Feed my family, feed my family. He won't be able to do it where he's going tonight. The chase and mad dash for cash that kept officers busy. Plus the precious cargo officers found in the back of this car. And a baby found dead on the side of the highway. And I opened up that plastic box and there was a little baby. Tonight, the heartbreaking note left inside. That's uptown. And down that way is the Burbs. Used to call them the projects but then they got electricity and air. Only on 5, Inside a War Zone, through the eyes of the soldiers stationed there. Their view from Camp Oklahoma. Eyewitness News 5 starts right now. Metro police spend the day in hot pursuit. I'm Tyler Souty. And I'm Carrie Zamora. We'll have that story in seconds, but first, there are storms in the states. Let's head right to the First Alert Weather Center and Chief Meteorologist Rick Mitchell. Some of these thunderstorms are capable of producing 65 to 70 mile per hour wind gusts. Take a look at First Alert Doppler radar. The storms are really kind of peppered across northern, western and southern Oklahoma. Nothing going on around the metro area right now. We do have a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for Ellis County. Southern sides of Ellis County because of this storm. Moved through Gage to produce 60 mile per hour wind gusts at the Gage Airport. Moving south at about 20 miles per hour. That'll take it into Durham at 618. Crawford at 625. And then across Alfalfa County, there is a severe thunderstorm warning until 630 as well. It's about to move into Helena. It has the potential for 65 to 70 mile per hour winds. Moving south at about 15 miles per hour. Quick look outside. We have thunderstorm clouds building, but no storms. It is hot though. 102 degrees with a heat index of 111. Take a look at the chances for those storms across the state tonight coming up at 618. For now, that's the latest from the First Alert Weather Center. Rick, thank you. Two chases just minutes apart during the first one. Officers in hot pursuit of crooks and cash. It's our big story at 6. Sideway News 5's Cherokee Ballard is live along Broadway near Wilshire. And Cherokee, we're used to seeing cars fly down the highway, but not cash. That's right, Carrie, but that was the case this afternoon here along Wilshire and the access road. Take a look. Feed my family. Feed my family. But police say that's not an excuse for what they caught him doing. Detectives with the Special Project Unit say they caught this man and Ernest Byrd doing a drug deal. That's when they moved in. Officers chased the man in this knee and arrested him here near 500th and Bainbridge. During the chase, they say he was throwing cocaine and cash out of the car windows. That was here along Broadway extension between Wilshire and Britain. Now that chase lasted only a short three minutes, but the charges will certainly last a lot longer if they're found guilty of trafficking cocaine. Reporting live, Cherokee Ballard, I witness News 5. And just minutes after that chase ended, Del City police were chasing a stolen car with a baby still on board. I witness News 5's Mark Myers continues our live team coverage right now. He is live in Del City. Mark, first of all, is the baby okay tonight? Yeah, Tyler, the baby boy is just doing just fine tonight, around 1 o'clock. So folks are trying to get rid of some stolen equipment at this pawn shop behind me, and that was just the start of it. By the time police made it to the pawn shop, the people they were looking for were taking off. Police followed them and called in the car's tag number. It came back stolen. Then there was a high-speed chase. Two officers were able to apprehend two of the suspects when they bailed from the vehicle about the 4500 block at Cherry Hill in Oklahoma City. That left two others. The chase continued through residential areas and came to an abrupt stop at this apartment complex in the 5800 block of Sunny Lane. That's where officers made a startling discovery. A baby was in the car. There was a female in the vehicle that had a five-month-old child. At this particular point in time, she is cooperating with our officers and providing a statement. 21-year-old Amanda Milton and her five-month-old son were in that car. She says she didn't know what was going on, but the guys picked her up to run some errands. She said, sure, anything to get out of the house. So her and the baby went with them. Fortunately, the child is doing just fine. He was strapped in the stolen car. However, they were thoughtful enough to keep the baby in a carrier and use the seat belt. Now, police have three other people in custody, 30-years-old James Dan, 19-year-old Martell Carter, and 17-year-old Justin Price. Reporting live from Hill City, I'm Mark Myers. I'm with the News 5. This next story is sad and shocking. Tonight, state investigators are trying to figure out what killed a newborn baby. That baby found inside a box along an Oklahoma highway. The baby's body was found south of Tahlequah along Highway 82. The woman who found the baby describes a note found inside. Alexia, I think it said, Alexia Star. And then it said, I love you always and you'll always be in my heart and I'm sorry that it happened this way. Police are looking for the baby's mother tonight. A major mess at a metro school, Coolidge Elementary, has been tagged with gang graffiti. With school starting in just about two weeks, the mess will have to be cleaned up fairly quickly. The reason some of the graffiti is so graphic, we can't show it to you. The Oklahoma City School District will probably pay the bill for that cleanup. Problems like that, just part of the reason Oklahomans across the metro are taking you to the streets tonight. Yeah, they're taking part in National Night Out. New tonight, Eyewitness News 5's Rachel Kim is live at Early Wine Park. Rachel, National Night Out is underway there. It sure is, Carrie. People are starting to arrive here as things get into gear. Several law enforcement officials are here to talk about how neighborhoods can prevent crime. One of that being the problem of meth in Oklahoma. This display was brought out by the District Attorney's Office. They, along with police and sheriffs, are here to talk about how people can recognize crime and prevent it in their neighborhoods. But on a less serious note, of course, the grill is going as the hot dogs are cooking here. There's music and people are starting to come out for dinner time. It's basically more than anything else, a time to get to know your neighbors and to promote a neighborhood spirit. We'll check in with you in a little bit. Carrie, back to you. Alright, Rachel, thank you so much. So, will you take part in National Night Out? Log on to Channel Oklahoma right now and tell us what you think. We'll have the results of the poll and show you what other neighborhoods in the metro are doing tonight. It's live at 614. Tonight, the family of one of the flesh-eating bacteria victims talks for the first time. Eyewitness News 5 was first to tell you about the deaths of two people at Midwest Regional Medical Center. Gail Young was an emergency room nurse at Midwest Regional for 30 years before her death last week. Her stepdaughter says she loved life, her family, coworkers, and the patients she cared for. She would go home and she would cry over her patients that she had, if they were particularly hurt. And she would sit up and talk with my dad about it and cry some more. She was just very tender-hearted. Stro says they do not hold the hospital responsible for her stepmother's death. Tyler? Carrie, how will rescue workers react when seconds count? Here's the situation. A military plane loaded with nuclear materials trying to make an emergency landing after a fire in the cockpit. Well, the plane clips another plane and crashes just short of the runway. And now rescuers race against time, trying to save lives. How's the crew? How's the hurry? We've got a resource not being utilized. So utilize that resource, okay? An aircraft was flying overhead and had an emergency to try and land here in Tinker and collide with another aircraft. And that aircraft that was airborne was carrying simulated nuclear weapons. They just put a bandage on it. You can help here. It gives us a chance to see what supplies we use and how to use them and how to get out there and triage the patients effectively and get them to where they need to be. Keep going to your left. It is an unlikely event, but you know what? It could happen. We could have weapons being ferried across the country and landing here for a refueling stop. And something could happen, and that's why we practiced that. Now, we did take a number of calls this morning from viewers worried about what was happening there in Midwest City. Once again, it was all just a drill. How Oklahomans are getting to know their neighbors and preventing crime in their neighborhoods, next in a live report. And will you take part in National Night Out? Let us know by going to ChannelOklahoma.com. We'll have the results later in the newscast. And this may not be very patriotic. The victims that were taken to the hospital appeared to have minor smoke inhalation. About one of them was transported, reporting live from about 2300 block, Southwest 49th. Terry Watkins, Eyewitness News 5. Terry, thank you. Before anyone fired a shot in Iraq, American troops were facing a different enemy, the desert itself. It took a little ingenuity and a whole lot of hard work to create a place we call Camp Oklahoma. And thanks to this camera and their own words, the men and women of the Oklahoma Air National Guard take us there. Tonight, Eyewitness News 5 exclusive, a special visit for some of Oklahoma's hometown heroes. Today is a good day. Today we go fly. At work. At play. They're at home. For now, at least. A makeshift city, short on comfort, but big on spirit. Nice flag. Welcome to the neighborhood. That's uptown. And down that way is the Burbs. Used to call them the projects, but then they got electricity and air. And now it's kind of like the Burbs in Edmond. Maybe not exactly like Edmond, or Yukon, or Mustang. Desert sand is just fine for some volleyball. And yes, there is shopping. I got peanuts. I want a cold RC. The base exchange is remarkably stocked with crests, conditioner, even kisses. But there is no need for detergent. The laundry here is bagged, tagged, and sent out for cleaning. Meanwhile, at the mess, supper is served. Which is pasta with Alfredo sauce. The vegans here. Crackers. Peanut butter. A pound cake. The pineapple. Peanuts. And of course, the entree. This is the pasta with vegetables and Alfredo style sauce. And of course, you need your water. And a dining companion. Might make your dinner look a little more appetizing. Now our thanks to Lieutenant Colonel Doug Hayworth and Master Sergeant Barry Field for leading us on that guided tour. You've noticed the troops seem very much at ease. National Night Out is happening right now as we speak. It's an effort to clean up crime on streets across the country. Eyewitness News 5's Rachel Kim is live in South Oklahoma City tonight. And Rachel, people all over the metro were taking part. Carrie, the festivities here at Early Wine Park is one of them. As you can see right here, it's law enforcement galore. They're here to talk about how people can prevent crime in their neighborhoods and basically just to get to know the residents. Earlier today, we found out how this event is catching on in one Norman neighborhood. I don't think any neighborhood is safe from some sort of crime. The reason why Myra Harrell is getting ready for St. James Park's first National Night Out tonight. If we get to know each other and we're able to work with each other, we can watch out when neighbors are gone or when they're home. Although St. James Park is a relatively new community, Harrell says they have a plan to keep it safe. We're going to try to put together a neighborhood directory. That way we will have phone numbers and addresses and should something go wrong and we need to contact somebody, we'll be able to. A plan for the present and future. We've lived here two years and at the time there were very few houses here. And now then as you can see, there are houses going up all over the place. Now this night out is basically to educate citizens how to prevent crime in their neighborhoods and how to recognize crime. But most of all, it's getting to know the neighbors and getting to know local law enforcement. That's pretty much it. Reporting live, Rachel Kim, Eyewitness News 5. Now earlier in the newscast, we asked if you would take part in National Night Out. 13% of you said you will, 87% of you say you will not. Now you can take part in the poll and learn more about National Night Out by going to our website, channeloakwaHoma.com. Yet another August night with storms in the state.
