We'll take your breath away tonight at 9 on ABC Closed captioning of ntv news is brought to you by Good Samaritan Hospital the medical center centered on you ntv Central and Western Nebraska's most watched evening news This is ntv news at 6 This was not an easy decision We have four outstanding communities who submitted four outstanding proposals Big news for Carney today as the governor announces the city has been chosen as the site for the new Central Nebraska Nebraska veterans home. Good evening. We thank you for joining us tonight at 6 Seth has the night off Governor Dave Heineman making the announcement late this morning Our own Jo Beth DeVera joins us live in the studio with more Jo Beth In the governor said it was a difficult decision to make but ultimately Carney prevailed based on nine key categories Heinemen it says after receiving what he called outstanding proposals from Carney Grand Island Hastings and North Platte who were all in the running the new veterans home is a positive move for all of Central Nebraska I think it's going to benefit the entire Central Nebraska area. We're going to continue to have a veterans home out here We'll just be located in Carney. It's additional Employment it'll be new construction. That'll bring jobs to the community. So the whole area is going to benefit the 121 million dollar project will replace Grand Island's outdated facility Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2015 with doors opening in 2018 now tonight on ntv news at 10 We'll hear reaction from mayors of competing communities along with Carney's own Stan Klaus Colleen Thank You Jo Beth leaders in Grand Island say they are crushed by the decision and vow to fight what they call an unfair process Joining us from our Grand Island newsroom is mayor jay vaverchuk mayor. We're glad to have you with us my pleasure Thank you with all due respect I have to ask because of the turmoil within Grand Island City Hall some are saying that is why GI lost the vets Home, how do you respond? Well first when you look at a 1200 point process with nine different divisions that started well over two years ago No, if indeed this is a fair open process that's based upon points in each division It doesn't have any bearing. So once again, we're looking at what's best for veterans not uprooting them Not uprooting the jobs the existing workforce that's in proximity of major medical facilities But also this 126 year tradition or our community stepped up to work for whatever reason was not really embraced so no we would look at the process from the standpoint of is it 1200 points based on merit that are proposed from four communities or They're gonna go ahead and look at intangible things that aren't put it on black and white. So indeed that we're very disappointed Shocked can't understand the decision because we're trying to think what's the best for veterans and we can't understand that in our community So no, I think there will be a challenge to the decision. We appreciate the recommendation We know the good leadership in our sister cities, which we very much support But we also have to think of of the veterans and to what degree this best will serve there in the future We believe that our community can serve that as we have for 126 years So in your opinion, is this not over or their intentions to try to fight this? There's more than intentions Once again, we deeply are committed to serving our veterans But when you have ground that's already there that once again a workforce already in place major medical facilities we pointed up four million dollars in cash upfront a 20 million dollar proposal and to see the scoring occur in those nine categories still is perplexing. So No, we're very much disappointed for our veterans But we need to go ahead and also think to what degree the future will be served and we're having those conversations Our community as we speak. What choices do you have would you try to appeal to the governor? Once again, we're gonna have discussions within our community. We're gonna reach out to the veterans here, but also When you look at the process, obviously there's a number of different things that we'll go ahead and raise but right now We're not willing to give up the fight. We have to go ahead and also be concerned about to what degree we can serve the veterans in the future. We believe and strongly believe that the process May have underscored that and that's what we need to go ahead and work on right now I do have one quick question. Not only did you guys not get it You came in after Hastings in third place out of four. Was that a surprise as well to you? The entire scoring system was a surprise No, there's some things for example, we have paid firefighters We have paid ambulance providers within three minutes of the home to go ahead and only receive a few more points and another Volunteer effort. I mean there's just one area that raises questions The site itself where you have a pristine site that's already can be converted almost overnight to a new Single wing facility to have its score in the area that it did doesn't make sense There's just a number of different things on the criteria But nonetheless getting the lead head start of months and months in advance also doesn't set well and the ability to respond In a short time period but I commend each of our sister cities Hastings and Carnia and North Platte For doing this just along with Grand Island. We all honor the service and sacrifice of our veterans You saw that all the proposals and that also sends a positive message that I think Shows that the last 126 years we've done that and we look forward to hopefully continuing that Because veterans are here now and they're here next month and they're going to be here for another year or two at best So we're going to continue to honor their service. Okay. I do have one more question. The governor has said flat out Carnies was better When you look at the proposal, I wouldn't disagree in terms of the Recommendation from the site selection committee. I deeply respect the governor But once again, I've got to also stand up for the rights of veterans here And we'll have that discussion but nonetheless A 20 million dollar proposal to see the rankings that occurred in such a way of the process I think need to be divisive out and that will be challenged in my opinion I really appreciate you taking the time to come in and speak with us Tonight at 10, we're going to have a live interview with mayor stan claus. So again, mr. Vaverchuk mayor Vaverchuk. Thank you so much. Thank you and give my best regards to the mayor claus as well. You got it We're going to take a look now at how the scores have been broken down The sites were graded on nine different categories like infrastructure community services and workforce carnie's proposal scored 1033 out of a possible 1200 total hastings had a score of 977 and that was enough to beat out grand island's 889 north platte who had actually proposed three different sites all came in around 850 or less you can find a breakdown in each of the scores in each category and that's on our website nebraska.tv Turning to other news of the day Progress of the chair of the board of trustees Of the day progress of the cherry avenue interchange is pacing slightly ahead of schedule Phase one construction of the new cherry avenue overpass on interstate 80 is moving along With the target completion date of august 27th This starts phase two from 11th street north to 56th street where the new veteran's home will be located Although phase two will not be completed for a couple more years officials say things are falling into place A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the cherry avenue overpass is scheduled at the archway monument on august 27th at 10 a.m Turning now to weather it is hot. Holdridge athletes Rachel Jeldon and Jenna Gillespie helped their team to an 18 and seven finish last season not to mention yet another duster run at a state title. This offseason the two high school teammates are wearing separate jerseys even though they're yet to meet his opponents it's kind of a surprise seeing each other in different duds. It's weird to see them out there in a different uniform but we haven't played them yet like against each other this year so that's kind of good in a way but I don't know it'll be fun if we do too. It's weird yeah like Jenna said seeing them out there in a different uniform but I guess as long as they have a ball in their hand and they're getting better it's great for the team to just keep practicing and when we all come back together it'll help us in the end. The two girls are hoping they get a chance to face each other this weekend during bracket play Gillespie's team went two and one in pool play. Jeldon's is undefeated. We're back after the break.
