from getting a withdrawal from this ATM and a mother throws a birthday party for her daughter's 18 year old friend with strippers and beer The news at 11 starts now With jetty and Ola and Kelly day this is coin 6 news at 11 We are expecting the first winter blast of the season that's bad news for most but for some It also means it's time to catch cash in good evening. Thanks for being with us tonight. I'm Kelly day I'm Jeff, you know, it's 11 o'clock and here's the latest, you know, it's not only beginning to look like Christmas It's starting to feel like it overnight temperatures will be dipping below freezing for the next week and in the daytime It won't get much warmer or in when it joins us from the cold streets of Portland tonight Oh horn how well cold is it out there tonight? There's no question It's very very cold out here. And if you happen to live out here in the streets, well, it's even colder The holiday brings more than warm cheer Oh, I see the train go by Not far from the Fremont Bridge beyond the railroad tracks Tom Smith climbs under a sleeping bag and hides behind a shopping cart his home even on the coldest of nights the street Because I was born and raised in Minnesota where snow wouldn't taste cold Yeah This is this is summer weather here For Tom and everyone else who lives out here on the streets each night this coming week will grow colder and colder But not everyone in Portland seems to mind When the temperatures dip below freezing Mike Vega gets very busy But the Vancouver plumber doesn't mind I'm gonna catch up on my sleep tonight because we're gonna be working late as soon as those frozen pipes yet At this Northwest coffee shop the lattes and hot cocos seem extremely popular But when the weather gets really cold look out, it's not bad for us. They still sit outside They get drinks and they still sit outside. So They don't get too cold. They must warm up here back near the train tracks. Tom doesn't worry about warming up He says he's lived through at least 20 winters in this very spot another year Another year, that's all The temperature may drop but it appears at least on this street that won't affect anyone's spirit Obviously the homeless shelters provide some help but on these bitter cold nights Not everyone gets in and believe it or not Jeff. Not everyone even wants to help Or the Winnick outside tonight. Thanks horn now PGE tells us tonight Don't expect any interruptions in power because of the cold but the supply situation is very bad We're not getting any food or water or anything. We're not getting any food or water We're not getting any interruptions in power because of the cold but the supply situation isn't a delicate balance and California suppliers who we've come to depend on in winter months have come up short this year if we lose any more Suppliers say a plant goes down in California or elsewhere. It is possible. We may have a shortage Meanwhile both PGE and Pacific Power are running Conservation campaigns to get people to be aware of the situation and more importantly play a part in improving it We've got to be sure that all the plant is there now if it's not there I think customers just need to be doing their bit and and if they can conserve some electricity You know any time over the next week that is a valuable contribution to keeping everyone happy everyone safe The energy crisis is hitting Californians hard But it has some wondering where all the power has gone one expert found that the so-called crisis may be manufactured by the power plants themselves holding back electricity to raise prices There's good reason to believe or good reason for the government to investigate whether they were holding back California power companies were regulated for the first time this year and some customers saw their bills triple America is still waiting now for three Florida courts to rule and tell us who is going to be the next president of the United States Florida's Supreme Court could rule anytime now on an appeal from Al Gore's attorney to order selective manual recounts of 14,000 disputed ballots in Palm Beach and Dade counties Gore's lawyers say the lower court judge never even looked at the ballots an attorney for George W Bush argued there's no evidence that any voter was denied the right to vote Not far away another court is hearing a seminal county case brought by a wealthy Democrat Who wants to toss out 15,000 absentee ballots because Republicans put missing ID numbers on ballot applications A similar case in Martin County seeks to disqualify 10,000 votes Tomorrow Florida's legislature meets a special session to appoint a slate of 25 electors That's just in case the courts don't rule in time a Portland retiree got so wound up in the presidential election He nearly wound up in the hospital Alvin Batiste has been so involved with the goings-on in Florida They got a little sidetracked when it was time to take his vitamins I happen to look down and saw her one of her medicines. I said, oh my gosh in Mine's next to it And I says, oh my gosh, I've taken this medicine So I told her and so she at first she's you did what nice. I took your medicine Well, Alvin has low blood pressure, but he took his wife's high blood pressure Diabetes pills. Well, he called over to the state health department And told them and they said just monitor your blood sugar and your blood pressure I need plenty of carbohydrates Alvin's blood pressure did drop for several hours. He's okay now Just like the election Alvin says this is an experience. He'll never forget Two local teenagers have died within a week of each other and tonight investigators suspect a popular cold drug May have contributed to both of those deaths It is the cold tablet called coracidum D In large doses that acts as a stimulant and that's why some teenagers take it to get high Pharmacists say overdoses of the drugs or drugs like it could cause a heart attack stroke or psychological disturbances Experts are warning parents to talk to their children and keep an eye out for the abnormally high use of cold medications The two deaths are still being investigated Well, they want him out of their neighborhood But a convicted child molester in Hillsboro says he's a drug addict They want him out of their neighborhood, but a convicted child molester in Hillsboro says he is not a threat Albert Rogers was convicted of attempting to molest a young boy 10 years ago He got off probation and supervision four years ago, and he has kept a clean record last month Hillsboro police notified neighbors Rogers was living in their neighborhood and now many residents want him to leave And I've done all my parole all my probation everything family here and if they want to know something else I got just a few months to live because I got terminal cancer in the lungs and they ain't got to worry about you being out here. Well neighbors are holding a community meeting tomorrow night at seven o'clock at Moo Berry Elementary. They want Rogers or any sex offender who moves into their neighborhood to know that residents will be watching their every move. His apartment was going up in flames and stacks of newspapers inside may have cost a Vancouver man his life. The fire broke out on the 15th floor of the Smith Tower, Vancouver's tallest building. Residents say the man who lived there was a pack rat, 69 year old Bob Buchanan. They call him airplane Bob because he knew so much about airplanes in the Second World War. Bob Buchanan collected newspapers and they were stacked chest high throughout the apartment. It was just an accident waiting to happen with all that stuff up there. There seems to be an awful lot of newspaper up there. We heard the report from one of the firefighters suggest that there may be up to 20 yards of newspaper debris in that apartment. Firefighters had to clear a way through those newspapers just to get inside to investigate. The good news is the fire didn't spread to other apartments or other floors. Firefighters say it could have been a lot worse especially considering the fire was on the top floor. It presents a lot of challenges for our firefighters because quite honestly they have to hump all of the material 14 floors up, stage on the 14th floor and then attack the fire from the 14th to the 15th. So manpower intensive and you get a real aerobic workout going up 14 floors. Investigators say the fire started near the kitchen stove but they don't know how yet. Once again Bob Buchanan lost his life in that fire. So this is a very good reminder for all of us tonight. Before you go to bed check those Christmas tree lights, any candles you might have burning. Make sure you put them out very well before you go to bed and also make sure you water your Christmas tree every day so it doesn't dry out too much and become even more of a dangerous fire hazard. A train and a semi truck collide in Marion County. Apparently the driver of the tractor trailer rig filled with bark dust stopped at the tracks and then proceeded to move on. Just as Bobby Moore was going over the tracks that's when the red flashing lights and arms came down to signal a train was coming. Moore says though he didn't see any of that. His trailer was just about over the tracks when the train smashed right into it flipping the truck around. The Union Pacific train was pulling several antique railroad cars at the time. The conductor was not hurt. Moore was tossed around a bit. He was taken to Albany General Hospital but tonight he's listed in good condition. Measure five goes into effect tomorrow affecting everyone who buys firearms at Oregon gun shows. Rick Rial just west of Salem is ready for the first test of measure five. The town's semi-annual gun show runs Saturday and Sunday and for the first time all gun buyers and sellers have to give their addresses and serial number of the weapon involved to state police. Police check the buyer's background and if the sale goes through they keep the records for five years and it's that record-keeping that many critics say they don't like. Well you don't hear people talking about going down to Portland's Rose Quarter unless there's a sporting event or concert going on. These planners are now hoping to change that. The city hired a company from back east to redesign the Rose Quarter to make it more vibrant. Tonight neighbors hood some of the proposals for the first time. One includes completely junking and tearing down Memorial Coliseum. Another puts a new baseball stadium on the site. The whole idea is to bring more people into the Rose Quarter and make it more vibrant. Whatever strategy neighbors and experts come up with it will all be presented to the City Council in March. Ever dropped a quarter in a stranger's parking meter when it was about to run out? Well most would call that a random act of kindness but city officials believe it or not say that's a ticketable offense. Are you tired of driving out to the Yamhill wine country to sample Oregon's best? Well we've got a solution coming up. It wasn't your typical teenage birthday party and Ohio mother goes all out. She got the kids everything from the strippers to the alcohol and she got in trouble. Nordstrom reports lower sales last month that stores open at least a year. That's just the latest bad news and what has been a difficult year for the Seattle based clothing retailer. It reported a loss of more than three million dollars last quarter. The stock price is taking quite a beating now and the company canceled some plans to build new stores. The president Blake Nordstrom says that he doesn't want to sell he's trying to do everything to return the stores to profitability but he says he's aware that the patience of the customers and the shareholders at this point is definitely wearing thin. Next time you see someone's meter running out just keep walking because if you drop a coin in you're breaking the law. City officials say that that defeats the meaning of the short-term metered parking namely rapidly turnover they want it to be rapidly turned over so that new customers can come to the downtown merchants. Earlier this week someone in a pink tutu with fairy wings was walking around plugging meters before the parking patrol showed up. Of course that's a very generous act but officials say you will still get a ticket if the inspectors think that you have over parked. It wasn't pink I was wearing a green tutu. Yeah that was me. Well we have a recall to tell you about tonight nearly 100,000 scooters are being voluntarily recalled because of handlebar problems that can cause riders to lose control. About 90,000 Kent Kicken mini scooters are being recalled because the handles can come out of the steering column about 7500 racer x2o scooters from cash and gold have a joint between the handlebars that can break. So for the Kent scooters you can get a free replacement handlebar and securing pins by calling the company toll-free number and cash and gold racers must be replaced totally and there's their phone number or return the scooter to the store for a refund and of course for more information like we do with all these recalls they are posted on our website at coin.com. Well if you think it's cold out there now you better wait till this weekend because this is nothing. Thirty-six degrees underneath a thin overcast of Portland. Dew point 32 so our relative humidity is 86%. A light east wind in the barometer is on the rise. Temperatures around the rest of the region. Already many locations below freezing or at freezing. They're at freezing at Vancouver. Thirty-one at Hillsborough. Thirty-one at McVinville. Thirty at Aurora. Down to 29 degrees in Salem. They stay chilly down there all day long today. They had a lot of fog and only broke out of the fog for an hour or so. Thirty-six the current temperature again at Portland. Thirty-five in the Dalles. Twenty-seven at La Grande. Twenty-five in Baker City. They also had low clouds and fog and that kept them down in the twenties today for their high temperatures. Thirty-four at La Grande. Thirty at Pendleton. Forty-one with brief sunshine in Salem. No sunshine just fog in Eugene. They get up to 35 degrees today. That's all they could muster. Forty-four the high today in Portland. Thirty-one the low. Well below the average of 36. Record low 17 set back in 1972. The freezing level this afternoon just below 9500 feet and sunrise tomorrow morning just before 740 a.m. Lots of low clouds and fog again in the Columbia Basin but also lots of low clouds and fog in the southern half of the Willamette Valley and that kept temperatures down in places like Aurora, Salem and Eugene. Eugene again only getting into the mid-thirties this afternoon and that is nothing compared to some of the cold weather we're going to see. It's this air mass up here. It will modify as it comes down. We're expecting it to come through sometime on Sunday. So as we go through the weekend we should see some light rain, maybe even some sleep mixed in on Saturday and then the front comes through on Sunday and we see the arc to cold all next week. So for tomorrow along the coast we're looking at mostly cloudy skies. Same story in the western valleys that will probably start out with low clouds and fog and the low clouds and fog will linger in the southern half and because of that temperatures down there will be awfully chilly in the Cascades. Mostly cloudy skies with low clouds and fog along the eastern slope. Freezing level at 7000 ft in the gorge. We'll see low clouds and fog in the eastern half and because of that temperatures will only be in the thirties tomorrow afternoon. Same story not only for the Columbia River Basin for the Grand Rhond Valley as well as the Baker Valley and they will see temperatures tomorrow only in the thirties and twenties just like they saw today here in Portland and Vancouver. We're looking at areas of dense fog, a low of 30° and for tomorrow mostly cloudy high 43 and that seven day planner again it's not so much the snow that's the big story. It's that arctic cold that arrives on Sunday will have a high Saturday night of 37 for Sunday and temperatures will fall during the day on Sunday into the twenties and it stays chilly right on through the middle of next week. My goodness. All right thanks for the warning John. Well some would be thieves had their funds spoiled after Boston police stopped their bid to steal an ATM machine from a credit union. Investigators say the thieves tried to make off with a whole machine from the state employees credit union early Thursday morning. Police say the thieves wrapped a chain around the ATM attached the chain to their car and pulled the machine right through the glass door in the front lobby. Well luckily police spotted the robbers before they got away with the ATM. I don't think they'd be too hard to spot but the robbers managed to get away leaving the ATM in the street. Tonight they have the machine but the suspects remain at large. A woman in Cleveland Ohio is in big trouble tonight. She threw a birthday party that was more like a bachelor party. The 41 year old woman Anne Salazar allowed a stripper to perform at a birthday party for her daughter's male friend. Well the birthday boy turned 18 which makes him old enough for the stripper but not for the alcohol that was present at the bash and police say they also smelled marijuana. Kids over with cake and ice cream that's what we consider a birthday party and friends but no alcohol. She's totally wrong for buying alcohol for the kids and a stripper. Salazar was charged with a felony that could get her up to a year in prison. Hello everybody nice seeing you again it's going to be a good old-fashioned headbanger at high noon Saturday in Eugene. Number one Jesuit against third-ranked North Medford for the state football championship and what you'll see is Jesuits high-powered style against North Medford's grinder of a running game. Number 10 is Jesuits Mike Haas just before Thanksgiving. Haas scored seven touchdowns against Central Catholic. Jesuit quarterback Mike McGrain hooked up with Haas with his beauty that put Central away in the third but Jesuit expects a much tougher game against North Medford. They'll probably be the most athletic team we face all year. Their quarterback can do so many different things. Their defense flies to the ball better than any team we've seen all year so they'll create they'll present some problems for us. Boy did Tiger Woods get mad today. Woods missed the birdie putt on 16th swiped at the green with his club. Been over and snatched the ball out of mid-air. Woods and David Duvall are teamed in the World Cup down in Argentina. Duvall with a slick birdie on 18th but Woods and Duvall trail the leaders from New Zealand by four. They're in fifth place. All right December 7th is also an infamous date in Blazers history. December 7th 1982 is when Adrian Dantley and the Utah Jazz came to the Coliseum and made an NBA record 39 straight free throws. Bill Shotley was the announcer. All right it's 28 for 28 at the foul line. They can't be perfect all night can they? Maybe they can. Shays now to make it 37 to 30. So he almost missed but it's down 37 for 37 at the foul line. 38 for 38. 39 for 39. Oh my. The record still stands today. Those black and white pictures are great Ed. Thanks a lot. I see those guys all the time. I'm gonna tease them. Oh they're gonna say thanks Ed. Well he holds the record for the longest fingernails in the world. Yeah now it's time for a change though. The champ yeah says he's gonna trim them for the first time in 20 years. Well here's our question. Who is the Sea Talks all-time interception leader? And we'll have that answer there.
