Governor Booth Gardner comes to town accentuating gains made on the drug traffic trying to improve on a week showing in the primary elections here in Benton Franklin County. Good evening everybody more on Booth Gardner's visit to the Tri-Cities today plus we'll tell you about the latest fad to come out of the Olympics. The news comes your way in just a couple minutes stay with us. There's a reason Slade Gordon isn't in the Senate anymore. While he was there he voted to deny low-income senior citizens a social security cost of living increase. Not once but nine times Slade Gordon voted against social security benefits and then he voted 13 times to cut Medicare and health services for seniors. Now he wants to go to the Senate again but Slade Gordon had his chance and he used it to vote against social security. Can we afford to give Slade another chance? Meet Jim and Jenny. Both love their strawberry fruit snacks but Jim's are a little light on the fruit. Jenny's are heavier on the fruit. Their strawberry fruit wrinkles from Betty Cracker and compared to Sunkist Strawberry Fun Fruits Betty Cracker has twice the fruit and a third less added sugar. When you're heavy on the fruit you can lighten up the added sugar. Betty Cracker's strawberry fruit wrinkles and willups are heavy on the fruit. Good evening everyone. The campaign trail brought Governor Gardner eye to eye with a program that's grown largely as a result of state tax money today. Gardner took time with drug police in the Tri-City area to highlight what he calls a very successful program designed to cut into the drug traffic in this area. The Metro Drug Task Force, it's one of the highlights for Gardner in this area. He fared poorly in the primaries here and support for Republican challenger Bob Williams is strong here. Gardner will play up successes fighting drugs in Benton and Franklin Counties and he scoffed at suggestions made by Bob Williams that the two have a five debate schedule. The state is going a sincere commitment to education at all levels but beginning with preschool and early childhood education, commitment to the environment, commitment to jobs, commitment to communities, commitment to fight drugs as we are here by putting money in. A better part of the day had Gardner listening to progress made by the drug task force. The drug unit in the Tri-City has got the second highest amount of money the state handed out for drug enforcement. We've got to gather all the various jurisdictions under one task force to begin to work the problem and it's a unique great effort that I think can be used in other communities. Gardner says the war against drugs has turned the corner especially with programs like the one here in the Tri-Cities. Gardner says as long as he's on board support for drug enforcement programs like the Tri-Cities Metro will continue. Even adamant skeptics of the efforts of the Metro Drug Task Force have at least put some disruption in the drug traffic here and although police made several high profile busts over the summer, Dave Meany reports that the work of the drug police has just begun. Since its inception in January of this year, the Tri-City Metro Drug Task Force has made great strides in their battle against drug activity in our area. Task Force Chairman Jim Kennedy feels the community is better off than it was nine months ago. He says the 11 member task force will continue to pressure drug dealers until they're out of the community. The bottom line is that the success of this task force is preventing the illegal drugs from getting out of the streets and to our young people and to the other people in the community. The force has reason to feel good about its success. To date they've made 240 arrests, seized 2 million dollars in illegal drugs, 48 vehicles, over 250 thousand dollars in property and over 150 thousand dollars in cash, all totaling about 2.6 million dollars. Even though this task force has been very successful, I still think that the Tri-City area still has a tremendous drug problem and will continue to have a drug problem until we can figure out some ways to combat or deal with those people. Kennedy says the key for a clean community is to educate the kids. He applauds the new DARE program. The key for the task force's continued success, he says, is continued federal funding. He hopes the governor's visit today will mean just that. Dave Meany, News Center 25, Kennewick. The 61 year old Indian professor released from captivity in Beirut yesterday spent his first full day of freedom in almost 20 months. After spending the night in a Damascus hospital, Mithleshwar Singh met with reporters today as he prepared to make his return to the United States. What are your thoughts about your three colleagues now that you've left them behind? It is better for me not to make any statement on that at all because that you don't know that might hurt them. In Washington, administration officials are still puzzled why no Americans were released. The president denies any negotiations are going on with pro-Iranian elements in the Middle East. Any additional hostages within the next few days or so? Any indication? I haven't seen any indication of that. It's been a great problem for us and it's been something that's very much in our minds and we're not engaged in any negotiations with captives. U.S. officials will begin their interrogation of Singh and try and learn what they can about the remaining American hostages. Officers in Chicago say a bleeding ulcer caused Congressman Mike Lowry to pass out yesterday on a plane from Washington, D.C. Lowry is reported to be in good condition in the intensive care unit at a hospital in Chicago. He's been given two units of blood since being administered yesterday morning. Aides to Lowry say a new diet should take care of future problems. The Republican opponent, Slade Gorton, sent a get-well note today. Lowry's office says he's made 62 trips between Washington state and the District of Columbia this year. One day before the vice presidential candidates get together for a debate in Omaha, the two main actors tomorrow night spent the day lowballing themselves, each trying to paint himself as the underdog going into what could be a critical clash between the presidential campaigns. Andrea Mitchell reports. The last event at Omaha's civic auditorium was professional wrestling, a sport that's often more show than substance. Today the stage was being set for a different kind of match. The senior senator from Texas versus the junior senator from Indiana. Benson was playing the expectation game, trying to build up his largely untested opponent. He's an excellent debater. He loves debates. Frankly, I'm not a debater. The Bush-Quail campaign believes expectations are low for Quail, so low that almost any points he scores will be viewed as a big plus. That's because of a series of campaign gaps. He once confused the facts regarding the Holocaust in Europe. It was an obscene period in our nation's history. And he sometimes has trouble saying what he means. He said there is nothing that a good defense cannot be a better offense. Quail's advisors now limit him to photo opportunities and prepared speeches. No ad-libbing, no answers to reporters' questions. Today's event was a pre-debate pep rally with campaign workers. And we are very, very proud of the job we know you're going to do tomorrow night in Omaha. And when reporters questioned him, Quail stuck to the line of the day. Can you just give us some sense of how you're getting ready? Tune in tomorrow night. Are you all nervous for Perry? Tune in tomorrow night. Both candidates are resting up and rehearsing for what will be their biggest opportunity of the campaign to either help or hurt their ticket. Andrea Mitchell, NBC News, Washington. By the way, you can see that debate here on KNDU at 930 tomorrow night. Coming up still tonight, some cooling is in the air. And weatherman Peter Fields says even a chance of sprinkles by tomorrow. First here are tonight's daily game winners. It's hot. It's cool. It's only $2.99 at Bob's. Now, JB. That's a hot price for a quick, cool lunch. It's JB's quick, cool. Hot. All-you-can-eat lunch buffet. For only $2.99. Now, that's hot. All the fresh green garden salad you can eat. That's cool. Plus all the hot soups and nachos. That's hot. All along with JB's meat pasta and fresh fruit bar. That's cool and hot. Bob's now JB's cool, quick. Hot. All-you-can-eat lunch buffet. For only $2.99. That's hot. It's cool. It's JB's. Remember the good old days? Fun times, weren't they? Community picnics, get-togethers, such good times. But they weren't good times to be sick. We didn't have the effective medicines we have today. Medical care and drugs have improved so much over the years. I'm glad I'm living today because I know I'm going to be able to do something. I'm going to be able to do something. I'm going to be able to do something. I'm going to be able to do something. I'm going to be able to do something. today because I know that when one of my family gets sick, we see our doctor. And when we need medicine, we go to Payless. Thank you. I can always count on my Payless pharmacist for prompt, courteous, professional prescription service at an affordable price. Peter Fields is certified by the National Weather Association. Well, that weak storm has managed to come on board across into the central basin, but no rain with it, just some high cloudiness. I'll show you what I mean in a minute. Temperature, 59 degrees, barometer 2992. That is sea level pressure. It is rising. Our humidity, 68 percent. The winds are out of the northeast at six miles per hour. Low this morning, 47. High today was 80 degrees. Now let's check on our weather watchers. Temperatures this past hour, generally in the 50s, 54 in Umatilla, called Lori Foster. And she said it was a beautiful day there today in Kennewick there, 59 and over there in Pasco, 52 degrees under fair skies, just some high clouds drifting around. But as we go to the coast, a little bit of light rain now falling around Seattle, also in Olympia, the temperature of 57 degrees. Light rain along the immediate coast there, 55 in Astoria, 56 degrees in Hoquiam, and 56 degrees also in Quileute. Measurable rain there today, about 1300s of an inch. Now let's take a look at that satellite photograph. Here it is, that weak storm, which managed to come on board. It's very, very weak. It's running into a very powerful ridge of high pressure situated out here. So it's having a tough time really to get through and to generate any measurable rainfall of any quantity. Heaviest rain now is falling along the central Oregon coast with some light rain, as I mentioned, being reported there around Hoquiam and Quileute. As you see, the clouds arch all the way down into almost the Los Angeles area, which is a first for this time of year to get a front to that far south. Then we have a break in the action as a nice big ridge of high pressure is building up. And that'll deflect this next storm up and over us, so that shouldn't bother us. So once we get through these high clouds, it looks like we're going to have more sunshine on the way for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. A nice weekend shaping up weather-wise, as far as I can see. Again, these storms should all be deflected to the north of us due to another area of high pressure building out there to the west. Now as we take a look at the national picture for tomorrow, not a pretty one out on the Rockies. Some rain showers falling and, yep, snow falling across sections of the Great Lakes into western sections of New York with temperatures on the cool side. Tomorrow the Big Apple only getting up to a high temperature of 58, Atlanta getting up to 68. But we'll see some sunshine across sections of the Mississippi Valley and also there the northern plains where they had some cool nights the last couple nights. Sunshine across the southwest. Now let's take a look at our forecast tonight. Increasing clouds with the Tri-Cities, mostly high clouds, low temperatures in the upper 40s to 50s, and tomorrow partly cloudy temperatures in the middle 70s. The variable winds at 10 miles per hour. For the Walla Walla Valley, fair tonight, high clouds drifting around, maybe a sprinkle around the blues. And tomorrow partly cloudy, high temperatures in the 70s. And for the Hermiston and Pendleton area, increasing clouds, high clouds. And tomorrow, looking at a partly cloudy day, temperatures generally in the mid to upper 70s. Westerly winds at 10 miles per hour, afternoon overnight low in the 40s to low 50s. Checking our extended forecast, partly cloudy Thursday and then Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Looking pretty good as another ridge of high pressure core builds back into the region for more sunshine. Alright Peter, thank you. Still to come tonight, bringing retirement dollars to help keep a sluggish economy floating and how the girls can get the man they want and raise money for charity at the same time. Four people were killed when a train loaded with explosives rammed into a coal train in the Soviet Union. About 900 miles east of Moscow, the boxcar apparently rolled down a slope stretch of track. Explosion blew a crater 180 feet wide and almost 30 feet deep. The blast blew down 20 buildings including 12 homes. 87 people were hospitalized. A nearby oil and fuel store erupted into flames shortly after the boxcar collision. Today's rail disaster in the Soviet Union is the latest in a series of railway crashes. 28 people were killed in August in a commuter train derailment near Moscow. Near Jennings, Louisiana, a tanker truck carrying hazardous chemicals burst into flames after smashing into another truck carrying steel pipe. 500 people in the community of Jennings had to be evacuated. Schools were closed and airspace above the toxic cloud rising out of the wreck had to be restricted. Police closed both lanes of traffic leading up to the bridge. The truck was carrying chemicals used to make dynamite. Washington's employment picture looked a little brighter in August than it did in July. According to State Employment Commissioner Isaiah Turner, the unemployment rate for the state fell to 6.1 percent for the month of August. That's down from 6.4 percent in July of this year and 6.7 percent for the same period last year. Turner says the most significant changes in the job picture were in the Seattle-Everett area. Locally, the Tri-City showed an unemployment rate of 8.9 percent for the month of August. Elsewhere in the state, the lowest jobless rate could be found in San Juan County, reporting 2.8 percent and the highest in the state, 14.2 percent, was reported in Okanagan County. One of the overlooked aspects of a diversifying economy, senior citizens, many on fixed incomes looking for a comfortable, affordable place to live. The Sun Country Retirement Bureau is increasingly trying to draw retirement dollars to this area that used to pass by the Tri-Cities altogether. New Center's Jim Snyder reports. The newly formed Bureau has diversification in mind and their focus is on the lucrative retirement market. Art and Jenny Iniguez of Pittsburgh, California are the first visitors under the new program. They say a small ad in their local newspaper convinced them to come to the Tri-Cities for a look. We're trying to get away from all this congestion that we have. You've got to stand in line for everything. You've got to fight freeways. We've been doing that all our lives and we want to get away from that, you know, like a lot of retirees. And we love the price of the homes and good homes. They look like good, solidly built homes and the prices are real reasonable. I've shown all of Kennewick and then all of Pasco down the river, river frontage basically is what we were looking at. The Iniguez say they're attracted to the local river system and the friendliness of the people here. Because they're the first to be hosted, they've gotten special attention. The couple will be featured in a promotional video being produced to attract more potential retirees. The visitors say they would like to see more docks and marinas on the Columbia and less haze in the air. But all in all they'll take a favorable view of the area back home with them. And in an industry where word of mouth is the most valuable advertising of all, that's very important. When I left the plant where I work, all my fellow workers knew I was coming over here. And they've already asked me, find out all you can, take a lot of pictures and let us know because we may take a drive down there and look it over ourselves. The Iniguez say they haven't decided yet where they'll retire, but the Tri-Cities is an option. An option they wouldn't even have considered if it hadn't been for a small article in their local paper and a large dose of hospitality once they got here. Jim Snyder, New Center 25, Kennewick. All right, single women, pay attention. As many as 23 eligible men are up for auction this Friday at the Pasco Red Lion to raise money for the March of Dimes. It's the fourth annual auction, lots of the same good looking people and still lots of real good date packages. We have trips to Seattle, a trip to British Columbia and a couple of ski trips to Mount Bachelor as well as some local trips that are just dinners and dancing basically. This year there's also an added attraction, a fashion show sponsored by the Bond where there's a promise to answer the touchy topic of how high the hemline should be. We'll be excited to show you that the skirt lengths range from the short just below or just above the knee to the long down into the mid calf. Back out to the mid calf. You gonna be in that thing? I don't know, I'm not gonna be in it. I might go watch it, see who's gonna buy who. Being a single man you are. How about some baseball, right? Let's try that. Game one of the National League Championship Series. Dodgers had it in hand for a while tonight. People in LA definitely got their money's worth. Great ball game tonight. We've got lots of highlights coming up next. The new Ford Probe. Test drive the Ford Probe at your local Northwest Ford dealer today. Bob, now JB's popping shrimp corn chicken. No JB's shrimp and popcorn chicken for just $4.99. Okay look in the camera. JB's shrimp and popcorn chicken for just $4.99. Oh you can eat. I know that. Okay so say, action. Look, get the chicken, get the shrimp plus nice garden salad, get a baked potato. So say JB's all you can eat shrimp and popcorn chicken for just $4.99. Say like boy that's a lot of good stuff. Okay ready. Why is this a lot of good stuff? Got you. America's changing. There's a shortage of trained truck drivers and heavy equipment operators are needed all over our country. So if you're ready for a career that will make a difference to you and America, call Superior Training Services today. Call, because if America doesn't keep moving, I'm going to be real upset. You couldn't ask for a more exciting finishing game one of the National League Championship Series being played in Los Angeles. The Never Say Die New York Mets come up with three runs in the top of the ninth to clip the LA Dodgers 3-2. Seems Magic Johnson prefers any sporting event but basketball these days enjoying the action at Dodger Stadium. Dwight Gooden pitched a dandy of a game for the Mets giving up two runs on four hits and fanning 10 through 7 innings. Kurt Gibson caught looking here. But Oral Hersheiser was equal to the task. He kept the Mets scoreless until the ninth. Gary Carter goes down here but that wouldn't be all for the Mets catcher as he says a few words to himself. Bottom of the seventh now one to nothing Dodgers. Mike Sosha on third. Alfredo Griffin laces one to right. Sosha comes in to score. That would give the Dodgers a two to nothing lead. And Mets manager Davy Johnson saying what do I do next? Well don't worry you have Darryl Strawberry at the plate in the ninth. Straw responds with a double in the gap in right center field. That's good enough to score Greg Jeffries and the Mets are back in it at two to one. That would be it for Hersheiser who gave up seven hits and fan six before giving way to Jay Howland. A pretty good ovation. Then with two men on and one out Gary Carter makes up for a strike out earlier with a single to center. Strawberry scores. Kevin McReynolds is being waved home. Watch this crash landing at the plate for the winning run. The Mets hold on and win game one three to two. Game two set for Dodgers Stadium on Wednesday. And Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson vows he'll be back to claim another gold medal in the 100 meter dash in the Olympics. Johnson had his world record in gold medal stripped from him after testing positive for steroids in his first public statement since the incident. Johnson denied any use of steroids. I've never ever nearly taken a legal drug and I would never embarrass my family, my friends, my country and the kids who love me. My mother taught me that there's the only way to win and plan to come back. Johnson won his gold medal in the 100 meter dash beating Carl Lewis with a world record time of nine point seven nine seconds before and after the Olympics. Johnson said his main goal was to beat Carl Lewis. Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson got a second opinion today and the opinion from this psychiatrist is that he isn't now and never has been a manic depressive. After examining the Ironman, Dr. Abraham Halpern said the boxer showed no sign of abnormality. Tyson has been urged to seek help from his wife actress Robin Givens. Dr. Halpern says the heavyweight champ is under some tension and the best thing for him would be to get back in the ring. Turning to football now, it's once again time for the KNDU Big Five poll. The Kennewick Lions and the Richland Bombers are tied for the top spot in this week's poll, both with 31 votes and a very complicated system. Burbank checks in at number two after beating up on Ki B last week. The Riverview Panthers are in the third spot followed by Kamiakin and Ki B. Tomorrow we'll preview our game of the week between Richland and Pasco. The Richland girls soccer team was roughed up a bit but showed they were equal to the task, beating Kennewick 3 to nothing this afternoon. Bomber coach Steve Wurl had nothing but praise for the Lions in a very physical contest. Great day for soccer too at Hanford High School this afternoon. First half action, Bombers in yellow leading one to nothing. Julie Meyer scores her second goal of the half. Watch this, a beauty shot into the left corner of the net. That made it two to nothing, Richland. Real physical game today. Take a look at this collision coming up. That's got to hurt. Richland adds a second half goal and wins it three to nothing. Elsewhere, Pasco moves to five, two and one with a two to nothing win over Walla Walla this afternoon. Darcy Fitzpatrick and Norma Peralta each scored goals for the Lady Bulldogs who face Kamiakin Saturday. In the Mid Valley League tonight, Ralph Sanders, Hanford Falcons continue to pour it on, blasting Wapato 11 to nothing. Brenda Young, Sarah Persley and Chris McGuire all added two goals for the Lady Falcons who go to seven and oh on the year. Ralph Sanders has some good programs there at Hanford. Good ballplayers out there too. Thank you Tom. We'll be back with a couple final stories for you or one final story for you when we come back. Stay with us. It's true. This days after the Olympics, believe it or not, where the movers and shakers do their thing a new fashion trend is emerging and it began during last week's Olympics. Doug Kregel has a report. Those long painted fingernails worn by Florence Griffith Joyner sometimes match sometimes clash but they are always long and this 28 year old stylish lady from LA, the fastest woman in the world is already having an impact on fashion here in Los Angeles. Women in beauty salons watching Flojo run are already adopting some of her high style ways. Many women believe that long painted acrylic fingernails didn't go with athletics but Flojo is changing that according to manicurists. Big impact, a big impact. With her running with those nails, she's bringing it in, those nails are great. It's going to be a big impact with the business. Many people thought you couldn't do things like athletics with nails. You can do anything you want to. Of course shops that specialize in fancy long nails have been growing rapidly in Southern California the past eight years. There's even been a price war and the status of manicurists has been steadily rising. With the acrylic nails since they've been out and he has taken the manicurists out of the back of the salon and now she's what's happening in the salon. Indeed now Flojo has proven that long nails won't even interfere with Olympic relay handoffs. Although to some men some of these long beautiful nails look like they should be registered with the police as weapons. Doug Kriego for NBC News. In a nice beautiful rock right next to them. It's probably going to be a lot bigger here in the near future. Coming up. Alright. Jim Snyder will be here at 725 in the morning. First news tomorrow. See you tomorrow night at 6 and 11. Goodnight.
