but we'll see it then. Reaction to the President's executive order to end the separation of immigrant parents and children. Plus... A local fishing club is experiencing growth and impacting the life of one young angler in particular. I'm Kate Kelley, and I'll have the story coming up. Members of the Youth Volunteer Corps talk about what it's like to give their time to local charities like CrossLines. The four states most watched news starts now. President Trump signs an executive order ending the practice of separating immigrant parents and children at the border. This is KOAM News at 10. The president's traveled to Minnesota for a campaign-style rally today where he talked immigration. Nikki Baptiste has that story. President Trump rallied supporters in Duluth Wednesday night, hours after reversing course on his administration's policy of separating families at the border. We're going to keep families together, but the border is going to be just as tough. Speaking to Minnesota business leaders ahead of the event, the president once again emphasized the need for immigration reform. We can't put up with the nonsense. At the same time, we're doing it with compassion. Under increasing political pressure, the president signed an executive order allowing parents and children to be detained together for 20 days while the adults await trial for entering the U.S. illegally. But after that, they must still either be deported or separated. We want them to come in through the merit system, not a system where we get MS-13. House Republicans are already planning to take up two immigration bills Thursday addressing family separations. This is very good compromise legislation that not only solves the child separation issue at the border, it also solves the border. A bipartisan group of senators is also working on a long-term solution. We double the number of immigration judges. We create an expedited system to process asylum claims. When we put an ankle bracelet on these people, 95 percent of them show up for their hearings. More than 2,300 children have been separated from their parents at the border since May. It's unclear how long it will take for those children to be reunited with their loved ones. Nikki Battiste, CBS News. President canceled a congressional picnic schedule for tomorrow amid the ongoing immigration debate. Locally, the Southwest Missouri Democrats hosted a town hall for four of their candidates for the 7th Congressional District in Missouri. KOIM's Chris Warner spoke with them about the order and immigration and joins us now with more. Now, we're just a little less than two months away from the August primaries, and that's what brought these candidates to tonight's town hall meeting. They spoke to a packed crowd on a number of issues, the first and foremost being immigration reform in the country and President Trump's executive order. All four say they support a bill by Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein and supported by Missouri Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill called the Keep Families Together Act. People need to be welcomed here. We used to be the shining light of democracy and freedom, and I think we should stand up and continue to do that. Seeking asylum is not a crime, and they should not be detained as criminals. And I think it was horrifying that they had separated parents from children. I cannot imagine what that was like for the kids. What our government is doing is no less than a human rights violation as far as I'm concerned. It's good to see that there's an executive order movement on this. Government should not be in the business of separating families. That's a trauma from which these children will never recover. Psychologists say so. He had the option not to do it in the first place, but he chose to do that. And if we as Americans had seen that done in any other country, we would have screamed and been very upset with them. And there we are, you know, becoming a laughing stock in front of the country, how we are handling people who are just searching for the American dream like our ancestors were. The candidates are vying for the chance to run against Congressman Billy Long. His stance on immigration is highlighted on his website. He says he believes in legal, regulated and appropriate levels of immigration. The August primary is Tuesday the 7th. The winner of that primary will face Republican Long this November. The one thing each candidate stressed was the importance of voting and voting for the people who they think is going to be the best choice for the position. Dow? Chris Warner in the newsroom tonight. Thanks, Chris. Immigration policy is the subject of our KOAM-TV interactive question. Yeah, actually, it's going to be pretty nice. And tomorrow is the beginning of summer. Feels like we've been in summer for months now, but officially summer begins at 5.07. So in about, I'll just show you, seven hours across the area. 89 before the storms moved in today. Over an inch of rain. But you can see the storms kind of blew up really from Fort Scott, Parsons, Independence and then really worked east. And then now we have a few additional little thunderstorms which have been pushing into our northern counties. So if you live north of Parsons, Pittsburgh, Lamar tonight, you'll have at least a decent shot to see a few scattered little showers and thunderstorms. We're sitting into low to mid 70s, so it's fairly comfortable. We'll drop back to about 68, 73 by 979 by noon. High temp of 82. And again, we could see an isolated shower. We'll break down the whole forecast for you here in just a bit. All right, we'll catch it then. Thanks, Doug. Heavy rain could mean a bit of relief for Kansas as a state audit shows it's not properly prepared for wildfires. The legislative audit says the Kansas wildfire suppression system is underfunded and understaffed and operates with a fragmented leadership. The audit was ordered after wildfires in 2016 and 2017 burned more than 800,000 acres in Kansas causing 80 million dollars in damage and killing one person. Auditor Andy Brienzo says Kansas doesn't have adequate resources to meet the demand for services. Seneca High School's fishing club is gearing up for the Midwest shootout after eight members won their way to the state championship. Championship takes place in September at Table Rock. Today KOAM's Kate Kelly caught up with one of the anglers, Jordan Lowry, to find out what the club means to him. Seventeen-year-old Jordan Lowry has been fishing since he was big enough to hold a pole and that's why it was no surprise that he and his brother started a club for their favorite activity about two years ago. We actually started it. We went in front of the school board my freshman year and we just proposed the idea and they were just thrilled with it. The anglers are broken up into one pair per boat, often spending up to eight hours on the water as they compete in tournaments throughout the year, applying the skills they learned from their coach. A one degree drop in temperature overnight can change the fish and how they act. This grass line here can change where they're at and this and that so it's very technical. Tournaments are won by catching the heaviest fish and keeping them alive till the weigh-in. Teams earn points and can win money for their clubs or scholarships. Coach Quinley is seeing his students' progress. They've gotten better and better over every tournament and they're applying some of the stuff they're learning and it's really helping them out. The Seneca Fishing Club had eight members qualify for the Table Rock shootout over the weekend and one of the fishermen heading to that competition is Jordan, who aims to keep fishing in his future. I plan on attending college and college fishing collegiate level and I'm just trying to take it to the next level. And with the support of his coach, family and community, Jordan is casting in the right direction. And Jordan's one of those special kids and I've got a lot of them but Jordan's one of those special kids that he just he eats it up. In Seneca, Kate Kelly, KOM News. Club has nearly doubled since it began two years ago. These students are now part of the team. Cancer patients at Freeman Health System got a surprise. 80 blankets and 25 craft kits were donated by Subaru and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Subaru customers in Joplin also had the chance to send inspirational cards. One Freeman doctor says this is a good reminder of how cancer survivors continuously need support and encouragement. They do have better outcomes, better survival. So you know as physicians sometimes we forget that. Sometimes we're so focused on lab work or tests, you know, test results that we kind of lose sight of treating the whole patient. Since 2016, Subaru and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society have impacted the lives of 70,000 patients in 400 hospitals and treatment centers. And that is a look at today's top stories and weather within the first seven minutes of KOM News at 10. Still ahead, working for the summer. Local charities like Crossline are getting help from the Youth Volunteer Corps. Only solidists will tell you what it's all about coming up. And later the Arkansas Razorbacks take on Texas Tech looking to advance in the College World Series will have highlights in sports. Live from KOAM, you're watching KOAM News at 10. This is the 4-6 most watched news. Imagine facing lung surgery with two to four incisions or even one this big. Now imagine one incision this small. It's called the Youth Volunteer Corps Joplin. KOAM's Lisa August caught them hard at work. Two, pretty much everything except peanut butter because people don't need as much as that. It's week two of the Youth Volunteer Corps for Benjamin Barnett. The 17-year-old says he wanted something more out of summer. You get these stereotypes about kids and they don't want to do anything. They just want to stay home. They don't want to do dishes or anything like that. But in reality it's the little things that matter, the little things that really contribute. And this doesn't have to be a major thing, but just waking up and holding respect for other people. This week's YVC team came to cross lines on Commodity Day, helping the charity efficiently serve more than 300 people. So to have them running around making us all tired, lifting big pallets full of cans and packing all those bags, it's really cool to watch. It just kind of changes the energy here in the building. The help is welcome and the kids are becoming part of Cross Lines Corps. Yeah, we're absolutely dependent on volunteers. When folks come to get services from Cross Lines, they come, they don't just come face to face with our staff team. They come and meet their neighbors in the community. It's their neighbors that are handing them food. It's their neighbors that greet them at the door. The program is flexible. Students volunteer six hours a day, four days a week, and can do as many weeks as they wish. But the rewards can last a lifetime. It makes me feel a lot happier than me just sitting around the house, probably just doing video games, for an example, and taking my time out of this to come and help these people. At day's end, there's a lesson, such as food deserts, which can exist even in Joplin. The more personal that you can get with your volunteer experience, the more fun you will have because it makes it relatable to your community and that's where you live. You want to be investing into your community. There's been a couple times I've helped people carry stuff out. It definitely helps know that you are making an impact and that people are receiving help that they need in order to get by. It's really, like I said before, it's just a really fulfilling sort of thing. In Joplin, Lisa Ollegas, KOAM News. Youth can still volunteer anytime this summer through an online form, which includes a parental waiver that form does. We put a link on our website. That's KOAMtv.com. Find new roads at your local Chevy dealer. Well, we got some much needed showers and thunderstorms across a good chunk of the region. About 70, 75% of the area did pick up rain today. You can see this nicely on our Tummy's Express time lapse. Car wash, south range line. See the clouds kind of billowing up and then the storm rolling through. Didn't last long. Only about 30 minutes in most areas, but a lot of areas picked up some decent amounts of rain. In fact, in Joplin about an inch and a quarter, two and a half for the month. Average is 21. So we're behind by six. Look where we were last year. This year we're just shy of 16. Last year we were over 28 inches and that's why the grass stayed green all summer long. We're not going to see that this summer. Near 90 yesterday, near 90 for us today. And then look at the drop off down to about 70 and then we sat into the 70s from that point on. Still lower 70s. Columbus 71, 72 in Seneca 71 in Carthage. Miami also at 71 degrees. This is consistent across the entire area. Everybody right around 70 to 72 and we'll continue to drop back into the upper 60s later on tonight. Currently outside we sit at 71. Literally winds light at five but our humidity is on the high side. Could see a little bit of patchy fog and spots during the overnight hours tonight. You can see the storms. They erupted really from Fort Scott to Parsons and then pushed east. We did see some heavy amounts of rain, especially Cherokee, Jasper, Newton, also Ottawa counties over an inch of rain. We look pretty good now. Scattered showers and thunderstorms with the true cold front that is rolling through. Some of these guys fairly strong. These are mainly going to stay north of 400 over toward Lamar. So if you live north of 400 that's where the best shot, at least tonight, to see some isolated thunderstorms. And then as our big area of low pressure really just kind of sinks in our direction over the next couple days, it's actually going to usher in some cooler air. You can see the rain just kind of rotates around it as we head into Friday. We will see some clouds and we will see a few random showers over the next 24 hours. This system will exit late Friday. Next system drops in for Saturday, giving us our next shot for showers and thunderstorms across the region. Our isolated storms tonight will break out. We'll see partly sunny skies will heat up 82 ish, 83 ish tomorrow. Clouds will work back in in the afternoon. And again, we could have a few isolated showers late in the day. High temp, actually fairly nice, 82. Tomorrow's first day is summer and it's going to be much cooler than what we have been. Clouds stick around tomorrow night and then partly sunny skies on Friday again. A high temp right around 80 degrees. Watch the storms. They start to push in Friday night into Saturday morning. So we'll have a round of storms Saturday morning. We'll break out. We'll see partly sunny skies. Warm front moves through. More thunderstorms develop by Saturday afternoon. We'll have to watch these and exactly where the front is. Some of them could be strong, possibly severe. 82 for us tomorrow. Let's go 80 on Friday. Back to 84 Saturday. Upper 80s Sunday. 90s return with thunderstorm chances again. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday of next week. So at least we have rain chances in the forecast and temperatures a little bit cooler over the next few days. Yeah, we'll welcome both. Most definitely. Thanks, Doug. Last night the Outlaws topped Jefferson City 5-1 at home. Tonight Joplin is on the road trying to pick up back to back league wins for the first time this season. Facing the Sedalia Bombers. Sedalia is the best team in the league right now, entering the night with a 13-5 record. That one is final. Outlaws fall on a close one 5-4. Leadoff man Zach Elen went one for three with a three run home run that came in the fifth inning. Moving on now to the majors. The St. Louis Cardinals have split the first two games of their three game series with the Philadelphia Phillies. On Tuesday the Cards won game two 6-5. This afternoon the two teams meeting for the finale. St. Louis trying to avoid their third straight series loss. Top of the second, they're down one until Yadier Molina goes long off Jake Arietta. Solo shot ties the thing up a one. To the fourth now, Phillies would reclaim the lead. Cesar Hernandez two run jack to right makes it 3-1 Philly. Check out the grab by the woman out there though. Check it out again in slow motion. Nice extension, she brought the glove and everything. She's ready. Great catch. In the sixth, still 3-1. Here comes Yadier again. This time two run shot for Molina once again. We're tied at three but in the seventh, Phillies respond. Odual Herrera solo home run makes it 4-3. That would be the last run of the ball game. Cardinals fall 4-3 for their third straight series loss. In the American League, the Royals facing the Rangers, KC lost eight straight 14-15. Salvador Perez line drive but jerks and pro far. Nice diving grab. Quick reaction. It stays 2-0 in Texas. Later in the inning though, Hunter Dozier hits this one to the wall. One run scores to bring KC within one. Dozier however is going to get caught between second and third. They get nine straight losses for the Royals. This one, 3-2. The Arkansas Razorbacks are 1-0 at the College World Series in Omaha. They won their opener against the Texas Longhorns 11-5 on Sunday. The Razorbacks were supposed to face Texas Tech in the second round last night but because of the weather, that game was pushed back to today. The winner of this one will be just one win away from competing in the National Championship Series. Hogs jump out to an early lead. Dominic Fletcher to right. Not a lot of communication going on. Two runs score on that play. Arkansas up 2-0. Next inning, Wichita, Kansas native Jared Gates adds to the lead. He drills one out to right. Puts it in the bullpen. Arkansas out to a 3-0 lead. Razorbacks would hold on today. Final score, 7-4. The NBA draft is tomorrow night in Brooklyn. In the latest mock draft from CBS Sports, both Michael Porter Jr. from Mizzou and Trey Young out of Oklahoma are projected to go in the top ten. Young at number six to the Orlando Magic. Porter to the Chicago Bulls at number seven. Both players played just one year at their respective schools. That draft will begin at six o'clock tomorrow evening. Finally, one of the best centers in the game is switching teams. Again, Dwight Howard has been dealt from Charlotte to Brooklyn this afternoon. For Howard, Brooklyn will be the sixth team he's played for in his career. Since he was drafted back in 04, Howard is averaging 17 points, nearly 13 rebounds per game and has been named to the All-NBA first team five times. So now, Royals close one tonight. They lose three to two. They've now lost what I think is 15 of 16 and nine straight or a lot. This is painful for fans. I'm sure for those players, too. It really is. It's getting embarrassing. Doug, we'll be right back with the last check of the forecast first, though. We honor a local veteran. Lieutenant Colonel Bradley Byler served in the U.S. Army.
