Tonight on News at Ten, officials uncover a plot to assassinate Solidarity leader Lech Voenza. A PCP bust in Compton turns up half a million dollars worth of drugs. Six bodies are discovered in the burned out remains of yesterday's fire in Philadelphia. And Los Angeles police chief Darrell Gates reacts to the arrest of his son for stealing narcotics. Drugs are killing young people and he's a prime example of just exactly that. Channel 5 News at Ten, the number one primetime news hour in Los Angeles. Now Emmy award winning Hal Fishman, Debbie Davidson, Larry McCormick, Steve Roll with sports and the entire Channel 5 News team. Good evening, the son of Los Angeles police chief Darrell Gates is in jail tonight charged with the armed robbery of a Huntington Beach drug store. 29 year old Lowell Gates is reported to be a drug addict who committed the crime to support his habit. Sam Chulin has the story. An anguished Los Angeles police chief Darrell Gates is wondering what more could he have done for his son to prevent this latest family tragedy. The 29 year old Lowell Scott Gates, an offspring of chief Gates first marriage, is in custody on suspicion of armed robbery at the Huntington Beach drug store. Chief Gates says his son has had bouts with drugs since high school has gone through rehabilitation now this. He is responsible. He's 29 years old and he has been told all his life that he is to be held responsible for the things he does and so he will get no assistance from me. According to witnesses, the young Gates came to this drug store, loaded around for a few minutes and handed one of the pharmacists a note demanding drugs. He said he was armed. He was very calm and just stood there waiting for his package. He never did get rattled or anything that I could see. One of the drug addicts chased the suspect to this neighborhood about a block away. The suspect ran to this house where his mother lives. He entered the home, he had three men pursuing him. Immediately six police officers came to the scene. They used a PA system to order him out of the home. They had their dogs waiting and they were prepared to call the SWAT team but neither were necessary. He came out a half hour later and surrendered peacefully. The young Gates is now in jail. Next stop, a court appearance for arraignment on armed robbery charges. In Huntington Beach, Sam Chuland, Channel 5, News at Ten. In Philadelphia, six people are now reported dead as firemen poke through the ruins of 60 homes burned in last night's battle between a radical group and local police. The bodies of four adults and two children were taken from the rubble that was headquarters of the group known as MOVE. The fire began after police dropped a concussion bomb on the building. The blaze was apparently fueled by kerosene stored inside the house and flammable liquid on the roof. Today over 250 people were left homeless. Many of the residents were angry saying that firefighters were slow to react. They have made me an absolute wrecked loose in my own city. My house is completely burned out through no fault of my own. I have no place to go. All I've got is what I've got on here at this time. Now to change the floor, they can't even take a shave. I don't even have a razor or nothing. The house is gone. If you have never faced hostile fire, I cannot fully describe what was going on there yesterday and I don't just mean in an urban environment anywhere. I will not commit my people and I was instructed not to commit my people with the support of both the mayor and the managing director. We are firefighters. We are not infantry men. The firefighters were being fired upon with weaponry by the MOVE group. Today Philadelphia Mayor Good promised the homeless the city would rebuild their homes. Anytime he defended the decision to drop that bomb, despite evidence, children were in the compound. They were concerned and received a tremendous amount of information that the group had built a tunnel and were in fact in possession of explosives with the potential to blow up the entire block. Leaders in other cities around the country have been quick to react to Philadelphia's use of the concussion bomb in the attempt to evict the radical group. New York Mayor Ed Koch called the act stupid. He said a similar incident could not happen in his city. Here in Los Angeles, Police Chief Gates said a device similar to the LAPD's motorized battering ram might have been a viable alternative to using a bomb. Two workmen were hospitalized today in critical condition after being seriously burned in an electrical explosion. The explosion occurred at the Starkist Tuna plant in San Pedro where the two men were working in a transformer facility on the factory's ground level. A spokesman says the workers were injured when the transformer exploded, splashing the men with hot oil causing critical burns. The result was that both of them were seriously burned. One of them we estimate had second and third degree burns over 90 percent of his body. The second patient, both of them were 50 year old males. The second one had second and third degree burns that we estimate over 40 percent of his body. The victims were treated at the scene by paramedics then transferred to the Torrance Memorial Hospital by helicopter. In San Francisco, the police bomb squad today defused a powerful pipe bomb about 20 minutes before that device would have exploded in a normally busy classroom building at San Francisco State University. A janitor found the 8 inch long pipe just before 6 this morning. The area was cleared. The bomb defused around 8 o'clock. That was only 23 minutes before it was set to go off. An anonymous caller said a second bomb was planted on campus but none was found. A motive for the incident is still not known. And sheriff's narcotics detectives in Compton today discovered enough chemicals to make nearly $500,000 worth of PCP. The raid uncovered a PCP mixing laboratory as well as gallons of chemicals used in making the illegal drugs. Detectives say the resident of the home on West 134th Street was not involved in the drug operation but his nephew, 25 year old Mark Hibler, was arrested on drug charges. That raid was conducted after the sheriff's department received reports of strong smells coming from that house. Two legal aid groups have filed suit against agencies they say are jailing juveniles in adult facilities. Included in the lawsuits are Los Angeles County's Lennox Jail, two city facilities and the Long Beach City Jail. Attorneys filing the suit claim that California leads the country in the number of children held in adult jails. What we're saying is that two things need to be done. First, the decision when you pick a kid up as to whether the kid needs to be securely confined or not has to be made. We need to have specific detention criteria used. Right now there's a shoot from the hip reaction of locking a kid in jail. Those resources need to be spent on civilized and appropriate alternatives which are not damaging to the children and are not unnecessarily hazardous to their lives as well as their limbs and their liberty. At a separate news conference Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block admitted that some of the charges made in the lawsuit may be true but are not as serious as they are made out to be. Ideally it would be nice to keep youngsters out of jail but what is the alternative to those who constitute a threat to the community. They must be kept in a secure environment and until there is an alternative to jail I would suppose that jail is the appropriate place to put them. Sheriff Block says the California Youth Authority regularly inspects the county's jails and has not informed the county of any violations in housing juvenile suspects. Law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty were honored during memorial ceremonies in La Mirada. We have more from Mike Potula. The torch has been carried more than 300 miles by officers honoring their fallen comrades. The presentation opened the annual ceremony honoring police officers slain in Los Angeles County in the past year. The memorial ceremony this year is being held at the La Mirada Civic Theater, the Sheriff's Academy where it had been held in the past has moved from East LA to Whittier and a new permanent memorial is being built there. This year three names are being added to the memorial officer Duane Johnson of the Los Angeles Police Department, reserve deputy Lloyd Brooks and deputy David Holguin of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Officer Johnson was shot and killed last December during a hold up at a Chinatown jewelry store. Deputy Brooks was killed September 1st as he directed traffic at the scene of a rescue and deputy Holguin was gunned down four days later when he stopped to help a small boy wandering along Florence Avenue in Belle. The keynote speaker, associate U.S. Attorney General Lowell Jensen notes that the sacrifices made by officers like Holguin, Johnson and Brooks are having an impact on crime. The first time we have had successive years where the crime rate of this country has actually been reduced. The families of the officers being honored say it was a job they wanted to do. We talked about it him and I many times and he told me you know that he would be as careful as he could but that was the name of the game and when your number is up it's up. Ceremonial wreaths were laid in front of the monument and then taps was played. Johnson Brooks and Holguin joined 335 other officers killed in the line of duty in Los Angeles County. In Washington the Reagan administration today agreed to resume direct talks with Nicaragua but only if the Sandinistas show they are serious about a peace settlement. Earlier peace talks you'll recall broke off last January. The White House also announced that President Reagan will meet with the Salvadoran President Jose Napoleon Duarte on Thursday. Duarte and President Reagan last met one year ago. Secretary of State George Shultz today met with the Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko for arms talks in Vienna, Austria. The two leaders met at the Soviet embassy. Their talks lasted for six hours, twice as long as originally scheduled. But later Mr. Shultz told reporters that the talks focused on arms control, in particular the Geneva negotiations. Our discussions were useful and they were comprehensive and they were detailed. Again, I think it was lengthy, useful and a worthwhile meeting. Basically Mr. Shultz revealed very little. In addition, the spokesman for Gromyko said today in order for arms talks to progress the so-called Star Wars space defense system must also be included. The pilot of an F-20 Tiger Shark fighter jet was killed today during a practice flight. The accident happened in eastern Canada while the plane was being put through exercises in preparation for the Paris Air Show. That airplane is manufactured by the Northrop Corporation as a less costly alternative to the United States Air Force's F-18. An investigation of today's crash is underway. Debbie. With a strike deadline just three days away, United Airlines and the union representing 4,900 pilots reported no progress after today's negotiations. Those negotiations aimed at settling on a new contract. At issue in the talks is a proposed two-tiered salary scale that would pay new pilots less than those already flying for the nation's largest airline. The strike, threatened for midnight Friday, could affect more than 1,500 daily United flights. But airline officials say that 500 pilots have been trained to fly United's planes in the event of a walkout. Democrats on the House Budget Committee tonight reached agreement on a spending proposal for 1986. The Democrats' plan preserved Social Security cost of living increases while freezing military spending at the current level. A similar plan by the Republican-led Senate restrained Social Security benefit increases, a move that House Speaker Tip O'Neill says is wrong. You're harming the majority of the senior citizens who made America great and they think it's extremely unfair to again hurt that group who had been hurt before. The Democrats' plan meets the Republican-controlled Senate's goal of cutting $56 billion from that federal deficit. Hal? A member of the California State Board of Equalization gave Los Angeles area taxpayers today an opportunity they've never had before, a chance to present their tax problems directly to him. As a board member, Conway Collins is one of California's top tax officials. He opened his office so people could bypass the bureaucratic red tape associated with paying taxes. The first thing and the only thing I promised to do is to listen to the problem and to try to get to the bottom of it. And I think we've been able to do that. Now in some situations we've actually been able to get a refund for somebody. Today's open office meetings were held at the Van Nuys Chamber of Commerce. Collins will do it all again tomorrow at the Litton Employees Federal Credit Union in Woodland Hills. That brings us to tonight's Consumer Trends and Larry McCormick. The courageous man. Yes, he's trying to help consumers. A test of his courage will be to see if he does it again next year. Okay, hello. Consumer Trends, of course, brought to you by National Lumber and tonight a look at a new trend in pet care, home tutoring for the family dog. Obedient classes for the family pet have long been very popular, but now some instructors are offering home service as well. For example, Teton here and his owner are now on their second home lesson. Their instructor is Sandy Miller, whose company is called Tender Dog Tutor. She believes in teaching dogs to want to behave. I firmly believe that really the owner is the biggest problem. And by coming to the home rather than sending the dog away, it really gets the owner trained so that they know what they're doing with the dog. The other thing too is that when a dog has problems, the problems are usually at home. The chewing, the digging, the jumping on people, the wetting in the house. And to send the dog away really doesn't accomplish that nearly as well as it does when you go to the home and work directly with the problems at the home. Miller also uses a lightweight leash for gentle reprimands. She says the cost of the home service varies depending on the dog's individual needs. Ms. Miller adds that to learn the basics of good behavior, most dogs take about a six-week course of lessons. After that, owners continue to work with their pets on an individual basis. And locally, four clergymen from Grace Community Church in Sun Valley are on trial for malpractice in the case of a church member who committed suicide. Today, the victim's parents tried to show that other church members have taken their own lives. Brian Jenkins reports. The senior pastor at the Grace Community Church claimed last week that when 24-year-old Kenneth Nalley shot himself in 1979, it was the first time in at least 10 years a member of the church had committed suicide. Edward Barker, the attorney representing Nalley's parents in their suit against the church, said that just wasn't true, and he called two witnesses to back up his claim. One, the sister of a young Grace parishioner who also shot himself. The other, a pastor at another evangelical church who knew a third suicide victim in the Grace congregation. Barker also called Nalley's father, Walter, back to the stand to reiterate his claim that Grace pastors kept him in the dark about his son's suicidal tendencies. If you had known of his various conversations with various church pastors, where he talked about trying again or being sorry he'd failed or still wanting to do it, would you have considered his suicidality to be a meaningful threat? Yes. Attorneys for the church say they'll ask the judge on Wednesday to dismiss the suit, arguing that there is no legal duty for pastoral counselors to make psychiatric referrals and that even if there were such a duty, Kenneth Nalley's parents have not proved the counselors at Grace Community Church were negligent. But if the judge turns down the motion to dismiss, the defense attorneys say, they'll take at least a week presenting their case. Brian Schenken, CNN, Glendale, California. Nutritionalist however insists that the satisfaction of thousands of customers proves the safety of their product. Good time now to go to Larry McCormick. Take a look at tonight's health and fitness report. Okay, thank you. You know most cold remedies contain two ingredients, an adihistamine to dry up secretions and a decongestant to shrink blood vessels in the lining of the nose. That combination is okay for most people but it is potentially unsafe for people who have high blood pressure. According to the publication American Family Physician, since decongestants shrink swollen nasal membranes by constricting their blood vessels, they can constrict blood vessels elsewhere in the body too. For the hypertensive that raises the possibility of stroke or heart damage from elevated blood pressure. As a decongestant, better for hypertensives to use nose drops or a nasal spray where it acts locally. People who work out regularly are well aware of the importance of fluid intake to compensate for sweat loss. Less obvious but equally critical is the effect of dehydration that results in a reduction of blood volume due to strenuous exercise. It's important that there be a large volume of blood circulating through the kidneys during exercise to wash away breakdown products released from the muscles. Now if those substances clog the kidneys, you probably pass very little urine and there may be blood in it. If allowed to continue, permanent kidney damage could result. So stay hydrated during strenuous exercise, very important. On the other hand, for epileptics, too much water could be extremely harmful. Dr. James White, Stanford University School of Medicine, cites the cases of three epileptic women whose seizures were under control medically until they went on a fad diet which caused them drinking 8 to 12 cups, that's about 2 to 3 quarts of water a day. When they did that, their seizures started again. There is, says Dr. White, no reason to drink massive amounts of water even if you're not epileptic, but especially if you want to avoid it if you are. And that's tonight's report. Hal? Okay, now you know, if you've ever been ill, mental attitude is considered an important factor in getting well. Well, reporter Nancy Laffey has news about a local artist who is helping to enhance the optimistic outlook. Hospitals don't have to be bland and sterile looking, at least that's the feeling at the Medical Center of North Hollywood. Officials invited well-known mural artist John Fite to spruce up their plain walls to cheer up patients. His brightly colored murals depicting nature decorate hallways, waiting rooms, lobbies, and even an x-ray room. For rainbows, animals, trees, and bright blue skies. John Fite says his murals help heal patients emotionally and mentally while they're healing physically. I don't know if you've read Zen and the R-Motorcycle Maintenance or aware of Gauguin and all those things, but those have to do with quality of life. I don't think hospitals should be hard, sterile, white, and stress-filled. The response among patients has been very positive. I love them, but I just noticed that today, you know, I had to stop and look at it. I'm really surprised. What kind of effect do they have on you? Does it sort of cheer you up? Oh yes. They have quality. AMI officials have liked John Fite's artwork so much they've invited him to paint murals at two more hospitals, one in Garden Grove and one in South Bay. And they also hope this idea will catch on nationwide. In North Hollywood, Nancy Lafay, Channel 5, News at Ten. A state trooper is shot to death at point blank range. In Montana, 20-year-old Dan Nichols has been convicted on charges of kidnapping an Olympic skier last summer. Nichols and his father were accused of kidnapping the young woman to keep her as a sex mate for the younger Nichols in a remote mountain area. We have more in this report. The jury took 11 hours to decide the three main questions of the case. Did Danny Nichols kidnap Olympic skier and target shooter Carrie Swenson on a remote mountain trail last July? Did he deliberately shoot her during the ordeal? And could he be held accountable for the death of a rescuer, even though Nichols' father testified it was he, not the boy, who killed Ellen Goldstein? As the jury labored, some reporters played cards in the courtroom. Others prepared stories. The sheriff, who captured the Nichols' after a five-month search, paced. While one floor above, the jury methodically worked toward a decision. Finally, it returned the verdict. Danny Nichols sat dispassionately while the court clerk read the decision. Crime of kidnapping? Guilty. Delivered homicide? Not guilty. Aggravated assault? Not guilty. Assault? Guilty. It was not an acquittal, but considering that the murder charge and the more serious assault charge were not proven, Nichols' attorney said his client could breathe a sigh of relief. It is very greatly relieved that he is not found guilty of homicide, and for the reasons that he set forth in the trial, he did not feel that he was responsible for it. Unger said the jury agreed with his contention that the younger Nichols was more of a witness than an accomplice to the Goldstein shooting. Nichols' father is scheduled to stand trial on the same charges in June. Ben Cain, CNN, Virginia City, Montana. In North Carolina, four men are being questioned in the connection with the death of a state trooper. It seems that the trooper, a 23-year veteran, was found dead in his patrol car. The windshield had been shattered by bullets. When last heard from, the trooper radioed into headquarters. He was investigating two vans with Maryland license plates. No motive for the murder has yet been determined. A lawyer for convicted rapist Gary Dotson today pressed for a new trial for his client two days after Dotson's prison sentence was commuted. Dotson says he'd rather not capitalize on his fame, but as Jill Dougherty reports, Dotson also says he can't afford not to. After a night of celebrating his freedom, Gary Dotson said he'll meet with the woman whose testimony sent him to prison six years ago. Dotson said he plans to talk with Kathy Crowell, Web Wednesday in New York, on national television. He just didn't know which network yet. It's hard to be hired on her, especially now. I mean, she's gone through a lot, and I think she's really embarrassed herself publicly. And I don't know, I think it took more out of her to do that than it took me to forgive her. Dotson has received numerous offers to make a movie or write a book about his experience. When asked if he's trying to exploit the situation, he said, If I didn't have to, I wouldn't. I really don't like to open myself up like this, but I believe in order to take care of all the legal fees and stuff that I've developed, it's the only way I can afford it now. Dotson's mother Barbara agrees. I think we should be kind to each other. Whatever we need to get, you know. I think it's a good start. Dotson has no firm plans for a job, but he does want to start a foundation to provide legal assistance for what he called the next Gary Dotson. People who have been imprisoned for crimes they didn't commit. That includes rape and other offenses. His nightmare, Dotson said, is over to an extent, but he wants to erase the rape conviction still on his record. Joe Zorny, CNN, Country Club Hills, Illinois. Locally, hundreds of celestial star gazers turned out tonight to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Griffith Park Observatory. Officials say that over the past five decades, some 41 million people have visited the center. The festivities include special programs and exhibits and a display involving starlight from 50 light years away, an observatory spokesman says. Well, it's our 50th anniversary. It's our golden anniversary. So we look for a star that's 50 light years away. Since light travels at a constant speed, at that star we use the speed of light as a measure of distance. So it's 50 times the distance that light travels in one year away. So we picked that star because it started out when we opened. Herring represented the state of Texas in the annual beauty pageant. She emigrated from Mexico when she was nine years old. She became an American citizen at the age of 14. Herring now goes on to represent the United States in the annual Miss Universe beauty pageant. We are very proud to report tonight that KTLA Channel 5 is being honored this week and next with an exhibit of this nation's rich heritage at Universal Studios. Now the exhibition is part of the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Broadcasting. A kinescope of early KTLA programs and news coverage was screened tonight, preceded by a panel discussion that I was involved in along with others from KTLA's past and present. Three words kept cropping up tonight, tradition, innovation, and credibility. Long form coverage of news as we saw on this tape here, and we just kind of built the tradition of going out, getting in the community, becoming involved, KTLA developing all of its resources. And over the years it developed into a very powerful public servant in Los Angeles and everybody felt if something happens, tune to KTLA. When you think about a television station, very often you think about their news image, and that kind of colors the entire image that the public has of the television station itself. And we've been watching KTLA in this community to this very day, whenever there is a breaking news story. Whenever something happens, everyone tunes to KTLA to see what's going on. There were a number of events that I could just recount in history in watching KTLA. You could really tell the whole story of television news in Los Angeles by looking at old tapes of KTLA because they were first on the scene, and it's been my privilege in the last four years to continue that tradition. The Rose Parade coverage is still done in a way by KTLA that no one else can compete with, and there are four stations competing at the same time, and we always come out ahead. Innovation in technology, from the telecopter on, stereo and the ability to simulcast in a foreign language. The exhibit remains on display at Universal Studios, and a week from tonight, more than four hours of KTLA archive footage and video achievements will be screened for the public. Still to come on News at Ten tonight, an earthquake hits near Palm Springs. Debbie's going to have the weather outlook for us. That quake was centered about 25 miles southwest of the resort city, and it occurred shortly after 1030 this morning, measured 3.9 on the Richter scale. Residents of the area said they could feel the building shaking, but there were no reports of any damage. Well, let's see if we have a shaky weather forecast, or are you going to be specific and tell us what's going to happen? No, we've changed, Hal. Just last night, it was just last night that I mentioned that the high pressure would stay with us until something came in to move it along. A little shaky about that. Yes, we've tied it in. That something has arrived. It's a developing storm over Nevada. Now that low to the east will result in extensive night and morning low clouds in the coastal valleys and cooler temperatures. However, by the weekend, we should see things start to warm up a bit with less extensive marine clouds. Today's west coast satellite picture shows there are still low clouds off the coast of southern California. They will get the green light to move farther on shore tonight and tomorrow morning, keeping us 5 to 10 degrees cooler tomorrow. The coast to coast satellite picture shows a bright swirl of clouds over the central plains. Those, along with the clouds stretching across the lower Mississippi Valley and the western Great Lakes, produce showers and thunderstorms. Rain also fell over much of Idaho. It was another warm day today for Miami. Cool weather is moving into the northern plains. And here at home, Los Angeles hit 82, following last night's low of 59. Tomorrow will start out a bit cloudier, but the sun should break through in the afternoon. So highs are expected to hit just 80 at San Gabriel. It will stay in the 70s for the rest of the valley areas. Lows tonight will be from 53 to about 56. Now the beaches may only have partial afternoon clearing in the southern areas tomorrow. Highs range from 66 at Santa Monica to about 74 at Long Beach and Santa Ana. The deserts will have some clouds at times, but it will be mostly fair, with gusty winds developing to 25 miles an hour. Palm Springs was the hottest spot in the country today at 100 degrees. 93 should be their high tomorrow. And in the mountains, a more pleasant 66 degrees. Well, for an hour this afternoon, we had first-stage smog alerts in the East San Gabriel Valley and the Walnut-Pamona Valley. They were called off about 4 o'clock. Tomorrow should have good air quality in all areas of the basin. So tomorrow's forecast is our summer litany, night and morning low clouds with sunny afternoons. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s, with lows again in the 50s. Well, tonight's slide is remarkable in its clarity. Richard Turk, Jr. of La Mirada, took the shot of Mount Shasta reflected in Heart Lake up in northern California. If you have a slide for us, mark it with your name and address and send it on to KTLA News at 10, P.O. Box 500, Los Angeles 90078. So we had expected things to gradually get warmer as the week wore on. Low pressure, a storm developing over Nevada means we're going to have our marine layer back. That's going to keep us cool, morning clouds, sunny afternoons. But we should get back into that sunny warming trend again by the weekend. You are exactly right, because through the marvel of electronic devices, namely the telephone, I just checked Los Angeles International Airport while you were giving us the forecast, and there is a 300-foot ceiling right now at the airport. Bases, they said, to the west were 200 feet. So if you're heading out tonight, you might want to check just to make sure that operations are continuing. They are continuing right now. Anyway, the Olympics came to Los Angeles once again today, but as we see in this report, these games celebrate the fine art of grocery baggage. It was dubbed the Olympics of grocery packing. Fourteen of the best supermarket baggers in California went head-to-head, or rather bag-to-bag, trying to stuff 38 grocery items into bags in record time without crushing the bread. Some of the baggers even had their own cheering sections. The baggers were judged on speed, bagging technique, and style. The competition was fierce. The 14 contestants were soon whittled down to three finalists. This was to be the supreme test. The winner was Troy Spence, a 21-year-old grocery bagger at Bond Supermarket in Orange. He received what else? A grocery bag trophy and 1,000 big ones. Even the check itself was big. Troy, did you really think you were going to win? Oh, I had hunches. I thought I was being close, but I thought I had a chance. Now, what is your style? Style? Symmetry. I guess symmetry and speed. East Coast champion Troy Spence will have one more month to sharpen his bagging skills. That's when he'll be taking on East Coast champion Karen Coz-Petino, and only one will become national bagging champion. In Chevy at Hills, Nancy Raffy, Channel 5, News at Ten. MUSIC Well, tonight's big sports after Saturday's 17-point loss to the Lakers, the Nuggets said the only way they could beat the Lakers would be to play a perfect game. Well, tonight at the Forum, Denver not only played perfectly, but it also snapped LA's 23 home game winning streak. That was a long one. The Lakers were trying to keep the string intact. Rambas from Careem Lakers by two early in the first. But the Nuggets knew it was their night. Alex English was hot, so hot he poured in 40 points tonight. The Lakers took a seven-point lead midway through the first. Magic to Michael Cooper on the cupolu. But in the second quarter was a different game. Issel on the fast break for two of his 22. Denver by nine. Now watch the play tonight. Magic made an incredible shot, but to no avail. He traveled. Mike Evans kept the Lakers wishing for more time. A three-point shot. Lakers still trailed by five. Mike McGee tried to spark the Lakers with his version of a three-point shot from midcourt. But Denver just poured it on in the final minutes. English got the right bounce, and so did the Nuggets. Denver evened the series at one game apiece. Game three Friday in Denver. By the way, Careem was held to a mirror. 13 points this evening. The other conference final series resumed on the parquet floor. Andrew Toney gave the Sixers a 12-point lead with the jumper right here. But the Celtics cut that margin before the half. Danny Ainge to Kevin McHale. Off the break. The best six man in the league. In the third quarter, the Sixers increased their lead to seven. Maurice Cheeks rolled to the hoop. But the fourth period was colored green. Larry Bird with a beautiful scoop for two of his 24. When the Sixers overplayed Bird, he found the open man. In this case, it was Danny Ainge. The green wave made it two straight over Philly. Julia Serving had 22 for the Sixers and a losing cause. Well, the Angels' rough road trip through the Eastern Division continued in Toronto this evening. The two division leaders went at it. The Halos got out fast, but just couldn't hold it. The Blue Jays leading by a run, Bobby Gritch went to work on Doyle Alexander, a true run shot to left. Number three for Gritch on the year. In the third, Rod Drew wristed one to the opposite field. It carried out and became Rod's first homer in almost one year. It was 3-1 Angels. But the Angels just couldn't stand prosperity. In the fifth, four players converged on the Maso Garcia pop-up. Gritch couldn't come up with it. That sent the Blue Jays. A couple of batters later, Lloyd Mosby touched up Jim Slayton for a three-bagger up the gap. That brought home Garcia and Rance Mullenix. The game was knotted at three. The Jays won it in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Garcia grounded a single left. Ernie Witt and Jesse Barfield came in. That was that. Bill Crottle finished up for his seventh save. Same two teams tomorrow will have all the highlights. Elsewhere, the Mariners and Royals pick up wins, as did the same for the Tigers and Yankees. And rounding out wins, you see there, 6-3 Oakland over Milwaukee and Chicago, down Cleveland 2-1. So, here's how it looks. The Angels lead Chicago by one game. The Twins by two and a half. In the ravine tonight, the Cubs drew first blood on the Dodgers. Fernando Valenzuela wild-pitched home. Gary Matthews. It was one-nothing Chicago. The Dodgers tied the game on a sacrifice fly. Then Mike Marshall dull-homed Ken Landrow. The Dodgers led Rick Sutcliffe and the Cubs 2-1. In the second, the Cubs went to work on Fernando again. When Matthews ground a roll of Mario-Elano Duncan's arm, the Cubs led it 4-2. Fernando was on his own worst enemy. In this game, he issued a bases-loaded walk to Keith Moorland. That made it 5-2. The Dodgers reached Sutcliffe for a run in the fourth. Pinch hitter Terry Whitfield delivered a single. Mike Socia scored. It was 6-3, Cubs. The Cubs broke the Dodgers back when light-hitting Larry Bowe delivered a single off reliever Steve Howe. That brought in two more runs and the Cubs were on their way. They beat the Dodgers 8-3. Same two teams tomorrow night. Now, before the game, we caught up with former Dodger Davey Lopes. It seems Lopes is on a collision course with a Major League record. His own. He's stolen 33 straight bases without being caught. Five more and he breaks his own mark at 38. I'd be lying to myself and to everyone else if I said I'm not thinking about it, but it probably doesn't have as much importance now as it did when I was younger and the fact that it did happen and accumulate all in one year and now it's accumulation of three years, but it's still gratifying to know that my percentage is still high and I'm still capable of stealing a base here and there. Indeed he can. Rounding out the National League scoreboard, the Padres won again. The Mets and Giants also won by the same score. And the Phillies and the Astros are out so it stands now. The Padres lead the Astros by a game and a half. The Dodgers are two and a half off the pace. Now in Edmonton this evening, a wild NHL semifinal game with Yari Curry ripping in the go-ahead goal against Chicago. But the Blackhawks netted three power play scores in the first. Steve Larmer puts Chicago ahead. The Oilers shook loose in the second with four straight goals marking eighth year to Mark Messier. Then two outstanding shots from the great one Wayne Gretzky. Number one came on a quick retreat. Then the next Gretzky like a dueling gunslinger turning and firing Edmonton took a three game two lead over the Hawks. Philly also went up three to two in its series with Quebec. And that's it for a very busy night in SportsHow. Yes indeed it was and that's also it for News at Ten for tonight. Thanks for joining us.
