This is ABC. Coming up next on Action 7 News, a fire swept by strong winds destroyed more than three dozen acres of forest land, Yeruodoso today, and threatened several subdivisions. Snow advisories are out tonight as another winter storm takes aim at New Mexico. And another problem for the container that's supposed to carry nuclear waste to the website. These stories and a lot more just ahead on the late breaking edition of Action 7 News. This is KOAT 7, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Now, Bill Sandiford, Trinette Ledford, Ed Lopez, and Joe Diaz with the area's number one news source, Action 7 News. Good evening everyone. A storm system that swept southern New Mexico with near hurricane force winds is being blamed for a rare winter forest fire in Yeruodoso. Well, the fire broke out just before noon today, forcing residents of several Yeruodoso neighborhoods to flee their homes. Several dozen acres of forest land were charred before the blaze was brought under control. Dave Lobshire flew to the area in Sky 7 and has this report. Winds in and around Yeruodoso were reported to be gusting as high as 65 miles an hour this morning. Those winds blew a tree into some power lines at a transformer station. And once that started to fire, it didn't take long to spread into nearby forest land on the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation. Hundreds of firefighters from volunteer departments around Yeruodoso converged on the blaze, but it was a slurry plane that made the big difference. We had one tanker come in out of Alamogordo. It was real windy, so he wasn't as effective as he could have been, but he did help us out. Because of high winds, fire officials were afraid the fire would spread down through the incorporated areas of town. So about 350 people had to leave their homes for two hours. Once the fire was stabilized, they were able to return. Traffic along US 70 was held at a standstill for about an hour, but for those who had to wait, it didn't seem to be a problem. I was just going to get to Alamogordo tonight was all. So it's not going to affect you too much? No, not really. I don't think. What's this going to do to your schedule? Nothing. So it's not too bad? Nah. It's all right. The fire only burned about 40 acres before firefighters got the handle on it, but the high winds and the dryness in the forest could cause a similar blaze in the future. We were in moderate fire danger, which is unusual for this time of the year. And then with this wind, you can see what's happened already. Normally, you don't get fires this size until a month, a month and a half from now. There were no injuries today, and fire officials report no damage to any buildings or structures. Dave Lopshare, Action 7 News, Ruedo So. The damaging winds in Ruedo So today signaled the approach of a strong storm system, and tonight heavy snow, bitter cold, and high winds have a grip on much of New Mexico. This was how it looked earlier today in Taos. Since that time, much of northern New Mexico has picked up as much as half a foot of snow. Heavy snow continues to fall tonight, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a snow advisory for the north central mountains, the northeast highlands, and a northwest plateau through tomorrow. The snow is also affecting travel. State police report U.S. 64 between Cimarron and Taos is closed tonight, as is State Road 38 between Eagle Nest and Red River. Jodea says it will probably get worse before it gets better. You'll have more on our wintry forecast later in the newscast. Well, across the nation, people from Montana to Louisiana are feeling the effects of that Arctic air mass that paralyzed Alaska just one week ago. Temperatures hit record lows all over the north and west today. And as Bonnie Strauss reports, even areas accustomed to cold winters are finding out the true meaning of the word cold. From the northwest to New England and south to Texas, bitingly cold air and freezing drizzle have made life miserable. In the Columbia River near Portland, there was so much ice that boat owners had their work cut out for them as they tried to save their craft. Records for low temperatures were shattered in at least 10 cities, including Seattle, where some residents found themselves without heat after pipes burst. Throughout areas chilled by the deep freeze, firefighters had more than just flames to contend with. In Houston, two trucks jackknifed, causing a 42-vehicle chain reaction. One person was killed and dozens were treated for injuries. So far, across the nation, 22 deaths have been blamed on the Arctic assault. And meteorologists are saying that this dangerously severe weather situation is not about to end. Air travelers are almost getting used to the words delayed and canceled as the icy conditions snarl air traffic at airports across the country. As this deep freeze continues, only the polar bears appear to be coping. Bonnie Strauss, ABC News, Los Angeles. In news from around the world tonight, things are far from cool in Afghanistan. Muslim rebels are poised to capture their first major city. In fact, they've already issued an ultimatum to communist troops guarding Halalabad to give up. The guerrillas say unless the troops surrender, they'll attack. That announcement comes as the Soviet pullout from Afghanistan enters its final phase. All Red Army troops are due out in 10 days. And relations between the world's two largest communist countries appear to be thawing a bit. Moscow announced today Mikhail Gorbachev will have a summit with China's Deng Xiaoping in May in Beijing. Soviet Foreign Minister Edward Shevardnozo says the major topic of discussion will be normalizing relations between the two countries. Back in this country, congressional Democrats spent today trying with little success to quell the controversy over the 50 percent pay raise they're scheduled to get automatically next week. Democrats are gathering at a cushy resort in West Virginia. Among them is Montana Congressman Pat Williams, who characterized the controversy as a, quote, political gas leak and warned that voters are getting ready to strike the match. The Democrats sounded skeptical about how Speaker Jim Wright's latest proposal to lower the pay hike to 30 percent. Starting today, a law forcing employers to give workers advance notice if plant closings takes effect. The legislation was a sore point with former President Reagan, who claimed it would hurt business. Mr. Reagan reportedly under pressure from then candidate George Bush, let it become law. Employers must now give workers 60 days advance notice of plant shutdowns. A few weeks ago we reported it was a possibility, now it's a reality. The General Electric jet engine plant in Albuquerque has announced 50 employees will be let go effective this Friday. Company officials say the plant just completed a contract for parts used in C-5 military transport jet engines, and now there just isn't enough work to go around. The laid off workers are subject to recall, according to a GE spokesman, and these are the first layoffs at the Albuquerque plant in several years. Well, it appears there's another problem for the waste isolation pilot project. Researchers have discovered a leak inside the container, and that container is designed to store and transport nuclear waste. The problem was discovered with a silicone foam gasket inside the container, which has been repeatedly tested and found to have no problems. But this new glitch must be fixed in order to get final approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The package designer, Nuclear Packaging from Seattle, they're ready to submit to NRC because both vessels were leak-tight, and that's what's required by the regulations. However, I'm not fully satisfied. I want to see us take care and make sure both of those seals are going to hold. If modifications are made, the true packed container could be used by August. Well, it is a weekend of celebration for this country's new Interior Secretary. Manuel Lujan came home this weekend for some partying before heading back to his first full week as Secretary of the Interior. The former New Mexico Congressman will be officially sworn in next week. And as John Garcia reports, supporters here want to send Lujan back to Washington with their blessings. The new Secretary arrived late last night to a room full of close friends and media. It was his first New Mexico news conference since assuming the Post as head of the Interior Department. And the large number of reporters is something Lujan says he'll have to get used to as he addresses issues of national concern. In the past, of course, I had five people to deal with who represent news organizations out of New Mexico. So it was very easy. They could just walk in my office and did any time they wanted to, and we visited and had a cup of coffee and that sort of thing. It's a little more difficult in dealing with the national press because this morning there was probably 50 people there. There were several hundred friends and family members invited to a special mass this morning honoring Lujan. Many of these people expected to be seeing more of him when he announced his retirement from Congress many months ago. But they are now wishing him luck as he heads back to Washington. And they are trying to send him back in style. This afternoon an even larger crowd gathered at the State Fairgrounds in the building named for Lujan. He met with many of them to offer thanks. Most feel confident that President Bush picked the right man for the job. I really appreciated the fact that we have one of our own people there, you know. Lujan gives credit to many of these people for helping him get where he is. They're really the ones that are responsible for me being in the cabinet because, you know, through the years they've supported me and of course the people of the First District of New Mexico. And so, you know, that translates into being there these many years. Had I not been there these many years I would not be in the cabinet today. The festivities are far from over though. The new secretary will go back to Washington on Monday morning. Lahn's official swearing-in ceremony for his new office will take place Wednesday in Washington, D.C. And many of these same people will be out to share in that occasion as well. John Garcia, Action 7 News. When we come back, the final part of our series on the regional burn center. All week we've been showing you what goes on at the Bern Center at the University of New Mexico Hospital. Much of it has been difficult to watch, but tonight we'd like to point out that many of the patients there could have avoided the burn that they sustained. Most people who suffer burn injuries don't have to. About 75% of hospitalized patients are admitted because, quite simply, they either weren't careful or they just didn't know some basic facts. The most important thing an adult could do to avoid being injured is watch flammable liquids, especially gasoline. Gasoline has an explosive force. That's why it works, and it doesn't take much of a spark to ignite the fumes. Adults are most commonly injured in accidents involving flammable liquids, but another common injury results from scalding water. At 155 degrees, water can cause a full thickness burn in only one second. Turn the temperature down to 110 or 120 degrees. It takes 30 seconds at 130 degrees. Obviously a child's skin is thinner. You get a more severe burn at a cooler temperature. Children are most vulnerable to burn injuries when they're unattended. Children are risk takers. They explore mostly with their hands. Leaving anything around that can ignite is a self-destructive plaything to a child. Cigarette lighters have set children and houses on fire when they've fallen into the hands of a toddler, and there's another common household item that can be deadly. If we're talking about children, the two things that are most easily avoided, I think, are first of all the temperature in the hot water heater, and the other is to watch extension cords, particularly with toddlers. The patients who agreed to allow a television camera to be present during their treatment had one reason. If seeing their injury could prevent even one person from being burned, it was worth the inconvenience or embarrassment that it may have caused them at the time. You're right. As you said, it's very difficult to watch, but a valuable service, especially when you figure the most of this could be avoided. Nice series for now. Thanks. Well, the Lobos invaded El Paso tonight, game just underway. Here's Ed Lopez with all of Saturday's sports, but that's the biggie. Uh, you see, certainly is. And how many times have the Lobos won in El Paso in the past 10 years? I don't know. Just once. I didn't really know. Just once? Yeah, that's how tough it is to win in El Paso. The much-awaited rematch between the Lobos and the UTEP Miners taking place right now in El Paso. UNM, after beating UTEP here in Albuquerque last week, looking to increase the first-place lead to three games in the WAC conference, but it's not going to be easy. The score midway in the first half right now, the Miners ahead of the Lobos, slightly 24-23, will have a complete wrap-up of the game tomorrow night on the 530 edition of Action 7 News. And silently making its way toward the lead in the WAC. Colorado State, who hosted Wyoming today in Fort Collins, the Rams led by one at the half near the end. It was Andy Anderson, number 34, helping Colorado State pull away. Anderson scores, draws a foul to give CSU a nine-point lead, and with just over two minutes left, it's number 20, Pat Durham driving to the hoop. He scores two of his 15 points. He gets a three-point play out of it after getting fouled. CSU led it 51-39. Then it's number 33, Trent Shippen driving and scoring in the final minute. Colorado State beats Wyoming 58-48. CSU now 6-4 in the WAC conference, while Wyoming drops to 2-6. Checking the WAC scoreboard, as I told you, it was UTEP holding on to a 24-23 lead over the Lobos in the first half. Other scores, San Diego State lost to Air Force 87-69. Colorado State downs Wyoming by 10-58-48. And Miami defeats Brigham Young by a score of 107-86. You might recall that the Lobos just got through polishing off the hurricanes. BYU having a disappointing season this year. In the Big West, New Mexico State has never been able to beat Utah State in Logan, Utah. And it's not going to happen in 1988-89 because Utah State downs New Mexico State handily 92-71. Elsewhere, UNLV and Cal Irvine just getting underway. Nationally, Oklahoma's reign as the number one team in the nation will last just one week. That's because they were upset earlier today by an in-state rival, Oklahoma State 77-73. Cowboy coach Leonard Hamilton not intimidated by top-rank Oklahoma with the score tied at 18, the pass inside of Thomas Jordan for the slam 20-18, Oklahoma State now closing seconds of the first half. Mookie Blaylock misses the desperation shot, but Tony Martin gets the rebound. He hits the J at the buzzer, 39-35 Sooners at the intermission. Second half, game tied at 73 when Byron Houston gets the layup to give OSU the margin of victory. Cowboys upset the Sooners 77-73. Checking the college basketball scoreboard elsewhere. Fifth-ranked Missouri over Kansas State. It was Louisville, no problem with Memphis State. Florida State by one over Cincinnati. Seton Hall downs Boston College. Michigan State falls to 11th-ranked Michigan. North Carolina State upset by the Paul Blue Demons 81-74. Syracuse by 23 over Pittsburgh. Indiana by four over Minnesota. Stanford downs Florida by a score of 84-69. High school basketball, Del Norte and White hosting Highland tonight. You look into number 12 Octavio Chevere dribbling the ball for the Knights. He drives and scores to cut the Highland lead to 7-32-25. But with time running out, first half, Highland Hornets trying to get off a shot before the buzzer. Watch number 30, Jerome Lewis. Stop, hit the 40-footer for three points as the buzzer ends the first half. Highland lead by 10-35-25 at the intermission. Second half, Highland will retain the lead. The Hornets go on to win by 10. Final score, Highland 63, Del Norte 53. Elsewhere tonight, it was Rio Grande by one over Mayfield, Las Cruces 67-48 over Los Lunas. Academy downs Belen by a score of 61-59. Capitol loses to St. Pius 75-57. Zuni over Aztec 85-71 and a late addition, Sandia over Los Alamos 78-63. High school wrestling, it was the finals of the Del Norte wrestling tournament. You're looking at the 171-pound championship match and keep your eyes on this wrestler in brown and gold. That's Bill Yarbrough of Cibola who gets the pin. And in the 189-pound match, it's Mike Sheets in the dark tights with the advantage over Highland and he would go on to take a 7-3 decision to up his perfect record on the year to 19 wins against low losses. Mike Sheets, the 189-pound champion in the Del Norte wrestling tournament. Team wise though, this is how it stacks up. Carlsbad comes from the southern part of the state to win it all. They down Highland by a score of 206.5 to 145. Carlsbad as a team, still undefeated this year. Finishing third was West Mesa at 118, followed by Cibola. El Dorado finished fifth with 112 points. And finally, one of the most sought after high school football players in the state of New Mexico in recent years has made his decision. Mickey Reeves, the all everything football star from defending state champion Roswell High School has verbally committed to play college football at Arizona State. Now Reeves cut the final choices down to four schools, Texas, Texas, Texas Christian and Arizona State and ASU gets the nod. Reeves an integral part in Roswell's winning the state quad A title the past two years. He captured the attention of major colleges across the nation since his sophomore year at Roswell and today he verbally commits to Arizona State where he hopes to play baseball. Also Reeves will be getting the best of both worlds ASU one of the finest football and baseball programs in the nation. So he surprises everybody. Everybody thought he was going to be going to one of the Texas schools but as I said ASU has one of the finest baseball programs in the nation as well as football programs in the nation. So he has he has the best of both worlds of it. Oh he'll be close so we can keep an eye on his progress over there. Oh yeah yeah we'll monitor that. Late score on the low bows just hands me. Late score just hands me by Joe Diaz our weatherman of all people. Now the miners have a 32 to 25 lead right now over the low bows late in the first half but it's late in the first half. If it was late in the second half they'd be in trouble. One of those miners just pumped up a nice little three pointer. It was nice. It make it look easy. It may look very easy. I just want to take a quick peek. Okay thanks. Well those murals you see on public and private buildings around the state could be priceless. It's the topic of tonight's tradition segment. Walgreens is making wonderful things happen this Valentine's Day with a variety of cards and gifts to help you remember the people you love. Isn't it nice there's a Walgreens nearby? Special. Here in New Mexico it isn't that rare to see public murals on some of the buildings in different cities but we seldom think of them as priceless works of art. Well tonight Augusta Myers explains they are becoming rare and if not for two Albuquerque artists they might soon fade from the state's display of artwork. This vibrant mural on the walls of Albuquerque High School not only represents southwestern history dating back before the time of Columbus but it also represents one of the oldest art forms known to mankind. It's wonderful for children and I think kids need role models they need to be able to to know that art is something that you can create and so and being an artist is something that you can be that that it's real. Bernadette and Francisco like to paint in a big way their mark is in many places all over town and they say instead of pleasing just a few their artwork speaks to everyone who passes by. That's sort of a gift that you give the community and anybody that goes by there can have ownership with that and go by there many times say buy a mural and see many different things on any day or every day. Francisco says public art has its risks opening an artist's work up for public criticism but he adds on the other hand it also serves to create a class of nobility. That's very good for the community because you're you're elevating the community from a working-class community to a to another level and that's very important I think. This mural has become a landmark here on Isleta Boulevard but there are efforts underway to remove it and restore the building to its old schoolhouse structure. Bernadette and Francisco say why give up one piece of history to save another? I don't think that you have to look at art in the sense of aid you know the art pleasing you I think you have to appreciate it for art and art artwork you know has life it inspires life and if you were to destroy a work of art like for example I wanted Casa de Mijo you'd be destroying life. Francisco says our civilization has not yet learned to protect public art he says while studying his craft in Mexico where there are numerous great murals he learned a very important saying no hay mas camino que nuestro there is no other road but ours meaning to paint mural art you have to continue because it will be gone and so we have to create another generation of arts. that's at Pee Wee Dalton's with just a half mile south high 40 on course please come see us it is okay to use your fireplace or wood burning stove in the Albuquerque area this evening it is okay to use your fireplace and a good thing for that huh a lot of cold weather winter paying another visit to New Mexico here's Joe Diaz that's right Bill Internet you know we talked about the ski areas an extreme northern portion state picking up a couple feet of snow but the town of Red River picking up an additional 13 inches angel fire the town picked up 18 inches of new snow and four in Taos they're getting socked up and it'll continue all the way tonight and tomorrow about Albuquerque well we're gonna wait a day we're gonna wait a day before we talk about snow okay yeah all right here's here's the way it looks right now the temperature this is really strange you can see the extreme eastern border of New Mexico with that Arctic air minus five in Clayton six Clovis seven for the uh oh well six and two can carry seven in Clovis I guess but look at this 52 in Albuquerque right now and 22 degrees with some snow flurries in Santa Fe and here's the satellite map and actually there's a wave of snow right over here in the southeastern portion of Utah this will be sweeping across the area we have snow in the northern mountains right now and that should just increase as this disturbance starts to drift in our direction so a snow advisory is in effect tonight and it's really been expanded it was earlier in effect for the north central mountains that's been expanded to the northwest plateau and the northeastern highlands so really anywhere from Farmington, Santa Fe, Las Vegas on northward they're expecting two to five inches of snow tonight through tomorrow and some of the higher terrain the mountain areas will pick up a foot so a very interesting day tomorrow snow continuing across the northern third of the state for the most part Arctic cold hugging the extreme eastern border of New Mexico it looks like a Carlsbad will have some warm air push on in but for Lovington Hobbs northward into Duke and Kerry and Clayton of course that cold Arctic air mass will still be in place and then between the two frontal systems it should be rather mild from Albuquerque towards the southern portion of New Mexico but here in Albuquerque we'll be in the lower 50s we'll have the wind we'll have some clouds with us and then on Monday colder air will spill into the picture and really tomorrow night on into Monday is the best shot for some snow in the Albuquerque area very cold air settling on into the northern and central plains northeastern New Mexico so many areas over here spent the day below zero I think the temperature right now in Denver is minus 15 and the warmest they got today was about minus 10 windy conditions across the southern mountains of California so it was like a near blizzard over there in the southern mountain of California at least cold in Texas and Oklahoma icy roads around Houston and Galveston right now and some off and on snow from the middle Mississippi Valley on into the Great Lakes region temperatures well pretty much shaped up like this 20s and 30s Boston New York and Washington 83 in Miami sub-zero readings Minneapolis St. Paul and then look at this the high in Denver minus 10 windchill something like 30 and 40 degrees below zero with about three inches of snow in the teens for the highs today across Oklahoma City and Dallas so cold over there and cold across portions of New Mexico tomorrow and some areas will be mild as well we'll have full details right after the break have I got a deal for you buy a sleek new color supreme by February 28th and get $500 back from old plus a year supply of chevron gasoline at no extra charge that's a deal even my dad couldn't pass up I'll change you the couple supreme the cash and all that gasoline for what's behind door number one no deal dad chevron gasoline for a year plus cash back see your new horizon old dealers now New Mexico is proud of its residents who win this award I'm Johnny Morris action 7 news every year ko 87 presents this Jefferson award to seven exceptional individuals each nominated by their friends for their outstanding service to the community ko 87 is now accepting nominations if you know someone you would like to be considered for the Jefferson awards right to ko 87 for a nomination for at box 25 982 albuquerque 87125 entries must be received and the best place to buy drugstore and cosmetic items may not be a drugstore an independent survey by certified public accounts confirms that smith's is lower priced overall lower than Walgreens and lower than alpha beta and smith's is lower than thrifty and lower than osco come prove to yourself that smith's the certified low price leader has lower prices on the drugstore side too so a snow advisory across the northern portion of New Mexico tonight through tomorrow arctic air across the extreme eastern portion of the state and breezy and mild in the south and west let's look at the four corners region some pretty good snow just to the northwest of farmington right now over in the southeastern portion of utah so that'll sweep across the area two to five inches of snow cortez drango on into the farmington shiprock area so a snow advisory in effect there on into cuba and to the north of that area galloping grants often on snow as possible throughout the area temperatures mainly in the 30s south and west clouds will be on the increase and temperatures in the 40s and 50s with some snow perhaps across the old southern edge of the west central mountains around kamado southeastern new mexico looks like there will be a line of cold air clover farwell texas portalis lovington and hobs temperatures there only warming into the 20s and then roswell artesian carlsbad in the upper 40s so the eastern plains extreme eastern portion of new mexico will still be hugging that arctic air and arctic air will continue across claiton and tucumcari and then pretty good snow expected at las vegas on northward santa fe two to five inches of snow so all the areas around six seven thousand feet will be that two to five inch snow band and then across the higher terrain the skiers will really get hammered from this probably an additional foot or so through tomorrow again snow advisory in effect santa fe on northward through tomorrow all right look at the temperature in albuquerque right now 52 degrees here it is 10 o'clock at night the wind southwest at 25 miles an hour gusting into the 40s the high today 58 overnight low of 43 in the valley 42 in the heights in the metropolitan area for tonight overnight lows dropping into the 30s and 40s 34 the valley 40 in the heights and a mainly cloudy day windy day for tomorrow a high of 52 degrees but with the clouds and the wind it won't feel all that mild so it looks like the temperature will be in the lower 50s for tomorrow some clouds and some wind colder air spilling in by monday chance of some snow 39 degrees tuesday cold with some snow showers continuing in and around the albuquerque area 30 degrees wednesday clouds breezy 32 and for friday still on the cold side 37 degrees so for albuquerque the shot of snow starts really the good probabilities of it start tomorrow night on into monday that is really unusual weather 52 here 30 degrees or 20 degrees 22 degrees yeah 22 in santa fe 52 here and minus seven or so up around that little we got that we got well we got a good southerly wind over there and they don't maybe snow here tomorrow and if you're up north tonight boy be careful hey it's heavy in the mountains thanks joe thanks up next it's been more than a decade
