I wouldn't expect Kelly or the Bill offense to take a chance.

If the Oilers can defeat the Bengals today they'd be back in the driver's seat for a
home field advantage all the way through the playoffs.

I think they've taken away a bit of an excitement a bit of an exciting play by allowing the
quarterback just to step back and throw it in the ground.
They're going to take a shot at the end zone here.

it a hair that wind will take over and just push the thing all the way out of the way
from the upright.
Norwood's 30 field goals by the way is a Buffalo record five short of the NFL record.
He's had 70 field goals in his four years with Buffalo.
The club record is 74 for career field goals.
Now he's going to try one more play.

And obviously the fans watching in
your hometown of Buffalo hoping
that the Bills can seize the
advantage again for home field
edge have to be happy.
Their club playing well against
the Raiders and unless the Bengals
stage a miracle comeback and it's
tough to do in Houston it'll be
Buffalo that'll have the
advantage.
Zendejas just kicked a field goal
so they go up 24 to 3 Houston.
So it'll be nice for the
championship game in Buffalo.

Detroit is playing at Chicago the
quarterbacks are Harbaugh and
Hillger and the game is tied at

third quarter Minnesota playing
at Green Bay.
The Vikings had a first and goal

running game all year long and

100 yards in this ballgame

twice responsible for 10 of the
points that Buffalo's gotten.
But their defense they're doing
it again holding the Raiders to
only seven points in the first
half.
You told me the Giants would have
no trouble with the Chiefs.
Well it's seven to three Kansas
City giving them a game in the
third quarter.
Your thoughts on that.
Well I think the Giants are going
to come back and finally stuff
the Chiefs and win the game by
what was it nine and a half I
think to spread or 10.
They'll cover that.
Couple of highlights we want to

yards had a pass intercepted in
the end zone.
They were booing him all over
the stadium.
But Eason came back out.

well and he has guided them to a
touchdown.

Welcome back to NFL Live and we're joined now by our good friend Frank DeFord who as
usual has a suggestion for the National Football League, a constructive suggestion which the
majordomos over on Park Avenue would do very well to heed.
Thank you very much Bob.

Well you see about this time of year they start coming out with these figures showing
what the inter-conference standings are.
Right now for example the AFC is leading 27 to 21.
The AFC always wins the stupid little games in October and then gets blown out in the
Super Bowl.
In this regard the AFC reminds me of the Democrats who win all the races for mayor and legislature,
all that nickel dime stuff but can't ever win the presidency.
So I'm very suspicious how important this conference stuff really is especially since
the whole league is screwed up geographically.
Atlanta's in the west and Phoenix and Dallas in the east and so on.
There haven't been any real traditional rivals since old Don Hudson and Bronco Nagurski.
So what we need is a modern alignment Bob, a modern alignment of the NFL only we should
divide the league up by something that matters, not geography, playing surface.
The two conferences would be the grass conference and the artificial conference.
In the artificial conference there would be two divisions.
The dome division will have Houston, Indianapolis, Detroit, New Orleans, Seattle, Minneapolis
and Dallas which doesn't have a whole dome but then it doesn't have a whole team either
so.
The other group in the artificial conference would be the synthetic division.
These are the teams that play outside but on a man-made field.
Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Buffalo, New England, Kansas City and Meadowlands 1
and Meadowlands 1A.
The good thing about this system is that the players coming out of college would get to
decide whether they want to play in the grass conference and get muddy or play in the artificial
conference and not have any knees when they get older.
Now naturally there are also two divisions in the grass conference.
First there's the tropical division where there is not only grass but where the grass
never gets snowed on.
This is Miami and Tampa Bay, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco and the Rams and Raiders
from La La Land.
And last is the frosty division where there is not only grass underfoot but also wind
and snow and sleet and stuff like that.
The frosty division includes Cleveland, Washington, Chicago, Atlanta, Green Bay and Denver.
Also I think that baseball should get rid of the old American and national leagues and
adapt this arrangement as well.
Put the St. Louis Cardinals and all the silly teams that hit singles and run around in circles,
put them in one league with artificial turf and Bob put the old fashioned teams all together
in the other league with old fashioned grass.
You know that the people in Atlanta are not going to be pleased that you placed them in
the frosty division.
Well it does snow in Atlanta sometimes.
Yes but it's very hot there at times as well.
But nonetheless it is not subtropical like Orlando and south.
Despite the little quibbles I believe this is an inspired idea.
I'm glad to hear you say that another idea might be to name these divisions like the
NHL after people.
Maybe you could think about that.
You know they name those things the Campbell division and the Smythe division.
I don't know who's in the Smythe division and who's in the Norris division.
Well nobody does but that would make it even more interesting.
I think for example the tropical division should be the Don Ho division.
That one.
I like that.
You like that?
Yeah that's very nice.
You like the Preston for the frosty division?
The Yukon division.
Yes absolutely.
That would be good.
And the dome division somebody with a dome.
The synthetic division.
Who might that be?

fans loving it as the Buffalo Bills hold a 20 to 7 half time edge on the Los Angeles
Raiders.
Here are some first half highlights.
The Buffalo Bills got an excellent run from their rookie Thurman Thomas who pounded 37
yards up the middle after good blocking from the offensive line for a 37 yard score to
put Buffalo in command of the game.
The Raiders only score.
Did you see Thomas with 91 first half yards to lead all rushers in the game so far?
The Raiders got their only score from in close as Steve Smith pounded it over from about
one yard out and the Raiders, though they have moved the ball fairly well at times,
have been guilty of some costly mistakes that have hurt their chances in the first half.
It's 20 to 7 as we get ready for the second half of play.
Joe, it has been mistakes by the Raiders that have been the story of the half.
That's right, I think Schrader's been playing reasonably well, putting the ball where he
should be putting it most of the time.
They've had dropped passes that have hurt their drives and stopped their drives.
They've had some penalties that haven't been good.
So I think the Raiders have hurt themselves more offensively than the Bills defense.
Of course, Smith made a big play knocking the ball loose from Schrader but Schrader
dropped the ball on his own in a draw play.
And the Buffalo offense seems to have found itself now after a real subpar performance
a week ago.
Oh sure, the offensive line's doing a good job in the running game.
Giving Kelly plenty of time to pass.
And I guess they're right back in the hunt for this home field advantage now, the way
the Houston Cincinnati game is going.
Things really going Buffalo's way with the Oilers with a substantial lead over the Bengals
right now.
What about the home field advantage?
Do players dread coming to Buffalo to play?
Yeah, they don't like the idea of coming here.
Not just because of the weather though, Tom.
I mean, we're all talking about how cold it is and how nasty it can be later on in the
year.
But the turnout that these guys get here with the Bills, the 75,000 to 80,000 people in the
stadium does a whole lot to help control the emotion of the team during the game.
They make a lot of noise that works against the Bills' opponent and then they quiet down
to help out Kelly and his offense.
So it's more than just a weather advantage.
Well, the fans have been great here and turning out today at eight degrees temperatures at
game time and a big crowd here.
Perhaps enough we don't have the official attendance figures yet to break the all time
NFL home attendance record.
Let's take a look, Joe, at the first half stats and see what we can see from the numbers.
Well, the Bills are dominating every category, I guess, except yards passing.
And that's been because of the turnovers of the Raiders.
The Raiders looked all right for a while until they hurt themselves.
Neither team has a lot of accuracy passing right now, but they've had some dropped balls.
That turnover ratio right there, two to none, well, that tells most of the story offensively.
How does the ball feel to a quarterback on a cold day like today?
Is it harder than normal?
It is.
It feels harder.
It's cold.
The ball is slick.
I don't know that the ball changes so much, but your hands get cold.
Even with those muffs that Jay Schrader has on right now with the muff, you keep your
hands reasonably warm, but that pigskin gets slick when it gets cold and it's hard to throw.
But hey, I haven't seen Schrader's accuracy suffering or Kelly's.
I think it's been some good defensive plays by the Raider defensive backfield to knock
down a few of Kelly's passes.
And of course, the Raider receivers have been dropping the ball on a couple of few occasions.
Both quarterbacks had little mini slumps there at the end of the half.
I think Kelly went seven straight incompletions and the Schrader six.
So after hot starts, they cooled off a little bit.
But as you said, a lot of those were accounted for good defensive plays or simply dropped
balls by the receivers.
The sun making a little showing here on one side of Rich Stadium.
The snow banks along the sidelines are still there.
We haven't had any real substantial snowfall since the game began.
A couple of flurries, but the field has not been cleaned since before the game.
They've got a sort of brush contraption that comes off to clean the astroturf of snow.
And you see that it has done its work earlier with the snow drifts on the sideline.
Well, they did clean the field a few times, but it has stopped snowing.
The footing has been good and the wind really hasn't been a major factor yet.
Norwood's last field goal was a short attempt so the wind didn't bother it.
I haven't seen many long passes in the game yet to where the wind would affect them.
So the weather is close to ideal with the exception of the temperature.
Close to ideal.
You told me before you said that the wind is the quarterback's biggest enemy, not the
cold and not the rain.
Oh, sure.
That's right.
The wind does tricks with the ball, both against the quarterback and as well as in the kicking
game, too.

And we're ready to start the second half.
Andy Parker downfield made the tackle for the Raiders and Buffalo with the first offensive
opportunity to open the second half, leading the Raiders by a 20 to seven count.
The play selection was very good for most of the first half on part of Buffalo.
They mixed the run and pass very well, I thought.
Yes, and I thought the Raiders did, too.
The Raiders didn't execute as well, but both offenses have opened up, throw and mixing
in the runs well.
First down run by Jamie Mueller.
Not much there.
Mueller twists forward, got a couple.
Matt Millen, a former Penn State linebacker, gets credit for the tackle.
The All-Pro back in 1985 and all American from Penn State, a lot of talented Penn State
linebackers on the field today.
Oh, you know, Millen doesn't mind playing in this kind of weather.
He played there in Penn State up there at College Park, and I guess he kind of likes
it a little bit.
He's mean enough not to feel the cold weather.
Thomas, stopped short of a 30-yard line and short of a first down.
He's going to set up about third and five or so for the Bills.
He's closing in on 100 yards, and we're just in the opening minutes of the third quarter.
That's Russell Carter injured on the play.
Well, while they tend to Carter gives us a chance to take a break, 14.02 left in the
third and Buffalo on top.

Kelly and the teeth of the Blitz sends it intended for harm and incomplete.

Eddie Anderson was in good position to coverage, but it was Robinson, number 57, here you see
on the screen, forcing Kelly to get this ball off just a little bit earlier than he'd like.
So a good defensive stand by the Raiders on the opening series of the third quarter.
And John Kidd is on to punt for the Buffalo Bills.
Kelly perhaps banged his throwing arm a little bit there as he went down.
Kidd with a punt sends it toward Tim Brown.
Brown handles it.
Still loose.
The Bills have it.
Sherman Koukrov makes the recovery and another turnover for the Raiders.
They're third of the day.
Well, folks, it's not a hard ball to handle.
It's right there.
You won't see Tim Brown mishandling many punts.

Van McElroy, the free safety had to come up to stop Thomas, who is coming up on a 100-yard
rushing day.
We mentioned earlier that Mike Rozier of Houston having a big day and Thurman Thomas limping
to the sideline, having surpassed the century mark.
He was the number two rusher in Big Eight history with 4,595 yards trailing only Mike
Rozier.
Thurman comes in to replace Thomas.
It'll be close to a first down.
The Bills can pick up a first down.
Scott Davis on the tackle for the Raiders.
Well, if the Bills get in the end zone this time, they've got to feel mighty good.
There's Davis who made the tackle the last play.
The Bills would feel very good and comfortable with 27 points if they could get it in the
end zone.
And what we'd see, I would hope, would be the Raiders coming out there and throwing
a lot of passes to those special wide receivers.
I'd still like to see them get more action, Tom.
This offense, I know it's an offense of the 80s and it's a scheme type offense, but I'm
not too sure that I'd be scheming with the offense with the kind of personnel I have
in Lofton and Galton, Fernandez and Timmy Brown.
My goodness.
I know they run the ball a lot.
The Raiders do to help pass protection, but I'm sure Shanahan's main concern right now
is holding the Bills to just three points.
Well, you see a decision coming up for the Buffalo Bills.
They were just short of the first down.
They were just short of the first down.

They were just short of the first down.
They were just short of the first down.
And so they can still make a first down without scoring a touchdown.
They just spunk the ball on the two just inside the two yard line, and it'll be third down
coming up.
Riddick and Byrum are in at the running backs for the Bills as Thomas and Harmon go out.
I don't know if he made it or not.
But Haynes not fooled on the play as Kelly faked it to Riddick and then kept it on a rollout.
He didn't fool anyone with that fake.
You see Kelly go ahead and pretend like he's giving it to Riddick and then try and sneak out around the corner.
But Mike Haynes bred the play all the way, and so did Russell Carter.
They were both in excellent position to stop Kelly.
They're going to measure again to see if he picked it up.
If it's fourth down, what do you do?
Kick the field goal or go for it on fourth and inches?
Well, I'd kick the field goal myself, Paul. That would force the Raiders to have to score three different times.
Of course, a touchdown would be good, but I think at this stage of the game on fourth down, you go for the field goal,
especially with that lead and the way your defense has been playing.
Well, you were on the same wavelength from Marv Levy in the first half, but not this time.
He's going to go for it.
And I don't understand why.
What's he trying to put him away here?
And he may very well be trying to put him away.
But if the Raiders are able to rise to the occasion to stop it, it'll be a tremendous lift for the Raiders, Morrell.
So fourth and inches for Buffalo.
Riddick and Byron with the running backs.
Byron the fullback and Riddick the tailback in the I-formation.
So the gamble pays off for the Buffalo Bills and Mike Shanahan and the Raiders, after turning the ball over,
see it result in a Buffalo touchdown on the Riddick run.
Jim Richard, number 51, and Will Walford did a tremendous job of blowing the Raiders off the line
to enable the back to get in for the touchdown.
Riddick, I mean, it was just good blocking up front.
Once again, they went to the weak side of the offense that time.
They made a strength in the formation to the right, and the Bills took it back to the weak side.
I believe they fooled the Raiders as well.
Riddick has now scored 12 rushing touchdowns this year.
Norwood with the extra points.
And it's good.
So a Tim Brown fumble returns into a Buffalo touchdown.
And with 12.34 left in the third quarter, the Bills have upped their lead.

You're going to see him air it out to those wide receivers.

Now, this Bill defense has suffered some injuries during the course of the game.
Art Still has sprained his knee, and Shane Conlon has re-aggravated a foot injury,
and they are not on the field and will not return today.
It's a good thing they have a 20-point lead.
Two key members of that excellent Bill defense, sidelined by injuries today.

Bo again. Bo's got a first down and more.
He's in the Bill territory to the 45-yard line.
Leonard Smith and Mark Kelso were hanging on to Bo for dear life and finally got him down,
but it went for 14 yards, and maybe you don't have to throw if you've got a Bo Jackson.

Now, if they can get running gainers like that, sure, they don't have to put the ball in the air,

Well, if you're the Raiders and you're getting yardage the way they have been
these last four carries or so, you'd want to keep the ball on the ground.
Things are looking good for them.
Right now they haven't decided whether they have a first down or not.
The officials are still trying to size it up, and they're going to bring the chains out there.
I said it was short. We're going to see.

Well, the tight end was so much a part of the Raider offense.
Todd Christensen injured, but only had 11 catches when he went down.
They just haven't been using the tight end enough in this game.
Of course, it's a new system, and the fellas on the team are just getting acclimated to it this season.
But you've got to be able to work that tight end into your offense more.
It helps the wide receivers avoid double-covering.
First down for the Raiders, from the 25 of the Bills.
Again, they keep it on the ground, and Bo Jackson keeps the legs pounding.
He takes it down inside the 15-yard line, Seals and Kelso.
Well, the Raiders didn't panic and go to the Helter Skelter passing game.
They've gone to Bo instead.
I would have panicked and put it in the air.
But meantime, I didn't have a running game like this,
and I didn't see this kind of running game by the Raiders earlier on either in the first and second quarter.
They have found the soft spot in that bill defense, and possibly it's because Still and Conner are out of the game.
That's right.
Great defenders against the run, Walt Corey said Art Still was the best defensive end against the run he'd ever seen.
Here's Schroeder on a bootleg, trying to get a block on the corner.
Tim Brown tight is mowing up for a while, and Schroeder is out of bounds inside the 10.
Oh, does that take some nerve to take a bootleg around Bruce Smiths and without a lead blocker?

Bo Jackson, of course, who's been doing the bulk of the work carrying the ball,
this time will make a little fake and let's see what Bo does.

The ball came flying through the air. Well, there was a flag on the plate too, so we don't know what that's about yet.
I'm surprised that, you know, there was a question whether this pass was complete or incomplete,
whether the ball went out of the end zone.
Let's see if he does make the catch here, if it's going to be ruled incomplete.
The ruling on the play is incomplete pass.
We had offside defense. We had illegal motion.
Two men moving off there.
Third down again at the line of scrimmage.
Need a calculator to figure all that out.
Yeah, it doesn't make any difference whether he had the ball or didn't have the ball.
The offsetting penalties have canceled the play either way.
Once again though, a golden opportunity for the Raiders, and they had a penalty to match Buffalo's penalty.
This could have given the Raiders a first down or better shot at scoring.
Now it's still third down once again.
They've been their own worst enemy today.
Third and four again from the Buffalo Seven.
Tenth play of the Raider drive, which has been mostly on the ground with Bo Jackson.
Marcus Allen to the five yard line.
He did not make the first down.
Leonard Smith and Leon Seals were ready for the running play to Allen.
And it'll bring up a fourth down.
And the Raiders have got to go for it trailing 27 to 7.
Yeah, they've got to try and get the seven points on.
Three points aren't, well that's not going to help them very much.
They are going to go for the first down as Bo Jackson's coming back onto the field.
Well he's going off and Steve Smith's coming onto the field to play that to me Joe.
I don't know, you know, it seems like I'd have my best runner.
I guess they have to figure that Smith's the better blocker in this way.
With the two good blockers in the backfield, Allen, Marcus Allen and Smith, the defense doesn't know for sure who's going to get the ball.
Two seconds on the play clock, they get it off.
Schrader being chased, passes it complete to Smith and then he, no it's incomplete.
He lost the ball, he fumbled the ball, he didn't have it long enough and the Raiders fail on their fourth down attempt.
Shanahan was trying to call for a timeout as he saw the play clock ticking down, but they got it away.
Schrader got the pass off, but it was fumbled and went incomplete and the ball will go over to the Buffalo Bills when we return to Ritz Stadium.

They're not a great deal. Sure, Lofton made a big play and so did Tim Brown.
But they had no consistent offense at all today.
What about Jim Kelly? How do you assess his performance?
Oh, Kelly had a good day. He didn't put the ball in the wrong place.
He was going to the right receivers. But I tell you what, there are a lot of quarterbacks around the league that could have operated this offense today.
I mean, that line just did a terrific job of blocking for Kelly.
Sure, he was accurate with some of his passing, but he got a lot of help from the rest of his pals today.
And the rookie Thomas with a 100-yard rushing game and less than three quarters of action.
That's the kind of football the coach Levy likes to see, that ground game and defense.
Schrader, Smith, wrapped him up, and he managed to get away.
And he completed it to Steve Smith. Smith was then hit by Cornelius Bennett.
I mean, who they fooling? What are the Raiders doing right now?
Go ahead and run the clock out. They're just taking chances on losing some people that they might need next week against Seattle.

The rain has been slowed down considerably and the ominous clouds continue to hang around Revere and the Pacific Palisade.
Maintenance people have made a gallant effort to get the course back in shape and hopefully we will be able to finish the final round of the 62nd Los Angeles Open.
During the rain delays, players took some refuge in unusual places.
Then who else would come out of a locker other than?

What kind of, I'm Pat Summerall with Ken Venturi, our CBS Golf Analyst.
Ken, what kind of a physical and mental effect does a rain delay like this have on the golfers?
Well everybody's been confused today, Pat, because they've been on and off, been on and off.
I think it's to Beck's advantage.
Beck has not won before, which has been a big subject.
The one thing I think about it, which I think about, is I'm glad they did not call the round off.
They would have given him the championship, but it would have been a hollow victory.
I think it's his tournament to win today.
And if he just keeps cool, just keeps us calm, he leads three players.
You've got Elkington, Fiore, and Haas, which he leads by three.
I think if he can stay around 71, the tournament's his.
Well, let's take a look at that leaderboard then.
As you said, Chip Beck leads by three strokes at 14 under over Jay Haas, Steve Elkington, and Ed Fiore, and then Tom Pertzer, and Mack O'Grady out of the locker and safely playing.
Mike Reed now has moved to minus 10, Bill Sander, Hal Sutton, and Ben Crenshaw, and Mike Hulbert.
Because of today's extensive rain delays, the Los Angeles Open will not conclude until several hours after the scheduled ending of our broadcast.
As a result, we'll be unable to continue our coverage past 6 o'clock Eastern Standard Time and 3 Pacific.
But we will have the final results tonight on CBS Sportsbreak.
What about Chip Beck, and what about the fact that he's finished second seven times down and has never won?
What kind of a mental burden does he carry?
I think the burden is coming from other people than himself.
I think finishing second seven times is not all bad. It's pretty good for the wallet.
But I think that everyone says he's playing well and he needs the victory, but he's playing strong, he's hitting the ball well, and I think what he has to do is forget the leaderboard, just make a plan, and what he has to play is a round par.
And I don't believe, I don't see anybody today making a hot run on him.
Well, as we said earlier, weather has been the story, principally the rain, temperature 63 degrees, humidity 80 percent, the wind southeast 10 to 15 miles an hour, the forecast is for continued showers.
So far they've been right. Let's go meet the announcers who will be covering the action in today's final round.
The tee shot is played with a mid-iron to a huge two-tiered green. Today's spin is in the back left corner.
I'm Jim Nansett. I'll be at 15. It's a dogleg right par four, eucalyptus trees lying the fairway.
It's played as one of the most difficult holes this week at Riviera.
It's also the spot where last year Ben Crenshaw lost in a sudden-death playoff to T.C. Chin.
I'm Gary McCord. I'll be on the 16th hole, a short downhill par three.
The problem here lies not in the small green, but in the four steep-lip bunkers that totally encircle this hole.
I'm Ben Wright. I'll be reporting the play from the 17th hole, a 578 yards par five.
Very few of the players go for the green in two shots, preferring to lay back and hit a wedge to a two-tiered green.
And the famous 18th. What about this par four, Kenny?
447 yards. It requires a left to right tee shot and a pin placed in the back left today because of conditions this hole is going to play very long.

Tenth hole is a very short hole. It's a layup hole. It's 311 yards.
And that's perfect position here because the green is set at an angle and the pin today is in far back.

You can drive this green on getting the right conditions, but you're still a long way from the hole and there's a bunker short of the green and a bunker in the back, you see, and a very narrow green.
And when it's hard, this green used to be almost impossible to hold the ball on.
The guy that just hit that shot is one who ought to make a move today, Jody Mudd.
Oh, I like that. That's good.
Nick Price will be next to hit.
With just a pitching wedge, no more than maybe 80, 90 yards. Watch the action on this.
The greens have been soft throughout the tournament.
Today, obviously, because of all the moisture and the humidity, they'll be softer than ever.
Well, that's why the scoring is so low, Pez, because the greens are soft, the fairways are fast, there's very little wind,
and the rough is just void of rough.
He has to come right over the top of the bunker. Good angle. Watch this. Pull up.
Good shot. Pull today is 75 feet back in front and that's 12 feet from the back edge, so that's a good shot.
Cut was even par, and here are some of the people with some big names who didn't make it.
Erwin Stadler, Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Larry Mai, Steve Pate, who's been on a roll.
It's hard for me to believe that at Riviera Country Club, the cut was even par, 142, par being 71, 35, 36.
That, unless you've played here, you don't realize how good these fellas can play.
You look back at what Chip Beck accomplished with his three-round total of 199, which broke Lanny Watkins' record.
That was a record that I think almost no one thought would ever be set to begin with or broken.
Well, the one he broke, I don't believe in that so much, but the one that I think is hard to believe is that Lanny then went out and shot 64,
so the course record is 264, and to think when Hogan shot 276, they thought that was the most phenomenal golf they've ever seen.
However, there have been some changes made. Riviera still has that historic reputation, still is held in such high esteem by almost everyone who plays here, but there have been some changes made.
That's right. They've changed the holes in 7, 8, a little bit at 6, 12, 13.
Here's a shot right here where you will not see the ball lay down anymore. The ball just sits up, makes the pitching and chipping around the green much easier.
It's a, there's where the scores have changed, is that the ball, when you see the players today, you'll see the ball in the rough.
You will very rarely not be able to see the ball.
And there were times when it just disappeared.
There were times like at 18, you had to look straight down to see the ball. You couldn't find it.
Nick Price aligning his goal with a birdie as the rain picks up again.
There are certain holes, this golf course has a very big variance of types of holes. The first hole is an easy par five, which you try to birdie.
The second is a 467-yard par four, and you just love to make par there. They've got some short par threes, they've got long ones. It's a combination of all shots.
Oh! Look out.
That ball breaks from right to left, and most, every, all the players from that position will miss the ball, the cup mostly to the left side.
This again is number 10, 311-yard par four.
So far, this is the way it has played, as Ken Venturi said. Well, if you look at the distance yardage, 311 yards, it's possible with the conditions ideal that you could drive it on the green.
There have been three eagles, 111 birdies.
I played in a pro-amp here once, and my caddy gave me the driver by mistake, and I said, you know, I didn't want to bring him back, so I thought that I would just bunt the driver down easy.
So I had to bunt it down, and I couldn't find my ball, and I kept yelling. I was on the green, and for years after, I would swing hard as I can to reach the green. I never reached it again.
There's a message.
Yes, there was, but I have never been smart enough to remember it. This is for birdie.

And he goes to five under par.
This is up at the sixth green, or back, I should say, back at the sixth green, and the maintenance staff trying to take care of things and get things in as good a shape as they possibly can.

Well, if it seemed like a lot of club, it was. He puts it through the back of the green.
Pavin playing in a group which includes the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am winner, Steve Jones and Bruce Litzke.
This 14th hole has really played fairly easy this year, but as we have seen in past rounds,
and we'll see all day today, the greens are soft and players can play a pretty good iron shot at the flagstick.
This 14th green must be about 40 yards from one side to the other. It is just huge.
It's almost a half wedge, if you will, from the top part of the green there in the left-hand side of your screen
to where the flagstick is today on the far left-hand corner is the golfer's play this 175-yard par 3 to 13.
13 is a par 4, 420 yards in length, and has been very difficult.
It's a slight dogleg to the left. It requires a right-to-left tee shot, and if you can spin the ball,
you can pick up a lot of yardies with the fairways being that fast.
And the one thing you do here, you watch, is you don't see it today because the hole today is on the right side of the green.
There's boundary just to the left of the green.
Billy Andrade for birdies, 500. 200 today.
Good putt. Billy's got the pants down inside the socks.
Modified knickers. Chip Beck is still at 14 under, only one player. Jay Haas is 11 within three shots.
In the meantime, back at 10, Davis Love, Jumbo Ozaki, and Fred Couples in this group. Davis.

Did that ball move the left all the time?

That was very humid and very moist, obviously. Ozaki now, and he too, with a birdie effort.
At 65, starting out the week, this is right down, straight downhill. He should make this. Just get it on track.
Let's go back to 14.
And you can see the way Pavin's ball reacted, just how soft these greens are. It actually makes the short game so much easier when you can pitch to soft surfaces.
We may see players from time to time today take relief from casual water. I know Jim Nance may have a problem at 15 with that swale that runs through the green. Let's go back to 10.
Davis Love, this is for par. Watch out.
Saw it break right to left, and it broke left to right on the second one. And back to 14.
Steve Jones. He was just off the putting surface. Now he would not get relief from any casual water on the green because he was off the surface itself.
Had he been just on the putting surface, he would have been entitled to relief.
Davis Love made his bogey at 10.

They needed to beat Norway or they would be eliminated, and they did win the game, six to three. The Russians over West Germany, Czechoslovakia blanked Austria.
In the women's downhill, the gold went to West Germany, the silver to Switzerland, the bronze to Canada, and the men's 15K cross-country, gold and bronze to the Russians, while Norway bagged silver, and in the men's double-lose, East Germany won gold and silver, while West Germany took the bronze.

The Piper Navajo was en route from Norwood, Massachusetts to Pomona, and I assume that's Pomona, New Jersey, not California, and it crashed when its radar signal was lost.
The hour-long search for wreckage was hampered by fog and rain. Again, that's back east. No word on injuries or fatalities.

San Francisco at halftime over the Chicago Bears.
Surprisingly 20 to nothing.

At the beginning of the game we were talking about home field advantage.
Of course the Bears are not thinking about that right now.
Even though with a win tonight and a win in the remaining two games.
They could collect that home field advantage.
49ers of course also thinking about it somewhat.
But they are also concerned about New Orleans.
But they are in full command of this game thus far.
And interestingly enough as we talk about the NFC.
So many things already decided.
In the AFC absolutely nothing is decided.
Eleven teams with two games remaining are still in the running.
Four division titles.
And that is really hard to believe.
Six of them however are in total command of their own fate.
And let's take a look at first the central division of the AFC.
And as you can see Cleveland and Pittsburgh are knotted at the top there.
Ahead of Houston.
All of them alive for that division.
But if Cleveland or Pittsburgh can win their final two games.
They will be the division champion.
And of course they meet on the final Saturday of the NFL season.
So that will be the determiner.
And that will be the final Sunday that they will meet.
Okay now let's go over to the western division.
And Denver is in pretty good shape here.
They play their final two games at home against Kansas City and San Diego.
But the key here as all three of these teams are alive.
For a divisional title is the fact that Denver can by winning those two games.
Against Kansas City and San Diego.
They can also win the home field advantage right through the playoff.
So if Denver can win those two.
They will have home field advantage right through the playoff.
And here is really a mess in the AFC eastern division.
This one after this next week could be all tied at seven.
But right now it's Buffalo, Indianapolis and Miami.
They have it all tied at the top with seven and six marks.
But Buffalo has the edge here.
And how long has it been since we've been able to say that.
Buffalo with the win in their final two games.
And they play New England at home this Sunday.
And then they play Philadelphia the following week.
Well if they can win those two they are going to be the divisional titles.
But everyone is still alive in that AFC eastern division.
Meanwhile Buffalo rolled on again yesterday over Indianapolis.
And again it was Jim Kelly having a fine day as he played behind a great defense.
And here is Kelly firing a touchdown pass to Ronnie Harmon.
Kelly now with a touchdown pass and at least one touchdown pass in eighteen consecutive games.
And here is Kelly once again hitting another former USFL star.
Trumaine Johnson as the Buffalo Bills rolled over Indianapolis twenty seven to three.
Of course it was a week ago they beat Miami twenty seven to nothing.
So they are playing very good defensive football and they are very high on this team.
And we are going to go now to Jim Kelly up in Buffalo.
Jim we apologize for having the phone in your ear.
But we are delighted you are with us.
And first of all you have got things turned around up there.
Let's talk about that defense before we get to the offense.
They have been absolute superb.
They shut out Miami a week ago and then twenty seven to three yesterday.
They sure have. They have come on.
I will tell you what it definitely makes the offense a lot better.
Bruce Smith in the added addition to Cornelius Bennett,
Nabal and Shane Collin to move in the middle has definitely helped.
Not only our defense as a whole but our offense.
It gets us back on the field.
It gives us a lot more plays.
I mean yesterday we ran eighty four plays and I can't remember the last time Buffalo has done that.
Six turnovers and I think it was five sacks by the defensive team.
That was very impressive.
Cornelius Bennett using him much like the with a Lawrence Taylor or Ricky Jackson.
Definitely.
He's so quick from the outside it's hard to just put one offensive guy on him.
I mean you have to even double team him.
But on the other side you have Bruce Smith and of course Fred Smurlis in the middle and Shane Collin.
It's tough.
I'll tell you what our defense is getting a lot better.
And one main thing is they are all very young.
So it looks pretty bright for the Buffalo Bills in the future.
All right.
Let's talk about Jim Kelly having a big year.
Jim another two touchdowns yesterday.
Now you have one touchdown pass and at least one touchdown pass in 18 consecutive games getting a feel of it getting the touch of it.
You've got this team really on the move.
It definitely is.
It definitely feels good.
My receivers have been doing a good job.
Andre Reed Chris Burkett Ronnie Harmon.
I think two out of three are in the top three and receiving the AFC.
Of course we're trying to get that running game going.
Anytime you get that going it enables a passing game to open up and takes a little pressure off the quarterback.
And Ted March brought our offense coordinator has done an unbelievable job with the quarterbacks.
And again Ted Tone our receiver coach he's his first year here has gotten receivers running precise routes of the quarterback needs.
New England coming up.
Your thoughts on New England followed by Philadelphia.
They're tough.
I mean the under tip which is probably leading the league in sacks.
They have a very solid defense.
Last week Steve Grogan had a big game.
So it's going to be definitely a big game not only for the offense but for the defense too.
We're going to have to shut them down.

Well Frank brought you up to date on the rather complicated AFC playoff picture and the possibilities.
The NFC is somewhat simpler in terms of four teams already having clinched playoff spots.
But then it gets somewhat sticky.
But we can simplify it this way.
The playoff prospects Chicago and Washington have already clinched division titles.
So they won't have to worry about playing a wild card game.
If San Francisco wins the Western Division then they of course would advance to the second round.
New Orleans would have to play a wild card game against one of four teams.
Now interestingly St. Louis and Green Bay are still mathematically alive.
But there they are.
If Minnesota wins its final two games against Detroit and Washington it's simple.
The Vikings are in.
But if they lose and let's say the Rams were to tie them Minnesota would still go in.
If Minnesota and the Rams wound up let's say with eight and seven marks.
But if it was a three way tie between Minnesota, Los Angeles and St. Louis the Rams would go in.
If Minnesota and St. Louis were to wind up with eight and seven marks St. Louis would go in.
Green Bay has the scantest of chances but they are still mathematically alive.
But what it boils down to is that Minnesota will control its own destiny with a couple of victories.
Meanwhile we mentioned the Eddie DiBartolo situation.
He offered $6,000 to each of the 49ers if they get into the playoffs as a wild card team.
$10,000 if they get in as division champions didn't sit well with some of the other owners and execs around the league.
I talked to him about it earlier asked him when he first came up with the idea.
Alec goes back to mid-October somewhere around the 18th of October after the strike was settled.
I sat down with Bill Walsh and John McVeigh and just discussed the whole scenario of the strike.
I don't think anybody was happy with it. I know the players weren't. I know the management wasn't throughout the league.
I was afraid of the continuity of our football team. I was afraid of their thinking. I was afraid of bringing them back.
I really wanted to do something and what we did was we put an addendum on their contracts.
Which is an incentive clause which is in numerous NFL contracts.
All it is is basically an incentive clause and I really think that it helped the team.
I think it helped their mental attitude and I think it brought the team together.
We were told by an NFL spokesman today that the matter is under review as they put it by the commissioner.
Was this something that was checked out with the league before you went ahead and issued the addendums?
John McVeigh, our general manager, checked it out with the league office before any letters went out to the players
and before we did put an addendum on their contract.
I was told at the time, so was Coach Walsh, that they had no problem with it.
Were you surprised at some of the reactions that at least have been publicly stated through newspapers and radio and television accounts
by some of the other executives in the league?
Well, I really am because I don't know if it was totally understood at the time.
I did this for my football team and as I said I did it to try and bring some unity back to a very sticky, lousy situation
that neither management nor did the players association.
It was strictly an incentive, an addendum to the contract like Joe Montana's got,
like I'm sure Jim McMahon does and Vinnie Testaverde and a lot of other NFL players.
That's simply what it was.
He's always been known as a players owner and of course he has owned this team for two Super Bowl seasons, 1981 and 1984.
And right now the 49ers appear to be, if not the best team in the National Football League, certainly one of the very best.
Right now they are inspired through the first half to the tune of a 20 to nothing advantage over the Chicago Bears at Candlestick Park.

Bitter cold winds swept through Southern California today pushing city officials to get the homeless off the streets.
Last year several homeless people froze to death here in Los Angeles during the winter months.
To make sure that doesn't happen again, the city and the county have opened recreational centers to provide extra shelters during this extreme cold spell.
