Through August 19th, just off the corner of Collins & Council near Collins Plaza. Bring your trade and be prepared to buy. You are watching KCRG-TV9 Cedar Rapids. And now, from your 24-hour news source, Bruce Ouney, Edie Fawcett, John Campbell on sports, and meteorologist Denny Frary with tonight's weather. This is TV9 Eyewitness News at 6. See, it's this right here. Cedar Rapids City Council members may be up for a pay raise, but they're not the ones asking for the increase. Good evening, I'm Edie Fawcett. We'll have more on that story in just a moment. I'm Bruce Ouney, live from our town, Manchester. I'm here in Terrell Park tonight, and this is a community that's known for its beautiful architecture and its friendly people. It's also known now as the home of the newest congressman on Capitol Hill, Republican Jim Nussel. Coming up in just a few minutes on Eyewitness News, we'll be talking live to Congressman Nussel. And we also want to remind you that coming up tonight at 6.30, a special half-hour report recapping our entire week in our town, Manchester. A lot to look forward to. Sure is. Great town. Thanks, Bruce. Our top story tonight. Do you think the Cedar Rapids Mayor and City Council members should receive a salary increase? Well, the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce thinks they should. Every election year, council members set the salaries for those elected in November, and today the chamber announced its view that those offices deserve more money. Tonight, Eyewitness News reporter Keith King has reasons and reaction. The task force recommends that the council begin to correct the disparity in salaries that has developed over the past several years. A disparity in salaries between the mayor and city council, the elected officials, and city administrators, the hired officials. The Chamber of Commerce announced today they feel that disparity should be narrowed. They want the mayor's salary of $49,000 to go up 6.1% next year to $52,000. They want the commissioner's current salary of just under $45,000 to go up 7.24% next year to $48,000. If council members do not give themselves a pay hike, the chamber task force worries. Salary will keep quality people out of city government. I think you need to have a good salary base in order to have good qualified candidates. The chamber task force study shows a salary difference started to grow in the early 80s. Since these people manage a $124 million city government operation, the chamber wants the most qualified at the top. Mention government salary hikes to taxpayers, you can expect to hear an opinion. The rest of us don't get that kind of increase. With the cost of living going up, just to keep pace with inflation, you need salary hikes. I think if they had political aspirations, they would see that as a stepping stone. The city council has a certain window of time to vote for a pay raise, and that window closes 45 days before the November election. Voting for a pay raise is a sticky issue, especially during an election year. But the chamber of commerce hopes to wipe away some of that stickiness, so qualified people will be attracted to city hall. Keith King, TV9, Eyewitness News. The chamber task force is also recommending a $200 a month car allowance. A previous council voted to do away with that perk, but the chamber feels the elected officials should be reimbursed for the use of their own cars. A Waterloo teenager is dead tonight after playing a game of Russian roulette. Indiana police say 17-year-old Tony Lewis shot himself in the head Wednesday night while playing the game with a friend. Police say a five-shot revolver with one-spent cartridge was found at the scene. Lewis would have been a junior at West High in Waterloo this fall. A Waterloo man is in jail on robbery charges tonight. Police arrested 30-year-old Kelly Ann Allen Miller and charged him with two counts of first degree robbery. Police say he held a Paul standard on August 7th and a Vickers station the next day. Miller allegedly used a chunk of concrete as a weapon in those robberies. Miller is being held on $50,000 bond on each count. We now know what caused an explosion at a home in Wabique on Tuesday. According to the state fire marshal, there was a slow leak of LP gas which built up causing an explosion that ripped through this house. The home is owned by Frank Gilroy, who was working on the house at the time of the accident. The report shows the explosion may have been sparked by an open well pump motor or an electric water heater in the basement. One of the nation's fastest growing computer software companies celebrated its grand opening in Hiawatha today. Parsons Technology officially opened its new Hiawatha plant. Bob and Martha Parsons started the company seven years ago. After two years in business, they lost their entire investment. They didn't give up and just last year gross revenues exceeded $18 million. One of our characteristics is we look ahead. Our eyes are focused mostly on what needs to be done and what opportunities stay in the future. This is one day of looking back. With that in mind, it's quite an exciting day at that. Just how fast is the company growing? Parsons sells 19 different products, twice as many as one year ago. And 190 people work at the new plant, that's also double the number of employees in August of 1990. National publications like the New York Times and USA Today have written about this new leader in the computer software industry. Across the street from the Parsons plant, about 30 to 40 people protested. They weren't protesting the new plant. They were there because Governor Terry Branstad was there. Wherever the governor goes these days, angry state workers are there to greet him. So far this summer, the governor has eliminated close to 1,800 state jobs and workers say it's political payback because they didn't support him in last fall's election. The governor says he made the cuts because Iowa's bureaucracy had become bloated. Laid-off state workers vow to continue following Governor Branstad around the state to make sure he remembers how his decisions have affected their lives. Uncle Sam wants his money back. One day after a huge celebration to honor Iowa's veterans, the U.S. government says some Iowa National Guard members called up during Operation Desert Storm were overpaid. At least five Iowa Guard units are affected. That includes the 134th Medical Company of Washington, the 209th at Iowa City, and the 224th Engineer Battalion from Southeast Iowa. As many as 25,000 soldiers nationwide could have been overpaid. Here's a look at some of the news happening in the states around Iowa tonight. Developers in East Peoria, Illinois broke ground today for a riverboat gambling operation along the Mississippi. Ready to hit the water by November 1st, officials say the floating casino should not be affected by the boats already operating out of Iowa. And hundreds of people showed up in Sioux City today hoping to land a job as an extra in a TV movie. The movie called A Thousand Heroes Chronicles, a story of United Flight 232 that crashed at Sioux Gateway Airport in 1989. It's scheduled to air on ABC sometime next spring. And coming up next, Bruce Aune, live in our town Manchester. And I am live in our town, Edie. And coming up in just a moment, we'll be talking live to one of Manchester's most famous residents. And that, of course, is Second District Congressman Jim Nussel. That's still ahead on your 24-hour news source, KCRG-TV9. When you buy a new pickup, you're making an investment, an investment that'll take years of abuse from the elements. And if your truck can't cut it, you could be left with nothing. So much for your hard-earned money. But there is one pickup that's built to last, Ford Ranger. It's rated the best-built compact pickup, which is why it also has the highest trade-in value. Truth is, anything less than a Ford Ranger would be like throwing money to the wind. I'm also proud of Tagler Design Center, where I've been advertising fieldstone cabinets ever since I was four years old. Please stop into our showroom so we can help you build the kitchen of your dreams with Maiden, Iowa fieldstone cabinets. That's Tagler Design Center, Cedar Rapids, and Manchester. Now, eyewitness news at six continues with our town, Manchester. Welcome back to our town, Manchester. You know, it's hard to believe it's been more than nine months already since that big congressional victory for Republican Jim Nussel last fall, one that sent him to Washington, D.C., as the youngest member of Congress. But even though Jim Nussel is now working a lot of time in Washington, he still calls Manchester home. And Congressman Nussel joins us right now. And that's something you're really proud of, that you live in a great town like Manchester. I really am proud of it. You know, when you see so many people leaving the state of Iowa and having opportunities elsewhere, I really like to promote staying right here in a small town. And, you know, at KCRG, you guys have done a fantastic job this last few weeks of promoting small town Iowa. And that's really nice because there are, there is life here. A lot of people think small towns are dead, and it's not true because I live in one and I know it's very, very much full of life. Well, I know you not only live in one. When you were the Delaware County attorney, you were very, very involved in this community as well. Well, you wear a lot of hats when you live in a small town. I was on the volunteer fire department. I was president of the Chamber of Commerce on the Economic Development Commission. I helped out quite a bit. And it's not just me. There's quite a few people that have done that and many other things in Manchester. You're on recess right now, spending some time in eastern Iowa here in your district, and also looking over the new district after reapportionment. That's correct. We've been doing some town meetings. I was lucky enough to have a town meeting in Independence just a few nights ago and also down in Tipton. And also spent some time over in the new district, what we're calling the new district. So, yes, it's a good time to find out what the folks are thinking and also to do some exploring for 1992. You know, when you go to Washington, D.C., what do you tell people about a place like Manchester, Iowa? Well, I tell them that there's a lot of caring folks back here who really care about values, about principles that are important to all of us. You know, that's something that small towns and especially Iowa have kept. A lot of urban areas have maybe forgotten some of those principles, like being able to keep your door open at night, not having to lock it, and knowing who your neighbors are and being able to go to church on Sunday. We just heard the church bells here before the show came up. So it's a beautiful place to live, to raise your children, to educate them, to build a business, and to even retire. And that's what's great about small towns in Iowa. And even having a great park like this where you know your kids can go play and they're going to be safe. Exactly. Sarah has played here a couple of times, and even though it's a little bit farther away from my house, we've had some fun in Terrell Park and many of the other parks around Manchester. Well, we thank you for joining us, Congressman Nussel, and good luck when you head back to Washington. I say welcome for a change. Welcome to Manchester, and I'd welcome everybody in Northeast Iowa to Manchester, Iowa. All right, thank you. Second District Congressman Jim Nussel. And I want to remind you right now that coming up at 630, we are going to have a very special half-hour report wrapping up our week in our town, Manchester. It really is a nice place to visit, and we didn't mention the golf course, which Denny got to visit yesterday. It's a beautiful course. Thanks, Bruce. We'll see you in a few minutes. All right. Well, it looks like we could be in for what weekend? Well, at least the beginnings of it. However, if we just have a little patience, I think our weekend will be sunny. Tonight may be showers and storms. We'll show you radar, and we'll take a look at our prospects to get wet on your 24-hour news source, KCRG-TV9. We need some rain in some areas. But we will, right? We certainly will. Yes. In fact, showers and thunderstorms are in the area right now. I'll be showing you WR-100 color radar in just a moment. Right now it's kind of a misty shot on the live shot from the Hawkeye. And this looking out past Interstate 380. And you can see just sort of a haze hanging out there. And indeed that's been the way it's been much of this day. Cloudy skies right now, and yes, some showers out there. Relative humidity 62%, barometric pressure falling. South winds of 10 miles an hour. And the right-wing pollen count from the University of Iowa College of Medicine is 584, which is into the discomfort zone. And our temperatures are like this. Cedar Rapids 80, 81 in Iowa City. Dubuque has 76, and in Waterloo it is 77. Color radar is on the 125-mile range right now. Here they are, showers, thunderstorms, kind of scattered activity. Heading out towards Marshalltown, some of the heavier showers, embedded thunder showers. And then there's a pretty good line here from Decorah all the way out to just north of Ames. All the activity is moving east at around 20 to 25 miles an hour. So some heavy showers, not severe weather we're talking about here, but could be one of those garden variety situations. Now here's high temperatures around the Spotters Network. Our town, Manchester, Maggie LaRue called in with a high of 80 there. John Ogle, Monona, a high of 78, 80 in Cedar Rapids, and Bob Steike in Iowa City had a high of 83. Thank you, Spotters. Our forecast tonight, showers, thunderstorms, are a good possibility. As a matter of fact, I'm beginning to think it's likely now for most of us to get some amount of moisture anyway. Southwest early winds, a low into the 60s overnight. Now, tomorrow we may wake up to some cloud cover with west-northwesterly winds in the afternoon, a high of 78, 84. I am looking for a clearing process to be underway throughout much of the day on Saturday. Then that heads us into a very, very nice Saturday night. I think partly cloudy to mostly clear skies, a low between 57 and 62 degrees. Here's a satellite loop. There you see that area of cloudiness out to the west. Now this has to do with a push of cooler, drier air against our moisture-laden air. I'll tell you, we had to get that moisture flowing up from the Gulf, and some has. And so consequently, some of the showers, thunderstorms, are rather large out to our west. So that area of cloud cover is right on top of us right now. It won't last a real long time, and that's going to get out of here quickly with this very frontal system. See that low pressure dragging along? That's just sort of a mechanism to bring out more and more of the moisture. Now that front getting out of the way, a high pressure moving in during the day tomorrow. This is cooler, cleaner, fresher air coming in. And then Sunday looks to be an absolutely glorious day. The high pressure will take over. We're going to be seeing one more cold front yet to zip through late Sunday into Monday, but that won't have much moisture to work with. It will reinforce a relatively cool weather pattern, a high on Sunday to about 82, 77 Monday, 81 Tuesday, and 84 on Wednesday. Not much chance for any kind of rain over the next five days, but at least we've had some recent rains, which helps, and we may have some tonight. Alright, thanks, Denny. You bet. Well, sports gets a little hairy today. It's known as the Mattingly mess. We'll get into that, and we'll also talk to a father-son baseball combo with a familiar name. Stay with us. I don't know, I have to say this whole thing I think is absolutely ridiculous. You had a haircut, didn't you? Yeah, I did get a haircut, but you know, nobody told me I had to either. You could play for the Yankees, Judy. Okay, not since the Beatles blew in with those long locks has the length of someone's hair made such news. But in the media market of the world, Don Mattingly's refusal to get a Yankee haircut has the Big Apple in a tizzy. Mattingly was benched yesterday because his hair covered his collar, and he was told he will not play until he gets a haircut. By the looks of it today, he did not visit the barber in the last 24 hours. I think he's overreacting. He shouldn't be that offended, but he's captain. It's just one of the things. He's been asked twice to get his haircut, he can get a cut. Well, actually, I think it's, you know, there's nothing wrong with getting your haircut while I fell asleep in a barber's chair today. This is what I'm trying to say. It's so ridiculous that I had to do something even more ridiculous to prove that what they're doing with Mattingly is ridiculous. The first gentleman talking was Gene Michaels, the GM. Sounds like a story for current affair to me. While the Yankees are scheduled to host the Chicago White Sox tonight, the Cubs hosted the Phillies, and Luis Salazar put the exclamation point on a big first inning. It might be out of here. It could be. That is! The Cubs got 6-3 on Salazar's home run. In the second round, Rick Sutcliffe pitched 8. Gave up 5 hits, no watch, picked up his first win in his comeback attempt. 9 won the final as the Cubs move into third place. Have you noticed? There's a bevy of former major leaguers with sons following in their footsteps. That father-son baseball combination is also being played right out here in Cedar Rapids at Fed Stadium. On the field playing third base for the Cedar Rapids Reds, Keith Kessinger. In the stands, his father, Don Kessinger, a former standout shortstop for the Chicago Cubs. It's real. I get nervous. There's no question about it. I sit up there in the stands. I'm nervous because you know how much they want it. You know how hard they work and how badly they want it. So you just want it for them. It's nice to have him here. He's seen me play more than anyone else ever, so little things maybe other people can't see. He sees and tries to help me with. Did you watch him when he played? Well, I watched him. I don't remember very much. He went all the time, so I have no reason not to believe her. If ever there was a mutual admiration society, the Kessingers are it. Don is now the head baseball coach at Ole Miss. Keith Kessinger has his college degree and is now in his second year of pro ball. My brother plays in college and I play here, and he never pushed either one of us, but I mean, obviously we grew up in the locker room. We grew up on Wrigley Field playing, and you know, it was a natural way of life for us was to play baseball. Neither has an explanation for the great number of sons who are now in professional baseball, but they seem to be enjoying their current situation. There's maybe a little bit of pressure, because I don't want to let his name down. He would never feel that way, but I certainly don't want to do anything to, you know, he had a great career and I want to do everything I can to keep the name great. He's a great kid and it's just been fun watching him, and I'm glad he's having the opportunity to try this pro ball. It's what he really wanted to do. Don's wife Carolyn and Keith's wife Laura also at the stadium this past week watching him play. The Reds' club got a long home stand tonight with a game versus Peoria. Let's look at sports. So what do you think? Should Don Madderly get his haircut? I don't think there's anything outrageous about it, but if it's in his contract, he should get it cut. Yeah, yeah. We'll wait and see.
