The music of Third Eye Blind. The local news is next. A cruise ship explosion takes at least four crew member lives while the blast sends some passengers overboard. And on this Memorial Weekend, two brothers reflect on the military bond their family shares. The news is next. Live from the News Leader, this is the KTTC News Center at 10. Good evening, I'm Jess Abrahamson. Memorial Weekend is a time for memories. Tonight we begin with the military bond two brothers share. As News Center's Asha Zamuda tells us, it's a bond that took on special significance today. Klaus and brothers, like dozens of others, circle around the Soldiers Field Veterans Memorial. It's a great dedication for anybody that has served our country. Leroy's visiting his brother Jerry in Rochester, seeing the memorial in the town he once lived in too for the first time. The pair find many familiar names, including their own. Jerry and Leroy both served in the Navy, one of their other brothers in the Air Force. They say it's a walk down memory lane. It's a lot of us good memories because we were in peacetime. And my brother was on a different ship, he was in different parts of the world. So we're talking about things that he's seen and done and I talk about things that I've seen and done. So between the two of us we get our experiences together. Together they also talk and worry about Veterans of the future serving in Iraq. Every time you hear the news you know you think about what else is going on and what's new, what's happening over there you know and are they going to get it all cleaned up you know and be able to everybody get back to their normal lives and bring all our troops home and everybody be safe. So they too may have good memories come next Memorial Day weekend in Rochester, Asha Zamuda, KTGC News Center. We'll have details on tomorrow's local memorial events in just a few minutes. A special law that more than 3,000 Hmong veterans in Minnesota have used to become citizens will expire tomorrow. The Hmong Veterans Naturalization Act made it easier for 45,000 Hmong veterans and their wives and widows to become U.S. citizens. Nationwide only about 5,300 people became citizens under this law. Vacation plans turned into chaos this morning on a cruise ship in Miami. An explosion on the Norway ship has taken at least four crew member lives. More as we begin America Tonight. An explosion in the engine room of this Norwegian cruise ship also injured 20 others, 14 of them critically. All 2100 passengers were evacuated, some were thrown into the water with the force of the blast. The Coast Guard says the explosion was an accident. A steam leak is being blamed. Police found five bodies in a Florida home today after a 12-hour standoff. They arrived at the house yesterday afternoon, but when the man inside threatened suicide, the police backed off. Finally, officials persuaded the man to release his four-year-old son. Twelve hours later, the man surrendered. When police went inside, they found five bodies in the house. The corpses were in different rooms and in various states of decomposition. Police say they don't know who the people are or how they died. And one lane of a major interstate is open again in Nebraska, after an overpass collapsed on it this weekend. Interstate 80 has been closed since Friday night when a semi-truck crashed into a bridge support, causing it to collapse onto the highway. That driver was killed and another one was injured. Now half of the damaged overpass is removed and traffic is moving again. An accident on Highway 52 sent two people to the hospital. The state patrol says a minivan driven by a St. Paul man rear-ended another vehicle while both were traveling south on Highway 52 near Tillies Tavern. The minivan driver had a 76-year-old woman and two young children inside. Mayo 1 airlifted the woman to St. Mary's. The state patrol says no one else in the van was hurt. A Rochester man drove the other vehicle. He went to St. Mary's by ambulance and is okay. This accident remains under investigation. Budget talks continued tonight at the Capitol. Negotiators are looking for a breakthrough and several spending bills. Governor Pawlenty joined them. Lawmakers tried to strike deals today. So far bills can be ready for floor votes on Tuesday. The federal No Child Left Behind Act has tagged 400 Minnesota elementary schools with a grade they didn't want to receive. The schools were tagged as needing improvement. Brad Woodard takes us inside a Twin Cities elementary school. At Jefferson School in Minneapolis. There's you know magic that happens every day. Our children, the children that come to me you know do their best. They're trying 110%. But the best efforts of students and teachers aside. We have a lot of work to do. Don't get me wrong in terms of continuing to improve achievement. We're not there. And they are not alone. Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act it's predicted that nearly half of Minnesota's 1,007 elementary schools need to improve based on test scores. In Minneapolis and St. Paul 90% of the schools have at least one group of students out of a possible 18 who didn't make adequate yearly progress. The figure in suburban and large rural schools is 47%. And statewide an alarming statistic concerning one of the largest gaps in the nation between white students and black. A high school graduation rate by one study has us second to the bottom in the country for the graduation of black students when overall our graduation rate is seventh in the nation when you count everybody. And if you're wondering what's at the root of the problem you are not alone. That's what we have to find out. I mean that the first the first step towards solving a problem is to identify it. These data identify that problem. This represents a child right? Right. And this allows you to map that child's progress, document what has been done, what works. Correct. It's a covenant of sorts between student, teacher, and parents. We've essentially documented that we're all working on the same page to get the child to that magic number. And from the looks of test scores over the past five years at least at Jefferson. And we have a nice trend line moving up in the right direction. There's evidence it's working. About half of the schools were identified in only one or two areas out of the possible 18. Minnesota teenagers are finding out that a slumping economy means it's not so easy to get that summer job. Nationally employment for teenagers ages 16 to 19 seeking jobs is at an eight-year high. It's at 18% and is expected to get worse this summer. Twin Cities employers say that while struggling businesses have cut back the number of available jobs. Teen applications have more than doubled since last summer. It also doesn't help that out-of-work adults are applying for jobs traditionally targeted to teenagers. According to the US Labor Department it hasn't been this bad for teens since July of 1995. A North Dakota woman who severed her finger on a folding chair is suing Target for selling the item without proper warning. Kathleen McDonald of Cass County says she was camping with her family at Fort Lincoln State Park in North Dakota when the accident happened. McDonald is seeking more than $50,000 from Target. McDonald's lawsuit says her left finger was caught between the frame of the chair and the front leg severing the tip. Direct TV is suing more than 150 Minnesotans who allegedly have devices that enable them to steal Direct TV's signal and watch the company's programs for free. The lawsuits are against Minnesotans who live in rural areas and in the Twin Cities. Direct TV claims the defendants have plugged a doctored computer chip card into a satellite TV receiver to snag an unseen signal that's beamed all over the country. The spokesman says Direct TV has sued more than 2,000 people nationwide in the last year and plans to sue several thousand more. Well it is time to check in with Randy Brock. The people you know, the news you trust. A Memorial Weekend tradition ran smoothly today as runners in the Med City Marathon made their way through Rochester's city streets and paths. Some took the 26.2 mile challenge solo, others opted for relays of two and four runners. This year's motto is taking away people's breath for eight years. Grow every year. It's fun for us because we have runners that run six and a half miles one year, 13.1 the next and then complete a marathon the next year. So we grow in numbers that way. Joe Seipel has the top times in sports. If you're hoping to get fit you can still include McDonald's. The fast food giant has announced changes in an effort to make their happy meals healthier. Don't worry the classic meal deal will still come with a burger and fries for a healthy twist. Mickey D's will offer packaged grapes and apples as an add-on option with the meals. The change is part of the company's efforts to present healthy items on the menu in an attempt to boost slumping sales. Still to come tonight, Joe Seipel is NBA Western Conference Finals first. Today was a great day for a run. Hats off to all the marathon runners. Well tomorrow we've got more nice weather on tap. We'll let you know just how warm it's gonna be and when we could see a few rain showers around the area anytime soon. Your precision forecast is coming right up after the break. It's a hot new level of convenience. Hello, I'm Candace Gross, class Monday at noon. There are many creams and high-tech machines on the market that claim to get rid of unwanted cellulite, but what works and what doesn't? We're gonna take a look at the bottom line Memorial Day at noon. Here is your precision forecast. Welcome back everybody on this beautiful Sunday evening. Nice sunset there. We got just a few thin high clouds through the area. No rain anywhere close to home tonight and great news. We don't have any more on tap for you there. Give the whole forecast away right there, at least for tomorrow. Now we do have clear skies outside right now. Very nice night underway as we take a look at the memorial there from the Sookla Farm Skycam in downtown Rochester. Now the current temperature at the Rochester International Airport, 60 degrees again, mostly clear skies, winds light out of the north, only nine miles per hour. Our dew points 35 degrees, very low, not a lot of moisture here. Our humidity is 39% and the air pressure is on the rise. Look at high temperatures today. We climbed into the low to mid seventies. Actually Winona today it's 79 degrees while Rochester's high was 72. Twin cities 75 and it was slightly cooler to the north but still very nice. Around Duluth 65. Current temperatures are in the mid fifties up there. We're at 60, fifties even into Canada, seventies out into Montana still at this hour. So the ridge of high pressure that's made for the very warm temperatures from Arizona all the way up into Montana. Let's finally starting to take a little more charge here over the area as we have one upper low. You see that spin in the clouds right there. We have high pressure over the surface that low exiting the area. Very nice weather here and that ridge of high pressure at the surface is carved out a nice cloud free hole there in the center center of the country and we have showers and thunderstorms ahead of this system along the southern U. S. Into the southern high plains and those showers and storms extend all the way through Colorado, Wyoming and up into Montana. A little bit of cloud cover well out to our west, but we have no new systems coming our way really anytime soon. Nothing of any grand significance. So good news there, but we will see a little rain later on. Temperatures tonight are in the fifties cooler over the Great Lakes underneath that large upper low that we saw just moments ago, slightly cooler underneath some rain and some cloud covered skies there into parts of Colorado and nineties upper nineties still in phoenix at this time there a few days ago, though they were in the lower hundreds. So I guess a little bit of a cool down there into parts of Arizona close to home, though we have some thin clouds. That's really all I've had to talk about here today. So we don't have any showers or storms or the chance of any anytime soon. Just very quiet weather and look how little this changes. Starting tonight here we have 10 o'clock going into tomorrow morning, high pressure, kind of retrograding or moving from east to west, holding on tight tomorrow morning. Then it kind of slips back over to the east a little bit. We may see a little additional cloud cover as we get into tomorrow afternoon and evening, but absolutely nothing to spoil the outdoor grilling activities. Then high pressure as we get into Tuesday morning, no rain anywhere close, but cloud cover in central Iowa and maybe a few storms developing out there into Montana as we get into Tuesday temperatures tonight are gonna be going from where we are now, the upper fifties and lower sixties to the mid forties through the course of the night. Then tomorrow afternoon, look for highs to reach into the seventies should be a gorgeous memorial day. Tonight's temperatures are gonna be a little below the average, but only by about five degrees. Then highs tomorrow hitting about 78 in Winona, Mason City and Algona and upper seventies elsewhere. A very comfortable day, lots of sunshine in your forecast details for tonight, mainly clear skies, a little 45 tomorrow's highs again are gonna be around the upper seventies should be a very nice, pleasant day went out of the northeast to only 5 to 15 miles per hour. Upper seventies continue Tuesday. We could get one of the warmest readings we've had all season long 79 degrees than an isolated shower Wednesday and the same applies for Friday and Sunday. So no big rains anytime soon, but it would be nice to get a few sprinkles to water the lawn. It's also nice to know that we can finish off the holiday weekend with lots of sunshine and warmth and happiness. Good news indeed. Good news all around. All right. Thank you, Randy. When we return, we go in search of one of Minnesota's most elusive birds and we'll learn why the sharp tailed grouse is so hard to find. That's next on your newsletter. Menards save big money at the NAR. The sharp tailed grouse is not a threatened or endangered species, but finding one in Minnesota is tough. Populations have been on a steady decline for nearly 50 years. The reason the gradual loss of crucial habitat Dennis Stauffer explains. Shipped dance of the male sharp tailed grouse is spirited. David Dickey is the DNR's area wildlife manager in Aiken. You see how two birds have run up to each other and kind of face off. It's like a like a line right there. It's worth the price of admission. Okay, every spring, the males returned to this dancing ground called a lack and established boundaries only they can identify. It's an annual right of spring, but one happening less and less. That's strictly because of deteriorating habitat. Minnesota's once abundant sharp tail population is struggling. It's definitely down over 30 40 years ago. Sharp tails need large open areas of prairie with some brush through a process called natural succession. Prairies left undisturbed become forests. Grouse thrive on the in between. So the best way to restore grouse is with this. The sharp tail is pretty closely tied to fire. Native Americans refer to him as a firebird. Private landowners play a vital role. Bird and Kurt Carlson are helping sharp tails thrive by continuing to farm their land. We've had people, you know, photographers from Wisconsin and in other places, other states stopped by and say how much they appreciate, you know, us opening up our land to it, keeping their land open for the sharp tails and for those who come to watch. I'm Dennis Stauffer with the Minnesota DNR. Here's a summer road trip idea. If you would like to schedule a time to watch the sharp tailed grouse on their dancing grounds, call the Aitken area Wildlife Office. That number is 218 927 69 15. Coming up next in sports, the Mavs and Spurs tangle in Dallas and the twins trying to make it four out of six out west. New Center Sports Joe Seibel is a next with your highlights. They have reclaimed their spot atop the American League Central standings. Today marks the rubber match of a three game series with the Mariners to Safeco Field in Seattle. What a great place for a ballgame. We'll start in the first inning two on for Bobby Kelty and he singles up the middle. Jacques Jones will score from second to the Twins have a 1-0 lead early and they add to it in the top of the second. First pitch of the inning, Dustin Moore. Good extension and it will sail out of the yard. 2-0 Twins on Moore's big fly. As we move to the fifth, that's still the score. The Twins are looking for more. Chris Gomez on third with one out. Christian Guzman flares a little fly ball to right. You don't want to test Ichiro Suzuki's arm, that's for sure. You really don't want to test Ichiro Suzuki's arm. Well Al Newman decides to test it and Gomez is out by a mile. It's Ichiro's second assist of the inning. Meantime Rick Reed is throwing a gem into the seventh with a shutout intact until Brett Boone leads off the inning with an oppo blast that clears the wall and right. 2-1 Twins still in the lead and they'd get that run back in the eighth when Torrey Hunter singles through the left side scoring Bobby Kelty from third. 3-1 Twins. Everyday Eddie would give us a scare. Edgar Martinez to the wall. This one would tie it but Moore's got it and the Twins hold on for the 3-1 win. So that means they took two of three from Oakland, two or three from Seattle. That's a successful trip out west. Torrey Hunter had a big night two for two with an RBI. Rick Reed a great, not debut, a great night on the hill. Seven Indians pitched one earned run, only one strikeout but no walks. Monday's an off day. They will welcome Oakland to town on Tuesday. When the Mavericks Dirk Nowitzki went down the sprained knee Friday night it looked like there would be no way he would play in game four tonight but as game time approached it suddenly became possible enough to make it a game time decision. Game time decision was no. Dirk on the bench for this one. The Mavs wouldn't need him early. Nick Van Exel will miss but Michael Finley beats the buzzer. It's a four-point Dallas lead after one to the second. Nash for four. He hits the three and gets fouled. The Mavs clinging to a small lead but into the fourth spurs up two now and Bruce Bolt will drill a three ball making it a five-point San Antonio lead. Last check 31 seconds to go 96-91 San Antonio and this one is just about to get wrapped up. No one has ever won the Indianapolis 500 three consecutive times. That's a milestone. Haleo Castroneves could have won with a win at Indy today. It's the 87th Indianapolis 500 the greatest open wheel race of them all. Robbie Gordon wishes he could do it over. Trouble with his gearbox ends the race for Gordon but nothing would stop Gilles Dufresne. He becomes the 62nd winner at Indy. Fellow countryman Haleo Castroneves finished second. Michael Andretti who's retiring after the race did not finish. Over in NASCAR Jimmy Johnson won a rain short in Coca-Cola 600. Let's hear from the winner of this year's Indianapolis 500. I felt everything right now. I cried, I smiled, I laughed. I've been confused, clear. My mind is all over the place. It's really, it's hard to describe you know what you feel when you fight so much for something that you love you know and you finally accomplish what you really wanted. It's an unbelievable feeling. I mean I'm really overflowing with emotion. Anika didn't make the cut for the colonial has had plenty of other stories like Justin Leonard who just needed a birdie on 18 to card a 59 but a short approach leaves him with this chip for bird. He goes right at it but no luck. Leonard ties the best round in colonial history with a 61 but the weekend belongs to this man Kenny Perry on 18 looking to go 19 strokes under par and he will. That is a tournament record a long history too. It started back in the 1930s and Perry has to wear the hideous jacket that the winner gets but I'm sure he'll take the trade off. Nice win for Kenny Perry. Here in Rochester it was race day for runners. The Med City Marathon has been around since 1996 and coming over the bridge is a 2003 winner Brett Evans from West St. Paul across the finish line in just over two hours and 43 minutes. He was the men's winner. The women's winner is Benita Glassford of Lake Mills Minnesota. She finished the 26.2 mile race in three hours 13 minutes and 59 seconds. Here are the rest of the age group winners. You know I was impressed by some of the these people are amazing the endurance. I had a chance to run the Twin Cities Marathon a couple years back and when I finished which would took almost five hours I was just exhausted and dead and these people run across the finish line and they just grab their things and go on start walking like like they're just out for a jog. It's it's amazing the endurance of some of those people have. Someday. Yeah. That's cool I want to hear more about that marathon. Yeah it was a tough adventure. It's it really is an admirable thing when people like that can do it for time. I just did it to finish. Mm-hmm. Still a good story. All right we're gonna be right back. We've always lived out in the country. Oh we spend a lot of time outside. It's just so peaceful and quiet but you know all we got to do is throw some stakes on the fire and we got ourselves a party. You know when you live in a small town Walmart is definitely a way of life. And this time of year we live in that garden department. Lawn furniture, grilling supplies. I love to to be able to just get lots of flowers. And you just can't beat those prices. Somebody asked me, they said how's it to live out there and I said it's like getting up on vacation every morning. Oh you bet. It just doesn't get any better than this.
