I'm Peter Jennings. Good night. This is ABC and KTNV Las Vegas. My mom just woke me up and said, we gotta get out of here. Cops are at the door and there's a bomb next door. A neighborhood is evacuated in Las Vegas after a chase leads police to a stash of pipe bombs. And by taking a page from a local outdoors magazine, you find yourself on site to some fun on the rocks. But first, imagine waking up every morning to a constant pounding of blasts for most of the day. Good evening everyone, I'm John Daly. And I'm Allison McCarthy. That's exactly what residents of Pecoli Ranch are experiencing, thanks to a wrecking ball that's wreaking havoc near their neighborhood. The wrecking ball is busy pounding away at Caliche Deposits at a construction site near Fort Apache in Charleston, right next to Pecoli Ranch. But to neighbors, is it the sound of progress or an unnecessary annoyance? Cecily Tynan has the inside story. It's irritating to wake up to boom. It's very disturbing in the morning. And it does upset the dogs. The pounding occurs about every 20 seconds and it just runs all day. And after a while it's like a headache that doesn't go away. Pecoli Ranch residents are calling it the headache machine. This wrecking ball is drumming up noise, vibrations and plenty of complaints, as it tries over and over again to break ground on a new apartment complex. If you live in one of the many developing areas across the valley, you know you have to deal with a certain amount of construction noise. But residents here at Charleston and Fort Apache have had to endure constant pounding for more than a month now. And even builders say the project is taking longer than expected. We are sorry that it's happening, but it's the only way to do it. We have to do it. We don't have an alternative. And we're going to do it and do it as quickly as possible. We've called several times and they say they're going to stop in a day or two, but it keeps going on. There have been numerous complaints. We just want to know when it's going to end. Builders say that's not always easy to predict, especially when you're trying to break through the rock solid surface of Caliche. Residents don't care what the ground's made of. They just want construction workers to do one thing. No, stop it. But the pounding nuisance will continue from seven in the morning until five at night every day until the job is done. Builders say hopefully that'll be on Monday, but that's not written in stone. Cecily Tynan, News 13. Much worse than an alarm clock. Builders say they've been taking every precaution to make sure the excavation doesn't damage any surrounding areas, but there's really nothing they can do about the noise and the vibrations. Two armed suspects are at large tonight after leading police on a hair-raising chase and a bomb scare. The bomb squad was called in and this East Las Vegas neighborhood was evacuated. Police found a stash of homemade pipe bombs inside one of the suspect's vehicles. Two suspects are on the run, wanted for allegedly stealing cars and dealing drugs, and now for making bombs. One of our auto theft detectives located what he believed to be some homemade pipe bombs in a vehicle parked on the street. And as you can see, as a result of that, the neighborhoods, we've established a perimeter. The bomb squad came in and they've done their thing and removed the devices from the vehicle. My mom just woke me up and said, we gotta get out of here, cops are at the door and there's a bomb next door. So I just freaked out and put my stuff in the car and we just left. FBI! Now when the suspects escaped, police launched a door-to-door search. For hours they joined FBI agents checking dozens of homes in the area, but all they found were residents who were dazed and confused by all the commotion. No sign of those armed suspects. The search is also on tonight for suspects from a triple shooting in a downtown neighborhood. It happened around dinnertime last night on the 700 block of North 11th Street. Police say the suspects left the neighborhood after arguing with two residents. Minutes later, those residents were critically wounded when gunfire rang out. One man suffered a critical chest wound, another man shot in the back is in fair condition tonight, and a ricocheted bullet hit a woman in the leg. The suspected weapon was found tossed behind a nearby apartment. News from the O.J. Simpson murder case moved to Maryland today where a lab conducted DNA testing on blood found at the murder scene. The DNA is said to be the most crucial part of the case. Defense experts refused to observe the testing today, saying the conditions were unacceptable. Lab technicians still follow court orders and cut 10 percent of the blood samples for use by the defense. Also today, it looks like Al Collings, O.J.'s friend, will not be charged initially for helping O.J. elude police by driving him around Los Angeles. However, the L.A. District Attorney's Office says Collings may still be charged later. Collings is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow. Well, for the first day in Munch, the sidewalk in front of Harris Hotel is clear of T-shirt vendors. A court order is now in effect that prohibits T-shirt sellers from setting up their tables. The restraining order also bans those so-called smut peddlers who pass out pornographic ads. For the most part, everyone appears to be obeying the court's ruling. The difference to us is not just to us, but I think also to our customers and our guests. As you can see, it's easy to get around out here. There's nothing to trip over. There's no people to try to squeeze by. And that was one of our issues, and perhaps our key issue was the safety issue. Now, T-shirt vendors are not out of business, though. The court ruling applies only to the sidewalk in front of Harris. And the vendors have simply taken their tables down the street. The fire crews were back on the scene at the top of Hilton sign this afternoon. Construction crews were welding when a spark apparently caught some of the remaining plastic sign on fire. The crews got down to the ground safely, and another piece of the windblown sign came tumbling down. It held the title as the world's tallest sign, climbing over 300 feet until that big July 18th windstorm. Over at Circus Circus, executives are feeling the heat from a lawsuit filed on behalf of more than 4,000 stockholders. The class action suit names Circus Circus as well as nine executives, including outgoing chairman Bill Bennett. The suit alleges the company deprived stockholders the maximum value of their shares by adopting a safeguard to avert a takeover. As a result, Circus fell 25 cents a share today. Primadonna was off a dollar, but Boy Group was up 19 cents. On Wall Street today, the Dow was up 10 points. Lower interest rates on the bond market and a stronger dollar overseas help stocks. Well, just ahead on News 13, a flip through a local magazine that will have you climbing the walls. And a homecoming for a famous Las Vagans bringing his love to the stage. Stay tuned. What may make this national magazine so appealing to Las Vegas is that it was created by Las Vegas. It is a brand new magazine that's hitting national news racks. But not only does it mention Las Vegas, it's also published here. News 13's Angela Rodriguez gives us an inside look into On Sight magazine. Most of us have at least heard about Red Rock. It's practically in our backyard. Now it's gaining national attention thanks to this magazine, On Sight. On Sight is what you call a mountain magazine. It's about rock climbing. Las Vegas' Randy Falk and his partner Mark Diedrickson created the magazine. I've kind of always wanted to do this and I've been the author of another book and I've written other articles as well for other climbing publications. I was a mass communications major initially in college and I've always kind of been in the fold of journalism as a hobby. So far, On Sight, which by the way is completely put together in Falk's home, is quite successful. It's already in 1,200 stores around the nation and Falk says within one month, 75% of the magazines have already sold. Did you expect when you made this magazine that it would do so well so quickly? I had an idea about it. I didn't think it would go ballistic this quick, but I had an idea it would probably go over pretty good. What will this do for Las Vegas? It literally puts us on the map for hiking enthusiasts. Picture after picture shows the challenges of our Red Rock Canyon and Mount Charleston. So who knows? Rock climbers from all over the world may just stake a claim on Vegas Mountains. Angela Rodriguez, News 13. Now the magazine also focuses on a different form of climbing called frozen waterfall climbing. There are actually pictures in the magazine of people climbing waterfalls at Mount Charleston. I like your pose. It looks kind of neat there. I bet it's got beautiful pictures too. A reopening for the Whitney Community Center drew a big crowd. About 300 people welcomed the much improved community center with a big party. There was food, drinks, and entertainment. It took about three months to complete, but the Parks and Recreation Department says the building was due for a facelift. This used to be called East Las Vegas. The town board wanted to change its image, so the area was renamed Whitney, and the refurbishing of the community center is all part of that new image for this area of town. The community center is about 20 years old. The improvement project cost about $60,000. There's somebody else out having a good time tonight. It's Nate. Oh, who would that be? Wait till you see his hat. I know. It's pretty outrageous, Nate. Oh, you know what? I'm going to have to go get the hat. You don't have the hat. Oh. I will get the hat back. Well, Nate's always taking up good causes. He's got another one. That's right. He's with the United Way out there, Nate. I hope I didn't make you. I made you go run and get that hat again, didn't I? All right. I mean, it's a tropical thing out here at the Tropicana. It's actually the Pace Center's kickoff campaign is what it's referred to. There are 25 companies throughout Las Vegas that the United Way likes to set the pace for the United Way campaign for the rest of us. So we probably won't be getting involved with the United Way campaign for another month or so, but these 25 Pace Center companies are getting started right now. And the Tropicana had all kinds of fun earlier today with dunk tanks and throwing darts. And now they're treating their employees to, oh, gosh, all kinds of good stuff. Is this some fish here, Pam? Very nice. What do we have here? Some roast beef or chicken or I can't tell what that is. What was that? Pork. Yes. OK. And we got some carrots here. You kids having fun taking part in the United Way? We love it. It's wonderful. Super. Well, I'll let you get back to your supper. Winona, how's it going? It's going great. We're having a great time here today. You betcha. And we've got Tropicana and ice sculpture. And John and Allison, it's just too bad that you guys didn't get to go in the dunk tank. In the meantime, while the folks continue enjoying the Pace Center kickoff for the United Way, we're going to get you into the weather, as it was another very hot day here in the Las Vegas Valley. Checking on the high temps. Well, how about 114 or so up in North Las Vegas, close to 120 down in the southeast part of the valley, Boulder City at 109. Even Mount Charleston getting into the heat with a high of 88 today. Now, officially for the city at McCarran Airport, lots of sunshine. It is 110, humidity 11 percent, south winds at 12. And we actually did up another notch on the thermometer. The high today was 112. Low this morning, 86, the air quality in the moderate category. Very warm up on the north end of the lake at 115 and Logan Dale and Overton, even over the hump in Perump. Very hot stuff at 116. Caliente at 101. Now, the satellite out in space kind of did a little hiccup today, but you get the general idea of high pressure continuing to hold over most of the south. And look at Arizona as the clouds really fired up there this afternoon. They had some severe thunderstorms and report of a funnel cloud east of Tucson. We remain mostly in the clear and we expect to remain so for the next couple of days. A severe thunderstorm watch over parts of New Mexico and also over a couple of states in the east. The cold fronts continue to show rain along the eastern seaboard and rain over the Rockies and spreading a little bit into northeast Nevada for tomorrow as another front starts to approach. Checking in for tomorrow for your family and friends. More storms over the eastern half and a mixture of sunshine and clouds for us. Again, the afternoon storms popping up in the Rockies. High temperatures for your family and friends. Well, quite hot. Look at Boise at another 100 degree day. 101 in Salt Lake City and unusually cool in the Midwest in the 70s and 80s. For us, clear tonight. How about that? What a surprise. Maybe a couple of clouds around, light winds, low to mid 80s. Back to around 110 tomorrow. We'll start out with lots of sunshine before some more clouds roll in. And the mid 80s out at the lake and 115 tomorrow. Winds may be picking up to 20. Cool spot, of course, as usual, Mount Charleston. The mid 40s tonight and the mid 80s tomorrow. And a look at the extended forecast. We think the clouds are eventually going to move out probably by the end of the weekend. There may even be a slight chance for a sprinkle up on Mount Charleston on Saturday. But the high temperatures remaining between 105 and 110. So once again, it is the pace setter kickoff for the United Way campaign just to kind of get in your mind that it's time to start thinking about helping out the United Way that helps out so many social service agencies throughout southern Nevada. John, Allison, we're having fun out here and we'll be back in the studio tonight at 11. Okay. Don't forget that hat. No, no way. And it is for a good cause so hopefully people will contribute. Nate, bring us back some dessert if you hear us. At least a hat anyway. Yeah. Well, you know, for more than 30 years since it was originally presented, Camelot, starring Robert Goulet, has now moved back into Las Vegas. Entertainment reporter Alicia Jacobs spoke with Robert Goulet. Alicia. Thanks, John. Robert Goulet's diverse talents have kept him busy in concerts, television, and films. But his first love has always been the theater. Now the Tony Award winning Las Vegas is once again portraying the noble and idealistic King Arthur. And he's bringing Camelot to Las Vegas. With this sword, Excalibur, I knight you, Sir Tom of Warwick, and I command you to return to England and carry out my orders. After two years of touring the country, Robert Goulet is winding things down right here at home. I wanted to play Las Vegas and my producer was afraid to play Las Vegas because theater has not been known to do well in this town. And he said, well, all right, if you want to, we'll close up shop there. And so after all these weeks, we're closing up shop here. And I sincerely hope we do well. This is the time of King Arthur and we reach for the stars. If you haven't seen Goulet and Camelot, this just might be your last chance. I think this is it. Forever? I think forever. I think I've run the gamut. I've hit almost every major city in North America. And I don't think I'm going to be ready to do it again. It's time to go on to something else. They sit around and one... Just seven months ago, Goulet was diagnosed with cancer. He now has an important message to share with others. Because I had my prostate removed in December and my PSA test proves that it's been removed completely. So I'm one of the lucky ones. If you're at the age of 35 or 40, go and get a PSA test. It's a little blood test. It shows that you may have a problem. My digital exams when I had my physicals every year showed nothing. I had no enlargement of the prostate. I had no problems with my bladder. Nothing at all. So if I had not gone to take the PSA test, within a year and a half, I'd be dead. Don't let it be forgot that once... Any chance we'll see Robert Goulet back on the Las Vegas stage? Well, there are no Las Vegas stages for me. I mean, there are a few clubs left with star policy, but they've got their stars in hand. And I'm not one of them. So I shan't be working here in that capacity to my knowledge. It's very historic, the fact that he is in town here playing Camelot after so many years. I imagine he's going to keep busy even though he's not going to do Camelot. He will. Unfortunately, he told me he's going to be having a hernia operation next week. Just what he needed. But I think once he gets past that, he'll be back and busy as ever. Okay, I saw him last night. He seemed like he was in great spirits. Yeah, exactly. What's coming up this week? Well, you can see Robert Goulet and Camelot through this Sunday at Cashman Theatre. The Supremes, the Shirelles and the Marvellettes are in concert Saturday night at the Aladdin. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons open tonight at Bally's. Natalie Cole also opens tonight at Caesar. She's there through Sunday. Phil Collins is in concert Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden. The Righteous Brothers perform at the MGM through Wednesday. Wayne Newton is at the Sands through Sunday. And you can see Smokey Robinson at the Sheraton Desert Inn through Sunday. Great lineup. Thank you, Alicia. Thank you. Allison. Oh, there's something going on. Thanks. Coming up in sports, baseball prepares for a called strike. And he is one of the hot shots of boxing. I'd say those ladies don't stand a chance. The men of General Hospital will leave you breathless, only on ABC Daytime. Well, this isn't the kind of strike you're usually used to when talking baseball. No, if we have more of these, the fans are going to be out. You had time to grab the picket signs and the golf clubs. More big league ball players, it looks like. You know, there was something magical about this baseball season. Three guys going for the single-season home run hitting record. There's some hitter in Houston named Jeff Bagwell already has 103 RBIs. And local pitcher Greg Maddux going for a record third straight Cy Young Award. But a strike could put it all to an end. Today the Players Association set a strike date of August 12th. Watch football, I guess. Yankees and Red Sox today. This is the end of a suspended game. Actually, no, this is Donald Fehr right there. This is one of the strike guys here that we're taking a look at. Today the Yankees were winners. Let's go ahead and look at the scoreboard now. Yankees 4-3 over the Red Sox in 11 innings today. The end of a suspended game from last night that was rained out. In game two, the Sox get revenge. 1-0 over the Yankees. Also, Tigers 4, Mariners 2, and Cleveland over Baltimore 7-2. Kenny Lofton of the Indians is one of the best centerfielders in the game. Here's the end of that Yankee game for you. Mike Gallego gets a base hit to right field. Speedy Bernie Williams is on first base. Watch him rip around. And the throw is done. Bernie Williams scores what proved to be the winning run in that game today between the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. All right, there was one game in the National League today. The Rockies over the Giants. Final score there was 5-1. Check out Kenny Lofton in centerfield coming up for the Indians, making this diving grab. Very good looking grab there by Kenny Lofton as the Indians win that game. And the Giants today lose to the Rockies. 5-1 was the final Giants fall, one game behind the Dodgers in the West. All right, they got to fight tomorrow night at the MGM. Oscar De La Hoya will take on Jorge Páez. De La Hoya is the pride of Southern California. He won the only gold medal for the U.S. at the last Olympic Games. De La Hoya is 13-0 right now. He's fighting for the vacant WBO lightweight title. Oscar De La Hoya joins us live now, kicking back poolside at the MGM tonight. Oscar, you weighed in 135 for this fight. Your first fight since moving up in weight class. You enjoying spending some extra time at the buffets right now? Most definitely. I feel great. I feel much stronger. And I'm just really happy that I can get in that extra meal so I can just throw more punches and be more powerful up in the ring. All right, we're going to check out some video from the news conference yesterday. Jorge Páez, your opponent. We showed this yesterday, but we got to take another look at it. Your opponent for this fight, Jorge is a little animated. You know the video that we're seeing right now at the news conference yesterday when he was flying around all over the place. Do you sort of get the opinion of this guy that he's sort of like a gnat that you like to crush sometimes? Well, he's just a fighter that I think of as just another opponent to myself. He is a class clown and he is a fighter who is an unpredictable one. So I really have to be careful up in the ring and really show him that I am made for reals and that Páez is just going to be a clown up in the ring for myself and I have to be prepared at all times. Okay, when we were putting together the video for this live interview with you, the comments from some of the gals in the newsroom were that you're just too cute to fight. What's the deal there? Well, I've been boxing for 15 years now and thank God that I haven't had my nose rearranged or my face rearranged so everything's going great and I don't know, hopefully one day, maybe after two years I can quit boxing and go into television. All right. Oscar De La Hoya, thank you very much for joining us live boxing tomorrow night at the MGM. The Posse left for Toronto this morning. They play the Argonauts tomorrow night at Sky Dome. There is no local TV for this game. ESPN2 will show it. Tape delayed Saturday 1 o'clock in the afternoon. Posse are 2-1 right now. Posse players could have checked out Andre Agassi up in Toronto today. The Canadian open for you. Slick look and return observed by Andre Agassi. Taking on David Wheaton here. Andre loses the first set but comes back to win the second. And here at match point, Wheaton hits it just a little bit too long. Andre wins the final set 7-6. It's a good match up there today. Andre advances to the quarterfinals up in Canada. David Wheaton had given them some troubles I think the last couple of times, didn't he? He had and gave them a lot of trouble today but Andre moving along up in Canada. Good for him. Alright Ron, thanks a lot. Well just ahead, the new sport of rollerblading is getting a boost. I'd say thanks to an inventive blading fan. Check it out. Hello, I'm Governor Bob Miller and I'd like to tell you about my record. Like why you tried to release 1300 criminals? I can explain. These blades zip along at 40 miles an hour. No kidding. Are they the invention of a wild, risk-taking teenager, you may ask? No, an 81-year-old man came up with the idea of strapping a two-horsepower model airplane engine to a pair of skates. The engine has enough power to pull some friends along with you and to stop you just squeeze the brake. So the inventor strapped himself onto one of the models of it. That's great for the future. Ah, it's asking for trouble. No, I do not think that people will be worried. Do not try this at home. Don't worry, we'll talk to Aaron about this. Bye. Thanks for joining us. See you tonight at 11.
