One Tree Hill, January on the WB, is fresh from the frog. Next on WB 33 News at 9, the temperature in North Texas is dipping fast. Fred Barnhill will have your chilly forecast. Plus, a new Bin Laden tape has surfaced, threatening more terror attacks. And foreigners entering U.S. airports will have to go through extra security beginning tomorrow. Also, pop singer Britney Spears got hitched, and she gave her groom a special gift. The news starts right now. Live from KVAF Dallas, Fort Worth, this is WB 33 News at 9. It got cold rather quickly today, yes, pretty windy. Sure was a rude awakening for North Texans, bracing for cold temperatures as the chill of winter returns. Good evening, I'm Dawn Tongus. Jim is off. We begin tonight with our chilly and changing weather. What a difference a day makes. Yesterday it was spring-like, not today. North Texans had to bundle up to venture outside after a cool front blew in, bringing temperatures down from the 70s into the 40s. Meteorologist Fred Barnhill joins us now with more on how low it's going to go. I tell you what, it's going to go quite low on this Sunday night. I tell you what, big change in the weather, of course, the past few days. We've seen daytime highs to the 70s. Check out ahead of this strong cold front in San Antonio today, 77 degrees, Brownsville 81. Our high temperature was reached around daybreak. It was 69. And by late morning, we're already down into the 40s for temperatures. Look at Amarillo, today's high only 37. For now, you can see with that northwest breeze, the cold air is coming in. Our actual air temperature for now is 42. Our windchill down in the lower 30s. And check out Oklahoma City, already down in the 20s. And by tomorrow morning, we'll forecast a freeze, at least 29. But some areas just off to our northwest will be down in the low to mid-20s. And Oklahoma City, as well as Amarillo, down in the teens. Amarillo, we're forecasting a low temperature of 13 degrees. Now coming up, we'll look at your Friday forecast, and it spells more cold air over the next several days. Winter's back. In other news tonight, U.S. officials are analyzing a new audio tape that could be the voice of Osama bin Laden. The Arab television network Al Jazeera aired the tape today from a man claiming to be the Al Qaeda chief. The voice refers to recent world events, including the November bombing in Saudi Arabia. On the tape, the man urges Muslims to attack American troops and nations that support the U.S. The Pentagon today released this dramatic video tape of a raid by U.S. forces last week. Troops stormed a mosque in southwestern Iraq to break up a suspected hub of insurgent activity. Soldiers confiscated a large cache of weapons and made 32 arrests. But angry Sunni Muslims claim that during that raid, the Americans disturbed sacred areas. Military officials say the tape proved soldiers were sensitive to their surroundings. A South Carolina soldier whose family says she loved to fly has become the first woman pilot killed in the war in Iraq. 27-year-old Captain Kimberly Hampton died Saturday after her OH-58 Kiowa helicopter crashed near Fallujah. Witnesses say ground fire brought the craft down. Hampton had been in Iraq since August. British troops in Iraq got a surprise visit today from their commander-in-chief. You know how much pride people have back in Britain in the work that you've done. Prime Minister Tony Blair praised the 10,000 or so British troops in Iraq during an impromptu visit to Basra. Blair told the troops the next six months will be critical to Iraq's future for setting up a legitimate government. There is more misery for the thousands of people who survived a massive earthquake in Iran. Residents of bomb left homeless by the quake are enduring freezing nights and unnerving aftershocks. And, there is word, nearby villagers are now stealing what little supplies they have left. More than 30,000, almost half of the town's people, were killed. Here in North Texas, Iranians are mourning that terrible loss in their homeland. But as WB33's Heather Barron reports, in their grief, the community is also raising money to help the survivors rebuild. Iranians in North Texas remember those lost in the earthquake and those left behind. They're thousands of miles from the tragic scene in Bob, but their hearts are heavy as they share stories of family members back home. No doubt all Iranians have lost their lives. Today, dozens gathered in Frisco looking for comfort in each other and in prayer. Tens of thousands of people in Bob are homeless and enduring freezing temperatures as they recover from an earthquake that killed more than 30,000 people. Many Iranians in Texas lost most of their family members. This young woman says over 50 of her relatives died in the earthquake. We're supporting each other as best we can emotionally and obviously being so far away from the people that are still left, it's really hard, it's really hard. Since the December 26 earthquake hit, there have been numerous tragic stories. But there have also been miracles, including that of a 97-year-old woman who was pulled from the rubble after being trapped for over a week. Now North Texans are hoping to send their own miracle in the way of encouragement and financial support. They need shelter, they need blankets, they need clothes, they need medicine. Iranian-American groups are trying to make that possible by raising money for the injured survivors and children orphaned by the earthquake. And a local doctor hopes to set up a health clinic in Bob in the next few months. So we have the plan ready. We just need fundraising for that. The impact of the rubble and devastation in Bob may seem insurmountable, but many Iranians say they'll do whatever they can to help rebuild and lift the spirits of the victims. Heather Barron, WB33 News at 9. And you can make a donation to the earthquake victims at any Chase Bank just ask for the Bob Earthquake Relief Fund. Dallas police took a man in for questioning after a fatal shooting at a sports bar. Investigators say two men got into a scuffle in the parking lot at Tito's in Oak Cliff last night. Officials say the man who died had been firing off shots into the air. When a friend tried to stop him, the two got into a fight. That's when the victim was shot. Two Dallas police officers remain on paid leave tonight after using deadly force on a mentally ill woman. 48-year-old Diane Kemp was shot to death at a South Dallas motel on Saturday. Police say the officers had no choice but to open fire when the woman lunged at an officer with a box cutter slicing his leg. The woman's son claims police used excessive force. Irving police also believe an officer was justified in killing a suspect on Saturday. Investigators say the officer found the armed man in a remote area, and when he refused to drop his gun, a fight broke out, ending with the officer killing the man. Police want to know what that man was doing in the woods. They still haven't released his identity. The new year has ushered in some tough new rules for truckers who drive long distances. The new law beginning today requires long-haul truckers to take more frequent and longer breaks. Drivers must rest for 10 hours after working 11 straight hours. Enforcers say the new rules will reduce accidents caused by sleepy drivers, but some truckers don't like that new plan very much. It may take them five hours to load your load. Then when you come back up to drive, you only have six hours to drive the whole day. You might have to go a thousand miles, but you can't get three hours, four hours out of it. And that hurts. I think it hurts. Officials say 75 people are killed and hundreds more injured each year in accidents involving trucks. They think the new rules will improve safety. Well, they're celebrating at NASA after seeing the first images from the Mars rover. It was a party atmosphere in the control center for those who have worked on that project for years. They were thrilled to see the black and white pictures from the Spirit spacecraft. The images began arriving about three hours after the robot landed on the Red Planet. Scientists hope to have color pictures starting tomorrow. And coming up, Democrat White House hopefuls go head to head and they're ready to attack. Plus, Britney Spears got married this weekend. It's a shock to everyone, including the pop star. We'll hear from some of her fans. And the tiny hobbits are living large at the box office. We'll have your weekend totals a little later. Plus, we'll hear from the Cowboys as they reflect on their season-ending loss to the Panthers. That's Later in Sports. MUSIC Hi, hey, how you doing? The burger for the number six there? The visit program kicks in using fingerprints and pictures to confirm the identities of the 24 million visa carrying visitors to the U.S. every year. The measures will be used at 115 airports. The security plan has been in place at DFW since last month where it started as a pilot program. Homeland security and fighting terrorism were the key topics today during the first debate of the election year. The seven Democrats vying for the chance to take on President Bush gathered in Iowa to face off. The exchange was feisty with frontrunner Howard Dean drawing most of the fire. Dean used his time to reiterate his opposition to the war in Iraq. Our resources belong in fighting Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda has got us in a position where we are now worried because we're at level orange. We need a concentrated attack on Al Qaeda and on Osama Bin Laden. The candidates have just 15 days until the first real test. That would be the Iowa caucuses. One of those Democrat hopefuls is getting a boost from George Bush country. Country singer Willie Nelson debuted a new anti-war ballad for candidate Dennis Kucinich in Austin last night. Nelson sang the song for the first time during a fundraising concert for the congressman. Pop princess Britney Spears is now a married woman tying the knot in Las Vegas last night. But apparently Spears wants to now say, I don't. Spears married 22-year-old Jason Alexander from her same town in Louisiana. But WB33's Joanne Castaneda has the scoop on the singer's efforts to call it quits just a day into her marriage. First there was the kiss, then the wedding. No, Britney Spears didn't marry Madonna, but yesterday the princess of pop tied the knot with a childhood friend, leaving many fans speechless. I don't understand that. That's crazy. I think she was just plain dumb. The quickie ceremony was performed in Las Vegas. The 22-year-old bride wore torn jeans and a baseball cap. The marriage, though, reportedly is already on the rocks. The pop singer is filed for an annulment, leading many to wonder. The word I'm looking for, it's all contrived. The manager at this Dallas music store believes the whole thing was a stunt, much like the kiss at last year's MTV Music Awards show, a publicity move designed to sell more CDs. Spears' latest album, In the Zone, debuted at the top of the charts, but still lags behind her previous record sales. It's all to keep her name out there, to keep all stars to it, to keep her name out there, be in the public eye. These fans agree, pointing to other famous people doing outrageous things for attention. The same thing with Paris Hilton. Her videotape came out right when her show was starting on Fox. The news is a surprise. Nepsules didn't affect Edgar Martinez's decision to buy a Spears CD, saying he's still a fan. Their life should not affect their CD. You know, it's what their voice, what counts. And you heard it. Some speculate that the marriage thing is just a stunt. Spears will be promoting that new CD and the concert tour that starts in the spring. And still ahead, the Cowboys look back at their surprising season following their playoff loss to the Panthers. Bob Urzik has comments a little bit later in sports. And it's time to take the coats back out of the closet. Boy, it's cold. Winter is back. Fred's up next with your Workweek forecast. Now, weather with meteorologist Fred Barnhill. I tell you what, it's been rather snowy across the Pacific Northwest. You're looking at things out of Seattle, and over the past 24 to 36 hours, more snowfall, even a few additional inches of snow there. A welcome sight, and of course you need that coffee out there to keep warm. And the kids, of course, are having a great time out there doing a little bit of skiing. And I tell you what, folks, there's another winter storm forming in the Northwest. Right now Seattle's reporting a clear sky, their current temperature down to 23 degrees. That's very cold for Seattle. But there's another storm system brewing offshore, and it's going to come inland over the next 24 to 36 hours. And already winter storm watches in effect for Seattle as well as Portland for Monday. There's a chance for several inches of snow here, so keep that in mind if you're heading towards the Pacific Northwest. But for us, we have the cold air filtering into Texas now, an Arctic air mass. I will point out the core of that Arctic air will stay north of Texas. Right now temperatures are dropping below zero across much of the Dakotas. Fargo right now is at minus 8 above, and in Minneapolis they're at 5 above. Chicago, they've seen snow throughout the day. Right now it's 29 degrees in Chicago. And I will point out there was hundreds of flights canceled at Chicago O'Hare due to the locally heavy snows throughout the day. But the snow now is pushing much farther off towards north and east. Because no snow is in our forecast, just the cold air will be the big story now for the next couple days. Now here's a look at the satellite loop, and it will show that frontal system. It will show that rather strong cold front because earlier today there were a few isolated showers along that frontal system across the Metroplex. But it's mainly been a drive-thru system. And if you notice much farther off towards the east and southeast, Huntsville, some rain this hour. Houston's reporting some light rain. But we're noticing some clearing across a large part of west Texas. So for us, we'll call for partial clearing by late tonight. But again, the big story is the cold air. We have that northwest wind ushering in the cold air. Our temperature now has dropped off into the 30s. We're officially at 39 degrees. But check out Amarillo. The actual air temperature is 20 degrees. And by tomorrow morning, they should drop off to at least 13 above. Oklahoma City will drop off into the teens. For now, Oklahoma City is at 27. Check out Midlands at 44. And that cold air is filtering all the way down into the Hill Country. San Antonio, earlier today they were well into the 70s. But they've dropped off to 58. And by tomorrow morning, they will likely drop off into the 30s. Houston, they're currently reading 57 with some rain. Now they have a northwest wind. But look at Brownsville. It's still warm there. It's at 73 degrees with a cloudy sky and a few sprinkles. Here's a check of current temperatures around the Metroplex. Most locations in the 30s or 40s out there didn't sell to 36. But if you factor in that strong northwest breeze, the wind chill temperatures are down in the 20s and 30s. At DFW for now, it's 30 degrees. Look at Fort Worth from each of them. It feels like 27 degrees. So we're at 39. And again, that strong north wind is dropping that wind chill temperature officially down to 30. The humidity is down to 57%. Our official high is 69. That occurred before daybreak. But the low temperature so far is our current temperature of 39. You can see the record high for this day, 81 degrees. So the next 24 hours, we'll keep that cold air across the region with that northwest flow. Our sky tomorrow will be coming partly cloudy. For tonight, we'll forecast low temperatures down into the 20s. We're going for upper 20s. But some locations will drop down into the mid-20s just up to our northwest partial clearing. And tomorrow, partly cloudy with daytime highs only in the lower 40s. The five-day forecast now will show for Tuesday as well as Wednesday. Still cold with highs in the low to mid-40s, nighttime lows in the 20s, but turning warmer Thursday and Friday with highs in the 50s. Look on the bright side. It could be Seattle. Yes, it could be Seattle. So in that respect, not too bad, huh? It's not bad. Thanks, Fred. The Cowboys' Cinderella season came to a crashing halt in the first round of the playoffs. We'll show you what went wrong and hear from the team as it looks forward to next year. Plus, the Packers and the Seahawks battled to stay alive in the postseason. Bob Berzik has those highlights next in force. 37. 37. 38. Hello, 37. 39. 40. 41. 42. 43. 44. 45. 46. Daddy, why does the dough even hate you? The last thing anybody expected was the Cowboys' defense to take the night off in their playoff battle with the Panthers. I don't know. I'm not sure. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. It's no fun to come in here and get knocked out first round. But what about the 24-hour rule? This one will definitely last longer, especially for Terrence Newman, who Carolina picked apart, spoofooing his near-election as the league's Rookie of the Year. I tell you what, you taking Newman to two, and you just straight feed him in his head. Newman don't know where he's at. I was just pretty much getting abused today. You know, I put this on my hands. I put most of those points on my hands, because I gave a lot of plays, third down catches, and I take the blame for this. I'm sick that I'm not going to get to see another game and see what we can do again next week. I couldn't wait to see another outing by our team and with Bill. But as the emotions start to settle down and as time heals the wounds, the Cowboys will ponder the effort it took to turn a trio of 5-11 seasons into a 10-win playoff team in just one year and try to follow the example of their coach, who set the bar high for yet another offseason. I promised them that I wouldn't rest and I'd be tireless in the pursuit of that and that when we got back in here, that we'll respond better. That's what I have to do. I've got to improve the team by every vehicle that's at our disposal. We're going to have a good cap situation. I'm certain we're going to be active in pre-agency. And now the postmortem begins here at Valley Ranch. What do you do to get ready for the draft? How about mini camps and training camps? It's going to leave some veterans wondering about their status with this club for next year. I did everything they asked me to do. And when the opportunity arose, I think I stepped up to the plate. I mean, I'm a guy who needs 20 carries and more and when I got those, I think I was productive. The only thing I can pretty much control is me coming back to work, having a great offseason, working hard, and pretty much everything else will take care of itself. And we may learn which way Parcells is leaning when the coach holds his state of the team season-ending news conference later this week. From Valley Ranch, Dave Crome, WB 33, sports. Any other wild card game was the Packers entertaining the Seahawks in the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field where the windshield hit a balmy seven degrees. Seattle was looking to avenge a 22-point loss in Green Bay back in October, but the Seahawks trailed by a touchdown late in the game when Matt Hasselbeck hit Bobby Ingram for a big 34-yard pickup down to the Packers eight. That led to Sean Alexander's one-yard score as the game headed to overtime tied at 27. The Seahawks then won the coin flip and took the ball with the Hasselbeck even telling the referee that they were going to score and win. But on their second possession of OT, Al Harris picked off Hasselbeck's pass and the braided one raced 52 yards for the winning touchdown after avoiding Hasselbeck's tackle to give the Packers an electrifying 33-27 overtime victory. Everybody gave a good rush. You know what I'm saying, just so happened we made a good read. Man, it's all film study, all anticipated and I know a quarterback ain't going to catch me. Unless he caught him by his hair. In the AFC, Peyton Manning of the Colts hosting the Broncos. Manning who was 0-3 in the playoffs answered his critics with five touchdown passes today including four in the first half. The Broncos were so clueless that they forgot to touch Marvin Harris on his short completion in the second quarter. So Harrison just got up and ran it in for a 46-yard touchdown. That's how bad Denver was today and how good Manning was after throwing for 377 yards and five touchdowns in the Colts' 41-10 routs of the Broncos. So here's the playoff schedule for next week on Saturday in the NFC. The Panthers visit the St. Louis Rams at 3.30 followed by the Patriots hosting the Titans at 7.15 in the AFC. And on Sunday, the Colts visit the Chiefs at noon in an AFC showdown followed by the Eagles entertaining the Packers at 3.45 in the other NFC game. Oh, by the way, the BCS Championship game, aka the Sugar Bowl, is also tonight. But Top ranked Oklahoma trailing number two LSU right now 21-7 in the third quarter. If the Tigers hold on, they'll be the BCS National Champs even though USC is ranked number one in both the media and the coaches' polls. Yeah, and the Mavericks and Stars, both off tonight but they are both in action tomorrow night, both on the road. Coach Parcell stated a team will be interesting though this week, won't it, Steve? Yeah, there's going to be some things done there and of course in the offseason some moves made, probably most at the running back spot which was a major sore spot this season. Few changes ahead. Few changes ahead, probably all for the better. Let's hope at least. Let's hope. Well, this marks the third straight week of box office dominance by the Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King. This weekend, the movie raked in nearly $31 million. Steve Martin's remake of Cheaper by the Dozen is number two with nearly $22 million. Something's Gotta Give is in third place with $12.5 million. Cold Mountain is number four with more than $11.5 million and Paycheck rounds out the top five. Sort of a movie kind of weather weekend. Yes, it's a good week to go to a movie. Look at lows tonight, upper 20s and tomorrow we're looking at highs only lower 40s so the next couple of days, a winter coat is definitely needed. Probably the mostly cloudy skies. Look at Wednesday, still in the 40s but warming up into the upper 50s by Friday. Bring in the pets. Yes, bring them in. Don't forget, little rover outside. No, you don't want me to. You and your eight dogs. Hey, I got seven only. Only seven. We bring them all in a night. I might have one. You have one. Okay, there we go. There you go. That's our news. Thanks for joining us. Have a great week. You're watching KVAS-TV, Dallas, Fort Worth, WB33.
