A cowboy gets the right of his life doing a rodeo in Idaho. He's tossed around like a rag doll. We'll tell you what kind of shape he's in. And a kayaker finds a body along the Kern River. We'll tell you if it's one of three oiled out folks missing for two weeks. Next on Fox News at 10. You're watching KBFX-Fox 58. This is Fox News at 10. Good evening everyone and thanks for joining us. I'm Nicole Meyer. And I'm Ralph Bailey topping our news at 10. Well at least some of the waiting and wondering is over for family and friends of a missing trio from Oildale. A kayaker found the body of one of the three along the Kern River this afternoon. Authorities confirm the body is that of 33 year old Brett Schaefer. He's shown here with his seven year old daughter Michaela and his 18 year old nephew Joshua Patton. The three had been missing since the 4th of July. Crews had searched the river near Stockdale Highway and Buena Vista Road where Schaefer's truck was spotted. Now getting the body out of the river was no easy task for the Sheriff's search and rescue team. At some points today the water level suddenly dropped and rescuers had to make their way across the mud which is like quicksand. Jose Gaspar was at today's search and has that story. Jose? Nicole, instead of being able to simply pull the body out of the water in a matter of minutes, instead it took hours for search and rescue to finally make it out of the river. It was a couple of people in a kayak which found the body in the Kern River shortly before 1 o'clock this afternoon and search and rescue teams then set out to retrieve it. We put our boats in the water and then about probably a quarter mile over my left shoulder in the main river channel we discovered a body that had been lodged underneath a log in that area. The body is identified as 33 year old Brett Allen Schaefer of Oildale. Two weeks ago on July 4th Schaefer along with a 7 year old daughter Michaela and 18 year old nephew disappeared. Authorities suspect they all drowned in the Kern River. Schaefer's truck was found at Stockdale in Buena Vista right along the Kern River. And now Schaefer's body is the first to surface about three miles downstream from the Stockdale Bridge. But it was no easy task for search and rescue as the river here is shallow at some points. And then once you get into the river channel and then down to where the body was located it was like say wedged underneath a log and it took a while to get it out from underneath there and then make sure that we had it secured enough to put it in the boat and take it downstream. The coroner's office is listing Schaefer's death as an accidental drowning with no signs of any foul play. The other two young people who disappeared including Schaefer's daughter and nephew have not yet been found. Back to you. Alright Jose thanks for that report. Meantime, serious officials say this kind of discovery could go on throughout the summer. Search and rescue teams now say approximately 200 bodies have been recovered from the river since a record began back in 1968. Now that does not include presumed drownings in which the bodies have not been recovered. Sheriff's officials say at least 10 victims remain missing dating back to 1986. Police are still trying to figure out why someone slashed the throat of a 17 year old and stabbed her 11 times last night. Marsha Ramirez found the victim in the 3100 block of Plans Road about 1030 last night. She ran to a friend's house to call 911. She also grabbed a blanket and held it across the victim's neck where most of the bleeding seemed to be. I was probably nervous because I've never had this happen before and just to walk up the street and you know see someone on the sidewalk you know if their throat slit it kind of scares you you know. The victim asked Ramirez to find her mom who showed up on the scene a few minutes later. Police took this man in for questioning last night but they say he is not a suspect and no one has been arrested. The victim remains in critical condition at Mercy Hospital. Police are not releasing her name. Well Nicole there seems to be no end in sight for the scorching heat we're feeling here in Kern County. But we're not alone. 108 people across the nation have died because of the heat since May. Carol Iovanna shows us how people from California to Texas are trying to survive the sweltering heat. Hot enough for you? Yes it'll do. From California...to Texas. I got dehydrated the first time I came out here to work. Had to sit in the shade for a while. This heat wave just won't let up. 16 states are baking under the unrelenting sun. More than 60 people are dead across the south and southwest since this weather pattern settled in in mid-May. It's absolutely dangerous. For Dallas it's been 13 days straight of 100 plus degrees. It was so hot in Austin that the rescue chopper couldn't even take off. And one paramedic crew ended up in the hospital themselves because of the dangerous weather. A farmer in Austin says enough is enough. We can't get a price for our crops that will allow us to stay in business. And imagine trying to go to summer school in this scorcher. Their attention span seems to be a little bit less focused. In Houston last night, devastation. At least two people were hurt when a tent collapsed at this nursery. Winds topped 50 miles an hour. Folks in the neighborhood say they think it was a tornado. Trees started flying everywhere. We ran inside a house. We got scared. And no good news. This stubborn heat wave isn't expected to go anywhere until at least next week. Carol Iovanna, Fox News. About 15,000 folks in Kern County have been diagnosed with hepatitis, but few know much about the disease that can be fatal. The Kern County Hepatitis Foundation held an information fair and barbecue at Jostrow Park today to spread the word. We found that a lot of folks don't know much about it. They get told they have it. They really don't know what it is, what to do about it or anything. So we've started support groups that we hold weekly meetings, try and inform the patients and the public, and do outreach programs. McGuire encourages anyone at risk of being infected with hepatitis to be tested. And in fact, some of the people most at risk of getting the disease are those who treat others. Shirley Hall, a public health care nurse in Kern County, says 5,000 health care officials die each year from hepatitis exposure. Cases in Kern County, I personally know of three. A physician I've worked with had hepatitis C, almost died, received a liver transplant. Just last week, an LVN that I work with was diagnosed with hepatitis C. And another registered nurse who is a personal friend who at once resided in Kern County contracted hepatitis D. Hall says cost keeps most facilities from providing safer equipment such as syringes with retractable needles. There are currently two bills in the U.S. Congress that would mandate training programs for nurses as well as review and require safer medical devices. Finding folks in favor of annexation in the Palm Olive area is almost like finding a needle in a haystack. A section of the Palm Olive area between Olive and Hagerman and Fruitvale and Coffee was annexed, and many residents there insist the city brought them in deceitfully. Today, the outspoken group held what they called a celebration of democracy in action. Residents say it's the process that has them so upset. People are concerned about many, many issues, but particularly being taken in without the opportunity to even vote on it. And we're standing up and saying, no, we just don't, we won't do that. Means on the city insists they did everything required by law to annex that area. Today's demonstration included a barbecue and yard sale, and residents say they'll conduct several of these community awareness events. Seems it's not over quite yet. Oh, those are some very determined people. Still ahead as Fox News at 10 continues after watching this video coming up, you might be surprised to learn the cowboy is actually all right after a pretty wild ride. We'll show it to you. And a section of downtown Kansas City is virtually leveled by a fire that could have been avoided. We'll explain why on Fox News at 10. At election time, the politicians are always telling us they're against taxes and for working people. Well, now they have a chance to prove it before the election. This tobacco tax some in Congress are talking about doesn't make any sense. How is more than half a trillion dollar tax increase on working people going to stop kids from smoking? Just more taxes for more big government. I'm going to remember this fall with the politicians do this. Contact your member of Congress. Tell them to oppose new tobacco taxes. The talk of the town. Congratulations, guys. Cheers. This is a big moment for me. I want to drink it in. Me too. Where's the bar? If at first you don't succeed, I'm not gonna leave your side until I see a little smile on that face. Cry cry again. I really love your show. And I was just wondering, would you like to have a drink with me? On Frasier. Monday at 730 on Fox 58. You're watching Fox News at 10 with Ralph Bailey and Nicole Meyer. On the next home improvement, I was going to reorganize the closet. No. You're a pack rat, honey. Jill's old clothes are crapping Tim's style. You could fit Europe in these days. So Tim makes an apparel appeal. If you don't throw some of this stuff out, I'm going to organize this closet and get one with more power. What is his outrageous wardrobe enough to make Jill a believer? The drawer is a char. The drawer is a char. The drawer is a... On the next home improvement. Monday night at 7 on Fox 58. Taking a look at America, believe it or not, this cowboy is a little sore and drowsy, but he's alright. After being dragged around like a rag doll, Wade Graves was riding bareback in a bronco riding competition in Idaho last night. When he got stuck, he'd finished his eight second ride, but another horse hit his head. Then his head hit the ground. Graves, as you saw, was knocked out with his arms still caught on the rigging. Again, he's alright in fair condition with a concussion and a little blurry vision. Twenty-two people were arrested after only a 28 minute march by Aryan supremacists in the Sleepy Reserve community of Cure Delain, Idaho. The march cost the city $100,000 for police protection and other safety measures. Hundreds of protesters watched as about 90 white supremacists pounded the pavement while onlookers chanted anti-supremacist slogans. A vacant six story brick building and nine nearby businesses were badly damaged and some destroyed after fire swept through the West Bottoms district of Kansas City. The fire started in a building recently cited for fire code violations. About 80 firefighters battled the flames. Some veteran Kansas City fire officials called this the worst fire they'd seen in more than 25 years. Back here in California, a fast moving wildfire, black and nearly 1,000 acres, destroyed two mobile homes and four folks in a rural area near San Diego out of their homes. The fire erupted yesterday at about 35 miles east of San Diego. Firefighters expect to have the blaze contained by tonight. However, it could be Sunday morning before it is completely mopped up. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. A shocking day on the links for a group of golfers who found a man on the rocks below a cliff on a golf course in San Francisco. Rescue crews retrieved the man who apparently fell from a cliff off Lincoln Park Golf Course onto the beach. The man suffered a broken pelvis. His body was found on the 17th hole. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter airlifted the man to a local hospital. Well, it is the hottest we can yet and Dan Schafer is up next to tell us just how high our three digit temperature will rise. Plus, these monsters are too cute and friendly to be scary. We'll show you how they entertained some local children earlier today. All this and more when Fox News at 10 continues. Hi, I'm Amy Grant. You saw that package just a little while ago as to how many states are covered by the heat. And it's just miserable every place. We've got some storm activity down in Southern Arizona and even into Southeastern California as well. That's that monsoonal moisture that comes along every year about this time, mid-July through mid-August. We also have right here a tropical storm. We showed this to you last night. And last night the direction of Tropical Storm Celia was moving more of a northwesterly direction. Well, it's changed direction a little bit now, moving out to sea a little bit further. That's good news for two reasons. First and foremost, it's going to move out away from land. Secondly, it's moving out into cooler water and as it hits that cooler water it will lose energy. Right now maximum winds are about 55 miles per hour. And she's moving at about 15 miles per hour to the north northwest. So not posing any problems for hitting landfall with the brunt of the storm. Of course, you've got that outer edges of it causing some storms right along the coast of Southern Baja California. While up here, as we said, lots of heat building up. Now this monsoonal flow is starting to make its way into the eastern deserts of California. By tomorrow we've got a slight chance of our mountains of Kern County catching a little bit of storm action. Basically just scattered storm activity. 86, our current temperature, 66 the dew point, 51 percent relative humidity. Rising barometer with a northerly wind at 8 miles per hour. How hot was it today you ask? 106 degrees, he said. And that is above the normal by 7 degrees. 110 missed that record just a little bit. And 77, our overnight low, was 7 degrees above the normal. And of course we were way off the record low on that. However, we were real close to the record high low temperature at 79 is what that would have been. But we missed it. Tomorrow the air quality once again gunky, 138. Officially they call that unhealthful so do be advised of that. Watch out. If you have coronary respiratory problems try to stay in and stay cool. It is a spare the air day. Cut back on your usage of combustible fuel engines and try to cut down on the exhaust in the air. Some nasty storms up in the Dakotas tonight and into Minnesota. See that system? That just really gained intensity tonight. Bringing some tornadoes on the ground causing some problems for heavy storms up around Minneapolis as well. And out here in the desert southwest again some storms due to the monsoon condition. Down in Arizona. Looking for overnight low temperatures in the southern valley tonight to be in the upper 70s in many locations. Cool up in Delano with 70 degrees for the predicted low. But look at those highs once again up around 106, 107 in most locations. And for tomorrow in the mountains we're looking for a slight chance of a thunderstorm there. With the daytime highs really warm once again. 107 at Lake Isabella and out in the deserts. 115, 114 up at Ridgecrest in California City. 105 at Mojave and 106 in Lancaster. Here you go, five days, 106, 105, 105, 105, 104 for those daytime highs. Overnight lows in the mid 70s. Just hot, hazy, humid as it usually is in the late summer. We avoided it for most of the time, most of the summer. We've had a fairly cool summer so far. It's time I guess we get it. We're getting a dose now. Thanks Dan. If the British Open ended today, a Canadian-born, American-raised, Japanese tour player would be the winner. Did you get that? Brian Watts has the lead at the British Open. Gusts of wind ruled the course today. You were lucky to make par. No luck for Tiger Woods on hole number four. He misses the short par putt. Tiger a seven over today, now five back of the lead. Shot of the day perhaps. Payne Stewart at 14, the birdie. And he says, give me some love, and fans, it gives him a little love, I guess. Leader Brian Watts, approach on 13, plays the slope here of this hole very well. Watts is 73 today. He leads Jesper Parnevik, Jim Furek, and Mark O'Meara by just two strokes. I thought that you were still leading by two. Fantastic. I'm quite pleased with my play so far. It's been a great week. I've been fortunate the last two days with the tough weather to have a 69-93, and I feel fortunate to do that. We'll see if he hangs on tomorrow. Hiller, when Leeds the Ameritech open, he's at 16 under. Annika Soarstone leads the LPG, a big Apple Classic. She is 15 under and leads by six strokes. To baseball, the Dodgers were crushed by Mark McGuire's 41st and 42nd home runs last night. Today, a new day for the Dodgers, although they still face Big Mac in St. Louis. No home runs early to the sixth. Cardinals up 8-3, and one home run for Raul Mondesia. Two-run shot, Cardinals lead is three. Top of the eighth, 8-6, Cardinals. One on for Gary Sheffield, who bats his name on the ball, and the game is tied at eight. Two batters later, one on for Matt Luke, and the forces with Young Luke. A two-run home run, Dodgers 10, Cardinals 8. Jeff Brantley getting shelved. Bottom of the eighth, one on for Big Mac. The big swing and a miss, Jeff Shaw strikes him out, Dodgers 10, Cardinals 8. Tommy, good to get out of that one. Pitcher Al Leiter is back on the mound from New York. Four strikeouts for him in six innings today. That one against Scott Rowland. Bottom of the first no-score man on, Mike Piazza. A home run to right field, two-zero Mets. He'd add another one later on. Top of the fourth ball coming right at you. Off the pitcher's mound, Ray Ordonez makes it look easy. Easy double play. Top of the eighth now, and more defense for you. This is a beauty. Ray Ordonez in the hole, Robby Gref, Greg Jeffries of a single. Beautiful play. Mets beat the Phillies, 7-0. Let's take a look at the scores if we can. San Diego beats Cincinnati 2-1, Houston over San Francisco. Arizona and Milwaukee both winners. Florida 2-1 over Chicago and Pittsburgh 5-2 over Montreal. To the American League, Baltimore and Anaheim still going after each other. 7-3, Seattle beats Kansas City. Texas in ten innings over Tampa Bay, Minnesota handles Oakland. Boston and New York both win. The Bakersfield Blazers are going for two straight wins for the first time in 20 games tonight. And the fans were giving fans to fan of Bla's fire, perhaps. And also themselves. Top of the second, Bla's lead 2-1 after four infield singles in the first inning. Visalia strikes back, Adam Robinson a single to left the Oaks, San Duane Filchman. He is safe. 2-2, top of the third, still 2-2. Tom Russon is all the way over the center field fence. A huge two run shot, Oaks 8, Bla's 3 in the seventh. They can't get that second win. The high school summer basketball tournament finished up tonight. Coach Andrew Hill and the South Rebels face host Mark Hudson. And the BHS drillers in the championship. 41 all late in the game, John Kindred for BHS double pup and the deuce. 43-41, drillers. Rebels strike back. JR Washington on the break over Al Williams. And it was 43 all. Then the big play. Drillers by two, Al Williams is intentionally fouled. But he takes exception and earns his second technical and an ejection. That gives South an opportunity to win. 48 all, Tim Mielson makes one of two free throws. And South defeats BHS 49 to 48. They win that title. Tennis news, the USA will be playing in the Davis Cup semi-finals. Andre Agassi and Jim Courier won their singles matches yesterday against Belgium. Leaving the US one win short of the semis. Jim Courier filling in for injured Richie Renberg. Teams with Todd Martin, second set action. Courier nice return. Martin's volley splits the Belgians. Beautiful, one set apiece after two. Third set, nice little rally here. John Van Hurk and Xavier Melisse get the point for Belgium. They also get the set. There's the point. And take a look at this chest bump. That might hurt. Must be in shape. Fifth set rally for you. Martin the volley, not quite high enough. The return from the Belgians and Courier and Martin win in five sets. Finally tonight, budgeting gets a little easier for Robert Riker of Rivervale, New Jersey. Look at that, the 62-year-old wins $100,000. Serving it through that hole it goes. The target's just 30 inches by 18 inches. A nice shot and a happy man. I wish I had that same shot. Don't we all? I don't care about the shot, I just want the check. We just want the 100 grand. No, but that didn't look too tough. It looked too tough to you. He's probably been practicing for weeks. I'm sure he has. I am very bitter. Thanks Rick.
