You You You Hi, I'm Warren x9, you know, you've seen me on TV and you've heard me on the radio and today I'm going to teach you how you can teach your dog to behave using my method which is Hugs and kisses, you know You don't have to be tough with your dog to make your dog listen if you take the time and have fun with it Your dog will respond in an upbeat positive way You know I've trained over 35,000 dogs for people such as yourself and some celebrities to Lily Tomlin David Lederman Rodney Dangerfield and the one thing all these dogs have in common is they please their owners But they do it with a smile never ever get angry with your dog Take the time to make sure your dog's enjoying it and you're enjoying it and then everything will work out Just fine Not only are we going to teach you how to make your pet behave but we're going to teach you everything you need to know to Make your relationship and the relationship with your pet the best ever from first aid for your dog Through the proper way to groom your dog the proper way to stop your dog from doing those little things We all see dogs do on the floor. You're not going to want to miss a minute and we're going to show you everything You need to know to make sure that your relationship with your pet is good with hugs and Kisses, what do you think? As with anything else the proper equipment is essential when you're training your dog But like anything else there's good equipment and there's bad equipment. This is the type of collar that I recommend It's simply a rolled leather collar and it's rounded so it doesn't really match the dog's hair plus it doesn't put that much collar around his neck and doesn't hurt him and 99% of the time if you're training your dog, you can use a rolled leather collar but if you're starting with a puppy you might want to start with a little nylon collar because it's very very light and you can Start and gradually get larger and larger collars. But again, you don't need something heavy on a dog You just need something that's not only comfortable for you But comfortable for your pet at the same time. A lot of people call this a choke collar. I call it a training collar Yes, there is a right way in a wrong way to use it You don't know how many people sit there and try to stick this hole through that hole and this hole through that hole Obviously, it doesn't work. The proper way is to drop one end through the other and Then they put it around the dog's neck Well, this is wrong Can you see the way the chain is coming over the top of that ring? If I jerk this it stays tight No matter what I do. It stays tight Physiologically, if I pull this way Automatically my left hand fights me So the more you pull the more the dog pulls and nobody learns anything and from a psychological Standpoint when you jerk it, it doesn't release it stays tight. The dog says hey, when am I right? When am I wrong? There's no difference see the chain coming over that now if I reverse this Amazing, isn't it? I have the chain coming under the top I put it back on and this time when I jerk it voila it releases so I can go no What a good puppy. No, what a good puppy So if you're going to use this type of collar and in most cases It's not necessary use it the right way the best way to remember how to put it on the dog is just simply make a letter P is if you're writing it the dogs in front of you slip it over and it's always on right But again, it's not really necessary to use this type of collar Now here's a collar that I can say without doubt. I don't recommend at all this is called a prong collar or a spike collar and I think people should use this on themselves before they ever consider using it on their dog in some cases People actually sharpen this up. So if someone recommends this type of collar to you or someone even suggests the Possibility of using this type of collar walk away because as far as I'm concerned, they should be against the law Here's another collar on the market right out of Star Trek. This is an electronic shock collar the way it works You put it on the dog You press a button and the dog gets a shock and he's supposed to learn that way Hey guys, you get a lot more with a hug and a kiss. So if someone says to you that you need a dog With an electronic shock collar, and it's the only thing in the world that's gonna get your dog to respond I don't want my dog to behave that well where I need to use something like this Now what type of leash do you need for your dog? There are several leashes on the market I've walked into homes where they had a puppy this big and they went out and bought a leash this big This is heavy. Can you imagine something like like this on your neck all the time? You don't need a heavy leather leash. If you're training your dog, you can use a light leash What about a leash like this? I've seen people walk down the street with this size leash saying hey Warren Look how good my dog heels heels. Where can he go? He's only got a foot Don't use a short leash when you're working with your dog. Then these are relatively new Goes long and goes short goes long and goes short It may be nice for strolling the park from a training point of view. I really don't recommend this type of leash What do I recommend? a good old-fashioned 6-foot light cotton web training leash It's not heavy on the dog the dog can learn from it doesn't scratch your hand when it goes through Gives you a good grip. So you decided to train your dog 99% of the time this and this is all you need Think it out carefully buy the right equipment and training will be as much fun and as easy as possible for both you and your pet You Know contrary to popular belief, it's really important to start training your dog as young as possible I constantly get calls from all over the country Warren When's my dog gonna outgrow this problem or that problem? Well, the bottom line is if the dog's five and a half years old He should have outgrown it five and a half years ago. If you start teaching them young the same intelligence It takes to learn something wrong can be used to teach them something right and you can start with them at a young age for example Psychologically puppies go through four stages of growth just like people do Neonatal imprint juvenile and adult takes most of us 21 years But by the time a puppy is 12 months old, he's psychologically mature So start out on a sit-stay command you can teach the dog to sit by tucking under and saying sit Give him a kiss. Oh, what a good puppy pick him up again. Say sit Give him a kiss and now you're making it fun. So he doesn't even know he's learning It's kind of like puppy kindergarten or puppy prep school. Have a good time with it You want to teach the dog to walk on a leash and collar? Well, then buy a collar and buy a leash and for five minutes a day put the collar on the dog But don't clip the leash on let him just walk around for five minutes at a time with the collar then after two days you can clip the leash onto the collar and let him walk around for five minutes with the leash and Collar on together and he'll get used to it What about noises though a lot of puppies and a lot of dogs are petrified of noises How many people out there have dogs that afraid of thunder and lightning or someone knocking at the door? Sometimes you can get a puppy adjusted to noises Just by tapping on a pot and pan and saying hey, that's no big deal. That's no big deal You can deal with that right? Yeah Okay. So now you've got your puppy adjusted to noise and you want to call your puppy and you get down puppy coming the most excited And this way he thinks he just did something right where in reality he was coming anyway So remember if you start young with your dog and you have a good time with it dog, and you have a good time with it, he'll go up to be just fine. And more important than anything else, it's a big world out there for puppies, and many people pick their puppies up no good. And remember, if you were a puppy, the world looks real big to you. So the idea is to spend a lot of time down on your hands and knees with all the puppies, and if you spend time down on your hands and knees with the puppies, they're not afraid of you, they become well socialized, and you know what? They grow up to be the best dogs in the world. So start young, give them a hug and a kiss, they'll be your best friend forever, isn't that right? You know, one of the first things that most people want to teach their dog, and probably the most common, is how to sit. But most people make a mistake, because what they do when trying to teach their dog to sit, is they push down on the poor puppy's rear end, and we don't want to do that. So here's what you have to do. You start out by giving the dog a kiss, that's number one. Rather than push down, you take your hand, and you tuck it under, and say the word sit, but say it differently than anything else the dog's gonna hear. Sit. And the dog does it, you say, what a good boy, yeah, what a good dog, okay. And then you do it again, you say, sit. What a good puppy, okay, okay. That's a good dog. Sit. Good puppy. The thing to remember is that you have to make it fun for the dog. Just a couple of minutes every day is all the dog really needs, and also don't use the dog's name. Don't say, Hildy sit, because by the time Hildy hears sit, she's gonna be so excited from hearing her name. So if there's no motion involved with the command, it's just a sit command, or just a stay command, just use the word sit or stay, but make it sound different. Once the dog knows how to sit, you practice for a couple of days, then you can start getting the dog to sit while you're walking. You ready? Let's go. Sit. What a good puppy, okay. Sit. What a good puppy. Practice that every day, and the dog will sit perfectly for you all the time. So the dog's sitting, what's next? How about teaching the dog to stay? Stay is by far the most important command for any dog to learn. Why? It calms the dog down. If he's real excited and that tail's going back and forth, and grandma's coming to visit, you want to be able to make your dog calm down. Not by yelling, not by putting him in the garage, but by simply telling the dog to stay. Now when you're doing the stay command, spell the word out in your mind as you say it. S-T-A-Y. Take your hand and put it in front of the dog's face with the fingers down. Now the reason we do it this way is because we don't want the dog to confuse it with other commands he may learn later on. So here's how it's done. Start out sitting next to the dog. Stay. Step away with the right foot. Now you have a triangle, but the dog can still see the hand, and if the dog goes to move, all you need is a little jerk. So again, stay. Step away with the right foot. Good girl. Stay. Gradually walk in front of the dog, then walk back, and then stay as the dog gets better. We can start to circle, and we can get wider. Stay. What a good dog. Stay. But remember, every couple of turns, stay. That's a good dog. Stay. Stay. Good puppy. Stay. Now once the dog has this down pat, you can send anything in front of the dog. A ball, for example. Stay. He'll look, but he won't go. Stay. What a good dog. The importance of the stay command, I can't emphasize it enough. It calms the dog down. So now the dog knows how to sit. Now the dog knows how to stay. Well, let's put that sit and stay into practical use. Grandma is coming over. It's Friday afternoon. You got to pay the newspaper boy. Let's go to the front door and show you how to make sure the dog sits and stays when it's really important. Let's go, healthy. Stay. Stay. It's critical to teach the dog to stay by the front door. After all, the door is constantly being open and closed, and when the dog runs out, there's cars on the streets and many other dangers involved. It's also important for the dog to learn how to sit and stay so that people can come in without getting jumped on. And rather than no, no, no, no, no, by teaching a dog a simple command like sit, stay, what you're doing is letting the dog know that it's his responsibility to behave by the front door. Practice all the time and you too can open and close your front door without any problems. Tired of taking your dog out for a walk and having him walk you? Let's spend a few minutes and learn the proper way to teach your dog how to heal. First thing you need is a six-foot leash. You take the loop and you drop it over your thumb. Mistake everyone else makes is they buy six-foot a leash, they put it on their hand, and they wrap it around like this. Might as well buy two feet, guys. So you just take the loop over your hand, drop the rest in your right hand, and grab it. Start on your left foot and tell the dog to heal. But what if the dog gets in front of you? No, you don't pull the dog back because it becomes a tug of war and nobody learns anything. You start on that left foot. When the dog gets in front of you, give him a little jerk. Not hard, a little jerk. Turn the opposite way and just repeat the word heal. But just a few minutes ago I told you not to use the dog's name. Well this is the heal command. This is exciting. This is emotional. Use the dog's name. Get the dog excited. This is my friend Simba. The first thing you do before you start any command is give the dog a kiss. Look him right in the eyes and say Simba heal. The dog's in front a little jerk. Simba heal. That's a good dog. Simba heal. And once the dog is working with you, Simba heal. You can make left turns. That means you can go around the block both ways and you can make right turns. Simba heal. What a good dog. Now sit. Good puppy. What's the mistake that everyone else out there makes? They take the dog for a walk and they always make the dog walk right at their left side. First of all, it's boring for the dog and second of all guys, I don't want the dog peeing next to my foot. How about you? So if you're just going for a walk after the 11 o'clock news, I don't care if the dog's a little in front of you. I don't care if the dog's a little behind you or even on the right side as long as he's not pulling. So take that dog for that nice walk. Come on Simba. That's a good puppy and if the dog starts to pull, just a little jerk. So now the 11 o'clock news is over. The dog's not pulling you down the block anymore. You can go for that long walk. Say good night to that newscaster. You ready Simba? Let's go for a walk. Simba heal. Here's a command that every owner should teach their dog. It's called the come command. Not only from a convenience standpoint, but if for some reason the dog should get out of the house and you want him back to you, he has to know what comes all about. The problem is most of the time when you call your dog, the dog looks at you and says later. So you want to make sure the dog realizes when he comes it's good and it's positive. And the reason that most dogs don't come back when their owners call them is because their owners yell at them when they get there. An example. Get over here. What did you do? Let's face it guys, if you called me and said Warren come and when I got there he yelled at me, I had any brains at all. It's gonna take me a lot longer to get back next time. I know yeah yeah. So here's how you start teaching a dog to come. The first thing you do is put the dog in a sit command. So you tell the dog sit, you tell the dog to stay, and then with the most excited voice you have. Sabo come that's a good dog. Now you have an option at this point. You can either make the dog sit or just let him come there and think that the dog just won the lottery. Yes what a good boy. You're so good. I know it's tough. It's tough. Now another thing that's really important to remember about the come command is that you don't always want to teach it when the dog is in a sitting position. You want to teach the dog to come when there's motion because let's face it, how often do you call your dog when he's sitting? Usually you call him when he's chasing the cat, chasing the baby, or doing something other in the house. So here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna teach the dog to come for motion. So you start walking with your dog. Sabo heel. Come on. And back and forth. And then out of the clear blue. Sabo come what a good puppy. Yeah that's a good dog. Yeah yeah. Your face is gonna get wet on this command but it's worth every minute of it. Again just start walking with the dog. Let's go Sabo. And out of the clear blue nonchalantly. Sabo come that's a good puppy. Yeah. Sit if you want but it's up to you. The important thing to remember is when the dog comes to you it's got to be an enthusiastic command. It's got to have fun. It's got to have punch. It's got to be there. It can't be calm. Let me show you what you can do. Okay you got the dog coming from six feet away. Next you take a long leash. You clip it on the dog. You clip the little one off. And now you're ready to do it the way we do it. You start out by letting the dog go anywhere he wants. Okay Sabo let him just circle anywhere he wants to go. Come on. That's it. Sabo come that's a good dog. What a good boy. Okay Sabo get lost. Take a hike. I don't want to play. Bye. Goodbye. Goodbye. Sabo come that's a good dog. Remember when the dog gets there make it fun. Make it exciting. And I promise that you won't be saying to your dog please come anymore. Practice 15 minutes every day and in just a couple of weeks your dog will be coming every time you call him and it won't be any more of this outside. Please come back. Please come back. But remember the most important thing is that when the dog gets there he thinks that he's just done the best thing in the whole world. And you did Sabo didn't you? If there's one problem that's established between pets and their owners it's housebreaking. The dog that pees on the floor and the dog that does well you know what on the floor is probably the biggest single reason why pets and owners don't get along. But do you know that you can housebreak almost any dog in 12 to 14 days? A little time a little patience and a lot of love is all it takes. But the first thing we have to do is get people over the embarrassment of what they call their dog's accidents. I have adults and I mean lawyers, doctors, policemen, firemen that call me up and says, Lauren my dog does doo-doo kaka poo-poo. My little poodle Rainy rained on the kitchen floor. They've called it Tootsie Rose, little cigars, packages, and one of my favorite the dog left me a present. Now there's an easy person to please but really there are only five basic steps involved in housebreaking and if you follow all five steps carefully you'll find that in a short period of time you can walk anywhere in your house barefoot without the fear of you know what. First of all the most important thing is to make sure your dog is on a good healthy diet. You want to regulate the water and you want to regulate the food. That doesn't mean less that just means given its specific intervals throughout the day. So make up a schedule that you're comfortable with. If it's a younger dog he might require three feedings a day as they get older two feedings a day and even as an adult I still recommend two feedings per day and once you've determined the right amount of water and the right amount of food we have to make sure that we deodorize the area. Here's the biggest mistake people make the dog pee-pees on the floor they run and they get some ammonia to clean the floor up with. Well let's face it if you've ever changed a baby's diaper you know what the pee-pee smells like it smells like ammonia so in reality by cleaning up with ammonia what we're doing is putting the same odor down on the floor the little dog runs over and says oh there must have been another puppy in the house and he pees there again so no ammonia. The other thing we hear all the time is vinegar. Well people it's great for salads but lousy for training dogs. What you want to do is you want to pick up a good odor neutralizer. Remember a dog's sense of smell or olfactory is about 28 to 30 times better than ours so you can't deodorize the odor because if you deodorize it then what happens is the dog picks up all the little odors. You have to neutralize it so pick up a good odor neutralizer available at your pet shop. Now let's say the dog has an accident okay we made a mistake we turned our back and the dog has an accident. We're gonna use this for the dog's accident okay. What most people do the dog goes to the bathroom over here they take the little puppy over and they stick his nose in it they say bad dog Fooey what did you do wait till daddy comes home all you're doing at that point is telling the dog it's bad to go in that spot so he says okay pop no problem tomorrow I'll go here or here or here or here. What we have to get across to the dog is that luck. It doesn't make any difference where you go but anytime you go inside that's Fooey. So the best way to do that is if the dog should have an accident take the dog to a different area from where the accident occurred pick up his mess and confine them with it for just a few minutes. Another thing that you can do if the dog does have an occasional accident is start taking some of his favorite food and put his food where he went to the bathroom and once he sees his food there you know why he's not gonna want to go potty there anymore. The most important thing to remember about a puppy is when they first wake up they gotta go potty and after they exercise they gotta go potty and if you give them the opportunity to go outside you'll find that the inside of your house will be really really clean. Now here's something relatively new on the market that's been recommended to a lot of people it's called Cray training. Some people advocate it some people don't. I generally don't like to use a crate the reason I don't like to use it is most people use it the wrong way. Anytime the dog is bad guess what the dog goes in the cage and many dogs spend eight hours a day in the cage and then eight hours at night in the cage that's 16 hours a day. If you really want to use a crate make sure you know how to use it properly but in 99% of the cases crates are not necessary. Also if your dog is having a few accidents in the house and you're putting the food there you put some of his toys there and he realized it's a place where he can have a good time he's not gonna want to dirty there. Now remember dogs are very very clean animals. The thing that's so important for you to know is if you keep your dog clean you clean up the accidents with an odor neutralizer get your dog on a regular diet and you exercise the dog and take him out on a regular basis he'll be clean you'll be happy and you'll both be over this little hurdle of housebreaking in 12 to 14 days and you can spend the rest of your life. You know what? Well does your house look like a disaster area because your dog or your puppy decided he wanted to chew everything in sight? You know chewing is a big problem that owners confront but it really doesn't have to be. There are only four basic reasons why dogs chew. Either they're puppies like my friend over here and they're teething and their mouth hurts or they're totally bored with what's going on in your home or maybe they're not getting enough exercise and in the rare case it could be nutritional problems. So check with your veterinarian if your dog is on a good healthy diet gets vitamins on a regular basis then you can rest assured he's either a puppy and teething he's either bored as heck or he's not getting enough exercise and people make mistakes you can't teach a dog not to chew but what you can do is you can teach the dog it's good to chew on this and it's not so good to chew on that. Alright how many people out there watching this video have given their dog an old shoe to play with? Now I want you to stand up I'm watching you how many people out there said okay this is for you but leave my Gucci shoes alone? Well the dog doesn't know the difference between Gucci shoes and old sneakers so don't give your dog any shoes to play with or sweat socks. God if they sold these at the supermarket they'd be out of them all the time. People give their dogs old socks to play with make sure you don't give your dog an old sock or toys that resemble old socks. When you go out to buy your dog a toy what kind of toy do you buy for your dog? What's good and what's bad? Well this is vinyl it's hard rubber and you would normally think that this is good to give your dog but because it's so hard the dog's teeth go through it they rip it apart and they swallow it so I don't recommend vinyl what I recommend is good latex it's softer the dogs love to play with it and the most important thing about it is because it's soft they're not going to chew it apart but a caution take out the squeakers please because the dogs can chew them they do swallow them and we don't want our dogs to get hurt. Raw hide bones are excellent for dogs to chew on so you think you're a sport you go out you buy your dog one bone big deal after a day or two it's the same old bone mom it's the same old bone pop what you do is buy yourself a dozen toys all at the same time what you can do is take a dozen toys and put them all down on the floor and this way after you leave six dogs down or six toys down for two or three days what you do is you pick them up you put them away you put six brand new ones down you leave those down for two days then you put the new ones and you rotate them back and forth every couple of days it's like taking a toy away from a baby and giving it back a day or two later it's like a brand new toy all over again so make sure to rotate those bones on a regular basis and make sure you use natural rawhide bones not bleached not glued together natural rawhide bones okay now you have a piece of rawhide you have a puppy you want the puppy to chew on the rawhide he doesn't like the flavor what do you do well dip it in some bouillon just a little chicken soup put it in the freezer and give it to the dog to play with you might say why a frozen bone well just like you would give a frozen teething ring to a baby a frozen rawhide bone will take the pain away from the puppy chewing so if you have a puppy and he's teething give him some frozen rawhide to chew on okay you've all heard about these you've all seen them I'm gonna tell you what not to do as far as I'm concerned the next item is ludicrous ridiculous I can't believe some people use it your dogs chewing rub tabasco sauce on it you know how mean that is a dog's mouth is very sensitive no tabasco sauce it hurts jalapeno peppers it's amazing what people do to their dogs hot Chinese mustard you know when I eat Chinese mustard what it does to my face can you imagine what it'll do to your puppy please don't use this to stop your dog from chewing there are products on the market that you can buy that will stop your dog from chewing some of them are good some of them aren't you're gonna have to play with them a little bit to find out what the best product is some of them smell so horrible that people stay away and the dog seems to love them so check it out carefully also if you have one of those dogs that really doesn't like his rawhide bones here's a little trick that I learned what you can do is take some cheese rub it on the insides all around the bone and then put it down for the dog and he'll learn to play with it so you have a dog and you want to make sure he's not chewing number one you're gonna increase the exercise number two you're gonna make sure the dogs not bored there's a couple of ways to do that you change the bones every couple of days yes you leave a radio on a talk station for your dog you might say okay Warren what is my dog gonna listen to is he gonna listen to talk is he gonna come home and talk to me about politics maybe he is but the radio helps alleviate the boredom it gives the dog something to listen to and keeps the sound in the house constant here's something I want to point out only because I find it really horrible I've heard rumors and stories about professional trainers and people using mousetraps to stop their dogs from jumping up on things and chewing if anyone ever recommends that you use a mousetrap for your dog take their finger put it in here and let it close mousetraps should not be used okay so you got your dog ready he's not chewing but occasionally when you sit down for dinner you notice he's grabbing something in the corner you can take an empty soda can you can put 20 pennies in the can and when the dog goes to chew on something you can shake it just once don't even have to let the dog see it you can go no and that'll grab the dog's attention and then you replace that with one of his own toys or one of his own biscuits now let's say you have the type of dog that jumps up on the counter and grabs things put some paper towel on the counter put the can on the edge the dog jumps up the can falls down it's like God corrected him you don't even have to be there and the dog will learn not to chill all right we've covered chewing pretty thoroughly there are some more things I just want to briefly touch with you number one if you have a puppy and he's teething alleviate the pain by giving him frozen bones to chew on if your dog is bored leave a radio on plenty of exercise hide things around the house all the time for the dog to find and make sure there's a constant a change of toys for your dog if he's not getting enough exercise will increase that exercise because tired dogs sleep they don't chew your house apart and if the dog has a deficiency nutritionally check with your vet and compensate for that we have the exercise segment you're going to be seeing and we have the latchkey pet segment that you're going to be seeing and we'll go into some of the things that you can do to make sure your dog is getting the right exercise at the right time and we'll also make sure that you know what to do when your dog has to stay by himself chewing no big deal you can have a dog and have a house that looks in good shape just like this just by taking a few minutes to think it out first and remember when your dog's been good and you come home from work or from shopping give that puppy a kiss for me if you love your dog as much as I love my dog you're gonna want to make sure that you understand first aid because first aid can save your pet's life remember first aid is only the immediate care until you can get to a veterinarian but there are times you may run across a situation where you have to take immediate action first of all all dog owners should have a first aid kit especially for their dog it may look like a human first aid kit it should contain Pepto-Bismol kaopectate for you know what and an insect stick if case you're out in the woods or out in the field and your dog gets stung by a bee or bitten by an ant this will take care of it now there are times you're gonna run across your dog and he may be bleeding he may have tripped he may have stepped on a piece of glass it's critical to stop bleeding as soon as it starts the best way to stop bleeding is to take a bandage put it directly over where the dog is cut and press down with direct pressure and this will stop the bleeding in extreme cases and only extreme cases a restricting bandage or a tourniquet may be necessary tie it above the cut and then what you can do is take a pen and turn it to stop the bleeding make sure you release it every couple of minutes and remember the only time I want you to use a restricting bandage or a tourniquet is when it's a life-and-death situation okay so first aid kit for your pet you come home you find that your dog is choking to death what do you do would you know what to do you may save your dog's life let me show you what to do we know the Heimlich maneuver works for people but the hug of life also works for your pet let me show you come on so you come home your dog's having trouble breathing he's choking to death the first thing you do is open his mouth by placing your fingers on top of the mouth and check inside my what big teeth you have and check inside to make sure the dog's mouth is clear but if he's still choking you can straddle over the dog find the last rib and when you find the last rib you put your fist underneath if you have someone to help you have them open the dog's mouth and lift up and forward and up and forward and any foreign objects will come out of the dog's mouth and it may be the one thing you learn that can save your pet's life now what do you do if your dog's out in the heat and he starts passing out from heat stroke or heat prostration the most important thing to do is get that temperature down right away ice cold water and then get the dog to a veterinarian and never under any circumstances exercise your dog either just before food or just after food because they can get blowed some precautions can make the entire difference as to whether your dog lives a happy and healthy life or not so set up a first aid kit practice the Heimlich maneuver with your pet for that time you may need it make sure you have kale pectate Pepto-Bismol and insect stick bandages and all the first aid supplies on hand because by knowing a little first aid you're gonna be better off for it and you know what your dog's gonna love you for it too isn't there right now you know what a guy exercising with your pet it's really important perhaps the biggest single cause of behavioral problems is lack of pet aerobics get your dog into an aerobics exercise class it'll make you feel better in your pet at the same time but just like with people before you start an exercise program check with your veterinarian have your dog go through a stress test for make sure he's healthy let the vet tell you how to monitor your dog on a regular basis jogging with your dog can be fun but you have to be careful you start out a little bit at a time and build up to it gradually till it's fun for you and fun for your dog no one starts out as a marathon runner Dewey there are other things you can do with your pet to exercise you might be looking at yourself okay what's this man gonna do you're absolutely right doggies sit ups and puppy push-ups if your dog knows how to sit all you have to do is go sit take a step sit and up and sit and up and work at five or ten minutes a day and those little rear ends oh look absolutely fine you got to build up those muscles and get that dog in good shape what about push-ups you want to look the front has to look as good as the back well push-ups are a little bit more difficult but they do work and if you practice every day your dog will be fine start out with the dog sitting sit and then you can tell you to stay down and up down and up and down and up you saw it right here puppy push-ups practice every day your dog will be happier you'll be happier and find other things to do with your pet for example you can get a long leash put it on your dog take them to a schoolyard take them to the beach let them run around this way you don't have to worry about the dog running in traffic you want to play frisbee with your dog that's fine but be careful sometimes when they come down after catching a frisbee it's a little hard throw it on the ground let them retrieve it back to you whatever you find fun for you and your pet practice on a regular basis don't overdo it you'll be better for it and so will your dog and remember after every exercise session what are you gonna do gonna get right down gonna put those lips together and give them a kiss yeah what do you think about these three common problems that a lot of people run across with their dogs are latchkey pets you know it's the 80s more and more people are working the two-income family so dogs do spend a lot of times home by themselves and it's important that we compensate for that is your dog going through a midlife crisis you know they all start out as cute little puppies with everyone coming over and owing and owing over them and then all of a sudden they're two three years old the walks get shorter the toys get lessened what about depression can pets become depressed they sure can if you don't spend enough time with your dog or quality time your dog can easily become depressed but there are things you can do and many of the things go from one to the other in other words whether your dog's depressed whether it's a latchkey pet whether your dog's going through a midlife crisis there are things you can do one of the things I recommend is plenty of toys the more toys you put down the less after dog is to be depressed bored or even care whether you're home or not exercise well it's important to exercise the dog on a regular basis and if your dog is home by himself think about adding another pet it may be the answer a second pet whether it be a dog or a cat does it make that much difference mental stimulation you know the dogs home by himself all day or you just walk them after the news or after lunch for five minutes take them for a long walk take them to a beach take them to a park get him out of that regular everyday environment take them on an outing make him feel good about himself leave a radio on a talk station you know when I leave my house I have an answering machine I turn it on and I call my dog from the road and I say hi how you doing this is pop I'll be home in a little while I promise we'll play ball so don't be afraid to do things that may sound crazy as long as it's making your dog feel better new wardrobe well what happens when people go through a midlife crisis they'll go out buy themselves a new suit of clothes have their hair done well you don't have to dye your dog's hair but consider getting your dog a new coat a new leash a new collar it may make them feel better about himself and what about having a party for your dog now I know you're sitting there with a cup of coffee saying to hear that right a party for my dog absolutely sometimes dogs need other dogs to play with just like people need other people occasionally so have a party let's party guys come on here we go and you'll find that your dog will be happy you'll be happy yes it's party a little bridge mix for Fido the dogs will have a good time they get to play with each other and after all even we bore our dogs sometimes by giving them the opportunity to interact with each other they'll be happier for it so go for it have a party for all your dogs we all feel better when we're well groomed and that includes our pets as well one of the most common questions I get asked is okay Warren how often should I bathe my dog well the answer is when your dog gets dirty and I don't mean that facetiously your dog walks into the room and the room clears because the dog smells it's time for a bath you go to pet him your hand doesn't come off because the dog is sticky then it's time for a bath start with the ears and the ears should be done on a regular basis a little cotton ball and a little mineral oil will take care of the job just make sure you clean those ears on a regular basis if you notice the dog either shaking his head or a bad smell coming from the ear have him checked by the veterinarian because there could be an infection there and don't go down too deep just the outside of the inside is fine now what about paws people never think of paws getting dirty well if you take a look at the bottom of a dog's foot you notice there's hair what you should do is clip that hair off from the bottom of the foot and the reason for that is all the grease and all the dirt gets there the dog licks it and saws can develop and in terms of the nails make sure when you do your dog's nails use a nail clipper and just cut each nail has a little vein that goes back further and further so clip the nails frequently but don't clip them too short and if they do bleed it looks worse than it is there are products on the market that you can use that will stop bleeding quick stop there's many many products but it does stop the bleeding and if you're real desperate a bar of soap over the nail and I promise the bleeding will stop now you want to brush your dog there's hair all over your house what's the right type of brush to use there are literally hundreds of brushes on the market if your dog is matted you might want to try a little rake like this to get the mats out but if you brush your dog on a regular basis as you should a good old-fashioned slicker brush is just fine separate the hair brush one way brush the other way get that undercoat make sure you get that excess hair out and then you can put a little pompadour on if you want and have a good time with it but brush the dog on a regular basis it's healthier for him and it's healthier for you now if you have the type of dog like this that sheds an awful lot to get rid of some of that excess hair take a damn chamois cloth and every evening just rub it over the dog yeah just like this and that'll get rid of a lot of the excess hair and prevent a lot of sneezing if there's any allergies in your household now what about fleas and ticks that's a big problem but let's face it you can't get rid of the fleas on the dog and not get rid of the fleas in the environment because otherwise the dog just gets them over again so there are many products on the market there are flea collars there are flea powders there are flea sprays if you're going to use more than one product check carefully that the products can be used with each other and here's a good idea for you if you're going to vacuum up your house and you've gotten rid of the fleas what I suggest doing is either throw the vacuum cleaner bag away or if you can't take an old flea collar cut it up and drop it into the vacuum cleaner bag so the fleas will die in the bag if in fact that's where they are the most important thing to remember is to get rid of the fleas from the dog as well as from the environment you can also take a towel and roll the dog in the towel if you're not sure whether your dog has fleas or not because if there's any fleas they'll show up as dirt in the white towels you want to do that on a regular basis now you want to bathe your dog before you put them in the bathtub a little mineral oil a little cotton ball stick them in each year so the water doesn't go down take a rubber mat put a rubber mat on the bottom of the bathtub so the dog doesn't slip use a dog shampoo there are many dog shampoos on the market get the right one for your dog rub it in and then rinse it off and probably one of the most important things to remember if you notice stains on your dog and they're really bothering you little lemon juice that's it a little lemon juice would take the stains right off okay it's in between baths what do you do little cornstarch if you take a little corn starch and you put it on the dog and then you brush it off you know what will happen I'll take the grease and the oil off so that's important to remember so in between baths clean your dog on a regular basis now we've got the whole body clean right the whole body's in good shape how are we gonna take care of them out doggy dentistry it's very important a lot of people don't think of taking care of their dog's teeth but over 50% of dogs by the time they're five years old have problem with their teeth if you have a dog take a toothbrush a doggy toothbrush or even a little child toothbrush open the dog's mouth little salt and water a little baking soda and water and you too can make sure your dog's teeth are clean give them biscuits on a regular basis to help whiten their teeth and for those dogs that don't want to be brushed you can take a little cloth and rub it up and down on their teeth and get all that dirt off on a regular basis if you're going to use toothpaste please use doggy toothpaste don't use human toothpaste because sometimes human toothpaste makes the dog's stomach upset here's what you got to do now you got to make sure your dog is groomed from top to bottom including that mouth so he's kissable because that's really important take the time to groom your dog regularly you'll be happier and so will your pet one thing we all have in common is we're all going to get older sooner or later this is my friend Sadie and Sadie's ten years old and when we get older we need some special care let's talk about some of that special care that you can provide for your older pet first of all let's face it our stomachs as we get older can't take all those tacos anymore the same thing with a dog as they get older what they need is a little more change in their diet speak to your veterinarian and perhaps your dog can't have as rich a diet as he had when he or she was younger there are special foods on the market for the older dog that are easy to digest and taste pretty good too don't you think so Sadie also vitamins you know we start out as puppies and we end up as puppies it's a good idea for the older dog to be on a vitamin on a regular basis simply because he may not be eating as much as he was eating when he was younger and it's also important to remember that you feed your dog more frequently smaller amounts or maybe three feedings a day maybe four feedings a day but smaller feedings to make his stomach feel a lot better what about grooming the older dog okay when they were younger they used to run in the yard and roll over but now they're getting a little bit slower a little older well grab that brush they don't groom themselves the way they did when they were younger and spend some time grooming them now when they get older they need hugs and kisses too so spend ten minutes a day kissing and grooming kissing and grooming and brush the dog on a regular basis now this is really important you see the nails on Sadie Sadie's nails are a little long and when the dog gets older remember that they fetal splay and with their arthritis it can hurt them a lot so it's really really important to remember to keep the older dogs nails clipped on a regular basis and what about that extra walk sure not just after the news not just to go outside and do pee-pee kaka doo-doo but take them for a stroll around the block it helps with their mind and it helps keep their body in shape as well and if it's cold outside guys don't be afraid to put a sweater on your dog don't be afraid to put a jacket on your dog okay it doesn't have to match yours and you don't have to buy it at the most expensive store in town but they get cold outside they get a chill so make sure you put a coat on the older dog and when it does come inside after the snow or the rain please dry it off it makes a big difference okay now you're gonna say Warren you're crazy massage your pet that's right massage your pet I like a massage so does your dog do it softly take your fingers and start at the back and work your way around the dog not only does it feel good for the dog but it really makes you relax too I'm about ready to fall asleep how about you say look at Sadie Sadie's really into this massage and talking about massage what better place to have a massage than on a bed you know those bones get a little brittle the dog gets a little bit older you can get your dog a bed when they get older they need that change what about keeping life exciting you know the problem with older dogs is they get bored the problem with older dogs it's the same old thing day after day well how about it guys take your dog to the beach take your dog to the park and have a picnic for your dog by having a picnic for your dog it makes it more exciting for your dog it's a new place it's upbeat the dogs getting loved the dogs having a grand old time now you see these toys you might think these are for puppies these aren't for puppies these are for all dogs especially the older dog new toys help to keep the pet mentally stimulated and let's face it you know you buy the dog a bone when he's five years old and he has the same bone when he's 10 you're boring your dog so change the toys on a regular basis I think that's really important and for those people that just have one older dog how about a new puppy you know you can't teach an old dog new tricks but sometimes all an old dog needs around the house is a new puppy to play with like my friend over here now okay at first I agree maybe they won't get along maybe they will but even if they have an adversary relationship the young puppy is gonna keep the older dog active and an active older dog lives longer and longer and longer so your pets giving you 10 15 years of his life he's had a grand old time he's been your best friend in the whole wide world well now that he's older spend the time to make the rest of his life or her life as happy as possible you'll be glad you did and you know what so will Sadie the most important thing to remember is to spend a lot of time telling your dog how good he or she is and in return your dog will tell you how good you are spend a lot of time working with your dog a little bit of patience a lot of hugs and a lot of kisses and that makes the whole difference in your relationship and if I leave you with one thought every day for five minutes make sure that you take the time to give that dog your best friend in the whole wide world a big hug and a big kiss from me you
