North Star aerospace is expanding and a new grant will help Lake Superior College train their new employees North Star aerospace currently has 115 employees but plans to expand to 300 in the next three years we have to develop programs to make sure we have skilled workers for today and in the future used to be when educators took care of that but now industry has to take care of North Star aerospace partnered with Lake Superior College to get a $200,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development the money will go towards training 40 new employees this fall and for expanded training for current workers with the 4th of July just a couple weekends away fireworks sales stands are popping up throughout the region six years ago Minnesota laws were revised to allow people a wider variety of legal fireworks people in Minnesota may now purchase fireworks that are non explosive and non aerial that means you can now buy sparklers snakes and tubes that emit sparks but firecrackers cherry bombs and bottle rockets are still illegal in Minnesota it's important to point out though that just because some of these fireworks are legal it doesn't mean they're any safer than they used to be Brenda Greenlee sells fireworks in Duluth and has some advice for 4th of July fireworks fanatics read the label most of them say light and stand back you know so get out of the way light it and get out of the way you know don't don't fool around with them play with fire you're bound to get burnt so according to Minnesota law you have to be 18 to buy any sort of fireworks Wisconsin has many of the same regulations one thing in the country experiencing the opposite of inflation is the price of homes these inflated costs have led to a record number of foreclosures and the people losing their homes aren't the only ones suffering as Chris Jansing reports at furry tail farm outside of Seattle a heartbreaking phenomenon is playing out foreclosure foreclosure foreclosure pets given up by owners who have lost their homes to foreclosure you take as many as you can and you do the best you can and you cry yourself to sleep every night over the ones you couldn't take all right guys now no pause just mouths in 30 years of rescuing Susanna Sloan has never experienced anything like this not just dogs and cats but horses pigs goats so many she has to turn away three out of four animals it is a national tragedy come on take come on Melia Kaplan has been rescuing animals for 15 years in California now she's opened a hotline for homeowners facing foreclosure we got a call from a man who was crying on the phone he said my dog is so good and he knows how to sit and he knows how to give you his paw please don't make me take him to shelter shelters have been inundated where foreclosure rates are high from Florida to Michigan Minnesota Colorado Arizona to California owner surrender in May the number of animals turned into Los Angeles City shelters jumped 30% pets seem to be the silent victims of this whole economic downturn and most of the surrendered animals aren't young and fuzzy they're older making it unlikely they'll get adopted the harsh reality is as more animals come in more animals have to be put down now Peyton is one of the lucky ones he's being trained as potentially a bomb sniffing dog but it shelters across the country euthanasia rates are going up which is one reason why the furry tail farm is so attractive it's a no-kill shelter Joe Paul Hamas hopes someday to reclaim his dogs Bailey and it's just not the animals but you're giving up that part of your life with 261,000 homes in closure in May alone a dog's life is suddenly much more tenuous bye-bye Chris Jansing NBC News Los Angeles here in Duluth more than 2,000 animals become homeless each year spending weeks or even months in the city's currently overcrowded animal shelter a major condominium complex opened its doors to the public tonight the Beacon Point luxury resort held its grand opening inviting the public to have a look inside the three buildings complex both views of Lake Superior which managing resident Scott Utley says is the resort's greatest asset it's the best of both worlds because it's a North Shore resort right on the water but in the city so people can have you know just like being up on North Shore but have all the amenities of the city as well one of Beacon Point's owners Wells McGriffin says he hopes that the resort becomes a premier vacation destination just excited to be able to share with the public now and be able to open it up for people to come and stay with us and also offer these beautiful condos for sale the resort took three years to build and a majority of the condo units were sold two years ago still to come on the Northland's news center will show you what a new government report has to say about the future of oil prices plus we'll tell you about a ruling by the Supreme Court that affects victims of the Exxon Valdez oil disaster stay with us hot as can be in the in the studio and billboard our director had come down and he moved that big door open about this far to let in some air because there's no air circulated so then he you know runs back upstairs fires up the camera and I'm live and this guy comes in through the sliding glass doors it's dark outside so he comes in squeezes in through the sliding glass doors takes a look at me and walks through the studio looking around and meanwhile I'm live I'm continuing to talk and then and nobody knew he was there I was all alone in the studio comes over and he puts his face in front of the camera and he looks like this in the camera first time I direct you know all the time I'm reading I don't know what to do I'm just continuing with the show I hear this he runs down the stairs as fast as he can takes hold of the guy meanwhile I keep reading takes hold of the guy by the arm takes him back up I walks out peacefully back out puts out the door and slides the door goes back upstairs we finish the show from the Northlands News Center this is news center at 10 with Michelle Lee George Kessler Tom Hansen and special IT reports from Barbara Riles you're watching NBC 6 and this is news center at 10 there was a bit of good news today on gasoline the price of oil fell a few bucks but the government's long-term forecast is also out today and it projects further increases at the pump Steve Handelsman reports from Washington the good news is demand for gasoline fell last week so oil prices dropped 3% today but the forecast is they're headed back up big time and we really are in an oil shock a top expert told Congress fuel wholesalers are paying more because they're afraid we're running short and I think there is a shortage psychology today in the financial markets that's widespread and has grown as prices have gone up but running short of oil is likely in the next decades a prediction today that China and India will drive world demand up 50% by 2028 50% more demand for oil that could lead to a lot more global warming and eventually the government's chief oil forecaster predicted today more oil production we do think that over the next five to ten years the the high prices will bring on new supplies that should put downward pressure on price five to ten years John McCain wants more drilling and new nuclear plants this was today we must deal with the here and now and assure affordable fuel for America by producing more of it ourselves Barack Obama says new plants and drilling offshore would not deal with the here and now their medium term he says a better move in that timeframe would be to cut consumption with higher tech cars and power plants Democrats and Republicans up here dueled again over what to do in the race for the White House energy could be an even bigger issue after today's bleak predictions I'm Steve Handelsman NBC News Capitol Hill the average price of oil slid today to 134 dollars a barrel a Minneapolis attorney who represented thousands of Alaskans in the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster says he's shocked by Wednesday's Supreme Court ruling the Supreme Court cut the 2.5 billion dollar punitive damages award for the worst oil spill in US history to 500 million dollars Justice David Sutter wrote for the court that punitive damages may not exceed what the company already paid to compensate victims for economic losses the Minneapolis law firm of Fagery and Benson represented the single largest group of the roughly 32,000 plaintiffs in the case the lead trial attorney in the case Brian O'Neill says now those Alaskans won't get the money they deserve George is in next with our forecast and a look at our chance for rain over the next few days stay tuned meteorologist George Gensler is certified by the American Meteorological Society scattered rain showers over the next few days yep we had well we had some around tonight they're for the most part settled down there there might be a sprinkle left and that's it but once the sun's down shuts off the heating and the fronts through and then we get a nice little break tomorrow but then starting tomorrow night into Friday the activity starts up again oh well hey otherwise I get bored yeah we gotta have something to do take a look here's the satellite and radar combination again the storms that we had earlier have for the most part snuffed it as my delightful Welsh mother would say but the the other storms are already gathering down in the southwestern part of South Dakota but that little bubble of high pressure that's covering most of the Dakotas I believe is our future and we are gonna have ourselves a very nice Thursday the humidity will be a little bit less the temperatures will be slightly cooler and I think there will be a lot of smiles around the Northland especially on the faces those visitors who are now beginning to flood into town look at these readings across the region 68 now International Falls and Ely 61 Silver Bay 63 in Grand Marais little influence from the lake there meanwhile to the south 71 in Hayward they're balmy and almost a little hot this afternoon but their temperatures have come back a little bit 64 and Aiken 72 though right now in Grand Rapids this what we have the front has eased on by earlier today we had winds out of the southwest and even at times a little bit out of the southeast right along the North Shore which kept temperatures cooler for a time but they now flopped over into the west although the funny thing is that our temperatures are doing this routine downtown because when the winds are strong enough to push the lake air out when the winds slacken off then the lake air flows back in so we've seen our temperatures porpoising over the last few hours down in Canal Park it's 55 you can see in the corner your screen at this point but it was up to 70 some just an hour ago seven miles an hour due west seven miles an hour northwest inhibiting a sure indicator that the front is through and there is an irony there that we have a warm or a cold front rather going through and causing warmer temperatures just a little something to chew on there as you head to sleep tonight down to the south it is hot but it's not terrible it's exactly where it should be in fact the entire nation is really enjoying very normal weather and the reason why is because the jet streams going straight from west to east which means that you don't have anything extraordinary on either side of it which is fine you don't have really cold you don't have really warm and you don't have huge storm systems either you need the jet stream to really be bent out of whack to get those massive rain producers it's not to say we don't have any activity out there we do some very heavy showers and thunderstorms breaking out across Iowa the last place on earth that needs them also beginning to see them collect themselves in the foothills of the Rockies there's an area of energy just moving on to the west coast that will collect this and the whole mass will get on together and start heading for us on Friday there's that batch of storms roaring now through the eastern parts of Iowa that'll head off into Illinois corn country is going to take another hit they do not need to see any more rainfall it's decidedly not good for the crops to get too much moisture on Friday that storm I was discussing will be wrapping itself up cooler air coming in behind it and certainly the weekend is going to be on the chilly side we'll preview that for you when we come back right after this when you can look back 10 20 even 30 years at the history of our community well that experience helps us put our stories in the perspective experience means not wasting my viewers time it means telling the audience stories that serve their interests needs and concerns experience means having seen these storms before weather repeats just like history they have storm cracks and patterns and the first time they'll fool you but the next ten times you'll be able to nail them here's how the pattern is gonna look over the weekend the storm system will depart our region on Saturday but the circulation behind it pushing the jet stream down a little bit out of whack so we will see cooler than normal temperatures pushing through the Midwest while we see the hot temperatures bubbling up in the areas in the Intermountain West let's put it into some numbers overnight any showers that are left over will quickly dissipate temperatures getting into the fifties along the range 60 or thereabouts in the twin ports for tomorrow nice day north to northwesterly winds five to 15 miles an hour highs mid to upper seventies could be a few lower eighties but less humidity than we had today which will in general make it quite comfortable looking ahead showers and thunderstorms will be pretty persistent Friday into Friday night then linger Saturday and Sunday biggest news will be readings up to 20 degrees colder than they have been over the last couple of days but it's not a return to our cold spring I don't think the chilliness is going to last Barbara thanks very much George coming up next we'll show you if the twins were able to continue their winning streak and we'll show you if the Huskies had better luck at home than they've had on the road marks in next is sports it's our passion our mission our commitment our pledge our promise bc6 the first in the know with news center notifier get breaking news severe weather Tom Hanson is off this evening Mark Lang's filling in welcome so you were watching the twins up to the last minute in their head. I was watching as late as I possibly could they're up right now with seven straight wins the Minnesota twins are the hottest team in baseball after sweeps of Arizona and Washington the twins look to keep their interleague role going against the Padres tonight on the West Coast there's a late start out there in San Diego Padres got going early though Scott Harrison with a double down the left field line Michael Barrett would come in to score to give the Padres a three to nothing lead in the second inning but the twins not to be outdone Joe Joe Mower double deep to left field Carlos Gomez and Alexi Casilla would come around the score tying it up at three in the third inning jump to the top of the fourth same score Brendan Harris is gonna change all that five to three Harris gives the twins a two run lead and that's where we stand five to three twins in the fifth the Brew crew looking for a sweep today against the Atlanta Braves that's off Ricky Weeks doubles to left here Mike Rivera would come around the score to give the Brewers a two to nothing lead he was safe trust me on that one pick it up in the bottom of the third now Kelly Johnson there's a double to deep right field this one will get off the wall Jorge Campino and Gregor Blanco would score for the Braves game tied at two one more time Gregor Blanco singles to the right under the glove of Weeks Brandon Jones takes the scores giving the Braves a three to two lead and the Brewers fall four to two your final score Northwoods League the Huskies taking on lacrosse looking for the split offense is hard to come by for the Huskies Andrew Durden hits a home run maybe not they're gonna call it back in the game stays one nothing lacrosse in the second lacrosse that's a grand slam right there Cory Vaughn with the grand slam home run to give the Loggers a five nothing lead they would hang on to the 12 to 3 victory the women's US Open starts tomorrow at Interlaken in Edina among the field will be one of the all time greats of women's golf Annika Sorenstam this will be her last US Open as Sorenstam will retire at the end of this season I think the setup is superb and it is a true test again I mean I know if it really favors long hitters but I would say it favors smart players the 2008 dirt track season is in full swing and every track has unique sights and sounds most unique maybe the track announcers themselves Freddie Frand has been an announcer in the Northland for over 30 years that's this week's in the pit when you go to a racetrack there are certain constants that you can always rely on whether it's that familiar roar of the engines or the dirt and mud being thrown into the crowd if you're at the Grand Rapids or hibbing tracks one sound you expect to hear is the voice of track announcer Freddie Frand Frand is something of a legend in local racing and that's something that comes with experience I've been here at the Grand Rapids Speedway for 30 years off and on and then at the Grand Rapids Hibbing Speedway for way over 30 years and I quit proctor three years ago I had 32 years in there when I let that one go so I've been around for a while Freddie has been around at a number of tracks for a number of years and Freddie has been coming here as long as I've been coming here at least 20 years Freddie brings a lot of experience and a lot of know-how of the drivers the families of the drivers and people expect to hear Freddie on the loud speaker so he is definitely an asset to our track we really enjoy Freddie does a great job always here and always in a good mood everyone enjoys a friend announced race maybe the drivers most of all Freddie Fran is just tremendous he's been announcing since I was a kid he's the only announcer I ever ever remember and I don't think there's anybody better than him anywhere he's personable he really loves what he does he doesn't do it for the money certainly and I think he enjoys this racing as much as anybody out here I'm mark Lang for in the pit and finally it's Wednesday which of course means it's time to check out another fishing with friends photo this one comes from Teris Lenzic of Duluth he caught this 30 inch walleye in Canada unlock dealt death in the locks last weekend quite a good-looking fish yeah that's a that's a big fish of course now if you have a big catch like that and you'd like to show it off on the air send it to us at fishing with friends at Northlands new center comm and terrorists nice catch we'll be right back no other TV station in the Northland gives you an hour and a half of local news in the evening starting at 5 on NBC 6 get your first look at all the day's big stories and at 530 on CBS 3 we'll have continuing coverage of the day's events and we'll bring you more stories that will impact you your family and your community and at 6 on NBC 6 we'll have the latest developments and more breaking news as it happens an hour and a half of local evening news that's just one of the ways the Northlands news center gives you more experience near perfect day tomorrow huh I think so well I'm not in the business of guarantees that is merely begging for karma no kidding but I do think tomorrow is gonna be a fine day temperatures right around 80 degrees it will have a pleasant little breeze out of the northwest as long as the breeze stays strong none of the lake air will get into the downtown area so all the tourists will be happy not be surprised by our cool conditions there is a chance at least of some clouds showing up late in the day could be some showers and thunderstorms overnight and especially during the day on Friday than Saturday and Sunday significantly cooler than it has been with some lingering showers I don't believe it is going to be a built-in arc weekend but perhaps not a chamber of commerce weekend either hmm all right thanks George and that's our show for tonight the tonight shows next remember you can see the news anytime anywhere on Northlands news center comm thanks for joining us have a good night everybody you're watching my nine KBJ are digital channel six point two oh
