Super Bowl 34, coming January 30th to ABC. Planned Parenthood is passing out birth control without seeing patients first, plus folks at the Union schools are arguing over plans to build a new arena. News Channel 8 starts right now. It's 10 o'clock. Straight from the News Center at KTUL-TV in Tulsa. This is Oklahoma's News Channel 8. Coverage you can count on. A deal is made to return Stephen Thacker back to Oklahoma to face a murder charge. A little girl makes a 911 call and saves her grandmother's life. We'll show you the dramatic end to this high-speed chase. And when you think of the word prophet, you might think about the Old Testament, but some believe they exist right now. Good evening and thank you for joining us. I'm Charles Healy. And I'm Carol Lambert. Stephen Thacker will be returned to Oklahoma to stand trial for murder. Thacker is accused of murders in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Tennessee. Oklahoma's News Channel 8's Jeff Lee tells us that based on an agreement reached today, Thacker will be prosecuted in the order his alleged crimes took place. Stephen Thacker is charged with murder in three states, but he was caught in Tennessee after an alleged week-and-a-half long crime spree. With custody, the Tennessee prosecutor truly called the shots on where Thacker would be prosecuted first. He sided with Oklahoma. From the beginning, I thought the logical order would be Oklahoma, Missouri, and Tennessee, but I didn't want to do anything without first speaking to the Patterson family and then speaking to the prosecutors to see what their feelings were in Oklahoma and Missouri also. Patterson was a Tennessee service station owner and Thacker's alleged third murder victim. An official agreement to transfer Thacker from Tennessee could be completed in as little as two weeks. He would be returned to Mays County to stand trial for the kidnapping, murder, and possible sexual assault of Lacey Hill from Bixby. We're still looking at the possibility. We're having evidence analyzed that we could possibly have some DNA evidence, either from the murder weapon or possible evidence from Ms. Hill's body. Investigators also say they have a taped confession to the crimes from Thacker and surveillance video of him using the victim's debit cards after she was discovered missing. The Oklahoma prosecutor says Thacker could go on trial within a year. Jeff Lee, News Channel 8. The Mays County DA also says he's waiting to talk with Lacey Hill's family. Then he'll decide if he will seek the death penalty. It was a colder day today across northeastern Oklahoma instead of 70s like yesterday. This afternoon trying to muster just up to 50, which this time of year is still above normal. Let's go ahead and check out and see if anything's happening across northeast Oklahoma with rainfall and nothing at this hour. Live Doppler 8000 indicating all clear across eastern portion of the state, western Arkansas, southwest Missouri, and southeast Kansas. Temperatures though across the same area getting downright cold. We're down to 23 in Bartlesville, 26 in Springfield. Warmest temperatures coming into the south at Oklahoma City, McAllister, and Fort Smith all at 39. But we're talking some chilly weather, guys. I'm going to be working on a pretty good forecast for the weekend, so hang on for that. Alright, thanks very much, Jeff. A young Jenga school is credited with saving her grandmother's life. All it took was a 911 call to an EMSA dispatcher. It is a story that you're going to see only on 8, and our Valerie Sukavati shows us what happened. This is EMSA. Where is your emergency? 911 dispatchers answer hundreds of calls every day, but it's only occasionally they get one like this. My mom and my grandma are having problems breathing. Now, how old is your grandmother? She's 63. 63? Yeah. Okay. Nine-year-old Belina Guerino is the young girl in the emergency call. She says her grandmother was panicking. She's like, help! Call 911, I can't breathe! Listen to me, can you turn around and tell her that the ambulance is on the way? I can't do it. The ambulance is on the way. Belina told 911 dispatcher Carrie Morton that she feared that her dad would get mad at her. She says, no, you're not going to get in no trouble. No, no, calm down. Belina, you're doing a great job, okay? You're doing a really good job. Thank you. I'm not getting in any trouble. You're not going to get in any trouble, sweetie. You are doing an excellent thing. You are doing the right thing, okay? Okay. You're not going to get in any trouble, okay? None whatsoever. You're doing good. Stay brave for me, okay? Belina may not realize yet that she's a hero. As far as she's concerned, she was just doing what her grandmother told her to do. She told me to call 911. Exactly, and that's what you're supposed to do. You did the right thing. Okay. She says she won't worry about calling 911 again. Valerie Sugavati, News Channel 8. And Belina says she was very grateful to dispatcher Carrie Morton. By the way, Belina's grandmother is recovering in a Tulsa hospital. Tonight, a murder suspect is finally in police custody. He was hunted by Tulsa police for more than two weeks. Today, Chris Mullins surrendered with his attorney present. Mullins was wanted for a killing in North Tulsa. He's one of three suspects in that case. Deanna Owens was found stabbed and beaten to death on New Year's Day. Another suspect, 22-year-old Dean Ahmet, is still on the run. Alton White was arrested just a few days after the body was discovered. Please want to know why three teenage girls died in a garage fire in Moore. The medical examiner is trying to determine the exact cause of death. Firefighters say gasoline fumes fed a flash fire. A can of gas and a space heater were found in the storage room with the bodies. Investigators think the girls might have been sniffing the gas. A serial killer finally said he was sorry just moments before he was executed. Convicted murderer Gary Allen Walker was pronounced dead at 1220 this morning at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAllister. 31 people witnessed the execution. 46-year-old Walker was put to death for five murders in eastern Oklahoma. Walker waited on death row for more than 15 years. Coke Industries is going to be paying a hefty fine for pollution. Today the EPA ordered the company to pay $35 million. The penalties are the result from the oil spills that polluted waterways in six states, including Oklahoma. Wichita-based Coke operates more than 35,000 miles of pipeline in the United States and Canada. An Oklahoma lawmaker wants the state to be tobacco-free in 25 years. Representative Ray Vaughan of Edmond says tobacco is a highly addictive drug. He says it kills no less than 6,500 Oklahomans each year. His plan would eventually make tobacco a controlled substance. Then if it's approved, smokers, chewers, and dippers could be arrested. Last year's Tulsa's Planned Parenthood gave contraceptives to more than 11,000 women. And now the clinics are making birth control even more available. A new program, it's called HOPE, allows clinics to offer birth control without a physical exam. The patient fills out a questionnaire about her medical history. Then she gets her medicine. To stay on the program, each woman is asked to undergo a physical after one year. Some doctors argue prolonged use of birth control without an exam can be dangerous. What they've done here is they've taken a history and had it reviewed by some kind of medical person, but then there's no physical exam. And to me that is practicing medicine without fully establishing the doctor-patient relationship. All of this is done within certain guidelines. A woman can't just walk in off the street without the right type of history and say, just give me what I want. We do screen them very carefully. Planned Parenthood helps women in Tulsa, Broken Arrow, and in Arkansas. While local school districts hopes an election can help solve a big problem. Union schools want to pass a bond issue to build a brand new arena. Women from kindergarten to high school use the current facilities and sometimes they are double booked until late at night. The district wants to build a 6,000 seat center that allows more flexibility. Directors say it is needed. We fill the auditorium, we fill the lobby, we fill the gymnasium, we fill classrooms and city of theater, and still have enough space to show our kids talents. The district is asking residents to pass an 18 million dollar bond issue to build the center. That vote is February 8th. Tulsa Superintendent Dr. John Thompson is heading to Detroit this weekend. You're watching Tulsa's Leader in Television News with Carol Lambert, Charles Evey, meteorologist Travis Meyer, Cindy Morrison with 8 on your side, and Sports with Mike Siggenhorn. This is Oklahoma's News Channel 8 at 10. Coverage you can count on. I'm Cindy Baer here at St. Francis Hospital in the Newborn Nursery talking with Dr. D. Alan Clark and also new mom Sharon with little Tyler here. This whole birthing process, it's getting more family centered, isn't it? It is. I think that most physicians would agree that the whole child birthing experience has shifted from a maternal experience to an entire family experience. Are we getting dad more involved in having babies? Not only dad, but the siblings and grandparents as well. I've noticed that we're under renovation here and this area of the hospital getting bigger. Tell us about the changes. Right now we're currently renovating our newborn nursery and our maternal rooms as well. To give the rooms a more, or the whole entire experience a more homey, more comfortable feel where it looks more like a room in your house rather than a room in the hospital. Notice that you're even adding beds so dad can stay with mom and the new baby. Exactly. Yeah, so those types of changes are what's important when we're catering to the patient knowing what their needs are in the whole birthing process, keeping it family centered. That's their goal here at St. Francis Health System to keep you healthier and in the pink. The following announcement. The Pentagon is denying reports that its spy satellites were blinded by Y2K problems. The Defense Department admits there were some problems on New Year's Day. However, the extent of those problems is now up for debate. A story in the Chicago Tribune says our satellite system was blinded for most of the weekend. However, the Pentagon says that's not the case. They say computer problems garbled some high altitude photos, but the satellites were still able to detect the launch of nuclear missiles. The military says we lost some information, but the big concerns were covered. A police chase was big trouble for a fleeing suspect in Canada. Take a look at this. This is Chopper video of the red stolen truck trying to get away. The truck made a dangerous lane change to avoid a van. That van then slipped onto the snow-covered shoulder. The stolen truck then drives into the slippery shoulder, crashing into the police car. As a final attempt to get away, the truck actually gets back on the road, slides across six lanes, and traffic finally crashes into a barrier. We just saw the suspect was arrested on foot. Heavy fog contributed to a 38-car pileup on a freeway southeast of Los Angeles this morning. 38 cars. It was a miracle no one was seriously injured. The fog has been a big problem there for the last week. While people in Brazil are praying for dry weather, torrential rains and flash flooding have taken already eight lives. Many families were forced to take their rooftops to escape the rising waters. Rescue teams and helicopter crews couldn't begin to deal with all the problems. Tonight, hundreds remain homeless, including poor people who lost their makeshift homes in a deadly mudslide. Donating blood in San Francisco is making news tonight. A city official there is urging the federal government to change a policy that bans blood donations from gay men. There was an acute blood shortage in San Francisco. Supporters say since the blood is tested and retested, it should be safe. But one doctor questions the accuracy of blood screenings. He says there is still a small but significant rate of error. Many gay men feel targeted by the ban. They wonder why there is no screening for unsafe heterosexual behaviors. The FDA says it will reconsider its policy about gay men donating blood. And a leading consumer group is warning pregnant women about the risk of miscarriage and tainted food. For that reason, the Center for Science in the Public Interest is advising pregnant women to avoid certain soft cheeses, raw shellfish, rare meat and poultry, foods containing raw eggs, pates, and to always heat ready-to-eat meats to steaming. The latest advancement in cloning could be a huge help to medical research. For the first time, scientists in Oregon have cloned a monkey. Now, this animal was created by splitting embryos and implanting them in female monkeys. Four identical copies of this animal are now on the way. Now, researchers say it's important to have animals that are the same, because then they can do a better job of testing drugs and other medical treatments. Do modern-day profits exist? We'll get some clues coming up. And later, talk about your team spirit. We're going to show you how a woman and her sheep are showing their support for the Minnesota Vikings. With real beef. Uh-oh. Oh, that's gonna leave a mark. Kibbles and bits lean, kibbles and bits lean. We're lean, lean, canine machine. What do they mean by kibbles and bits lean? The great taste of kibbles and bits with 30% less fat than the leading dog food. We're gonna get us some kibbles and bits lean. 0.9 for 60 months? That's practically no interest at all. Watch out for anywhere else. Jim Glover Dodge. Meteorologist Travis Meyer has the AMS seal of approval. Now Travis, he's gonna kinda get us in the mood tonight. That's right, and you know, it's about time. It's kinda been winter for a while, and we only saw those few snowflakes that was about a what? Both of them. A week and a half ago. Beef-lory, beef-lake. But there are a few places that have had winter. In fact, let's take a look at the East Coast. In fact, they got their first taste of winter today. So if we're complaining about our problems and not getting snow, well, here's what happens when it snows, and we find that out occasionally here in Tulsa. In New England, 48 inches of snow fell across the state. Many residents were happy to see it, but some folks weren't, especially those that had to travel. Boston commuters had numerous accidents. More than a half a foot fell on Buffalo, New York this morning as well. And icy highways did cause some major tie-ups there. And it's going to get worse because there is some sub-zero weather that is going to be forecasted into that area, so it's gonna be bitter cold on top of that snow, so they get to keep it around for a while. About five inches of snow fell across Michigan during the day. Now at the airport, several flights had to be canceled, so crews could clear the runway. So again, talk about interesting things, and hey, we can get that here in Oklahoma, but usually it's in March. This is a redbud tree, and this is in March. And Sean Natter from Tulsa sent this picture in and said, you know, winter can't happen, and we might just have to wait until March before it gets here, but it will get here, and I probably believe that. There will probably be one sneaky little snowstorm some place along the way that will come right when we think spring and we're in the clear, but again, see some of those red buds there on the redbud tree that have snow on them. Well, let's hope it really doesn't happen that way. Meantime tonight, it is colder. Temperatures have fallen into the 30s most areas, still 40 here on top of Lookout Mountain. Humidity values, those are still low. The air is quite dry at this time. Northeast wind is at five miles per hour. Pressure very, very high at this time because of the colder air that came in. 50, 34 have been the high and low for today. As we get started, we take a look at some of the interesting things, and some of those interesting things are cold temperatures. Well, it's different compared to what it has been. 23 right now in Bartlesville, 36 here in Tulsa. And again, a little bit warmer to the south where it was a little bit warmer during the afternoon. The winds, they're not blowing too strong, but where they are, there are some teens and 20s as far as wind chills tonight. So again, that's the good news. So we're not having to worry too much about bitter, bitter cold, just plain old cold. And as you can see, across much of the central United States, cold weather is around, but again, not bitter. The warmest temperature is balmy, 64 degrees still in Houston at this hour, and pretty nice 49 in Dallas. And again, that really cold air didn't make it that far to the south. Satellite picture shows that snowstorm we were talking about that went on through Michigan, also through Buffalo, New York, and then on off into the northeast. Now it's kind of died off. There's still some snow showers and snow affect, lake effect snows occurring across the eastern Great Lakes area. And out to the west, a very strong storm system. But again, this is where all the action is. Here in Oklahoma, we continue to enjoy good weather, although a little bit on the nippy side. Now, the bitter cold air so far this season, if you remember, we haven't seen any sub-zero weather to speak of. Finally, we find a little bit around Maine. You can see some sub-zero readings coming in there. But again, balmy south and finally a little bit of cold weather to the north. Well, what's going on? Satellite picture indicating that no problems are coming up for us as we see no storms on the horizon. There are a few high clouds that will be filtering across Kansas tonight and also maybe portions of northern Oklahoma. But those are kind of falling apart as we go through the early morning hours. It'll be cold, frosty morning, temperatures in the 20s, most areas of northeast Oklahoma. By the time we get to noontime, we'll start to see a warming trend again, as if that's a surprise. By afternoon, starting to get a little windy out in the high plains. Again, not much going on. Could be a few showers stuck in the far south Texas areas, but overall very mild weather. And again, we almost have to pinch ourselves because this time of year we should be in the cold low to mid 40s at best. And normally we don't even get that good. Temperatures will be in the 20s by morning, so it'll be a frosty start for your travel or commute in the early morning hours. By afternoon, though, 50s to near 60 degrees, so we're talking pretty good across the area. Seven-day planner for your weekend. Looking good. A little breezy, but again, that's not bad. And our extended forecast is looking for good weather as well. A little bit colder as we go on into Monday afternoon or Tuesday as we get a little bit cold shot, but then back up again for Wednesday and Thursday. So still looking the same. We looked at new models tonight and nothing's really changed, so still good. All right. Thumbs up. Ow, what was that for? Pinching you. For what? For pinching ourselves. Oh, okay. I got pinched. You ought to get pinched too. I hear you. In the future, watch what you see. With permission. Okay. When you think about someone predicting the future, you think about the weather guy and maybe even a psychic. And others may call them prophets. Up next, people come together to discover what a prophet really is. And on line two, we have Frank calling from his car. Hi. I'd like to say something to my ex-girlfriend. Ex-girlfriend? In our sometimes frantic, fast-paced world, some people have searched for a deeper meaning to life. And that might explain the popularity of predicting the future, but News Channel H.F. Errol reports for many Christians, it's all about understanding what's already been written. A large crowd packed inside Higher Dimensions Church in South Tulsa, and this was no ordinary gathering. You see, this is what's being called a prophetic conference. A prophet is really a spokesman for the Most High because God is more willing to speak to people than perhaps sometimes people are willing to listen to what he has to say. Pam Burnett shies away from the title of prophetess because of what she calls misconceptions about the word prophet in our modern day. The world is accustomed to taking prophets and psychics and kind of throwing them in the same stew pot, and we're worlds apart. While psychics may focus on the stars or cards or even psychic energy, Burnett says her comments and teachings are based solely on the Bible, the Word of God. Burnett is among several people described as a company of prophets at this four-day conference. Burnett's predictions, among others, she believes that fear will be a controlling force everywhere in our future and inventions will be born as a result. She also believes that strange weather and natural disasters will be on the increase, but she believes her skill at interpreting Scripture is not her gift alone. But anybody that would tune their ear into Him can really hear from God, and that's what a prophetic conference is all about. And it's that message of inclusion which brings hope and promise to many of those here. Jeff Farrell, News Channel 8. And the conference runs through Sunday at Higher Dimensions. There is no cost except for a brunch on Saturday. Now to Zigg and Sports, who continues to predict big things for TU this year. Boy, I tell you what, they're just rolling right along the hurricane. Since then, the Cane have been flying, winning by an average of nearly 20 points a game. Last night's eight-point win at Creighton was one of those close games that they really needed. As a coach, I want to not have to sweat it out, but we needed a game like that because it's not going to be easy from here on out. And so in order to know how to win close games, you need to be able to play a few of those. During the current eight-game winning streak, a different player has stepped up to lead the team on different nights. Last night it was Tony Heard with a career-high 19. I was just kind of trying to keep everybody calm so we could get back to where we needed to be because we were making mental mistakes. And I really didn't think it was slipping away so much. I just knew we had to change what we were doing. This team is clicking on all cylinders right now as they continue to set their sights on having success during March Madness. You know, you'll never know. You have to watch out for it. I mean, we played together as a team. I mean, down in TCU, we all had double-figure points. And I mean, I think with that and doing that, can't nobody beat us that way. Up next for TCU, they're on the road down in Houston for a Sunday afternoon showdown with Rice. That game has been changed from Saturday to Sunday. It's 2 o'clock. Oklahoma State freshman Andre Williams interviewed today with federal prosecutors. So we'll continue to enjoy some mighty fine weather across eastern Oklahoma. Very good. Could be a lot worse, Trav. It certainly could. Thanks a lot. As you know, it's a long, cold winter in Minnesota, so the fact that the Vikings are alive and well in the playoffs is going to some folks' heads. One woman is even outfitting her sheep with Vikings jerseys. That's a clear symbol of team spirit, but it also keeps the wool clean, so it's easier to work with later on all kinds of different designs there. So far, only about half the herd is dressed up in Viking pride, but if the Vikings keep winning, she says they should all be looking good come Super Sunday. That kind of makes them frisky, doesn't it? Oh, there you go. You got the Viking print on the back. Nice touch. Very original. I'm sure she'll do well in the fashion business.
