The so called Emerald City Center would be the first of its kind to have a retractable roof. Q 13 Fox News reporter Darren Ditto is live at Pier 46, one of the proposed sites for the arena and Darren. What about this project is so unique? Laura, $1 billion in private money, not public funding would be used to build that brand new arena right here behind me at Pier 46. Investors say this new arena could bring in more money and more money to build that new arena. The new arena could bring a new NBA franchise to town. Mr Stern is not going to recognize us without a facility. Feast your eyes on the possible future of NHL hockey, NBA basketball and concerts in Seattle. Legendary Sonic downtown Freddie Brown and former Tacoma Rainier's general manager Dave Bean have formed B two ink to help finance and build the Emerald City Center. Bean says this is not a pipe dream. We're not going to be able to do that. We're going to be able to talk to investors. And of course, they've given us. Excellent feedback and in some instances commitment being believes the clay Bennett owned Sonics are good as gone and a new arena will mean a new team for Seattle. According to be to Pier 46 is the best option because of its location to quest and Safeco fields plus easy access to I five and Highway 99. Although the city has been considering the idea of building a new arena for the city, B two says they're ready. Quote Terminal 46 is leased to Honjian shipping through 2015. Honjian has an option to sign an additional 10 years. We have the port believe the best use for that property is as a container terminal, which creates jobs and economic growth for our trade dependent state. B two is also studying three other potential sites in Soto and at Seattle Center where Memorial Stadium is now Stephen Pye with save the city's arena is still the best option. Well, my gut feeling is is that we're going to end up keeping the same team we have, and we're going to end up with a remodel key arena with that potential $300 million deal that includes private and public money for key arena still on the table until April 10th. Seattle Mayor Greg Nichols said quote. Key arena is our region's sports and entertainment facility. We remain focused on improving key arena so that it will remain the best place to be for the next three years. We're going to have to wait and see what happens. We'll see. Coming up on April 17th, the NBA Board of Governors will vote on whether the Sonics can move to Oklahoma City Live in Seattle tonight. Darren Gito Q 13 Fox News are different. So even if this group feels like the Sonics and clay Bennett are out of here, the issue is still there about key arena and its lease. What is the situation now with that? Laura That fight is still on the table. We'll see what happens in the next few days. The Pan Am team is expected to be forced to stay a key arena until 2010. Laura still a messy issue. All right. Thanks, Darren. Tonight we know the name of the 18 year old driver who was killed in a police chase in Snohomish County. Officers say they tried to pull Randall Pravrasky over Friday night on Westwick Road, but he wouldn't stop. His car flew off the road and slammed into a tree. His friends started a roadside crash. The driver was killed in a police chase in Snohomish County. Deputy is on paid leave while officials investigate the crash. A pretty strange crash in Seattle today nearly stumped rescue workers too. It was an out of control truck that careened into a park station wagon, sending that smashing into an apartment building. And yeah, it was quite a shock for one resident. They're pretty big windows and it just broke the top half and hit the part above my window. So there's a big dent in the wall now. I guess the people above me got their window broken, too. So. Yeah, I guess it's pretty much the same. Yeah, I guess the people above me got their window broken, too. So yeah, ever since I lived here, I always that was one of my big fears that that would happen one day. Met a car would come through the window. Yeah, that you can laugh about it. Well, everyone in the building is okay, although it took a while for tow truck drivers to figure out how to get the car out of there. A man and woman in the truck were slightly hurt. Italy's highest court ruled today that I'm out of stocks her ex boyfriend and another suspect Stay locked up while authorities investigate the murder of Knox's roommate last November. Knox and the two other suspects have not been formally charged, but the court ruled the three could be held for up to a year while the case is investigated tonight, victims of domestic violence have a Governor Chris Gregoire today signed the Grego Act into law. Now the bill makes it easier to serve protection orders by mail or publication. It will keep courts from forcing domestic violence victims to repeatedly try to serve the orders in person. Gregoire choked back tears at the somber signing ceremony. I want to thank the sponsors for bringing forth this important legislation. I particularly want to thank the family and ask God to bless them. Thank you. Thank you. The bill is named after Rebecca Grego, the UW worker gunned down by her ex-boyfriend on campus one year ago. Her mother and sister were at today's signing. Jonathan Rowan tracked Grego to her office and shot her. He then killed himself. She had previously unsuccessfully attempted to serve him with a protection order. Quite an emotional day. Well tonight, one dog is dead. Another is recovering and police and anacortes are looking for their owner and the person who shot them. Both dogs were shot with a large handgun at Heartlake Park over the weekend. The purebred female boxer in this picture was shot in the back but she should recover. A male boxer, however, was found dead Saturday night. He was shot in the head. Police say both dogs were gentle and well-groomed but didn't have collars or ID on them. If you know anything about the owners or the shootings, call anacortes police. Tonight, the FBI says the parachute found buried in a rural area of Clark County is not connected to the plane hijacker, D.B. Cooper. Federal authorities made the announcement today after investigating the area where the parachute was found. They also spoke with parachute experts. Cooper is infamous for jumping out of a Northwest Orient passenger jet with $200,000 in ransom in 1971. Some of the cash has been recovered but no one knows what happened to Cooper. We got some pretty good news tonight for some 800 Bothell Elementary school kids and their parents. They won't have to change schools next year after all. The North Shore School District was looking to close Wooden Elementary School to help fix a $3.4 million budget shortfall but the school board voted last night to put those plans on hold. The district says it didn't have enough time to properly analyze the closure or how it would affect students and families. The district still needs to figure out how to save them money so the proposal to close Wooden could come back next year. Oh, what a great night. I'm not talking about any snowstorms for a change. Let's get out there and show you what's going on. We are talking about a cool night tonight, a crisp night, especially in the overnight hours. You can see our temperatures aren't too bad. We're seeing the 40s throughout the metro area. It does get cold around Port Angeles as you get into the overnight hours as you'll be sub-freezing in many locations, especially in the North Interior. But we are talking about a pretty, just kind of a, well, cloud-free night, rain-free night. How does that sound? This is what's next when you're getting out there for tomorrow morning. This would be the issue, perhaps a little fog or you'd have to use your ice scrapers in the morning and perhaps some black ice on just some of the overpasses. But really, you're talking about just nice sunshine once again. Beautiful weather coming your way. I'll tell you all about it in just a few minutes. All right. Shot by terrorists, this Iraqi boy undergoes surgery in a local hospital. How he's recovering tonight and the next battle he faces as a local family fights to keep him in their care. That Iraqi boy shot by terrorists is getting a new look at Children's Hospital, who Morijota has surgery today to repair scarring from the attack. Q13 Fox News reporter Jennifer Kaballa joins us now with how the surgery went. Hamoudi was moved from the ICU to a regular room about two hours ago. And both his doctor and his host parents say the surgery went really well. Soon Hamoudi Jota Smith will be back zooming through life. I like to play with cars. And when he does, he'll look a lot different. He underwent surgery today to repair his injured face. We were able to remove all the skin grafts and take all the normal skin like this and move it around to give him better coverage of the underlying skeleton. The bones of his face were shattered when Hamoudi was only a toddler. His family stumbled onto a group of terrorists in Iraq who shot him. He was brought to the United States for surgery by the relief agency Healing the Children. When you have such a devastating injury, you can't do it in one operation. Last year, Dr. Gross was able to rebuild the bone in his face. And although he looked better, people asked a lot of questions. There's cruel people out there that will say things to us. What happened to your son's face right in front of him? He can't hear. This latest surgery smoothed out the bumps in his skin and nose. I think that this is going to just be another step towards getting him back to looking like a regular five-year-old. Hamoudi will need more surgeries to help his growing face, but he may not get them. His special visa from Healing the Children runs out in May. The family is applying for asylum so Hamoudi can stay here where his future is bright. If he went back to Iraq, it would be bleak. His family has said that they want him to stay here because they know if he goes back to Iraq, he doesn't have a life. Blind people just don't have lives there, unfortunately. It's a cultural thing. They basically either hide him away in the house or kick him to the curb, which is not a good thing. And this kid's got a boatload of potential. And our hopes are that he will be able to be an independent man, has good education, a good job, have a wife and a family. That's our goals for him, and they're achievable. Hamoudi's host parents are working with an immigration attorney to try and get him asylum. As long as his case is pending, he can stay here and get treatment. And they're hoping that he'll be able to stay here permanently. Jennifer Kaballa, Q13, Fox News. Tonight, our state has one of the toughest toy safety laws in the nation. Governor Gregoire signed into law the controversial bill banning toxic chemicals in toys, such as lead. Some toy makers and sellers oppose the law, saying the costs of complying with the testing requirements would put them out of business. Gregoire vetoed two sections of the measure, including a too strict timeline for compliance and another because of unclear language. I believe that with what we've started and what I've said by way of message in the veto today, that we're not going to see anybody leave or throw up their hands, that they're going to come work with us to get the job done. The governor also opened the door for other changes to be made to the law over the next year. The new legislation goes into effect July 1 of next year. You've got two young kids. Yeah. That's got to be scary stuff for you guys, too, huh? Oh, yeah, definitely. Yeah, it's just hearing about all this and how to pick it out. We'll be playing outside this week for sure. Oh, my goodness. How nice has this change been? I'm just so excited about it, to get outside and enjoy that beautiful sunshine that we saw out there today. And you know, we went, what, seven days in a row of snow in the lowlands. Now we're going to go possibly seven days with sun. How does that sound? I think that's a good trade. And yeah, it's not an April Fool's. All right, temperatures tonight, a nice 42. I like to take that in the Seattle area. You can see that we are completely dry on our live double Doppler. We are not expecting any rain for tonight. And in fact, tonight will just be one of those pretty pleasant nights. And considering where we were last night this time, we had the snow and temperatures were freezing. Tonight this time, we're sitting at more like in the 40s. All right, so let's get out there and talk a little bit about what's going on. Satellite picture shows it all. We're under the influences of this big high pressure. High pressure, remember, is just like a mountain. It blocks anything from coming your direction. So it pushes everything into California. It pushes everything into BC. And what we're left with is just this nice sunshine that we've been seeing for today. OK, so tomorrow, the situation, of course, can be cold in the morning, perhaps a little patchy fog, sloshing about, and overnight temperatures. Cold enough to use the ice scraper for your morning commute. But it's not going to be a hard freeze. So I'm not expecting any major areas of black ice that we saw this morning out there. Everett, you're going to get up to 48, so sunshine right away. And it's going to end up being a nice lunch hour there. So plan ahead for some sunshine across the area. And a high tomorrow, very nice, 51 degrees. Remember, it wasn't just a couple days ago that we were sitting in the low 40s for daytime highs with all that snow around. 25 in Olympia, so it is going to be cold tonight. Perhaps just a few little areas of patchy black ice. Just watch it in the early morning commute. As soon as that sun pops up and gets up for about an hour, we'll be OK. In fact, you're at lunch temperature sitting at 44 for Tacoma. I like to see that. And here you go for tomorrow's afternoon high, 55 degrees. Doesn't that sound nice? Remember, we were about 40 degrees for a high not too long ago. And I've got even warmer weather coming for the south sound here over the next couple of days, or perhaps around 60. All right, Seattle. You'll be at 33 degrees. East Sideers, you'll be at around 30 degrees for Issaquah. So expect a little bit of that just cold early morning. Now remember, this is just right about 6, 630 in the morning. So if you make it to 8 o'clock, no problems. You're going right up into the 40s. It'll end up being fantastic. 46 for your lunch temperature in Seattle. I like to see that. And you're going to see a lot of blue sky. You'll see that fair weather cumulus, just like we saw out there today. And high on the East Side, 55 degrees. That is just right. I like to see that. Here's your forecast for the next several days. Now we mentioned all the snow we had at the end of March. But here we go. April's looking nice. We've got a lot of sunshine. The only, I don't even want to really call it a worry. But let's just say you happen to have a 7 AM flight. You might be seeing a little bit of fog in the early morning hours. You might have to use the ice scraper for your car. But other than that, I mean, we're talking one hour out of the 24 hours tomorrow, being even questionable. Because the rest of the time looks great. Don't even talk about that. There you go. One hour 24 hours. Just talk about the good stuff. 23 hours will be great. How's that? I got some decent weather, a little bit of shower activity for the coast and mountains. Perhaps this weekend, maybe if you're camping on Saturday. But really, this is nice. I mean, you've got to remember what we just went through. I'll take it. A lot of sunshine. Good sleeping weather, too. All right. Thanks, Walter. Remember, you can now get local weather information anytime on the new Q13 Fox First forecast channel. the garbage beat And when you're up before the rooster you do see a lot of weird things that early in the morning in the wee hours So why not watch out for shady characters as well looking to store up trouble in your neighborhood Today nearly 100 trash collectors on the east side joined the waste management neighborhood safety and crime prevention program Drivers are learning how to spot, report and handle a suspicious situation It's just a matter of seeing things that are out of place Chris Spillsbury says these drivers are not being trained to become police officers They don't want them jumping in trying to stop a crime in progress Instead they're being taught some of the finer points of law enforcement How to pay attention to the small details You might not be thinking about the license plate number It's more sets of eyes out there to see what's going on in our community Now this idea of community policing is nothing new to these drivers In fact, many have been helping dispatchers for years Now they're receiving this formal training And when you think about it, who better to keep an eye on all of the dark nooks and crannies in your neighborhood Areas where criminals and Canadian judges To some medical news now, last fall we heard a lot about staff infections, especially the drug resistant kind like MRSA It's a problem that's not going away, in fact staff is now the leading cause of infections after surgery But in tonight's wellness report, a new vaccine that might be the breakthrough we need When Barbara Stout found out she needed open heart surgery, she started to worry about getting a staff infection It was a big, big worry on my mind because once you've had that experience it's not fun to go through Two years ago Barbara spent six days in the hospital battling staff in an incision she had from hernia surgery This time her heart surgeon asked her if she'd like to take part in a study of the first vaccine for staff The shot includes protection against MRSA, the drug resistant staff The vaccine allows you to kind of pump up your immune system before an operation, develop a high level of antibodies And at least in animals it really has a dramatic impact The vaccine is the first being tested in heart surgery patients They and others who are sick and hospitalized are most vulnerable to severe staff infections and death So Dr. Allen says if the vaccine proves safe and effective, it might also be given to healthy people Since they're increasingly at risk for MRSA This may ultimately be something that just like your mumps, measles, rubella or tetanus, you may get a staff vaccine Some patients in the study get the real vaccine, others a placebo Barbara doesn't know what she got Her heart surgery was more than two weeks ago Real well, no infection, so I'm praying that I got the good stuff and everything's just going to work out fine Patients in the study get the vaccine two weeks before surgery to give them time to build up immunity to staff Research is going to take at least 18 months before the federal approval process can begin But in the meantime, we've got more information on staff infections and tips for preventing them on our website Q13Fox.com, just click on the wellness report at the bottom of the page David? From the Quest Sports Desk, this is View It Up Sports. It was a 1-1 game going into the eighth inning, and then things just got nuts. Let's pick it up with the Rangers and the Mariners. Felix Hernandez strong today. Seven innings, gave up just six hits. The pretty play here on the fourth. Just one earned run in three case to the eighth. It's 3-1 Texas. Each year it was 3 for 4. It boots it. Charlton Jimerson is in. It's 3-3. Wild Bits, they'll take it. Unieski Betancourt, get down with a head-first slide for three Mariners. But to the ninth, with the man on. JJ puts, uh-oh, but Josh Hamilton, remember the name, this kid is dangerous. Two run shot, done. Texas is the winner, 5-4. Yankees, Jays, give me some New York music for the opener out there in Gotham City. Mielke Cabrera up against the wall with a pretty catch. You can now come to your left, or is that to your right? That's to your right, young fella. Yankees are your winners. They take care of the Jays. KISW's Double R, he does work for us from time to time on Q&Up Sports. Matter of fact, here's a tease. It's coming up on Sunday. Battling former Mariner John Olerud in a wiffle ball contest. You don't want to miss that. Earlier today on his radio show, he had Jose Kinseko. And Kinseko has taken verbal shots at Kurt Schelling. Play it, guys. If you listen to him talk now, he's so incredibly disrespectful to people, first off. Secondly, if you don't agree with him, the things his line of talking is just, it's like a five-year-old. He believes he's impeccable now when it comes to talking about the subject. I can tell you something. If I sound like a five-year-old, he sounds like a one-year-old because his vocabulary is terrible. Number two, this guy's the biggest hypocrite, the biggest liar, the biggest exaggerator. I mean, Kurt Schelling is a pathetic human being. Wow. Now, Jose, beyond him just being a... He was even reprimanded in Congress by the congressman because his testimony was so bad and so hypocritical. It was ridiculous. So do you think that he's been juicing? Kurt Schelling? Yeah. I don't know anything about Kurt Schelling. I just think he's a fool. Ouch. Alex Rodriguez. Here's a factoid for you. He's the highest-paid player in the majors, pulling down $28 million annually. That's more than the Florida Marlins' entire roster at 21.8 mil. Spring football starts for the University of Washington Husky football team coming up on Thursday. Jake Locker will be there, but this summer, he's playing baseball. For more on that, here's Aaron. Now starting in center field, Husky quarterback Jake Locker. That's what they'll be announcing this summer at Bellingham's Joe Martin Stadium, as Locker plans to play sparingly for the Bellingham Bells of the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League. It's something that will make my life more enjoyable this summer, I feel, and I don't want to pass up that opportunity. I know that he's a competitor. He misses it a little bit. And as long as it doesn't interfere with our workouts this summer that are critical, I have no problem with that. And so Locker, who played 16 years of baseball, will play when football commitments aren't in the way. Despite Coach Willingham's blessing, football is still top priority. You don't know how many games it's going to be, but it sounds like it's a very minimal number of games. But I do know this. I do know Jake is highly motivated to be a great football player. Throughout the recruiting process, he was always very supportive of me. And if I wanted to play two sports when I first got here, so I knew that if I, you know, to approach him, he was going to be supportive of me and stand next to me in whatever decision I made. As for concerns about him getting hurt... I mean, he can get hurt walking to class. He can get hurt driving up to Ferndale to see his mom and dad on a weekend. So I can't guarantee that he wouldn't get hurt, but I can guarantee he's not going to pitch. He's not going to change his throwing motion, and that would not be good. One final note, Bellevue High alums E.J. Savannah and J.R. Hastie will not participate in spring football when it begins on Thursday. According to Coach Willingham, both are academically eligible and can be back potentially at any time. However, the disciplinary actions are yet one more setback to Hastie, who has yet to see any significant time in the Husky backfield. From Husky Stadium, Aaron Levine, Cue It Up Sports. T-Birds in action tonight, game seven of the WHL playoffs. That's Bud Holloway will end up with a scrap and a goal in front. T-Birds with a one-nothing advantage. They go out in front two-nothing. When Ian McKenzie will wind up from the slot and knock it home, they win it 4-2. They advance to the Western Conference semis when they meet Tri-City Americans. And Carl, you were telling me there was a huge brawl. Remember that back in the day? Carl, one of my operators, this guy you can't see on camera, remember it was that dangerous brawl between those two teams about eight years ago. They'll be reunited once again in the Western Conference playoffs. All right, what are you guys going to be doing when you're 60? We're going to show you what that is. Will you be in the ring? Well, we'll tell you about it. This guy does not look like the 6-0, but he is, and we'll tell you what he's all about. We'll come back and see it up. All right, the gentleman's name is Sal Mamby, and he's 60 years of age. The last time he boxed was back in the 1960s, and he's, well, he's getting after it again. We'll show you the gentleman we're talking about. That is him working out on the heavybacks. Sal Mamby, former light heavyweight champion, making a comeback. That's right, at the tender age of 60. We bring up the grainy black and white video. And once again, remind you that he started fighting back in the 60s. And look at that. Is there like an age group he's going to be fighting in, or is he? Yeah. Over going 50 plus? He's not going to be fair. I don't know, but I think I want to take up boxing. My gosh, I think that's a fountain of youth. That's great. Dan, thank you. All right, so speaking of looking great, the weather looking great. A little frosty really early in the morning, just for basically that one hour just before sunrise or right around sunrise. A little bit of patchy fog for the next couple of days, but really you're just talking about beautiful sunshine, looking fantastic. And on Thursday we can be seeing a few highs close to 60 in the south, south, and east side. This is amazing, considering the switch we made from last week to this week, or I guess yesterday, March to now, looking good. And we do have just a few little showers along the coast and mountains this weekend. But Seattle area, metro area, you're going to see ample sunshine for almost a whole week, which is pretty sweet. April's up. Great stuff. Thanks, Bob. But you can get the latest news, weather, and traffic tomorrow morning with Mark, Maria, Lily, MJ, and Adam.
