It could be a lot of fun. That's what happens if you stay out a little bit too long. Third down play for the Raiders. Trader across the middle, completes it, and then it's fumbled or incomplete. We'll have to wait and see. Tim Brown had it, but did he have it long enough? Did he have control? I don't even know who has the football done in all that mess. Incomplete pass. I didn't think he really had control, so Jurgensen says incomplete, and it brings up a Raider fourth down. Well, now that's again a drop pass that's hurt the drive. It's hurt Trader. I mean, he's right on target with this ball. Tim Brown is supposed to catch this thing. Sure, it slowed him up a little bit, but he's supposed to make that kind of catch. That catch, the one Steve Smith dropped, those kind of things hurt an offensive team. Wayne Davis finally wound up with a football, I think, but it was an incomplete pass. And they're going to try a field goal, a long field goal here. The bar is on. Chris Barr is going to attempt a field goal, and it's going to be 58 yards. He's got a little wind in his favor. 53 yards. So from long range, Chris Barr comes up short on a 53-yard field goal attempt, and the ball goes over to Buffalo with a minute 48 remaining in the first half, and Buffalo leading the Raiders 17 to 7. You see the missed field goal by Barr. Meantime, they've announced an update on the Cincinnati Houston score here, and the crowd reacts wildly as Warren Moon is tossed a touchdown pass, and the Oilers leading the Bengals now 21 to 3. There may be a lot of football playing here at Rich Stadium in the playoffs. They will put it in the air. Pass deflected and incomplete. Couldn't see who batted it down. It might have been Wise, number 90. He knocked one back into Kelly's face earlier. Now this is the time of the game that I'm not too sure this is the right thing for Buffalo to be doing, trying to get some more points on the board by throwing. As good as Buffalo's defense has been playing, and as poorly as the Raiders now have been dropping passes and making penalties, you don't want to make a mistake here offensively. The feels don't. Kakel knocked that last one away. Here's Kelly under pressure, falls down, but gets back up and plays still alive. Still standing, finally sacked. Sacked by Greg Townsend, all the way back to the 26-yard line of the Bills. So Jim Kelly's last six passing attempts have been incomplete, and that one goes in the books as his second sack of the day. Well, at least he held on to the ball and didn't put it up in the air for grabs that time. The Raiders are getting some pretty good pressure back there, but Kelly's able to put off the sack for a little while. Now the Raiders have called timeout. There's a minute and 33 seconds left on the clock, and they have the Bills in a third down and long situation, like 18 yards or so. So Townsend called timeout, and they're going to try and stop the Bills here. Maybe the Raiders can get another shot at a score. The Raiders have one timeout remaining. Mike Shanahan using his second one there to stop the clock, with a minute and 33 seconds left. Third and 19 coming up for Kelly. That's the timeout situation. Well, what you want to do with the Buffalo, you don't want to make the turnover. You want to force the Raiders to use their last timeout. So I'd look for them to do something pretty safe here. Maybe a draw play or some kind of quick hitter up the middle. I wouldn't expect Kelly or the Bill offense to take a chance. Look at all that snow over there. Well, I spotted Santa in the stands there, and of course the Bill's hoping for a gift, a Christmas gift. If the Oilers can defeat the Bengals today, they'd be back in the driver's seat for a home field advantage all the way through the playoffs. They tried to do a little touch pass, and didn't have anything on it at all. Well, they tried to set the screen up to Harmon over there, but he threw a bad pass, and now they're going to have to punt to the Raiders who should have good field position. Here you see Kelly looking downfield, but what's 33? Harmon. He'll slip over here now for the screen pass, and Kelly just sticks it in the ground. Seven in a row, incomplete now from Jim Kelly. John Kidd will punt. It's been an adventure for him today. Last one was only 25 yards. There's Tim Brown looking to give the Raiders good field position again. That was a poor series of down off offensively for the Deals. They're giving the Raiders a good opportunity here to get some momentum before halftime. Kidd gets a better punt this time. Good high punt that Brown calls for a fair catch and takes it at the 35. So Kidd finally got off a good one after two subpar punts earlier. That one went for 38 yards. Jay Schrader warming his hands as he comes on for a final offensive try in this first half. One minute, 20 seconds left. The Bills leading the Raiders 17-7. Shanahan's team has moved the ball, but some costly turnovers have kept them from getting more points. Turnovers, also the dropped passes and the illegal procedure penalty. All these things add up to throw an offense out of sync. The Raiders, the players just aren't playing smart ball right now. 50% of his passes today for 85 yards. Schrader trying to set up a screen. It looked like a middle screen. Now he goes down field. Fernandez was closest to it, but the ball went out of bounds. Was that a screen or not? He had receivers down field too. Yeah, he had receivers down field, but no linemen. They were trying to set a screen up over to the right side, but the Buffalo defense would have none of it. They played it well. They didn't really put pressure on Schrader that time. They stayed at home for the draw or the screen. And what you'd have to say is the Bill defense outguessed the Raider offense that time. Schrader now 5 of 11 in the passing stats for the first half. Stay with us at halftime. All the gang at NFL Live to give you the highlights of the early starting games thus far. Frank DeFord actually I think is here in Buffalo. He's going to get the key to the city for saying nice things about this town on NFL Live. Schrader's second down pass behind Marcus Allen and incomplete. The clock with a minute seven left third down coming up for Los Angeles. Well, the Raiders adjust a little out of sync. Schrader goes to the right receiver that time. Marcus Allen, but Marcus couldn't adjust. The ball was a little bit behind him. And Schrader, I think, has been putting the ball in the right places. And once again, had he not had to drop passes would be saying a different Raider offense. But they're hurting themselves with drop balls and penalties. Two quarterbacks in this game got off to blazing starts. Jim Kelly and Jay Schrader. Now Kelly has thrown seven straight incomplete and Schrader has missed his last six. He's down in the pocket. Complete to Fernandez. Flag goes down. Fernandez might have been out of bounds and then come back in. Derrick Burrows was in the game and defending for the Bills. Fernandez standing right next to the sideline. Did he go out first Joe? Yeah, I believe that's what they're going to call. He was mighty close to the sideline. And if he went out and came back in. That's what the ruling is folks. Fernandez didn't know where he was. And for a veteran like Fernandez, even though he's fairly fresh in the NFL, he's played enough ball to know. Look at him. His left foot is out of bounds. He's supposed to know where he is on the field. Another mental layer that well these things are adding up to destroy the Raiders. Gossett's punt. Flip Johnson calls for a fair catch. And then his hit. Flag down. Stefan Adams was down in a hurry. And though Johnson had called for the fair catch, Adams blasted him. Well you see what happened is Johnson called for the fair catch. He was 10 yards away from the ball. And then when he ran forward to make the catch, Adams didn't know that he had singled for the fair catch. He must have missed a single. Fair catch interference. Number 44. Kicking team. 15 yards. First down. Well as Al Davis is probably muttering to himself up here in the press box somewhere. The mistakes are killing us. Oh yeah. You'll watch. You'll watch. Flip Johnson run up on the ball. Watch. Now here he comes. Now Adams was being blocked over there you see. And that's the reason he couldn't see what happened to white drain. Number 45 was occupying Adams and Adams never saw the fair signal. Fair catch signal. So will the Bills try to strike here with 52 seconds left. Nickel defense on for the Raiders. First down at the Raider 48. Ronnie Harmon taking the snap and going straight forward. Linden King made the stop. Here's our 10 minute ticker again. That's that Oilers score we told you about. 21-3 after a warm-up. Green Bay added a field goal on Minnesota. The game is tough to figure out isn't it. It sure is. You know Dallas really needs a win badly too if you're looking around the league and think of teams that really need a lift. A booster for Morrell. Dallas Cowboys that have to be the team. Scott Norwood trying to keep warm on the sideline with a couple of practice kicks he may be called on here. If the Bills can get it a little closer for it. The ball spotted. At about the 44 yard line of the Los Angeles Raiders. You see the things that led to this. We had a drop ball by Marcus Allen yet Fernandez leaving the playing field for the catch. Mistakes that the Raiders are making. These are the things that are hurting them. Bills aren't doing that much to hurt the Raiders. We haven't talked much about that New England game. New England they're already in the third quarter and they play at Denver next Saturday. Important for the Raider fans of course because Denver enters today's play in that three way tie with Seattle and the Raiders for the AFC Western title. Next Saturday 330 here on NBC. The Patriots and the Broncos. We understand that New England was going to go with Tony Easton at quarterback today replacing Doug Flutie who had not lost a game that he had started at Sullivan Stadium. No score in the third quarter. Kelly's pass. Incomplete. Good defensive play by Rod Fellows who knocked it away from Burkett at the last minute. Fellows in good position knocked the ball away. That's the second time Fellows has been right on the spot. Sure early in the game they completed two on him. But meantime he broke up a deep pass in the first quarter. Right here you can see the effort he gets in there and gets his hand on the ball. The ball was well thrown but Fellows made a good recovery to close on it. His ankle doesn't appear to be injured or hurting him much. Looked good there. The eight year veteran out of Missouri. Third and six. Kelly across the middle. And it's complete inside the 30 yard line. The catch made by Tremaine Johnson with Lionel Washington all over him. It covers 16 yards and the clock ticks away. Kelly stops the clock with a quick pass to the ground which I'm sure all the fans realize now is illegal. We've seen it on numerous occasions. Seems more to me this year than ever before. No it's legal but it's such an ugly play. I'll tell you I like it better when the quarterback stepped back and at least looked at least had to throw the ball to the sidelines. I've been here for a while on a rare occasion you'd see the quarterback intercepted just trying to throw the ball away. I think they've taken away a bit of an excitement a bit of an exciting play by allowing the quarterback to step back and throw it in the ground. They're going to take a shot at the end zone here. 22 seconds left. The ball at the 29 yard line of the Raiders. Buffalo leading 17-7 second quarter. Harmon running by Ronnie Harmon. He's inside the 25 down to about the 23 where he's stopped by Bill Pickell. And Buffalo takes a timeout to stop the clock with 16 seconds left. And the ball spotted at about the 23 yard line so it'd be about a 40 yard field goal for Norwood. See that he has had an excellent year. 30 field goals which is just five short of the NFL single season record. And it's important that the Bills get this as close as they can because we do have a little wind coming from right to left on the field. And the longer the farther away Norwood has to kick from if he is called upon to try the field goal the more the wind is going to affect the flight of the ball. Here you see the flags blowing right to left. And for a right footed kicker if he just hooks it a hair that wind will take over and just push the thing all the way out of the way from the upright. Norwood's 30 field goals by the way is a Buffalo record. Five short of the NFL record. He's had 70 field goals in his four years with Buffalo. The club record is 74 for career field goals. Now he's going to try one more play. 16 seconds left. Hand it off to Riddick. Riddick has a first down. The help means anything. He finally wrestled out of bounds. And this will set up a chip shot now by Norwood. He's inside the 10. That's what they needed to do. Now we have 10 seconds in the first down on the clock folks. I think Buffalo should try at least one more try for the touchdown to get it in the end zone. They haven't used their last time out yet. Even if they complete the ball short within 10 seconds they should be able to call a timeout if need be. I'd go for the touchdown once again. Marv Levy agrees. What kind of play would you call? I'd call a pass play something that I can hit my man around the five yard line or closer to the end zone. Any one of the four receivers is a foul receiver. Following that script goes for the end zone. Crosses it over the head of everyone. Trumaine Johnson was closest to it. Kelly not seeing anything. Just threw it away. And Norwood will come on for the field goal attempt. Scott Norwood in his college days with James Madison. Once kicked a winning field goal in a football game then went on to a soccer game and scored the winning goal. That double duty guy huh? So you know the reason Kelly didn't throw that ball away in the last play folks is I want to point out Lionel Washington the cornerback for the Raiders was all over the receiver. In fact he took the pattern away from the receiver that time. The receiver wanted to get to the corner and Washington would have none of it. Excellent defensive cover. 30 yard field goal attempt by Norwood. 20 seconds left. Scott Norwood is 2 for 2 in the field goal department today. And the Buffalo Bills close the first half with a field goal putting them up by a 27 mark. So the fans in the cold weather at Ritz Stadium celebrating an excellent first half for the Buffalo Bills. They lead the Raiders 20 to 7. Now let's go to NFL Live. Alright Tom Bobkoster is back along with Paul McGuire. Houston leads Cincinnati in the House of Pain 21 to 3. And as we speak Houston has just called a timeout and they've got the ball deep in Bengal territory. They might add to it an unhappy day so far for Boomer Esiason and Sam Wyche and a big day for Mike Rozier. Well over 100 yards rushing in the first half alone. He just bowls people over here on this 13 yard scoring jump and they lead 7 nothing. Now early in the second quarter Rozier again this one from 15 yards as he cuts back against the grain and they go up 14 nothing. Now the Bengals were able to get on the board with a field goal following this strange play off the play action fake. Moon throws. Carl Zander dropping back in coverage makes the interception and then is promptly knocked down by his own man Reggie Williams the veteran linebacker. They settle for a Jim Breach field goal. Now off the fake option pitch here's the toss to Curtis Duncan for the Warren Moon touchdown pass. That made it 21-3 which is where it stands now but as I said the Oilers are threatening taking a quick glance. Moon is back to throw. He's throwing for the end zone and overthrows his intended receiver with 14 seconds left so they're getting near where they might have to try a field goal. All right let me there's some things that we got to talk about here first of all I guess okay I said that Houston has to run the ball in order to win which they're doing that very well. The most amazing thing about this game is here's Cincinnati that averages over 30 points a game. Not only do they only have three points Bob but they only have 37 yards of total offense in the first half as opposed to Houston over 250. And obviously the fans watching in your hometown of Buffalo hoping that the Bills can seize the advantage again for home field edge have to be happy. They're club playing well against the Raiders and unless the Bengals stage a miracle comeback and it's tough to do in Houston it'll be Buffalo that'll have the advantage. Zendejas just kicked a field goal so they go up 24-3 Houston. So it'll be nice for the championship game in Buffalo. Still a ways to go yet. We'll wait and see. Detroit is playing at Chicago the quarterbacks are Harbaugh and Hilger and the game is tied at three at Soldier Field in the third quarter. Minnesota playing at Green Bay the Vikings had a first and goal at the four early in the second quarter came away with nothing. Chuck Nelson missed an 18 yard field goal attempt. Green Bay making it difficult on the 10 and 4 Vikings. The pack coming in at 2 and 12 the Vikes perhaps looking ahead to the final Monday night game of the year when they might have a chance at the Metrodome to seize the division title as they go head to head with the Bears. But first they've got to take care of the Packers and they trail 10 to 3. In the game you're watching Buffalo up on the Raiders 20 to 7 in Buffalo and your thoughts on this one. Well the Buffalo Bills they just have not really had a great running game all year long and with Thurman Thomas closer over 100 yards in this ball game. Turnovers J Schrader from well twice responsible for 10 of the points that Buffalo has gotten but their defense they're doing it again holding the Raiders to only seven points in the first half. You told me the Giants would have no trouble with the Chiefs. Well it's seven to three Kansas City giving them a game in the third quarter. Your thoughts on that. Well I think the Giants are going to come back and finally stuff the Chiefs and win the game by what was it nine and a half I think to spread or 10. They'll cover that. Couple of highlights we want to show you from that game and apparently we're we are going we just make it up as we go along and we are going to show you these highlights which begin with Harry Carson and George Martin a couple of giant defensive legends apparently preceding their final regular season home game and they're saluted by the fans. And now on the Giants opening drive which was sparked by Joe Morris's 44 yards rushing on that drive alone. It's capped by a Mark Bavaro touchdown reception of 12 yards from Phil Sims. Nick Lowry has a 31 yard field goal for the Chiefs early in the third quarter. The Giants lead it seven to three. The Cowboys and the Redskins. Let's see if this one has gone half and it has the Cowboys leading 10 to three trying to snap a 10 game losing streak. They've played some games during that stretch where they have come close and they've been frustrated. Today they lead at RFK. You know it's funny this used to be the game of the year during the regular season. Everybody looked forward to it whether it was in Dallas or in Washington late in the season. It was almost always a game with playoff implications. Well the Redskins do have some very slim chance to make the playoffs as a wild card. Everything has to fall into place. It's a virtual impossibility and the Cowboys are two and 12 10 3 Dallas and Tampa Bay playing at 10 to 3. Tampa Bay playing at New England the Patriots just scored in the third quarter. They go in front seven to nothing. Tony Eason starts the game at quarterback. Doug Flutie had been six and three as their starter. But the feeling by Raymond Berry was that against Tampa Bay's defense which is tough against the run they had to get a passing game going. And as you know with Flutie as their quarterback they played it very close to the vest. And that's how they started Eason who had a terrible first half. He went three of eight for 26 yards. Had a pass intercepted in the end zone. They were booing him all over the stadium. But Eason came back out. He started the second half as well and he has guided them to a touchdown. The Patriots have the lead in the third quarter seven to nothing. When we come back we'll be joined by Frank DeFord with his halftime commentary and we'll do it right after these messages from your local stations. Have you seen enough? Yes. Rated PG. Starts Wednesday December 14th at a theater near you. Fred Rogan's Sunday Night Sports. Tonight at 11. Welcome back to NFL Live and we're joined now by our good friend Frank DeFord who as usual has a suggestion for the National Football League. A constructive suggestion which the majordomos over on Park Avenue would do very well to heed. Thank you very much Bob. Proceed. Well you see about this time of year they start coming out with these figures showing what the interconference standings are. Right now for example the AFC is leading twenty seven to twenty one. The AFC always wins the stupid little games in October and then gets blown out in the Super Bowl. In this regard the AFC reminds me of the Democrats who win all the races for mayor and legislature all that nickel dime stuff but can't ever win the presidency. So I'm very suspicious how important this conference stuff really is especially since the whole league is screwed up geographically. Atlanta's in the west and Phoenix and Dallas in the east and so on. There haven't been any real traditional rivals since old Don Hudson and Bronco Nagurski. So what we need is a modern alignment Bob a modern alignment of the NFL only we should divide the league up by something that matters not geography playing surface. The two conferences would be the grass conference and the artificial conference. In the artificial conference there would be two divisions. The dome division will have Houston Indianapolis Detroit New Orleans Seattle Minneapolis and Dallas which doesn't have a whole dome but then it doesn't have a whole team either so. The other group in the artificial conference would be the synthetic division. These are the teams that play outside but on a manmade field Pittsburgh Philadelphia Cincinnati Buffalo New England Kansas City and Meadowlands one and Meadowlands one a. The good thing about this system is that the players coming out of college would get to decide whether they want to play in the grass conference and get muddy or play in the artificial conference and not have any knees when they get older. Now naturally there are also two divisions in the grass conference. First there's the tropical division where there is not only grass but where the grass never gets snowed on. This is Miami and Tampa Bay Phoenix San Diego San Francisco and the Rams and Raiders from La La Land. And last is the frosty division where there is not only grass underfoot but also wind and snow and sleet and stuff like that. The frosty division includes Cleveland Washington Chicago Atlanta Green Bay and Denver. Also I think that baseball should get rid of the old American and national leagues and adapt this arrangement as well. Put the St. Louis Cardinals and all the silly teams that hit singles and run around in circles put them in one league with artificial turf and Bob put the old fashioned teams all together in the other league with old fashioned grass. You know that the people in Atlanta are not going to be pleased that you place them in the frosty division. Well it does snow in Atlanta sometimes. Yes but it's very hot there at times as well. But nonetheless it is not subtropical like Orlando and south. Despite the little quibbles I believe this is an inspired idea. I'm glad to hear you say that another idea might be to name these divisions like the NHL after people. Maybe you could think about that. You know they name those things the Campbell division and the Smythe division. I don't know who's in the Smythe division and who's in the Norris division. Nobody does but that would make it even more interesting. I think for example the tropical division should be the Don Ho division. I like that. You like that? Yeah that's very nice. Maybe Sergeant Preston for the frosty division. The Yukon division. Yes absolutely. That would be good. And the dome division somebody with the dome. The synthetic division who might that be? How about the Jessica Rabbit? This is obviously a large gap in my cultural background. No in Roger Rabbit in you know the good book again. Oh she was in Roger Rabbit was she? Yes that's right. Well now that this conversation has taken a turn a decided turn toward the esoteric we proceed. Halftime at Ritz Stadium in Buffalo where the Bills try to bounce back from two consecutive losses. Had a big first half against the Raiders. And at intermission the Buffalo Bills leading the Los Angeles Raiders by a score of 20 to 7. We'll be back to Ritz Stadium for more halftime activity after this message from the NFL. Thank you, sir. You know these are great young people. And they're here learning a lot about how to enjoy life and avoid the pitfalls that all teenagers are faced with in our fast moving society. I'm Marcus Allen of the Los Angeles Raiders. And I work with these United Way volunteers to give counseling and guidance to young people in their formative years. For them, life is much like a ride on a merry-go-round. We all want to find enjoyment, happiness and reach for the brass ring. We all want to be winners. But sometimes a merry-go-round of life can go too fast. And the dangers of falling victim to the problems of drug and alcohol abuse or suicide can make any one of us fall. But with your support, United Way volunteers like this lady are not letting them fall. They're making your contributions count. I know it's working because she loves them and they love her. And I love her too. Because she's my mom. And like millions of volunteers across the nation, she's making a difference. Because United Way, it brings out the best in all of us. Right, Mom? This message furnished by the National Football League. Half-time at Rich Stadium in Buffalo on a chilly afternoon in western New York. But the fans loving it as the Buffalo Bills hold a 20-7 half-time edge on the Los Angeles Raiders. Here are some first-half highlights. The Buffalo Bills got an excellent run from their rookie Thurman Thomas, who pounded 37 yards up the middle after good blocking from the offensive line for a 37-yard score to put Buffalo in command of the game. The Raiders only score. Did you see Thomas with 91 first-half yards to lead all rushers in the game so far? The Raiders got their only score from in close as Steve Smith pounded it over from about one yard out. And the Raiders, though they have moved the ball fairly well at times, have been guilty of some costly mistakes that have hurt their chances in the first half. It's 20-7 as we get ready for the second half of play. Joe, it has been mistakes by the Raiders that have been the story of the half. That's right. I think Schrader's been quite pleased to be well putting the ball where he should be putting it most of the time. They've had dropped passes that have hurt their drives and stopped their drives. They've had some penalties that haven't been good. So I think the Raiders have hurt themselves more offensively than the Bulls defense. Of course, Smith made a big play knocking the ball loose from Schrader, but Schrader dropped the ball on his own in a draw play. And the Buffalo offense seems to have found itself now after a real subpar performance a week ago. Oh, sure. The offensive line's doing a good job in the running game, giving Kelly plenty of time to pass. And I guess they're right back in the hunt for this home field advantage now, the way the Houston-Cincinnati game is going. Things really going Buffalo's way with the Oilers with a substantial lead over the Bengals right now. What about the home field advantage? Do players dread coming to Buffalo to play? Yeah, they don't like the idea of coming here, not just because of the weather though, Tom. I mean, we're all talking about how cold it is and how nasty it can be later on in the year. But the turnout that these guys get here with the Bills, the 75,000 to 80,000 people in the stadium, does a whole lot to help control the emotion of the team during the game. They make a lot of noise that works against the Bills' opponent, and then they quiet down to help out Kelly and his offense. So it's more than just a weather advantage. Well, the fans have been great here, and turning out today at 8 degrees temperatures at game time, and a big crowd here. Perhaps enough we don't have the official attendance figures yet to break the all-time NFL home attendance record. Let's take a look, Joe, at the first half stats and see what we can see from the numbers. Well, the Bills are dominating every category, I guess, except yards passing, and that's been because of the turnovers of the Raiders. The Raiders looked all right for a while until they hurt themselves. Neither team has a lot of accuracy passing right now, but they've had some dropped balls. That turnover ratio right there, 2 to none, well, that tells most of the story offensively. How does the ball feel to a quarterback on a cold day like today? Is it harder than normal? It is. It feels harder. It's cold. The ball is slick. Of course, I don't know that the ball changes so much, but your hands get cold. Even with those muffs that Jay Schrader has on right now with the muff, you keep your hands reasonably warm, but that pigskin gets slick when it gets cold, and it's hard to throw. But hey, I haven't seen Schrader's accuracy suffering or Kelly's. I think there's been some good defensive plays by the Raider defensive backfield to knock down a few of Kelly's passes, and of course the Raider receivers have been dropping the ball on a couple of few occasions. Both quarterbacks had little mini slumps there at the end of the half. I think Kelly went seven straight incompletions and the Schrader six. So after hot starts, they cooled off a little bit. But as you said, a lot of those who are accounted for good defensive plays are simply dropped balls by the receivers. The Sun making a little showing here on one side of Rich Stadium. The snow banks along the sidelines are still there. We haven't had any real substantial snowfall since the game began. A couple of flurries, but the field has not been cleaned since before the game. They've got a sort of brush contraption that comes off to clean the astroturf of snow, and you see that it has done its work earlier with the snow drifts on the sideline. Well, they did clean the field a few times, but it has stopped snowing. The footing has been good, and the wind really hasn't been a major factor yet. Norwood's last field goal was a short attempt, so the wind didn't bother it. I haven't seen many long passes in the game yet to where the wind would affect them. So the weather is close to ideal with the exception of the temperature. Close to ideal. You told me before you said that the wind is the quarterback's biggest enemy, not the cold. Oh, sure. Not the rain. That's right. The wind does tricks with the ball, both against the quarterback and as well as in the kicking game, too. And we're ready for the second half kickoff, sponsored by Budweiser, the king of beers. Flip Johnson across the 20 to the 22 on the kickoff return for the Buffalo Bills. And we're ready to start the second half. Andy Parker downfield made the tackle for the Raiders, and Buffalo with the first offensive opportunity to open the second half, leading the Raiders by a 20 to 7 count. The play selection was very good for most of the first half on part of Buffalo. They mixed the run and pass very well, I thought. Yes, and I thought the Raiders did, too. The Raiders didn't execute as well, but both offenses have opened up, and they're mixing in the runs well. First down run by Jamie Mueller. Not much there. Mueller twists forward, got a couple. Andy Mueller. Matt Millen, very former Penn State linebacker, gets credit for the tackle. He was the all-pro back in 1985, and all-American from Penn State. A lot of talented Penn State linebackers on the field today. Oh, you know, Millen doesn't mind playing in this kind of weather. He played there in Penn State up there at College Park, and I guess he kind of likes it a little bit. He's mean enough not to feel the cold weather. Thomas, short of a 30-yard line and short of a first down. He's going to set up about third and five or so for the Bills. He's closing in on 100 yards, and we're just in the opening minutes of the third quarter. That's Russell Carter injured on the play. Well, while they tend to Carter, he gives us a chance to take a break. 14.02 left in the third, and Buffalo on top. You know, when you put down your hard-earned cash for a car, you want the carmaker to stand behind it, not walk away from it. 770 protection, seven years or 70,000 miles, you know that's still the longest powertrain protection in the business. And by RCA, number one with the toughest critics in the world. Tom Hammond, Joe Namath, and a cast of thousands here at Ritz Stadium braving the elements. As we have 14.02 left in the third quarter, Buffalo leading 20-7, and facing a third and three. Stacy Torren has replaced the injured Russell Carter in the secondary for the Raiders. Kelly and the teeth of the blitz sends it intended for harm and incomplete. Jerry Robinson coming on the blitz for the Raiders was in Jim Kelly's face. And Eddie Anderson was in good position to coverage, but it was Robinson, number 57, here you see on the screen, forcing Kelly to get this ball off just a little bit earlier than he'd like. So a good defensive stand by the Raiders on the opening series of the third quarter. And John Kidd is on to punt for the Buffalo Bills. Kelly perhaps banged his throwing arm a little bit there as he went down. Kidd with a punt sends it toward Tim Brown. Sherman Koukrov makes the recovery and another turnover for the Raiders. Their third of the day. Well folks, it's not a hard ball to handle. It's right there. And Tim Brown has caught many of these tight punts in this kind of weather up at Notre Dame. He just misplayed it and then he couldn't get back on it to recover it. You won't see Tim Brown mishandling many punts. Koukrov with a recovery. There he is. I'll tell you what, if the Raiders don't start playing better, you won't see many more of their games this season either. First down for the Buffalo Bills from the 11th. Thomas picks his way to the 5 to the 4 yard line. Van McElroy the free safety head to come up to stop Thomas. Who is coming up on a 100 yard rushing day. We mentioned earlier that Mike Rozier of Houston having a big day and Thurman Thomas limping to the sideline having surpassed the century mark. He was the number two rusher in Big 8 history with 4595 yards. Trailing only Mike Rozier. Harman comes in to replace Thomas. Third and fourth. There's Harman. He's to the one. It'll be close to a first down. The Bills can pick up a first down. Scott Davis on the tackle for the Raiders. Well if the Bills get in the end zone this time, they've got to feel mighty good. There's Davis who made the tackle the last play. The Bills would feel very good and comfortable with 27 points if they could get it in the end zone. And what we'd see I would hope would be the Raiders coming out there and throwing a lot of passes to those special wide receivers. I'd still like to see them get more action. This offense I know it's an offense of the 80s and it's a scheme type offense. But I'm not too sure that I'd be scheming with the offense with the kind of personnel I have in Lofton and Galton. Fernandez and Timmy Brown. My goodness. I know they run the ball a lot. The Raiders do to help pass protection. But I'm sure Shanahan's main concern right now is holding the Bills to just three points. Well you see a decision coming up for the Buffalo Bills. They were just short of the first down. It was well worth it. They were in the comments and they were a hundred yards to the right. And so they can still make a first down without scoring a touchdown. They spunked the ball on the two just inside the two yard line. And it'll be third down coming up. Riddick and Byrum are in at the running backs for the Bills. As Thomas and Carmen go out. I don't know if he made it or not. Mike Haynes not fooled on the play as Kelly faked it to Riddick and then kept it on a roll out. He didn't fool anyone with that fake. You see Kelly go ahead and pretend like he's giving it to Riddick and then try and sneak out around the corner. But Mike Haynes read the play all the way and so did Russell Carter. They were both in excellent position to stop Kelly. They're going to measure again to see if he picked it up. If it's fourth down, what do you do? Kick the field goal or go for it on fourth and inches? Well, I'd kick the field goal myself. That would force the Raiders to have to score three different times. Of course, the touchdown would be good. But I think at this stage of the game on fourth down you go for the field goal, especially with that lead and the way your defense has been playing. Well, you were on the same wavelength with Marv Levy in the first half, but not this time. He's going to go for it. And I don't understand why. What's he trying to put him away here? And he may very well be trying to put him away. But if the Raiders are able to rise to the occasion to stop it, it'll be a tremendous lift for the Raiders. So fourth and inches for Buffalo. Riddick and Byron with the running backs. Byron the fullback and Riddick the tailback in the eye formation. So the gamble pays off for the Buffalo Bills and Mike Shanahan and the Raiders, after turning the ball over, see it result in a Buffalo touchdown on the Riddick run. Jim Richard, number 51, and Will Walford did a tremendous job of blowing the Raiders off the line to enable the back to get into the touchdown. Riddick, I mean, it was just good blocking up front. Once again, they went to the weak side of the offense that time. They made a strength in the formation to the right and the Bills took it back to the weak side. I believe they fooled the Raiders as well. Riddick has now scored 12 rushing touchdowns this year. Norwood with the extra points and it's good. So a Tim Brown fumble returns into a Buffalo touchdown and with 1234 left in the third quarter, the Bills have upped their lead. Don't wait for something good to happen. Make it happen with the clean masculine scent of English leather cologne. English leather, some guys have it all. Now, isn't that a beautiful car? Pretty thing, isn't it? Oh, yes, yes. Rob Riddick, who led the NFL in scoring last year before he was injured in November, has scored his 12th rushing touchdown of the year. And it puts the Buffalo Bills up 20 now on the Los Angeles Raiders. Buffalo has gotten 10 total points off Raider turnovers in the game. Scott Norwood with a kickoff sponsored by Budweiser, the king of beers. Adams takes it out of bounds and they'll have to kick over. They'll take it at the 35 yard line. They have that option. Thank you, Joe. Joe just whispered to me, they'll take it at the 35. You know, the Bills are happy with that. What they're trying to do is not put the ball in Tim Brown's hands. And I believe Norwood's kicking the ball short to the right side to keep it away from Tim Brown. Brown leads the NFL in kickoff returns coming into today's game. Well, the Raiders are going to have to go up top. I mean, they're wasting time at the running game now. They're down 20 points. They've got to open it up. You're going to get your wish. You're going to see Aaron out for those wide receivers. No, you're not. Bo Jackson up the middle to the 40 where Leon Seals makes the tackle. Now this bill defense has suffered some injuries during the course of the game. Art Still has sprained his knee. And Shane Conlon has re aggravated a foot injury and they are not on the field and will not return today. It's a good thing they have a 20 point lead. Two key members of that excellent bill defense sidelined by injuries today. Second and fourth. Bo again. Bo's got a first down and more. He's in the bill territory to the 45 yard line. Leonard Smith and Mark Kelso were hanging on to Bo for dear life and finally got him down. But it went for 14 yards and maybe you don't have to throw if you've got a Bo Jackson. That's right. I mean, they're making it look so easy right now. Huge hole up front by Chris Ream that opened it up the left guard. Now, if they can get running gainers like that, sure, they don't have to put the ball in the air. But right now, the bills are probably paying pass. They were probably playing pass on the last down. But why there was such a big hole? First down play once again, Bo Jackson. Once again, good yardage crosses the 40 down to the 39 yard line. Ray Bentley making the tackle for the Buffalo Bills. Well, let's update the scores for you. The Houston lead over Cincinnati now 24 to 3. It's turning into a big day for the Buffalo Bills and their fans. Chicago leading four over the Lions. Green Bay still with that touchdown lead on Minnesota, which is the surprise of the day. I'll say it is. Kansas City's in there hot with the Giants. That's a close game. New England finally breaking that scoreless tie. Seven nothing. 27-7 here at Rich Stadium. Bo and Schrader ran together. Bo finally got the handoff and has stopped short of the first down by about a yard. Bentley and Talley sandwiched him at that point. Well, if you're the Raiders and you're getting yardage the way they have been these last four carries or so, you'd want to keep the ball on the ground. Things are looking good for them. Right now, they haven't decided whether they have a first down or not. The officials are still trying to size it up and they're going to bring the chains out there. I said it was short. We're going to see. A little measure as Shadahead looks on from the sideline. And just by half the football, they do have a first down. So Schrader, keeping the ball on the ground, has a first down. What do you call that outfit he's wearing under his helmet there? You ever wear one of those? No, I didn't. I see Bo doesn't have one on, but he has the visor on. I don't know whether that's a ski hat or what that he has on. Bo wears that visor that I think is a good idea. I think some quarterback should be wearing it too. It helps to take their eyes and hide them. Vance Mueller is on the field now with Steve Smith as both Jackson and Allen are on the sideline. Schrader looking to pass. Completes the pass to the 30-yard line. Making the reception was Andy Parker, the tight end. Bernadius Bennett covering on the play for the Buffalo Bills. Bennett, one of those new wave of NFL linebackers. Hey, what's the new wave or new thing we have just seen by the Raiders and that's the one that are tight end. I mean, since this new system has come into play, the wide receiver, the tight ends have been taken out of the passing game, practically taken out. And this is the first time they've gone to the tight end today. Only the third reception of the year by Parker. Here's Marcus Allen. Thrown back after taking it almost to the 25-yard line. Leon Seals has come in to replace Art Still. Gets the tackle for the Buffalo Bills. Well, the tight end was so much a part of the Raider offense. Todd Christensen injured, but only had 11 catches when he went down. I know, they just haven't been using the tight end enough in this game. Of course, it's a new system and the fellas on the team are just getting acclimated to it this season. But you've got to be able to work that tight end into your offense more. It helps the wide receivers avoid double coverage. First down for the Raiders. From the 25 of the Bills. Again, they keep it on the ground. And Bo Jackson keeps the legs pounding. Takes it down inside the 15-yard line. Seals and Kelso. Well, the Raiders didn't panic and go to the Helter Skelter passing game. They've gone to Bo instead. I would have panicked and put it in the air. But meantime, I didn't have a running game like this, and I didn't see this kind of running game by the Raiders earlier on either in the first and second quarter. They have found the soft spot in that field defense, and possibly it's because Still and Conner are out of the game. That's right. Great defenders against the run. Walt Corey said Art Still was the best defensive end against the run he'd ever seen. Here's Schroeder on a bootleg. Trying to get a block on the corner. Tim Brown tight is mowing up for a while, and Schroeder is out of bounds inside the 10. Oh, does that take some nerve to take a bootleg around Bruce Smiths and without a lead blocker. Oh my goodness. Schroeder did a good job that time. Bo Jackson, of course, who's been doing the bulk of the work, carrying the ball. This time we'll make a little fake and let's see what Bo does. Is he going to get back into the action? Bo, I don't care whether you have the ball or not. Bo, you're going to get hit. You're a running back. Schroeder is the fourth leading rusher on this team. Second and five after a five-yard game. Bo Jackson didn't get anything that time. He got the handoff, and Scott Radisic was all over him. Bo Jackson, how about my rubber feet? There's Radisic. Fred Smirlis now is injured, so they've already lost a third of that excellent defensive line when Art still sprained his knee. Now Smirlis is shaken up. Well, the Raiders are still alive, though they trail 27-7. Dodge salutes those who strive for victory with this edition of The Winners. Smirlis a little shaken up, but he did walk off the field under his own power and is replaced in the lineup by Jeff Wright, a rookie out of central Missouri, 6'2", 270 pounds on eighth round draft choice. Third and four coming up for the Raiders with the ball at the seven-yard line of the bill. Schrader passes to Brown, the ball loose and out of bounds. There's a flag down. Wow, did Brown take a hit. Who was that? Was it Burrows? Derrick Burrows is the one that blasted Tim Brown. The ball came flying through the air. Well, there was a flag on the plate too, so we don't know what that's about yet. I'm surprised that, you know, there was a question whether this pass was complete or incomplete, whether the ball went out of the end zone. Let's see if he does make the catch here or if it's going to be ruled incomplete. The ruling on the play is incomplete pass. We had offside defense. We had illegal motion, two men moving, offense. The offside defense, third down again with the line of scrimmage. Need a calculator to figure all that out. Yeah, it doesn't make any difference whether he had the ball or didn't have the ball. The offsetting penalties have canceled the play either way. Once again though, a golden opportunity for the Raiders, and they had a penalty to match Buffalo's penalty, and this could have given the Raiders a first down or better shot at scoring. Now it's still third down once again. They've been their own worst enemy today. Third and four again from the Buffalo Seven. Tenth play of the Raider drive, which has been mostly on the ground with both backs. Marcus Allen to the five yard line. He did not make the first down. Leonard Smith and Leon Seals were ready for the running play to Allen, and it'll bring up a fourth down, and the Raiders have got to go for it trailing 27 to 7. Yeah, they've got to try and get the seven points on. Three points aren't, well that's not going to help them very much. They are going to go for the first down as Bo Jackson's coming back onto the field. Well, he's going off and Steve Smith's coming onto the field to play that to him, Joe. I don't know, you know, it seems like I'd have my best runner. I guess they have to figure to Smith the better blocker in this way with the two good blockers in the backfield, Allen, Marcus Allen, and Smith. The defense doesn't know for sure who's going to get the ball. Two seconds on the play clock, they get it off. Schrader being chased, passes it complete to Smith, and then he, no it's incomplete. He lost the ball, he fumbled the ball, he didn't have it long enough, and the Raiders fail on their fourth down attempt. Shanahan was trying to call for a timeout as he saw the play clock ticking down, but they got it away. Schrader got the pass off, but it was fumbled and went incomplete, and the ball will go over to the Buffalo Bills when we return to Rich Stadium. Mike Shanahan was desperately trying to call a timeout before that play got underway. And then he watched as the pass went incomplete. First year coach of the Raiders, who's been undergoing some second guessing. Some of it on the part of the owner, Al Davis. Jamie Mueller carries for the Buffalo Bills as they take over. After the fourth down attempt failed. Mueller gets a couple of yards to about the eight yard line. Scott Davis and Van McElroy get credit for the Oakland or the Los Angeles Raiders. If I was going to go a whole game without saying that. Or whole season even. Well, we know it's the Raiders anyway. They're just not playing like the Raiders we remember. They didn't used to make those kind of mistakes. Dropping passes for first downs. Dropping a pass for a touchdown. They've hurt themselves today. You know what was going through my mind too? Some of the great games these two teams have had back in the old AFL days. Jamie Mueller. Mueller rambles across the 15 yard line. Close to a first down. Before Bill Piquel chases him down. 24 to 6. I'm not surprised that the Oilers are beating the Bengals. But the margin does surprise me a bit. How about that Green Bay over Minnesota margin? Now that one surprises me. That's a real shocker. Last week it was Tampa Bay over the Bills. New England's handling Tampa Bay. But only by seven today. 27-7 here at Rich Stadium. With five minutes and ten seconds left in the third quarter. Willow did pick up the first down in the Bills. Keep the drive there. Carolyn Thomas. Flag's fly. Greg Townsend, 93, was hit in the back of the head with that flag that was flying, Tom. Holding call against the Bills. He turned around right up. Popped somebody. Yes he did. Well the Raiders aren't out of this thing yet now. We still have five minutes left. The Bills have been hurting a bit defensively because of the injuries to still Ben Collin. Number 88. Offense. At the distance. Still first down. Metzlar has called for holding for the Bills. If the Raiders can stop the Bills right now, they'll get some good field position. And once again, I can't help but thank you. Watch this flag. Now watch it hit number 93 in the back of the head. There you see 93 getting a chokehold put on him. That's Townsend. Watch the flag. Boop. Right there. He should have hit Metzlar's with it. Number 88. He's a guy that did it. First and 19. Bueller. Not much. Bill Piquel, the veteran nose tackle of the Raiders, was ready for that. So the Los Angeles defense here with a big series can turn the ball back over to their offense in good field position. They need a quick score to get back in at trailing 27-7. Kelly should just take his time now. He's got 414. Keep running the ball right now. You certainly don't want to have a turnover to give the Raiders a chance at the quick store. I could see Buffalo using all the talk on the ground right now, keeping the ball. The Raiders have played turnover free football today. Thomas to the 12. Lyndon King on the stop. Harmon and Riddick now coming at the running backs, replacing Thurman Thomas and Jamie Mueller. With a third and 15 coming up. And the Raiders respond with their nickel defense. I'd be surprised really to see the Bills put it up in the air with third and 15, the way the defense has been playing with this lead. I can see them running a draw play, maybe a middle screen, but I can't see Kelly throwing the ball downfield. He doesn't have anybody to hand it off to back there. I know. He's going to throw it downfield someplace. And it's complete. Flip Johnson makes the catch with Mike Haynes immediately making the tackle, and it will be short of the first down. Sure, big deal. They made the completion. Nice catch, Flip, but meantime you didn't get enough for the first down. I mean, here Mike Haynes is on him and runs a pretty good pattern, but Flip Johnson is supposed to know how deep he has to go to get the first down, and he didn't get deep enough for it. What would you say to a receiver when he did that to you? I wouldn't. I couldn't say it right now. I'd probably be so upset. I started to say I wouldn't talk to him for a while. But I would definitely point out to him in case he didn't know it, that he didn't make the first down. That's basic. Kidd to punt, and Tim Brown to try to field it. Remember, he fumbled the last one, which led to a bill touchdown. Fields this one on a fair catch at the 45-yard line. So the Raiders do indeed have pretty good field position as John Kidd trots off after a 29-yard punt. Pretty good field position, Tom. But they need to start putting the ball in the air. I know I mentioned the last time, and the Raiders had a nice rushing attack going, but all they did was use up a lot of the clock, and they didn't get any points on the board. I mean, if they run it on the ground now, the Bills won't allow the big gainer on the ground. The Raiders are going to use up too much time on the clock to get back in it. 221 left in the third quarter. Buffalo leading 27-7. Play-action pass, Bruce Smith chasing Schrader, and then the pass knocked away on a good defensive effort as well by Scott Radicek. Good defense all the way around. Smith bearing down on Schrader to pressure the pass, and Radicek to knock it away. Well, you caught it. That's what broke it up. Schrader would like to stay at home and throw this ball, but Smith comes from behind him and starts to force him wide, and it's a good thing the ball wasn't intercepted. Radicek's in good shape and dives out in front and nearly picks it off. There's Bruce Smith hiding behind the pack. It's hard for him to hide, you know? He's a big man. Trying to get a little shield from the wind is all he's doing. Super Bowl most viable player, Pro Bowl most viable player a year ago. Made the Pro Bowl and went on to be MVP. Schrader again under pressure. This time from Talley, and he completes it to Tim Brown. Brown wrestled down. I believe he has enough for the first down as he is to about the 43-yard line of the Bills. Nate Odum's wrestled him to the turf. It covered 11 yards. Coming left to right, you see right underneath there is Tim Brown. He just got in a foot race, going cross-field with Odum's and outran him. I'm still surprised. I haven't seen one pass thrown in Lofton's direction today. And my goodness, folks, you're football fans. No James Lofton is one fine receiver. And not to get any work at all, that just shocks me. Seven times to the Pro Bowl. He's caught only 25 balls all year, no touchdowns. Schrader does go deep for Brown. He draws double coverage, somehow makes the catch and scores. Schrader gets a pat from his coach, and Tim Brown split the defenders. Took it in for a 43-yard touchdown catch. See, that's the thing I'm talking about. You give these big play people enough opportunities, they're going to make the great catch for you. Here Tim Brown is over there, and he gets double coverage while Kelso gets over there late. But watch this catch. Beautiful catch there, and he steps right around him and gets in the end zone. The more chances Tim Brown, James Lofton get at making those kind of plays, the more big plays they'll make. Tim Brown scoring his fifth touchdown of his rookie season. And Barr's point after is good. And the Raiders strike quickly on a 43-yard Schrader to Tim Brown pass. Makes the count now, 27-14. Well, Brown in the running for Rookie of the Year. Certainly a strong candidate. John Stevens, the New England running back, and Icky Woods also contenders. Here you see the talent of this Heisman winner. Yeah, he's getting pretty good coverage from Wayne Davis. I mean Davis is right with him, but Schrader throws the perfect pass to the outside, and Brown's able to catch it. Better give Jay Schrader and his offensive line a lot of credit on that play, too. First pointer had time to throw the ball, and then he put the perfect pass out there for Brown to make the catch. So the Raiders with a little new life and a minute 25 left. Let's check the other scores now on our 10-minute ticker. 27-6, the Oilers over the Bengals. The Bengals only scoring six points. That's a story in itself. Yeah, and look, Wayne Fonce, Detroit Lions, they're doing a job for Coach Fonce. Now, I know he's the interim coach, but there's been talk up there about his being the regular coach next season, and I can understand why. Kansas City is giving the Giants all they want to handle. McLeod refielding goals, keeping the Chiefs within striking distance. Dallas and Washington all tied up. Really low-scoring game at Foxborough today. New England clinging to a 7-0 lead. They're already in the fourth quarter. Must be a lot of running going on. Bars kickoff. Taken by Johnson. Straight up the middle behind the wedge. Johnson. Across the 35 to the 37 before he's tackled by Steve Strahan. So what about the play calling now for the Bills? Will they try to grind it out and use the clock here, or will that be too conservative an approach? See, now it would be too conservative. They've given them the quick score. The Bills have to go back to work with what got them there, the 27 points on the board. They need to run the play-action passes, get good gainers on the first down. Kelly can't be conservative now because the big play is, boy, it's there any time from the Raiders. Riddick and Mueller are the running backs. Mueller. Good hole for Mueller. Pounds up the middle to the 45. Van McElroy, the free safety. Stopping Jamie Mueller. 6'1", 225 pounds. Just a good hole in there by this Buffalo Bill offensive line. You'll watch big Jamie Mueller hit through there. Not a hand is laid on him as he gets cuts back against that crack. Matt Millen, number 55, the linebacker, float out of the way. And Van McElroy, Van McElroy was forced to make the tackle all alone. Mueller again. Not much there. Nobody much knew Mueller out of Benedictine College, but he caught the Pro Scouts' attention when he ran a 4'4", 6'40", and bench pressed 450 pounds. And he's 6'1", 225, so that's pretty darn fast. Scott Davis, the rookie out of Illinois, got the tackle for the Raiders. As we come to the end of the third quarter of play, we won't have another play run before the clock will tick down. And there's the gun. So at the end of the third quarter, the score, the Los Angeles Raiders 14, the Buffalo Bills 27. Tonight, Secret agents Dan Hackroyd and Jimmy Chase face certain death. Over 77,000 braving the elements to come to the game today, and they just gave themselves a hand. They have just set a new NFL record for in-stadium attendance, 622,793 for the season, breaking the old mark of 601,000 held by the Detroit Lions. Kelly to pass on first down. Short hopped, and hit got to Trumaine Johnson on one hop, and Kelly paid for it. Big Rod Martin, number 53, the linebacker for the Raiders, got back in there in Kelly's chest. Only wimps watch the game on TV. Now that's not true. I know that for a fact that that is not true. My brothers are at home watching, and not one of those fellows are wimps. I have some buddies out in LA, and they're big and strong, so not only wimps watch on television. I thought there would be a lot of empty seats today. It was so cold, the weather was so bad, I thought maybe 55, 60,000 would show up. 77,000 to break the record. Mueller. Good hole for Vance Mueller, and Jamie Mueller who's finally tripped up by Ron fellows, or he was going to go a long way. As it is, he picks up a Buffalo first down. Jamie Mueller's having a big day, that one for 15 yards, and another Buffalo first down. Can't help but wonder where these defenders are for the Raiders. There you see a huge hole open up there. Kent Hall, number 67, was able to slow Matt Millen down, and it was just a tremendous hole. Fine blocking job by the Bills. Three-quarter stats. The Bills leading slightly in total yardage. They have more rushing yards, but the Raiders more passing in. On the scoreboard is 27-14. Mueller, again, gets the handoff. Not much that time. Millen and Robinson pounce on him. We haven't seen Thurman Thomas for a while, and he limped off earlier in the third quarter. I don't know if he might have been shaken up a little bit, because he hasn't been back in there. You know, I'd have to believe that the Raiders are going to have to do something defensively, come up with a big play, get eight or nine people up on the line, because they can't afford to let Scott Norwood get in field goal position. Another three points would force the Raiders, it would put them in bad shape. Thomas on the bench, he gained over 100 yards. Early in the third quarter, he had that total over 100. Chris Burkett. Kelly drills it to Burkett, who makes the catch to the Raider. 20. Buffalo has another first down. That one for 17 yards. Mike Haynes tackled Burkett, but too late. He already had the first down. Burkett gets good position on Mike Haynes, and Burkett goes six foot four, Tom, so you can't push him around very much on the outside. Burkett has good speed, but being six-four, he's a strong guy, and he's not going to get held up at the line of scrimmage. That time he just got inside of Mike Haynes and beat him to the ball. Good pass by Kelly. But Roll replaces Pete Metzlar as a tight end for the girls. Nine and 22 on the day for Kelly, 113 yards. Riddick on the handoff, thrown back for the Raider defense. Right now the Bills are content to keep it on the ground to queue up their clock now. I wouldn't think they'd pick the ball in the air again. I'm guessing in a lot of plays, Tom, obviously. But, you know, the game changes sometimes from play to play. Right now the field position that the Bills have, they're interested in that field goal more than a touchdown right now, and they're interested in keeping that clock rolling. Marv Levy with a headset on. Next to us up here in the press box area, the assistant coaches of the Bills who are calling the plays are trying to defrost their window. They need an ice scraper. Pass complete inside the 10. Trumaine Johnson with another clutch reception. And the Buffalo Bills once again knocking on the door of the goal after a 12-yard pass completion. They have a little surprise, but I guess if you have confidence in... Who called this Bills offense conservative in the first place? I mean, here he is throwing the ball again, and Trumaine Johnson's wide open. I guess that probably could have fooled the Raiders, too. I would think that they would have been running the ball and keeping it on the ground. Update from the Astrodome. Mike Rozier with another touchdown run. It's 34-6. The Euler is leading the Bench. Rob Riddick powers his way inside the 5-yard line. There's a penalty marker on the play as Matt Millen was down at the bottom of the stack for the Raiders. But we've talked about the Raiders having the opportunity to win the Western Division, depending on what happens in their last game or what happens with Denver and Seattle today. Tell you what, they're not playing like any champion that I've seen around in a long time. I mean, they may somehow find a way to win that division, but... 5-yard face mask foul. In this case, half the distance from the goal line to the goal line in the 4-2, 26th defense, and still the first shot. There you see the hand to the face mask. He said 3-6, but he meant 2-6 Van McElroy. Now you're talking about the Raiders not looking like a Divisional Championship team. That might be a commentary on the strength of the AFC West itself. Yeah, I mean, the best record going into this week is shared by the Raiders and the Seahawks. They're here in Denver with 7-7, 500 balls. Play-action pass. Kelly drills it complete for the touchdown. The books roll, who makes only his second reception of the season. He goes for a score. Good shot by Kelly. Smart play-action fake that allowed Butcherow to get in that secondary and get open. Van McElroy, the safety in the center of the screen, right center of the field. In the center of the screen, right center just bites on that fake a little bit. Now he can't get over there fast enough. Watch McElroy. He just can't quite get there enough because he bit on that play fake in the middle. So Butcherow, who is primarily a blocker, shows us his spike form after his only second catch of the year. Norwood for the extra point. And it's good, so Buffalo responds to the Raiders' score with one of their own. And they stay in command of the game. They've got 10.56 left. The score now 34-14, Bills. The drive is on. Tom Hammond and Joe Namath at Ritz Stadium where Butch Roll has just made a touchdown catch. Joe, how's this for production? He has four catches in the last two seasons, all four for touchdowns. Might use that man a little bit more often in the passing game. Butch Roll is out of Michigan State in his third year. Norwood with a kick. And Tim Brown. No, it's going to be taken instead by one of the up men. It's by Adams. Adams is stacked up at about the 27-yard line. Mark Pike, first downfield for the Bills. And Butch Roll, a little, uh, gimp-y. Might be playing to the crowd a little bit, you think, after that touchdown catch? Well, he might. Let's see what happens to him here and maybe we can tell a little bit more. Right now he seems to be alright. Gosh, Tom, I think he might have been playing to the crowd a little bit. Doesn't look hurt to me. Yeah, he got a good camera shot. Now he'll get on TV again. Here's Schrader. Schrader's pass deflected incomplete. Leon Seals has come in to replace Art Still, and Still was injured. And Seals deflects the pass. Fault start before the snap. Number 60 offense. Five yards. Still first down. Here's Leon Seals. In a moment we'll see him. He's number 96. For a Graves number 60 was called for the penalty that time. Leon Seals, of course, is known as Dr. Sacks. Got it on his license plate. There's Seals. That is hand muffed behind him. I don't know if he's doing much good back there. He said it would be handcuffed to get your arms in. He's so good. He plays with his hands behind his back from time to time. Oh, Jackson spun down for a loss in the play by Bruce Smith. Or was it Marcus Allen? It was a bad call, whatever it was, on the offense behalf. I mean, it's time to get some points on the board. You've got to start throwing that rock up in the air sometime. Bruce Smith, he made a big play earlier in the game. Watch on the right side of your screen. Now you see him come in and, well, he just makes a good play. Dom Mosbar, who was an all-pro center for the Raiders, moved to tackle to help out that line. Just couldn't handle Smith in that last play. Bruce Smith, who was the first player taken in the 85 draft, living up to his expectations. Screen pass to Allen. Allen lets his interference form and then picks his way forward to the 35-yard line. He's going to be short of the first down. Mark Kelso got in the middle of those blockers to bring Allen down. Still 14-yard gain on the play. And will bring up third and about four. Marcus Allen was lifting a little bit. Well, you know, it's so cold out there. Your toes, your feet, your joints all tighten up a little bit. You bump those rascals. Man, they scream at you. I mean, it hurts. Nine minutes, 15 seconds left in the game. Buffalo leading 34-14. Draw play. Marcus Allen will not get the first down. Darrell Tallek smelled the draw and stopped Allen short of the sticks. Will the Raiders go for it or will they punt? Well, I don't know why they'd want to punt in this situation. Here you can see the draw play just doesn't get anywhere. Number 96, Leon Seals is the first one to get. Marcus around the feet and then of course the tackle's made by Tallek, number 56. But they've got to go for the first down here now. The Bills are waiting for him. If they don't make it here, I guess the party is over for the Raiders. Fourth and two. Nice pass by Schroeder. It's complete to Lofton and Lofton off to the races. He's at the 20. Cuts back and will be taken down at about the seven-yard line. Odum's and Kelso cut Lofton when he cut back. But a long gainer to James Lofton. You've been mentioning his name all day. 30 yards on the game. Now they go to Lofton, sure. I mean, they're going to have to do it about 12 more times this game too to get back in it. This play hasn't worked for them the first couple of times they tried it early on, but here's Lofton making the catch and then he just puts on some speed to get back across the field and turn it into the big gainer. Well, you know Lofton wants to get that ball in his hands. He's been such a premier receiver in the NFL. It's frustrating for him not to even average two catches a game. Gee. Raiders with a first down at the six-yard line of Buffalo. Trader passes complete to Steve Smith for the score. Well, he got into a touchdown trading battle here. The Raiders score, the Bills answer. The Raiders come back and score again. This time on the arm of Jay Schrader who hits Steve Smith for this touchdown. I don't think anyone expected this many points to be scored today with the weather conditions and all and a good defensive team at Buffalo. But right now Steve Smith just cuts across that middle and there wasn't a bill within five yards of him. Set up the block now on the extra point try which is good by Barr. Nice catch by Steve Smith too. The ball laid out in front of him and the second-year veteran out of Penn State made the grab for the score. Penalty marker down in the end zone on the extra point attempt. Nick Jorgensen's got his flaps down on his hat. Twelve men on the field. Defense. The point is good. Five-yard penalty on the kickoff. So we'll take a break. Seven-fifteen left in the game. It's now 34-21. From now on this is what dry is. Dry is a beer that starts bold from the first taste, finishes clean with no aftertaste and refreshes completely. Dry is a beer called Michelob Dry. One taste and you'll drink it dry. The drive is on. Mazda's year-end sales drive. It's been a big year for Mazda trucks. They were rated number one in customer satisfaction for the third straight year. Now your Mazda dealer wants to satisfy still more customers with special incentives that can save you hundreds on any Mazda truck. Get to your Mazda dealer's year-end sales drive. And drive one home today. The year-end sales drive ends soon. See your local Mazda dealer now. Life's full of simple pleasures. Like the comfort of Levi's jeans. Or has it forgotten? It was a time when the world was falling apart. And a time when families pulled together. Hal Holbrook, Eva Marie Saint and family ties Courtney Cox. And I'll be home for Christmas Monday. Smith scored the touchdown to pull the Raiders within 13 of the Buffalo Bills and 7-15 remaining. And there you saw the quick strike capability that you've been mentioning is lost with the big gainer to set up the touchdown. I know. And you know, the Bills haven't turned the ball over yet today. You kind of think that they're due for a fumble, a mistake or an interception. And if that happens, hey, these Raiders are right back in it. So the Raiders trying to make it into the playoffs by winning their division. Still hanging in there. They're down by 13 now. But we've seen how quickly they can strike. And so it's up to Buffalo now to try to control the ball a little bit and keep it away from that quick strike Raider offense. And that touchdown's got to fire up the Raider defense, too. They should be putting some pressure on that line of scrimmage and forcing Kelly to continue to throw the ball. You want to cause a turnover somehow, a fumble or an interception. And once again, with the big play capabilities of these special Raider people, the wide receivers, the running backs and the strong arm of Schrader, Coach Shanahan can have these guys right back in the game here. 41 to 6, the Oilers over the Bengals. And that Chicago score, Kevin Butler kicked a field goal 32 yards with four seconds left to win it for the Bears who continue to struggle a bit with all their injuries. Have to call that a moral victory for the Detroit Lions, huh? I bet it was heartbreaking, though, to lose one with four seconds left after playing one of the best teams in the league to a virtual standstill. Tampa Bay, New England goes into overtime. Here's the offside kick attempt expected by the Bills. And they don't get it. Ted Flip Johnson takes it at the 15-yard line. Using his blockers, he dives forward to about the 37-yard line. Buffalo called a timeout there. I don't really know why. Do you, Joe? I have no idea why. There was a timeout already with the kickoff and the commercial. I can't figure out why Buffalo called a timeout if, in fact, they did. They did. They have two left. And Mike Shanahan and his Raiders with a full complement of three. The score, though, in favor of the Bills, 34-21 and 7-09 left. The Raiders need to get the ball back in the herd. Mueller tripped up. Stopped at about the 38 by Lyndon King. Thurman Thomas still has not come back after limping off in the third quarter. And gaining 103 yards on the day. Two touchdowns by the Raiders would give them a 35-34 edge. I know that's asking a lot. Could be far-fetched. But we've seen the big plays both by Brown and Lofton. You know the Raiders are capable of exploding any time. This bill offense is a bit flawless. They haven't dropped the ball and put it on the ground here with the intersection of fumbles. And I know the Raiders would like to create one. Mueller. Kelly fell down. He's made the handoff to Jamie Mueller. Yeah, but that doesn't count. He's allowed to fall down once he gets rid of the ball. It wasn't very pretty, though. Mueller wasn't able to gain much either. They stacked him up. They met him right at the line of scrimmage. And he's just across the 40. Bringing up a third down and about six. Interesting situation right now. Should the Bills go ahead and put the ball up? Or should they keep it on the ground? I'm one of those conservative quarterbacks. And I'm afraid I'd have to keep it on the ground here to keep milking that clock. Well, they don't want to turn over because turnovers have been the story of the game. Three of them by the Raiders. The Bills have turned them into points. Direct snap to Ronnie Harmon. Harmon still on his feet. Taken down inside the 30-yard line of the Raiders by Mike Hayes. They snap the ball directly to Ronnie Harmon, and he sets sail upfield. Interesting play. Good play for the Bills. Kent Hull, the center, has asked to snap the ball a little bit to his left that time. And he makes an accurate snap. And then Harmon does the rest with a huge hole. What a stiff arm that time he put on Van McElroy. 31-yard gain for Ronnie Harmon, the former number one draft choice out of Iowa. In his third season with the Bills, he gives Buffalo a first down at the Raider 27-yard line. Now back to work with Mueller. Stacy Turan comes up to pop Mueller and send him down. Short game. Well, I really would be surprised to see the Bills put the ball in the air now. They're on the 25-yard line. They're working that clock nicely. A field goal would put this game out of reason. It would force the Raiders to have to score three times. And I don't think the Raiders have enough time left in the clock to do that if the Bills continue to keep it on the ground for the next two plays. Norwood staying ready. Second and seven for Buffalo. Cincinnati is losing. The Bills are winning. A whole field advantage could be theirs throughout all the playoffs. They were ready for Jamie Mueller that time. Scott Davis arrives simultaneously with the football. Hey, that was a big play, too. That right there could have taken him out of field goal range. He had a loss that time. That's the one thing the Bills did not want to do, is take a loss. And with the loss, it could be tough for Norwood to get it that far. A good, good play coming in there by Defensive and Scott Davis. But they really like this Davis. Talking with Al Davis yesterday, the managing general partner of the Raiders, and he's talking about this rookie Davis just playing the best ball he's had, but he's been playing quite some time. They're really high on him. And a good game today. Sets up a third and twelve for Buffalo. Hand it off to Riddick. Blockers in front. Riddick to the fifteen and inside to the fourteen yard line. Eddie Anderson tied him up, but Riddick with a big run, moves the sticks again as Buffalo picks up a first down. Fifteen yards. Good, good offensive blocking there. Number seventy-one down, Hellas three and number fifty-one. Richard get out there to lead the opening. And it's just pretty good running by Riddick. I'm afraid right now the Raiders are going to have to hope that Denver comes out on top at Seattle and they can handle Seattle next week. That appears to be the Raiders' only hope right now. They have to hope that they get help from someone else. The Raiders had the chance to do it themselves with two wins, but now they've got to rely on some other people. From the thirteen yard line of Buffalo's north end as we approach the two minute warning. Mueller, maybe a yard. Matt Millen right to tie up his feet. Let me see now, Tom, if the Seahawks beat Denver, the Seahawks will go to eight and seven, and the Raiders are going to seven and eight if they lose today. Now if the Raiders beat the Seahawks next week at home, will that give the Raiders the division title? Glad you asked that, Joe. We're looking at the standings here. I think so because the Raiders have lost only once in their division. And they would have split with the Seahawks because Seattle won the earlier game at Seattle. Meanwhile, we'll give you some other scores. We've got to change the subject here. Forty-one to six, the Oilers. We already gave you that Chicago final, Green Bay upsetting Minnesota. That's a real surprise of the day. As we change, we'll see a final that's in from overtime at Foxborough with New England still in the playoff picture as a wild card. Just lasting over Tampa Bay with a field goal in overtime to win it ten-seven. Thirty-one, twenty, a thirty-four, twenty-one here at Ritz Stadium. The Raiders have called a timeout, stopping the clock at 2.04. So one more play before the two-minute warning. We've got names from all the hit squad, the defense, Kelly's heroes, the offense, and the Steve Tasker-led special teams, the Tasker Force. Tasker Force. Tasker has been injured for a couple of games. Very valuable, in fact, the special teams player of the year last year. Riddick gets the handoff, moves strongly up the middle. Scott Davis with another tackle for the Raiders, but he's close to the five-yard line as we come to the two-minute warning with Buffalo in control. AT&T, the right choice. Buffalo leading in the game and back on track apparently after losing two in a row. They will go to 12 and three. And with Cincinnati on the way to a loss to Houston, we'll have the home field advantage for the entire playoffs if they can win at Indianapolis next week. Well, they hands it to Rob Riddick. Riddick is inside the five and the Raiders immediately call their second timeout to stop the clock. One fifty-four left. And we'll take a break as well. But they'll be rooting for the Seahawks tonight at Seattle host Denver. Then the Raiders would have to beat Seattle next week because of that six and one divisional record. Shanahan signaling in. He hadn't given up. Just a minute 10 left. The Raider first down. You know with the score 37-21 as a quarterback. What am I doing out here now? We're going to get some more points. Another touchdown. They've got another game left against the Seattle Seahawks. The Raiders just called time out to stop the clock of 57 seconds. I can't figure this out. Right now they're just taking the risk of losing one or two of their ball players. They're going to put Shrader back there in the pocket with Bruce Smith and Cornelius Bennett coming after him. I think the Raiders ought to just run the clock out now. Let's check the report card for the Raiders today. Shrader was 11 for 21. Couple of touchdown passes and over 200 yards. Did a pretty decent job. I thought he did. Now those statistics aren't telling the whole story. Shrader had some dropped balls. The fumble that he had with Bruce Smith was a good play by Smith. On the draw play with Shrader dropped the ball. That was an awful play by Shrader. But overall I think Shrader's done a pretty good job today. He's not getting any help from his teammates. They're not a great deal. Sure Lofton made a big play and so did Tim Brown. But they had no consistent offense at all today. What about Jim Kelly? How do you assess his performance? Oh, Kelly had a good day. He didn't put the ball in the wrong place. He was going to the right receivers. But I tell you what, there are a lot of quarterbacks around the league that could have operated this offense today. I mean that line just did a terrific job of blocking for Kelly. Sure he was accurate with some of his passing, but he got a lot of help from the rest of his pals today. And the rookie Thomas with a 100 yard rushing game and less than three quarters of action. That's the kind of football the coach Levy likes to see, that ground game and defense. Shrader. Smith wrapped him up. But he managed to get away. And he completed it to Steve Smith. Smith was then hit by Cornelius Bennett. I mean who they fooling? What are the Raiders doing right now? Go ahead and run the clock out. They're just taking chances on losing some people that they might need next week against Seattle. The highway has been slowed down considerably and the ominous clouds continue to hang around Revere and the Pacific Palisade. Maintenance people have made a gallant effort to get the course back in shape and hopefully we will be able to finish the final round of this the 62nd Los Angeles Open. During the rain delays players took some refuge in unusual places. And who else would come out of a locker other than Pat McElbrady. What kind of that Pat Summerall with Ken Venturi our CBS Golf analyst. Ken what kind of a physical and mental effect does a rain delay like this have on the golfers. Well everybody's been confused today Pat because they've been on and off been on and off. I think it's to Beck's advantage. Beck has not won before which has been a big subject. The one thing I think about it which I think about is I'm glad they did not call the round off. They would have given him the championship but it would have been a hollow victory. I think it's his tournament to win today and if he just keeps cool just keeps us calm. He's he leads three players you got Elkington Fiore and Haas which he leads by three. I think if he can stay around 71 the tournament says well let's take a look at that leaderboard then as you said ship Beck leads by three strokes at 14 under over Jay Haas Steve Elkington and Ed Fiore and then Tom Pertzer and Mack O'Grady out of the locker and safely playing. Mike Reed now has moved to minus 10 Bill Sander Hal Sutton and Ben Crenshaw and Mike Holbert. Because of today's extensive rain delays the Los Angeles Open will not conclude until several hours after the scheduled ending of our broadcast. As a result we will be unable to continue our coverage past six o'clock Eastern Standard Time and three Pacific. But we will have the final results tonight on CBS Sportsbreak. What about your back and what about the fact that he's finished second seven times down and has never won. What kind of a mental burden does he carry. I think the burden is coming from other people than himself. I think finishing second seven times is not all bad. It's pretty good for the wallet. But I think that everyone says he's playing well and he needs the victory but he's playing strong he's hitting the ball well and I think what he has to do is forget the leaderboard just make a plan and what he has to play is a round par and I don't believe I don't see anybody today making a hot run on. Well as we said earlier weather has been the story principally the rain temperature 63 degrees humidity 80 percent the wind southeast 10 to 15 miles an hour forecast is for continued showers. So far they've been right. Let's go meet the announcers who will be covering the action in today's final round. The tee shot is played with a mid iron to a huge two tiered green. Today's spin is in the back left corner. I'm Jim Nance and I'll be at 15. It's a dogleg right par four Eucalyptus trees line the fairway is played as one of the most difficult holes this week at Riviera. It's also the spot where last year Ben Crenshaw lost in a sudden death playoff to TC Chen. I'm Gary McCord I'll be on the 16th hole a short downhill par three. The problem here lies not in the small green but in the four steep lip bunkers that totally encircle this hole. I'm Ben Wright I'll be reporting the play from the 17th hole a 578 yards par five. Very few of the players go for the green in two shots preferring to lay back and hit a wedge to a two tiered green. And the famous 18th what about this par four Kenny. Four hundred and forty seven yards requires a left to right tee shot and a pin place to the back left today because the conditions this hole is going to play very long. Chip back the leader then at minus 14 as they just resume play a few moments ago. He leads by three over Hass Elkington and Ed Fiore. CBS Sports proudly presents the PGA Tour. A battle of the Big Ten's big guns as the seventh ranked Wolverines collide with the second ranked Boilermakers next Saturday on the home of the NCAA championship. I used to think that stage fright would be opening on Broadway in Hamlet with no rehearsals. No. That is a piece of cake. Stage fright is getting up at the AT&T on the first tee at Pebble Beach when you address the ball and suddenly 3,500 people stop. And there's total silence that is shattering. I would rather open in Hamlet with no rehearsals. Chip Beck, the leader. This is final round action. Again, a reminder that because of two extensive rain delays, we won't be able to stay on until the conclusion of today's final round. Hopefully, they will be able to finish. And let's go out right now and pick up what's going on at the tenth hole. Tenth hole is a very short hole. It's a layup hole. It's 311 yards. And that's perfect position here because the green is set at an angle and the pin today is in far back. Jody Mudd, David Peoples, and Nick Price in this group. 311 yards it is, a par four. That was Jody Mudd. You can drive this green on getting the right conditions, but you're still a long way from the hole and there's a bunker short of the green and a bunker in the back, you see, and a very narrow green. And when it's hard, this green used to be almost impossible to hold the ball on. The guy that just hit that shot is one who ought to make a move today, Jody Mudd. Oh, I like that. That's good. Nick Price will be next to hit. Nick Price will be next to hit. With just a pitching wedge, no more than maybe 80, 90 yards, watch the action on this. The greens have been soft throughout the tournament. Today, obviously, because of all the moisture and the humidity, they'll be softer than ever. Well, that's why the scoring is so low, Pez, because the greens are soft, the fairways are fast, there's very little wind, and the rough is just void of rough. David Peoples. He has to come right over the top of the bunker. Good angle. Watch this. Pull up. Good shot. Pull today is 75 feet back in front and that's 12 feet from the back edge, so that's a good shot. Cut was even par, and here are some of the people, some big names, who didn't make it, Erwin Stadler, Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Larry Mize, Steve Pate, who's been on a roll. It's hard for me to believe that at Riviera Country Club, the cut was even par, 142, par being 71, 35, 36. That, unless you've played here, you don't realize how good these fellas can play. You look back at what Chip Beck accomplished with his three-round total of 199, which broke Lanny Watkins' record. That was a record that I think almost no one thought would ever be set to begin with or broken. Well, the one he broke, I don't believe in that so much, but the one that I think is hard to believe is that Lanny then went out and shot 64, so the course record is 264, and to think when Hogan shot 276, I thought that was the most phenomenal golf they've ever seen. However, there have been some changes made, and Riviera still has that historic reputation, still is held in such high esteem by almost everyone who plays here, but there have been some changes made. That's right. They've changed the holes in 7, 8, a little bit at 6, 12, 13. Here's a shot right here where you will not see the ball lay down anymore. The ball just sits up, makes the pitching and chipping around the green much easier. It's a...there's where the scores have changed, is that the ball... when you see the players today, you'll see the ball in the rough. You will very rarely not be able to see the ball. And there were times when it just disappeared. There were times like at 18, you had to look straight down to see the ball. You couldn't find it. Nick Price aligning his goal with a birdie as the rain picks up again. There are certain holes, and this golf course has a very big variance of types of holes. The first hole is an easy par 5, which you try to birdie. The second is a 467-yard par 4, and you just love to make par there. They've got some short par 3s, they've got long ones. It's a combination of all shots. Look out. That ball breaks from right to left, and most...all the players from that position will miss the ball, the cup mostly to the left side. This again is number 10, 311-yard par 4. So far, this is the way it has played, as Ken Venturi said. Well, if you look at the distance yardage, 311 yards, it's possible, with the conditions ideal, that you could drive it on the green. There have been three eagles, 111 birdies. I played in a pro-amp here once, and my caddy gave me the driver by mistake, and I said, you know, I didn't want to bring him back, so I thought that I would just bunt the driver down easy. So I had to bunt it down, and I couldn't find my ball, and I kept yelling. I was on the green, and for years after, I would swing as hard as I can to reach the green. I never reached it again. There's a message. Yes, there was, but I have never been smart enough to remember it. This is for birdie. David Peoples. Yeah! And he goes to 5 under par. This is up at the sixth green, or back, I should say, back at the sixth green, and the maintenance staff trying to take care of things and get things in as good a shape as they possibly can. Chip Beck still leads at minus 14. He now has played two holes. Jay Haas is at minus 11, and Percher and Reed Elkington in no grader at 10. Dave, new phones come on Monday. Right. Computer Thursday, and I think we're ready for that bookkeeper. Oh, great. Does she load boxes? Uh, Dave, I got us the extra truck. My partner's Santa Claus. You can't always prepare for success, but you can count on Ryder to help you handle it with the right truck at the right time. What about a driver? David, you're doing a great job. Ryder. We're there at every turn. zulzie Only at Radio Shack, the technology store. Where is Charlie? So how's your new lawnmower? Great. I've wanted a John Deere all my life. Got there first thing this morning? Found him that time. Where is he? I've had my John Deere rider for years. Never had a bit of trouble. Mine started this morning like the first day I got it and it's seven years old. So what's keeping Charlie? He doesn't have a John Deere, does he? Nothing runs like a Deere. Live from El Paso, the glamour, the entertainment, the suspense. Alan Thicke and Tracy Scoggins see who will be our next Miss USA. Live Tuesday at 9. Next Saturday, college basketball continues on CBS Sports. When Michigan will try to avenge a loss handed to them by the Purdue Boys, earlier this season, coverage starts at 4 Eastern Time Saturday on CBS Sports. Let's go to 14. We're at 14, the 175 yard par three. Corey Pavin struggling today. That's a three iron. Well, if it seemed like a lot of club, it was. He puts it through the back of the green. Pavin playing in a group, which includes the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am winner, Steve Jones and Bruce Litzke. This 14th hole has really played fairly easy this year, but as we have seen in past rounds and we'll see all day today, the greens are soft and players can play a pretty good iron shot at the flagstick. This 14th green must be a good one. This 14th green must be about 40 yards from one side to the other. It is just huge. It's almost a half wedge, if you will, from top part of the green there in the left hand side of your screen to where the flagstick is today on the far left hand corner is the golfers play this 175 yard par three to 13. 13 is a par four, 420 yards in length. And has been very difficult. It's a slight dogleg to the left. It requires a right to left tee shot. And if you can spin the ball, you can pick up a lot of yardies with the fairways being that fast. And the one thing you do here, you watch is you don't see it today because the hole today is on the right side of the green. There's there's boundary just to the left of the green. Billy Andrade for birdies 500, 200 today. Good putt. Billy's got the pants down inside the socks. Modified knickers. Chip Beck still at 14 under only one player. Jay Haas is 11 within three shots. Meantime back at 10. Davis Love, Jumbo Ozaki and Fred Couples in this group. Davis. Get in there. Oh, see the ball move the left all the time. Meantime back at 13. Cook. For birdie. Hit it. Hit it. Oh, that gets him back to three under and even for today's round. Back at 10. Fred Couples. Should have gone to school on Davis Love's part, knowing that the ball's going to move right to left. He's got the bottom part of it. He went to school. We think I would think what we didn't see the shots, but as long as Fred Couples and Davis Love can hit the ball, I would think if I was him, I'd take a whack at this game. Every time I came to it, I was very humid, very moist, obviously. Zaki now and he too. With a birdie effort. At 65, starting out the week. This is right down straight downhill. He should make this. Just get it on track. Let's go back to 14. And you can see the way Pavin's ball reacted. Just how soft these greens are. It actually makes the short game so much easier when you can pitch to the soft surfaces. We may see players from town that are going to be able to get a little bit of a better game. We may see players from time to time today take relief from casual water. Jim Nance may have a problem at 15 with that swale that runs through the green. Let's go back to 10. Davis Love. This is par. Watch out. Saw a break right to left and it broke left to right on the second one. And back to 14. Steve Jones. He was just off the putting surface. Now he would not get relief from any casual water on the green because he was off the surface itself. Had he been just on the putting surface, he would have been entitled to relief. Davis Love made his bogey at 10. The players have had. So you all have a very, very lovely weekend. Oh yeah, come on. Is your middle name? I'm a little bit of a Is your middle name brick? Yes, yes, yes, yes, Wendy. Yes, yes. OK. Well, we all know that AIDS is a very serious problem in this country. Machines that dispense condoms could soon become fixtures in the nation's hotels and motels. Channel 9's Les Kumagai says that is the dream of a Los Angeles businessman. We'll admit we didn't think the Edmarm Hotel was the place to find the newest concept in the vending machine business, but it's here. Just down from the ice snack and soft drink machines right next to the hot food. It's the comfort station, a machine like none you've ever seen before. It sells safe sex. And with every condom purchase, an owner's manual of sorts is included. The comfort station is a brainchild of Walter McQuire, an entrepreneur who sees himself as a businessman who is also protecting the public's health. Right. I do hope that this project makes a lot of money. I mean, everybody's interested in money, but I want to make money so that I can help other people and take care of needs that occur to live. Now, there are many who might consider this a very timely idea, but some of you, like us, might be wondering, do people really make use of this machine? After they pay, the second place they come is this machine. And I think it's a wonderful idea. People of today need things like that. So far, this is the first safe sex machine McQuire has installed. He hopes to someday dominate in the two million hotels and motels across the country. In Los Angeles, Les Kumagai, Channel 9 News. OK, coming up next, Scott St. James with a look at sports. For the Lakers game tonight it was announced that Michael Cooper will be out of action at least a week because of a severely sprained left ankle. Get well quickly Michael. The team needs you. But how about that game they played tonight? If you missed this one, shame on you. You missed the dandy. Hawks wasted no time. They controlled the tip, all-star guard, docked river's dishes to all world. Dominique Wilkins for one of his patented jams. Lakers trailed by as many as 18. But James Worthy with a career high of 38 helped them come back, send the game in a good way. Hawks threatened to blow the game wide open in the extra quarter. Spud Webb denies AC Green of the easy bucket. Then races all the way down court. 94 feet throughout his matador defense. But when the money's on the line, one guy rises to the occasion like no other. Magic Johnson, who would notch 19 assists, won here to Green. Then the clincher came from a three point distance. Can the Magic Man do it all or what? In addition to his 19 assists, 29 points, 11 rebounds, an inspiring victory. That was a heck of a ballgame. There is your final Lakers host, Detroit. Sunday, after sports reunion, the Clippers have been playing Utah. The Jazz boasts two of the NBA's finest young up and comers like all-star power forward, Carl the mailman Malone and crafty point guard, John Stockton. Going into tonight's play, Stockton and Magic were tied, leading the league in assists. Magic had 19 tonight, so Stockton is responding nicely. Malone averages 26 points a game, while Stockton is good for more than 11 assists tonight. Here they trade places, Malone to Stockton. Once upon a time, Gerald Griffith was great, but injuries have plagued his career. Could Dr. Duncanstein be on his way back? Want a Clipper highlight? Not many tonight, not many this year, but one bright note is Michael Cage, fine player, fine first. Cage recently started to donate $5 to charity. Breachers rebound, that's a lot, as he's second in the league in that department. Utah is leading that by four. In Dallas, a special look at the most overrated player in the NBA, Ralph Sampson. One of the most highly acclaimed players of all time when he's in college as a pro, he's been a big-time bust, and his coach, George Carl, is saying, who did we trade to get this guy? Why and how much does he make? Even the Dallas announcer's got all over Mr. Sampson. Of all of Sampson's shots, that may have been the most accurate. George Carl ought to protest something. Yep, and there is your final. Sampson had nine points tonight. Philadelphia beats New Jersey. Berkeley with 43. Jordan with 49 as Chicago wins. Milwaukee a winner. Washington by four over San Antonio. Boston and Portland are tied. The NHL, Philadelphia a winner. New Jersey a winner over the Rangers. Washington blanked Winnipeg. Edmonton is beating up Pittsburgh. Toronto is blanking Vancouver. Another no-medal day for Team USA in the Winter Olympics, a critical day for the hockey team. They needed to beat Norway or they would be eliminated, and they did win the game. Six to three. The Russians over West Germany. Czechoslovakia blanked Austria. In the women's downhill, the gold went to West Germany. The silver to Switzerland. The bronze to Canada. In the men's 15K cross-country, gold and bronze to the Russians over the 15K cross-country, while Norway bagged silver. And in the men's double-loose, East Germany won gold and silver, while West Germany took the bronze. Finally, the Lakers will host Detroit Sunday, and the Kings will host Toronto Saturday. I'm on my way to Ormond Beach, Florida, for the Oral Barons Ball, as soon as we get off here tonight. We'll take a taxi to go, right? That's right. We have this late story from Hamilton Township, New Jersey. Another plane crashed to report tonight, the third of the night. A twin-engine plane carrying six people crashed in dense fog and driving rain near the Atlantic City airport. So far, there's no word on injuries or fatalities. The Piper Navajo was en route from Norwood, Massachusetts to Pomona, and I assume that's Pomona, New Jersey, not California. And it crashed when its radar signal was lost. The hour-long search for wreckage was hampered by fog and rain. Again, that's back east. No word on injuries or fatalities. Boy, that's been a tough night, so we're going to leave you with a story that'll probably cheer you up a little bit, at least make you smile. When we reached our newsroom that the giant mural of tennis star John McEnroe was about to be painted over, reaction varied from what to huh to who cares? Well, somebody must. So we've entered Hollywood Near Vine to see what others think. I'm going to leave that mural up. What? I don't know, everybody, it's like a landmark. I think we better change it now. Something different, you know. Some want it to stay, some say go. Maybe it matters if the McEnroe mural will be replaced by one of Bo Jackson. Bo Jackson? Yeah, he's that, wait a minute, he's a boxer? Is that a boxer? Or a singer? I know one of the two. No, no, no, Bo Jackson, the baseball football player. Yeah, yeah, that's right, that's the one that was a baseball player, then a football player. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I don't like that guy anyway. Anyway, it will be Bo Jackson in for John McEnroe, which leads us back to our newsroom reaction. What? Huh? Who cares? Save the Mac. Save the Mac. Andy cares greatly. That's our news back Monday at 8 and 9. We'll see you then. Have a nice weekend. Thank you. Thank you. You'll see an old woman hit with a pie. The Hit Spot hits somebody you love today. Yes, I do. Have you ever rolled dice before? Sure. This big? No. Well, you're going to have fun with these. Good luck, Lillian. Let's say hello to our champion with $15,764. This is Rob Scaniel. Please have to double check that name. From San Diego, California. Rob, you're a stockbroker, correct? That's right. And an honor grad of a national university. That's correct. I went to J.C. in the daytime, went to national at night, and I received my bachelor's in two years. Well, congratulations on that. Thank you. And also congratulations on all your winnings so far. Thank you. Let's load the board and get started with a brand new match. I promised you this, so let's get going with it. In column one, Dean Goss, tell us what we have. This column has a potential value of $12,680, which makes the possible value of the entire board $17,542. $17,000 plus the value of the board. Let's see the numbers. You've got to deal with them, so let's take a look. Hot column for your game is column two, meaning a roll of a nine will give you a trip to anywhere. And the World Time Map worth $3,685. All right, being first with the right answer gives you control of the black and white. So here we go. Is a haymaker a punch you drink or a punch you throw? It's a punch thrown. That's right. It's a punch you throw. That's right. It sounds like you've thrown a few of those haymakers. Wink. I want a nine. Nine. Nine. I want to go on a trip. Three. Three. Okay, Wink. Let me have the one and the two. All right. Off comes the one and the two in columns one and two. In what famous writings would you find the phrase, a time to love, the Bible or the Kama Sutra? Rob. The Kama Sutra. No, the Bible. The Bible. The words, a time to love. Okay, Lily, if you get to roll all the numbers, you're good. I want an eight. I want an eight. I want an eight. Give me an eight. And you got a four. I'll take the four. All right. Before it comes off, here's your next question, players. Tom Jones or Anthony Nulli. What singer was once married to the Remarkable... How about it, Lillian? Tom Jones. No, Anthony Nulli was once married to the Remarkable Joan Collins. So once again, Rob, you control the fate of the dice. Four is the bad roll. Wink. I want to roll. All right. Roll away then. We'll stay away from that four. Here we go. And you came up with a nine. Okay. I will take the three and the six. Three and the six come off. All right. So it leaves one number in column two and one number in column three. A couple of great prizes in both those columns. According to advice from Cosmopolitan magazine, which of these should you never wear two days in a row? The same shoes or the same bra? Lillian? The same shoes. No, the same bra. It says here, now I don't know. I'm just giving you the facts as they give them to me, folks. Bras get too stretched if worn on consecutive days. Take that for what it's worth. All right. Rob. The bad rolls are three, four, six, ten, and eleven. You want to roll them or give them to Lillian? Wink. I have to give them to Lillian. All right. Lillian. Here, Lillian. Now, here's what you want to roll. Either a five, seven, eight, nine, or twelve. All right? Okay. Give me a nine. You win this game. Five, seven, eight, nine, or twelve. It's a six. Bad roll. Rob, you get the game. Sorry about that. The car is the right tool for the job. Nissan, built for the toughest race of all, the human race. Put the whole world in your hand with an affordable Radio Shack cellular car phone. Only $7.99. Look at the whole world in your hand. Only at Radio Shack, the technology store. The Dallas Cowboys. Herschel Walker leads their attack. The Los Angeles Rams will counter with Charles White. They meet on ABC's Monday Night Football. The first half has been played with fits and starts. 13 to nothing, San Francisco. Chicago has it at the 35-yard line tonight. The 49er defense doing the job against Chicago on the ground. Holding them to less than three yards a carry. And they start here on first and 10 from the 35-yard line with Payton as the tailback. He stays in the block. And Tom Zack throws and has it picked off. Third interception. Michael Walter. Inside the 40, down to the 35-yard line. And that's three interceptions and a fumble recovery for the 49ers. And a marker is down on the runback at the 40. And again, it's a question of Mike Tom Zack not seeing somebody coming back out from underneath, getting in front of a receiver. This one he should have seen though, Dan. Yeah, Michael Walter we're going to see is working back to the inside. Mike Tom Zack never sees him. Look at 99 working out underneath, inside. Cap Bozo, the intended receiver. Ball poorly thrown. Michael Walter makes a nice play. Back from the inside. And Mike Tom Zack, a tough, gritty competitor, is capable of making some horrendous throws at times. We have a low block on number 18 of Chicago. Penalty on sports tonight. First down. That's Tom Zack. That's one of the new rules this year. On a change of possession like that, on an interception, you must block above the waist. You're not supposed to be flying low in there. And how does Mike Tom Zack get called? He may just have been ducking to get out of the way. He actually comes in and, trying to protect himself, actually hits someone low. We're going to be able to take a look at it. Here's Mike Tom Zack right in the middle of that pile. Here's Mike Tom Zack watching go low. And that's going to be a 15-yard penalty. But I thought the intention... I mean, that's a 49er football. The 49ers are the ones doing the blocking. The Bears are the ones who cannot block. And the 49ers, Mike Tom Zack... How the heck could that... Was just protecting himself. Exactly. Just ducking. I mean, Mike Tom Zack's a defensive player. The intention was protection. How does he get called for blocking low? Oh, nifty rule. First and 10, San Francisco now from the 20-yard line. And here's Craig, who's stopped at the line of scrimmage. Second and 10, Singletary and Perry in on the stop. The rule says after a change of possession, neither team can block low. Well, certainly one doesn't want to block low. Now, wait a minute. Now, there's a question. That's a block? Well, what's the alternative for the quarterback to do? Stand there and get knocked into the seats? That's a duck. I mean, he was ducking. No ducking below the knees. I mean... Oh, well, I know it's a tough game, but you're not supposed to just stand there and take it to chops. So he's had three interceptions. Peyton's lost a fumble. He's had a penalty called on him. Five touchdowns this year and 17 interceptions. And on second and 10, Young to run. And he's been proficient doing this as he's taken down at the 13-yard line. In the air tonight, he's two out of nine. Now, let's go back and look at that play again. Now, the interception has already been thrown. Michael Walter, number 99, right here, has the ball. But here's Mike Tomczak. Now, here comes a 49er intent on blocking him. And Tomczak really is just looking for a place to hide. I mean, he's just going down, protecting himself. He doesn't... he's got his hands on the ground. I'm a quarterback. That's not in my game. I'm just protecting myself. Jeff Fuller is coming in to try to take the guy's head off. He drops to the ground and gets a penalty like that. I'm sorry. I can't buy that. That rule needs to be altered. Third and three at the 13-yard line. Young for Clark. Touchdown. If I was Don Meredith, I'd be tempted to sing. Wow. Dwight Clark, and he better than any 49er, knows what it's like to run along the back line of that end zone. 19... what was it? 81? 81. Championship, NFC against Dallas. Much the same, only Montana was passing. He was rolling out the other way. And this time, all the way across the field, Clark working against Jackson. He picked up help from Todd Bell and at the back of the end zone, used his height. Big target touchdown. Worshink kicks it through, and the 49ers have dominated the first half, despite losing Joe Montana. Steve Young isn't completing many passes, but the majority seem to be going for touchdowns, and the 49ers flexing their muscles. We've seen that angle before, but not often this score. At Braun, we believe simple is better than complicated. Order is better than confusion. Quiet is better than loud. Only through superior design can one achieve superior performance. The stars are gonna twinkle and shine, how they'll shine this evening about a quarter to nine. I know I won't be late, oh, that happy day. I'm gonna hurry there, I'll be waiting where... They say time is what you make it. At Citizen, we prefer making it beautiful. About a quarter to nine. Dwight Clark has indicated this will be his final season. And if so, he's gonna go out with a flourish. He caught a touchdown pass against Cleveland two weeks ago. Catches one here tonight. And meanwhile, Jim Harbaugh loosens up for Chicago. It's been a dreadful first half for Tomzak with three interceptions. And the rookie out of Michigan is getting loose. Worshing kicks off. From the nine yard line, it's Gentry. And caught down at the 19 by Darren Como. Again, that's three tackles for him. The 49ers have done a pretty bad job this season, generally speaking, covering kicks. But tonight, good work, especially from that man, Como. And Mike Tomzak stays in. That quarterback for the Bears. And it is pretty tough to get anything done with those turnovers. Interception, fumble, interception, fumble, and look how they translate the points. That doesn't even reflect the offside, the illegal movement. It's gonna self-destruct tonight for the Bears. First and 10 from the 20 yard line. Payton. Now to the 24 yard line, stopped by Jeff Stover. The Bears don't know what it takes to come from behind. They did it against Tampa Bay earlier this season. And Chicago has been pulling out victory after victory this season. But one big thing tonight is Jim McMahon is not in uniform. He can't rescue him. And they didn't do it at Candlestick Park against the 10 and 2 49ers. 49ers might be playing the best football of any team in the National Football League right now. Second down and 6 from the 24 yard line. 2.55 to go in the half. Tomzak. Lies time, throws out to the 40 yard line. Caught there by Dennis McKinnon, first down Bears. Good work on the part of McKinnon. He was covered initially when Tomzak rolled out under the pressure. And McKinnon kept moving around, jockeying around there until he finally got an open spot. And Tomzak was able to get into him. You can see, good shot there. McKinnon jockeying, giving finally an angle. And he gets away just in time from Griffin to get the completion. But I've got to bring something up here. What are the Bears doing? Walking back to the huddle. Walking up to the line of scrimmage. There's 2.15 left in his hand. They're down by 20 points and they're in no hurry to run a play. And the clock as you see down under 2.10. On first and 10 from the 40 yard line. Out to the 45. The catch is made there by Neil Anderson. And he's dropped after a pick up of five. And that takes us to the two minute warning. I mean coaches talk about having to have a sense of urgency. If I'm down 20 to nothing, hey, you better believe I feel some urgency. And I don't know what the Bears do right now. All across America, the teams of the National Football League bring you a celebration of competition. The NFL takes pride in its 68 years of tradition and in creating the first charitable foundation in professional sports, NFL Charities. Where NFL clubs set aside competition on the field and work together for a common goal. A better future for all of us. Commissioner Pete Rozell. It's our way of complimenting the local voluntary efforts of our players, coaches and club presidents. NFL Charities is our way of saying thank you. By supporting such programs as the United Negro College Fund, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and over 100 worthwhile programs. NFL Charities in just the past 13 years has committed more than seven million dollars to fight alcohol and drug abuse, promote safety in sports and provide human services. NFL Charities is making a difference in the lives of people. This message furnished by the National Football League. And tonight, NFL Charities grant commitments totaling $125,000 for expanded research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Those grants announced tonight. The grants were for $100,000 to the National Muscular Dystrophy Association and $25,000 to the San Francisco ALS Research Foundation. Accepting the checks from 49ers owner Ed DiBartolo Jr. are on behalf of the MDA, former 49ers quarterback Bob Waters, who has been stricken by this disease. And Dr. Stanley Appel of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. And on behalf of the ALS Foundation, Dr. Forbes Norris of the Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center in San Francisco, Andy Loris Holden. Two minutes to play in the first half. Chicago first and 10 or make it the second down and five from the 45 yard line. They have all three tie-outs remaining. 49ers lead 20 to nothing. Second and five. Sanders first down. And he gets to the 49 or 46 where he's tackled by Kenia Turner. And now the Bears come up without a huddle first and 10 at the 46 yard line. Again, all of their timeouts left. But Gault is out of bounds and the clock is stopped with a minute and a half now. Tomzack throwing in complete second down and 10. Good year halftime report tonight and we're going to take a look at the playoff picture. In both the AFC and the NFC, Jim Kelly, the quarterback of the Buffalo Bills live. And Ed DiMardolo, the owner of the 49ers, talking about the controversial bonus payments, which he will give to his team for making it into the playoffs. Second and 10. Tomzack. Caught at the 39 and he fumbled. And the 49ers get it back on Chicago's fifth turnover of the half. Don Griffin comes up with a fumble and Diptoe can't believe it. Dennis Gentry spits up the ball. Good news, bad news. He fumbles, but he makes a nice open field tackle after the fumble. And Dennis Gentry turns the ball over, ends up making the play. A good throw by Mike Tomzack, who had some nice protection. Up comes a hit by Jeff Fuller. That strips the ball. And right back in it, Dennis Gentry pulls down Don Griffin. And that is so typical of what the Bears are doing tonight. This is turning into a nightmare for the Bears. What a half. Five turnovers. 49ers on top, 20 to nothing. And now San Francisco with all of its timeouts remaining from the 42-yard line. 122 left in the half. And they'll look for more as Young goes to the air. Caught at the 48 and that's fumbled. And the Bears have it at the 45-yard line. Terry Rice. And instantly, I think back to last night, we're standing here talking to Bill Walsh about Jerry Rice. And I said, Coach, is this guy the perfect receiver? And what did he say? He said if he has one fault, he often mishandles the ball after the reception. Remember the playoff game last year in New York where he dropped the ball in the open field when he's running with it. Here he has it. Just doesn't cleanly put it away. Dent strips it. And Singletary is there, but it's covered by Todd Bell. The Bears get it back. Still have their timeouts. They have 115. I bet Walsh will still let him start the second half though. Yeah, I get that feeling. First down at the 46. Tom Zach from the shotgun. Swings it out to Anderson. He got by McKire. And then his run out of bounds to stop the clock near the 45-yard line with 107 to play in the half. Good thinking Anderson down the sidelines. Did not try to break it back to the middle end. He got a lot more out of it. He just picked up the first down marker and the sticks on the other side of the field. So even though he hit the marker, they are going to bring the sticks in and come up with a measurement. Ball will be at the 44-yard line as they bring the chain across the field. 107 to play in the half. And it will be second down and inches. 49ers with a touchdown and a field goal in the first quarter. Touchdown and a field goal in the second quarter. Favored by five coming in. Leading 20 to nothing. They are treating the hamstring pull of Montana in the locker room. Nothing appears to be serious though. He won't play tonight. And they don't know about next week yet. But nothing serious is the report from the 49er locker room. Second and one from the shotgun. And open but overthrown is Dennis Gentry. Wide open is Dennis Gentry. He'll never want anything more wide open than to prevent defense. 49ers with six defensive backs and he splits the gap wide open. Tomzak, no one in his face. He has plenty of protection and just overthrows the football. 49ers just falling back into that deep zone and right in that intermediate range was Gentry. And like Tomzak just had a little too much arm. Third down. It's used at the 44 yard line. And they need the first down so they give it to the money man Peyton and he gets it at the 35 yard line. They had to think about the first down there, third and inches, and they have all their timeouts left so they still have plenty of time. With 52 seconds. And they will spend their first time out right here. San Francisco just kind of gave them the first down there, Frank. They had their four linemen on the line of scrimmage and every linebacker and defensive back who was back in that nickel coverage was a good eight or nine yards back off the line of scrimmage. That's interesting. They just concede the first down. Only that they perhaps thought they would not even go for it. But they were certainly out of position. They get the first down and they get a chance to talk it over the sidelines and he used the offensive coordinator in there. We'll be traveling to the West Coast again next Monday. Rams on a roll. Charlie White. They won five in a row Frank and they still have a chance to get into the playoffs. We'll detail that at halftime. They'll take on the Dallas Cowboys at Anaheim Stadium next Monday. The Cowboys and there are enough stories there even though they are not playoff bound. They've had their second consecutive losing season and the resurgent Los Angeles Rams. What a story though Charlie White. 159 more yards yesterday. This keeps rolling on. First and 10. Bears from the shotgun. 35 yard line. Pump fake. Going deep. Too deep. And slipping down is Willie Gould. Once he got out on that rubberized surface along with Tim LaKire the two went down as if they were on a skating rink. Second down. That's a ball that Mike Tomczak A threw into double coverage and B threw it out of the end of the stadium where Willie Gould really has no chance of coming down with it. But really pretty Tim LaKire going up timing his leap and getting a hand on the football. Mike Tomczak at times gives you the impression that he makes up his mind at the snap of the football where he's going to throw the football Frank and come you know what in high water he delivers it. The way the 49ers play this with their 60-50 backs about the only place you can be sure of getting an open man is something like he had gently open a while ago something down the middle and that's going to use time. They'll give you that one. On second and 10. Tomczak scrambling away and throws back over the middle intercepted as a flag down running a lot where the interception brings it back to the 45 flag thrown down at the 32 just as. Lot was making the interception. Mike might have a word or two at the half. Maybe ineligible receiver offense number 63 downfield. He's declined. First down San Francisco. Again it's a situation where Mike Tomczak tries to make something happen he rolls out of the pocket from the rush but throwing off balance just gets the ball tipped in front one of the 49ers gets his hand on the ball. Jeff Fuller and Ronnie lot makes the pick. Great ones always around the football Ronnie lot the Travelers man of the year for the 49ers or his efforts off the field as well as on and we'll pick up the NFL's Travelers man of the year at the Super Bowl. Rathbun takes it out to the forty six as the Niners appear to be content as a flag now goes down. San Francisco ready to run out the clock and go in up 20 to nothing and a marker is down. The average of 16 per first half this year on sportsman like conduct on the offense number 87 for under the head 15 yards. Quite far. Not often you get a wide receiver flag for an unsportsman like penalty. A forearm to the head. Why do I like the tall slim angular one. Soon to be known as the T.J. Tuckers of the West. The restaurant tour just opened up a new restaurant. Redwood Shores about a half hour south of here. It is on the outside he's working with Besty Jackson and not designed to put you away though is it. I don't think it cracked his plastic helmet. First and twenty five and young will go down to one day and unless the Bears stop it that's going to be the end. Not real pretty but very fruitful for the 49ers and Mike Pidka heading for the locker room. Look out plaster. Bill Walsh and his team on its way to an 11th victory in 13 at least the way the first half transpires they lead 20 to nothing Montana done. And we'll be back after this message from the NFL and a word from your local station. It's got to be the alley. That was me. And that ability to reach just a little bit higher was what ensured my place in NFL history in my career as a player and throughout my life. I've always strived to reach to be the best I could be. San Francisco at halftime over the Chicago Bears. Surprisingly 20 to nothing. And our halftime is being brought to you by the Goodyear tire and rubber company. No matter how far you go Goodyear takes you home. At the beginning of the game we were talking about home field advantage. Of course the Bears are not thinking about that right now. Even though with a win tonight and a win in the remaining two games. They could collect that home field advantage. And they're going to be able to get that home field advantage. 49 is of course also thinking about it somewhat. But they are also concerned about New Orleans. But they are in full command of this game thus far. Interestingly enough as we talk about the NFC. So many things already decided. In the AFC absolutely nothing is decided. Eleven teams with two games remaining are still in the running. Four division titles. And that is really hard to believe. Six of them however are in total command of their own fate. Let's take a look at first the central division of the AFC. And as you can see Cleveland and Pittsburgh are knotted at the top there ahead of Houston. All of them alive for that division. But if Cleveland or Pittsburgh can win their final two games. They will be the division champion. And of course they meet on the final Saturday of the NFL season. So that will be the determiner. And that will be the final Sunday that they will meet. Okay now let's go over to the Western division. And Denver is in pretty good shape here. They play their final two games at home against Kansas City and San Diego. But the key here as all three of these teams are alive for a divisional title. Is the fact that Denver can by winning those two games against Kansas City and San Diego. They can also win the home field advantage right through the playoffs. So if Denver can win those two they will have home field advantage right through the playoffs. And here is really a mess in the AFC Eastern division. This one after this next week could be all tied at seven. But right now it's Buffalo Indianapolis and Miami. They have it all tied at the top with seven to six marks. But Buffalo has the edge here. And how long has it been since we've been able to say that. Buffalo with the win in their final two games. And they play New England at home this Sunday. And then they play Philadelphia the following week. Well if they can win those two they are going to be the divisional titles. But everyone is still alive in that AFC Eastern division. Meanwhile Buffalo rolled on again yesterday over Indianapolis. And again it was Jim Kelly having a fine day as he played behind a great defense. And here is Kelly firing a touchdown pass to Ronnie Harmon. Kelly now with a touchdown pass and at least one touchdown pass in 18 consecutive games. And here's Kelly once again hitting another former USFL star. Trumaine Johnson as the Buffalo Bills rolled over Indianapolis 27 to 3. Of course it was a week ago they beat Miami 27 to nothing. So they are playing very good defensive football. And they are very high on this team. And we are going to go now to Jim Kelly up in Buffalo. Jim we apologize for having the phone in your ear. But we are delighted you are with us. And first of all you have got things turned around up there. Let's talk about that defense before we get to the offense. They have been absolute superb. They shot out Miami a week ago and then 27 to 3 yesterday. They sure have. They've come on. I'll tell you what it definitely makes the offense a lot better. Bruce Smith in the added addition to Cornelius Bennett. They won Shane Collin to move in the middle. It's definitely helped not only our defense as a whole but our offense. It gets us back on the field. It gives us a lot more plays. I mean yesterday we ran 84 plays. And I can't remember the last time Buffalo has done that. Six turnovers and I think it was five sacks by the defensive team. That was very impressive. Cornelius Bennett using him much like the wit of Lawrence Taylor or Ricky Jackson. Definitely. He's so quick from the outside. It's hard to just put one offensive guy on him. I mean you have to even double team him. But on the other side you have Bruce Smith and of course Fred Smirlis in the middle and Shane Collin. It's tough. I'll tell you what our defense is getting a lot better. And one main thing is they're all very young. So it looks pretty bright for the Buffalo Bills in the future. All right. Let's talk about Jim Kelly having a big year. Jim another two touchdowns yesterday. Now you have one touchdown pass in at least one touchdown pass in 18 consecutive games. Getting a feel of it. Getting the touch of it. You've got this team really on the move. It definitely feels good. My receivers have been doing a good job. Andre Reed, Chris Burkett, Ronnie Harmon. I think two out of three are in the top three in receiving the AFC. Of course we're trying to get that running game going. Anytime you get that going it enables the passing game to open up. It takes a little pressure off the quarterback. And Ted Marchbrot, our offense coordinator, has done an unbelievable job with the quarterbacks. And again Ted Tolan, our receiver coach, his first year here, has gotten the receivers running the precise routes that the quarterback needs. New England coming up. Your thoughts on New England followed by Philadelphia. They're tough. I mean Andre Tippett, which is probably leading the league in sacks. They have a very solid defense. Last week Steve Grogan had a big game. So it's going to be definitely a big game not only for the offense but for the defense too. We're going to have to shut them down. Okay Jim, we want to thank you very much for joining us. Congratulations thus far. Two more to go for the Buffalo Bills. And meanwhile we're at halftime here in San Francisco. The 49ers over the Bears. 20 to nothing. We'll be right back. Take me back where I belong. Take me where it's safe and warm. The Goodyear Vector is the all season radio that pumps water away to keep more tire tread on the road. And for some that's a comforting thought. Take me home. Goodyear, take me home. Then it's the USF&G Sugar Bowl. Undefeated and fourth ranked Syracuse tackles the SEC champs. Sixth ranked Auburn. All Christmas and New Year's Day on ABC Sports. Well Frank brought you up to date on the rather complicated AFC playoff picture and the possibilities. The NFC is somewhat simpler in terms of four teams already having clinched playoff spots. But then it gets somewhat sticky. But we can simplify it this way. The playoff prospects Chicago and Washington have already clinched division titles. So they won't have to worry about playing a wild card game. If San Francisco wins the Western Division. Then they of course would advance to the second round. New Orleans would have to play a wild card game. Against one of four teams. Now interestingly St. Louis and Green Bay are still mathematically alive. But there they are. If Minnesota wins its final two games against Detroit and Washington. It's simple. The Vikings are in. But if they lose and let's say the Rams were to tie them. Minnesota would still go in. If Minnesota and the Rams wound up let's say with eight and seven marks. But if it was a three way tie. Between Minnesota, Los Angeles and St. Louis. The Rams would go in. If Minnesota and St. Louis were to wind up with eight and seven marks. St. Louis would go in. Green Bay has the scantest of chances. But they are still mathematically alive. But what it boils down to is that Minnesota will control its own destiny. With a couple of victories. Meanwhile we mentioned the Eddie DiBartolo situation. He offered $6,000 to each of the 49ers if they get into the playoffs as a wild card team. $10,000 if they get in as division champions. Didn't sit well with some of the other owners and execs around the league. I talked to him about it earlier. Asked him when he first came up with the idea. Alec goes back to mid-October, somewhere around the 18th of October after the strike was settled. I sat down with Bill Walsh and John McVeigh. Just discussed the whole scenario of the strike. I don't think anybody was happy with it. I know the players weren't. I know the management wasn't throughout the league. I was afraid of the continuity of our football team. I was afraid of their thinking. I was afraid of bringing them back. I really wanted to do something. What we did was we put an addendum on their contracts, which is an incentive clause which is in numerous NFL contracts. All it is is basically an incentive clause. I really think that it helped the team. I think it helped their mental attitude and I think it brought the team together. We were told by an NFL spokesman today that the matter is under review, as they put it, by the commissioner. Was this something that was checked out with the league before you went ahead and issued the addendums? John McVeigh, our general manager, checked it out with the league office before any letters went out to the players and before we did put an addendum on their contract. I was told at the time, so was Coach Walsh, that they had no problem with it. Were you surprised at some of the reactions that at least have been publicly stated through newspapers and radio and television accounts by some of the other executives in the league? Well, I really am because I don't know if it was totally understood at the time. I did this for my football team. And as I said, I did it to try and bring some unity back to a very sticky, lousy situation that neither management-like nor did the players association. And it was strictly an incentive, an addendum to the contract, like Joe Montana's got, like I'm sure Jim McMahon does and Vinnie Testaverde and a lot of other of the NFL players. And that's simply what it was. He's always been known as a players owner. And of course he has owned this team for two Super Bowl seasons, 1981 and 1984. And right now the 49ers appear to be, if not the best team in the National Football League, certainly one of the very best. Right now they are inspired through the first half to the tune of a 20 to nothing advantage over the Chicago Bears at Candlestick Park. And we'll be back to begin the second half right after this message. A simple country boy has simple needs, a house, a car, and the most advanced high-performance tires on the road. No matter how far you go, Goodyear takes you home. And we'll be back for the second half kickoff after a word about an upcoming show on ABC and then a break for your local news.
