NBC, now more than ever. Concerns me is illegal immigration and how hardworking taxpayers are footing the bill for people who enter this country illegally. As America Speaks, NBC Nightly News listens. Tonight, this psychic painter claims spirits of the great masters speak to him from beyond the grave. Miracle or madness? All new Unsolved Mysteries, NBC Tonight. First critics raved. Then viewers loved it. Now everyone's talking about NBC's fast growing drama. Don't miss Homicide Tonight. Join me for Channel 2 Sports Weekends at 10. This is Channel 2 News at 6. Well good evening everyone. It's the time of year for elk to migrate north and it's likely to be one of the largest migrations of this century. As the elk travel, they can pose severe problems for people driving on highways in northern Arizona. A 19-year-old Indianapolis man is the only survivor of a car accident where a truck hit the body of an elk just this week. The victims have been identified as 20-year-old Jennifer Horstman of Kentucky and 23-year-old Alexander Monk of Oregon, while many accidents involving animals just can't be avoided, others can. Channel 2's Teresa Beer has more. These signs are becoming a familiar sight and in the next few weeks it's especially important for motorists to be on the lookout for elk on the roadways. As they start heading back up north, the likelihood of an accident increases and there are several things drivers can do to stay aware. They need to be absolutely sure that they can see into their headlights and not try to drive faster than their headlights will allow them to. In other words, make sure you maintain good visibility ahead. The other thing is be real careful during the periods right before darkness and right after daylight. That's a time when your vision is not real good and also it's a time when these animals tend to be most active in terms of moving about. If you see an animal, you should slow down. If you see an elk crossing the interstate, keep in mind they usually travel in groups and more may follow. And what if you see an elk at the last minute? And what I try to do is try to maintain my course of travel if I can. It seems like it's almost like two people meeting in a hallway sometimes when they both try to go the wrong direction. Sometimes if you try to evade the animal, the animal will evade right into the path. And I mean the main thing is speed. If you can control the speed and try to slow down, usually the animal will be able to evade you. And of course that's the best scenario when all parties escape injury and can go on their way. Teresa Beerer, Channel 2 News. The Department of Public Safety tells Channel 2 there were 857 animal-related car accidents last year in Arizona. 238 of those fell into the Northern Arizona region. It's also the season for skiing in Northern Arizona and this season could break some records. People at Snow Bowl hope this season breaks the previous record of two years ago, which was 180,063 skiers. This year there have been more than 162,000 visitors to Snow Bowl. Officials say the resort will remain open through April 16th and rates will drop off as of April 1st. A local astronomer has discovered a volcano on Io, one of Jupiter's moons. John Spencer was visiting Hawaii when he made the discovery earlier this month and has been examining the volcanic activity at Anderson Mesa just outside of Flagstaff. He says volcanoes are an important process in studying the solar system. One of the things we're trying to do in astronomy is understand how planets work. Their interiors, their atmospheres, their surfaces, their gravitational effects on each other and volcanoes are a very big part of that picture. Spencer will talk Monday night as part of a series at Lowell Observatory. He says there were so many volcanoes in the Flagstaff area. Studying volcanoes is very relevant. In other news, an inmate at the state prison in Winslow is reportedly fighting for his life tonight. 24-year-old Johnny Hernandez was discovered this morning in his bunk unresponsive due to head injuries. Spokesperson says Hernandez was last seen conscious yesterday but that the apparent attack may have taken place earlier in the week. The spokesperson also says Hernandez would be eligible for an early release next week. Only 24 days before the inevitable deadline for taxpayers and this year your refund may take a little bit longer. The IRS is claiming it's losing more than $5 billion annually in refund fraud. As a result, the IRS double-checking every Social Security number on every return that seeks a refund. That's caused a big problem for taxpayers who file for a rapid refund. Because the IRS is holding back all these checks and what is commonly called a rapid refund is a refund anticipation loan from the banks. But the banks aren't getting the IRS checks so they're not giving out the loans. There are roughly 20 percent fewer returns in Arizona than there were this time last year. One good note though, filing deadline this year is April 17th instead of the 15th. In Los Angeles today, a break in the O.J. Simpson trial gives jurors a long weekend to consider testimony from Cato Kaelin. Tonight Jim Hanchette recaps Kaelin's week on the witness stand. So you didn't tell me about a fight on Christmas Eve, did you? No I'll tell you what. Cato Kaelin under siege from an angry and frustrated Marcia Clark. The question now, will he be friend or foe of the prosecutor when he returns to the witness stand Monday? By the end of the day yesterday, Clark was hinting Kaelin was protecting O.J. Simpson by covering up details of battles between Simpson and his ex-wife. So there's nothing I tried to hide from you about any of the fights. There was so much I had to remember. I had so much time. I was in front of all these people. So then I remember more and that's when we had this meeting. I tell you stuff that I remember something else. Clark's attack on Kaelin's credibility puts her in a tough spot because she also wants the jury to believe his testimony that deflated Simpson's alibi. And what does the jury make of Kaelin? Courtroom observer Jeffrey Tubin. There were people who were really eating him up, who were laughing, who were sort of found him cuddly and adorable. There were others that were looking at him with the coldest eyes and really quite irritated with him. So I think personally he is a mixed bag. And Kaelin, who has veered wildly from being goofy to tearful to confused, will be back for more. Mr. Kaelin, you may step down. You were ordered to return Monday morning, 8.45. Jim Henshaw at NBC News, Los Angeles. Your testimony was very good. Proceedings were interrupted for today so that Judge Ito could spend time with some other cases he's working on. The Flagstaff Police Department is asking for your help in locating a missing man. Frank Winterborn is described as a 39-year-old white male, 5'7", 130 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen Wednesday in East Flagstaff. Now at that time he was wearing black Levi's and a purple jacket with a sheepskin collar. Police say the man suffers from seizures and doesn't have any medication with him. Some Northern Arizona residents are spending time learning about the Postal Service's reclassification, which will likely be in effect within a year. Local business people attended a meeting today which included a live broadcast with Postmaster General Marvin Runyon. The topic was the rearranging of criteria for postal rates from a system based on the contents of a mail piece. Within each one of the classifications that is first, second, third and fourth class mail there are a number of subcategories and so the Postal Service is submitting a proposal to the Postal Rate Commission to revamp that structure if you will to make it much more responsive to the needs of the business mailers to provide some much nicer incentives. The incentives will be for business mailers to pre-barcode their mail for better rates, which would allow the Postal Service to take better advantage of the automation in post offices. But still ahead in tonight's Health Watch Report, a look at how easy and important it can be to learn CPR. And a little later on, if you've got an old tree in your yard, discover some artistic alternatives to firewood. Looks like we have to deal with this very cold weather one more night. Turning to health news, emergency medical crews say learning CPR can be easy for almost everyone. But as Barbara Stewart tells us in tonight's HealthWatch report, it could also mean the difference between life and death. Tonight's HealthWatch is brought to you by Flagstaff Medical Center, Northern Arizona's regional medical center providing you with the quality health care you expect. In an emergency situation, knowing CPR could save a person's life. Emergency crews say in most cases timing is critical and if the technique is administered on the scene it could mean the difference between life and death. It's very important. If we have by standard CPR in progress by the time we get there, that person has a much better chance of survival. Butler says it's important to know CPR because in most cases it's usually performed on family members and friends. He says learning the proper technique is all it takes to become certified and that means learning the method for children and the one for adults. Lucy Nelson knows CPR, with it she helped save a child's life. The paramedics had told myself and the real estate agent that if it wasn't for what we had done, this child would not have made it. The Flagstaff Medical Center offers a free CPR class once a year with the help of the fire department. They say they're hoping to teach more people in the community how to perform this life saving technique. Well, it's very important for people to know CPR. As many people as we can get trained up in CPR, the better chance is we'll have someone on the scene of an emergency or an event that would require CPR. Barbara Stewart, Channel 2 News. The next class will be held April 1st at Flagstaff High School. From 8 to 1 registration is required and is open to those 12 and older. For more information call FMC Special Events at 773-2193. Tom Knight here now with a look at weather, another gorgeous day, a little chilly though. Yeah, TGIF incidentally, just for all of us up here and for the weekend too, because the weekend looks pretty good, even though tonight is going to be kind of cold. But it doesn't look like we have that much chance of snow and it looks like things will be clearing up in time for the weekend and the beginning of next week and then we may have to worry about something else by the middle of next week, but we'll only wait and worry about that next week. I'll tell you about all that after we take a look at our weather shot for this evening from Elroy Borchardt from Grand Canyon. This is sunset over the canyon, absolutely beautiful shot. Thanks a lot Elroy for sending that in and since we used it, a free roll of film and free film processing from the Northern Arizona Smith Food and Drug Centers are yours. In any case, it's partly cloudy right now with a temperature of 36 degrees. Which is still up there from the southwest at 15 barometric pressure 29.75 and falling and the relative humidity is 36 percent. Today's high 39 after a low of 21 for the first time in a while. We're below our normal temperatures. There are the records for today as well. And last night we received 13 hundredths of an inch of precipitation. That takes us to a little over 10 and a half inches for the season. Weather watchers at six o'clock say the skies are clearing up but the winds are still out there. Forty in snowflake, 52 from Robert Ribble in loop, 50 in Camp Verde, 47 in Sedona. And 30 in Grand Canyon by the way, a quarter of an inch from our weather watcher in Flagstaff, a quarter of an inch of precipitation. Latest surface map, low pressure across the Midwestern section of the United States. This is the low that passed through here last night. Behind it there are a few scattered showers and we may see some widely scattered showers this evening. But the big story is the cold air that's going to be hanging around for a while. It's going to be very clear because that high pressure is starting to build in behind it. High pressure is also building for most of the rest of the eastern half of the United States except up in the northeast. They have a few scattered snow showers to deal with. But by tomorrow as this system moves in, cold air will come down from the north, moist air will come up from the gulf. The two are going to collide. Snow for the northern Rockies, some freezing rain right around the Canadian border and heavy rain from border to border ahead of that front. That's where most of the moisture will be. Look for it to stay there over the next couple of days. High pressure in the east and high pressure for most of the west. Another system coming in from the Pacific Northwest but that high should keep it to our north. On Sunday, it looks like we'll have more of the same. More high pressure, the low pressure will continue to move out from the central Great Plains, the north central Great Plains. Freezing rain is going to vanish so there will be enough rain and snow to more than make up for it. But most of the rest of the country will be under highs to the west and highs to the east. Across the state this evening, clearing skies and the winds will start to die down but it's going to be cold. A freeze warning in effect for the central areas and the southeastern section of the state above 3,500 feet. Otherwise, it's going to be mostly clear and there may be a few scattered showers in the north and central areas. Teens, 20s and 30s in the north and central areas for lows and 30s and 40s in the deserts. On to the region to region forecast for the northeast plateau. A slight chance of showers in the northeast section. Otherwise, partly cloudy, winds low in Tuba City, a high of about 47 degrees. For the northwest plateau, mostly sunny and some breezy. Grand Canyon will get to about 40. There is a freeze warning in effect for the central basins above 3,500 feet. Otherwise, partly cloudy and intermittent breezes. The freeze warnings tonight, the partly cloudy skies are for tomorrow. Sedona's high 55 and Cottonwood 57. And this evening along the rim, a chance of snow showers early. Otherwise, it should become clear by early, I mean before midnight and Flagstaff's overnight low 17. To the extended forecast for Flagstaff. Decreasing clouds tomorrow with a high of 39 degrees as that high pressure system continues to build. Somewhat warmer on Sunday, 47 for high. Continue clear on Monday, 49. And then there is a possibility, a statistical possibility of showers and a high of 43. That's the only reason it's in there. I'm not really completely convinced, but it's that time of year that anything could happen. So I'm going to tell you about it anyway. Yeah, you know what they say about statistics. Well, yeah. We'll move on with that one. Thanks, Tom. Coming up, Michael Jordan prepares for his homecoming and Phil Mickelson is perfect. At least on one shot today. Highlights coming up in sports. Who to cheer for? The Wildcats took an early exit and now the Sun Devils are gone. The 1995 season, however, was a high watermark for the Arizona State Sun Devil basketball program. ASU went the deepest into the postseason as any Sun Devil team in the last 20 years. However, top seed Kentucky proved just too much last night in the Sweet 16 at the Southeast Regional. Filling the loss, Mario Bennett announced he'd be back next season. However, speculation continues that ASU's leading scorer will forego his senior year and enter the upcoming NBA draft. Bill Frieder calls ASU's Sweet 16 very rewarding even though they were no match for Kentucky. Banning is oppressing like we do is when you meet a great basketball team, they'll just pick a press apart and make you pay for it and that's what Kentucky did tonight. Who to root for? The Wildcats, you can try Wake Forest or Oklahoma State. They're in the East Regional at East Rutherford, New Jersey right now. Oklahoma State with the early lead. Tulsa and Massachusetts to follow and at the Midwest Regional right now defending champion Arkansas with the early lead on Memphis, Kansas and Virginia to follow that ball game. Phoenix Suns coach Paul Westfall is considering another lineup change which would be the 22nd of the season for the Suns when they tip off tonight against the Houston Rockets. Elliott Perry could be in the lineup for Wesley Person. The Suns also expect Waymond Tisdale back in action tonight after missing five games with a strained rib cage. The Rockets come to town with a 40 and 26 record tip off at 7 o'clock at the Purple Palace. Meanwhile, Chicago will be rocking later tonight. They're bracing for Michael Jordan's homecoming. The United Center hosts the Orlando Magic and the Bulls tonight. Michael Jordan playing his first home game since his comeback. It will be his first game ever at the new United Center. The Bulls will have their work cut out for them or the Orlando Magic bring the NBA's best record to town. The Arizona Cardinals struck out another free agent wide receiver today. Second round action today, the TPC at Sawgrass, Ponce Vedra, Florida. Phil Mickelson on the 13th hole, 192 yards out. A 7-iron in his hand. The Southpaw hits the fringe. The ball then rolling, rolling, rolling. Raw hide. This one, yes a hole in one for Phil Mickelson. Six under par, the high score today. He is even for the tournament. The crowd on its feet even gets a congratulations from the shark Greg Norman. Corey Pavin with the birdie putt though coming up is tied with Gene Sowers for the lead at five under par. Further south in Florida, tennis action, no sports illustrated jinx for Andre Agassi. Agassi against Magnus Larsen in the semifinals, the hot serve enough to break the strings of Andre's racket. He needed three sets to advance in today's semifinal action, 7-5, 4-6 and 7-6 over Magnus Larsen. He will meet the winner of the Pete Sampras, Jonas Bjorkman match coming up later tonight in the finals on Sunday. And some lumberjack tennis, any women's team losers today down at Grand Canyon University to Drake University. The lone winner on the singles side for any Ricky Broadbent, all the other NAU players dropped out in singles action and they didn't even bother to play any doubles and any women's team back in action tomorrow against Washington State. Of course, Sun's highlights tonight with Michael Jordan and some NCAA action at 10. Oh, what a golf shot. Yes. Just once, maybe just once in my life. Thanks, Paul. You might want to be extra alert when passing Jack Walters place. Have you caused any accidents? Not yet, but near accidents, people do slow down on occasion. And they get haunted. It all started when Jack partially cut down a dying maple tree in front of his house. My wife come out and says, well, what are you going to do with it now? I said, just jokingly, I said, I think I'll make a pencil out of it. That was no joke. Jack is a retired painter with too much free time on his hands. Then my granddaughter, Brianna Kellum, suggested I make a crayon out of it. So she helped me do that. Next his grandson helped ring in the holidays with a snowman and for St. Patrick's Day, a leprechaun. I hope it's a bunny next. That's one of Jack's neighbors. He has many of them who say great. So is there anyone who doesn't see eye to eye with Jack Stump? On the contrary, Jack receives numerous positive letters like these. For instance, this one's from the Brown family and it says, I just wanted to let you know how much my family enjoys your tree. We look forward to it each time we drive by your house. My neighbor ever did that. I'd break his neck. You can have it if you dig it out roots and all. John Pertsborne for Channel 2 News. Yeah, I wonder what he does at Christmas.
