In the news, the Laredo Police Officers Association may ask for the resignation of District Attorney Julio Garcia. And a local doctor says there's a danger of contracting the AIDS virus from Nuevo Laredo prostitutes. In sports, Astros Ace Mike Scott wins his Cy Young Award and you won't want to miss part one of our exclusive series on Laredo sports gambling. And in weather, bundle up, it's going to stay cold all week long. Episode 32 of Laredo's top rated newscast is next. Good evening, I'm Randy Kent. And I'm Dot Pedersen. Laredo and the nation pause today to honor and remember the sacrifices made by America's military veterans. In Laredo, a solemn crowd gathered this morning near the Veterans Memorial at Jarvis Plaza for a ceremony honoring the men and women who have protected our nation and our freedom. Retired Marine Corps Colonel Dr. Gil Trevino officiated at the event, which was attended by representatives of several veterans organizations. Some veterans we talked with believe servicemen don't get the respect they deserve. Congress should look into the situation and help out the veterans and people that are also serving right now in the service. They should be getting more education, a better way of life when they get out. Those are very important to us. And Navado asked Laredo's youth to appreciate the sacrifice war veterans have made to ensure a bright future for all Americans. Inside sources have told eyewitness news that the Laredo Police Officers Association plans to ask District Attorney Julio Garcia to resign. Their request will likely come at a news conference scheduled for tomorrow morning. Association past president, L.C. Castillo, would neither confirm nor deny the report, but Castillo says he personally believes Garcia should step down. I think most members are totally discontent. There's been a tremendous loss of confidence in the district attorney himself, not in his staff but the D.A. himself. And we just feel that his prosecution is totally inadequate and will not serve the best interests of criminal justice in the community. District Attorney Garcia has been criticized recently after a state appeals court reversed the manslaughter conviction of Enrique Red Garcia for the death of police officer Victor Serna. Webb County is considering housing juveniles who get into trouble with the law at the Corrections Corporation of America facility on Highway 59. Commissioners toured the detention center today and most were impressed with the way the center is run. The county must find a place to house young offenders now that the juvenile detention center has been shut down. Commissioners are considering renovating the old jail into a juvenile center or possibly building a brand new juvenile lockup. The man says that they needed to be guaranteed $172,000 a year which would enable them to build or add another section to this institution and that will house our juveniles. I mean if we're going to spend $1.2 million in building and running the new facilities, why not do it here? Rodriguez says the county hopes to reach a decision by the end of the year because juveniles arrested now are being shipped off and detained in San Antonio or Corpus Christi. Two Loreto men are in jail tonight after police arrested them for attempted murder. The suspects were picked up at an apartment they were hiding in in the 2400 block of Mercer. 19 year old Jesus Gomez and 22 year old Sergio Linares were wanted in connection with a shooting that took place last week outside a convenience store on Guadalupe Street. No one was hurt in the incident but police say Loreto and Jerry Vela was shot at as he was putting gas in his car. Gomez and Linares each are jailed on $50,000 bonds. Loreto border patrol agents confiscated 142 pounds of marijuana this morning after stopping a Florida man on a routine traffic check near Hebronville. Agents noticed the man's pickup truck had a fresh paint job and further inspection revealed a false bottom and $113,600 in pot. 33 year old Lawrence Mason Taylor of Fort Myers Florida was arrested and turned over to drug enforcement authorities. An aid to state senate candidate Benny Bach told eyewitness news today the republicans still plans to call for a recount if he can raise enough money. Bach lost the district 21 race to Judith Zafferini but the Bach campaign reported numerous voting irregularities throughout the district. Bach reportedly has raised about half of the $25,000 he'll need for a recount. The deadline for finding a recount petition comes after December 3rd when the state canvases votes from the election. But a spokesman for Bach says a decision on the recount will be made far in advance of that deadline. Well tomorrow is Zapata County Public Information Day. It's a time when you can find out about public and private community services in that area. Activities will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Zapata Civic Center and continue until 4 p.m. Among the groups making presentations will be Mercy Hospital Emergency Services, Upjohn Healthcare Service and the American Association of Retired Persons. Anyone who attends also can take advantage of free blood pressure screening. Again the information day gets underway at 10 a.m. at the Zapata Civic Center and runs until 4 p.m. Well if you've ever lived in or visited a small town you've probably picked up a copy of the local newspaper. That's where you find a wealth of information about the townspeople and the lives they lead. With this in mind Greg Grugin traveled south and found a newspaper regarded as the eyes, ears and voice of Zapata. Up until four years ago the community of Zapata didn't have a newspaper or for that matter any source of local information other than word of mouth. A small town of eight to ten thousand people is too big for gossip to work and too small for any other kind of news to work and the small town people fills the bill. Former Laredo Times editor Bob McVeigh has owned and published the Zapata County News for the last two years. Together with his wife, mother-in-law and five other employees McVeigh churns out two issues a week. McVeigh left much larger papers to ply his trade in Zapata because... On a daily you get really wound up in the grind of producing the news each day and you lose sight of the goal of a newspaper and the goal of a newspaper is to improve the community it lives in, make it a better place to live and by being a source of information tie the community together. Although the paper is actually printed in Laredo everything from layout to photo developing is done in Zapata. McVeigh's operation may be small but it's certainly not primitive. He uses computers for everything from bookkeeping to laser graphics. News editor Alice Huff likes the opportunity to report on a wide range of subjects from county government to high school football. People down here read every word of the newspaper. I'm literally every word. Huff is largely responsible for the informal tone of the paper which she says reflects the many personal relationships which bind the community together. We have a lot of winter Texans here, older people, senior citizens that have seen all the hard news or bad news that they care to read about and they like something with a little lighter touch to it. But sometimes being close to your readers can have its disadvantages. That we know the people and sometimes that's tough. If you know somebody well, if you drink coffee with them, if you go to parties with them and then you have to do a story that makes them look bad, that's very, very hard. Our business is to do the stories, to report the truth and let the chips fall where they may. McVeigh says he'll sell about 2,000 copies of this paper and the people who buy them, well if they're not in here they know just about everybody who is. Greg Gruegg and Laredo, Eyewitness News. Nice little town and a nice little paper. Yeah, important to have a newspaper in your town. Well when Eyewitness News returns, a local doctor warns AIDS can be contracted in Boys Town. And that's the way they hide you out in their At NBCBanks, confidence is one of our most important assets. Laredowans who visit the Red Light District across the border are at risk of being exposed to the AIDS virus. That's according to a doctor with the Laredow-Web County Health Department. Dr. Gérard Kost says AIDS is no longer considered a homosexual disease and that the virus is often spread by prostitutes. Kost says individuals should learn to practice safe sex and educate children as early as sixth grade about AIDS. Kost says the latest breakthrough in AIDS treatment is a drug being tested now. AZT, azetophtymidine, which may slow down the growth of the virus. It may. It is an experimental drug and it is right now being tested. Kost says Laredowans will have to brace themselves for the worst since it's possible a child with AIDS may someday enter a Laredo school. Well the cold and flu season is here and fever is one of the many symptoms that affect children. Brenda Blake reports a fever should be watched carefully, especially in young children and infants. When your child isn't eating, has no interest in playing and feels warm to the touch, he may be coming down with a fever. Fevers can be dangerous and need to be monitored carefully. That's why it's important to keep thermometers on hand, rectal for kids under three and oral thermometers for older children. High fevers in children usually is an indication of a serious infection or illness. Also, seizures can develop for certain children who have high fever. In older children, a temperature of 101 degrees or higher is cause for concern. But if your child is less than a year old with a temperature over 100.4 degrees, check with your doctor because complications can develop quickly. Once the fever is high, you can sponge off the child with lukewarm water to cool him down. Don't bundle him up in a pile of blankets. As a general rule, it's better not to have a child bundled up. The body is reading itself of heat and the heat that the blanket keeps in is making the fever even higher. Children with fever won't have much of an appetite so don't force them to eat. Do make sure they rest and drink plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration. Doctors warn that children with chicken pox or flu-like symptoms should not use aspirin but should use an aspirin substitute. The use of aspirin in those cases has been linked to Rye's syndrome, a potentially fatal disease. From Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, I'm Brenda Blake. Boy I tell you Mike Scott what a season, what a pitcher. He can only get better. Houston Astros pitcher Mike Scott indeed got his just reward today when the split fingered strikeout artist was awarded this year's National League Cy Young Award. Scott edged LA's Fernando Valenzuela in the balloting. Well I knew I really didn't have much to do with the award after I stopped pitching so I really didn't lose any sleep over it. I knew I didn't have any control so I just waited to hear the call and hopefully he would say what I wanted to hear this morning. Well without a doubt I think it had to be the no hitter at the end of the year. I think that so many things were on the line right then and we knew we were going to win the pennant. We knew we had ten games to do it but to tell the no hitter that moment right there is probably the most excited I've ever been and I'll probably remember that longer than anything. Maybe this too but this isn't a deal where you just… The star right hander led the majors in both strikeouts and ERA while helping Houston clinch the National League West pennant with 18 wins. Now Laredo Mayor Aldo Tetangelo is as busy as the next guy but when it comes to Teco's baseball, hold the phone. West Martin Field was the site last night for the Teco's 87 kickoff season ticket drive. Last year's season ticket holders were among the guests at honor at a casual barbecue and sign up drive and the smile on the face of this man says it all. We are moving and this Sylvia is the bat and we're going to go and we're going to win in 1987. The spirit is here now. Zacateo Guerrero is the Teco's new manager but he's still waiting on the complete schedule for next summer. Well less than 30 hours after asking for the resignation of Nixon head football coach Gene Sharp, LISD Athletic Director, Arnulfo Zam-Samora told Eye Witness Sports that Sharp's job was in jeopardy as early as last spring. Zam-Samora said the Mustangs 2, 7 and 1 record this past season was disappointing but added that Sharp's performance was weak last year too. Sharp was unavailable for comment today but he told Eye Witness Sports last night that he knows his job is in limbo. Zam-Samora claimed all LISD coaches are evaluated after each sports season but Sharp says he is unaware of these alleged evaluations. Zam-Samora promised to go public tomorrow with his opinion on Sharp's performance. Meanwhile Sharp says politics are involved. Well Americans will wager more than 50 billion dollars on professional football games this year so how much gambling of a similar nature takes place right here in Laredo? Eye Witness Sports producer Thor Tolo found the answers varied and vague in the first of his exclusive two part series. District Attorney Julio Garcia claims only minor gambling operations exist in Webb County but at least one Department of Public Safety official believes that estimate is incredibly conservative. It's unbelievable how much money you're talking about on every kind of sporting event. I mean we're talking about horse racing, dog racing. The DA's chief investigator O.J. Hale is investigating two current gambling operations but the DA feels uncomfortable spending thousands of taxpayers' dollars on what he calls a victimless crime. Our attitude is as far as gambling is concerned of course we're talking about prosecuting the particular individual involved but at the same time primarily running him out of business if we can and that comes to a forfeiture and seizure of the equipment that he's using. Police Chief Victor Garcia is aware of Laredoans who make their living off others' misfortune but good bookies wear poker faces and they know where to hide. I mean we do have some, we have heard of some. We really haven't pursued to a great extent because we really don't know who they are and nobody has really complained. You know they've been ripped off. And normally this is how things have come to our attention. These photos of a recent dog fight near Laredo were confiscated from the defendants by DPS officials and the picture they paint isn't pretty. Most dog fights are on Saturday or Sunday usually late in the afternoon and most of the time on a ranch top area with some kind of enclosed building. Four of Laredo's reputed bookies refuse to talk with us despite our assurances of anonymity. Now gambling investigators are every bit as low key and thus unable to go on camera but Dexter Simpson of the Dallas Vice Squad told Eyewitness Sports that gambling investigations often take years to unfold into court convictions. You know you have to actually go in and infiltrate these particular gambling operations. You can't just take anybody's word for it. You know in order to file a gambling case the investigator has to have first hand knowledge of it. With murder cases outnumbering gambling investigations 13 to 2, the DA's docket is understandably prioritized. I don't know that it has reached the general public as a problem yet and the reason for that is because we don't have very many formal complaints that flow through this office complaining of gambling or gambling promotion and our possession of gambling material. It is a problem but again nobody complains about it. We take it on a case by case basis. When somebody complains we will pursue it to the fullest extent of the law. But gambling sentences are traditionally soft which bothers some and challenges others. We're going to do our job whether the court system does theirs or not. Thor Tolo, Laredo Eyewitness Sports. You know truly a fascinating phenomenon tomorrow in part two we're going to look into why people gamble. Alright sounds good. Thank you Les. Thanks Les. Weather is next. Value pack. I walked outside this morning with a short sleeve shirt on and immediately walked right back inside. It was cold. I know grabbed your jacket too. Yeah. That's right. I walked drastically down once the cold front moved in and it moved in pretty much earlier this morning. You know I'll take a look at our highs and lows for today and today's high was actually at midnight tonight. Well let's first see who our color the weather winner was for today. And the winner today Elizabeth Rodriguez will receive a happy meal from McDonald's. And it's not really kind of the thing that you see in Laredo but it was a pretty nice picture anyway of this lighthouse and a pretty nice lake. Let's take a look now at the temperatures in Laredo right now under cloudy skies it's only 50 degrees. The humidity at 86 percent winds up from the northwest at 15. The barometer steady and we just had a trace of precipitation throughout the day in Sabata. They had a little bit more fifteen hundredths of an inch pretty much all day long. The temperature out there right now is 49 degrees. They also have cloudy skies and the humidity way up there at 93 percent winds up from the northwest pretty gusty at 15 miles an hour and the barometer is just edging up ever so slightly. Now let's take a look at the highs and lows. Like I said today's highs have are no indication of what the temperatures have been pretty much this afternoon. Today's high reportedly 71 degrees as I said that occurred at midnight. Now Bob Heath in Sabata told us his high for today at 72 degrees was at about five o'clock this morning. Now the low for today is actually you'll notice our current temperature 50 degrees. The same thing with Sabata the current temperature there 49 is also the low so far this afternoon. Now let's take a look at the satellite map of Texas. Mostly cloudy skies prevail in the state and we do have a little bit of precipitation but unlike yesterday today's temperatures are more consistent between the 40s and 50s. As you'll remember yesterday at this time it was only 22 degrees in Amarillo. That was just as the cold front was passing on down. The front pretty much started earlier yesterday afternoon in the northern section of Texas and throughout most of the afternoon passed on through the state and early this morning was in Laredo which drastically dropped our temperatures and caused a lot of wind. Now we've also seen quite a bit of rainfall in parts of Brownsville three and a half inches so far this afternoon over there. Now let's talk a little more about the temperatures and today's highs in the state only in the 40s and 50s pretty much statewide. We did only have a few 30s around Dalhart in the extreme northern section of the state. Now it's 87 degrees in Jacksonville Florida for the past five days. Temperatures have been unseasonably warm while meanwhile over in the northern United States temperatures are unseasonably cold. Today's highs not even getting up to 10 degrees. Pretty chilly over there. We have a lot of snowfall in parts of Laramie Wyoming and other sections of the western section of Wyoming. Up to 12 inches of snowfall over there. Meanwhile over in parts of the northeast three inches in Binghamton New York also three inches for Hartford Connecticut here now as they forecast for the nation tomorrow. More rain and precipitation around most of Texas along parts of the Gulf Coast and for Laredo this is what we're going to be expecting. Tonight it's going to be kind of cloudy and very cold with the lows dropping down to about 43 degrees. Tomorrow morning temperatures should only get up to about 45 with a 30 percent chance of light rain or drizzle. In the afternoon the highs getting up to about 53 just like today and then for tomorrow evening lows near 45. Golly it's winter here. This is the coldest that we've seen in Laredo. In the town of Scanny Adels, New York this past weekend, there was a road race with a bit more huffing and puffing than usual. That's because one requirement for entry was that all male runners have a waistline at least four and a half inches larger than their pants in scene. The rules for the three mile race were stretched a bit in deference to the runners' delicate conditions. Competitors were allowed to take shortcuts and hitch rides to the finish line. The reward for finishing the race was a feast of beer and Twinkies. This has to put back on all those calories you burned off. The calories you burn off riding in the car in the finish line. Edna Gardner White started flying when nice girls didn't, 1926. Today in her eighties, she still does and operates her own airport in Texas. Evelyn Waldron learned to fly and a World War I Jenny was an instructor for American Airmen in World War II and is still at it at 72. Now these are women you ought to know.
