At least two people died in the attack, 32 others are wounded. In Australia, strong winds fuel a massive brush fire in New South Wales. More than 4,000 firefighters are working around the clock trying to control the flames. More than 300,000 acres have gone up in smoke. Three people there have died. And in Japan, a salute to firefighters. About 2,600 firefighters captivated a crowd with demonstrations on how they put out intense flames and rescue people. The event also included a parade of marching bands and various fire trucks. The annual event dates back to 1659, as a way to honor firefighters. Also in Japan, police are investigating what may be the ultimate panty raid. A 29-year-old man is in custody today for allegedly stealing 1,200 pieces of underwear from several Tokyo area schools. Now the man says he started selling the clothes as a hobby, but then he realized he could make a lot of money selling them to people with fetishes. Straight ahead on today's Channel 10 News. We'll tell you why you can chill out if you've got a cold. The latest breakthrough could have you breathing. They have no suspects. A Doylestown woman accused of shooting a prominent attorney will spend somewhere between five to 20 years in a mental institution. That's according to an agreement reached just moments ago between prosecutors and defense counsel. Mary Mulaski was charged last summer with trying to kill attorney William Eastburn. The decision on her fate was handed down just a few minutes ago in Doylestown. That's where Channel 10's Siani Lee is joining us live now with more on this story. Siani? Good afternoon, Tim. Late yesterday evening, attorneys from both sides of this case reached a plea agreement. Now in that agreement, 28-year-old Mary Mulaski of Montgomery Township pleaded guilty but mentally ill. Now that means that she will spend between five to 20 years at North Town State Mental Hospital, but a minimum of five years in that hospital for shooting her former attorney William Eastburn. Now she was charged with attempted murder. But the winds are southerly. That agreement was reached. And tonight, attorney Charles Peruto Jr. and Bucks County DA. Allen Rubin, who as much as four inches already sections of just north and west of here have reported four inches of snow on the ground. Four to six will be the total there. Allentown, Reading, Lehigh, Regent, six inches or more. Poconos, 12 or more. But ice, severe ice buildup will be the problem as the afternoon wears on. Tim and Siani. All righty. Thank you, John. That's our coverage of the snowstorm for right now. The situation will be changing as John just told you. Channel 10 will have the very latest for you tonight on the Channel 10 news at five, six and eleven o'clock. Tim. Now onto our other top story this noon. A major earthquake that rocked southern California, sparking fires, buckling freeways and causing power blackouts up and down the entire west coast. Now the earthquake measuring a very strong 6.6 on the Richter scale hit at 431 this morning, Los Angeles time. It was centered in the San Fernando Valley just north of downtown L.A. But shockwaves were filled as far away as Las Vegas. Here's the latest now at this hour from the California quake. There are now five confirmed deaths, two of them from heart attacks, a third person killed when a car crashed on a quake shattered freeway. Many more have been injured, one of the deaths reportedly a policeman. Major freeways, the I-5, the I-14 and the Santa Monica freeway have suffered major damage. Others are closed this noon. In Sylmar in the San Fernando Valley, at least 40 homes have been destroyed by fire set by ruptured gas mains. Even now, emergence of a whole story. Fires from ruptured natural gas pipes, many homes and businesses have burned and in some cases fallen down hillsides. Freeways have collapsed with cars still on them and the fatality count is growing by the minute. Water mains are broken all over the city, gushing water onto the streets. Electric transformers have blown, causing fires, in this case a car fire on the street below. It all happened at 431 this morning California time as seismographs rattled with the quake. We have a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale. We're having a number of aftershocks. If you can see this recording here, you can see that we're continuing to have them as we speak. Some of these aftershocks have been in the magnitude 5 range and they will be continuing for the next several hours and some of them could be very strong. Throughout Southern California, they're comparing this quake to the one that hit the same region in 1971. And they're also comparing it to the quake that recently hit San Francisco. This is comparable to what was experienced in the San Francisco Bay Area on October 17th of 1989. This is a major earthquake. The epicenter of the quake was in Northridge in the San Fernando Valley, about 20 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Even at noon today, people are still out of their homes, huddled in open fields and in the streets. Travel will be difficult, at best, for the next several days and weeks, as major freeways such as the Santa Monica Freeway in and around Los Angeles are either heavily damaged or buckled from the quake. Even now, emergency crews are discovering new damage and more injuries and fatalities from the earthquake. And the worst now is the aftershocks. No one knows when or where they'll hit. Well, just after the quake hit, Channel 10 talked by phone with former Philadelphian Glenn Hammond, who lived on Rittenhouse Square until moving to L.A. two years ago. ...in bed and sound asleep, of course. It was roughly about 425, 430, somewhere in the morning like that. And immediately the building started to shake violently, absolutely violently. And with that, you can hear various things falling all over the apartment and the walls cracking and what have you. Quite scary to say the least. When the earthquake hit, there was violent explosions of, I suppose, transformers and things of that sort. I suspect there's lots of damage or some moderate level of damage. Right now, all we're hearing are emergency vehicles responding all over the city. Now, believe it or not, the California quakes are also affecting us here at home. Our bad weather and the earthquake is causing a lot of times at the Philadelphia International Airport. All flights into and out of Los Angeles are delayed, and there are now unconfirmed reports LAX has reopened. Snow and winter weather are also causing delays and cancellations for flights headed to or from Baltimore, Washington, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, New York, and Boston. Best advice, call your carrier before heading to the airport today. And that's our coverage of the earthquake for now. But stay with Channel 10 and CBS throughout the day and night for constant updates. We'll have the latest for you on all this. And although it's nothing like what happened around LA, people in Redding, Pennsylvania are talking about an earthquake there over the weekend. Two tremors near Redding caused some minor damage on Saturday night. The tremors were classified by the government as light earthquakes at 4.0 and 4.6. Still, they are stronger than most quakes in the Northeast. This earthquake set at 4.6 basically means that this earthquake was about 100 times more powerful than what we would normally expect. No injuries were reported in the quakes or during several aftershocks felt yesterday, but dozens of homes did sustain damage to walls and foundations. Damage was mostly concentrated in the three-square-mile area. And news around the world this noon, a summit between President Clinton and Syrian leader Hafez Assad is sparking protest. In the Golan Heights, right-wing Israeli demonstrators carried banners and burned tires. They don't want Israel to trade land for peace. Mideast peace talks are scheduled to resume in Washington on January 24. In a German courtroom today, American lose racer Duncan Kennedy pointed out the two neo-Nazis accused of attacking him. Kennedy was punched and kicked when he was outside a German bar in October. The attack allegedly occurred after about 15 skinheads insulted Kennedy's black teammate Robert Pipkins of Drexel University. It happened while the U.S. team was in Germany preparing for next month's Olympics. News closer to home now. A former aide to Philadelphia, Mayor Ed Rendell, announces his bid for Congress. Jonathan Cameron is in Center City this morning where Democrat Harvey Clark says he will run for the first congressional district seat. Clark's opponent will be veteran Congressman Tom Fulietta, and the primary is set for this spring. The first congressional district covers south and southwest Philadelphia and portions of Delaware County, including Chester. Clark is a former TV reporter. He was a deputy city representative with the Rendell administration. And across the nation and the Delaware Valley, folks are remembering Martin Luther King Jr. on this Monday. It's a national holiday in King's honor. This morning, an ecumenical service in honor of Martin Luther King was held at Zion Baptist Church in North Philadelphia. And Jonathan's Luanne Kahn is there with more. Luanne? See, honey, I understand that this particular ecumenical service here is one of the largest in the country. It has been going on. It has been a tradition here for over 20 years. And despite this miserable weather, it is packed inside. A number of the people at Zion Baptist Church knew Dr. King in the early 60s, in the 60s, in the middle of the civil rights struggle. And they spoke passionately about that today, including Council President John Street. So with me, it's perfect. And I can remember Dr. King coming, telling us we had to do what we had to do. And it didn't matter how much it mattered. But I can recall going to class and going to work. And I know what it's like to walk down the streets of Alabama, to walk down on those country roads. And every time you hear a car coming, you jump in their bushes, because you do not know what is out there. Sing the praise of the Holy, the King. Representatives from different religious and community organizations addressed the congregation, each remembering how much has been accomplished as a result of the words and deeds of Martin Luther King, and reminding each other that today they must carry on that work. It is important today as it ever was before. We have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go. We enact laws, but we must enact a movement in our heart of mankind to love one another. And if we fulfill that obligation, then Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did not live in vain. That is just a taste of some of the speeches today. There are, of course, events throughout the day, and this is expected to end anytime now. A lot of the people here will be heading into Center City to hear from U.S. Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders. And, of course, we will bring you more on the events throughout the day honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. Live from North Philadelphia, Luanne Kahn, Channel 10 News. Back to you, Siani, Tim. Thank you, Luanne. Okay, thank you, Luanne. When Siani and I come right back on the Channel 10 News at noon, Nancy Kerrigan strapping on the skates and trying to get back in top shape for the Olympics. Figure skater Tanya Harding continues to deny any involvement in the attack against rival skater Nancy Kerrigan. Today in Portland, Oregon, she practiced skating, preparing for the Olympics. Harding says she's trying to make the best of this controversial situation. Meanwhile in Massachusetts, Kerrigan also hit the ice for about an hour this morning. She showed no visible signs of an injured knee. The investigation into her attack continues. Harding's bodyguard and two other men have already been charged. On the Channel 10 Health Watch this noontime, more work needs to be done to get the message out about smoking to the nation's teenagers. A new report by the American Heart Association says that 2.2 million American children aged 12 to 17 now smoke cigarettes. They say ultimately these children may join the ranks of the 417,000 people who die each year from tobacco-related illnesses. But there is good news today from the Heart Association. More and more Americans are bringing their high blood pressure under control. They say the number of Americans with high blood pressure fell from 64 million to 50 million in the last 10 years. Researchers say the decline may be due to better weight control, more exercise, reduced dietary assaults, and less smoking by adults. It used to be the tallest building in Louisville, Kentucky. He said, those aren't tartar fighting ingredients, so your teeth aren't as clean as they could be. Use tartar controlled crest. But doctor, I said, shouldn't I use baking soda and peroxide for my gums? Pete, he said, they're not proven to do anything special for your gums either. So I used crest. And my tartar problem? Eventually we'll get over the freezing mark. Humidity, 85 percent. Pressure, falling winds, southwest at 7. Freezing rain out there. Freezing rain. We still have snow. We still have sleet. And we do have some just plain rain. That's down the shore. Finally, they catch a break down there. No tidal flooding, just plain rain. Allentown, 19 degrees. Snowing, reading still some heavy snow there at 19. Northwest suburbs, already four inches of snow on the ground. Wilmington, a mix of sleet ice pellets and some snow, 21 degrees. Trenton, 20. Atlantic City, see that? Already up over the freezing mark, 37 degrees. Okay, today's weather map. Mild ocean flow, mild air coming up over the cold air from the Gulf of Mexico. The two get together and they collide, and that produces a precipitation. It started out as snow this morning. It arrived around 9 a.m. And the snow is now changing over to sleet and freezing rain, as far as accumulations go. Not that much in and around the city itself. Proper about two, maybe as much as four inches. Four to six will be the rule, north and west of the city. Allentown, reading six or more. Poconos, 12 or more. But the real problem will be ice. That freezing rain will come down this afternoon, mixing with sleet and snow and some heavy frozen precipitation before it changes over to rain and then back to snow before it ends around midnight. Down the shore, simply a rain event. Okay, tomorrow storm system pulls away. But then round two, brutally cold air will arrive. Temperatures in the 20s in the morning, teens during the afternoon, single numbers, and below zero by tomorrow night. Wind chill factors by late tomorrow night, 30 to 40 below zero. Average accumulations, two to three in the city. Four to six, north and west. Lehigh, six or more. Poconos, 12 or more. Tonight, mixed precipitation to flurries and ending around midnight, 38 degrees. It gets above the freezing mark, then it starts dipping down. Tomorrow, windy and biting cold, falling through the 20s into the teens by tomorrow night, into the single numbers below zero in some sections, outlying suburbs by, that would be by Wednesday morning, 10 degrees only for the afternoon high on Wednesday.
