There's nothing in this case that that little girl could have done differently. She didn't do anything wrong. Now at 11, a girl is recovering after being attacked by a cougar in eastern Washington. I'm Christine Pei. We hear what you can do to protect yourself if you ever encounter a cougar. Plus, Mike Everett is in the Weather Center with your forecast. Mike? I am indeed. And even though it has been a cool and wet weekend, we're starting to track some clearing, drying, and warming. I'll give you the details on when you can expect the warmest day of the year so far coming up. This is my 14th season as a ticket holder and this is one of the happiest places I love to be. Seattle Storm fans are standouts pushing game attendance far above any other WNBA team. You're watching KING 5 News. Tonight a 9-year-old girl is recovering from a cougar attack over the weekend. It happened in Stevens County in eastern Washington. Washington Fish and Wildlife is now studying the animal that was killed. Tonight they explain what to do if you ever encounter a wild cat. The little girl was playing and it happened so fast where the cat just attacked her. Stacey Lehman, spokesperson for the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, says the attack happened near a kids' camp in Fruitland, north of Spokane. Fish and Wildlife says the big cat has been killed. We are preparing, setting up testing for the cougar's carcass and then just monitoring the condition of the little girl. Lehman emphasizes attacks like this are extremely rare. It's unknown what led the cougar to attack the girl. There's nothing in this case that that little girl could have done differently. She didn't do anything wrong. With more people equipped with security cameras, wildlife sightings are more common. A camera captured video of a cougar prowling near a home in Olympia earlier this month. The state says this is the time of year when cougars are on the prowl. Four years ago, also in May, a cougar attacked two cyclists near a trail in North Bend. One of the cyclists died. Again, it's rare. Fish and Wildlife says 19 people were injured by a cougar attack in the last 100 years. Two of those were deadly. Nine times out of ten, that animal doesn't want to be any closer to you than you want to be to it, so it's going to take off the other direction. But if you do see one, she says to back away and give the cat space. If it comes toward you, make yourself look as big as possible and be loud. Yell at it. If it continues to move towards you, throw anything you have at it. If you have a water bottle, if you have a rock, you can pick up rocks and throw at it. And if the cat does attack, officials say you need to act. Important thing to do is to fight back. With cougars, we don't recommend that you play dead. You need to fight back. And more tips on what to do if you see a cougar. Text the word cougar to 206-448-4545 and we'll send them to you. Turning to weather now. People will be on the move tomorrow for Memorial Day. So what kind of weather should they expect? Let's check in with King Five's Chief Neurologist Mike Elritte. Hi there. And one word better. We're going to be seeking conditions that will be improving and that is worth some applause. You know, today was a very cool day. In fact, as we take a look at what happened out towards SeaTac temperatures were 13 degrees below average today. Fifty six was our official high, 48 in the overnights, and we picked up close to a quarter of an inch of rain. So in case you've been playing along at home, we have now moved into second place for the wettest May on record at SeaTac, almost four inches of accumulated rain during the month. I don't think we're going to catch up to 1948. In fact, we've just got a couple days of May left and it would take about another inch of rain and I don't see that happening. Just in case you're wondering, and I'm still on a statistics roll here, if you've been wondering how many days below 60 degrees we've had so far, it's 16, but that's not the record. There have been 20 days in 1945 and 1962 and 18 days in 1953, 1955 and 1999. Still it's been pretty chilly out there. Over the next 12 hours, we're going to touch down in the upper forties. We're going to get rid of that rain and we're going to start to clear, dry and warm details straight ahead. All right, Mike, and here is a live look at the Seattle waterfront this evening. What a pretty picture of ferry just now arriving. In fact, it's a busy travel day, expecting tomorrow, the final day of the holiday weekend. Earlier today, cars were backed up for more than a mile for riders waiting to take the Muccalteo Clinton Ferry. State says the public address system was not working on one of two ferries. They got the problem fixed and the ferry was back in service by midday. Ferry riders took it all in stride. You never catch the first ferry. You always have to wait at least one, especially on weekends and holiday weekends. You better bring your patients with you. Tomorrow, the eight a.m. sailing from Port Townsend and 845 sailing from Coupeville are canceled due to tidal currents. You can sign up for ferry alerts for any information on cancellations. The president and first lady visited Uvalde, Texas today. They placed flowers at the memorial for the 19 children and two teachers who were shot to death at an elementary school. Cole Higgins reports and has more on an emotional day in the South Texas town. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden arriving in Uvalde, Texas Sunday. First visiting Robb Elementary School, laying flowers at the memorial. Biden acting as consular in chief, embracing the school's principal. Before walking along the row of memorial wreaths from picture to picture of each of the 19 children and two teachers, 21 people in total who were gunned down inside the school. I'm all for the president coming here. I think he's got a good heart. He knows what it is to lose children at a young age. Texas Governor Greg Abbott also stopping by the memorial and onlooker issuing a plea. I hope that some politicians see this and try to meet in the middle and work together. In the wake of the horrific Uvalde shooting, some bipartisan voices in Congress are talking about gun reform. And I can't say for certain, but I can tell you I sense a different feeling among my colleagues after Uvalde. There are people taking these guns, these ARs under the age of 21. Can we stop all of it? No. Can we mitigate it? Certainly. And we should be doing that now. Collegans King 5 News. The U.S. Department of Justice is taking a closer look at the police response to the shooting. It will conduct a critical incident review at the request of Uvalde's mayor. The DOJ says it wants to identify lessons learned and best practices. If you want to help those grieving in Uvalde, you can also text the word HELP to 206-448-4545 and we'll send you a link to resources. In reaction to the shooting in Texas, the Seattle Sounders head coach spoke out after tonight's match. There's too many people out there that have too many excuses about not wanting to do something. And there's so many common sense reasons why background checks should be made in this country. And I blame the people, the politicians, because they should really get off their ass and do something about it. Brian Schmetzer, who you just see right here, says, quote, it's really, really critical that we address the issue. And the Mariners and other Seattle professional sports teams are using their platforms as well to try to make a change in the aftermath of the Texas shooting. King 5's Brady Wakayama reports. Play ball are two words that you hear at every baseball field across the country. But at T-Mobile Park, there are three words the Seattle Mariners want to emphasize. Saying that we don't want gun violence and we don't want to have elementary schoolers getting shot in school is not terribly controversial. And gun violence can be seen on all of the Mariners' social media pages. The team made the change just a day after the Uvalde, Texas shooting. I'm really proud to see a team that I support and love so much taking a stance to end gun violence. It's something that this country needs. So everyone can see that, hey, they support ending gun violence. That's a good thing that the Mariners are doing. Despite many fans in support of the team's message, there are fans I spoke with off camera who say they don't want their sports teams to get into politics. We're not looking to have a political statement, but we are looking to elevate the conversation and bring people awareness of what's going on and helping people figure out how to take action. Griggs says the team has highlighted gun-related statistics during games and showcased four groups against gun violence. And the Mariners aren't the only team speaking up. The Seattle Sounders and the OL Reign, along with several other professional teams, are pleading for change, too. Raise the conversation and stop even one family from feeling what all of those families in Texas have felt and all of those families in Buffalo felt. It's worth our time. In Seattle, Brady Wakayama, KING5 News. The Seattle storm now in an arena with plenty of room to grow. We'll explain how the team is seeing an attendance boom coming up. And a live look at Everett and Seattle right now. Mike Everett returns with a look at the forecast, which may include warmer temperatures ahead. And the Seattle Sounders stage the comeback tonight with the highlights coming up in sports. When weather turns nasty, the Northwest knows you look for the yellow jackets. The rain has not let up. That is according to attendance data. As King 5's Callie Greenberg explains, the team still has room to grow. The Seattle Storm are now playing in the brand new Climate Pledge Arena. It has plenty of room for old fans as well as new ones. In fact, data is showing attendance is five times higher than last season. What happens on the court brings an energy that has Zane Girard saying this about the Seattle Storm. This is one of the happiest places I love to be. She's had season tickets for the women's professional team for 14 seasons. I wanted to invest and show my support for the team because I believe in the team. She's a super fan. Every play matters. Every possession matters. And while Zane says she never misses a game, that's not the case for her friend Kirsten. It's great to be able to share it with a friend. This is her first game here tonight. Yup. Won't be my last. Attendance data for the Seattle Storm shows that there are a lot of people like Kirsten, first time visitors. In fact, across the timeline, a website that analyzes women's basketball stats says the Storm has the highest attendance in the WNBA by a long shot, averaging more than 10,500 fans per day. It's like people are apt to be here. And I think I kind of maybe want to be a part of that journey and story. For comparison, the 2021 season, which was played in Everett and impacted by the pandemic, averaged less than 3000 fans. I think more people should come out and check out women's basketball because it's awesome and exciting and lots of fast paced action. New to Seattle. This is also Regan's first game. I'm also new to being a basketball fan. So, but I feel like this this storm introduction to that as a longtime fan, Zane says this is a tradition she's happy to share. This represents so many of the values about the WNBA, about women's sports, about Seattle that I just love. Dedication to a team now in a venue with lots of room to grow. There's just nothing more inspiring just to watch great women and their athletic talent and prowess be on the court all season long. Callie Greenberg, KING5 News. Tomorrow Memorial Day is a time to honor members of the military who died serving their country. Events are happening around Western Washington. Take a look. There will be a service of remembrance in Lynwood that starts at 11 a.m. at Floral Hills Cemetery. This one is open to the public. In Stanwood, the annual commemoration of Memorial Day will start at 11 a.m. at Anderson Cemetery. And in Auburn, the annual Memorial Day service starts at 10 a.m. at Auburn Mountain View Cemetery in the Memorial Flag Plaza. So Mike, there are going to be several events. I'm hoping the weather will be a little bit better tomorrow than what we saw for the past couple days. Hi there. So I've been watching it very closely, obviously, because there is so much going on tomorrow and I'm really pleased with what the latest forecast model runs are showing me. I'll show you in just a moment. I want to start right here. Temperatures in the upper forties and lower fifties. And as we were discussing earlier, that cloud deck that's in place right now is pretty much going to keep us here overnight tonight. So not expecting a particularly cool night, but we will continue to see some of that rain courtesy of that convergence. It's been sitting basically between Everett and Tacoma through most of the day. But watch what happens overnight here. We're going to see that one final blast that we were talking about. The low pressure system that's been basically parked right about here throughout the day today takes a dive down towards the south and east and as it's leaving, it's going to send one more plume of moisture back our way from the east. So expecting to see some snow fire up near Stevens Pass, not expecting any accumulations or any problems whatsoever for travelers. But it will continue to push some rain up towards Mount Vernon. By the time we get to about two o'clock in the afternoon, though, it looks like a lot of that starts to calm down. Just seeing some light showers up towards the mountains. The I-5 corridor is looking good. It's looking good out towards the coast as well. We will have some rain that will try to push you through Snoqualmie Pass, but you're seeing some really light colors there that indicates it's going to be more showery than rainy. Fast forward to about six p.m. We've got a little bit of cleanup to do up towards Gadget and Whatcom counties, and then we're going to get that rain out of here and we're going to start to see those skies clear. We're going to talk about the potential for a meteor shower coming up in just a little bit here, but it looks like there is some potential, especially down towards the south. It looks like those skies could clear. So if it happens, you may actually see it moving forward to Tuesday. Over there, we'll see some showers that will continue to hang out over the mountains, but seeing some clearer skies and some warmer temperatures, especially across Puget Sound and out towards the coast. We saw that it's no potential. And again, it looks like it's just going to be the central and possibly portions of the northern Cascades way up high. We're talking about fifty five hundred feet. But again, building snowpack this time of year is a fantastic thing to do. Overnight lows tonight. It looks like most of us will settle just a couple of degrees lower than we are right now in the mid to upper forties. Looks like we'll get forty eight Seattle. It'll be forty eight out towards Hope Queen as well. And since we're collecting forty eight, it looks like we've got them in Everett, no Carver as well. We wish you a safe and happy and memorable Memorial Day tomorrow. Make sure you get out and enjoy yourself and do it safely. Seven day forecast shows us touching down in the upper forties overnight tonight. Sixty on Monday, still well below average. But take a look at Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We're heading into the seventies and we're staying there for the entire work week. Fantastic. And when you're away from your TV, you can always find the forecast at your fingertips on your smartphone. Just download our King five app and Google Play or the Apple App Store. Time now for sports. Here's Jay Garcia. Thanks, Christine. On the whole, it was a pretty good day for Seattle sports. Sounders win, Storm win, rain win, Mariners. They tried their best. Plus a wild night on the fast track. More stories and more straight ahead in sports. People come to us and they think that they're the only one having this problem. And it seems like we're usually the last resort. They've tried to write letters. They've tried to call a legislator. Nothing works. They call the King five investigators. Busy day at the Soto District between the Mariners, Reign, and Sounders all at home. We start with the nightcap where the Sounders were playing their last game before a two-week break trying to inch and claw their way closer to a playoff spot against a Charlotte team that's been great at home but awful on the road. Not the way Seattle wanted to start this one out. Seventieth minute, Charlotte on the free kick. It goes off the post and right to the foot of Benjamin Bender. No need to Bender that one. He had four Sounders defenders just looking right at him. Charlotte strikes first. Second half, 71st minute. Alex rolled on to the streaking Jordan Morris. Third goal of the season for Morris. Let's run it back for a second look. We go rolled on. Morris tie game. Eight minutes later, check this sequence out. Raul Rueda has left all alone on a free kick. His first strike gets blocked but he gets his own rebound and then circles around the defense and unleashes this rocket. Right side of the goal. So from down one nothing late in the second half, Seattle channels the weather today and storms back. Rueda has with his fourth of the season and don't lose now but the Sounders just two points out of a playoff spot. We had a lot of good chances so we knew that if we kept going we were going to score some goals and it's just the mentality of this team to never give up and it was a big win at home. It was again not a must win game but kind of a must win game if we wanted to really consider ourselves contenders for you know playoff positioning. Same venue earlier on in the day. NWSL action between the rain and first place San Diego Wave FC. Before the game a moment of silence held for the victims of the mass shooting this week in Uvalde Texas. Mission minimal until the 74th minute the rain with the free kick and Sophia to Rose LaValle roses blossom in the rain and that's the game winner rain over the wave 1 0 to stay unbeaten at home. Second annual Battle of the Brands high school football showcase game today in Puyallup. Some of the top recruits on the West Coast going at it for Ford Sports Performance and Air Academy. One of those recruits is Andre Jordan. You see him right here. Three star prospect from Federal Way. He returns a punt the other way for a touchdown. Little bit later his high school teammate Rashawn Clark. He does the same on a kickoff. The four star recruit leads FSP to the win 21 to 10. Well the Mariners came into the day looking for just their second series sweep of the season. They hadn't had one since Jesse Winker did this a walk off against the Royals in late April. Since that moment the M's are 12 games under 500 but a chance to sweep the first place Astros today. Perhaps the ultimate confidence booster. Marco Gonzalez Day got off to a rocky start. 88 mile an hour fastball right down the middle and Jeremy Pena does not miss it. Rides the jet stream out to right. His eighth of the year Astros strike first and the second it's 1-0. Score would say that way until the six. Ty France doing what his name says he does and tying the game. France with the career best 11 game hitting streak. He's hitting 342 on the season. Could the Mariners bullpen flip the script though and keep it tied? Bases loaded two outs Paul Seewald in a jam and Jordan Alvarez probably not the guy you want to see at the plate there. He goes the other way. Aledmus Diaz scores Astros back in front. Mariners create some traffic of their own. Bottom nine bases loaded one out but fans 5-4-3 yourself to the exit. A double play ends the game and the Astros avoid the sweep. Manager Scott Service though still pleased with the weekend performance. I thought we played an outstanding series. That was the most complete series we've played since very, very early in the season. So a lot of positives there. I'm really happy with the way we bounced back after a rough start to this home stand. Playing the way we did. If we continue to do that we'll be fine. All right WNBA action. The storm came into today's game against the Liberty shooting a lead worse 39%. They improved in a big way. They go 13 of 24 from long range. Jewel Lloyd leads all scores with 22 points. Jontel Lavender with 12 points and 10 rebounds. First Seattle double double of the season. Brianna Stewart with 14 of her own. A 26 halftime lead turns into a 31 point win. 92-61 the final. I think that we just came out and knew that we should run the floor a lot because they don't have a super, super deep bench there, a new team. I think that was a point of emphasis. We come out and just put our foot on their neck just so that we can grow as a team. I think we did a great job. We did a great job. Celtics in heat. Game seven of the Eastern Conference finals. Miami storms back from a double digit deficit. That's Max Struess with an off balance three to make it a two point game. He could have stopped on the next Celtics possession. Jimmy Butler going for the lead but is short. Heat fall in this one. Celtics to their 22nd NBA finals. Game one against the Warriors coming on Thursday. To Indy for the 500. Marcus Erickson has a huge lead with four laps to go. Only for teammate Jimmie Johnson to slam into the wall. Seven time NASCAR champ with a rookie mistake there. Red flag comes out. So a restart with two laps to go and Erickson fights off a few final challenges. He becomes the second Swede to win the 500. And finally tonight we close with the Coca-Cola 600. NASCAR's longest race, always a wild one. We saw multiple crashes. None scarier than a flipping Chris Busher. He's able to walk away. And five and a half hours. Eighteen cautions. Sixteen drivers who don't finish later. It comes down to the final lap. Teammates Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Duke it out. Busch gets a little loose. And Hamlin takes advantage for his first Coca-Cola win. We were talking off camera how the technology in these NASCAR cars has to be something special because that was a very violent crash and he ended up being okay. He ended up being okay. They're just remarkable. But man what a jam packed weekend of sports here in town. Definitely. Yeah. And what we were missing today was an M's win. I know. They did take two of three though. So pretty good weekend for them. Definitely. Next time though we're watching you M's we're going to go for that win. Thanks so much Jake. We'll be right back after this. You might catch a meteor shower. NASA says it may happen tomorrow night into Tuesday morning. That is when Earth will pass through debris trails of a broken comet. The agency adds that seeing it is a hit or miss because the debris might not be moving fast enough. The peak time to watch should be around 10 o'clock tomorrow night. Mike Everett is here to tell us what that cloud cover may potentially look like tomorrow night. I'm hoping it will be somewhat clear. It's going to tease us. In fact, as I walk you through that coming up over the next 24 hours, the skies will part. It really depends on where you're located. Take a look at future cloud cover as we roll through the day. Tomorrow is not looking so good. And then right around 10 p.m. we start to see some clearing. So if you're off in eastern Washington, look towards the north and fast forward about another hour or two. In fact, by about 2 a.m. it should still be visible and look right over top of Puget Sound. We're going to see some clearing down towards South Sound. We'll see it as well. And up towards the mountains is probably your best bet. What you really want to focus on is getting away from any city lights. And this is a really all or nothing proposition. According to NASA, what they're saying is it looks like it's going to be either amazing or nothing. So you know what? I'm going to head out with a lawn chair and see if I can tap into some amazing. Why not? We can maybe give it a try. And you never know. You might see that shooting star, which would be wonderful. And if you get photos and videos, send them our way. Definitely.
