could also see some severe weather tomorrow. We'll talk about both those things in just a second. KELOLAND NEWS STARTS NOW. Live from KELOLAND MEDIA GROUP, KELOLAND NEWS AT 10. Running out of feed, ranchers are left with few options when it comes to their cattle. Job options are plentiful. Why the Sioux Falls Regional Airport thinks you should pick them as your next employer on your money matters. Plus the impact the Link Tree Edge Center is having in Sioux Falls since opening over a month ago. We'll get to those stories in just a moment. But first, we are following breaking news on the Department of Corrections. An email sent just moments ago from Governor Noem's office says state penitentiary warden Darren Young and Secretary of Corrections Mike Liedholt have been placed on administrative leave. Now we are working on this story and we'll get into it in just a minute. But first, could be a busy night out there. And Jay's here to take a look at some of that weather out there, Jay. Yeah, Tom, we have been talking about this for several days now. Big widespread area showers and thunderstorms going to sweep across KELOLAND tonight while you sleep. And with that, we could, of course, have some severe weather. This is what it looks like right now in Rapid City. But noticing some lightning. This is from Dinosaur Hill looking to the north across Emhill. And yeah, there's a little bit of lightning off in the distance. That is a thunderstorm, which has been coming into the western part of South Dakota. And with that, we could also have some areas of heavy rainfall. A couple of things to talk about here. First of all, we have seen a little bit of shower activity erupt out ahead of that line out toward the pier area. And we do have the red, which is of the thunderstorms. Now you see that yellow box. That is where we have a severe thunderstorm morning for Butte and Lawrence County. But now you see that we have had that county light up right there. That is Butte in the Lawrence County. We've just had a flood advisory issued for those areas. They could see very heavy rainfall over the next few hours. So that's yet another thing we'll have to keep an eye on. It looks like a minor flooding of streets, some low lying areas, including around Spearfish, Belfouche, northern Spearfish canyons. And we could have an inch to inch and a half of rainfall falling over a short amount of time in that area. Of course, we do have a severe thunderstorm watch, which includes Rapid City till 11 o'clock Mountain Time tonight. Damaging winds, large hail with those thunderstorms. But the whole line of thunderstorms going to move west east across the Kelo Land region as we head on into tomorrow. And then we have this. We could see some severe thunderstorms in eastern southeastern Kelo Land tomorrow. Sioux Falls, a slight risk of that large hail, damaging winds. Area in orange, enhanced risk. They could actually see some tornadoes in Iowa and Minnesota. We'll have more on that from the storm center in just a few minutes. All right. Thank you, Jay. As we told you just a few moments ago, Governor Christine Ohm placed South South Dakota Secretary of Corrections Mike Liedholt and state penitentiary warden Darren Young on administrative leave. Now, the action comes after an anonymous complaint and an internal review conducted by the South Dakota Bureau of Human Resources. The complaint includes an allegation of sexual harassment. The governor announced that she will appoint Tim Reich to serve as the interim secretary of corrections. Governor Ohm also announced that Doug Clark, the deputy secretary of corrections, is stepping in as acting warden of the state penitentiary. A rain is on the wish list of many farm and ranchers across Kelo Land. Pasture land is drying up, leaving them few options. Many ranchers are now hauling some of their herd to the sale barn months ahead of schedule. Kelo Land's Sydney Thorson visited with ranchers at the Phillips Sale Barn today about the conditions they're up against. What is normally the slow season for this sale barn is now busy. Today in Phillip, rancher Jim Letler is selling about 30 of his cows. We run about a little over 100 head cows. In today's business, that's not a very big herd. And it's all about the drought. I mean, that's the major reason that we're putting so many cattle on the market. As a rancher, Dan Perotic says he's seen droughts come and go. But some things need to change. You just go into restaurants, they're full. People are ordering steaks. They're they're paying a lot of money for them. They like beef. We just need to translate that price of beef that the people are paying at the restaurants to these ranchers. That's what needs to happen. Owner Baxter Anders says here in Phillip on a normal year, the sale barn usually sells a couple hundred head a week. But because of the drought, he expects to sell around 500 today. Anders also runs the sale barn in Belfouche. At both of our markets, I guess the numbers of cattle are higher just due to the drought. Most people that would sell and, you know, their yearlings off grass in August are selling them right now in June, July. Anders expects sale numbers to stay high until the 2021 drought breaks. Yeah, you're concerned, I guess you've learned to deal with what you have. It's tough and the things you have to buy are so high priced. It's kind of scary. In Phillip, Sydney Thorson, Kelo Land News. The owner of the Phillip and Belfouche livestock sale barn say Belfouche is currently selling anywhere from 2500 to 4000 head a week. In a normal year, it sells around three to 400. In North Central South Dakota, business owners in the town of Eureka are feeling the impact of the drought. It affects everyone because if the farmers do good, then we all do good. But if they don't, then we don't. And so with like on the lumber end side, people haven't wanted to had they haven't wanted to do any additions or anything and stuff, you know, because they're not quite sure how everything's going to turn out. With cattle producers hurting for enough feed and farmers waiting to see how harvest shapes up, there's been a holding pattern in spending in Eureka. Digital reporter Eric Maier has a deep dive into the drought's impact on a small town in a Kelo Land dot com original. Aside from the ripple effects of drought conditions, businesses all over Kelo Land are also dealing with a labor shortage and are trying new things to draw in workers. For the first time ever, the Sioux Falls Regional Airport held a job fair today. It's tonight's Your Money Matters. Actually, my mom told me about this. The airport's first ever job fair is attracting interested applicants like Krista Cady, who are looking for a change. I've mostly worked retail, kind of low on hours, but still trying to get more and just trying to look for a more full time job. And she's finding plenty of open options from all of the vendors at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport. Right now across the airport, we're at a meeting about seven hours and seventy five openings. Operators who do the fueling, the restaurants, the security screeners. With so many open positions, the impacts of the labor shortage are evident for both passengers and all of those currently working at the airport. Your employees get tired, they get a little overworked, a little over stressed, then injuries happen. And so we're just trying to help alleviate that. I've been with FedEx for six years now, and I haven't seen anything like this as far as employee shortages yet. It's just it's crazy how short staffed everyone is. The labor shortage is even more noticeable as the airport gets busier with more travelers and more freight arriving every day throughout the pandemic. We're seeing record level packages, you know, even just if you think about all the packages you get for Christmas, it's been that way for the last 18 months. It's why these companies and the airport itself are doing everything they can to entice new workers to join their team. It's a part time position, but you have full time benefits, health, dental, vision, the whole nine yards. Incentives that are resonating with some job seekers. A lot of the pays do sound really nice. The Sioux Falls Regional Airport directors say recruiting more employees is essential to keeping flights on time and getting passengers the services and safety they need to fly. You can learn more about some of the 75 job openings at the airport with this story on KELOLAND.com. The Link Treehouse Center in Sioux Falls has been open for about a month and a half. And today we are learning about its impacts. On the night beat, KELOLAND's Dan Santella takes a look at its reach. Good evening, Dan. Hey, Tom, the Link in downtown Sioux Falls offers to help people struggling with their mental health or an addiction. The city of Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, Abera Health and Sanford Health are all part of it. Alicia Kalura, assistant director with the city of Sioux Falls' health department, gave an update to the Sioux Falls City Council today about the Link. Just as of this morning, I was excited to hear that the Link has already performed 400 patient triages in six weeks' time. They're even busier in the second month than they were the first month. To triage is to assess ensuing steps. Each patient will be assessed based on the need that they present with. And what the triage process means is where is the best next place for that patient? Is it the psychiatric acute care area? Is it the sobering observation area? Or is it the detox rooms? And so it's really defining for those patients what's the next best step. And the next best step may be to another community agency. Tonight, the city council advanced an ordinance that provides $800,000 of supplemental money for building improvements as well as operations at the Link. This money comes from the state. Maddie Miller, nurse manager with the Link, also spoke to the council today. I can say that even in the short time we've been open, we've served several individuals that have become very familiar to us in our sobering program. But after they've seen us a few times, they've decided to give withdrawal management a try. And they have found some stability and some sobriety in that. She says their message has spread. We've had a few people that have come off of the street, typically a sobering client, gone through withdrawal. Maybe they're still relapsing, but they have told their friends, you deserve this. You should go try this and get treatment. And now their friends are in treatment. The Link's website features frequently asked questions. You can find your way there by checking out this report on KELOLAND.com. Thank you, Dan. A familiar face is returning to the anchor desk tomorrow night. KELOLAND LIVE DOPPLER HD. Sponsored by Denny Menholdt Toyota. We had a few sprinkles over Sioux Falls early today. Then the clouds cleared. We had some sunshine right now, 74 degrees as we wait for the thunderstorms to come in. They're still well northwest of Rapid City, about 40 miles to the northwest. We've been seeing some lightning off in the distance as we look in that direction from Dinosaur Hill. Of course, there is a severe thunderstorm watch that does include Rapid City until 11 o'clock Mountain Time tonight. Significant damaging winds and large hail a possibility. I'll run down the last warnings in just a second. Otherwise, here's what's going to happen. Thunderstorms in the west right now are going to move across the area tonight while you sleep. They'll be with us here in eastern KELOLAND tomorrow. We will see some widespread, decent rainfall. Right now, still thinking around an inch or even more in some spots of rain, mainly the southern half of KELOLAND, especially along and south of I-90. I'll show you this in just a second. The northern part of South Dakota, not so much. Third half an inch amounts is what we're looking at. We will have a brisk easterly wind tomorrow. Highs will be in the low to the mid 70s. Then the clouds clear. Thursday, Friday, mostly sunny, warm and back up. Low 80s in eastern KELOLAND. Degree or two below normal for this time of year. Mid to upper 80s in the west. As far as the weekend is concerned, Saturday partly cloudy. We pulled the rainfall chances in eastern KELOLAND for the time being because it's just pretty minor. Mostly sunny. 80s in the east, around 90 in the west. And next week we're going to see a warming trend. Hot weather returning by the following weekend. All right, here's a look at KELOLAND live. We have had some showers light up toward the Missouri River. You see this little band. We have had some thundershowers right along I-90. But really the area we're watching right now is what's going on out toward the Black Hills because that's where we have some activity at the present time. In fact, let's zoom in on this a little bit for you. Here's where we have the line of thundershowers out ahead of the main energy. But here's the main energy right here. Very heavy rainfall in here. Mead and Lawrence counties. Flood advisory posted. That's why the county is light up and green. We also have another severe thunderstorm morning that's been issued for Butte and Lawrence County across to Mead County. The main threats out of this, about 60 mile an hour winds, one each type of hail. But again, also the very heavy rainfall. It's still well to the north of Rapid City, but we may see some movement in that direction later on tonight. This whole line of thunderstorms is going to sweep across KELOLAND later tonight while you sleep. Now, tomorrow we have a severe weather risk area. It includes Sioux Falls for a slight risk, but a greater risk of severe weather in Minnesota and Iowa tomorrow. Large hail damaging winds. And the case of Minnesota and Iowa, there might even be some tornadoes. All right, futurecast looks like this. Thunderstorms moving across the area while you sleep. Coming through the central part of South Dakota during the overnight hours. And here's what we're looking at for rainfall potential through tomorrow. We're watching that area along I-90. In fact, all you have to do is drive to a small town in eastern South Dakota. In tonight's Eye on Kellen, Kelley Volk brings you the decades of history behind a cottage and garden in Gerald County. This cottage surrounded by colorful flowers is nestled in Wessington Springs. The Shakespeare Garden and Anne Hathaway Cottage sprouted to life almost a century ago after an English professor's international travels. Emma Shea had been teaching at the college in Wessington Springs. When Mrs. Shea went to England in 1926 when she was in her 60s, she went by herself to see the homes of the British authors and toured. She got the idea to have a Shakespeare Garden on this campus. On Shakespeare's birthday in 1927, Mrs. Shea, her husband, who was also a professor, students and others, started building a garden in Wessington Springs. Then in the early 30s, a home, styled after Anne Hathaway's cottage, was built for the Shea's retirement. This is more or less a replica of part of the cottage in England that was her home. The college in Wessington Springs closed in 1964. Another school operated at the spot before closing in 1968. Today, the cottage and garden are all that remain of the campus. We scrub the floors, dust the furniture. Susan Arnott is the president of the Shakespeare Garden Society. The organization formed in 1989, purchased the property and restored it. Our first weekend when we started cleaning out the garden, we took out about 25 loads of pickup loads of branches and weeds and garbage. And you'd never know that by taking a stroll through the garden today. It's just so peaceful to sit out on the bench and listen to the water splashing from the fountain and the birds singing. It's just a neat place to collect your thoughts. Another unique find here is the thatched roof, which was done in the early 90s. We think that Mrs. Shea wanted it thatched, but it never was. This attraction in Wessington Springs has had visitors from all over the world. We get motorcycle riders and bike riders and quite a few people come through here and bring a lot of visiting to this town. Not only does this place attract people to town, but it also highlights history. There are a lot of people who don't know who Shakespeare is. They don't know, you know, yeah, believe it or not. And I always mentioned Anne Hathaway, a lot of us know that Anne Hathaway was his wife, but a lot of people have never heard of her and they wonder why is this Anne Hathaway cottage. So I think we bring attention to some some culture and some literature from from the past that was very important. For Arnot, the cottage and garden hold a special place in her heart. I just think it's really important that that this place survives and that we keep that memory of the school that meant so much to our community. That's why these women hope to see this small town treasure blooming for years to come. With Eye on Kelo Land, I'm Kellie Voel. Wow, what a gem. After missing the past year of racing due to an injury, sprint car driver Mark Dobmeier finally completed his long road back to the racetrack this past week and did so in style. We caught up with him ahead of Sunday's races at Huczitz Speedway. Mark Dobmeier's last time racing at Huczitz ended in a feature victory back in 2017. With the track reopening last year, Dobmeier has been anxious to race on it once again. I've watched it pretty much every night religiously, just keeping an eye on everything down here and they've had some great tracks. That good old Huczitz Speedway curb up on the wall again. But a year ago, Dobmeier suffered a severe spinal injury while racing. All he hoped for was being able to get back behind the wheel. Oh definitely, right after the crash when you're dealing with all the hospital stuff and you don't know what the answer was. Obviously everyone knows what my first question was to the doctor. Dobmeier set his sights on returning to the track this spring, but he wasn't at the point in his recovery his doctors wanted before he did. They informed me at that time I had to be smart about it and wait until it was a full year. Well July 4th was the mark where they were happy and they were content with letting me go back to racing. And the Buffalo Wild Wings 13 car didn't waste any time announcing its return. We raced Thursday and Friday at River City Speedway and I was fortunate enough to pick up a couple of wins right away and get some speed going. Dobmeier missed out on a third straight win Sunday night at Huczitz Speedway, but the biggest victory of them all perhaps is simply the ability to race again. Very fortunate that I can get back and do this and I've got great sponsors and crew and everybody that stood behind me the whole way and all these amazing fans. The important help and support is just very humbling experience. Dobmeier ended up finishing 8th Sunday night at Huczitz Speedway. His team hasn't announced when or where he'll race next. Just before 10 tonight we learned Governor Kristi Noem has placed State Penitentiary Warden Darren Young and South Dakota Secretary of Corrections Mike Liedholt on administrative leave. Now this comes after an internal review by the South Dakota Bureau of Human Resources into an anonymous complaint. It includes allegations of sexual harassment, nepotism, low pay, bad equipment. The complaint says quote, the sexual harassment for one individual may stop but they just move on to the next. Governor Noem says Doug Clark is stepping in as acting warden of the State Penitentiary. We'll have much more on this tomorrow and on Kelloland.com. It's a very active night in the weather department. Jay a lot going on. Yeah those thunderstorms in western South Dakota are going to be moving to the east. Right now very heavy rainfall moving into the Spearfish and Leede areas. We have a flood advisory there. Also severe weather. We could be seeing a little bit of hail and strong winds with those storms. They will move all the way across South Dakota getting to Sioux Falls by tomorrow morning. Tomorrow during the day look for lots of thunderstorms, some heavy rain and maybe even some severe weather in southeastern Kelloland tomorrow afternoon. Don's back tomorrow night. That's it for us. Thank you everyone.
