to day lives. And to see a list of the cooling stations again just go to our website KT wealth dot com. Well most of us stay dry. You've heard about the problems but a few folks actually got a little bit of rain and moved into the Florida area. Most of us are just out of Arkansas but once they move into Oklahoma they're falling apart. In fact this is a case in point. You can see a little bit of rain and moved into LaFleur County headed towards Poto and Hevener pretty much fizzling out as it's doing so but still more right behind it. So some folks may get wet tonight. The rest of us just hot. 101 in Tulsa. We hit 102 today. Okmulgee at 104. We'll see you at midnight and 77 tomorrow morning. But we do have some big changes headed our way. I'll have the latest on those changes coming up. Ok thank you Frank. Well yet again another Oklahoma man has drowned on local waterways. Tulsa police need your help tracking down a crook who broke into a North Tulsa drugstore. On June 25th the man broke the front glass door to the Med-X drugstore located at 5324 North Peoria. For years it's been a staple for people near 31st and Harvard and the new vacancy will create problems for the residents there. Channel 8's Kim Jackson explains the issue and possible solutions. This homeland store is closing. In fact everything in the store is on sale but no one seems to be celebrating that. Everyone around here seems to be sad this store is going away. The customers in homeland realize this could be their last trip into the store. 82 year old Billy Morrow has come here several years not just for groceries but to get food for his soul. Well they've always had good prices and I like the people the managers really nice and they've got one of the best checkers and Tulsa. Here she is Laurie Smith. Sweet, sweet. He always waits in my line no matter how long it is but I've been doing, I've been in retail grocery for 24 years total. And I am going to miss all these customers. She's worried about the customers who live close by, who walk and those who like Billy manage to drive the short distance. Many of them are now faced with a challenge of finding a new store. Within this area there are a lot of seniors that walk to this store and so now that the store is not going to be here how are they going to access their grocery stores and their basic needs if they don't drive. That's why these experts are helping them find bus routes or transportation to other stores. But another store is not what they want. I lost my parents when I was really young. So I've looked at a lot of these people as my parents or grandparents. So it is sad. Nothing kept customers like Billy Morrow away. He stopped by one last time and today is his birthday. Homeland will close for good on Sunday. In Midtown, Kim Jackson, Tulsa's Channel 8. Field Forum. Well the building is up for lease. The management company says it has a few opportunities in mind, but nothing is definite at this point. Hundreds of new jobs could be coming to Stillwater. An event is planned Monday to announce the sale of that city's former Mercruiser manufacturing plant. It's being reported that a Belgian aerospace company is the new owner. ASCO makes parts for Airbus, Boeing and other commercial jets. If you're planning to hit a few garage sales this weekend, there is one that you definitely don't want to miss. It benefits the family of a murdered teenage girl who had just graduated from high school. Kayla Ferrante was shot last month riding in her boyfriend's car. The suspect has not been arrested and money raised at this weekend's garage sale goes toward reward money. It is Saturday and Sunday, 8 to 4 at Memorial High School. That's at 5840 South Hudson Avenue, east of LaFortune Park. Anyone with information about Kayla's death is urged to call Crimestoppers at 596 COPS. They want to dazzle military brides-to-be with free wedding gowns. Ian Parker reports from the only Oklahoma bridal store taking part in that generous mission. There's no way a guy like me could understand. Okay, being very unmarried and a man, maybe there is no way I can fully grasp how important having the perfect wedding dress can be. But Melissa Herrera can. Every picture is like, oh, what is the bride wearing? You're the picture, you're the vision, you're everything. Melissa manages impression bridal in northwest Oklahoma City. She also happens to be a military bride, her husband stationed at Tinker, which makes what her store is doing on Tuesday extra special. Brides across America, it's for the military brides, they can be qualified for a free dress. That's right. Brides with deployed husbands past, present and future, or who are going to be deployed themselves, can get a free wedding dress. And not just any dress, we're talking designer gowns ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars. Melissa helped her shop give away 15 dresses last year. Their fiancés were getting deployed in the next three months. So they didn't want to just buy a little simple dress and go down. They wanted to still have that special moment and take the pictures with them in their uniform and make it special. A free dress can go a long way, especially in this economy and for everyone going over there. Supporting our soon to be wed military couples. What else can you say except, I do. And well done. We checked and even brides from the Tulsa area are invited. So to qualify, you need to take the following to impression bridal in Oklahoma City this coming Tuesday. You need proof that you or your significant other are on active duty or proof that you or your significant other have deployed in the past five years or will deploy in the near future. That is what you call a deal. Well, if you enjoy great music on a warm summer's night, we've got just the event for you. LaFortune Park is hosting its first Friday concert from seven to nine. It's located at the gardens of LaFortune at 52nd and Hudson. The group is playing is the group that is playing rather is called Beacon Drive and they play 60s and 70s music. Adults bring lawn chairs or blankets and the kids are able to play and just, you know, enjoy them, you know, evening with other kids. And if they want to listen to music, they can. But it brings a family event as far as to this particular area. Up to 800 people are expected tonight and best of all, it is free and who doesn't like a free concert? I know. So it gets started about 45 minutes. You have plenty of time to get there and it will still be warm. Oh, it'll be hot. Yeah. Yeah. Music will be hot. Weather will be hot. Everything's hot. We had one hundred and two today. OK, but as I told you last hour to put it in perspective, so far this year we have had eight days of 100 degrees or more. Last year we had 44 days of 100 degrees or more. So hey, so far so good. But either way, probably doesn't make you feel any better. It's pretty hot out there. Here's what it looks like on city cam right now. A lot of sunshine and a lot of heat as we're still sitting way up there right now at one hundred and one. Twenty seven percent humidity. The air is a little dry. Of course, you heard about all the fire problems because of the dry conditions that we have. Southeast winds at eight one oh two. The high today, as expected, and seventy six the morning low. All right, let's check some temperatures. A lot of triple digits out there. Vanita one oh three prior at one oh two Wagner one oh one. Muscogee one oh one. Well, Mogie one oh four one oh one out in Pawnee and Ponca City. Bartlesville. You have one hundred and just about a degree or more for the heat index right now. Allergy report. Probably the best air quality I've seen in a long time. Mold spore medium category. The pollen has finally gone down in the low category and ozone low as well. We'll have to check and see if that's changed. Hd max eight thousand all dry. But we're starting to see some subtle changes in our weather pattern as some moisture moving out of Arkansas into Oklahoma, spreading a few showers and storms our way. But once they cross over the state line, they just seem to be falling apart. Of course, here's a perfect example of that. We had rain headed on into the Westville and Stillwell areas. But look what happened. It rained, but it didn't rain very long. And down in the floor county, same thing. We have showers and storms pushing out of Arkansas heading towards the Heavner and Poto area. You folks might wind up getting some rain before that falls apart. Here's future cast the rest of tonight. Pretty quiet for the rest of us. Down to 77 degrees for an overnight low tomorrow. Mixture of sudden clouds, but a lot of heat will be up to one oh one. Well, a slight chance of a pop up shower or storm tomorrow. This cold front is what's going to make all the changes in the world for us. That'll start on Sunday. And here's Saturday. Here's today. Hot one oh two. We're gonna change the the daytime high 101 with some scattered clouds and a slight chance of a shower or storm. Morning lows again across much of the area in the seventies, but watch what happens as we hit the afternoon. We're in the triple digits, but we see some green showing up. That's that slight chance of a pop up shower or storm for tomorrow. So on the eighth day planner will go with a slight chance of rain tomorrow. Otherwise another very hot day. When I want there you see on Sunday, still hot 97 but a 30% chance for showers and storms. Then look at the high on Monday 89 with a chance for showers and storms. And then next week we continue with low to mid nineties with a lot of sunshine. So major changes headed our way. Yes, next week is looking great. It does look good. Thank you.
